20 Best Waterproof Pants For Hiking (2023 Updated)

When I was in Killarney National Park, I was crossing the lake to get to an awesome lookout to take a photo when I fell through the ice. I was wearing a full Marmot Gortex set and It was not warm outside.

I managed to pull myself out and walk back to the park kiosk. My outer shell was frozen solid. When I took off my outer shall my body was steaming and I wasn’t even cold. It was absolutely amazing. I was wearing these pants.

My favourite pants I might add!.

I don’t know why it’s so difficult to find rain pants for backpacking, but for some reason, all the pants are slim legged and, not only are they uncomfortable when wearing hiking pants underneath, but it’s impossible to take them on/off with hiking boots on.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m caught out in a rainstorm, I don’t want to stop, take off my hiking boots (and possibly gaiters), put the rain pants on, then put my boots back on. I am looking for rain pants that are quick on and off and useful year round.

These are not those pants. If you want stylish, good quality pants for walks or runs or even hiking, I’m sure they’re great, but these are not backpacking rain pants. Plus they’re ridiculously short (and I already expect my pants to be too short).

Awesome pants! Very waterproof but also lightweight. The zips that unzip from the top or bottom make it really easy to put on overtop your boots or to unzip while you’re walking to prevent overheating.

The bottom of the pants has a small elastic to help keep them tighter to your boots. I’d prefer a different retention system so I could roll the bottoms a bit to improve fit, but that’s just stubby leg problems.

They still fit well enough as long as I’m wearing a decent pair of boots.

Love them! Breathe, fit, design, waterproofing- these are survival wilderness grade. Wouldn’t be caught without them!

I used these pants on the West Coast Trail, not for hiking but for keeping warm and dry around camp. The material is very soft, comfortable, and stretchy. Breathes pretty well. The legs are a little baggy but not terrible.

Velcro tabs on the waistband held well for light activity and didn’t annoy like other reviewers have reported. At one point I accidentally spilled a water bottle in my lap while transferring from a larger container.

Not a drop soaked through, it just beaded and ran off the second it touched the DWR fabric.

I do like these pants, I’m 5’10 & 140lbs and I got an xs-long. They fit beautifully, I’d recommend going with one size up if you want to layer the pants with anymore more than a pair of shorts or leggings, though.

I wanted a more flattering fit, and thats exactly what I got. I ordered the small as well to try, and they also fit wonderfully. The pants are super easy to take on and off and great for protection from the wind.

I didn’t do a rain hike, but I did sit in a puddle on accident and it immediately soaked through the pants and to my leggings. So I would not call them waterproof by any means and for that reason I would recommend perhaps finding something more waterproof (as these are more so water resistant, which is how they are advertised) for a better price.

Again, love the way they feel, fit, how easy they are to take on & off, how lightweight they are. But for the price, I’d like something a bit more waterproof/resistant. I don’t expect them to stay dry if I jump into a pool, but I would imagine they would give me a minute or two of protection from sitting on a puddle.

These are the second pair of these pants I have bought. the first ones were purchased in 2015 and were getting a bit old so I bought these ones. The material is a bit more flexible than the previous version and they are bit shorter (perfect for me as I am 5’6” and the Small is perfect).

I use them almost everyday while walking my dog. They are wind resistant so I just need to wear a pair of jogging pants under even in the winter and I don’t get cold. Overall a great pair of pants if you are looking to something that is wind / water resistant.

I bought these this past summer to throw on when the weather turns, but have recently been using them on winter hikes over my wool base layer to keep me dry and windproof. Yesterday I wore them in 15 degree weather and they did great! My legs were warm the whole hike, I was able to sit in the snow without getting a soggy butt, and didn’t feel the wind at the summit.

Bonus points for being super lightweight and packable. They take up no space in my small daypack. Also a fan of the half zips. Theyre easy to take on and off without removing my bulky Hoka boots, and nice to vent heat on warmer days.

I did go for the Short length after reading other reviews about them running long. Happy I did, the length is perfect! Medium is true to size as well. I usually wear size 6 in pants.

A perfectly simple pair of pants. While this ‘M’ sizing is “a little on the baggy side” it is only a slight negative (for Me) when I take into consideration that they I can wear them over my shorts/long pants.

I prefer no pockets on my pants so this was a good selling point for me because I would prefer the cost savings that comes from features that I don’t need. The adjustable velcro around the ankles is a great features but would be a greater benefit if they had more Velcro for further adjustability.

The noise made when walking indoors while wearing these pants might be a “turn-off” for some people but moments spent indoors wearing these fully waterproof pants should be few for most people. Personally I would take them off (wearing shorts/pants underneath of course) or tell people they are a “static power generation device” that powers my EV bicycle.

Solid product. Stitching is quite durable, fabric is tear resistant. Elastic waist band allows for flexibility for taking pants on/off and allows extra room for sitting and bending over. Only gripes (and they are minor ones) is that 1: there aren’t any pockets.

Not a huge deal since a jacket can resolve this. 2: no drawstring on waist to seal off any snow. 3: no elastic band or Velcro strap to tie off snow from boot. It’s just a straight cuff, much like a pair of jeans.

Then again, these aren’t in the upper price range with other products, so the price point is just about right for what you get. If you can find these on a site wide sale and don’t mind any of the “gripes”, then I definitely recommend.

I had high hopes for these pants. I wanted them for rainy days when traveling or hiking. I was disappointed because they were too long (I’m not built for petite rises but regular lengths are too long) and because I was hoping the rise would be at my natural waist.

It was too short in the rise, making the fit uncomfortable and unflattering. While the ankles have velcro to cinch closed, the result was a floppy amount of fabric at the ankle. The fabric is soft and smooth on the outside with the inside coated with some kind of waterproofing finish, but that seemed comfortable.

I wish EB and other outdoor suppliers would design these type of pants for women the way we are really built, with hips and mid-sections and with shorter inseam as an option. I had to return them and eat thr $7 return fee.

I LOVE these pants! I’ve had them a few years, still look new. I use them mostly for adventure travel and they have been around the world. This summer went to Ireland and Alaska, rained hard everyday and I stayed dry.

I bought the raincoat as well, still looks new also. They pack great and take up hardly any space in the suitcase. They also wash great in the machine. I usually wear a size 8, but bought a 10, so they are a little big, but have Velcro on the sides so can tighten them.

I wear them over hiking pants or jeans. You don’t know you have them on because of the stretch and light weight. I wish they made this style for men, and not the elastic band because my husband wants a pair.

I was looking everywhere for some good quality waterproof pants that are also appropriate to wear for my work. My work takes place outside and it’s always raining and windy and sometimes even hailing.

So I really needed pants to keep me dry and warm. When I these Eddie Bauer pants I was NOT disappointed whatsoever. There checked off everything I wanted. Love them so much and I’m so happy I decided to make this purchase! Go get them.

Lightweight, and comfortable. And the creases fall easily from the fabric. I have three pairs of these trousers and they’re perfect for casual wear… hiking, walking the dog, trogging around. Far more comfortable than jeans.

Great trousers with spf rating and zipped pockets. Just what you need for a country walk or ramble. Dry super fast after washing and fit as described.

These are lightweight very comfortable (but of a shell feel) good cut. Partially waterproof. Love them

I’ve used these pants on multiple rainy bike rides, wet hikes, and cold days working outside, and they’ve performed extremely well. I was expecting them to get wet right at the top of the front of my leg, at the bottom of my rain jacket, (this happened on multiple other brands’ rain pants), but these ones stayed dry! Even when sitting on a bike for 2hr+ rides in the rain, the tops of my legs stayed dry.

I even brought them along on a hike up Mt. St. Helens to keep my rear dry when glissading down, and although my butt was cold, it was still dry, and the material didn’t tear either. The best part of these is that they can be taken on/off without removing my boots, even with my full shank mountaineering boots.

I ordered a Tall Medium, but they ended up being too long, so I exchanged them for a Regular Medium and they’re perfect, (I have a 34″ inseam). If I had one recommendation, I would say make a pair of these that’s a tight athletic fit, and has a full side zipper on both sides.

I’d buy that in a heartbeat.

I ordered the medium and large pants and the waist size was perfect on the large sized one, but the bottom of both pants near the legs were extremely large. It felt like I was wearing a wing suit even though I used the provided Velcro tapes to fasten or to make it tighter, it felt the same.

I was advised to wear something underneath it but ended up being too sweaty while walking around. I just wish they had made it into just a regular styled pants that was water proof, it would have looked and felt so much better.

Quality was excellent and size was correct. I returned them because they were so baggy. I’m 6′ and 175#. They are typical of a medium size that will fit up to a pro football leg size, which I don’t have.

A little room to layer underneath is fine, but I could use these as a parachute. I’m looking for something more fit and not so baggy. Doesn’t look like EB makes anything for men like that, sadly.

I bought these pants specifically for fishing. I wanted some waterproof pants that didn’t make your legs sweaty while wearing them for so long. I made a mistake of going on the boat without waterproof gear.

Never again with these pants! I was dry the whole time, even with all the water and fish slime! No biggie though. Once I threw them in the washer, it was like brand new. I’m usually a medium, but I ordered a Large so I could layer up underneath since it’s starting to get colder.

exactly what I need. Small pack size, quickly pulled over jeans and shoes, also and especially thanks to the zips on the legs. Light and comfortable material. Makes a rough impression. Unfortunately only one trouser pocket on the right side, which is kind of annoying.

Why not a second bag?.

Awesome product. I went for a ride to Rameswaram from Chennai and took ECR route while returning. There was a sudden blast of heavy shower and I had to change under a tea shop roof. This product was very easy to wear it on top of my riding pants and riding boots as it has the zip that opens for easy access.

Good thought and very purposeful. Not even a single drop seeped inside and this does what it promises.

These pants are lightweight and fit over your clothes well. My only complaint is that the zipper doesn’t quite go high enough so you have to be careful when you pull them over your shoes. These ripped the very first time they were used.

Other than the rip, they kept pants underneath dry. Decathlon customer service was great and refunded them since they didn’t work out.

I read in one of the reviews that was posted online about these pants (Men’s Crest-a Hiking Pants with Insect Shield) that – at $99 – they were far too expensive. Nothing could be further from the truth, and such a claim I find to be ludricrous.

Sure, there are other, cheaper products out there, but these pants will be around for years; the others certainly won’t. They are of excellent quality and are made to last. I have always been delighted with LL Bean products and, indeed, still wear an anorak that I bought in 1995 to take with me to Iceland, where I met my wife on a hiking vacation.

She later bought her own anorak from you and, at this very moment as I write, both items are in the washing machine undergoing a 40C wash with powdered detergent – as per instructions. Keep up the good work! Thos.

Very thin and light weight. I ordered a 36, but they fit about 39, maybe 40. I kept them because I need the bug protection, and they work great. Overall quality is poor. They have 5 belt loops which is a poor design choice in my opinion.

Pants built for hikers and being outside need 7 loops. Carry anything in the pockets and you’ll understand. The legs fit over boots just fine. They dry quickly. Double stitched everywhere, except the belt loops.

Speaking of belt loops, did I mention that it needs more? Leg pockets aren’t flappy and has zippers that will take two hands to open. Legs are huge, but that may be indicative of the over-size waist I received.

I hope they hold up. I’ve had these for two years. Haven’t had ticks while wearing with bug socks and bug shirt. Overall nice, but not what I’m used to with bean.

Good fit and looks on this pant, and after decades of hiking in cheap, but ok gear I was looking foreward to try out some preimum product. Choice fell on Norrøna Falketind as it is marketed as a good allround pant for trekking among other.

Unfortuenately got a big tear after few days use with no apparent reason. Pant was used mostly sitting in packraft, but tear must have happened outside. Still, with a big tear like the one I got without an apparent situation where the pant broke, I believed I had a good case for warranty claim.

Returned two weeks after purchase but nope. Not covered by warranty, so had to pay another 10% for repair. As a salesman of premium products, I am really disappointed. Not recommended.

I needed a reliable waterproof pants which I can use while hiking, biking, but also stylish enough to be used in an urban environment. With its GoreTex 20. 000mm waterproofness, overall appereance and clever design this Falketind pants fulfills all my requirements.

I think it is nice enough to be used in an urban environment. It also excels with its outdoor features. The lower parts of this pant don’t prevent you to ride a bike (even though it was not particularly designed for biking).

It has enough pockets to hold a large mobile phone (cargo pocket only), vallet and keys (each for one side pocket). The only improvement over the existing model can be larger and deeper side pockets that allow user to put more things.

Overall, I am very happy to purchase this product.

Trousers that are light and can withstand a West-Scandinavian rainy season is an essential garment. Falketind gore-tex pants are made of light, strong and durable fabric, which is great. However, this product has two unforgivable flaws.

The first flaw is the size of pockets. The side pockets are much too small to comfortably contain things you need pockets for, such as keys, phone and wallet. It seems as the designers have tried to make a third very large pocket on the front thigh – not a comfortable place to keep your smaller objects when moving about.

The second flaw, and arguably the most annoying one, is the hooks on the inside of the legs. These hooks get stuck in your shoelaces, making it a nuisance when you want to take off your shoes. If you only intend to use this product in deep snow, this second flaw might not be a problem to you, but if you will use it for the wet season(s) or just a garment for life outdoors in general, this is going to annoy you.
