20 Best Water Pump For Aquarium (2023 Updated)

If you have aquatic/semi-acquatic turtles and/or fish- powerheads will save your sanity! I was more excited about the results in the turtle tank than the fish tank, because fish are not *quite* as needy as turtles, but it’s a God-send in both! My turtles are still juveniles- One is just about 2 inches, the other is about 1.

5″ and if you don’t know the stats on hatchlings, they have a 90% mortality rate, and the fact that only 10% (1 out of 10) survive is terrible. Their chance of survival in captivity is only better if their owners know ehat they’re doing-which is rarely the case-so capitvity rates aren’t any better.

Whether due to incorrect husbandry, media, diet or handling- it’s a job in itself. Bare bottoms are “easier” to clean, but turtles actually hate it, so we chose river rocks as substrate-gravel is NOT recommended, they’ll eat it.

Sand is okay as an alternative as long as you get the right kind, and rinse/place it correctly. But because gravel isn’t recommended, aquarium vacuums aren’t really effective. Turtles are MESSY, and I would spend hours using a Turkey baster to get all of the lettuce and their feces out from the rocks.

That tome was considerably less after attaching a powerhead to their habitats. It comes on usually twice a day, aerates and stirs up the bottom of the tank, so the filter actually catches more of it than it did without it.

Bonus: the turtles LOVE when it kicks on 😂 They’re smart, they know when it’s about to kick on just like they know when it’s time to eat, and they’ll swim over to it and float there until it comes on and pushes them out.

They’ll swim back over and ride the current again. 💙.

I purchased this powerhead for use with my UV sterilizer based upon previous reviews. It was a nice upgrade to my previous one which finally burned out. However, the instructions on it’s assembly and uses is far from optimal.

I am very mechanical-minded. As such, I did figure out what I need to put where. It runs very quiet and has just the right output for my UV sterilizer. I am using the AquaClear filter with it – and tho’ the filter is bulky, it’s a great addition to keep fine particles and baby snails out.

Overall would purchase again and recommend to anyone. (by the way – one of the levers [yellow] was broken – but I’m using it in reverse anyway).

I purchased 2 AquaClear Powerheads and one has already died almost exactly 3 months later. I purchased these to help keep the tank clean by also attaching filter Max 2 prefilter’s. The power heads inlet size doesn’t match anything my other powerheads used so I made an adapter to attach them but it isn’t perfect.

In short: 1) Pump will not last long in a tank even with a filter keeping out any debris. 2) Non standard inlet sizes means anything else you have that you want to use with it won’t fit. 3) Square water exit means trying to use powerhead to prime a siphon line for tank maintenance is hard, the old adage a round peg in a square hole.

I am not sure how the warranty is on this or if I can get it replaced after so little time but I will post my experience with customer service in the coming days.

I’ve used a number of these over the years and while they work, they are made of a relatively soft plastic that ends up wearing out around the impeller shaft pretty quickly, if you are pulling debris into the intake.

They are inexpensive, but after this one is done, I will likely look for another type of pump.

Pay attention to Model No. when ordering. I ended up with a Model 3 when replacing my old Model 2. They look exactly alike in the pictures. My new Model 3 performs a bit too well. I was, nevertheless, able to tame it with a screen at the outlet of my hose.

My old Model 2 had two settings. Not a feature on my new Model 3 unfortunately.

This is a terrific pump for my fountain. It was easy to install and veey strong for my little 3 tiered pond fountain (about 4 feet tall). It has a long cord and would work well on even bigger fountains/ ponds.

My old one lasted about 8 years of daily use. I put a sock over the intake valve to protect from debris, as there are tons of messy eucalyptus trees over my yard. I would recommend thus and the sealed housing is an improvement over the old one I had.

The pump is doing a fine job circulating water in my shop evaporative cooler (4500 CFM). The cooler is positioned behind me in my garage. My 3 HP wood lathe throws enough wood chips it is overwhelming.

With some “cut to fit” AC filter material in front of the water intake this looks to be a good alternative to the traditional water pump that these type coolers use. It is lower cost pump and moves plenty of water to keep the fiber boards more than adequately saturated with the fan at its highest speed.

With the old bottom water pickup wet chips caused the first pump to fail after a couple of years. Fountain pumps like this one are made to work in the presents of decaying leaves and debris that evaporator cooler pumps were not designed for.

I have a small cat water fountain and my large dog insists on drinking from it which in turn burned out the pump that came with the fountain from him drinking it dry. After installing this one I know I dont have to worry about it burning out when he drinks all the water.

It keeps running, louder but still running. I just add more water and its good to go! Im hoping he will like the large water fountain Ives ordered for him and will discontinue running the cats water dry! Lol! I did order two of the pumps so I would have a back up one.

Do not buy. Purchased this pump as an upgrade for my current pump. The size and volume were ideal for the Fluval I was replacing. The quality of the parts looked good and servicing this pump looked promising.

Unfortunately I only got 34 days out of it. The bushings that hold the pumps impeller in place have worn causing the blades to impact the housing. This causes a loud noise that is impossible to miss.

I had no sign of failure. In contact with EHEIM to see if there are any solutions.

I purchased this to replace my old workhorse Eheim Universal 3400. Nothing with with the 3400 other than it was getting a bit noisy and will remain with me as a spare. The location and spacing of the inlet/outlets along with the thread sizes, are identical between the Universal 3400 and the CompactOn 3000 so it makes for a perfect ‘drop in’ replacement.

The 3000 runs so much quieter! I now have an Ehiem CompactOn 3000 and 5000 running side by side and their are both extremely quiet together.

This little pump is one of the best pieces of aquarium kit I have bought for ages! Love it! I bought it to carry out water changes and to fill a tank after stripping down rather than carry buckets slurping water all over the carpet.

I bought a 10 meter length 1/2 inch pond flexible filter pipe attached one end to the pump, the other end in the sink, drop the pump into the tank and bingo it empties in no time and with absolutely no spills.

It saved my bacon recently when my tank split for no reason and started to slowly empty water onto the floor. Because of this little gem 3/4 of my tank water ended up in the sink, not on the floor. Great purchase with the quality and low noise you always get with Eheim products.

Bought as a replacement pump for an under gravel filter. This pump expels the water out through the top of the pump which in my case results in the water being pumped out of the tank and onto the floor.

I needed to buy a flexible hose in order to divert the water back into the tank which is annoying. Only had it for a week and so far seems quiet enough although the Ventura pipe is difficult to fine tune, its either fully on or off.

All the replacement pumps I have owned have discharged the water from the side and back into the tank. Hence only giving it 3 stars.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that a small Hidom fountain pump ran all last summer without missing a beat, and fired up instantly this summer. So I did not hesitate to buy a Hidom power head for my indoor aquarium’s under gravel filtration system.

The power head’s only been running for a few weeks but it seems to be just as effective as the larger capacity pump it replaced and I hope it will last just as long – about ten years! Only time will tell!.

The only problem with it is that it is made of cheep materials and therefore it is not expensive at all , but other than this it is very quiet and reliable. Also it is the only filter which has three output flow directions instead of the standart which have two.

Third flow is important because it gives more movement inside the water if using a biological filter which takes the second flow output only to itself and then in such case there is no movement inside the water.

Also the filter is also divided better in levels of speedof flow per hour. ( 1100/ 1300 /1600 etc. ) Also it is almost among the only few filters left which comes with a real third earth/ grounding cable which is really required as the best option and guarantee for safety against real shocking electricity.

It is way much better than all those cables with plastic dummy third cable which gives no safety in a case of electricity. So in conclusion it is a very good filter.

Really happy with this purchase after having it a few days. I previously had an Otto power head that was no match for this Aquael. The suction cups are quality, and designed to dampen the vibration. I also bought it due to having a ceramic shaft, as the previous one would wear the shafts out pretty quickly.

Glad I spent the extra money on a quality unit, and not a cheap one.

This Gadget is some fine work. so squeaky components or vibration noises when in operation. quiet easy to set up too. Gives enough flow/circulation in the Aquarium Without knocking your fish for a Sixer, or disturbing the inhabitants.

Highly recommend this power head! Great flow, easy to setup and simple setup!

The back panel was broken when the pump arrived, but I don’t think this is on BRS. There was insufficient packaging in the Eheim box and the pump is heavy as a brick. Since the panel doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the functioning of the pump, I just rolled with it.

This is a pump that does indeed pump. Can’t make any judgement on longevity, but it does seem very sturdy (minus the broken panel). I will say however that this thing vibrates *a lot*. I first tried placing it on a silicone trivet as suggested by another reviewer.

This helped somewhat, but it was still pretty loud. What seems to have worked a bit better was putting three dollops of silicone on the underside of the included mounting plate. Much less vibration transferred to the sump and cabinet with these relatively much more squishy pump feet.

This is one beast in the making, it holds the old classical eheim look and is made in Germany. While most of the other pumps under the eheim line are produced in China, this one still originates from the native Germany.

Already know people who have been using it for last ten years. The pump is so silent and easy to clean. Thanks IndieFur for making this beautiful product available in India.

This unit was labeled damaged, but only the box was affected. We have been using these Eheim pumps for years. They are quiet and reliable. An advantage of buying here is the useful advise from the technical support staff.

I thought it was brand new. Had an unopened bag of accessories. Very pleased and much cheaper than new. Only the box showed wear.

This is a strong powerful pump the first one I brought has lasted for over 25 years and is still running strong. I believe this one will also last as long.

It is small but moves plenty of water. Adjustment is easy with generously sized adjustment knob. From my experience you might want to turn the adjuster to a very low setting when you first plug it in (and yes it is pretty quiet), or you might have water squirting higher than you would expect.

Lots of range on flow adjustment and small fountain setting was quite low (never did try high but guess it cold be close to ceiling). Always skeptical with made in China products and this is good quality, well made and works great! Length of power chord is generous and was long enough for my application and it is aa good quality chord and plug.

This is a great little pump and price is very affordable making it a great value and I would recommend it to anyone needing a small pump.

I finally replaced my submersible water pump for my wall fountain after using the same one for many many years. This pump did fit the fountain and did pump the water through but it was very noisy. We finally just turned the fountain off because we could not hear the water we could only hear the pump motor.

This air pump gently moves water around the 20 gallon bottom dead corner of my aquarium without disturbing the fish. Will only push a Platy fish 2-3 inches if they happen to get right in front of it.

The Whisper power filter sold with the Tetra 20 gallon tank kit does not extend to the bottom of the tank and an extension for the Whisper 20 is not being produced. So this little pump solved the problem.

I’m not sure I got a defective or I started it up wrong. Where the shaft pegs into the outer shroud became loose so the propeller keeps hitting the it. Instead of returning it I put plumber’s tape on the end to both keep the propeller in and tighten the peg hole.

It works but gets off balance at times if I switch it off. The design makes that the week point for wear and tear since you will have to open it and clean the shroud. This is my first ever wave maker so I’ve only experienced using this fan.

On a different note, I got a little too much trace elements cycling this 2 week tank. So now I got to fight off the brown algae bloom. At least get it off the sand. Edit: So I’ve since learn the polarity can make the blades rotate the wrong way.

Unplug and plug in again to correct this and everything is smooth. This pump is still running strong for 2 years now!.

I don’t know how I figured 240 gph would be OK in my 20g long, but I did. I had to move it from where I had wanted it as it was so powerful it was sucking in all the bubbles from an air stone 8 inches away.

First day I had it on, my fish went nuts in a good way. My corys were scuttling and drifting along their sandbed, my danios were chasing each other through the current, and my littlest tetras took turns darting directly into the jet only to be blasted into the opposing tank wall.

I turn it on intermittently, and I can’t leave it unattended in good conscience for my tetras sake, but I have it positioned on the back wall next to the outflow of my filter and pointed up at the water surface, and it makes my tank water go in circles.

It doesn’t stay put at the edges of how far it can be adjusted, but I’ve had more issues getting the suction cup magnets to detach when I need to move/clean it. I want to buy a powerhead better suited to my tank size but this one is so quiet and Koralia doesn’t make anything smaller, so I’m happily resigned with blasting my tetras around now and again.

I bought 2 of these 3 years ago for my 150 gal FOWLR. They worked well for 2 1/2 years until they began having startup issues. I didn’t think anything of it except that they needed maintenance. It wasn’t until I installed a grounding rod that I found a problem.

My GFI kept tripping and I narrowed it down to a Hydor circulator. I unplugged it and removed it and I found 2 large cracks in the housing. These were obviously allowing water into the electrical pump and causing a current leak.

A few days later I removed the other Hydor and found cracks in the same place! I have suddenly lost 2 dwarf lion fish in the past 6 months who were very healthy the day before, and I can’t help but think that this may have been a contributing factor.

I now have some Tunze pumps, hopefully they will work out better.

I’ve been keeping a reef aquarium for twenty two years. I’ve purchased many pumps during this time. The EHEIM pumps run quietly for a long time without failure. They seem to resist salt and calcium accumulation better than other brands.

They are well made and come with various fitting so they can be submerged or otherwise. I’ve used them as wave-makers, they also stand up to the constant cycling on and off that has killed many other pumps.

I use one for my kalk stirrer. I’ve also used the EHEIM pumps as return pumps. These are great pumps and I highly recommend them.

Was recommended by a friend in the fish business. I have a giant 1000 gallon salt water aquarium in my den. This pump works but don’t ever leave it unattended or you’ll be sorry like I was. It was messy but no fish died.

I used it for in ground pool too. It works good, it is easy to use, it is a workhorse. I’d buy it again.

Purchased this pump as a spare just in case. My current pump is exactly the same model Ive had this pump for over 15 years. Only maintenance is cleaning the impeller about every 6 months. Highly recommended.

Reliability, quiet operation, flow rate, energy consumption are all reasons to buy this pump. I am replacing an Eheim 1060 that has provided continuous service for 25years. I would have replaced the impeller parts on the 1060 but for about $20 more I got the newer version that pumps more water & consumes about 10W more.

I cleaned the pre-filter with each water change (once a month), but only cleaned the impeller a few times in 25yrs. The impeller may have lasted longer if I had been better with cleaning the entire pump.

Impeller magnet had blistered and gotten noisy. what do you want after 25yrs. Expecting this pump to last the rest of my life. ! Great product !.

I just received this second hand with a tank and sump setup. It rattled when first plugged in after a quick cleaning. I cleaned it more thoroughly a second time and it is quiet and pump very well! Great pump.

I will look for these from now on.

I have an Eheim 1260 that started out its career in the sump of a freshwater tropical 50 gal tank for about 10 years, that was later turned into a 50 gal reef tank for three years and has now been in the sump of a 75 gal reef tank for about two.

After finally 15 years of continual use in fresh and salt water, with minimal maintenance (once every five?) my 1260 is finally slowing down just a bit. This pump has been so reliable, that I have just ordered a second one and will keep my old one as a back up.

You can’t go wrong with any of this series Eheim return pumps. They will last forever, with regular maitenance.

I upgraded my Cube 10 pump to the SICCE Syncra Nano after receiving my Cube 10. The Cube 10 pump was extremely loud all the time. It sounded like it was grinding rocks no matter how I positioned it and made sure there were no air bubbles or contact with the sides.

After contacting support they recommended this pump so I ordered the Syncra Nano and the problem was solved! It is super quiet, I can’t even hear the pump. It has a variable flow adjustment and is very powerful for such a little pump.

The pump that came with the Cube 10 was variable but even on the highest setting, it was not creating enough flow for my planted tank. The Syncra Nano adjustment is very easy with a dial knob and once adjusted the flow is excellent.

If you are buying a Cube 10, upgrade the pump immediately to this little workhorse. You won’t be disappointed. I would also recommend that Waterbox consider scrapping the SICCE pump that comes with the Cube 10 and instead include this pump and maybe up the cost of the Cube 10 slightly to offset the cost.

I bought a 50gallon all-in-one to start my reefing adventure. It’s been a slow start since I’m following BRS’s 5 minute guides as an outline. One thing I just wasn’t sure about was the racket coming from the return pumps that came with my tank.

I was working on cable routing and water lines and disconnected them one by one and noticed how freaking quiet the room was. I had grown accustomed to the noise! I decided to read up and see what people recommended for small pumps sized for my aquarium’s needs and pulled the trigger on these Sicce ones.

i wrongly assumed that this pump would replace the one that I have. However at a 1000 LPH which it does not develop as the out let is very small size not given on advert. It is not worth the money to send it back so the bin is the only option.

Great product and fantastic price. Came with extra bits and everything required to get to work straight away. Water in my tank is clear as glass.

Great for a small size aquarium. Powerful for its size, easy to hide. Perfect little water pump for the job.
