20 Best Water Filters For Backpacking (2023 Updated)
There are a variety of water filters for backpacking available on the market today. The type of filter you choose will depend on a number of factors, including the type of water you’ll be filtering, the volume of water you need to filter, and your personal preferences.
One of the most popular types of water filters for backpacking is the gravity filter. These filters use gravity to force water through a filter element, which can remove a variety of contaminants, including bacteria and viruses.
Gravity filters are typically very lightweight and easy to use, making them a good choice for backpackers.
Another popular type of water filter for backpacking is the pump filter. Pump filters use a manual or battery-powered pump to force water through a filter element. Pump filters can remove a variety of contaminants, including bacteria and viruses.
Pump filters are typically more expensive than gravity filters, but they can filter water more quickly.
If you’re looking for the lightest, easiest-to-use water filter for backpacking, you may want to consider a water purifier. Water purifiers use chemicals or ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and viruses.
Water purifiers are typically very lightweight and easy to use, but they may not be as effective at removing other contaminants, such as chemical pollutants.
No matter which type of water filter you choose, be sure to read the instructions carefully before using it. This will help you use the filter properly and ensure that you’re getting the best possible results.

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter for Hiking, Camping, Travel
Long-lasting membrane microfilter will last up to 1,000 gallons (4,000 L) of water, that’s enough drinking water for an individual for over 5 years
LifeStraw, the original ultralight backpacking and travel-friendly ‘straw’ water filter, makes contaminated water safe to drink and helps to prevent most waterborne diseases by removing bacteria (like E.
coli), parasites (like Giardia and Cryptosporidium) and microplastics. Drink directly from lakes, rivers and streams or fill a container to use your LifeStraw on the go.
Katadyn Vario Water Filter: 2000 Liters Glass Fiber, 400 Liters Carbon – The Vario combines individual efficiency with the simplest possible handling. The technology it uses consists of three filter levels: a high-performance glass fiber filter, a ceramic pre-filter that can be adjusted individually according to the cloudiness of the water, and active charcoal for eliminating odors.
Anyone who needs up to two liters of drinking water per minute can use the glass fiber and active charcoal filter. If the water is extremely cloudy, the ceramic pre-filter can be fitted in a moment in order to extend the service life of the glass fiber filter.
The Vario is compatible with most standard outdoor bottles and hydration bladders.
I love this water filter and the fact that it can be attached to my wide-mouth Nalgene bottle. I mainly use the lesser filter setting and it always works perfectly for most water I’ve come across. I’ve only had to use the heavier filter setting when I was stuck having to use some swampy-looking water.
After filtering, the water still had a bit of a light-brownish tinge, but was clear and to my surprise, actually tasted fine. Would highly recommend!.
Only reason in didn’t give it 5 stars was weight. I recently used it on a five day hunting trip on Mt Jefferson NV. Water at elevation was scarce and hit hard by the animals in the area. The water was clear but had a lot of sediment at the bottom of the spring with animal droppings everywhere.
The feral horses and cows really made a mess of it. I had to clean the ceramic filter after every other fill typically every 3 to 5 liters. I didn’t have that problem in the faster moving creeks at lower elevation.
Water was always great tasting and clear with no floaters. Great product, have total trust in the equipment and would recommend it to anybody that is as picky as me when it comes to how water tastes.
By equipping the award-winning TrailShot Microfilter with the ability to serve as a gravity filter, the MSR Trail Base Water Filter Kit offers maximum versatility for backcountry water treatment. The TrailShot Microfilter weighs just 5.
4 ounces, has a flow rate of 1 liter per minute, and effectively treats up to 1,500 liters of water. Perfect for backpacking, it is effective against bacteria, protozoa, and particulates. Its filter utilizes Hollow Fiber Technology to maximize flow rate while also effectively neutralizing all but the most microscopic threats (NOTE: it is not effective against viruses).
A simple squeeze action draws water from the nearest available water source through an integrated hose, and passes water through the filter, allowing you to drink safely immediately and directly from the integrated nozzle.
The field maintainable filter is incredibly easy to clean and requires no tools. Should you use the filter frequently enough to have treated 1,500 liters, the TrailShot Replacement Filter Cartridge (sold separately) is available to fully restore the filter’s effectiveness.
Once you’ve reached camp or if you need to filter water for multiple people or a number of days, you can convert to a gravity filter design. Fill the included roll-top ‘dirty water’ reservoir from the available water source, suspend it, and let gravity take over.
Water travels through the Hollow Fiber filter and into the ‘clean water’ reservoir without any hands-on effort. A wide-mouthed cap with a smaller screw-top cap allows easy access to the filtered water.
The collapsible reservoirs roll-up neatly when you’re ready to get back on the trail. The total weight of the entire MSR Trail Base Water Filter Kit is just over one pound.
Tested it at home on both hand pump and gravity methods, and had no problems. Took it to the field and got water from a small creek without a lot of sediment. I was surprised at how quickly the gravity method filtered 2L of water.
Just a couple of minutes. I’ve filtered about 10L of water total, so perhaps it will slow down over time or if using it with more silty water. Both methods are intuitive and easy to use after reading the instructions.
I’m super bummed that they got rid of the old system that didn’t include a clean bag and didn’t require the Trail Shot filter. Most people have existing containers that they favor, and this package requires the purchase of unnecessary and undesirable components.
It’s unfortunate, because the 2L dirty bladder with its roll top design is the best in the business. I recently lost mine, and I will simply have to go with another brand as this combination doesn’t work for me.

This is my favorite filter!! It really fits my style of camping/hiking/backpacking very well. When we get to a water source and the whole crew needs to fill up, this thing cranks out filtered water ready to drink! It’s got a great flow rate with the pump, no need to wait on a gravity fed filter and you can fill up everyone’s bottle just a lot more conveniently than smaller options out there in my opinion.
This is not really an ultralight filter but I don’t think weight is an issue at all. It does take up a bit more pack room than other filters, again, worth the space to me. Water is important and I think this filter is worth its weight and space to bring with you on the trail!.
Ideal travel companion to all travellers and outdoor lovers, the LifeStraw Peak Series Personal Straw water filter system allows you to filter and purify water in an easy and safe way. This product features a sturdy and durable construction and is easy to clean.
Highly versatile, this filter features a threaded bottom compatible with most standard bottles and a hose connector compatible with most gravity hoses. It is the simple and compact option for your outdoor adventures.
Having clean drinking water is critical when you’re on backcountry adventures. Originally designed for the military, the Guardian water purifier removes bacteria, viruses and many other impurities so you can stay hydrated without worry.
Patent-pending self-cleaning system cleans with each stroke; no need to backflush or clean filter. Rugged design stands up to heavy use and extreme environments. Purifies 2. 5 liters per minute from nearly any water source and treats up to 10,000 liters.
The only hollow fiber purifier on the market that can withstand freezing temperatures. Drop tested from 6’onto concrete. Meets NSF protocol P248, the testing standard used by the U. S. military for removing viruses.
Also removes protozoa, bacteria and sediment. Made in the USA, components USA and imported.
Clean water is important when disaster strikes. This home water filtration system attaches to most standard spigots and uses a two-stage filter to provide safe and taste-free water on demand. Add it to your emergency kit in case of compromised water systems, disasters or boil orders.
Fast-flow hollow fibre technology uses polymer fibres remove particulate and pathogens. Activated carbon reduces chemicals and tastes. Threaded adapter fits most spigots, sinks and water barrels. Packaging is hermetically sealed for safe, long-term storage.
I use this filter in conjunction with an older MSR Autoflow reservoir (the red one with little clear window in the front) and usually filter into either 1L Smart Water bottles or cooking pots. I get good flow and great tasting water.
I have used it up 10 days straight without any problems. Be use to get all the water out of the tube connecting the reservoir and the filter as well as the filter itself for the best flow rate. Back flushing is a breeze.
Be sure to not let it freeze. I put in my sleeping with me if think its going to drop below freezing.
I used this for the first time on a 3 day backpacking trip along Lake Superior. Worked perfectly in combination with my water bladder. I could easily fill my bladder from the lake and be ready to hit the trail again.
Flow rate was excellent, never thought about it once. I was not planning to use it in combination with my bladder as a gravity filter, but I tried it anyway and it worked better than I expected. If you’re already planning on having a water bladder along, definitely recommend this, even if just for gravity filtering.
Big bonus points for coming with all the hose attachments you need. Only downside: this filter may extend past the top of your pack when attached to your bladder inside. I was able to angle it inside my pack, so it ended up just fine for me.
IMO Probably the best way to filter water if you carry a bladder system. Flow rate and ease of use is great. I have had no durability issues- so far so good. Hand Pumps are a pain to use and I’m not a big fan of chemical treatment.
A bit tricky while carrying a bear canister – but doable.

Great product. Read the directions. Easy to use and worked very well. Took a 4 mile hike through the woods with my son and I knew there was water along the trail so we just brought life straws and a couple bottles as a back up.
They performed very well and are entirely worth the money. Good for 1000 Gallons of filtration at 99. 9% effectiveness again giardia, cryptosporidium, and e-coli as well as dirt and sediments. Kind of thing that can save your life.
You can go 2-4 weeks without food, but maybe 2 – 3 days without water depending on your amount of exposure, environment, and health.
I bought this item for a hiking/camping trip in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and did it work amazing! It is an advantage to carry this around with you instead of bottles of water or a hydration pack.
I was not afraid at one second to stick this into a random creek we came across and start to drink. It is worth noting that when you first use the do not drink directly, the beginning of the outflow is black water, because the filter layer contains activated carbon, but do not worry just after 3 to 5 seconds it flows out of the water becomes transparent and clean.
After this you can drink it with pleasure! Do not hesitate to purchase this product and use it in a water source when you are thirsty.
As a survivor of the apocalypse, I can testify that these straws are great in a pinch. After the event, fresh water was becoming harder and harder to find. As I am in the Midwest, I had the opportunity to use this at an old, stagnant, cattle watering hole.
Despite the water condition, I was able to keep myself hydrated until I could create a more sustainable method. Works as described. Also, if anybody is out there, I have food, shelter, and protection.
The MiniWorks EX microfilter is the worldwide best-selling microfilter delivering long-lasting field-maintainable water filtration in demanding environments. Engineered for frequent and heavy use it utilizes our workhorse Marathon EX carbon/ceramic element to ensure clean reliable and taste-free water.
Thanks to its innovative AirSpring Accumulator it s capable of pumping one liter per minute and the flow rate can be renewed easily and repeatedly in the field ‘ no tools required. It s lightweight and compact and most importantly been proven reliable by thousands of adventurers just like you.
The filter works well, though care must be taken at times to remove and dry the filter element to prevent mildew. This is when I learned how fragile the element was. It is ever so slightly tapered and I tried to put it in backwards.
My mistake, granted. When I tried to get a new one at my local REI I was disappointed to learn they don’t carry replacement elements. With a hike looming I opted for iodine tablets, the newer ones with the flavor neutralizer tablets–they really work, and are so much cheaper, easier, and lighter I’m going to use them from now on.
I bought this august 2020 but didn’t use until yesterday and it filtered exactly six liters of water and stopped working. I was using crystal clear water from a mountain spring, no sediment whatsoever.
It just stopped sucking water up. makes no sense. i’m outside my one year with REI and MSR has the worst customer service. i had the MSR sweet water and the handle broke on a trip last year and after repeated tries to contact, MSR just gave up.
I’m brand loyal (been using MSR since my first stove 29 years ago and currently have a stove and cook set) but after the last two water filters leaving me in the lurch on backpacking and having zero response from MSR, feeling like it’s time to move on.

TraduciMostra in lingua originaleI just got back from a 9-day trek in Glacier NP with 9 other guys. I bought this 10L system to complement the 6L Katadyn base camp I own as we would be going through lots of water with 10 people.
The 6L did wonderfully on a week trek last year so I had high expectations for this new system. Unfortunately, they redesigned the filter so now it has about 10% of the surface area of the older canister-style filter, causing the throughput to be a fraction of the older system.
It was so slow that we couldn’t even use it (and we had as our water source some of the clearest water you will ever find, so there was no debris or silt at all in the bag, but we cleaned the filter anyway to no avail).
We ended up swapping the old filter and collar onto the new larger bag. And after contacting Katadyn to get a second collar and old style filter for the new bag, I was told they can no longer order the collar so the new bag is effectively worthless.
Thankfully REI is solid when it comes to returns so this will be going back. Extreme disappointment as the old style works like a champ.
TraduciMostra in lingua originaleThis filter worked so wonderfully for the first backpack trip out-it had fast flow, easy to use, and lightweight. On our second trip it slowed from excellent flow to a painfully slow drip.
The field trouble shooting steps to clean the filter are a bit of a joke (you have to clean the filter with clean, filtered water), and we went to our backup filtration system. After trying to clean the filter at home with no increase in flow.
The next step the instructions show for clearing the filter is to buy a new filter, but that’s an expensive fix, and I need a filter that can be back flushed in a pinch. I’ve decided this is going back to REI.
TraduciMostra in lingua originaleAfter some research, settled on the Katadyn system. My first use was out on the trails. It was so easy, quick and simple. I love it. Allowed me to refill my water bladder, rehydrate and keep going longer.
Can’t recommend them product highly enough. The service from Oz Backcountry was equally impressive. The product I was looking for at a reasonable price, good quick shipping.
I actually bought it for camping which it works great for, but my home tap/drinking water tastes bad. Just for S&G, I decided to filter my tap water for our bottled water and it solved that problem, too!.
Perfect for a small group, the award-winning Katadyn Vario is a powerful companion in a small, lightweight package. This variable filter offers higher output or longer life, your choice! A dual-piston mechanism provides continuous water flow with minimal effort, the rubber base a secure stand and an integrated bottle thread fits directly on Nalgene bottles (wide mouth). The capacity is up to 2’000 litres, depending on the water quality.

TraduciMostra in lingua originaleHad one that needed to be back flushed, but had no way to do that. It was completely clogged and wouldn’t function at all. Service was outstanding when I wrote it LifeStraw! Let me say again SERVICE WAS GREAT! They sent me a new one right away.
The new one was an updated filter system and they now have a back flush system, which makes the filter by far a better unit. I suggest a ways either letting your water settle out for at least twelve hours or more depending on turbidity.
If not have some kind of pre filter so you don’t clog the LifeStraw. No filter that cleans water at this level can function with chunky water, it just makes sense. GREAT COMMUNICATION AND SERVICE!.
TraduciMostra in lingua originaleWe camp a lot (old school in canvas), and I have GI issues from medical treatments, so have to be careful even with potable well water. I wanted a filtering system that was light and compact, and easy to use, one I could use to filter well water (and even rain water/etc) into my larger potable water reservoir, and individual bottles once we arrive on site.
This filter system took a few minutes to get the hang of, but once we did it was great. Took it for it trial run a couple weeks ago. The only drawback was when I tried to use the syringe to backwash the filter for storage the tip broke off.
This was not a big issue, we were able to still use it with a little more effort, and when I contacted customer service, once we returned from our trip, they were amazing. They required minimal information (proof of purchase and photos of the broken syringe), but sent me replacements immediately.
Can’t say enough good things about the products, the customer service, and the mission of the company to bring clean water to those in need worldwide!!! Not only have I purchased their products and used them happily with great results, but I have also donated to go fund me campaigns they have had to bring clean drinking water to places like Haiti after they were devastated by storms.
