20 Best Upright Freezers For Garage (2023 Updated)

So far, so good. This is a perfect size for smaller families and those who don’t have much space. These freezers became a hot commodity during COVID, as many people wanted to stock up on food that can be frozen.

Others wanted to cook more at home and freeze the extras. It’s quiet and the energy use per year is estimated at $29. Not too bad because smaller units tend to be less efficient. I have a few beefs with this.

One, it’s really not stainless. It’s a thin stainless panel on the door. the rest of the unit is black. Otherwise, it’s very modern looking. There are no shelves on the door, like the one my parents have.

(They have a more expensive one they bought from an appliance dealer). That’s not a deal-breaker. On the other hand, it will probably freeze better with those door shelves. The thermostat is in the back bottom on the outside of the unit.

So, you would have to pull the unit away from the wall to adjust.

I was skeptical after reading the prior reviews about dings and dents but after a little research, I decided to take a chance. I’m so glad I did!!! Whynter must read reviews because my freezer arrived in not one but two layers of sturdy cardboard.

The corners were protected by a layer of styrofoam as was the top and bottom. THERE WAS NOT ONE DENT, DING OR SCRATCH to be found. The freezer runs so smooth and quiet that I found myself checking on it the first couple of days.

My only wish is that Wynter considers making a slightly larger and affordable freezer. I would definitely invest.

I bought this freezer a short while ago and am very please with its performance. It has enough room to store essentials that need to be frozen. It has held a temperature just below zero degrees with a setting in the middle of the range.

The only disadvantage is that the temperature control dial is on the back of the freezer. However, once you set it to the temperature that you want you should never have to reset it again. So, it is not much of a disadvantage.

Overall, it is an excellent small freezer.

I was looking to upgrade from a small chest freezer, as it is such a chore to remove everything to find exactly what you want from a freezer then have to put it all back. And just when you think you have it organized to the correct places, you get to do it the next time! So I researched all the different models; read some of the reviews(you sometimes can’t rely on that as not all reviews reflect honest opinions).

Then I decided on this model, the 14. 1 Cu Ft Garage-Ready Upright. The features are what attracted me at first; having glass shelves, “see-thru” drawers(a large one on the bottom & small one in the center), having a digital display on the outside of the door to set the temperature & an audible alarm.

I also read how these units are made & found out that this model was the same size as a larger capacity freezer which means that this one has more insulation to keep things frozen. It is also one of the only Energy Efficient models, which was another plus! I had the delivery guys set it in the basement, plugged it in, set the temp to 0, installed the handle, & waited for 24hrs then moved my things from the other freezer to this one.

It has been 3 weeks now & I can’t be happier to be able to have everything organized & be able to get something without emptying the freezer! So far, this is a great unit!! I have been very impressed with the quality of all the appliances we have purchased from G.

There are so many things I like about this freezer, but I have to say there is one big issue that I have encountered. First the good things: The freezer is good at maintaining the temperature I set. I’ve used a thermometer and it seems to be spot on every time I look.

That’s great and is the primary purpose of the freezer! I also like: the display that tells the set temperature; the many shelves and drawers of different sizes for organization; the overall build quality feels good and looks good; and the size of the freezer is exactly what I needed.

Now the one issue I have is that the key / latch to lock the freezer is absolutely useless. I’ve tried so many times to use it and push the door closed while locking the freezer and it just doesn’t work.

If I latch the freezer closed and pull on the door, there is a little bit more resistance but it always pops open. Luckily the freezer is in the basement and my kids can’t get to it. If they could, I know they could easily open the freezer even if I “locked” it.

This freezer obviously costs more than the Sam’s 4th of July special chest freezer, but the added value is well worth the cost. The shelves and interior layout are great. Interior light is very nice.

I monitor the freezer temp with 2 different probes, and the temp range is much smaller than my cheap chest freezer. I keep both in my garage. The chest freezer varies from about – 12F to 20F. This upright varies from about – 6F to 9F.

All freezers vary with changing outdoor temp and humidity, but this one is way more consistent. It’s usually within 3 degrees of 0F, and that is during 103F to 110F outdoor Texas temperatures. The only odd thing is that it only shows you set temperature and not actual temp.

You’ll have to get your own sensors for actual temp. But I haven’t seen others that have actual temp either.

Seems to be working good so far, but will it outlast my last one of 25+ years. Even though this model is slightly larger in cubit feet, it seems to hold less food. It is taller, but not as deep. The outer layer of the unit doesn’t seem to be as durable and perhaps not as thick.

None of those things necessarily make this a bad freezer and probably the only complaint I have is how difficult it is to open the door. It’s awkward and unless you have a lot of food inside, it will move some when pulling on the door.

A handle would be better than the recessed area. With that being said, perhaps the excellent seal and difficultly opening the door is a good thing as this might loosen some with use and time. One other thing is how bright the indicator light is.

It is very bright, but unless you sleep near or in the same area as the freezer, this shouldn’t be a reason not to buy this. Another thing to note is how quiet this is while running. And let’s not forget the door ajar alarm…a nice bonus indeed.

Overall, I’m very pleased with this freezer, but we have only had it a few months as of the time of this review. I believe this was the best choice out there at the time for this size and type of freezer.

We did buy it when it was on sale, so that was a plus as well. I can’t find any reason at this time to not recommend this freezer. If we get at least half of the usage time as our old Frigidaire, I’ll be happy.

My failed attempts to learn why my 16 cu Frigidaire Garage Ready Upright Freezer does not have a cover for the motor/wires at the rear bottom of the freezer has me returning it back to Electrolux Frigidaire.

Home Depot spoke to a Electrolux Customer Service Rep who advised it was to prevent fires. I spoke to an Electrolux Customer Service Rep who agreed with me that it was “ludicrous”. I spoke with another Electrolux Customer Rep who told me I could purchase a freezer with a cover or place a cardboard cover myself.

I was first concern when the delivery guys pulled it out of the box which read “Made in China”, because I thought and had read Frigidaire made major appliances in the US. I also learned they have a location in Anderson, SC, USA and previous to that in St Cloud, MN.

Why did I get a freezer manufactured in Sept 2021 in China? Why is there no cover to protect what I believe are important parts and exposes them in a Garage Ready appliance? My concern is a small critter wanders into the garage, finds the wires and poof! No freezer.

I spoke with someone who has a Frigidaire Freezer, manufactured in 03/21 which has a metal cover for the motor/wires. I hope this is not a new feature, exposing motor/wires, the Electrolux bosses have approved.

Though I have spoken to an appliance store who advised the 17 cu Frigidaire Freezer also has no cover.

This is our first standalone freezer, and my wife really appreciates being able to take advantage of sales. It’s really roomy and works perfectly. The Home Depot delivery company were courteous and put it exactly where we wanted it.

Of course the big unknown after only a month is longevity; ask me again in fifteen years! The reversible door is a good feature for us to have easy access in our chosen spot. Some previous reviewers had problems with door sealing after reversing the door direction.

I found the procedure to be straightforward, but did encounter three “gotchas” that weren’t covered in the instructions, any one of which could potentially affect sealing. I’ll describe them here to help you avoid trouble if you want to reverse the door, and also so that if this factors into your buying decision, you can have confidence that this freezer will work perfectly well after reversing the door.

These are just additional tips so I won’t repeat the manufacturer’s instructions. If you haven’t bought it yet you can see the manual online. First, there is a little white spacer on the bottom hinge pin.

I didn’t notice it until it fell into the freezer. If you reinstall the door without this spacer the door will be sitting about 3/16″ too low, which may not seal right. Second, when I went to install the bottom hinge on the left side of the freezer cabinet, it wouldn’t sit flush.

There was a small round head sheet metal screw in the way. A quick check of the right side where the hinge was originally revealed that the corresponding screw on that corner had been removed prior to installing the hinge.

Remove the screw from the left, install on the right, good to go. Third, after you stand the unit back up and place the door on the lower hinge pin, there is enough grip from the magnetic door seal to keep it from falling off while you install the top hinge, but not enough to keep the door properly aligned.

It tends to sag down and to the right. The screw holes in the hinge have enough clearance to allow the hinge to rotate to the right as well. The problem this causes is that since the hinge pin is to the far left, if the hinge rotates then the pin will be too far from the body, increasing the door gap beyond what the seal can bridge.

So it is important to support the door and make sure the hinge is exactly square with the freezer body when tightening the screws. Follow these tips and your door should fit just as well reversed as it did from the factory.

I like this new freezer for its size, arrangement, and features. However, I would have liked one additional upper wire shelf to match the four that come with the unit. In my use, not having an optional identical additional shelf leaves an unused open area in the upper area of the freezer.

I was unable to reach anyone in customer service to inquire about this by phone or on the website – where the shelf seems to be non-existent. I did notice additional shelves for other models were exorbitantly priced, so I have decided to just build one myself.

I saw the Sabbath feature works, but there was no accompanying sound as described in the instructions and also no way to inquire about that. Other that these two caveats, the freezer is working great.

I also found activating and deactivating the Sabbath mode cannot be done if the freezer has entered a defrost cycle. I got around this by unplugging the power a minute or so and then restoring the power.

The anti-tip feature should really be called the locking feature as it does hold this very easy rolling freezer in place when opening and closing the door. According to other reviews, many people seem to be obviously not adjusting this feature after moving the freezer into place.

I like the door opening can be changed from left to right but having to set the freezer on its back to change the brackets made this out of the question for me, and I left my freezer configured as it came.

The interior of the freezer is extremely well lighted, when not in Sabbath mode, and I also appreciate that. I’ve also noticed this freezer comes to temperature quickly, and quickly freezes items placed in it.

I have mine heavily loaded with meats and vegetables, and I also particularly like the storage bins in the door. The green light at the bottom of the door denoting operation and temperature state is very reassuring to visibly notice.

The fact it will turn red in the event of a problem is also a great feature – especially since I keep well over a thousand dollars of frozen food in this freezer. Comparatively speaking, the freezer appears to be a good value to other choices/brands and I’m not unhappy with it.

However, I would have liked to actually hear the accompanying sound when changing the Sabbath mode or if the freezer experiences a problem as stated in the instructions. I paced mine in a large pantry beside my kitchen, where it fits well and gives easy access.

I like this freezer is extremely quiet (almost silent) whereas the sounds from my fairly new French door refrigerator can be very noticeable at times running – and especially so when it is making ice.

The freezer itself is nice and works well. However, Frigidaire has problems with their manufacturing quality control that is only discovered when trying to change the door to swing the other direction.

I had to go through multiple freezers before I was finally able to get one whose door could be switched. There were multiple issues making it either impossible or very difficult to change the door swing, the biggest of which was the hooked plastic piece underneath the door that has to be flipped and moved over to the other side.

On two freezers, one side of the plastic hook was malformed and wouldn’t fit into the other side of the freezer door when flipped over. Another problem was the metal pole screwed to the bottom wheel plate that also has to be moved to the other side.

It can’t be loosened or tightened with a regular wrench as the instructions indicate because the flat sides of the pipe are way to short to work for a wrench. It takes a pipe wrench to loosen and tighten the pole which of course scratches up the pole.

Also, the plastic cam piece that has to be flipped and moved over to the other side wouldn’t fit without having to readjust the bottom wheel plate on the other side. The wheel plate had to be loosened and moved a little further away from the freezer to allow sufficient room for the cam piece to inserted smugly between the metal pole and the freezer, all of which meant laying the freezer on its side in order to access the plate’s screws.

I’m very pleased with this new freezer, mostly. I think that it is rather a shame that to somehow save production cost, Frigidaire has chosen to provide less shelves. One of the key aspects of an upright freezer is the ability to access and organize one’s long term frozen foods.

But when there are too few shelves, one ends up with having to stack food higher, and in less accessible ways, which then requires the user to unstack to perhaps find the right cut of meat in the “pork” zone they’ve created, as an example, and then have to restack again, with the potential of the restacking not being stable and falling over or out of the unit and onto the floor.

From a refrigeration science perspective, this is also a problem, because if a significant amount of unfrozen material is having to be stacked up on the same shelf, the time for the full freeze to penetrate a densely packed set of packages increases significantly.

Too few shelves, denser material, slower freezing. While this might help should the unit fail, to keep the frozen material from thawing faster, the access and the time to freeze penetration aspects are more prevalent as long as the freezer is reliable.

Additionally, more shelves would allow better circulation of the cold air in the unit. So stop being cheap, at least 5 shelves, if not 6 would make a much better product.

This product will work for the one year warranty, but after that, it’s a ticking time bomb. It’s not a matter of IF it will fail, it’s just a matter of WHEN. Ours ran great for 25 months, but at month 26, almost to the hour, it just up and failed.

The compressor, the absolute heart and soul of a freezer just up and failed, suddenly and without warning. After careful inspection, it’s really obvious that the compressor is undersized for what its asked to do, most likely designed for a more efficient refrigerant, and it just ran too long and too hard.

Eventually, it just gave up. This is cost cutting and under-engineering and GE could have done better. The cost to acquire a replacement compressor and get it installed is around $1500, so do the math.

IT’S CHEAPER TO TRASH IT THAN DO THE RIGHT THING AND FIX IT! None of the appliance repair guys around here can safely work with R600a refrigerant anyhow (SF Bay Area, not exactly in the sticks). So, while we tried to do right and give it a go with a repair.

this one’s going to just add to ever-growing mountain of consumer trash. This freezer and all of it’s similar models are designed to fail. Not sure that’s a great strategy for GE, because they have plenty of competition.

If I could give it Zero stars, I would. When we purchased this freezer, it seemed like the answer to our needs. For 25 months, it was a reliable, trustworthy appliance that did exactly what was asked of it.

Then on day, almost month 26 to the hour, the veil was lifted from our eyes and the true SUCK of this appliance became crystal clear,This freezer is BUILT TO FAIL. Oh sure, it will last for the year that the warranty covers, but one day it will FAIL.

it won’t be a gradual thing, you won’t have a warning. just one day you’ll go out there and it won’t freeze. This thing has ONE job, ONLY ONE JOB, keep things frozen. I suppose that when it’s set at 0 F and it’s maintaining 31 F, technically speaking water is “frozen” but that’s not what it’s supposed to do.

The culprit? An undersized compressor that works hard for a couple of years and finally just can’t keep up any more. I think they just slapped R600a into an old-style freon compressor and it’s just not got the stones to keep up with the extra load.

The engineering that went into this thing is almost negligent. Cost of a new compressor plus installation and recharge? I got quotes from $1200 – 1600; THE DAMNED THING COST $800 NEW!!! Another appliance in the landfill.

Caveat Emptor.

I’ve only had the freezer for a couple of days, so cannot comment on its longevity, but I can say that I love all the features and the configuration of the shelves and drawer inside. Yes, it has 2 large bottom drawers, but also what I refer to as a “deli drawer” for small, loose items.

This is such a great idea! It is in my garage, hence, I bought the garage ready model. I let it sit empty for 24 hours (you don’t have to wait that long) then started filling it with already frozen items from another freezer.

I will soon start putting fresh items and am sure they will freeze very fast. Because I buy in bulk and freeze vacuum sealed bags of food, I am using plastic bins to hold and separate items such as poultry, fish and seafood, pork, and beef.

The door shelves are spacious and perfect for holding bags of frozen vegetables. Although I’ve only had it for a couple of days, this freezer meets my expectations and I fully expect many years of service.

First, I would like to comment on the “quiet” mentioned in many reviews. Many reviews mention that they don’t hear anything. The freezer does make some noise while it is cooling, which is along the same level as any other fridge.

So, this is not a negative point for the product itself, but I got the impression from the other reviews that it was noise free. That said, the level of the noise is so low that if you have anything else running or going on, you cannot hear it.

Second, we got this to put in the semifinished attic, it was small enough to go through the opening. The freezer is not too heavy (around 55 pounds) but it was tricky grappling it properly, so at least two people are needed.

It was definitely a very helpful addition: our kitchen’s fridge freezer compartment was so full we couldn’t find/get anything without major hassle. Now that we moved some stuff to this freezer, we still have 1/3 space left in the Arctic King, and we can now see the available items in the kitchen’s freezer.

Third, the freezer itself is pretty nice, especially at this price point. It is nice enough that we can put it downstairs if needed. However, there are a few minor negative things that collectively reduce the star rating to 4/5: 1) It looks “rough on the edges” in terms of quality control.

There were some smudges inside, the plasticky/rubbery cover of a small tube on the back wall inside the freezer compartment was half off. One of the front legs was screwed somehow at an angle. 2) You can reverse the door, but the hinge/cover left a mark on the finish of the fridge, so if I reverse the door, the mark will be visible.

In general, the shiny black plastic they used around the freezer easily scuffs, the top was lightly scuffed with just with the packaging material. They should have put those plastic protection films around the freezer.

Also, you cannot put anything on top of the freezer without using any liner/cloth because it will definitely scratch/scuff it up, unless it is something super soft like a carton box of tissues. 3) The thermostat is in the back, so if you put it somewhere tight (even with the required spacing for cooling) it is hard to reach.

Normally we wouldn’t need to adjust it very often, but we are still figuring the best setting for us, but so far it looks at 2, it will cool down to around 5F. Finally and BTW, in case you haven’t noticed, the freezer needs to have space around the back and the sides for ventilation.

Especially the sides got quite hot when I first run it. Now that is just maintaining the temperature, I can barely feel any heat, but you cannot put it anywhere flush with the sides. The top never got hot.

I ordered two SS Artic King 3 cubic freezers to install under a custom built counter (allowing for the manufacture’s install requirements) which has made them convenient and space saving. You will find my detailed experience and opinion below.

If you want to get straight the point drop to the bottom of this review. Delivery was an issue. The first pair was lost during shipping and the second pair was sent out 2 weeks later at my repeated inquiries.

One arrived with a slightly crushed corner on the bottom of the door, mechanical type scratches to the metal around the circumference of the outside and appeared used. This was fairly minor damage and I decided to keep it avoiding the hassel of returning along with paying the increased price.

The other arrived in prefect shape. These freezers are cosmetically appealing design and hold more than anticipated. They appear a great deal more expensive than the $135 price tag that was offered at the time of my purchases.

The thermostat control knob is located in an opening behind the freezer by the compressor so you will need to set it and forget it or pull out the freezer to adjust the temperature. This has not been an issue for me and is what I sought to create more storage room inside.

This is not an automatic defrost freezer which is good for storing ice cream (doesn’t get sticky like with auto defrost) but will build up frost pretty rapidly on the shelves if opened frequently. This will vary depending on your home’s humidity with how often and long you open the freezer door.

You can manually defrost quickly to remove the buildup. The wire shelves are not adjustable and have the coolant running through them for quick freeze. The bottom wire basket is removable and has been convenient for storing odd packages like shredded cheese.

The freezers began getting cold quickly and were ready to use within approximately two hours of plugging them in. It was recommended to unpack and leave upright for 24 hours before plugging in by the carrier upon delivery.

The doors are reversible for opening left or right. There is a recessed pull handle across the entire top of the door which provides an unobtrusive front. The front door also has a very slight outward curved shape verses a flat planel giving it a more designer appearance.

The manufacturer’s name has been lightly metal stamped as not to subtract from the smooth sleek appearance. Despite the shipping issues and minor damage I am very satisfied with the look and function of these freezers.

I should also mention while monitoring our electric bill for the last three months of use they have not impacted it in any significant way appearing to be truly energy efficient. The compressor is very quiet when it kicks on.

You may think its not working at first and will have to closely pay attention to catch it on. I highly recommend and still considering it a good value at the current price of $50 more if you are willing to take a gamble on the delivery.

This is the second Arctic King freezer I got from Walmart. The first was delivered by FedEx in two days, but the carton was ripped in multiple places. I can’t even imaging how they would deliver such a damaged carton.

Without even taking out the freezer, I could see mangled steel in several places. I returned it to Walmart (something of a pain), and then reordered another. This time the carton was in great shape and the freezer had no damage to it.

I set it up and the freezer went down to 0 degrees and has been holding steadily since. I wanted to reverse the door, but the directions said I needed a left-handed bracket from the “included accessory bag” which actually was NOT included.

I also couldn’t find a thermostat to adjust (if I wanted or needed to), even though the carton and user manual said it had an adjustable temperature feature. I called customer service, who told me that there was not a thermostat adjustment on this particular model.

The rep also said that I would not need a left-hand bracket because the one already on the door could be used on either side. She was wrong about the first piece of information she gave me but correct about the second.

I found the thermostat control — a large knob in the back of the freezer where the electric cord comes from. I hadn’t looked there because I incorrectly assumed that a thermostat knob would be easily accessible, like inside the freezer compartment.

As for the left-hand bracket, the one already on the unit WAS able to be used on the other side. So the user manual was wrong — there was no accessory bag nor did there need to be one. The user manual was also incorrect in describing how to change the hinge from one side to the other.

Turned out there was a rather large-headed screw (with a hex head) that prevented the bracket from lying flat, and so I removed it using a socket wrench. The manual also wasn’t helpful in explaining just how to proceed, but through trial and error I learned that you need to set the door in a closed, sealed position FIRST, then screw in the bracket with the three screws.

Having said all of this, I rated the freezer a “4” because of the misleading information I got from customer service and because the user manual was somewhat deficient in explaining what I needed to do and how to do it.

As for the effectiveness of the freezer, I would rate that a “5” because it seems to be built reasonable well, the door closes with a good seal, and it’s been holding zero degrees for several days.

Have had a few freezers over 50 years. Can’t say reliability in the long run has improved based on decreasing longevity but we’ll see how this GE fares. It appears to be doing the job intended and it runs VERY quiet.

Great! There are some observations worth pointing out though. 1) There is no storage area on the bottom of the door to accommodate larger frozen food bags. This is due to the presence of a pull-out bin in the main storage area.

We were used to the door storage with a shallow bin so. ??? 2) The DIGITAL thermal control unit default setting was 0 deg F. which is “deep freeze storage”. Maybe not an issue but the range of user setting is -6 to +6 deg F, pretty narrow.

Freezing as you probably know is 32 deg F and below. If the freezer is used for long term storage. OK but we are in and out of it daily. Thaw time for goods removed is higher than it was for previous freezers which we set at around 28.

I suppose the rationale is that frozen goods at 0 deg will take a lot longer to thaw in case of a power failure. Again, personal preference for a higher option for temp setting. I won’t go into my feelings regarding DIGITAL control system reliability other than to say a power surge killed our previous freezer with a digital controller that otherwise was working fine.

3) The magnetic door seal is so robust that it take a herculean jerk movement to open the the door. To be gentler causes the unit to drag on the floor. I’m looking forward to hopefully many years of reliable service.

If the observations as noted above are acceptable, then go for it.

First off, I was impressed with the level of packaging it came in. No way was it getting scratched, dented or otherwise damaged. Once all packaging was removed, the door handle needed to be installed, which was super easy.

Next was putting it where you wanted it and leveling it so that the door would swing shut on its own when opened to a 45 degree angle. I waited nearly 24 hours to plug it in to allow oil in the compressor to settle.

I have it set up in my living room,( I have a small kitchen ) and cant even hear it run, real quiet. Electronic controls on the door and the ability to lock the door were some of the selling points for me.

So far I have had it two weeks, put a split half of beef and a half of hog in it with room to spare. Totally happy with my purchase and would highly recommend.

While the garage ready feature is very nice, this model has a few flaws that are major. First, while it says it is 17 cubic ft, the interior is measurably smaller than the 30-year-old 17 cubic ft Gibson freezer that this GE replaced.

Second, the shelves are very weak and bend in the middle without being full or loaded with meat. I didn’t have that problem with the Gibson even with meat from 1/2 a cow. Third, when you open the door, the whole freezer slides on the cement, even with food in the freezer.

I had to put rubber on the front legs to stop the sliding. I’m hoping it will last 30 yrs like my old Gibson, but I doubt it.

Seems to be well made. Very quite. I have just one issue with this freezer, it is hard to use because the door seal is so tight my wife can’t open the door. The help suggestion for a fix was to scrub the seal around the door with water and baking soda.

This “solution” did make it a bit easier, my wife was able to open the door by using two hands and really leaning into the pull. Not ideal. I brushed some of the residual powder from the seal and once again the door was impossible to open.

You end up dragging the freezer across the room trying to pull the door open if you’re not careful. We were also told the difference in the warm air and the cold air can cause the issue. I should move the freezer to a cooler room.

Really, if that’s the case then this freezer is not “garage ready”. It was extremely hard to open when it was first set up before it ever cooled down. This was insulting, I’ve had freezers before and they were not almost impossible to open.

I don’t blame the help agent, I’m sure she was just reading from a script. At this point I’ve had to resort to using a wide putty knife to break the seal to open the door. The door seal was made to work too well.

I certainly won’t have a air leak issue.

I had to replace a freezer that died with the last heat wave. This one says “garage ready” meaning it can work in temperature up to 110°F so I’m hoping it will do just that. For starters it did chill very quickly to below the temperature setting in less than the recommended four hours.

I wish the temperature display on the door was the actual temperature inside, not just the goal. That seems rather useless! The door seals so tightly that it is hard to open. I wish there were more options for shelf placements and perhaps even another shelf or two for organizing things.

The top shelf is high so I have to look up to see what’s on it. I’m tall, and find this a bit of a problem so someone shorter might have more trouble. Overall it seems to be a good freezer. It does the job, although there are a few features that I don’t find very convenient.

This freezer has a lot of pros and cons. I purchased 2 of them for my home based business. One works great; the other not so much (and is currently on order to be replaced). While the defective unit does freeze to temp.

, the “brains” don’t function properly and they are not telling the unit that the appropriate temp. has been reached so every 6 hrs the high temp. alarm sounds and the unit is constantly running. G. E.

person came and replaced the control panel and the “brain” in the back of the unit but that has not fixed the issue which is why a new rplacement is on order. My second one is working properly and has tons of space.

My only cons so far regarding that one is it is a very tight seal so you really have to pull hard to open the freezer and the door storage is not so great.

We decided to get an upright freezer for our basement just when Covid hit. Soon after, freezers were impossible to find in stock anywhere. We wanted an upright freezer so it would take less floor space, not require so much bending down, make it easier/quicker to find things and have better lighting.

Finally freezers are becoming available again and this is the one we got. There are only two minor improvements I would suggest for the product: First, the front feet have an open center, leaving only a thin ring of plastic to make contact with the floor, so pulling on the door handle causes the freezer to slide around a bit on smooth floors (I added “gripper” pads under the feet to stop that).

Second, although the control panel/display on the front of the door is a nice feature, looks great and likely added extra cost to the unit compared to more simple freezers we looked at, the display only shows you what the temperature is set to, rather than the actual temperature inside the freezer.

The “brains” of the freezer must monitor the internal temperature so it knows when to run the compressor if it starts getting too warm. It would be nice if the display worked like my wine cooler–that display normally shows the actual internal temperature and briefly changes to display the set temperature when you press the temperature “+” or “-” button.

The “GE” emblem on the door was installed a bit crooked, but this freezer is in our basement, so no big deal. All in all, an excellent freezer and we are quite satisfied!.

Bought this freezer brand new, no discount not on sale from Home Depot, had it delivered and it came broken, thermostat and something else is broken. I filled it up didn’t realize the problems it froze everything to -20 degrees, everything has freezer burn and every few hours the alarm button goes off and doesn’t stop.

So waking up multiple times in the night to shut it off. One of there repair ppl came out to fix, couldn’t fix it then said he needed to reschedule for a few weeks later and order parts, parts came in and they canceled there schedule service Tech do to personal reasons on there part and they rescheduled for 2 more weeks away.

So In the grand scheme of things I paid full price for a product that will be refurbished, and I got freezer burn food and had to go turn off the annoying alarm every few hours for atleast a month. Every time I walk in my house the alarm is going off.

Smh horrible product and customer service.

– Delivery was excellent – We live in Minnesota, when the product was delivered off the truck it was below freezing. The freezer is in our garage, due to being on a truck and then delivered in our garage the freezer never really warmed up.

What I mean by that, the seals around the freezer had to be warmed to fall into proper alignment. There was a gap between the seal and the body of the freezer, caused some frost build up. After a small amount of manipulation, and warming up the seal it worked perfectly! Would be great if that was listed in the trouble shooting section.

Thankfully I used to work in computer manufacturing so I could see the problem right away and figure it out. Otherwise, very happy with the purchase, has a lock, an alarm to let you know the freezer door is open (more like a chime) exterior thermostat so you can see at a glance what the ambient temp is inside the freezer without opening the door.

Some have complained it hard to open the door, that is only when you open then shut the door and try to open immediately afterwards. The freezer is performing exactly as is intended. This is vacuum seal, wait a few moments once the slight whirr sound stops then open again.

GE has been making great appliances for decades, the products are reliable, well built, and perform as intended. Thank you GE for such a great product.

Since this was a gift for my mother in a different state I used site shipping. My brother and mother picked up the item that was in a box from their local Walmart. Once they got home and unboxed the freezer the door was dented in (bad).

Of course since I am 9 hours away and can’t return the item. Fortunately, the damaged door doesn’t seem to interfere with the workings of the freezer itself. It just makes for an ugly Mother’s Day gift.

Freezee arrived swiftly and had NO dents or scratches. Came packed very well! This freezer works better than expected! I have the thermostat set in the middle and it’s below 0. Very quiet and efficient.

Working fine so far. Was worried it would not have enough room but considering the overall space it takes up it is quite roomy. Shelves allow for bigger items like pizza boxes. Only negative is the shelves do not adjust.

I purchased this freezer because the Frigidaire upright freezer I had died after 10+ years of service. It was 4/2020, during the portion of the pandemic when people were panicking and buying freezers to store all the extra food they were purchasing.

Needless to say, I had little to no choices of freezers to purchase. This freezer had good reviews and the appliance store we deal with had just gotten four of these in stock. so I bought it. Pros: This freezer (21.

3 cubic feet) is very spacious. I live in FL and is located in my garage and the performance has been five star even in the FL heat. Shelving, etc. is adjustable which is a major plus. Cons: The shelving is glass without any type of lip or edging to prevent items from sliding off the shelf.

Because of the smooth surface, frozen items (frozen bags of vegetables, meat that has been packaged in ziploc type bags, or any other method) tend to slide on this surface. The only items you can store without them sliding off the shelf and out of the freezer when you open the door are items packaged in boxes.

I use the Food Saver method for freezing meat. When placed on the smooth glass shelf with no lip, once frozen, the packages slip and slide. Without the edge/lip, these frozen items simply slide out of the freezer shelf and onto the floor.

I have owned MANY freezers, but have typically had wire racks and not slippery glass shelves. I did purchase some “baskets” to hold my frozen vegetables, food saver packaged meats, etc. This did solve my issue, but feel the glass shelving creates a design flaw where the shelving is concerned.

Note: I did notice in the owners manual the smaller sizes of this model had the metal type racks. I am not sure why they did not put them in the 21. 3 cubic foot size model. Recommendation: If you can get the metal type racks instead of the glass.

We received our 21 cu. ft. freezer yesterday after being back ordered since June. It was pretty much plug it in and wait approximately 4 hours so it can calibrate to proper temperature before adding any new food items.

The part we had to install was the freezer handle which was easy. GE recommends there be 3 inch gap around all sides of the freezer. I noticed the freezer does get warm so proper ventilation is important when you decide where to place the freezer.

The inside compartment is well illuminated. It is reassuring that at a glance you can see if the freezer is operating and at proper temperature with the control panel on the outside of the door. I would like to see the inside shelves have some type of lip (removable) so food items like frozen vegetable bags just don’t tumble out.

The freezer does have drawers that can be used for loose bagged items and cubbies on the inside door. Overall, we our happy with our purchase and time will tell if the freezer will last for many many years.

Very happy with this freezer. Interior shelves and drawers are configured nicely. Lots of space and options for storage. It really is huge inside. The bright LED interior lights are great. Unit is quiet and attractive.

It is specifically made to be housed in a garage, and so far we have had no issues with it half way through this New England winter in our garage that isn’t always heated. The door can be a bit tough to open, needing a good two handed tug, but it is not to the point of being a problem and is actually a good thing since it means the unit is sealing well and operating efficiently.

The handle is large and sturdy, and able to withstand the extra effort required. If I had one improvement I could make it would be that the exterior could be available in stainless, gray, or black. Our garage is a working garage and the pristine white exterior does get dusty and glaringly shows smudges from dirty gardeners or back yard mechanics brushing by, leaning on, or grabbing a popsicle out of it.

The finish is easy to clean, but a more garage friendly color would show less smudges between cleanings. Time will tell how the unit handles long term use in a garage environment with extreme temperature and humidity variants, dust, fumes, etc.

, how the features like temperature alarm and frost free rate when they occur, and how durable the unit is overall (shelves, finishes, operation, etc. ) But my initial impression and assessment is that I’m pleased with my purchase, the unit is what I expected it to be according to the description, and assuming it continues functioning as it has so far, will suit my needs.

I will need more time to accurately evaluate efficiency and actual affect on my electricity usage and costs. If it is as efficient as claimed, and I can benefit from the savings buying in bulk allows, I will be reasonably happy with the value.

Though I feel the price was perhaps a bit high, if demand due to COVID, the fact that it is built specifically to be used in a garage environment, large size, and proposed efficiency are all taken into consideration, I do still feel as though it is a fair value.

Seems some sort of rocket gunrunner stuck the temperature dial on the back bottom next to motor. Plastic man can get to it! Otherwise it works even though no in the door cubbies.

I cook lots at once and then freeze in glass containers. Defrost when I like. It is quiet and holds a lot of boxes of food. Love it.

I filled it with mostly already frozen food. It took 3 days to get down to “0” degrees, the factory setting. That was after I put it on fast freeze on the 2nd day. Was a little concerned about that, but it is what it is, it’s doing ok now.

Runs quietly, not real crazy about how the vents are all the way down the back, makes it hard to fill it, and keep air flow cleared. Not crazy about the bottom compartment. What happened to a basket in the bottom? The adjusting legs are about the cheeziest things I’ve seen.

What a difference 10 years make, which is about how long my old one lasted. We’ll see how long this one lasts. Wish it had a low temp alarm. There isn’t any selection at the stores, had three freezers to pick from.

I had to have a freezer, I didn’t have time to order one online and get it three days later. My old one was out, but was blessed to have found it, before food was lost. Salesman really pushed extended warranty, said none of the freezers are made well anymore, which I already knew.

Extended warranty will only cover a whole $250 of lost food, and they have to come work on it first before they will decide to replace it. What am I suppose to do with my food until then???? Crazy world we live in.

So far it is running at good temps when I check. Shelves and shelf spacing is good. size after delivery is manageable. I give it 4 stars because it could have more shelves and spacing options. I bought a second lower shelf via amazon to give me a way to spread weight for 1 – 1/12 Lb hamburger packs near bottom.

To the plus side they give you metal shelves. I think the only other wish would be for the bottom to have drawers rather than plastic stop, but minor issue for sure. Due to other reviews, I reserve my right to change my opinion at a later date.

Please make shelf options more (maybe a system more like storage systems “rails- lift and move”), cost less, but 1000 times easier to find. At the present time baring some of the worst reviewer’s issues, I am super happy with it.

Delivery dented the door, irritating, but good luck even getting anything in 2021/22.

Only lasted 4-weeks before failing causing significant food loss in the hundreds of dollars. I contacted warranty service immediately. The earliest appointment wouldn’t be available for 2-weeks. The repair technician spent about 10-minutes with the freezer and determined someone else would have to make the repairs.

After not hearing anything from them for a week or so, I called and found out that a compressor and other parts were ordered and when they arrived they would call for an appointment. Two days later I received a text letting me know that Whirlpool needed at least 21-business days 4+Weeks) to find parts.

I’ve now had the dead freezer for 10-weeks. Still haven’t heard from anyone. It’s unlikely that I will ever buy Whirlpool appliances again. At this point, Whirlpool should just replace the unit.

It’s tall and thin so it can fit many places. It has a mix of drawers and shelves. The door closes and crates a vacuum. Most important: rated for garage temperatures.

We are loving this freezer! We needed an upright to replace the old freezer we had in our garage. We couldn’t have chosen a better product!!!!!

The freezer is huge. I was disappointed to not find where to attach an earthquake strap, but that does no detract from the fact it freezes fast and will hold everything I need. The wire shelving is well spaced, the door bins are narrow, but hold the little things that usually get lost.

I was surprised to not have a door lock, but the seal is so tight, I doubt a child could open it. Also this model does not have a reversible door which could be a minus for some. All in all, a good freezer.

If I win the Frigidaire Sweepstakes, I will use the prize to buy a steer for my family.

I haven’t had the freezer very long so not sure of the overall durability and reliability. The freezer is working as expected. It seems to have more room than our previous freezer. It appears the interior has been designed to maximum storage.

The only negative would be the directions for setting it for freezer or refrigerator (dual mode). It took several tries and two people reading the directions to finally figure out the combination of lights that should be on to indicate it’s in freezer mode.

Once that was figured out, it cooled down quickly and was ready for use.

This model is designed to switch between a Freezer and a refrigerator. And there is the problem. The manual says: While unlocked, press for 3 seconds. REF/FRZ will light up for the Freezer setting. Press for another 3 seconds for REF/FRZ to light up for the Refrigerator setting.

However, the plate inside the unit says Light on for Freezer and Off in Refrigerator mode. That is not correct. Since the REF/FRZ light comes on regardless of which mode you are running it is very difficult to easily understand if you have inadvertently switched from one mode to the other.

This is compounded by the fact to unlock the controls, the same button to unlock the panel is the button to switch modes and there is no temperature display. The control panel is inside, so you have to have the door open as you try to figure out which mode you are in.

I get designing to keep costs down, but if there were to buttons instead on one, this would be aa much better design.

I like this freezer twice as much as I thought I would. I had been considering this purchase for more than a year and the pandemic (so I could keep more food on hand) pushed me into purchasing the Danby 5.

9 cu. ft. upright freezer. My second reason was it would give me peace of mind if my refrig/freezer failed or needed repair. I do love how visible the food is because of the shelves. This unit has fixed shelves which may limit the size of the items that will fit but a 14 lb.

turkey did fit on a shelf. I am a little concerned with the two plastic drawers that could possibly fall if pulled out too far. I am careful because I don’t know how easily they would break. The quality is very good and was undamaged.

This is my first freezer purchase. I thought it was a great value and would definitely recommend this freezer to any one who needed extra freezer space.

2 senior ladies sharing an apartment were sharing the fridge freezer and it was too small for a month’s needs. They shop once a month when pensions arrive. This Danby upright freezer gives them more than double the space and it is organized on shelves and in the 2 bins.

They now have room for the special treats like ice cream and frozen pizza that they were missing out on, The quality and workmanship is great. They are very happy with it and once it had cooled they went shopping for stuff to fill it.

The timing of the purchase was perfect since it was on sale and that covered the taxes.

The packaging is horrible. There were several holes in the corrugated carton that went straight through to the freezer which caused dents. Also it looks like it was lifted on a forklift and was banged on the top which caused a ripple on the back corner strip.

We haven’t plugged it in yet because we are waiting the required 6 hrs as per the instructions. If it works properly I will keep it even with the dents. The size is just what we wanted and it looks nice.

, just wish there weren’t the dents because it will be sitting in my kitchen where all can be seen. The company needs to up grade it’s packaging though. I will update this review if things change.

It’s been 3 weeks since delivery of the freezer and so far it has been working fine. The limit of 3 temperature settings seems to be adequate. The Pros: The freezer being mounted on wheels is a big plus for ease of installation.

The LED light is nice and bright. The cold air inside the freezer is distributed more evenly between the shelves than other freezers that only blow the cold air out of one vent. The door shelf retainers are removable for cleaning.

The freezer sound level is low when running. The compressor has a 10 year part only warranty. Keep in mind that the labor cost to replace the compressor after the initial one year parts and labor warranty expires, will exceed the cost of the compressor.

The Cons: The freezer should come with one more shelf. I added one from the old freezer. The LED light should have been located closer to the door so the lower shelves would be lighted better. The freezer does not have a warm temperature alarm.

I will be installing one. When the freezer fails, the loss of food could be greater than the cost of the freezer. Summary: Overall, the freezer is a good value considering its “on sale” price at certain retailers.

We used to have a Whirlpool Sidekick. It was a complete nightmare! So far this Maytag is working great but it’s still new. Hopeful we can say the same in a year from now. The temp is holding pretty steady, between -4 and 4 degrees.

When you have the door open for anything longer than to just open/close it does tend to go up a bit but does always go back down.

This Frigidaire upright freezer was delivered on Sept. 19. The service tech was out here to check the unit on Sept. 23, because the alarm was beeping, and the interior light was erratic in either coming on or staying off.

For over 6 hours I had to endure listening to the beeping. I unplugged the freezer for 30 seconds and when I plugged it back in the beeping stopped, and the light was on. At 6:AM the beeping had stopped and the light was on.

Then it went off again. When the tech arrived, I explained the whole situation to him. He disconnected the beeper and also seemed to have broken the light. He said he would order parts and let us know when they come in.

Then, when closing the door, I hear noises from someplace in the freezer. I have told the place where I bought this that even though the beeping and light could be fixed, I would not stand for the noise of the freezer door.

No one, NO ONE should have to put up with all the beeping and interior sounds from a new appliance. Either fix it so everything works right or get me a new freezer!!!!!.

We just got this freezer. Good size, BUT it doesn’t come with a wire screen protecting the compressor at bottom back, like our other freezer did. Now we worry about anything touching it or rodents chewing the components and making a nice house for themselves cause of the warmth of the motor.

We are considering returning the freezer just because there is no screen. Very sad cause I like the product. Where we bought it from, we will have no problem returning it we just know it will end up in the landfill and it’s brand new.

All it’s missing is a screen. Not sure if this is a manufacturer error or not. I tried to get a old of Frigidaire but you are on hold for a long time(at least 45 minutes) and I didn’t have the time to wait and ask if they could send me a wire screen so I could sleep at night knowing that nothing will happen to the freezer.

At first sight, I wasn’t sure about this one. Higher and narrower than my old freezer, I wondered about capacity. Due to the freezer shortage, it was our only option. We bought the floor model. After a couple months, I can say I LOVE this freezer.

It fits into the space in the laundry room perfectly, much better than the old one. It is very quiet. I also love that we were able to make it open to the left. In my laundry room this is a huge improvement in convenience.

Love it!!!Everything about this freezer is very good! I especially like the basket on the bottom which holds so much…the shelf just above that fits frozen pizzas, perfect. Now I can buy 2 or 3 to have on hand and still have so much room for all the other misc items you buy in bulk.

Exactly what I needed. Smaller than a regular one, but hold plenty. I was going to purchase a chest style freezer, but they are not frost free and this one is. So much easier to store things in. Highly recommend!.

Bought this for the specific purpose of being able to hold overflow of food being brought to us whilst dealing with upcoming surgery and subsequent recovery. Preferred vertical freezer over chest freezer both for ease of access to food and smallest footprint.

This freezer was perfect in both respects. It is frost-free and EnergyStar rated, which are two other criteria I wanted in a freezer. Installation went fairly well, though the leveling was a little more difficult than it should be, in my opinion.

I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the freezer brought the temperature down to the set temperature – did not need nearly the time specified in the manual. Also, even though this freezer is in my basement, I did not want to listen to a lot of noise and the freezer delivers – could not even hear it 10 ft away.

Bottom line – this freezer cost more than I wanted to spend but the vertical type and the small footprint were my top two criteria. It was far less expensive than other freezers meeting this criteria.

So far it has worked great and I really like it. Plus, I also have the option, once the additional freezer space is no longer required, of switching to refrigerator mode and using it for storing drinks and snacks.

Would I buy it again? Hell, yeah!.

I was looking for a freezer that would fit in a small alcove in my garage that wasn’t tiny. This is perfect, it is really thin but at 11 cu ft, it actually stores a decent amount of food. One of the features that I like, but really haven’t used, is the ability for the freezer to convert to a fridge.

It really is versatile depending on your needs. Ever since installing the freezer, I haven’t really found a large increase in my power bill so that “Energy Star” rating has some credibility. Being in Florida, my garage is definitely not the ideal environment for a freezer.

It is hot and humid. However, this freezer has been quite a performer and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a freezer in the garage.

We bought two of these, one to use as a refrigerator and one to use as a freezer. We ordered these in May they were delivered in October. The refrigerator does not serve the purpose that we need it for.

We are unable to put milk or gallon bottles or sodas on the shelves because the shelves are not adjustable. Also these were delivered by a third party delivery truck. They did not set up the refrigerators, level them or show us how to convert one into a freezer.

Also they were to reverse one of the doors. They said that was not their job. Now we have to wait for another week for The Geek Squad to come and reverse our door. Plus one of the hinges was broken. Overall I would not recommend these refrigerators to my friends and I will not buy appliances from Best Buy anymore.
