20 Best Ubiquiti Outdoor Access Point (2023 Updated)

I am using these as access points and repeaters for a campground. It took awhile to get use to how the set-up works and it is still a bit of a pain. It seems I can only access these using a program on my computer that stores info on that computer while at the same time it needs to be logged into online to use a web interface.

When I try to access them from another computer it forces me through set-up again. When I loose actual internet connection, I have to reset the repeaters to get them to come back online, but not when they are set as access points.

I have been using them 5 of them for about 3 months now. They seem to be handling the traffic well and the interface is informative. I only had to unplug one set in repeater mode so far to get it back online, the other times I was able to reset them from the controller page.

I am about to deploy 5 more. Time will tell.

ALWAYS BUY A SPARE! More than once I have had a 1 out of 2 failure out of the box with Ubiquiti products. When they work, they work well, they seem durable, they are affordable, easy to setup but allow you to tweak the system to the max.

I love em when they work but hate installing them because of the failure rates. Oh and tech support on them is non existent.

Once I got the WiFi extender up and running, it’s been working great. I’ve been having a lot of problems with my Xfinity router’s WiFi signal going up just one floor in my 3-floor townhouse. My Firestick and my wireless printer were constantly dropping off the network.

Most disheartening is the fact that the printer is on the same floor as the router but in a different room. Getting the WiFi extender online was counterintuitive and poorly documented. The instructions told me to download an app to manage the WiFi controller.

What the instructions didn’t tell me was: – I need to create an account with UniFi – when setting up a stand-alone WiFi extender, you do not need to configure or log into a Controller – stand-alone devices are configured from the “utilities” section of your profile within the app.

– if using this device for personal use, you need two Ethernet cables as you likely do not have a Power over Ethernet switch Once I figured out everything above, getting it set up was a breeze. The access point comes with a plug-in power supply which has a PoE port to the antenna.

The mounting equipment is simple and sturdy and I was able to mount the power supply and antenna into drywall with my pocket knife. If you have rudimentary networking experience, I highly recommend this powerful wireless access point.

If you don’t know anything about network configuration, you may want to look for something more user-friendly. The “plug and play” feature on the box is a bit misleading if you intend to use it as a stand-alone instead of part of a mesh.

Easy to setup on the cloud key and worked perfectly once setup. This is a great little unit for the wall or custom stand/swingarm. Both Band frequencies work great and no frequencies interference. If you are looking for an inexpensive WAP that has descent range without going overboard on P2P distance ranges and have the same or similar built in software as the larger enterprise units, this little WAP will suffice very well! Great for any size room, small to medium halls, classes, conference rooms, etc.

Please Note: This works well with the range of UniFi network products and unless you are familiar with how UniFi networks are setup, I would not recommend this for someone with basic or no knowledge of wifi networks or wireless technology in general.

You would need someone quite familiar with UniFi to setup properly.

I bought these as part of a set of six; this five pack with two wired outbound ports and a single device with four wired outbound ports. As a relative tech novice it wasn’t exactly ‘out of the packaging, plug it in, watch it go’, because the devices needed a ‘recognition’ step via the network controller software.

But after I figured out the first one the rest were easy. Otherwise the device is exactly as advertised; network enabled for wired connections and seamless for wireless. Having multiple APs around the house is a big step forward for us.

Great product, easily integrated with my AC-Pro. No wireless dead spots in my house anymore. I have added 2 of the in-wall units easily fitted into my existing RJ45 wall plates. I have over 35 smart wi-fi light switches and other smart devices around the house, these 2 in-wall plates made a big difference due to the dual band support.

I used TP-Link TL-SG1005P 5-Port Gigabit Unmanaged PoE Switch, 4-Port PoE (Max 56W) for the PoE for the in-wall units. Brilliant Product.

This purchase was my fourth UAP-AC-Pro. I use them throughout my home to provide denser coverage of my home. I had one small area of my home that was a bit weak in WiFi. Granted, this area was just a corner of my property, but now my entire property is well covered.

Now, ALL areas inside my house have no worse than -50dB signal strength on 5 GHz and everywhere, including the extents of my property lines, does no worse than -55dB on 2. 4 GHz. My home network has numerous VLANs that are kept isolated for security reasons; keeping guests, surveillance cameras, Internet-of-Things devices on separate networks from my “home” devices.

Ubiquiti’s infrastructure makes managing these separate networks simple and painless when expanding to more access points.

This is my first Unifi product that will eventually lead me down the rabbit hole. I find the flexibility of choosing access points, switches, and routers great for creating a personalized home network, compared to an all in one router.

My current use case includes a Netgear modem, Netgear AC1750 router, Netgear unmanaged switch, then the UAP-AC-PRO powered via the included POE injector. I have it mounted on the wall in the upstairs main hallway of my house, more towards the bedroom side.

Downstairs is the Netgear router with its built in AP. Both AP’s use the same SSID and password so devices can connect to either. So far I haven’t had a problem with this setup, the UAP covers the upstairs and the Netgear router covers the downstairs living room (on the opposite side of the house as the UAP).

I am running the unifi controller on a Ubuntu VM on my FreeNAS server, which works fine but sometimes requires a reboot to the VM to connect to it remotely. Eventually I plan on getting a cloud key as the controller, as well as unifi router and second UAP for a full Unifi setup.

An outdoor mesh AP would be good for further coverage of my garage and lawn. This AP is definitely not something I would consider plug and play like an all in one router, but the setup is pretty straightforward and there are guides on YouTube.

Plan on having to mount it somewhere, possibly the ceiling if its easy to run an ethernet cable. Also make sure to use a quality cable to reduce the possibility of POE failure or speed reduction (Most CAT 5e or CAT6 cables will be fine, use a 23AWG cable for POE).

For the price this is a very expensive part of an even more expensive ecosystem, considering the Netgear AC-1750 performs just as well. Consider the UAP-AC-PRO if you have a large space to full, specifically opposite sides of the house or multiple floors.

The cost isn’t unreasonable if you consider a newer MESH system. Honestly I forgot I had it installed which means that it’s doing a good job. Before installing I had no/little connection to my bedroom.

The reason for 4 eggs is the amount of manual configuration, which was fun to play around with but is something required to get this running. I would rate it 9. 5/10 if the end user is comfortable setting up a controller and tinkering.

I recommend this product in the Unifi environment to those with technical networking skills. If you have only basic networking skills, you may get up and running quickly in the Unifi environment and find a learning curve each time you add new security features, as you learn to tune your WiFi environment, etc.

Networking is a complex technical subject and this is essentially commercial equipment. However, due to cost, it has a home market. Most people who use it at home also have worked in the computer industry in a technical capacity.

So your community support can be most helpful and I think it is a great, hands-on way learn, but the less technical background you possess the greater the learning curve opportunity and time to get things done.

There are also quite a few online. How-to articles and videos from the vendor and the community. While the controller is the heart and strength of the Unifi line, it is a work in progress. I could wish it was more complete.

The product wish list is long, but much of their wish list is for preference or improvements to existing features. New features sometimes have workarounds. Ubiquiti is actively adding features, bug fixes and security features.

Most of the wish list will be of little or no importance to you. Of what is important, it may show up in a release in the next 3 months, year or several years. It depends on perceived need and difficulty.

If the Unifi controller can do something, it is probably a lot easier to do than the old way. Sometimes it does not do something and the workaround is the old way. That is why you are best off with this product if you are a techie and a tinkerer.

If not consider buying a router for the home market.

I deployed this WAP in a federal building that was dated back in the 1940s that has abestos and 4 stories with concrete walls. We have 100 mbps service. On the first floor it’s covered all of our occupied space 2000 sqft with 220 personnel’s with laptop and mobile devices; so roughly 400 devices and all kept up at 80 mbps.

Our demarc room was on the second floor and was able to stay connected with 60 mbps. Of course you have to adjust settings but overall this is the most effective WAP there is. It replaced our horrible ASUS RT (4) with 4 separated network with constant drops.

I was using a D-LINK router and a Unfi edge switch with POE.

Fantastic Product performance-wise has never let me down. Perfect if you are in the Unifi eco-system already. I currently own 3 of these throughout my home which covers a 3 story structure, and a large dwelling outside.

It also covers quite a considerable distance outside (something I didn’t factor in when purchasing). My entire property is nearly 20 acres of land and I get a strong signal pretty much everywhere. My one stickler is my 2nd AP suffered a hardware fault exactly 13 months after I purchased it which was beyond its warranty.

I am unsure if this was due to a firmware upgrade or not but the AP stopped receiving traffic. it was broadcasting but was not allowing clients onto the network. According to the official forums, this is a common hardware fault.

This did not stop me from purchasing another one and continuing to use the product – the value proposition completely outweighs the potential risk of buying another AP with the hardware fault.

This is a high performance general purpose WiFi AP: – very good signal quality & range in a complex building (in my case) – fast 2. 4Ghz and 5Ghz throughput – high capacity for multiple clients at the same time – active PoE 802.

11af – 2nd Ethernet port to daisy-chain another AP (data only – not PoE) If you’re just after a high performance Access Point but don’t know anything about UniFi then take the time to understand their Software Defined Network (SDN) – to get the most from this unit you’ll need a controller (Cloud Key) and ideally their Router/Firewall (USG for SOHO and USG-PRO-4 for business).

You won’t regret it. This is the 2nd UAP-AC-PRO I’ve installed, 1 at home 1 at work and they work very well with good coverage in a complex building with metal roller doors etc. All WiFi clients (about 10 concurrently) max out their own WiFi speed long before the capacity of this AP could reached according to the controller reports.

At work I use the 2nd Gig Ethernet port from this one to a UAP-AC-LR 25m away where I need a very strong signal and can’t put a wired connection, this works very well – it does need a PoE injector to power the LR out of the 2nd port but this has saved me having to run another 20m of CAT6 (on top of the 25m) out of the switch.

I have MESH enabled and clients have no problem moving between the PRO & LR. Alternatives: UAP-AC-LR is cheaper with equivalent coverage/strength but lower 5Ghz speed/capacity – more than adequate for home/SOHO use UAP-AC-Lite is cheaper than LR with lower 2.

4Ghz speed/capacity (for older devices) and only passive PoE (must use adaptor not switch’s PoE port) – fine for most home & SOHO setups UAP-NANOHD is the next gen from UniFi (Wave 2), a little more expensive, smaller and higher bandwidth & capacity (multi-user) – probably worth a look if you don’t need that 2nd Gig Ethernet port UAP-AC-HD another Wave 2 product and high-end (twice the price of this AP) with far greater range and capacity, you may need to check your switches compatibility for the higher power-draw of 802.

11at UAP & UAP-LR are entry level price/performance and only 2. 4Ghz radio but if you’re looking at the AC-PRO price point then these won’t be of interest Cisco Meraki is a similar offering to UniFi and I haven’t used it myself because this came out a long while after UniFi.

I have been using the Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-AC-PRO Dual-band AC1750 router as an exclusive AP to my Internet router for two months now. I’m impressed with the stability and ease of setup. The WiFi coverage is impressive and easily covers my “standard” size house.

The web GUI is very informative and there is even a built-in frequency band analyzer to help find the sweet spot for your WiFi. Overall a great product. Pros: 1. Ease of use 2. Stable WiFi connection 3.

WiFi Band analyzer to find the optimal band with least interference. 4. You can switch off all the lights on the AP so it doesn’t bother you at night. 5. Great price for what you get. 6. Easy to extend your current WiFi.

Cons: 1. you have to have the Unify Controller Software running to access the web GUI.

I spend a lot of time with legacy 54M ubiquitis, bad chinese antennas and routers indoors with small panel antennas trying to make link work sufficiently fast. Then I ordered these superb value products instead of buying one Bullet M2 for ~same price + proper antenna.

Installed to antenna posts and configured them in no time. Signal for 100meters distance is more than enought for full speed. For my suprise this device supports MCS15 – 270/300 handshake speed. So it can probably in good conditions and short distance emulate or almost emulate 100full duplex cable.

Only thing that bothers me is strong upload download bias in favour of full speed download in speedtest. net caused by some sort of traffic shaping thing that I have not yet figured out. Speed inside local network is more or totally symmetrical if I read my iperf tests correctly.

This little spaceship looking item has just been a wonderful addition to our regular installations. Pumping out its glorious rays of WIFI happiness to all the clients that are within its range. No but seriously, it’s a powerful little device that sits nicely on any modern home/office/etc ceiling and can be placed directly in the middle of your home when your modem/wifi/switch combo unit cannot.

Ubiquiti is a great company with solid hardware!.

Ubiquity products as usual are top notch. I love the small form factor, powerful feature set and great monitoring ability. I like the fact you don’t have to be bound to a cloud service for monitoring.

Setup is a little specific, and I did have some trouble creating a WiFi network for my old 2GHz devices, but once done this is a great piece of networking kit and an excellent Wifi Access point. The controller software contains a lot of information, and even more when other Unifi products are added to your stack.

These access points are fantastic. Deployment is ultra quick and easy, and the experience so far has been painless. Will definitely buy again!

Fantastic product that really increased the Wifi Range and speed inside my home. The setup took less than 5 minutes and was so easy.

You have just found one of the best in the industry and buy them before some big corporation like Cisco or Juniper gobble it up and sell them to you for 10 times the price. However, it needs a bit of wrestling to get it setup.

I am an IT professional, so this is what I do day in and day out. I have always been partial to Meraki, but Meraki does not care to sell to Mr. Consumer so they have their ways of keeping us out of the club.

Price is high, support is higher and they don’t bother talking to you if you don’t have an active subscription or support contract. So far this little thing they call Ubiquity does almost what Meraki does with a fraction of price and does it well, and it does not require lifetime commitment.

“yet”. Now about the AP itself. it needs the software that does NOT come with the equipment. I never unwrap any media that comes with my purchase because of course “I’m an IT pro “, but in this particular case it is nice to have it in the box because the URL on the quick start could be old, which in my case it was.

Connected the injector and the watched the AP boot up reasonably quickly, but no detection. So. a quick Google search did the trick and not Ubiquity, and got the UniFy Controller installed. Oh. snap.

detector software and controller cannot see the AP. I can see the IP in my DHCP table. reboot again, no dice. Some web search. found out that Windows Firewall WILL block access, so I disabled it. Still nothing.

rebooted both PC and AP, again, and once more. no dice. Some more web search. and this is actually tricky: you need Java 7. xx or controller will not work. Uninstalled Java 8 and installed latest Java 7.

This time, I’m in. Setup was a breeeeeeeze. one of the easiest and kinda fun. I really like the statistics page where you can get all info down to what device is the high bandwidth user. Setup my home and guest wifi networks and that’s about it.

my Juniper SRX router will do the rest for me. So. go for it. I am extremely happy. good range, good stats and good management. If you really need to know, you do not need to have the controller run on a server at all times.

It only needs to be running if you are setting a guest portal, like when you connect your phone to a public wifi and are redirected to a web page where you gotta put other info. Otherwise it is only required to program the darn thing.

It will not affect your guest or home network in any way. I love mine. and I hope you do yours.

Major Speed Loss!!! Here’s a direct quote from their engineering department after I filed a ticket with Ubiquity asking about some claims that these boxes are not 300 but 100 Mbps: “Yes they are 100 mbps.

As WiFi is half-duplex, the “300mbit” is the sum of both Tx and Rx. so the AP “over the air” connection in either direction is only 150 mbit max (vs. 100 mbit max in both directions simultaneously for 10/100 FDX of ethernet).

Now that we’ve got the OTA speed of 150 mbit, we also have to account for the WiFi protocol overhead, and CSMA delays, interference, etc. which brings the effective data rate down to about 80mbit. In addition to that, you’re almost never going to run a 2.

4 GHz AP on HT40, as it takes 2/3 of the available non-overlapping channels, and means that you’ve increased your susceptability to interference. ” I’m guessing they were hoping to confuse me with all that industry lingo – I’m an Electronic Engineer designing hardware and software for IoT home automation devices.

By the way the numbers described by their engineer are exactly what I measured inches away from the devices. 10 ft away Wifi is at 40Mbps 2 non concrete walls and 30 ft away I get 10 to 15 Mbps on a good day.

I bought this AP because my ISP router can’t handle LAN + wireless at the same time, and trying to do so was a recipe for dropouts. Ever since having this AP take over the wireless functions, the number of dropouts from the LAN side have dropped to 0.

I receive max wireless connectivity anywhere in the apartment, which is~15m away from the AP at the furthest point + through internal walls. Can download at my max plan speed of 100Mb/s, and runs 10+ wireless devices with absolutely no problems.

It’s an outstanding product.

The AP was not able to delivery reliable wifi to the next room to the one where it was installed. The distance between AP installation spot and the middle of the 2nd room is about 8-10 meters and only 1 wall between them (wood + drywall).

The possible reason is that dishwasher and dryer unit is installed behind this wall. so I tried a mesh system from another company and just 1 router without any extra points was able to deliver good signal to this room from exactly same spot where UAP-AC-PRO was installed.

So, looks like PRO is just a marketing thing. I do get that all homes are different. But common, I am not using it is 10000 sq feet warehouse, it is just an average size condo! So I am returning it and will go with a competitor’s device.

These were the first Airmax products I was setting up and after having them running for over a week, I have to say, they work GREAT! The setup was a bit tedious to understand but their are great tutorial setups and documentation online for Airmax by Ubiquiti you should follow.

I have these setup between 2 buildings that are about 350ft apart. Getting wire was very costly and disruptive to the area that it made sense to set these up. I was hesitant at first but was amazed. The station side (remote) Nanostation setup consists of a 8-Port Ubiquiti PoE Switch 8-60W and a U6-LR connected to the switch via a PoE Injector.

The connection is stable and works really well. Very cheap way to get the connection setup without having to stress about running cable/conduit.

Build/design of the case isn’t that great. I found that mounting on the wall distorts the case so that the top shell wont fit on nicely. Other than that it worked nicely and could be easily added to the unifi system using the controller software.

Now I just hope this product doesn’t go end of life as quickly as the other Ubiquiti AP model did. Be aware of this when buying!.

I have two of these connected back to my Ubiquiti 48 port POE switch and also have the USG Gateway and a 8 port POE switch – the quality is amazing, setup was pretty straight forward after I set my router to bridge mode when connecting the Security Gateway USG, after that everything has been amazing – software is great, no dead spots in the house.

I had three Netgear Orbi AC3000 mesh devices and they did not come close to this in terms of performance, security and coverage.

installed 3 of these at my church recently, they needed a reliable network to run sound from a tablet (no more hands on sound board, just one mounted in a rack with the amps, so tablet connection is mission critical), alongside letting the typical 350+ congregation get online if they need to download something, or people using the church for various events throughout the week.

I am a network engineer by day, run a 500 access point wireless network with up to 15k concurrent clients, so I understand the ins-and-outs of wireless technologies, but really, ubiquity is simple enough you don’t really need to know much at all.

Connect the access point to the controller software (adoption I believe is the term they use), create SSIDs as needed, test, and good to go. Annoyances I found – 1. Making even a super simple change to one ssid and clicking save, drops all wireless clients on all SSIDs.

So when I would make a slight tweak to my guest SSID, and save, all the clients on the main SSID would also get dropped for 10 seconds or so while the changes are committed. 2. The disable broadcast option, does not have a passthrough for DHCP broadcasts, so unless the network is statically assigned IP addresses, I didn’t see a way to block broadcast and multicast traffic.

I didn’t have time to troubleshoot this, but ubiquity documentation basically says you need a different system of getting clients IP addresses if you enable that option. Disabling broadcasts is a great option of cutting down on garbage traffic traversing the network, so I hope ubiquity adds some kind of dhcp snooping, or adds an option to convert DHCP broadcasts into a unicast to a configured router/DHCP server, or adds some kind of work around for this.

3. The ceiling mounts were a pain. These were being mounted to hard-cap drywall ceiling, I followed the directions to punch a little hole for the cable through where they suggested it, but it never really worked right.

I had to keep cutting the hole bigger and bigger, since the mount does a significant twist to lock in place, and there isn’t a place for the cable to reside between the locked and unlocked position, and the AP has to sit flush against the ceiling to lock in the bracket, with no room for the cable.

Probably spent at least 5-15 minutes on each one messing with it enough to finally get the mount to lock in place. Hope they re-design these mounts with more room up in the access point for cable to reside (cisco and aruba both have tons more room to fit the patch cable), or redesign the mount to click straight on instead of a 2 inch twist.

Ceiling grid clips are also super easy to just tuck the cable along the ceiling grid on a drop ceiling instead of dealing with ubiquities model that makes you cut a hole in the acoustic ceiling tile for the cable, and screw through the tile with a clamp plate design.

That means we can’t ever move that access point without replacing the entire tile. Overall- just redesign the mount please, it’s probably my least favorite part of ubiquity. obviously, being used to working with enterprise equipment, there are options, controls, and reporting that I would love to be included in ubiquity that isn’t, but for 1/50th the price (maybe slightly exaggerated), ubiquity is working as a great middle ground.

Controls and reliability that are needed without completely being out of the price range of small non-profits or small businesses that need solid performance out of their network equipment.

I bought this to replace my Apple Airport Extreme, which I have been using as a WAP for many years and is at end-of-life in Apple’s product cycle. I had very little issue with the Airport, but wanted more coverage throughout my house in into my back yard.

I didn’t want to put a mesh system in and I was told about this device. It came highly recommended. I installed it and boy, did it do the job! My coverage has never been better. I get excellent coverage in every corner of my house on all floors.

These Ubiquity devices are industrial strength. You need to have some technical ability to set it up and get it going. The directions are good and there is an app to help. I used a PC to set mine up.

Once it is up and running, you can ‘set and forget’. Like the Apple hardware it replaced, “It just works”. Placement is important, so take some time to plan it out. It comes with a POE injector. My neighbors commented that all they can see when they sit out in their back yard is my network.

Because of that, I have turned on guest access (just to be neighborly). I highly recommend this.

With living in a three floor house, this thing has evened out the wireless signal to the other devices on the 2nd floor. It was acting odd for the first half an hour, but after a quick factory reset and then two firmware updates it works like a charm.

Definitely recommended if you use a UniFi Dream Machine, but remember you’re gonna give up an outlet for it.
