20 Best Type F Transmission Fluid (2023 Updated)

My 2001 Toyota Corolla with 230,000 miles was due for a transmission fluid exchange. I promptly purchased this handy Gallon of High Mileage ATF. Took off the trans drain plug and drained about 2 quarts oil (all that comes out from the drain plug ).

Refilled with 2 quarts fresh oil. Drove vehicle. Drained 2 more quarts. Refilled again. Checked transmission oil dipstick and the fluid is looking much cleaner now.

The simple truth is you can’t go wrong or be faulted for using the expensive vehicle manufacturers ATF fluid. However, in my case, I do a complete change of my cars ATF fluid at least once a year, or a drain and fill with every fourth oil change.

Admittedly I’m over servicing my transmissions, but all of my cars are high mileage ( 200K+), and working fine. The number one enemy of a transmission is excess heat. It degrades the fluid and ultimately shortens the transmissions life.

Installing an extra transmission cooler, and keeping the fluid fresh will help extend the life of the transmission. I’m using Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle in my 07 Honda Accord, and Honda ATF in my 06 Honda Odyssey.

The car running the Castrol fluid shifts a little smoother than the Honda fluid. Other than that I haven’t observed any other performance differences. The Castrol fluid is about 1/3 the cost of the OEM fluid, so if you’re budget conscious it is a good alternative to OEM ATF, in my opinion.

Regardless of which choice you make, OEM or non-OEM, change your ATF fluid at least every 50K. That includes transmissions with ‘lifetime’ fluid. Search YouTube for the Scotty Kilmer “Should You Change Your Car’s Transmission Fluid?”.

I have always been a fan of Valvoline products. The only other oil that I feel is even comparable to them is Mobile. I built a 46RE transmission for my Dakota and was not putting anything in it but Valvoline.

I now have almost 5K miles on the engine and transmission without one hiccup. So don’t waste your time or money on a lesser performing product. It’s just not worth it.

I usually go by the owners manual And change my fluids accordingly. Sometimes I go a little more often, just depends on how the fluid looks. This is what the factory recommends. Works great!

I was so happy in how easily the cap came off of the container and the flow of the fluid was mesmerizing. Watching it pour effortlessly from the container put my mind at rest knowing my transmission would know that I cherish its performance and that I would try with everything that I am to protect it from the harsh realities of life on the road.

Caution be aware of your vehicle’s mfg. requirement’s. Do not use this where Dexron VI is recommended, only Dexron III. Unless you don’t care if you burn up your transmission. Castrol product’s are my favorite, except for some high-performance application’s (like motorcycles, go-kart’s) then it is Maxima lubricant’s.

This is after decades of using trying almost everything else. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, never had an engine failure due to poor lubrication or excessive wear.

Price is right and the oil has proved itself in my 90 Volvo 740. I drive it hard and have flushed it before with this ATF. I am about to change it after many years of use. Oil still smells good and the transmission shifts fine but there is evidence of darkening on the dip stick (probably clutch friction material).

Preventive maintenance is the key to avoiding expensive automatic transmission repairs. So I use 12 quarts to flush through the trans to expel all the old fluid. Expensive to use that much but not as expensive as repairing the trans.

Machine flushing in a garage uses 15 to 16 quarts! I am a retired mechanic.

Great quality transmission fluid is a must for your vehicles! I only use the best fluids and this certainly met my expectations!! I give it two thumbs up!

Developed noise in the power steering pump on a Ford freestar. Changed hose’s, flushed all original fluid, pulled a vacuum numerous times. Tried ford mercon, then mercon v. Different brands, barsleak trans fix, and even amsoil signature.

Last time trying I used royal purple and it worked. I very rarely whines when I first start it and never while driving, no matter how hot it gets. Made me a believer.

Royal Purple. That really is all that NEEDS to be said. I used to use another brand of synthetic lubricants exclusively. I recently decided to try this brand and I am pretty sure that IT will be my new exclusive choice.

I DO think it’s pricey (just like the “other” brand was compared to conventional oils) but I see it as buying insurance. I have a 1994 Chevy Blazer with almost 200 K miles on it. I would love to get another 200 K or more.

I guess we’ll see.

Ever since 2003 I have always used Royal Purple products in my vehicles and have not been disappointed. I use it in my engine, transmission, front and rear differentials, and transfer case.

First of all I’m not a fan of the fill for life Transmissions all manufactures promote when you purchase a new Vehicle. As long as the Transmission makes it pass their warranty then they are off the hook for repairs.

If you read your manufactures manual you would find that you may need to change the oil sooner then you think. Every vehicle is different but remember this , you change your engine oil often why not your transmission? The change interval should be no more then 50 thousand miles.

After talking with Ryder Technicians and Transmission shops and reading my manual you will find that it will be sooner then that. Protect your investment and Family when you on the road and service your transmission to increase the life Reliability of it.

I have a 2018 F 150 with the 10 speed (10R80) and installed an B&M transmission dipstick and PML transmission cover with drain plug to service my transmission. Amsoil transmission fluid will last twice as long compare to stock fluid, give your transmission the protection it needs.

Here’s the deal folks, I’ve been using and promoting Amsoil Products since 1997. That said, I will continue to use them and nothing else! Now. That all said, and i am gonna be honest here Folks, I have measured my Miles Per Gallon on fuel consumption â›½ï¸ and I am Really sad to say, whether or not the Vehicle or Truck is New, Old, or in between, Hi milage or Low milage on the ODO.

I have NOT measured or gotten not 1†further on Fuel. No big deal to me, I am using the products because I’ve torn down some small engines and some Big Block n Small Block’s and I’am here to Tell ya that the Wear on All of the Internals is Non Existent, and I mean down right Impressive! So, I suppose if people are getting some more MPG’S that’s great.

Personally i am not seeing it at all. But on the other side of wear N Tear??? Absolutely remarkable!!! As far as the Tranny Fluid is concerned, I am in the process of Converting our 2018 Ford Edge 6F50 six speed Automatic over to Amsoil Fluid.

It’s half again as Expensive as the FORD FLUID From Rock Auto ( including shipping ), But I believe it is a Far Better Fluid with better wear characteristics than the OEM which is made by Someone I’am certain.

So, I’am a Loyal Amsoil Customer and User and Promoter of All Lube n Fuel n Gear Oil additives from Amsoil and will continue to be in the future. Biggest concern for me is the High Costs of the Amsoil Products.

I purchased 5QTS to complete a drain and fill on my 2019 Ford Escape with the 6R35 Transmission — this is not “officially” licensed by Ford but is recommended by Valvoline for use with the Mercon LV specs– the transmission is a joint development from Chevrolet and Ford – I compared the specs from the Mercon LV fluid and the ONLY difference is the viscosity at -40C – not even a concern for the climate I live in.

After the drain and fill my car shifts smoother and softer, it’s has pep, and I feel like it drives like the day it was purchased. I would def purchase again to keep on schedule with my transmission maintenance.

I can’t comment on longevity as of yet seeing the change just happened but I will say after doing research and knowing how the Mercon LV fluid degrades over time I’m hopeful this will be more durable since it is a synthetic fluid.

Time will tell. All that to say if you have Ford that requires LV — don’t stress it — order it. it works!.

I have been using this since I built a new trans for my daily driver. I have used this 4 times in a row, the fluid seems to hold up well. I do not see much “sludge” in the bottom of the trans pan (there is always some in an automatic, but it does seem to be notably less on this fluid).

It still looks mostly clean and of a nice slightly darker pink color when I flush it around 36,000 miles. I have never seen this fluid burn or discolor badly, though I do not run extreme intervals. I am confident that I could push this fluid well beyond the 36,000 mile recommended interval from GM for my 2008 car ( I know a lot of newer cars have longer intervals) but do not see a reason to take the risk.

Dexron VI is a good fluid spec anyway, buy I view the extra few dollars for a good synthetic as a small insurance policy to keep my transmission healthy. I would recommend the fluid, but I would also recommend looking for a sale price on it.

Also, ignore the 2 star rating, seems irrelevant, and is only disappointment that Dexron VI is not a lower spec fluid? Not actually a review of this fluid.

Good Stuff. Trans really performed well. After drain and fill. Expensive tho. They must liquify gold into the fluid. 🙂 Can’t find it cheap anywhere. O well it works great. And is factory recommended for newer GM vehicles.

Did some research on what to put in my Night Train primary. Ran across a bunch of info saying to use ATF. Type F being the most common. I picked this up because it is available and cheap. I can tell you I didn’t get to the first stop sign and noticed a big difference.

This was like a new bike. The clutch was better than it ever was. I didn’t think a fluid change could make that much diff but it did. This is thinner than oil there for allows the clutch better grabbing.

ATF is designed for high heat so no issues there and has plenty of detergent so the stator is kept clean. Try it out. You will LOVE it.

Ok. Got it quickly. That is nice. But it’s oil! Pretty bottle color I guess. What would be great is included information revealing who manufactures it and how it fares relative to other brands. We’ll find out once utilized.

Buy a fluid extractor, suck out the contents of your transmission. pour exact amount as replacement of Valvoline. and you will never (or shouldn’t have to) have transmission problems for the life of your vehicle.

I’ve been doing this with my 2002 Chevy Avalanche I purchased new. now with almost 250,000 miles. The fluid looks like strawberry soda (don’t drink it though!) and shifts like new. I was told early on that transmission fluid wears out due to heat and keeping it fresh insures long transmission life.

I do process once a year.

I bought a gallon bottle of transmission fluid for my fathers veichle. Because it was my dad’s veichle I was not familar with where things were under the hood. So I asked the salesman if he could put it in for me.

He did not even read the label on the bottle and started to pour it into the oil holder. I stopped him and told him that is where oil goes and told him I would do it myself. I looked up a video on youtube and watched how to install it and did it myself.

You tube is amazing no matter what information you need to know.

I put B&M Trick Shift in my TH-400 many years ago. The transmission is 50 years old now and never been rebuilt. It is behind a 396/350hp Chevelle. The transmission has a shift kit for firmer shifts, which in combination with the B&M makes for some head snapping and tire chirping shifts.

At this point I dare not mess with a good thing!.

My opinion is this is some of the best transmission fluid for a older model TH350 or TH400 that has a shift kit. I’ve used B&M Trick Shift for 15 years or more and never had any !!! Tranny issues. I’ve been through (2) motors and still using the same tranny.

Tranny guy says clutches looks very good no need to rebuild. GREAT STUFF !!.

I use this in the primary case for my Harleys 100K on 1 bike and 70K on second . Have used this fluid sense day one . And have not changed either clutch

I own a JDM car so I wanted the best Oils for it. In Motul I have them as I use only synthetic oils and the car was original designed to use them so it seemed silly not too.

Motul atf is the very best. Keeps your transmission running like a very well oiled machine. Quiet and shifting properly

This is a durable transmission fluid brand. Has always came through for me. Great for 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ.

This product is not certified by Ford for Mercon V applications. It is merely recommended by Valvoline for such use. I used this in my 2006 Crown Vic, and it developed a wicked case of torque shudder immediately afterward.

A few drain and fills with actual Motorcraft Mercon V solved the problem. I wish O’ Reilly offered Motorcraft Mercon V as an in stock item at all stores.

So there I was!! Standing next to my car cursing at myself for not putting the dust cover plate in between my tranny and engine on my 2004 mustang GT. I realized I would have to take the transmission all the way off to get the cover inbetween them and re-install it.

After a few choice words and some Busch light I went to work. While taking my transmission out I spilt 6 quarts of ATF. After I re-installed everything I had to head to autozone to grab another 6 quarts.

I sat under my car slowly filling my transmission with a syringe. It was a very interesting experience. I can tell you that the ATF does work. I have cried with it, I have bled with it, I have taken a bath in it, I have used it as cologne on a date.

ATF is the stuff. ITS THE STUFF.

According to maintenance book guide, My Mazda 3 needs 7. 9 quarts new fluids. drain off old fluids as much as you can. My old fluid come out about 3. 5 quarts. Refill 3. 5 quarts, run up the engine and drive around a few miles, drain off a quart or two, repeat the same two to three times.

One gallon should work Ok, two gallons is enough to drain the most old fluid out. The benefits: Get the fluid from your local store is cheaper and quicker than from other online stores Support your local economy; the city and the employees Ask the store to leave it in front the door so you can pick up yourself without get inside.

Valvoline Dexron-VI is GM approved. Valvoline has great quality. I service my Camaro transmission every 30k miles, drain and fill. No need to replace the filter and don’t need to do 3 drain and fills, just one drain and fill every 30k miles.

The transmission shift and its smooth like the first day the car came home.

I don’t know how else to rate it, it worked. I do prefer this oil over all of the non manufacturer approved oils. I trust the GM certification over the oil manufacturers self approval. Buying Dexron 6 ensures the oil meets the minimum requirements that GM set to be used in the transmission and that it has a certain detergent package that wont’ break anything.

Anything not Dexron 6 could very well be below the minimum requirements or use a different cleaning compound that damages some transmission parts. Remember that the owners manual gives the fluid level in liters and these come in quarts.

convert the unit through google if you are doing a flush like me. also buy an extra because getting the fluid level right is complicated and you may have to drain a little if you put in too much. I did a filter change and I exchanged it through the cooler line.

It was part of my 100K maintenance which I didn’t know was a thing until I saw it in my manual(I changed it at 130K) I bought it used at 104K from a chevy dealership, I assumed wrong that they would have done the maintenance.

I bought a 5 gallon hedpack and cooler line fitting/tubing which made the job really clean. it also happened to fix my rough shift from 1st to 2nd, so I’m happy about that.

The ATF is being used in a 2004 TB 4. 2 L engine with the 4L60 transmission. This SUV requires DEXRON III and manufacturer has updated and aproved the DEXRON VI. This is a high mileage (170k) transmission that I rebuilt at 85K with new reinforced SHELL, Bendix clutches, high volume pump and all new solenoids.

ATF total capacity is 11. 4 quarts including 1 quart (64 oz) of LUCAS ATF additive on every scheduled change at 50k miles, filter and gasket included. Works fine with smooth shift at all temperatures, with or w/o 4×4, specially when towing my boat trailer.
