20 Best Tick And Flea Repellent For Dogs (2023 Updated)

As much as I wanted this to work, because nearly everything I use on myself is natural base, it just didn’t make the cut. This is not a good product, at least not for poodles. This made my dog’s coat very greasy.

Poodles have hair, not fur, and it’s curly, which may contribute to why this product is not a good fit for them. I had to give my dog a bath after using this, because an adequate protective amount left him sticky and greasy.

Also, there is very bad misinformation on the bottle. I can’t quite blame the manufacturers though, because almost no one in mainstream medicine or veterinary medicine has any clue about ticks and Lyme disease.

DO NOT just use this on hikes! You must use it also in your own backyard! I should know. I got bit by a tick on 2 separate occasions (many years apart, in different yards and different parts of the state) and am struggling to overcome the tragedy that is chronic Lyme and other tick-borne infections.

Both yards were neatly groomed, with no woods in the vicinity. Ticks live and breed everywhere! Even Antarctica. And yes, they are very active in winter, too. Do you really want to risk your dog’s life by not giving him/her full coverage all the time? Dog’s die from Lyme disease, and there is no vaccine on the market that can prevent Lyme disease.

It’s not possible to make a vaccine against Lyme disease in either dog’s or people. The nature of the outer surface proteins of the bacteria will ALWAYS cause the dog/person to get Lyme. ALWAYS. Be smart.

Research everything to death. Go visit Lyme patient health boards for the truth on Lyme and tick-borne diseases. I have yet to find a credible veterinarian association or researcher who knows anything about Lyme disease.

Because I need to protect my beloved dog from getting the disease that has so ravaged my own life and body, I put him back on the prescription product. I’m not a fan of pharmaceuticals, but he has not gotten bit by a tick on it yet.

It’s the best thing to protect him, at present.

Love this natural spray as an alternative to vet prescribed preventatives which are pesticides. It smell so good. It works for us as well as for our furbaby. No ticks on either one of us this year so far.

Last year both me and my pupper found tick on us, though my dog was on vet prescribed preventative at the time. Tick didn’t get a chance to embed on either of us however it was still an unpleasant experience.

After couple of months on the vet prescribed preventative my dog started having skin issues and vet told us to discontinue use of it. So I found this as an alternative for this year and I definitely recommend this to everyone I know now.

I bought this a week ago and use it every day on my small cavalier king charles spaniel female and once on my springer spaniel and medium size cavalier king charles spaniel boy. All dogs are with infected with fleas and we had a hard time keeping them off with regular store bought spot on treatments and baths so we bought this product hoping it will kill and repel the fleas off our dogs and home and this is what happened after we almost finish the spray bottle.

I want to mention before I forget that I been using it everyday on my small female king charles spaniel and once on the other dogs and that I sprayed my bed bedroom every day too and sprayed the dog’s bed and area with it a couple of times but now I am trying another product because this spray will actually kill the fleas but the fleas have to be visible like on top instead of under tick hair or out on top of the bed or floor for them to die.

My cavalier boy infestection was the worst uyou could she them running and jumping and the millions of eggs and when I sprayed him all die and the eggs too. The eggs became blood and my dog had so many he looked like he was badly hurt off how much blood was on him after the spray.

He had so many dead fleas I used the flea comb to get them off him and the comb was coming out completely full but he did have live fleas on him, the ones that were under the ticker hair or under the ton of dead fleas.

The springer spaniel female did not had that many since she had a hair cut and bath with blue dawn the day before and her fleas were reached easy and died and for the small cavalier female most died except the ones under the tick long hairs which I got out with the flea comb.

I had sprayed my bed, bedroom and the rest of the house with it also my small cavalier female pj’s and as precautiong sprayed her body before putting on the pj’s and she walk out the room and when I called her back as always I checked her and she had a flea on the pj where her right tight is.

The flea was not jumping or moving when I pulled her out. We went to bed without my small cavalier waking up to scratch and sleep the whole night but the next day after we got up (me and the dog) it was a flea on the bottom corner of the outer side of the bed which I immediatly spray with this product and died.

I also got jumped by a flea on my sock when I opened the kitchen door to let my small cavalier out so this product does not repel the fleas at all as you can see by my experience on the bed, dog pj and kitchen door but will kill the fleas when you see them so what I am doing until we can get them to the bed next week is combing them after we spray them to make sure we we get them and for my little cavalier that sleeps with me I spray her and rub it to her skin and spray her pj too then put her in the bed and be sleeping without problems or scratching all night and do not find those flea dirt (small black dots that are flea poop or/and eggs) on my bed but I did noticed one thing about this product it does bring out hair out on the bed and dog’s plush toys.

Last month I bought the vet’s best flea & tick yard spray, home spray, dog spray, and dry shampoo. After following all of the directions and treating my yard (twice), home (twice), and dog (nearly every other day) it has shown to be 100% ineffective for deer ticks.

The product has a strong smell though not unpleasent once dry. After I realised it was not working I did my own little test. The product claims to repel ticks and “kill on contact” so I caught a few deer ticks and ran my own testing.

First I sprayed a small towel with the dog spray and place it in one corner of a large tote with 3 deer ticks places on the opposite side of the same tote. Within one hour all three ticks were on or hiding in the towel.

For my second test I fully submerged a fourth tick (not yet exposed to the spray) in the dog spray for one minute and then placed the saturated tick in a large tupperware container. As soon as the tick was dry it was up and running around again.

I opened the container frequently to make sure it did not suffocate (I’m sure it would not have anyways but for the sake of eliminating false testing I replaced oxygen frequently). The results were horrifying.

It took more then 53 hours from saturation until death. I am no scientists however after this controlled experiment I no longer believe Vet’s best claims and believe them to be 100% false.

I rarely write reviews but thought this was worth it and I am not being paid. I have a toy poodle and a Jackabee (part Jack Russel and part Beagle). So one short hair shedder and one long haired dog.

That is important to the review. Two days ago we discovered the Jackabee had a few fleas. This is the first time in almost 6 years of having dogs we have ever had fleas. My guess is that we recently moved into a wooded area from an urban area.

It was late so I Googled home remedies and gave them both a vinegar bath. We changed their crate bedding and then yesterday on the way home from work I stopped at the pet store and searched for something natural to help clear the house of any lurking and rid the boys.

I hadn’t really looked at the poodle yet because he is due for a groom and so his hair is quite long. I came across the Tropiclean line and got the spot spray, shampoo and carpet powder. I also got Advantix.

We gave the boys a good soak with the shampoo (left on for 10 min) and then started looking with the flea comb. Banjo the Jackabee still had about 15-20. We combed them out, sprayed him down with the spray, then gave him the advantix treament.

The poodle was a different story. He still had many crawling around in his long hair. I grabbed the spot spray and began spraying the areas where we saw them and it did kill them on site. We continued this and as it lathered we rubbed it into his skin/hairs.

Gross alert, they were dead but stuck in his hair. After this long process we gave him advantix and cleaned their crates again, using the spray there too. This am Banjo was tick free! Having short hair really seemed to help.

Tyler still had just a few roaming around- so I sprayed again with the spot treament. As for the carpet, I waited a few hours after applying the powder and vacuumed. It has only been a day so I will update to see if there is longevity.

The smell is super strong, especially using the carpet powder. Not horrible, but strong. I’m hoping we caught it in time and it is a closed chapter.

Fleas are horrible this year, it seems no matter what we do we can’t get rid of them. What makes it all the worse is that one of my cats has a horrible flea allergy. (Large open sores, fur loss, rashes, eye and nose issues.

poor Suki. ) So I tried this spray, seemed to have good reviews and it was said to be safe for cats, dogs, and around the house. So far. we still have fleas, but I have noticed a difference. So maybe with this we have a chance of finally being free of those darn bugs.

Ways I have used this product; Around the house I sprayed furniture and carpets, my family isn’t happy about the smell but it is tolerable. The dogs are being sprayed every three days or so, they don’t like it as it’s too cold and sudden, but they are quick to forgive.

The cats. I have only been using this on the one cat so far as I know the other three are more likely to try and kill me if I tried. She hates it, probably more-so than the dogs so I try soaking a cloth with this and wiping her down with it.

I spray a little in a disposable cup of warm water to drown fleas I pull off with a flea comb, although it’s watered down a lot it works plenty to killing the pests. I soaked each of the pets collars in this and put them back on still wet, this should help deter bugs a little longer as it holds the smell longer(?) and it helps get at least a little bit of this one the more finicky of our household.

I’ll probably find more ways to use this spray and hopefully with time and effort our house will be free of fleas.

Neighbors are completely infested, and now we have them too. I have been trying my absolute best to make sure we don’t end up like them. I used the hotshot fogger and was bitten the same night. So much effort cleaning and inconvenience for something that only seemed to kill my house flies.

After reading I decided to get alpine wsg, but I needed some relief until it came in. Im always skeptical of Walmart pet products but after reading reviews I decided on the Adams fleas and tick. I sprayed my bed the couch (the dogs sleep on both) and my entire upstairs carpet.

I haven’t been bitten in 2 days. I know they’ll be back and ive many more things to do, but this spray works. Their is a funky smell but it’s not really that bad as suggested by reviews and I didn’t notice it even 15 minutes after spraying.

The product seems good but the bottle isnt. Spray isnt consistent, and it leaks a bit, I got it all over my hands. Might want to wear gloves if that’s a thing you’re worried about, but it definitely killed adult fleas same day.

Would buy again, probably would put it in a better sprayer myself. If you are already infested, the reality is there is no one step. Treat your animals your house and your yard same day, if you don’t nothing will seem to work.

Me personally I’d rather properly use what the exterminators use. I think alot of people write reviews same day. They’ll be back. Keep your house clean, treat your pets with a 30 day option, treat every room in the house even if you think there’s no activity and treat your yard too.

Don’t leave a stone unturned and when you think your problem is over, do it again. If that’s too much for you, consider an actual exterminator. You’ll just throw money away half hearting it.

I have 2 indoor only cats and somehow became infested with fleas in my apartment. I tried home remedies to no avail and couldn’t stand seeing them so uncomfortable. Today I bought flea foggers and Adams flea and tick spray, after applying the spray while on my white tile bathroom floor I saw them jumping off.

So, having nothing better to do I say there watching them squirm and die for about five minutes when both cats, who rarely sleep together crawled into my lap purring and immediately fell asleep together.

They got some much needed relief. I’m not sure how long it’ll kill future fleas but I’ve bombed the house and will continue to apply the spray lightly until I don’t see any activity. I think we’ll all sleep well tonight and hopefully the problem is taken care of finally.

I highly recommend this product. Make sure you thoroughly clean after bombing and applying and definitely change the litter and clean the box as fleas can live and repopulate in the dirty litter.

Many flea drops used to work fine until they changed their chemicals to worthless “organic” ingredients. Shampoos are also worthless. The only ‘real’ treatment I found was Adams Flea and Tick Spray (for dogs or cats or both.

check the label carefully). Note, if you have a finger cut, the solution burns. So, when you spray it on a dog, the solution irritates the fleas. When I spray my dog’s legs, the fleas come to the surface, and I am able to pluck them and drop them in a water cup with a drop of soap, to break the water surface tension.

The only problem I face is with the upper body of my dog, a St Bernard mix, due to his thick hair. If I spray, nothing happens, apparently because the fleas are so deeply embedded, the spray doesn’t reach them.

Otherwise, the Adams spray barely smells and works great on legs and areas where hair is not thick, per my experience.

One of my cats is allergic to Advantage flea medicine so I switched all my cats to this and it works so well! I was honestly shocked and it smells so much better than the others and it’s so easy to apply!.

Made in the USA, this cruelty-free product has a pleasant smell and is non-irritating to my pet’s skin. The strong lemongrass scent slowly fads after a few hours. At first, I sprayed it on my dog’s coat prior to walking and then later noticed him scratching.

After checking him, I found a couple of large fleas running through his coat, but to my surprise, I didn’t read the instructions, so this failure was all mine. After thoroughly reading the directions, I sprayed my dog’s coat and skin, then went walking the next day, and didn’t notice any scratching.

This is a flea and tick spray for dogs (not cats. It specifically states on the bottle). My dog is very sensitive. He is a big baby if we are being honest so bath time is very difficult for us. As a home with a backyard right near a forest and park fleas and ticks are a big concern.

I like the product and its smell. It doesn’t leave an oily residue on the coat like other EO products I’ve tried. It does seem to be working. However, the sprayer only worked on my first application.

For repeat applications, I’m now dumping a small amount onto my hand and spreading on the dogs. Luckily I have very small dogs, because this method of application would be impractical for larger breeds.

Smell is good, and potency is strong. Great way to stop the infestation before long term solution such as internal/external meds or pest control treatment. Cost was very low as well. We now keep a bottle on hand just in case.

I have noticed mixed reviews on this, but I think it is pretty good. The fleas have been terrible this year, even with a long acting topical, my dogs have been really suffering with fleas. Usually these sprays smell so horrible that I feel sick to my stomach.

This one has a pleasant, light citronella scent. It seems to be working pretty well, but I have been using it daily where they sleep and I give the dogs a little spritz. They don’t mind the smell, it doesn’t seem to cause any skin irritation at all.

I really like the fly spray it lasts all day and have had no issues at all. We plan to purchase in bulk and keep using it. BUT, need to work on the sprayers. The straw in the large spray is to long so when you get half way down it stops working, we cut it off to be just about a 1/2″ from the bottom and we were back in business.

I bought the small sprayer for trips but the sprayer is not durable and broke in the first five minutes. I poured it into the large sprayer so we didn’t loose any product but disappointed that it can not be used for its purchase.

I bought this product about 3 months ago because it was cheaper than the brands I knew but said it had the same active ingredients. The first time I used it on my dog it left this awful residue for days.

My baby is a bullsog mix with extremely sensitive skin. I was extremely disappointed and did not use it again the next month. Here we are at month 3. Both my pets seem extremely itchy but there are no visible bugs or bites.

I took my dog on a hike and halfway in I noticed her body was covered in bumps. I couldn’t be sure if it was allergies or bug bites and it was sunday so no vet visit. I came home and immediately used petlock just to cover all my bases.

Being that we had such a mild winter this year, the ticks in VA are particularly bad this season! Our lab/pit mix got his first tick in December and had two more since then, despite the treatments we gave.

We bought Petlock Max, eager to try a new brand and *hopefully* stop picking ticks off our poor pup, Jonah. Unfortunately we were VERY disappointed. First (and less importantly), the product is by far the WORST smelling one we have ever come across; the smell is reminiscent of rotting vegetables, and stank up our entire house.

It bothered our pup a LOT- he was miserable for 12 hours and wouldn’t eat a thing. Petlock also can cause some rough tummy side effects we read on the label- and boy did it! Jonah’s stomach was turning all night, LOUDLY; he lost his appetite and was very depressed.

Another issue was that the product is very toxic- much more so than any other one we’ve used. It’s especially for dangerous for cats, requiring us to quarantine our foster cat from Jonah for 24 hours).

While all of this was a major inconvenience, I literally told my husband, “I can totally deal with the smell, side effects and the toxicity if the product turns out to be EFFECTIVE. ” Low and behold, it most certainly is not.

After all the drama, our dog literally had a tick a day later. We called the vet and asked for tips, explaining our situation. They strongly advised against Petlock, saying it virtually has zero efficacy, that we unfortunately wasted our $40.

00, and that they recommend we try Nexxguard chews. I’m not trying to be rude or harsh-we really were hoping Petlock would work out, but it just didn’t.

This stuff works exactly the way it says on the label! I have tried several other brands including Pet Armor and none works this well. The scratching stopped a couple days after application. Two weeks after treatment now, and their skin looks healthy and the hair is growing back.

My older dog’s flea allergy symptoms are gone. No more allergy medicine needed. In my area, fleas are a year-round issue since winters aren’t cold enough to stop them. Any fleas the dogs might have picked up outside haven’t lived long enough to be a problem.

Any new fleas hatched indoors don’t live long enough to grow. I’m definitely buying more, and I’ve already ordered some PetLock for the cats.

My mother in law raved about this stuff and how well it worked on her dogs. On her word, I went out and got a box for my German Shepherd, who has been miserable as I’ve tried all kinds of different solutions.

Firstly, the price point on these things is outrageous. I’ll never understand why something designed to help us improve our quality of life has to cost so much. You’ll give over an arm and a leg just to fix a headache these days.

But I digress. Not only was this treatment expensive, but it didn’t work. At all. Zero change after application. And yes, I read the instructions fully and carefully and applied it exactly as directed.

It’s not my first flea circus either. So now, not only am I disatisfied with my experience, but I question the quality and consistency of the product. Everyone has a “one off” now and again, I understand this, so I suppose more research is in order.

Both my dogs seems to tolerate Good Fur Flea & Tick products well. Haven’t seen a flea or tick since I’ve been using Good Fur products. The packaging/container choice and low waste refills is a plus.

I love the smell -they don’t mind it at all, so it’s a win-win! The flea & tick sprayer mechanism works well, too. Gives a fine, even mist without dripping. During muddy Spring months I use a small bucket of water with a few squirts of Good Fur Flea & Tick Shampoo to dip and wash all 8 muddy paws – works great!.

I love that there is an eco friendly dog shampoo on the market because it can definitely be hard to be kind to the planet while being kind your pup while not being willing to sacrifice the well being of either.

I also love the pump it comes with because there’s been too many battles of me in the tub with my wet puppy fumbling around with a regular type shampoo bottle and the pump made the whole experience much easier.

This product was simply amazing! I use it when we go hiking to keep me and my family/siblings safe. It is a great defense against bugs and unwanted critters. The sent isn’t strong at all, and uses natural ingredients which I love! Highly recommend this product.

I used this product as directed and it did not work – it only was ever effective at making my dog resent me for the peppermint smell. WARNING this products spray bottle showed up broken and leaking on my doorstep – but chewy was there for me and replaced the entire package for free and sent me all new products – It is just a poor design for the Spray Bottle as the lid has very few threads on it and pops off far too easily.

the fleas bathe in it like it was a party time jacuzzi – they seem unbothered by the spray – (and I used two bottles worth over 3 weeks time) Find something else if your dog has fleas. The fleas are not very bothered by the spray even if you comb it through and rub it into the coat – it provides temporary relief from bites but they come back in a few hours – I deep cleaned all my linnens and doggy items – and sprayed down the entire area multiple times (at least 6 cycles) and the fleas just laughed at us.

I never use store bought pills or drops they are horrible !! For years I’ve used all natural spray made by people who truly care ! We love Skouts Honor!! We have told all our friends about this amazing product and we hope to use it for years to come !! Alyse Goldberg.

First time I have used defenders grease band, doubt if I wii again. I cut the required length with scissors so there was not a jagged edge abd when I opened the tape the fold split down where the grease was.

Tried another length and that opened up ok The third length split down the fold again. Had to go to the shop to get some more as I did not now have enough. The next three stips opened up fine.

My vet fitted a flea collar which did not work so I tried the Toldi which was a quarter of the price. It came perfectly packaged and smelt of Lavender upon opening. She has been wearing it nearly 3 months now and was leaving flea evidence everywhere she went, but not now.

I noticed the difference very quickly and even if it doesn’t last much longer I have bought a second one ready for her. Very Impressed so far.

My Toldi cat flea collar arrived today, before estimated arrival time, and to my surprise and delight, the lovely people at Toldi Pets had also sent me two extra free items! a pet groom glove and flea & tick spray – how lovely of them! Thanks guys can’t wait to use the flea collar.
