20 Best Tankless Water Heater For Large Home (2023 Updated)

I had bought a N-120 a while back then after about 18 months as soon as the warranty ran out,It stopped working. Electrician came out for $125 and told me my power is fine the Titan N-120 is the problem and he said they are “junk”.

I had to pay Titan (Niagara Industries) another $50 to “FIX” it. I paid the Plumber/Electrician another $100 to re-install it. I have to say that while it was getting repaired for 2 weeks we had NO HOT WATER IN OUR HOME.

It was back working but short lived as it then lasted 14 months then died. Complained to Niagara / Titan and was told I should BUY a second unit to keep as a spare when the tank goes down !!! Are you kidding me ?? Sent it back ,another $100 for plumber and $50 again to Titan and the plumber / electrician felt bad and put it back in for free this time.

This 3rd time repair lasted almost a year and a half then died. I am DONE with this POORLY MADE GARBAGE and bought a regular 50 gallon electric tank and have wonderful HOT HOT water again ,NOT luke warm as the Titan always provided.

SAVE THE HEADACHE AND MONEY and buy anything other than a tankless water heater made by NIAGARA INDUSTRIES or TITAN (same place in Miami FL. ) HORRIBLE !!.

Despite the desire to open it up i have refrained. The pictures on line are good enough until it has an issue. I suspect the SCR’s are common. The flow switch is only protected by a screen so a quality pre filter and check valve is smart.

A flow restriction after and regulator prior will provide predictable operation. Most of the parts seem to be avaliable and easely replaced. I installed it a few weeks ago and after the addition of the regulator prior its perfect.

I braised four copper 1/4″ tubes around a 2″ copper pipe under the tub in the drain line as a heat exchanger to recover wasted heat. It pre heats water to heater as it looks at incoming water temp. This and a low flow offers 118 degree water at 3.

5Kw ground is 53 preheater can pick up 10. It will crank at 21Kw and fill the tub also. It can be very efficient and also provide a luxury wasteful flow rate and high temp.

Product works really good even with a well in WNY. Only problem i found and to me it isnt a huge issue but when the well kicks on and off there is a fluctuation in temperature. I like the product i installed everything myself its not hard but i have a pretty vast general knowledge of a-lot.

So electrical / soldering pipes isnt hard i actually enjoyed installing it. But since your two 220 lines to this device i would recommend having electrical background. Thanks!.

Been less than one year of ownership. Very satisfied with the install. Hardest part was finding an installer that wasn’t looking to retire after this one job. Prices were all over the board but couldn’t say enough good about the company that finally did the deed.

Looking forward to many years of hot water, lower cost, less maintenance and the space regained as a result of removing the old 40 gallon tank.

This is a “Value” series of Rinnai tankless water heaters. Installation is not easy as noted by other reviews of this product. Be prepared to spend considerable effort in installing this product. The most significant issue is venting.

The installation manual only references “local codes and ordances” which is not much help for a DYI install. This product was purchased to replace a Bosch tankless which used a Type B vent however Rinnai requires as special ” Condensing Ventilation” which is completely different.

If you purchase this product you must add cost of the specialized ventilation components which are are more that the Type B ventilation components. The most information for DYI installation is YouTube as the manual constantly references a “certified” Rinnai contractors.

The other major issue is that you must connect this product to a 120 vAC source for the NG model. This requires running a 120 vAC to the tankless water heater connected to a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to provide operation during power outages.

This product will only be used on rare occasions when guests are will be be using Hot Water outlets which is a good application for a Thankless Water Heater. If you are not a DYI installer total installed cost must include the ventilation components, UPS and Hot and Cold water valves.

I like the fact that this heater takes up a small amount of wall space and that there’s no opportunity for it to ever leak hot water on the floor or have mineral buildup inside it. I was surprised its a bit loud when turning on to do its thing (it sounds like a small engine revving up).

So, I’m glad this is in my basement. If one were to install it in the main living area near a location you want to keep quiet, I suggest you reconsider. My salesman told me it may take 2-3 years to pay for itself in savings.

I have 2 Rinnai tankless heaters in our house, and we have been living in this new-build for 3 months now. The systems perform well once the hot water is delivered to your faucets. It does take quite awhile to get the hot water to the sinks closest to the water tank (close as in 5 feet away from the faucet).

Once the flow of hot water has started, it is quite good! A few quirks in the system that our plumber has said to contact Rinnai about: Sometimes the hot water and cold water will reverse places. This sounds odd, I know.

I didn’t believe my son at first when he told me there was cold water coming out of the faucet when he turned on the hot water, and really hot water coming out of the faucet when the cold water was turned on.

However, we have experienced this “switching” event in the bathroom and kitchen faucets, which are on different tank systems. We plan on contacting Rinnai about it upon the advice of the plumber. He said he has heard of this happening before, and that.

The poor reviews are clearly from DIY installs where the installer is taking on a project they shouldn’t be, or “professional” installs where the installer is clueless to the gas supply requirement. Folks don’t understand that 199,000 btu of gas is equivalent of 3 average furnaces.

You can’t run 1/2 or even 3/4 gas supply for more than just a few feet. This is a great unit when installed properly. People also need to realize that the 9. 4 gpm is based on a 35° temp rise. If you want 125° water at 9.

4 gpm, you better figure out how to get a 90 degree water supply. If you are running two showers at the same time, your hot temp will remain constant, but your volume will decrease substantially. Don’t bash the product just because you didn’t know what you were buying/ installing.

Description of Complaint:I have a Rinnai tankless water heater that was installed in my brand new home in 2016. The water heater started throwing an error code and the water started going cold within 2 years in our home.

I have had the system repaired (2) times out of pocket and the problem remains. I have contacted Rinnai on several occasions only to get the runaround of why the system can’t be replaced and attempts need to take to place to repair it!! I have DONE THAT!!! This is the rep I spoke with a month or so ago and recently sent an email asking “WHY” haven’t you responded to my email.

I had the Rinnai V65e installed in my house 3 months ago. It has performed as expected the entire time. I love the idea of endless hot water. I also like the fact that I’m not keeping 40 gallons of water hot 24/7×365, so the potential energy savings are attractive.

There are, however, a few drawbacks that make a tankless water heater take some time to get used to. 1. Since the water doesn’t get hot until you need it, it takes a few seconds to get it hot. This means about an extra 5-8 second lag so the Rinnai can recognize that it’s being called in to use, turn on the gas, and begin heating water.

Since the pipes from the heater are not hot yet, they also take time to come to temp – giving you even more of a delay before getting hot water to your tap or shower. If your clothes washer is on the other side of your home from the Rinnai, trying to fill a load of towels with hot water can be frustrating, since the hot water may take 45 seconds to hit your washer.

It takes about 5 minutes of the water running before it gets hot. Water here in St. Augustine Florida is really expensive. Why am I wasting 5 minutes of water? Now I have to wash my dishes in cold water! Maintenance for the unit is also challenging.

We had to hire an authorized Rinnai dealer to flush the system. He will do this annually and it was really pricey. Having a normal water heater in the garage is a piece of cake. This Rinnai tankless water heater is more like old bread!.

I love the cost savings on my electric bill. While my water bill did go up a bit, it is no where near what the combined water and electric were before I switched to the Rinnai. I wish I could have had it installed in my garage rather than outside, as in winter it takes a good bit of time to get hot water.

Unfortunately, when I made the switch, roofer were in short supply, so I had to have it installed outside. Other than that, I love the unit.

I bought this unit rtex-27 about 2 week ago from home depot was highly recommended. Well got it installed and is working great. bad thing is now my LED light are like strobe lights ( whole house is LED lights) when someone opens the hot water.

Had the plumber come back and tryed figuring it out but has yet to fix it, now he want to start charging me for the time his taken to find the problem. He has called customers support but it sound like they dont have a clue.

Easier to install than removing the old tank unit. My wife was skeptical at first that this would be as good or better than our old unit with the idea of “unlimited” hot water and it didn’t disappoint.

We have a small house but both showers and washer can run all at the same time.

Chose this unit for our new home we were building. I liked the foot print size, endless hot water, and cost. I have had zero issues with the unit since it was installed and zero complaints from any guests about temperature.

The only downfall is the length of time to get hot water when the house is dormant. Definitely recommend a circulator pump at the farthest point just to keep the hot water closer to the tap. This was supposed to be done by the plumber during the build but was missed and unfortunately overlooked by myself due to external circumstances.

I replaced a 35 year old tankless water heater (Aquastar) after I could no longer get replacement parts for it. The prices for new units are very high, but my situation limits my water heating options so I didn’t have much choice.

My Rinnai RU160Pi has been in operation for a few weeks now. It seems to be working reliably. So far so good. I’ve made a couple of submissions to Rinnai’s on-line (e-mail) customer support and have heard NOTHING back from them after 10 days.

That is unacceptable. Below are my queries: 2019-03-25: I recently purchased a Rinnai RU 160Pi tankless hot water heater. I also purchased 2 Rinnai PCD07-SM Pipe Cover Enclosures. I was hoping to cover a large pipe space under my hot water heater using two (2) enclosures.

I need assistance figuring out how to mount the lower (2nd) pipe enclosure. I have successfully installed to first enclosure below the unit. It would seem that the pipe cover enclosure unit was not designed to do this.

As an on-demand system it takes forever for hot water to reach ends of the house with long runs of pipe which there’s not much you can do about, but the trigger mechanism for the system to start sometimes simply doesn’t.

I’ve had the install plumber out to look at it and turning the PRV all the way open helped, but it still occasionally decides it can’t tell there’s water flowing and it won’t engage the heater. Dumb.

The gas unit is also very loud and when it starts up you can hear it throughout the house. Which helps when you’re staring at the water coming out of the faucet wondering if it will ever heat up, but it’s a pretty lame feature.

I’m working to determine how to address the vibration noise it creates given there wasn’t much choice of where to install. My guidance would be NOT to install on any wood joists. It just turns your house into a resonant speaker for the unit vibration.

I was hoping for so much from this product. Yesterday I took such a hot shower during lunch and then that evening when I gave my daughter a bath, it only came out lukewarm. My shower today was borderline cold.

Tomorrow it may be hot again. I live in Northern VA and would not recommend this product. It ruins the experience of our new bathroom remodel. I had the Tempra 24 Plus installed in June of 2020 and it’s been great. I haven’t run out of hot water when my family are all taking showers around the same time or when the dishwasher or washing machine are also running hot water.

I love that I can simply adjust the temperature on it as well. I will say that I was renovating my garage and the electrician put in a new electrical panel so he also made sure it would handle everything in there.

Supply House was great to deal with and helped me figure out what size I needed as well.

Don’t buy it. it’s terrible,I bought the tempra24 plus from home depot, I installed all specified wires and circuits so it would work properly and efficiently but this this is horrible. my electric and water bill did go down even more than I had Anticipated but hate it.

No constant temperature what so ever. I’m getting it removed and getting one installed by a professional. the tempraplus was a waste of money.

We had 3 eighty gallon propane hot water heaters that were over 18 years old. Everyone said they were working on borrowed time. We decided to go with Rinnai and have been very pleased. We were able to go with just 2 units for our 11 bedrooms by using the system with the water storage tank.

We’ve been using the system for over 9 months and everyone has been very please. No one has every been short of hot water and there has been no delay in the water getting hot either. We also feel more secure with the Rinnai heaters than we did with an old hot water tank in the attic like we had before.

The Rinnai is very quiet. I really like that. I dont hear it like the water heater I had. Its small. Not this large ugly gas heater that takes space away. I save money. Does not run every time you use hot water like the old large water heater and you could hear the old style water heater heating the water every time you used hot water.

You have the choice of gas or electric. I have gas. Should have invested in this product years ago.

I like that it has more capacity for hot water. however i was told that it would take 30 sec or less to get hot water. its still closer to 2 min. urghh.

I had the same unit in a house I bought and it was at least 13 years old (used by snowbirds) when it died (stopped making hot water and leaking) so for the price this seems reasonable service. I bough the same unit to simplify re-installation.

My major issue is that if you open the unit, which will break the seals, it voids the warranty. The unit I had was installed correctly where the power wires should be connected directly into the unit (evidently voiding the warranty).

The new ones come with a pigtail wire. You need to anchor a junction box nearby and use big wire nuts to splice in the pigtail. For a new installation I would suspect that the electrical inspector would say you can’t do this and need to connect the feed wire directly to the unit.

Also, the install directions for this unit say that you are supposed to use 6 gauge wire, and the pigtail is 8 gauge. Does this make sense? One good feature is that the old unit had no clearance to put a wrench on the unit fitting when tightening the compression nut.

Without a wrench on the unit you could damage the fittings on the unit when cranking on the compression nut. Evidently they figured this out and the new units have more space to attach a wrench that holds the unit plumbing in place when tightening the compression nut.

It seems like a good unit, especially for the price but the wiring requirements makes no sense.

Purchased this model 11 years ago for 179. 00. I used it in my business to service 3 bathrooms and one shower. Worked flawlessly. we sold the building and had to leave it behind. Now I just built another building and the titan was first on my list.

This new model services 2 bathrooms and a washing machine. I have 4 girls working at the location and they use it all the time. People are amaized at the size of the unit. I have 12″ of copper pipe right off the heater then I switch to pex via a shark bite coupling.

My old unit worked on a 50 amp breaker but this new one likes a 60amp breaker better. I have it in the equipment room next to the breaker panel and use #8 wire to a dryer plug. I have a dryer piggy tail on the unit itself.

I dont run the hot water faucet wide open. If I do, the temperature is warm to hot. If I restric the water flow slightly, I can have boiling water out of the unit. The slower the water travels, the hotter it gets.

Bought this to replace another brand of tankless water heater (that you can buy at a big box store) at my Dad’s house which only lasted about 4 years which was a big disappointment. Titan is the best there is for your money.

I just recently purchased an ECOH200DVLN-2 as an emergency replacement for a nine year old RTGH-95DVN which just recently just stopped working. I can not say anything but that my previous water heater really out performed my expectations.

During my first year my hot water bill dropped from $120. 00 per month for a tank heater to $50. 00 per month when I converted to tankless, that’s $70. 00 in savings. I just hope that this unit will last much longer then 9yrs 4months.

It was a direct replacement for a unit I installed 12 years ago. Works perfectly. I am pleased with the Rheem units. Counting myself and my three daughter’s homes, we have four units I have installed, and all have been very satisfactory.

I can totally see tanked water heaters being a thing of the past. This unit is especially nice because it is easy to install and the vent plumbing uses 3 inch PVC making it a affordable install. The old units you could spend as much on the 1 piece vent as you would the actual water heater.

The extremely high efficiency makes it so you are getting your money’s worth. It does require to be flushed yearly if you want it to last for years. Having it is pure luxury with pure money savings. Win Win.

Endless showers, and being able to fill your tub up without running out of hot water is something that will make you hate to leave this unit behind if you move. I highly recommend getting one.

What does this mean when this product fails to make hot water? You call a plumber and an electrician to remove the complete unit from your wall, or you do it yourself if you are handy. Box it up, and mail it off to be fixed.

Then the company mails it back after they fix it. Then you get to call the plumber and electrician back to reinstall it. Don’t forget to let your family know there will be no hot water during this unknown time frame.

My Heater would’t make over 110 degree water after the installation so I was informed to mail it back to get fixed. I chose to mail it back one way. When they allow on site repair, if they ever do, I would try them again some day.

200 amp service. This thing pulling 66 amps. Heat pump pulling 90 amps. If wife cooks, cleans and drys cloths, I think it wont work. Lights dim now with heat pump on and water heater on. Just my thoughts.

So now I have it sitting on a shelf collecting dust. But I really cant blame titan. I should have done more than an hour of home work before ordering.

I have had this model installed for about 6 months now and I have to say that I hate it and wish I had never installed it. My main complaint about it is how LOUD it is. Every time you use it there is a loud metallic clanking sound when it comes on and when it goes off.

It drives me crazy. The unit is installed in the laundry room and I can hear the clanking from my game room 20 feet away down a hallway. It’s terribly annoying. Also, while the unit is heating water there is a whirring sound.

This whirring/vibration can also be heard in other rooms – especially the room with which it shares a common wall (it’s VERY loud in that room). The whirring/vibration also travels up the studs that the unit is mounted on and into the room above – which just happens to be our bedroom.

So, between all of these sounds, you can ALWAYS tell when someone is using the hot water. This noise is bad enough, in my opinion, that I was willing to tear the whole thing out, eat the cost and put in a tank model.

My wife was not a fan of that idea – so we are keeping it. Additionally, there is a noticible delay in the water heating up at the tap vs our old tank heater. This was expected – based on reviews that I had read prior to purchasing – but is much more noticable than expected (i.

e. it takes longer than I thought – especially for long runs). I would suggest you try one of these tankless systems out a someone’s house before buying so that you know exactly what you are getting yourself into.

I decided to go with the model 95 since I have four bathrooms in my house. Only two might be used at one time and washing clothes, so I will have enough hot water supply for three continous uses. Its a bit pricy, but worth the investment.

I had this tankless water heater for two months now. Its performed up to my expectations. Flow is great. I especially like the temperature control. You can mount the LED temperature control panel anywhere (and add more wire if you want to remotely install it), press the up and down buttons to change the water temperature on the fly.

The water does take about 20 more seconds or so to get hot water at your tap, but its worth the wait when you are taking long showers or washing cloths at the same time and never run out of hot water! There is a water save feature that you can set so that the flow is reduced and then increased once hot water is achieved.

Nice for water conservation areas or if you want to save on your water bill. I would not go with any other product after using this Rheem unit. The quality of manufacturing the unit is second to none.

Installation was not that bad at all. If you are going to do it yourself, make sure you read the instructions and take your time. It took me and another plumber about 6 hours to install from start to finish.

Thats removing the old tank hot water heater and making the necessary plumbing changes of copper pipe. I would highly recommend getting the cut off valves with the hose draining capability. This will save you alot of time when you have to drain either/both the HOT and COLD lines of the unit for maintenance.

You just hook up a hose to the valves, turn off the main supply and open the valve to let the water run out to a suitable drain. The name of the part is: Rheem RTG20220AB Webstone Tankless Water Heater Service Valve Kit, Clean Brass.

It worked great when initially put in. Living int he colder winter climate have had troubles with it freezing up. Then it started leaking. I will say the the Rheem support team did a great job of helping and warranting the product My concern is will it happen every time it gets cold.

The inlet water temperature is 48 degrees so I don’t understand why it is freezing up. Also they never said who has to pay for reinstallation me or them? Hope its not me!.

I bought my Rheem tankless to replace a 40 gallon hot water Rheem. I bought it online for around $850 it was $1300 to $1400 at the retail store. I spent around $300-$350 on parts thats including the watts service valves.

With my plumbing background I installed the unit myself it was very easy. But that being said unless you have some sort of knowledge on how to install one of these dont attempt to do it yourself. I turned the unit on it works great from the start with no additional adjustments needed.

However I did adjust the temp from 120 to 125 it does drop a couple degrees by the time it hits your Water faucet.

I purchased this natural gas model that was high efficiency because I did not want to have to deal with the really expensive stainless steel double insulated tubing for standard deficiency. This made the install painless and very cheap.

The only assistance I needed for installing this what’s 2 make sure I could lighten things up level well putting this on the wall. The unit can be lifted buy an average-sized adult but if you have an extra person that makes things easier.

Everyone stated that you would have to wait for hot water longer but I have noticed in my case of a large 2nd Story House that’s a hot water seems faster than my tank system. It is also endless hot water.

The biggest advantage chew going to a tankless unit was that now when no one has used hot water in my house for 14 for 16 hours I can go right to the tap and take a hot shower with no issues this is a huge upgrade from my old tank which would have barely lukewarm water and I would almost be taking cold showers.

Well the best thing is that I’m able to get rid of my disgusting old aging tank water heater that was causing noticeable sediment and rust in my water (despite draining repeatedly). This went in pretty easily, did the install in a day with only two trips to the hardware store 🙂 It took a good deal of research for me to prepare for this as I’ve never done a water heater install before, but I watched some videos and read the manual and it was overall pretty straight forward.

It took longer than I expected and it was challenging but I got it done in a day, including drilling a massive hole through my concrete basement foundation wall. I don’t notice any difference at all in having to ‘wait’ for hot water.

It takes less space and works with my existing 1/2″ gas line. One thing I notice is that because this uses 3/4″ hot and cold water connections and my old hot water heater used 1″ pipe and connections, there has been a slight drop in water pressure for just the hot.

Not a fault with the product and really its not a problem but something i didn’t originally anticipate. Overall, I’m super happy with this purchase and if you’re debating whether or not to get one, I would go for it.

I also looked at the less efficient models but due to the fact that the venting conduit is so expensive, the more efficient model ended up being a better option for me. I still have to run the drain line and route the electric cord cleanly but its been working great for the past couple of weeks.

My water is clean, hot and even smells better!.
