20 Best Tankless Hot Water Heater For Rv (2023 Updated)

You cannot add cold water to the hot water in the newest system. If you try to add cold water to adjust temp it will beep loudly and give you the E3 error code. Manufacturer says temperature must be set in advance and only hot water used.

This is not a good system as everyone does not want the same temp shower and shower temp is not hot enough for dishes. Yes you can change the temperature at the control before someone gets in the shower but if you forget to change it back the next person may be too hot when they are already in the shower and they cannot add any cold water.

Lousy system. Also you have to let the water run for it to get warm and that is filling up the holding tank.

You’ve probably seen videos of an installation being quick and easy so I want to describe my experience-After removing the old 6 gallon tank type water heater the hole was quite a bit larger than the new unit required.

No surprises here and filling in the gaps with wood was relatively easy. Then came the depth issue- the old one was recessed into the side of our motor home about 1/2″ for a flush fit so I made an adaptor/spacer ring out of 1/2″ plywood.

Next I found that the factory door kit was a bit too small to cover this newly filled area. I made a trim ring out of white “Formica” type laminate and attached it to the skin of the motor home with clear silicone caulk.

Compared to making and installing these parts the gas, water, and electrical connections were a breeze. Bottom line here is that you might be taking on more of a project than expected so plan accordingly.

If they become available factory trim rings and oversize doors would save a lot of work. (hint to manufacturer)After using the unit for several months I have a few observations- It will put out a lot of hot water and works best with a constant high rate of flow.

This could be a drawback if you are depending on a limited water supply. While running water at low flow the heater either doesn’t kick on or it will cycle hot to cold. During these cycles the water heater sometimes gave off a propane oder so I tried it with the cover open.

This eliminated the smell so I cut some additional venting slots in the metal door. Oder gone. (another hint to manufacturer)Also be sure your partner is able to change propane tanks. They inevitably run out in the middle of your shower.

Overall we are pleased to have unlimited warm water and it is a huge improvement over the old 6 gallon tank type unit.

WARNING! DO NOT BUY GIRARD. Have yet to actually use mines even once. Company blamed me! In addition, NOONE, ANYWHERE has the water flow sensor in stock!!! Everytime time i call back to these different distributors i get the samecresponse of we’ll PROBABLY have them in next week.

Its been at least a month now!! Other in stock part, the water line, has been paid for but never shipped!!! Thank God im not on the road!! Heed my warning!.

Had to replace our old water heater in the RV. Found it here and went ahead and purchased it. Make sure you measure everything carefully including the depth. Ours was a little tight but we managed to install.

Had to redo the plumbing me and the electrical for it. Endless hot water for everyone. Usually have three or more people enjoying the outdoors and to be able not to worry about running out of hot water.

Unaware I had defective 12 gallon with a pin hole which eventually got worse when I purchased my Cameo new. It eventually was discovered and I bought the Surburban Tankless. This is an excellent water heater.

It will be 2 years old May2022. Finally I purchased a very useful appliance.

For the money not what I expected. There is a minimum water amount like most on demand water heaters but this one also can get to much water and it wont heat the water. Also super finicky on how much hot water you have to adjust for.

Install was easy was really surprised there have installed some that take awhile.

I owned one of these before this one it has a 5 year warranty it lasted 7. 5 years. This product is designed to be used for camping. However I have used it in my home for over 7 years and it worked great.

I bought another brand and it failed within a year. I highly recommend this water heater. Buy one you won’t be disappointed.

I was afraid of purchasing this item. Really didnt expect it to work well. slow to heat, low to no water output. boy was I wrong! Have a mountain cabin that I bought this for. initial water temp is probably 60-65 degrees in September.

Hooked this unit to a water hose and a 20lb tank of propane with the supplied connectors and turned it on. The first strike, after turning on the shower head of the unit, took roughly 4 seconds as the hose and unit filled with gas and voila! HOT WATER! Even on the lowest heat setting and highest flow rate the water was warmed to a comfortable level for late summer showers.

At night, when cooler, I barley turned up the gas to produce a nice hot shower. The shower head itself is a little on the cheap side, and the sliding on/off switch is a little hard to move, but all in all a wonderful purchase that I wish I had made sooner.

I got my moneys worth in one long weekend of showering 3 times a day, with all my family and friends doing the same at our cabin.

Look at the gas, and water hookups on the cheaper ones. many are not US standard threads. This unit came with 1/2″ Male Iron Pipe (MIP) threads, with an adapter to 3/8″ flared SAE gas on the propane side.

The shower head is 1/2″ FIP, fits perfectly on the output water side and works like a charm. It even has a garden hose adapter! (1/2″ FIP to Female USA garden hose) They say not to hang it by the handle for a shower.

(What!) Very nice that it comes with it’s own propane regulator and STANDARD nose. (I hate it when you get stuff you have to buy adapters. ) Great unit. super pumped. it fits in the sheet metal window on the double door of my 1996 dodge van.

VERY complete. Hooks up directly to a 5 gallon propane bottle with the 1″ ACME (newer standard) thread. Here’s why only 4 stars – I can’t give 4. 5 – please read below SUPER PICKY COMMENTS It would be nice if they made the handle to take hanging AND would fold flat into the back of the body, so you could keep the handle and mount it on the wall.

The bottom bracket it mounted upside down. You can’t mount two screws and slide the unit over the two screws. One screw needs to be removed to remove the unit. They do have an alternate mount that looks like you could slide it over 3/8 pins, but you’d need to make orbuy the mount.

Hope this helps. This is a good, maybe even great, portable on demand water heater.

Although the water tempurature in the summer was too hot for a comfortable shower, the rest of the year I was mostly happy with this water heater. Installed in April 2021 with no problem, in June 2022 it stopped igniting.

I replaced the D batteries and it worked once then stopped again. I removed the batteries and reinstalled them. Now, it ignites as soon as you close the door to connect the batteries with No Water Running! Turning on the water and running for just 10 seconds, the faucet gets too hot to touch and the heat around the heater is substantial, I would say dangerously hot! And to turn it off, I have to disconnect the batteries.

After reading other peoples experiences, this company is obviously not taking these complaints seriously.

Works great for a small water heater. An easy improvement would be if the water inlet and outlet came from the factory with male hose fittings installed, so it could be plumbed in with washing machine hoses.

Less worry about crushing the delicate inlet and outlet.

My friend bragged to me about his new iw60 water heater in his travel trailer ans I trusted his judgement and my own further reading. I went ahead and purchased the unit along with the correct depth vent and controller and easily installed it.

I have endless hot water in my bus to RV conversion now. I would think the tank version are outdated by this.

The dhwh worked perfectly. I’ve been using it for a week straight and have no complaints. Other than you need to widen the hole in the side if your trl is a very easy install. I didn’t do it myself i had it done for that just in case thought.

Overall the water heater is great. I would recommend it to all. As a matter of fact the place that installed it for is doing just that. They loved it and the hot water output they said was the best they have ever seen for an rv.

I’m a repeat customer, and this unit is well worth it’s price. I bought my first heater in 2010 for outdoor use at my camper. The unit has been outdoors continually since first installed and winterized along with my camper every year.

Two years ago i needed to buy a replacement Battery holder because Mice had chewed on it over the winter. I’m replacing the first unit with the new one because i had someone winterize my camper last season, and they forgot to blow out the old heater, and it froze.

I’m SURE if it was Winterized i’d be using it again this season. I certainly got my moneys worth from the old one!.

the water out put of water pressure is very low. I seem to not be able to get temperature adjusted I keep trying. the water is to a small cabin. it is much to hot in sink but just barley warn in shower.

We live off the grid in rural Wisconsin. We use are sauna a lot, but sometimes you just want a hot shower. We hooked this up to our rain collection tank with a shallow well pump and pressure tank, and it’s great.

Got this for my wife to have some hot water for horse bathing down at the barn. It works great, the water has to be flowing for the heating to work. It’s not like a house hot water heater where the water is heated and stored.

The only issue I had was when trying to make the connections to my garden hose. The connector labeled GHT ( Garden Hose Thread) would not thread to a garden hose. A trip downtown confirmed that the connector, even though labeled GHT, was actually Pipe Thread.

I bought a true GHT connector and everything fit perfectly. Imagine how disappointed I would have been if I brought this camping before testing the connections.

Wonderful water heater ! Works great . Water heats up almost instantly. I use it to bath my dogs & to shower when we are camping .

Works but unreliable. Needs a constant water pressure to function adequately. Low water pressure results in shutdown. In a campsite with water source just elevated above the heater is not sufficient to provide the water pressure needed to activate the burner.

Works with garden hose fine but not camping friendly as the name appears to suggest.

Pros: This is probably a good outdoor shower propane water heater if used for that purpose. Cons: I bought this propane water heater to replace an existing water heater that supplied hot water to 2 bathrooms in my home.

The ad says that “You can get instant endless hot water easily wherever you are. ” However, there is a 20 minute timer that shuts off the hot water automatically after 20 minutes to avoid overheating, so not really endless hot water.

If you are in the UK, you probably won’t need to purchase the rather expensive pipe adapters to convert the three 1/2″ BSP connections to 1/2″ NPT for connecting the propane and the water supplies if you decide to use this for a permanent house supply instant hot water heater as I did here in Florida.

The unit comes with one brass adapter, but because I did not use the included shower head and portable LP tank connections that were supplied with the unit (because I was replacing my old instant hot water heater) so I had to purchase 2 additional BSP to NPT connectors.

If you are replacing a unit with this one and adapting it to your existing piping, the cold water inlet is on the right, the hot water outlet is in the center and the LP supply is on the left for this unit.

My previous pipe installation was different and I had to reconfigure the piping as needed. My unit was “reconditioned” which made the purchase price attractive. However, when I inspected the unit before installation, two spot welded supports for the venting at the top of the unit were broken off and I had to pop rivet the heat exhaust vent to the back of the unit to give it some support.

It appeared that the unit had been stressed by dropping it as the top of the exhaust vent had a dent. Probably someone lost their grip while handling it out of the box. Reconditioning the unit amounted to putting it back into the box and shipping it out again.

Addendum: My reconditioned hot water heater was delivered with a broken control valve making the unit inoperable.

I dont often review stuff I know I should as I rely on others opinions on things. I bought this for our campervan when we are free camping. I read the reviews, took a punt on it and was pleasantly surprised.

It really is a good piece of kit. I’ve fitted quick release couplings for the water and gas so I get it out, hang it on the back door, couple the water and gas and off we go. I’m really pleased with the flow rate and how warm the water is, after all it is 10kw rated.

Obviously we wont be using it all the time, if we are on a campsite etc, but even my wife thinks it’s good and that must be a good seal of approval. It came next day too I was really impressed. Buy one you wont be disappointed.

Le chauffe eau fonctionne trs bien et est trs efficace. La temprature de l’eau se rgle facilement (de 5 6 min. ) en suivant les instructions simples fournies. L’eau est suffisamment chaude pour prendre une douche confortablement.

Je pourrais facilement rgler le chauffe eau au maximum mais c’est amplement suffisant pour le moment. Je recommande fortement ce chauffe eau instantan.

Très satisfait. Fonctionne vraiment très bien. Je ne m’en passerais plus.

I purchased this water heater used. We liked it so much I built an outdoor shower so we could use it at home even when we weren’t camping. Works great either with a hose spigot or with the pump that conveniently attaches to our truck battery.

Hot water is instant and very hot, but can be tempered to your liking. We average about an hour per pound of propane. It’s a wonderful unit, at a great value. Switch out the shower head when you get a chance though.

It has allowed us to camp longer.

I purchased this to place on my back porch for my disabled best friend to shower since he cannot get into the shower. With this he can sit on a chair and shower. It works great except for the shower wand.

the on and off button is so hard to cut on and off that I have to leave it on the whole time he is not using it. I called your company and they referred me to the company that manufactured it. I got no result.

It still has to be on full time because I can’t even cut it off without spraying water everywhere. Unfortunate.

It’s ok. It’s small, simple to setup, and concept is great. The temperature is a bit temperamental. Sometimes the water will stay hot, sometimes it will only stay hot for 5 seconds and then get cold again despite the unit ‘being fired’.

The reality is camping you only run the shower in short bursts as you don’t have lots of water. And if it only stays hot half of those bursts, it’s not really dependable.

i had it professionally installed and its keeps popping a fuse and stops working all the time. i think it finally completely failed after 1 years of use only and 900 later. i home RHEEM will send me replacement as its under warranty.

but seems liek its one of the worse ones to have. all bad ratings. i would like to upgrade to a better one.

Had this unit professionally installed above my guest house. Bought it at Home Depot on 1-15-2020. The guest house has ONE (1) shower and ONE (1) bathroom sink. That’s it. It was replacing an old 30gal electric from the early 80’s.

This unit WILL NOT heat tap water to shower temperature. The dial on the water heater is set to 140. With the shower turned to hot ONLY, the water was tepid. Lukewarm. If I test it in the sink, same thing, lukewarm at hot only (fully on).

If I turn the sink to a very slow flow, I get hot water. This will NEVER heat enough water for a shower. After my contractor called Rheem and fully troubleshot the unit, Rheem basically shrugged and said, “They need to buy a bigger unit.

“. Bear in mind, I live in San Bernardino County, along the 210 corridor (not in the mountains). This unit is rated for 2. 14 GPM and it does NOT achieve that. Not even close.

I installed this unit in my 2/1 1960’s condo replacing a 30gal water heater. What a great product! The install was easy i had to upgrade my breaker to a 60 from a 30 which meant upgrading the wiring gauge, which wasn’t hard at all.

I have hot water on demand now that never runs out! my 30 gal tank would only provide about a 5 min shower now its as long as i want. I have to fill my tub with free flow hot water at only half flow but to keep hot water but i figured as much from such a small unit.

overall it was very much worth it to ditch the hot water storage tank and have hot water on demand for as along as in need it. If i were to try to heat a larger house with 2 or 3 baths I would suggest a larger unit but the product is GREAT!!.

Love our heater so far. We had it all winter and I forgot to write a review but it came up on my feed so i figured I would let everyone know how much we used this heater. This past winter we went camping at least twice a month and it was used the whole weekend not only to wash the dog but all our equipment as well.

We also took showers each day. It is amazing having hot water at our campsite since the park only provides a water spiket but nothing more!.

Initially purchased Ecosmart 18 from Home Depot. Had it installed and it wouldn’t work. Called them and did tests myself needed a new control board. Once I replaced it worked fine. Needed another unit for house didn’t want Ecosmart so bought Rheem 27 kw unit.

Had it installed. Didn’t work so called tech support and they have you go through hoops testing unit which I did. Called at least 9 times each time getting different tech person, each giving me instructions on how to test unit.

They replaced Control board still no hot water. Further tests. Now they want to replace some wires to the heating elements. Haven’t had hot water for 3 weeks because of bad unit and slow replacement of their parts.

WARNING! Do not buy this unit unless you have plenty of time on your hands, don’t need hot water in winter, have electrical skills, and/or are willing to to read the manual and learn to do your own unit.

3 weeks without hot water and still waiting for parts. Oh, their defective units will not be replaced except 1 piece at a time. Hope this helps.

Water heater works great and i was very happy with it until it stopped getting hot. Only 2 years old and had to replace a bad hearing element( it has 3) other two were in great shapeTurned the power back on to test and smoked a part the internet and parts list said was a thermostat( little round thing positioned in the center of each heating chamber)Called three plumbing companys, four supply houses, two of which were rheem dealers, nobody has spare parts and nobody can even figure out what the part is much less get me a replacement.

Rheem website has a parts section and when i drill down it says no matches. This has been going on for a solid week now and i happen to to be in another state for work and the same thing here. Dont carry spare parte for electric tankless, dont know what that is, so on and so forth.

One supply house said that they quit carrying these and the spare parts because they had reliability issues. Do what?? Following that logic the ford house should stop stocking oil filters and wind shield wipers.

I would give this a 5 star review but I have a problem with tub spout water temperature. Overall I really like this unit. The water temp on all the faucets in the house is great, except for the tub spout.

The shower is a nice 125F but the tub spout is only around 99F. The specs say a max of 4 GPM, but for my area the max is only 1. 7. GPM based on winter water temp (this is how the Rheem support person said they rate these).

This Information is not provided in anywhere in their documentation and you need to call them to see what they rate your winter water temp in your area. The max flow of the water heater is 4 GPM, but the tub spout is 5 GPM.

From all the research I have done, no plumbing manufacturers limit the flow on tub spouts. So with the smaller water heater, you will not get enough hot water from the tub spout to fill the tub at the same temp as the shower head.

I would not have bought this unit if I knew this in advance. My options at this point are: 1) live with it, 2) upgrade my new water heater (check the wiring/breaker requirements), 3) change the newly installed single handle shower valve to one that adjusts water volume and temperature separately and risk that the lower gpm out of the spout can fill the tub at a speed fast enough before the water in the tub gets cold.

Be aware of this if you buy the small unit.

1. You will have to pay more money for hardware, the hardware provided is not sufficient for installation. 2. They don’t tell you about the maintenance you will need to perform on it. usually about once a year maybe more, depending on the useage and it’s not something people want to deal with or even remember to do, thus shortening the life span of the tankless water heater.

A You Tube video shows that you have to disconnect the lines and run vinegar thru the lines to clean them out, looks like a mess and a pain, plus you will need to install service disconnect valves in order to do this, as well.

3. A lot of hype on saving electricity, debateable. do your research!! 4. The water doesn’t get as hot in the tankless as does a water tank heater. 5. It will take a little longer to warm up the further away your sinks are from it, for instance in the kitchen.

takes longer to heat, so it’s not necessarily on demand heat. 6. This is a big one. TAKES AWAY ALOT OF THE PRESSURE IN THE HOT WATER. I had to switch back to tank because it would take about 15 to 20 min to fill tub w water to take a bath.

7. THE WATER ALSO CHANGED, it was harsher, it dried my eyeballs, head, sensitive areas, skin and felt very raw. ALSO the clothes came out with a starchy effect and had lost their color, as well. 8. The WINTER/SUMMER switch was pointless, had to have it on winter the whole time, even in summer just to get hot water.

9. The WATER PRESSURE SWITCH, the higher the pressure, the less hot water or even NO hot water came from it. 10. Last, but not least. the pamphlet booklet doesn’t tell you a whole lot about the product!!!.

Overall, I am happy with this purchase. Bottom line, you get what you pay for. I have a 312 square foot guest house that I put this in. Here are the pros and cons: Cons: 1 – It’s very finicky 2 – Water pressure will sporadically go through a pulsing/bouncing spat 3 – Even though I have it mounted on a cinder block wall with nothing obstructing it, the flame suffocates.

Though I’m sure Marey would have a cow about this, I had to remove the screws so I could open the housing about 1/2 inch in order to get enough oxygen flow to keep it burning. 4 – Only one fitting (I don’t remember if it is the gas or water side) is secured to the body.

The unsecured side requires that you hold it still with a second wrench in order to tighten it. Why not just secure both sides? It can’t be that expensive. 5 – The water temp will randomly drop for an unknown period of time, even though I’m the only one in the house and there is no change in the water pressure.

Mystery. 6 – Even at the maximum flow, the hot water pressure is pretty low at 2 gpm. It makes for a fine shower as long as you’re not hung up on getting a strong stream from your shower. It still manages to provide a fairly steady, straight stream once mixed with the extra pressure from the cold water side.

If pressure is important to you, I suggest spending a little extra for a model with a higher GPM rate. Pros: 1 – This is an excellent value for the price. Where a typical tankless heater will run about $800+ (averaging about $1,000-$2,000 from what I’ve seen), I was able to buy this Marey tankless heater, AND all the supplies/materials to complete the installation for about $250 total (using Pex and double-walled vent pipe through the cinder block wall — through-the-wall thimbles are required for normal walls, but cost more).

That’s about the price of the 20 gallon ELECTRIC water heater that I originally put in the house. Great value! 2 – It uses very little fuel. I typically take 2, 20-minute showers daily and I stay in the house about 3 days out of the week.

It is hooked up to a 20 lbs. propane tank which lasts about a month or longer. 3 – My girlfriend loves taking bubble baths. Even though it takes about 15-20 minutes to fill the tub, it does a great job.

The water was very warm (she had to dump cold water back in to cool it off!) and you never have to worry about running out! 4 – Easy installation. If you can hook up the propane to your barbecue and tighten a hose on a water spigot, you can install one of these yourself.

If you have any questions, I’m sure you can call Marey or the employees in the plumbing department at your local hardware store. 5 – Heats up water FAST. The time for it to travel from the heater is going to be directly proportional to the distance between the heater and the point source, but the water really is seemingly instant right out of this heater.

Be patient when getting the temperature you are comfortable with. Follow the directions. Insulate water lines to the unit helps. Don’t use a water shut off at the head or you’ll get cold water for a bit.

Mine is in mobile home with outside access. Insulated with foam board included door. Be sure to provide ventilation.

Heater is worth every penny. Elevation is an issue with these. I’m at about 1800 feet and have zero issues.

But let me start at the beginning. I ordered a tankless water heater around the first of June, by about the 28th I call customer service to find out what is going on. She tells me that she sent an email to the manufacturer and it will be 2-3 days before I know what is going on.

I was without hot water, so I was not a happy camper. So I called Mr. Marcus’ office to get a better answer, and that’s where the story gets great, the lady I spoke with was wonderful, she called the manufacturer to find out the water heater I had ordered was on backorder until the middle of July.

I was mad cause I had not been notified of this. But she helped me pick another one that was comparable and actually cheaper. I am so happy. It’s great. Now I’m a happy camper.
