20 Best Sleeping Mattress For Camping (2023 Updated)

Amazing! The most comfy night’s sleep I could imagine on all different surfaces. I’ve used on gravel campsites, the back of my SUV, and on the floor at mom’s house and no matter what surface it’s on, I sleep like a baby.

It’s sincerely the best pad I’ve ever used. Beats the heck out of an air mattress. It’s definitely bulky, but if you’re car camping and want to sleep well, you won’t regret it.

I’ve had inflatable mattresses for years, and this simply blows them out of the park (no pun intended). There is no worry that this will deflate or pop on the ground, the bottom material is water-resistant so I can feel good about putting it even on wet grass when sleeping out under the stars, and the little mat to stand on and stretch in the morning is a nice touch.

The foam is as comfortable as my bed at home, really plush! Not sure how this can be beat at a campground!.

It works as expected. Hard to wrap wire round HT lead and secure, also to view gauge with engine running. I need to build a mounting platform to secure the gauge and angle for vision. Battery was showing only one bar indicated, so expect to have to replace very soon.

If you are a sidesleeper get this! I have tried numerous mats and this is the only one that I can use that I don’t wake up with back pain. Its a bit more weight but totally worth it! A goodnight sleep is everything on trail.

These are great for added warmth, I use them underneath an inflatable pad to increase the seasonal R value, and to prevent damage to my inflatable pad. I found this to be a much better solution than my thermarest xtherm as when it is really hot in the summer, I don’t want my body heat reflecting back to me, but early spring and late fall, I really appreciate the added warmth.

This also ends up being less expensive than an xtherm and I don’t have to worry about having zero insulation under me should my sleeping pad get punctured in the field. These seem to hold up better than the big box store knock offs.

I was so excited to start using this for my son when we travel, as it’s lightweight and easy to carry with its travel bag. He slept soundly on it, which says a lot, as he’s quite picky with his sleeping conditions.

It is a very narrow mattress, though, and he rolled off it onto the floor in middle of the night. I don’t think it can possibly fit an adult unless they don’t move while they sleep. Also, it took a really long time to fill up with air, more than 1/2 hour to get to capacity.

But it’s still a high quality product, one the looks like it will last for years!.

This Coleman self inflating camp pad is very lightweight and handy. We used it on our recent camping trip and it was very easy to use and took so much lesser room in car with other camping stuff. Quality of the pad looks great as all Coleman products.

Also it is easy to inflate or deflate. We also used it on our outdoor gathering, just to throw on grass for kids to sit or play. This is our new go to pad now in camping or outdoor gatherings.

This is definitely a must have for all my fellow camping enthusiasts! If you have ever slept on the cold hard ground when you camp then you will love this product. This sleeping pad is so comfortable it makes sleeping when you camp much more enjoyable.

It self inflates in minutes and is easy to put away when you are headed home. It can also be used at home when you have company or when you go hunting.

I got one of these pads as a bottom layer for my thermarest Neoair on snow, and this quickly became my go-to only pad for summer and shoulder season camping. It is a little bulky as some other reviews have mentioned, but I always have space to strap it to the outside of my pack.

Great as a summer pad but I have also slept on snow in 20F weather with this pad and a quilt before and been fine (was a little worried going into that but worked out great). I love the ease of getting to camp and not having to fuss with inflating a pad, or worrying about doing maintenance on the go.

Have scraped this bad boy up and not lost any sleep over it (literally). Sometimes my feet stick over the edge but I usually sleep with them on top of my backpack so not as big of an issue for me.

Very affordable pad, good R value, light. Ideal for car camping, could be used for backpacking (esp on a budget). Doesn’t fold down to a small size, so doesn’t lend itself well to backpacking. But should last a long time for car camping.

In summary, it does what it’s supposed to do quite well. So no qualms with the purchase.

Admittedly, I originally was going save up cash and buy an Exped, but I cam across this Stoic Double Cloud Camp Bed, and it was within my budget, so I took a chance, and purchased it. So far it seems to be a great deal at the sale price.

I took it out for a trial run, and here are my opinions and thoughts: The Good: PRICE! sale price was perfect for my budget Comfort: Felt great, I can see myself using this on the RV trailer beds, and for extended days tent camping Ease of Use: easy to inflate/deflate Lifetime Warranty: good to know the manufacturer backs the product.

Size: Large enough for two adults The Bad: Size/Weight: Larger/Heavier than expected Color: (VERY SUBJECTIVE and personal preference) Lack of Instructions: but I put some below, and it’s not complicated.

Overall: I really like this sleeping pad, for the sale price it definitely did not disappoint. Superficially, I wish it had an airbag to blow up and came in some “cooler colors. ” I think it is worth mentioning that this is fairly large, and you should consider the size, because even in the stuff sack and with car camping it can take up significant space in your kit.

*For the initial inflation, I was able to get it fully inflated in about 25 minutes, I turned the valves to the “neutral” position, and let it self inflate for 20 minutes, and then I turned the valves to the “inflate” position, this is the one with the nipple sticking out and I blew about 30 or so puffs to inflate to the firmness that I liked and then I screwed the grey caps back over the valves.

To deflate, I simply turned the valves to the “deflate” position, this is the smooth yellow side, folded the mattress in half horizontally and used my bodyweight to express the Air out, and then I unfolded it to fold it in half vertically and expressed the rest of the air out, and after that: rolled it up, put the velcro straps back on it, and put it in the stuff sack for storage it took about 10 minutes.

Bought this for car camping. It is huge and heavy and warm as expected and is made for luxury. Definitely more comfortable than an air mattress and any conventional sleeping pad, and probably more comfy than my king size bed too.

Plenty warm for tent camping during ski season. Adjustable bounce when inflating let’s you find the perfect comfort. Self inflates surprisingly quickly (after the 2nd or 3rd use) and takes only a few breaths to finish off (much less than an inflatable sleeping pad).

I haven’t had any leaking with the spinning valves, but they shouldn’t be hard to o ring seal if needed. My only complaint is that this mat is hard to pack up with one person despite the flipping valves.

Takes maybe 8 min of repeatedly rolling to get all the air out and closing and opening the valves to keep all the air from coming back in. But if you’re ok fighting it for a few minutes and have room to bring it with, can’t go wrong with this super comfy pad.

And it’s way more affordable than even a used exped mat, and pairs well w unfitted full size sheets so no sleeping bag needed.

No instructions, but price was right so took a shot. Both ports have an internal “coin flip” one way yellow valve. In tiny print, the side with a central nub pointing up is the INFLATE side. Spin that internal plug around on it’s axis (yes that white disc with yellow center spins inside the hole).

That’s the DEFLATE direction of the valve. INFLATION: Turn both 1 Way Valves sideways (no airflow restriction from INFLATE or DEFLATE) so you can see inside. Walk away a little while & let the memory foam inflate/decompress to do some of the work for you.

Close the yellow valve w/ the INFLATE side facing you. Side w/ the central little nipple pointing out. Two people can blow on the pair of one way valves. It self seals so air doesn’t rush out. If you’re one person, screw on the grey cap on one side and stand the mattress on one side so you can stand & inflate the other side.

Put a little Chapstick or Vaseline on the seal inside the grey caps to reduce leaks. DEFLATION: Unscrew BIOTH grey caps. Turn the disc/valves sideways where there is NO airflow restriction in or out.

Fold mat in half lengthwise (the crease from packing) with the logo side facing OUT. Lay on the mat facing the valves to force a bit of air out. Spin the discs/valves CLOSED so the word DEFLATE (solid yellow side) faces out.

Let bodyweight do the work slowly. Fold mat in half from the bottom (opposite end from valves). Lay on it & let air ease out the deflate valve. Unfold mat (still leave folded in half lengthwise) & fold 1/4 of mat(end opposite the valves) toward the top.

Sit on your knees or butt to force air out. Keep folding in 1/4 increments sitting/laying/kneeling to force all air out. Unfold the 1/4 folds( majority of air out) & leave folded in half lengthwise. Now roll it up from the end opposite the valve.

This will squeeze the remaining air out tooothpaste style. Without getting off, close the grey caps so the valves can’t leak any air back in as the foam tries to expand. Wrap the 2 velcro straps around & toss in the bag.

Done. Inflation “by a single pair of lungs” in under 5 minutes. Deflation about the same. Had to take my glasses off to see the words “Deflate & Inflate”. Found a 1 minute video from a guy showing that those internal valves “spin” around.

Again, INFLATE has a white frame w/ center orange nipple. DEFLATE has a solid orange disc side. Mat is SUPER comfortable. Wife is leary of being able to do it by herself, but showed her how & now she gets how to operate the valves.

Copy my text. Print it out. Toss it in the stuff sack. If you follow these instructions, it easily fits back in it’s carry bag. Promise.

It’s supposed to be a self-inflating mat, but even after hours with the valve in the inflate position, the mat was still looking like a pancake. I tried for 3 days. So. it doesn’t self-inflate. I decided to blow air by mouth, but I really, really hate to do this as it makes me want to barf.

The mat doesn’t just need a couple of blows, but way too many. The mat held air after I blew into it for a long time. After calling REI, a nice rep told me to try a pump. I had a pump for an air mattress and decided to try on the Sea to Summit.

The air hose didn’t fit 100% but was good enough. I filled the mat with air but here is the problem: when removing the hose, the air rushed out of the mat and that’s because the hose can only fit into the open hole, not the gridded orange plug.

I am disgusted with the so-called new fantastic technology. I used to have Therm-a-rest mats that would inflate 90% without blowing air into them. Blowing air meant touching up, not blowing until you get nauseated.

I got this for car camping, but car camping might take me at higher elevations sometimes and I hate to think how it feels when blowing my mouth for 5 solid minutes. This is nonsense and I think I will return it.

I now come to think that I don’t need a brand name for such a lousy product. I did see $30-40 self-inflating mats that are probably exactly the same. In that case I can accept the limitations. I wanted something functional, not lousy product that is called brand name.

I’m really frustrated by this experience.

Very well-insulated and pretty comfortable for a sleeping mat. I had zero sense of feeling cold from the ground through the mat. The self-inflating nature of the mat certainly reduces the work required to inflate it compared to a regular air mattress, but it will always require a couple of breaths to really get it up to pressure.

The valve makes it easy to quickly release a small amount of the air once you’re lying on it to get exactly the right pressure. I noticed someone else said it was hard to get into the bag, but that just means they didn’t roll it up properly.

If you reverse the valve and use your knees to squash air out as you roll, it’ll be much smaller than the bag and just drop in without any effort. You’ll even need to use the compression strings on the bag if you don’t want the bag to flop around on the mat.

This mat wouldn’t suit an ultra-light hiker, but my preference will always be towards carrying a bit more weight and having a good night’s sleep! I’ve used mine three times so far with not a hint of leaking.

After 20 years I decided to replace my old sleeping mat. My old mat was light and thin, self inflating, designed for bushwalking, but sadly my hip could was getting sore on the old mat as I’m a side sleeper and getting creaky!! I looked at a variety of other makes and slowly knock them out one by one.

I wanted one that was comfortable, had some but not to much depth and was compact when not used. One good brand I looked at needed a pump to top the air up, not much use when you’re ferreting around at night trying to put an extra air into the mat and more gear to haul around.

Another used a bag to top up air. In the end I went for this Sea to Summit mat. It was thicker than my old one but still could be squashed down for easy transport. As it was I needed a mat for two weeks as we were camping out so the mat got a good trying out.

This mat was just great. It was comfortable no pressure points on my hips and I slept well. The mat also did not leak air so no nocturnal topping up!!. It squashed down well for travelling or walking.

I’ve had this mat for years now and its pretty much good as new still. Its not luxurious, and i’m definitely thinking of investing in the ultim version now, but compared to an airbed or roll mat it is 1000% better, its super lightweight, easy to pack up and pack down and (with some effort) still fits in its original bag.

Its super easy to inflate and doesnt require a pump. If you want to sleep like you do at home then I suggest you spend some more money but for comfort on a budget this is great!.

Bought 4 of these and used on our camping trip last week. It was very easy to set up and put away. And having the zipper to connect btw sleeping pads is a plus. However, it is not comfortable enough for me and my husband.

We actually double up the sleeping pads to make it more comfortable, but we still end up with very bad back pains. It might work for kids/teenagers, but it didn’t really work well for us.

doesn’t self inflate much, but this didn’t come as a shock because I watched the instructional video before the purchase and knew I needed to blow air in myself. Great for the kids who don’t weigh much, however I’d suggest adults spend a bit more on luxury, if they are camping longer than a weekend.

Overall satisfied with build quality, price tag, and simplicity.

I love this mattress pad! I bought this for my camping trip in Zion National Park, it was extremely helpful since I stayed there for 4 nights. I’ve had one of those traditional air mattresses before and it just can’t compare to this QT QOMOTOP mattress pad.

The comfort is like sleeping in your own normal bed. It’s so easy to set up too, you just unroll it and untwist the valves and let it inflate itself. If it doesn’t inflate to the firmness that you like, you can also use the very handy sleeve carrier that the mattress pad comes in, it also serves as a pump for the mattress pad.

I only had to let it inflate one time during my time there, whereas air mattresses tent to leak air every time you use it therefor making it so you have to pump it every time. To roll the mattress back up again, open the valves and flip the valve to deflate.

You will then need to use some muscle and help the mattress pad release the air. Easies way for me was to get on top of the mattress and push the air out. Then fold it in half hot dog style yes it will still be very puffy and you will wonder if it will really roll back up.

Start rolling the mattress pad starting from the opposing side of the valves so as you roll you push the air out. When you roll to the end most of the air should be out by now. Then you can use the straps to strap it back together and put away in the carrying case.

Overall of everything I brought to my camping trip this was my favorite. I had a great night sleep every night and was refreshed every morning. The only thing is that this is definitely not backpacking friendly since it is heavy.

Not super heavy but too heavy to traverse with. Still it is 100% worth the money and I will forever recommend this to everyone unless they are backpacking.

I haven’t been camping in a few years, and I decided to give cots a try. It was so miserable that I sold them the second I got back and flipped to the other end of the spectrum with the purchase of a 300 Exped 15 mat from REI.

The Exped is nice for sure, but you know that feeling when you splurge on something and the first time you try it all your buyers remorse fades away? I didn’t have that feeling. Considering that it retails for the same price as a full on twin memory foam mattress I just wasn’t overly wow’d.

Before returning it I bought this mat so that I could compare what 300 and 100 felt like side-by-side. I placed them together and rolled from one to the other trying every position I could think of that I might sleep in.

Then my wife did the same, and my four-year-old rolled around on them to just for good measure. They were not only highly comparable, but my wife actually preferred this mat to the Exped pad even though it’s about an inch and a half to 2 inches thinner.

Only time will tell how long it holds up, but from what Ive seen so far I would recommend this pad without hesitation. One pro for the Exped over this mattress is that it has two separate and distinct inflate and deflate valves that would probably be more durable than the flip valve in this mat.

However, even if the flip valve breaks you still have the cover itself that will keep it closed and the mattress usable. And on the other hand the method of manual inflation on this pad is better. Exped gives you a small separate hand pump, but I found that using the carrying bag inflator on this mat took a lot less time and effort.

Overall very satisfied.

Ive been camping alot since quarantine and decided to get myself nicely equipped with fine camping gear. Im not a fan of inflatable beds simply because:1 you need some form of air blower like eletric or pump or blow it up yourself2 they make alot of noise in the night especially considering I toss and turn alot3 they tend to deflate after a night of usage4 not strong or comfortableThis product on the other hand.

you dont have to rely on an electric pump. Considering most camp sites dont have electrically units, you simply use the bag to inflate the bed and it works so well!! Literally like 3 times and its nicely inflated already.

The bed seems to have thick layers of foam or some form of padding that makes it even more comfortable but its super soft and supportive. The material feels very stury and reliable. It doesnt make alot of noise in the middle of the night also.

When youre deflating, all you have to do is turn the valve the other way and slowly roll the bed up and its done. Super easy and fast I love it. I bought the smaller one and I slept with no issues but Im going to return it soon for the bigger one.

The smaller one I measured and thought it would be bigger but it felt like a twin for me so I couldnt shuffle around as much as I do at night. The bed is also a good distance from the ground too so thats nice.

Highly recommend this bed, I was skeptical at first since its still a pretty new product but Im glad I got on it. All of my family and friends were highly impressed with it and kept asking about it and Ive redirected them here.

Took this out for a 2 night car camping trip to test this out where temperatures overnight ranged between 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. For reference, I’m normally a cold sleeper, with an R value 3. 5 sleeping pad not keeping me adequately warm in my hips at temperatures about 5 degrees.

I normally sleep on my back and don’t move around a lot when sleeping. This worked wonderfully during my trip and kept my hips (and the rest of my body) toasty warm. I did notice that the pad was slightly deflated in the morning when I woke up, but none of my pressure points were close to touching the ground.

I also found the light weight and small packed size very convenient. Some of the things I didn’t like about the pad include it’s narrow width (only 20 inches and Thermarest doesn’t have the option of a regular wide or large women’s pad), which can be uncomfortable unless you have a slender frame.

Although the pad is of high quality material and construction, I have concerns about the surface material of the mat puncturing due to sharp rocks on the ground, and would be careful to clear the sleeping area of rocks before setting up the mat.

Lastly, while this mat is decently comfortable, it is not the most comfortable mat out there, particularly for side sleepers I think. The horizontal baffles of the mat left me wishing for a bit more back support.

My most comfortable lightweight sleeping pad is the Sea to Summit Etherlight XT Women’s, which I would recommend over the Thermarest to those who prioritize comfort, although it is not as warm and weighs approximately 1.

5 times more than the Thermarest. Overall I would recommend this mat more to those who prioritize weight and warmth. If comfort is your priority, then you may wish to look elsewhere.

Bought and used 2018 & 2019 no problems, although like some other comments I did tend to slide off. Covid. Back out to use 2021, short 3 night trip as test of kit, all good. After a few nights on my two week trip waking up cold after a few hours with the mat deflated.

Search for leaks as I carry the repair kit, failed. Continued the trip wearing more clothes inside my sleeping bag than walking during the day as every night the mat deflated after a few hours. When I got home I tried finding the leak in the bath, no easy task to push the mat under water and hold it still to find a slow leak.

I failed to find any leak. Changed the valve. Tested the mat, still deflated after a few hours use. Binned the mat and purchsed a higher rated sleeping bag, Rab 400 to 600, and purchased a Thermorest ProLIte Apex Regular Self Inflating mat.

Now completed two trips, a week and two weeks with the new system. It worked well, in addition although the mat is the same size I stayed on it better. Unfortunately although present set up working well and every night i had a good nights sleep I am suffering a weight penalty so back on the market trying to save weight but with more reliable kit.

This is the thickest, most comfortable, warm self-inflating/foam sleeping pad Therm-a-Rest makes that can reasonably be backpacked with. I also believe the 4. 4 R rating is too conservative, and the pad is actually warmer.

In fact, I’ve slept on it a good 15 times now, including in weather into the 30s, and found it to resist cold from the ground, and air, quite well. The brushed surface is also helpful if you move a lot, and it does self-inflate on its own, once it has been used a few times, if you give it some time.

While some people have had a few issues, this pad seems very durable to me. I bought both the patch kit, and wing valve repair kit at the same time, and you may want to do the same if you feel the need to be safe.

If there is one knock I’d say it’s that this pad is not small. It’s on the big size, and while it’s not too heavy to backpack with, for some people it may simply be too large. It’s not as bulky as some closed foam pads, or the original Thermarest, but compared to something like the Pro Lite Apex, or any of the air pads like the Neoair, it’s noticeably larger.

If you’ve got the room, and need the comfort, or warmth, it may be worth it.

I bought one of these in 2020, looking to replace the cheap inflatable pad that most people have bought when they first started. This pad was everything I wanted. My girlfriend loved it so much, I bought one more just so I could drag her out for more trips! I toss and turn all night and never wake up my partner because there is no crinkly insulation like you find in many other pads.

I’m not an ultralight guy so the size and weight are well worth the quality of sleep I get. The downside to this pad is definitely the self-inflating concept. I have yet to see this pad inflate to even 50% of what I’d expect.

This isn’t a huge issue because it only takes a few breaths to blow it all the way up. Time will tell how this pad handles that type of moisture from breathing into it.

These pads were great for camping in CA mountains with temps below 30f. Only minor, to be expected issue was that they are slippery. so next time I now to bring some grip pads, but it would be great if these pads actually had no slip material on them too.

Decent quality and price. Compact enough for backpacking. Doesn’t offer much comfort but anybody with common sense could figure that out as it’s only a <0. 5 inch of foam. The main purpose of this is to be an insulation layer which is think it does very well we'll.

Weighs nothing, good insurance should I lose air in my sleeping pad, not to mention it boosting my R value. ..

You should offer a cover for the mattress. A simple cover that can be used to pull over the mattress.

After 4 years of not being able to camp because of having two babies, we were finally ready to get back out to the woods but I knew we needed to upgrade our sleeping set-up. I’m an obsessive researcher and literally looked at pretty much every camping sleep system out there before buying the HEST sleep system.

I’ve also used and owned a magnitude of Thermarest and other brands camping sleeping pads and they can’t even be compared to the HEST. It’s not often a person/company completely innovates an industry but that’s what they’ve truly done by developing this two-part sleep system.

I absolutely love camping but the one thing that I’ve dreaded over the years is tossing and turning all night then waking up exhausted the next morning with a sore lower back. The HEST sleep system solves that problem and provides true comfort that you would expect from sleeping in your own bed.

The dual-density foam mattress is incredibly soft and supportive and you could probably get away without even using the inflatable drop stitch base but the drop stitch is where the true genius comes in.

As we all know, the ground can be very uneven camping and having the incredibly thick, seemingly puncture-proof and water-proof base is the perfect foundation for the air mattress. The two combine like a traditional bed mattress and box spring to give you complete support while insulating you from the cold of the ground and any water that might get in your tent.

The other brilliant thing about this design is how solid the bed is. Cots and air mattresses can be a good sleeping option for camping but you forget how much they sway and move around as you adjust during the night.

This literally does not happen with the HEST as it’s absolutely rock solid and does not move at all. It’s AMAZING. I was also really impressed with the HEST bag, air pump and also how easily it packs away.

They definitely designed the entire system well and it’s very easy to deflate and put back in the bag once you know what you are doing. They have a great video to explain the process and I’d recommend watching that.

The system is fairly heavy but that’s because the drop stitch is made out of really thick, durable material and it almost seems bulletproof. The HEST is a little more expensive than other options but by the time you buy a cot + a foam pad or some other type of air mattress, you might as well just invest slightly money to get the best thing out there.

We bought it for camping but we’re already using at our house quite a bit as the kids love to lay on it to watch TV and we’ve also used it as a guest bed already and they were very happy with their night’s sleep.

I think there are a ton of other uses for this sleep system also as we’re planning on bringing it with us to hotels when we need a separate bed for the kids instead of them having to use rollaway beds.

I think they’d also be great for outdoor concerts, the beach, quick overnights in your car if you don’t want to get a hotel room, etc. Treat yourself to the best sleep set-up in the world. You won’t regret it for a second.
