18 Best Single Speed Conversion Kit (2023 Updated)

This product is great for converting to single speed. The many spacers are great for getting the perfect chainline. I have been riding it hard and it’s holding up. I’m having a great time on the single speed.

I ended up combining this kit with some spacers I had on hand from another kit to get the exact perfect chain line, but it would have been OK if this kit was all I had.

So far its been real solid. My son hasnt had any issues with it. Hes very happy with it. Good product.

This kit is visually appealing and a good deal, but it’s not quite there. The spacers in any configuration puzzlingly do not provide a proper straight chainline for modern bikes. Set up with a 1x XT M8000 crank/chainring, the chainline is about 5mm too inboard to be perfectly straight.

To add insult to injury, the included cogs are kind of cheesy, and are too thin for use on aluminum freehub bodies, they gouge the material way too easily. However, if you use a Surly SS cog with this kit in the dished outboard position, you will get a proper straight chainline.

Also, you won’t eat up your alloy freehub body. The advantage of the tall spacers is they add extra support to the cog and are more aesthetically pleasing than regular spacers. However, if you’re using a super stiff Stainless Steel cog like a Surly, it’s probably not needed.

Go with the Surly cog and Singlespeed spacer kit, it’s worth the cash. PROS: Attractive Design, Durable, Lightweight, Easy To Install CONS: Limited Compatibility.

I have used this kit to build quite a few SS bikes for people and they always turn out great. The spacers are two different widths so it makes getting a good chain line a snap. The kit comes with two size cogs, BONUS! So getting the gearing right just got easier.

Purchased this to switch my 18 yr/old Cannondale F600 to a SS. It was a very easy project and actually a lot of fun. The conversion was simple and placing the spacers properly helped to ensure a straight chain line.

The thing to be aware of is compatibility between the chain, rear cog, front chain ring and chain tensioner. I will need to make a few changes to get everything dialed in (i. e. changing the 18t cog that was included to a Shimano cog so that it will work better with the shimano chain tensioner that I’m using).

A bit disappointed, considering that it’s a WM made product. I’ve bought other products from Wheels Manufacturing before and they’re top quality. Not this one, however. The retainer nut is really bad and brittle.

It’s like you can only use it once. Try the Surly conversion kit instead.

Very good quality spacers. I was able to tune belt line (I use Gates Carbon Drive) just 1mm off. One more 1mm spacer would make it perfect. Still much better stuff compared to others on the market.

Great spacer kit for converting a standard freehub to run single speed. Love that the spacers are black instead of polished metal. Included lockring is handy also so you don’t have to use an old cassette one.

The included cog is garbage though, as expected. Just grab a quality cog and you’ll be good to go – there are enough spacers in this kit to get the chainline perfect. PROS: Attractive Design, Strong Construction, Lightweight, Great Mounting System.

Very well made. I was attempting to make a single speed on a wide 135mm old rear axle using a 7 speed freewheel. I had the chain line pretty close but the tensioner would not extend toward the center of the wheel far enough which allowed some skipping.

I believer on a modern hub using a freehub and cassette I could have manipulated the single speed cog and tensioner for a perfect alignment. This product did not work for me but it was no fault of the product.

I bought this because I wanted to ride my steel frame honzo as single speed occasionally. It fit my SRAM NX 11 speed free hub body with one spacer left over. Seems to be a good kit. Ill probably buy a few Shimano cogs to see what gearing I like best.

Used this kit on my budget SS 29er build. Works great to convert an 8/9 speed cassette hub to SS. Plenty of different sized spacers (and a visit to Sheldon Brown’s website) made it easy to get a perfect chainline.

It is working out great so far for XC riding on my SS MTB. The only moderate negatives are that only one 16t cog comes with the kit and that the cogs are relatively thin compared to higher-end cogs. It would be nice if they provided two different cogs (maybe a 16 and an 18).

Overall it is a good product and is a good value in my opinion. PROS: Affordable, Different sized spacers, Easy To Install, Perfect chainline easy CONS: Cogs are thin.

Haven’t had a chance to install yet. Machining looks excellent. Picked this up to turn an old 21 speed to a single, but still be able to coast. I’m too old to go fixie, lol. Would recommend & buy again.

These spacers are easy to set up and use, and are a perfect fit for the Surly singlespeed cogs. They make Singlespeed-converting a bike easier than any other spacer/clamp option.

The threads on the lock ring were not adequate to engage with the hub on my wheel. I wouldn’t bother commenting, but I had an old SunRace lock ring available and it worked just fine so it’s not the wheel or the hub that is the problem here.

I generally love Surly, but at this price point I didn’t expect to have to swap out parts to get this to work. Mediocre at best.

A great assortment of different widths to fine tune the chainline. I paired with a Surly cog that is also reversible for additional adjustment.

Works perfectly. I had to use a couple of spacers from cassette I’d removed to fine-tune the chainwheel-sprocket alignment, but that’s no problem. And it even comes with two cogs in case you want to vary your gear ratio every now and then.

Cheap. Works. Different spacer widths allow chain line alignmnent. Once you have the kit you can run any loose single sprocket you have left over in your shed.

The 16t cog didn’t fit on my hub, but the 18t did. Had to buy extra spacers, as these are wide and not as many, so not giving too many sizing options.

Used this to convert an ol geared DJ to a single speed and it wired perfectly. Only downside is that the cog was pretty thing so you can either buy a separate one or use this one. The cog works its just thin.

The SKYRC IMAX is the real version not a knockoff and the difference is night & day. This LIPO charger has better electronics and has a built in cooling fan to protect them. Also, the instructions are very detailed about everything you can imagine.

It also balances cells better and best of all it does not overcharge LIPOs like most chargers do, which will damage them beyond repair. Super charger for the price.

This kit came with everything needed to fit my Traxxas Rustler, and installation was simple and straight forward. The bearings that came in the kit are rubber sealed and smooth, they seem well made so far.

All the steel parts in this kit are thick and seem as though they will have very good longevity. I noticed two things when installing this kit that could be slightly concerning. The first is a slight fitment issue with the hub’s.

The lower pin is rather tight and could cause some binding in the suspension travel. The second is with the retainer ring that helps hold the upper pin in. It has a small split in it that the pin can slip out of should the grub screw come loose.

Ive been using the b6 mini for a couple of years to power all kinds of projects. Its very versatile and even has enough power to bring a dead car battery to life. Discharging takes a long time but charging is fairly quick unless its a monster of a battery- its wattage rating and the rating of your power supply will determine how much of those 50-60 advertised watts will be flowing.

I like it enough to have bought a second one for simultaneous use.

good quality. not sure if pointed tooth profile will wear faster than flat. great (maybe only) option for me to convert my disk hub into a fixed gear hub for my gravel bike.

Boring, plain, but works as advertised. You’re not gonna wear off any anodizing from these cogs cuz there aint none

Wide base is nice if you have aluminum free hub. I believe it’s wider & lighter than a surly on my other single speed. Aluminum carrier saves some weight. Plus it can be used as a fixed gear if wanted, as long as it’s on a 6 bolt hub.

Used it when I converted a Hope 4 Pro hub from Shimano MS to Sram. Works perfectly.

Usual Hope solution, two minutes, old spacers popped off, new spacers fitted in, wheel replaced off we go.

i only use the spacer not the sprocket yet. im using the 22 for now until i get stronger. Unfortunately I lived at SoCal. its either you go up or down. mostly i ride at rocky peak which is just like that up and down.

no flat road.

The parts installed easily, but I had a hard time finding a chain which would not jump off the freehub cog and slip. Tried 8-speed chain, 9-speed, single speed; none worked properly unless the length was set to pull the derailleur spring tightly.

I need to call Jenson or the manufacturer to see what the problem is.

Great price, easy to install, works well. Dinged it 1 star for lack of instructions. There’s a small space on the inside of my freewheel that makes me nervous, but not feeling any play or other problems.

Before you convert to single speed just remember from now on you’re always in the wrong gear.

This is a long term review. I’m not sure how I found these cogs and the Stainless chainrings, but I started using both on all of my bikes in 2011. I only used 14t on the rear. I never ran smaller Surly cogs, or any of the larger sizes (larger probably last longer).

At first I was running a 44t on the front and later 42t on commuters and 46t on my “road” bike. I run 20 inch wheeled bikes; bmx bikes setup with high posts and road tires, bmx setup similar but marathon plus tires for commuting, and a folding bike.

I mainly run these cogs on MX66 Shimano DX rear cassette hubs, but lately I run one bike with a Profile Totem hub that has a old Profile 3 speed Shimano compatible driver so I can run these cogs on it.

Before trying these (note I replace the cogs and chains at the same time): Generic cogs of the same size, 14t and even tried 13t, 300 miles and start sharktoothing. Yes cheap, maybe 10usd each. Shimano stock cogs, actually less like 200 miles when the teeth squish and start shark toothing.

These are about 10usd also. On my Profile totem and Madera cassette hubs, stock profile cogs last about 500 miles and get really noisy with serious squish marks and shark toothing. These cogs are about 25 to 30usd depending on where I buy.

Usa made but? When I finally was able to find the 3 speed shimano hub driver I was happy to use surly cogs. I never tried onyx cogs (just cost too much to find out if they are worth bothering with ) 50usd each.

Usa made like the profile ones though. Anyway with these Surly cogs 44/14 I was getting about 3000 miles out of the cog. I 46/14 I get 2500. I don’t let the cog shark tooth. I stop using the cogs if the teeth just seem offset.

The first cog I kept using until it hooked but afterwards I just replace after 1500 miles or try to 2500 means I got carried away. The wide base helps keep the driver from marking up, and maybe from slipping on threads like the Shimano DX hub driver has.

The offset helps with alignment. The cogs also don’t seem to rust easily. For 35usd at the moment of this review (sometimes I find them for 25usd or even less for 14t) these are well worth the price.

The Surly cassette cogs are super durable and have wide bases to prevent them from digging into your aluminum freehub cassette body on your rear hub. They might be a little heavier than aluminum alternatives, but you likely won’t wear one out any time soon.

The 20t allows for a great balance of trail riding for maintaining speed on flats and a good climbing gear when paired with a 32t chainring on a 29er mtb. The same setup with a 18t cog will provide a good speed in flatter terrains, but is significantly harder to push on steep sections or longer climbs.

20t will often allow me to continue riding up the climb while the 18t will have me walking quite a bit more.

Looks and feels high quality. Has stainless steel in all the right places. Feels a little hefty, but that’s ok for a hub that should last for decades.

This truly is the poor mans Paul. Wheels should be high on everyone’s list of upgrades. I built it up with a WTB KOM rim 29″ and White Industries Trials 20t freewheel and it is amazing. It rolls forever and picks up speed quickly and easily.

I definitely recomend it. surprisingly I also like the bolts offered rather than my QR skewers. They really have some good wheel hold with the knurling and they look extra clean. Excellent hub and an upgrade to everything less than $300.

You won’t be disappointed.

Built up my second fixed gear with this hub, I have only rode one time since finishing the new build (of an old frame). But is the hub is as good as the other Surly hubs I bought in the past I expect no problems and a long time before I need to do any service on this hub.
