20 Best Silicone For Mold Making (2023 Updated)

First, I have to say that this is a great product and a fantastic deal. Nothing against the Smooth-on quality. I love the kit because it comes with everything you need for a small production of 1-2 little medallions or small projects etc.

HOWEVER keep in mind these kits expire within about a year. I recevied 3 kits as a gift for Christmas one year (from 3 different people). I used most of the one kit with no issues but the other 2 completely expired within about a year.

And the resin I was using from the first kit started taking longer and longer to cure later in the year until it got chucked with the other two when I descovered the expiration. I kept these in my home, teperature controlled so it just has a very poor shelf life.

even if unopened. When I went to open one of the silicone parts of kit #2, it was completely solid in the bottle and it was unporable, therefore couldn’t be mixed with the other part. Thinking it was maybe just a fluke and I got a bad batch, I checked kit #3.

same issue. 🙁 Shame. Overall, I reccomend only buying the kit (or any batch of smooth-on products) when you’re ready to cast and only order the amount you will need. These will not store well.

Considering what you get for the price, this kit isn’t bad. However, if you plan on casting multiple copies, and by multiple I mean more than 5, look elsewhere. I bought this kid as a casting virgin.

The silicone pour went great; perfect, even. Everything worked well, there were no air bubbles, the mold was flawless. The problems began with the resin. The first two pours were completely air bubble filled, but, that is my problem, not the resin’s, I’ll admit that.

There was a problem, however, with the high pour. This resin is incapable of being poured high, leaving loads of air bubbles needing to be broke up with a shot of canned air before it began to gel. Once I started getting in the groove of things with the 3rd and 4th castings I was confident that from then on out it would be smooth sailing.

Then, the mold started to deteriorate. and quickly. On the 5th poor using plenty of mold release the silicone began to break down and pieces were missing in the resin casts. I would not recommend this for anyone but people who are casting for the very first time or people who are familiar with casting and only need to make 5 copies, tops.

Looking forward to playing with the rest of the kit, so far only used the Plasti-Paste II to make some mother molds for which I had already made the latex mold of other stuff. I like it quite well. It doesn’t smell much and is straightforward to measure, mix and apply.

It’s not so smooth though (I think i need to adjust my technique). What’s happening to me is that it’s so sticky it clings to my applicator stick as I smear it on and creates these little merangue-ish cowlicks all over.

When cured these become quite prickly to the touch. I am going to try letting it set for a little while and then smoothing/pushing these down while it is still a little malleable. I am hopeful that this will make handling the cured mother mold manageable with bare hands.

Overall the Plasti-Paste is a pretty convenient product to use and much less expensive than some other options I looked at. It’s hard for me to say how good a deal this kit is since the kit does not say if the product sizes are the same as what you get buying individual parts of it so I have not priced it against buying the individual components.

Some components don’t seem to be available through Blick outside of the kit at all (what’s up with that, Dick Blick?) making it harder. Main complaint is that they don’t sell all the parts on their own (which is more of a store issue than a product issue, I admit, which is why I didn’t mark it down any for that) so I ended up with some casting material I don’t care about in just to get the Sonite Wax and the Thickener.

I have been using this product for the past month, having switched from Alumilite brand’s similar pink silicone product. I have no complaints with either, but it is so easy to order the smooth on thru eBay i think I will stick with it.

I think you get a little more volume per dollar also. This stuff is simply mixed 50/50 by weight or volume, easy to get the ratio right. Alumilite has a liquid hardener in a small bottle. I find the Smooth-On a little easier to get the correct mix with and it is simple to mix up a partial batch and get it right.

The 1/2 dozen small molds I have made so far all came out well and seem to be very durable. Good Stuff!.

Good product for small projects. Seems to mold with detail. Watch the shelf life, keep the lids closed tightly, and shop around for vendors. Quick cure time, Which is nice. 50/50 mix is easy to measure.

easy to use , mix, and pour. sets up exactly like the instructions said no air voids. extra equipment needed bowl and silicone spatula from dollar store.

This silicone material was super easy to use and I especially appreciated the long pot time. I have a particularly cold house, so I allowed a few extra hours for curing. The mold came out perfectly and I’ve used it several times without tear.

The product works brilliantly to make a strong rubber mould BUT it is extortionately expensive and it will not cover the 45×45 cm stated on the packet unless you are moulding something almost flat and don’t require proper sides to your mould i.

e. for a 3 dimensional object. Beware it sets very quickly so don’t mix both containers willy nilly or you will end up with useless unusable rubber unless you work very quickly. Best to use greaseproof paper underneath whatever you are taking a mould of, when you remove your rubber mould you will appreciate this tip.

For a product costing £32 the instructions are very poor and leave many unanswered questions. I ended up having to buy 3 packs to complete my mould which looks great but I’ve yet to test it with plaster.

I love using this product, but it is expensive. Takes exceptional detail. This is the only product of it’s type that I have used, so can’t compare to other brands. I wish it had a slightly longer working time, but otherwise a really great product for my purpose.

I use this to make moulds for casting small objects in resin. Very simple to use, no gloves required and almost no cleanup (just wash your hands!) The putty is hardly sticky, so even dropping it on carpet isn’t really an issue unless you step on it by mistake.

Even then, the mixture only takes a few minutes to set, and is then easy to peel away. With careful application, this can make moulds with great precision. I used it to cast a nut and bolt with no damage to the threads on either.

Strongly recommend for small projects!.

I posted an earlier review a year or two ago, when I posted that, I said nothing but good things after using the product for 6-8 months, but have since found a negative, but one that you can work around.

When I first started using OohMoo 30, I had excellent results for many, many pours. Very flexible and offering exceptional detail. But after using for that time, I started noticing in certain detailed area’s of my castings, every once in awhile an air bubble would show up that was just under the surface.

I love this silicone because of it’s flexibility and for the reasonable cost. So, I went out and purchased a chamber and vacuum pump. I must say I had no idea there could be such great results. These days, nothing but exceptional molds and for the past year no problems whatsoever, and I have purposely used these molds more so I could compare it apples to apples.

A brand new vacuum chamber is absolutely worth the money and will help you produce top quality molds, definately invest in one! They are very easy to use. Also, last fall after purchasing a few silicone kits from DickBlick, FedEx delivered it to the wrong address.

I have been using this Rubber for many years to cast ny sculptures. Its very easy to use and works fantastic! The Smooth-On company is really great and if you have questions or want to know how to use any of their products they have all that info on their website nad the people that work there are great to help you out.

I have tried quite a few of their products and so far that are all really good, top professional quality. The Silicone rubber captures every tiny amount of detail, even fingerprints! so be sure you have wiped what you are casting off if you don’t want any hairs fingerprints or just a bump off before you mold it.

Also you do not need to use a mold release with this kind of rubber! so that’s good too! it saves money for one thing. I have molds I made many years ago so it holds up if you take care of them and are not to rough pulling your sculpts out of the mold.

If oyu ahve a lot of deep undercuts though you will tear and break bits off over time. If you need a lot of castings and have undercuts that are really deep look into using a urethane rubber. its harder to use and doesnt mix 50/50 and you will have to use a mold release but its a lot tougher rubber and will last a lot longer.

One thing I don’t like on all rubbers is the shelf life isn’t very long. months at most. so only buy what you are going to use in a few months! That’s one reason I like the sample packs. If I need more I buy 2 packs if In only molding small items.

Also use the Smooth on casting resins with this. they make top quality bright white or black if you like resin. It lasts it bit longer than rubber though! lol. Anyways I can’t say enough good about this product and the company that makes it.

They have always been helpful and wonderful to deal with. And if you get a group together they will come out and give demos on their products a lot of the time too!.

I am a beginner at using quality mold making products. I created a mold that I used to mass produce an object that had holes and slight undercuts. I was pouring resin In the mold and repeating almost immediately without giving the mold time to rest.

I probably completed 30 objects when the mold tore. I now understand that I should not have reused the mold so quickly and that I should use one of SmoothOns other mold making products. The support team at smooth on is extremely helpful and is the first place one should start before buying their products to get the best product for a project.

My next attempt will be to use MoldStar smooth-on.

Awesome silicone mold for use with any sugar-based caramel or hard candy. I wouldn’t recommend for gummy’s unless you have your formula exactly correct.

I’ve been making gummies for years and this mold is by far the best I’ve ever used! It has made my process so much easier. I plan on purchasing more in the future!

I purchased this mold and the square State symbol as a safety feature in my family. The quality of the molds and impression details are amazing.

They keep running out in store so had to order online. Found they have a 6 pack and a much better price. This Silicon mold is very good for replicating detailed pieces. I use it with PMC3 Fine Silver.

The only issue is the more detail the hard it is to remove. It requires quessing the exact point in the hardining of the silicon. To hard, you may not get it off of deep detailed pieces. To soft and the image detail can be reduced or stretch.

I started using mold release with it to prevent the silicon being permently imbeded. Also the color (purple) can stain some materials when porous. But best I’ve found for replicating 22-26 million year old coral fossils and making jewlery and pendants out of the results.

Even good for double sided pieces, but mold release does help qith this also to be able to seperate the two sides of the mold. Also picking the right hardness of the second half, removing it before fully set, but hard enough to keep its shape.

The product itself is great; the issue I have is both parts were supposed to be 1/2 pound apiece. They looked to be the same amount when first opened, but as I’ve been making molds, there is now significantly less of the white left compared with the purple.

When making a mold, I weigh out my two parts with a gram scale so I know they’re exactly the same amount, so I don’t know why there is such a difference. I’m going to end up with a good bit of unusable purple left.

I am so glad that Joann’s carries these unique products, even though they are not “in demand. ” I made an impression of my granddaughter’s hand using safe clay (also purchased at Joann’s), and then I used the Easy Mold to make a reverse mold.

That allowed me to make several duplicates of her sweet hand with plaster (also purchased at Joann’s) , so I could give one to her parents, keep one for me, and use another for a different craft. What a treasure!.

This is a really nice product that works very well. Not only do you get detailed castings but the silicone does a great job reproducing smooth and ridged textures. Drying time is quick yet very reasonable work time and thick enough not to leak out of the former easily.

I am a professional 2d production artist specializing in outdoor durable prints and advertising. I see this product as a great way to get into the third dimension and reproduce works, parts, etc.

I started making a mold and thing that I cannot find the part anywhere. It is Insulator piece. Some clay and mixing two gel liquid to make a mold. Mold are very simple. Like the direction said. The perfect mold I ever made.

Super simple. No smell what so ever. I love it a lot!.

It came a day early and I’m super happy with it. If I wanted to make more then just 1 medium sized mold, baseball size, and one small mold, i definitely would have gone for the gallon sized silicon. But 2lbs is perfect for what i want to do.

Ich habe den Tipp bekommen die Formen mit kalten Wasser und Spüli zu reinigen oder bei hartnäckigen Gerüchen Backpulver anzuwenden. Habe ich beides probiert. klappt mäßig aber ist kein Drama für mich! :).

Mixes well using equal parts of each bottle. Slow enough cure that you have time to pour it properly but cures fast enough to use the mold within hours. As with any 2 part reactive mixture, It’s a really good idea to have everything ready for filling before you mix the solutions.

Also, if you can, always have an extra mold project ready to go in case you end up with leftover liquid rubber. This stuff is not cheap so you don’t want to waste it. If a mold is underfilled, you can add new silicone into the underfilled mold.

In my experience it has no problem sticking to itself without a seam or a weak spot. I’ve only tried this by mixing the newer batch within 30 minutes but I don’t know if it would work after a longer cure time.

This is the best silicone mold product I’ve found so far. It cures very quickly, doesn’t make a liquid mess like some others, doesn’t react poorly to 3D printer plastic, and is excellent at picking up fine details from the reference shape.

I’ve only been using it for a few months now, but the molds have also maintained their durability exceedingly well in that timeframe. If you’re looking for a high quality mold maker, I highly recommend this product.

I have made several molds for casting acrylic resin pen blanks, duck call blanks,wine bottle stopper blanks, handgun grips, and several other prototype items. It will pick up so much detail that the woodgrain is visible on the reproductions from the wood I used to make the original piece on some of items I molded.

I don’t use any mold release and just clean the mold when I’m finished with mild soap and water. All my castings pop out of the mold without any problems. And I’m combining wood and acrylic and other stranger things together in the same pour and never had a problem.

I also cure my acrylic in a pressure pot and have had no issues with the molds in the pressure pots at 80 psi. I did not cure the molds themselves in the pressure pot. I let it cure in my home made box at room temperature for 48 hours.

I have previously used mold rubber from Smooth-on but due to long shelf storage the RTV turned too thick to use so I figure I would try the Alumilite. Since it was available in a smaller container I figure I will be able to use it up before it gets too thick.

Mixing is a 10 to 1 ratio not 50/50 so careful measuring is required. It flowed nicely around my master and was dry overnight. It seems to be more flexible than the Smooth-on so you can probably do complex undercuts without the rubber tearing.

I had very few bubbles and I would recommend this product to anyone making molds for home hobby use.

Great idea poor execution. The mold is deeper than you think it should be. Pieces come out thicker, where a small jump ring doesn’t sit nicely. To make a set of medium or small earrings you need to bake twice since the mold doesn’t have two same sizes in the mold.

Must practice using and throw down after applying liquid polymer to prevent air holes. A definite trial and error.

I hosted a party to make earrings and necklaces with friends and family and this product is amazing! It is easy to work with as long as you follow the instructions carefully. I have seen many complaints about air bubbles but if you follow the instructions and tap the mold before putting it in the oven, you will be successful.

We followed the instructions carefully and made all the earrings we wanted in different colors. Awesome products! Tricky part is to know up to where you need to fill the mold but once you get the hang of it, you will be off to making beautiful and unique earrings.

I do like that there is a bezel mold for the cabochon mold. The only problem I have with it is that it seems a bit clunky for a bezel. I’d like more rounded bezel and maybe a thinner bezel, if it were possible.

I also seem to get a lot of bubbles in the corners too.

I had better luck with this mold versus the mandala mold. Still had some breaking at the small connection points when demoulding the baked liquid sculpey. I’ve seen people using this with regular sculpey premo so I think I might try that instead or as a texture mat.

I could always press the mold into clay and fill the relief with liquid sculpey.

Such a versatile product. Can be used inside these special thin/slim molds by squeezing any color of Liquid Sculpey directly onto this or any other silicone mold. They’re the consistency of PVA Glue, bake for a few minutes & comes out as thin as lace if u like.

Can then be used to apply to jewelry or it can be “the jewelry”. Make window sun catchers as this sticks to glass & mirror surfaces like a Shrinky Dink. Sorta static cling-ish!.
