Very well designed and made. it works very very well. I was amazed just how easy I was able to dig in my clay based soil. It also cut through the tree roots easily. I would recomment this to everyone.

This isn’t easy to use. Heavier than expected for a “branch saw”. And sure it will saw through roots, but whatever is too tough for the spear head shovel can get removed with a smaller hand saw. It’s quite long and heavy to use as a “traditional saw” as well.

Im short at 5’1”, but not weak by any means. My husband who is 6’2” has yet to try it so he may love it but he has the power pole saw that I don’t like to use so this was for me really. I got this one instead of the other brand because it said “original”.

But maybe the other brand w the round handle will be better, but then it’s not used for “branches”. I think it will most likely this will be a waste of $15 in shipping both ways.

The shovel seems to be very solidly built. Both the blade and shaft are made from strong steel and the welds seem to be applied well. Without gloves it is easy to use the shovel since the handle is quite comfortable.

I was pleasantly surprised, in fact, at how comfortable the handle is for me. However the foot pads at the back end of the blade are very small and narrow. Even still it seems like this shovel will serve me well for a long time.

QVC cracks me up demonstrating “tough” digging tools in loose potting soil and beds where plants could be moved by hand. Thank goodness for the reviews that convinced me to order this a couple of years ago.

We have a 7 acre yard with lots of landscaping and a large vegetable garden. Oh, did I mention the hard, red clay soil and tons of tree roots?? We’ve put this spade/shovel through its paces! It’s made it possible for me to accomplish jobs without help from my husband and now I see him reaching for it himself as the shovel of choice for so many jobs.

And despite the rock hard soil and his notorious abuse of tools, it’s still going strong. Based on our experience, we recommend this tool.

No gardener should be without this spade/shovel. As a woman who hates to admit that I can’t do everything, this tool proves my point. I own many garden shovels, including a treasured smith and hawken spade, but still I was attracted to this shovel. It lives up to all the hype. The design enables a 65 year old person with 5 permanently broken and displaced ribs to effectively dig in the garden.

My gardening friends questioned the design, but once they tried it, they also made the purchase. This shovel easily works in soils where other shovels fail.

I have one that I use ALL the time. It’s my go to shovel. My elderly mother and father stayed the winter with me. My mother found this shovel easy to use and it became her go to shovel. I purchased a shovel for her to take back home.

I sometimes wish it had a slightly longer handle but it may change the dynamics of how it works. I’ve used this to dig up trees, bushes, tree roots, dig holes, post hole, tree stumps, and for planting flowers.

It doesn’t bend or slide. I’ve broken a metal handle shovel, a wooden handle shovel, a metal handle rake, and even some kind of plastic resin handle hole. This shovel looks like it holds up under my abuse of outdoor tools.

This shovel really does everything it says it does. I’m seventy-five with multiple spine surgeries and I am also legally blind, so, these disabilities make it hard to hold my balance with a regular shove.

This little guy can slice through the roots of bushes and small trees easily so I don’t fall over. There is also a smaller one that I anticipate will be good for bulb splitting. Especially, irises and daffodils.

The best shovel I have ever used. The handle is plastic so no splinters or fiberglass in hand and strong enough to use as a pry bar. I cut off 1” on each side of the shovel to make it narrow to dig trenches.

Received my shovel very quickly from Target. It arrived in good condition. I was very happy with the quality of the product. Very nice shovel.

A great handle. But. the spade head is the crap-est Chineseum ever. Yes the handle might be worth the price. You will be changing the spade end out day one. I gave it to my kid when it arrived to dig a one foot deep trench through the lawn.

It didn’t get 5 feet. Kid tried to weld head, just melted handle some.

I absolutely love this packable field shovel. It’s great to use for all sorts of advantages you go on. It comes in a nice small bag for easy storage. This shovel is very light in weight and easy to carry in the case.

The material feels very durable and seems like it will last a long time. The shovel comes with a rubber handle that gives you a nice grip well using it. And when you are all done using the shovel it’s easy to fold it back up.

This shovel locks into place when you unfold it to use. And when you are through using it you just fold it and it snap down in place. Its a great feature to have so you know the shovel is secure and won’t open back up on you unless you snap it back out to use.

It’s easy to put back in bag to store it till you need to use it again. I’m so happy i found such a great product that gives me the space i need and does the job with no problems at all. It is a great shovel to own.

The sol field shovel works great! I recently used it on a camping trip and worked exactly as I hoped. The serrated side make it easy to dig through small roots, while the carrying case and compact nature makes it easy to pack.

It is a little heavier than I would like which can be important when packing light for a longer trip. I had recommended it to several friends while camping. Can’t wait to take it metal detecting.

My daughter purchased a home where oak tree roots and thick root matting had to be removed so various areas could be resodded and ornamentals planted. Various style shovels, 4 prong cultivators, pry bar and loppers just weren’t working.

This shovel is remarkable. It cuts through the matting and smaller roots easily so they can be raked out and helps expose the larger roots that need to be pulled up and cut with loppers. Using it avoids the damage to the irrigation system that a gas-powered machine would have most likely caused.

Being able to hold the round handle enables you to more easily exert downward pressure without putting strain on your back – body weight and the shovel does the work. So glad I found this shovel. Just wish I had found it years ago especially when dealing with palm tree roots that are very invasive.

I just received this today. I really wasn’t sure what I was ordering as the pictures that are shown are of two different shovels, but I will be digging up a bunch of older bushes this year and wanted something to help me with the roots I know I will find.

What I got was the narrow shovel version not the wider shovel shape. What I got was not a round “radius” handle, but a handle that is a piece of plastic about 2 inches wide with nothing to grip and very hard to maneuver.

It also appears that it would be hard on the palm of my hand as there isn’t much to work with. The vote is still out on whether or not I’ll keep this as I want to actually try it out and really don’t want to pay the return S&H due to being misled.

The shovel shape is not what concerns me, even though the pictures were misleading. What bothers me is the most ridiculous handle I’ve ever seen for a yard tool that is made to do some heavy work on roots.

There’s nothing to grab or really hold onto! Very misleading. For the price, I would expect a workable handle!! Maybe the longer handle shovels have the “radius” handle, but this one did not! Hope this helps.

Overall pretty good, the edges are rather sharp and cut the bag revealing the bodies left ear but some duct tape purchased at my neighborhood Aubuchan solved that issue as well. The surface of the shovel is smooth and the blood wiped right off with a blue shop rag purchased in isle 3 of my friendly neighborhood Aubuchan hardware! I highly recommend this shovel and also the staff at Lee Aubuchan as they have a friendly smile and “tight lips”.

I love my Ames shovel. It is well made and easy to manipulate garden issues.

I purchased my first Rigid long handle, round point shovel over 20 years ago. At the time it cost me a pretty penny but turned out to be well worth the money. I used it daily for several years and for the rest of its life it sat in the back of my Ute.

The handle was light but still strong. The 14-gauge heat treated steel blade was tough and never failed when I used it for levering heavy sewer lids into place. After 20 years of neglect the shovel blade was worn and the handle started to crack and get wrinkly.

When I purchased a replacement I found my original Ridgid shovel had Made in Mexico/Assembled in the USA stamped on it but my replacement shovel had a sticker stating that it was assembled in the USA from imported materials.

So now I have no idea where my new shovel was originally made.

I have 50482 170FG , which is the round point fiberglass handle shovel. I purchased it from Home Depot between 2005 and 2008. It’s my favorite shovel and the heaviest duty one I have ever had. However, cheap disposable shovels are outlasting it.

I’m just a home owner, and I don’t use the shovel for a living. I just have a lot of roots and black shale in my yard. The first time I had to replace the shovel, my neighbor and I were replacing our adjoining fence and the shovel bent at the shank right below the end of the handle.

Home Depot told me to call rigid for a replacement and rigid sent me back to home depot to do an exchange. That was a little annoying then, and I don’t want to go through that again. However, Home Depot doesn’t carry the shovel anymore.

Fast forward to 2018 and my wife or son used the shovel in the back yard and now the blade is splitting in two places and it has folded upwards to a right angle. I really don’t want to cut the bad area out and drill holes at the cracks to relieve the metal stress.

Fortunately Rigid has always stood by their products and my dad and I have always liked them, but I’m not really happy with this shovel.

Today I broke my Rigid Long Shank Shovel after more than 30 years use. I bought the shovel at Home Depot, Santa Rosa, CA, in mid 1980’s and have used it hard over the years, but today I pushed too hard trying dig up a bush.

I will try to find another hickory handle so I can resurrect my old friend – I get attached to my tools. I retired in 2004 and now live in the beautiful Black Hill of SD. Until today, I have continued using my buddy hard and he did not let me down – I just pushed too hard.

Will also see if I can find another just like this one to use for most jobs, fix this one as best I can and retire it to lesser work.

I love the long handle. However, the blade is a thinner gauge than my other shovels. I would not try to force my full 180 pounds on the blade, especially at some small angle for fear the blade would bend.

Knowing that, I can be careful and the shovel will still be very useful. I just won’t use it for really heavy-duty work. So, for light duty work I recommend it. It is a good price-performer.

I have two of these shovels. The first carried the Green Thumb label but is the same shovel as this one. It is rugged and ideal for situations when a reduced size blade is needed. The price was fair also.

I’m an avid gardener and handy person so this Fiskars Transfer Shovel is a welcome thing to have around my big yard that I work often on. My old flat straight shovel is very old also beat up which is nice to have a great replacement.

I’m pretty impress with the sturdiness, weight and built of it. I particularly like the rubber grip to hold on for no slip as you shovel and on the end as well. The head of the shovel is much wider that my previous one which picks up much more material also the back flanges that holds the material in which is bigger as well.

The orange color makes it easy to find when you leave it out somewhere. This shovel has some weight to it and metal thickness on shovel head makes it strong for heavy jobs. Fiskars Transfer Shovel works well for what I need and happy with the quality.

We purchased this shovel as a gift for our adult son who metal detects. He loves it and we were so amazed at the different uses for it around the home and yard that we ordered two more. I used mine to dig up and divide some ornamental grasses and this shovel made it a breeze!.

Well built shovel, & I just didn’t want to pay those sometimes very high prices for a shovel. Heavy duty & I was particularly very interested in the long spine going down the center to make it even more sturdier.

I’m not sure of the exact weight, but I would say under 3#’s.

We’ve had more snow than usual this Winter and even heavy duty plastic shovels just aren’t satisfying in removing snow down to the surface, especially after the metal strip and plastic quickly start wearing away.

I already have both a gas snow blower and an electric snow shovel. Both these items do a good job of removing the bulk of snow from my driveway and sidewalks, depending on the snow depth, but there always seems to be a thin layer of snow left behind on the surfaces, especially when the snow is icier.

This heavy duty steel shovel does a great job of final clean-up by removing that last layer of snow down to the surfaces (I wouldn’t trust soft, light-weight aluminum). The strong lacquered wooden shaft arrives separated from the shovel head.

A wood screw is included to keep the shaft in place once you’ve pushed the shaft into the shovel head sleeve. There are two other holes in the metal shovel head sleeve beside the main one so I screwed in two more wood screws for a very secure shaft attachment.

The solid plastic handle is attached to the shaft on one side by a screw but there is a place on the opposite side of the handle where another screw can go so I put another screw there as well so the handle is firmly attached.

The metal sleeve is riveted onto the shovel head and the rivets are quite solid. I’ve now used the shovel several times for final clean-up and breaking up loose ice and have been very satisfied so far.

This plow saved a lot of hard work. It’s definitely not the type of shovel you want to carry snow or heave over your shoulder. It is the shovel you want if you can push the snow a long-distance, need to scrape packed snow or ice off your sidewalk, or if you need just do a quick shove and toss.

The best approach is to use this shovel with a more ergonomic shovel that has a deeper well for tossing and throwing. I love the sturdiness of this plow though. So much sturdier than the plastic kind.

Brought this for my son, who is in the army reserve, he had been looking for one to keep in his car. When I gave it to him, he was really happy. It was just what he was looking for. I was really impressed with it as well and will be ordering another for myself later on.

This shovel is just what I needed. The blade is sharp enough to cut into the ground to dig up perennials. It has a wide area to step on to push it into the ground.

I needed new shovels to dig a grave for one of my old dogs that I loved for almost 15 yrs. I needed a short one and long one. They did a good job.

Let’s talk honest and adult for a second. Everyone knows that the Gerber e-Tool is THE tool. But how many of us really need to dig a fox hole? Even in a long term zombie apocalypse event if you really needed to dig a major hole you’d go find a full sized shovel.

And at $70 to $130US if you are not military or such then you are just making a fashion statement. If you really get out for more than a day hike, and need something better than a gardening trowel the Schrade SCHSH1 Shovel is a solid tool worth a look.

In fact, at least here in Oregon, you are required by law to have both shovel and axe to camp out in Forest Service lands. What’s to dislike? ============== I am not sold on the blade shape. Snow? Can’t see how on a camp shovel that would matter.

Chopping? Man. Ok, yes you can chop with this but if you don’t have an actual hatchet handy then get one. Maybe it is just a structural thing to allow a thinner blade. At any rate, I’d have preferred a deeper scooping ability to actually remove dirt.

I have concerns about the long term strength of a pin system for the telescoping handle. It seems that the constant abuse on the pin would eventually make it fail. But, if you really plan to do That much digging with basically an entrenching tool then invest in the top of the line.

I suspect that despite my concerns the average heavy camper will never reach the breaking point. This will only be proven after years of use though. The so-so ========== Still no clue why any shovel brand has a stake pounding surface on a shovel.

Man, if all you brought in your bug-out bag or on your week long camping trip was a folding shovel then you didn’t plan right. Fortunately the Schrade stake pounder is in an ok place. It doesn’t really interfere with the locking mechanism.

I might someday figure out how to remove it but it isn’t that big of a deal. The 90 degree lock is actually “90 degrees”. Ideally it should be a little less than 90 for optimum hoe-type digging. But not a huge deal.

At 2 pounds this is not an ultralight hiker tool. I could care les about that. but. if you are going several miles into the rough, well, 2 pounds of shovel on top of other gear. Yippie. The sheath. It is a sheath.

Cordura with very thin “plastic” liner. It is a shovel sheath so what is to expect? Oh yea. Maybe molle compatible next time, Schrade? I love the versatility of the sheath on your SCHF9 (as far as “attaching” goes) and your shovel deserves something similar.

What is there to like? ================= I like the sharpened edge. I HAVE to say that the warnings about the edge are a little hyped. The edge on the Schrade Shovel isn’t any sharper than a shovel you buy at the hardware store.

You wont cut a steak with it, and you wont cut your finger on it. However, you will definitely cut off fingers and hands if you get them in the way of a chop! Having a decently sharp shovel is actually important, but too sharp and the blade would get easily damaged on small rocks as you dug, So yea.

respect it but don’t fear it. Fearing a tool makes it more dangerous. The locking ring is solid. I Have used many folding shovels over the years and man, you really don’t want to over tighten this, and no matter what shovel there is always a little play.

and the Schrade is very steady for not a lot of tightening. It is 2 pounds. While it can suck carrying it out somewhere that weight aids in digging and chopping roots out of the way. So that 2 pounds pays off.

Got to dig a latrine hole in rough ground? Yea. 2 pounds is a good thing. So, in short, I’ve used the $9 shovels. You pay over time because they don’t last. I don’t need to dig a fox hole every time I pitch tent, so a $100 Gerber makes no sense.

Schrade’s $35 shovel hits a good spot with price versus durability and function. Don’t be afraid to get one, it will last you.

Love Schrade and Gerber products, great products at a great price and this shovel did not disappoint. Feels well made, sharp compact for carry. A little tight locking in position but should loosen some with use, better a little tight than loose.

It is made of qualiity materials, well designed and reliable. Fits on the outside pack or in a pocket. Cuts through small roots and move rocks without destroying shovel. The spade lock is tight and no wobble.

This is the best shovel ever. I have a hill that has everything in it from vines, rocky soil, creeping Charlie and this shovel goes right through it. The quality is amazing- it has yet to bend or dull from use.

I bought this shovel in hopes it would be better than a regular shovel in areas that had grass. It was useless. I think the notching actually made it more difficult to dig in. I even tried sharpening it with a grinder.

It did not help much. Of coarse, after sharpening it I can’t return it so this shovel was a total loss. This is not a super shovel, it is a super waste of time and money.

Just what I needed for berries that fall off palm trees. I can scoop up without all the dirt also. Nice size not heavy.

I use it to clean out the sand in my chicken coop. It works great, and makes sifting the sand quicker and easier.
