20 Best Shells For Turkey Hunting (2023 Updated)

The website describes these bibs in a different way than they are worn. Online it says “Utilizing GORE-TEX stretch technology in key areas that typically inhibit movement, the Hudson Bib keeps you absolutely dry while also providing the unencumbered range of motion necessary to get into and out of blinds or deep cover.

” As you guys use the words “absolutely dry”: I disagree. Under the “Why we made these”, “The Hudson delivers maximum mobility and comfort for the unrelenting wet & cold experienced on a full day waterfowl hunt.

” I am very unhappy with my purchase of these. I wore these on Friday all day long for an offshore fishing trip. As I sat on the way out into the ocean, I could feel my pants getting soaking wet. I realized that there is a mesh part where the bottom is.

This was not said on the website. The website states these are 100% waterproof, and I highly disagree. As I thought about these bibs and how you hunt in them, these are not efficient in waterfowl hunting.

When sitting on the ground or a layout blind when it is wet or humid outside, you get wet. I am highly discouraged about my purchase as I read that they will be 100% waterproof and they are not. I feel that the Hudson Bibs are not what they state on the website.

They’re pretty durable and will keep your legs dry, and really keep out the wind. The knee pads are a great addition to a waterfowler’s bibs. I didn’t think much of it until I wore them for the first time, and it makes for a much more pleasant hunt when you climbing in and out of layout blinds and packing up decoys, etc.

You use them a lot more than you think! The set it and forget it straps are very comfortable, and the fit is nice. I’m 5’9” and 150lbs and the medium is a perfect fit with room to spare and could let out the shoulder straps a lot.

I just wish the fleece liner went down to or just below the knee to add a little warmth to them. Also while I have not had any problems with the leg zippers it would be nice to have the larger lugged zipper like what is on the torso down the legs rather than the small ones they have.

As always, no disappointment in Sitka Gear quality. I’m looking forward to using them for the upcoming season. I’m writing this review mostly based on sizing. I’m 5’11, 210lbs with a stocky/athletic build.

I usually wear an XL in all outer layer garments, including Sitka Gear. I originally purchased the bibs in XL as I normally would and they were pretty big, even with full layering as I would for late season waterfowl hunting.

I exchanged them for a pair of larges and that made a huge difference. Even with the same layering pieces I eliminated a ton of excess material but still gave me room and have comfort to move. I read several other reviews that stated the same thing but needed to see for myself.

I’m glad I switched sizes. If you’re looking for an all around bib Hudson is it. I’d also like to thank Sitka support for helping with this decision.

Bought it a little late for this spring season. Colors look amazing. Decoys seem a little heavy for carrying. Inflated them and they are holding nicely. Each decoy is supposed to have one folding stake and one carry bag.

The box they came in was pretty beat up. There was only one stake and one bag for the two of them. Called Cabela’s. No help except to give me customer service number for AvianX. Called AvianX. Awesome customer service.

They sent me the stake that was missing and the missing carry bag is on back order.

Excellent quality typical of all Avian decoys. Durable hard body exhibiting great feather detail. Well designed. Two head configurations give you options in the field when you need them depending on the temperature of the birds that you are hunting.

I hunt Rios in Texas and admit to being “off” using decoys for awhile. Too often had birds responding until they saw the set up and then go silent. Last year decided to use the AVIAN-X collapsible Jake and hen and got a bird opening morning who would not leave the Jake alone.

This year I decided to buy the HDR version and used the aggressive head option. First off, the quality of the bird is great and the realism is amazing. Set the HDR Jake up the afternoon of opening day with a feeder hen and lookout.

Windy and pretty quiet. About 4 pm saw three Toms running in from 60-70 yards; straight to the HDR Jake. Thought at first they were Jakes as well so I started videoing the attack. After 15 seconds of watching each bird taking his turn spurring the decoy I realized they were long beards.

Put down my phone and picked up my gun. The Toms were grouped so closely around the HDR I got two of the three with one shot. I am headed to Iowa this week to hunt Easterns and the HDR Jake will be riding along with me.

Looking forward to what will hopefully be a repeat performance. My recent experience has convinced me that having an aggressive Jake in the setup is a must.

It does fit a 2x-3x body frame. There is room for additional adjustments on the shoulder straps to fit a taller or shorter torso. It does not have a spine pad. For some odd reason, newer turkey vest do not have the pads mounted on the back anymore.

I recommend lightly washing or running the vest under a tap to wash the factory smell out and soften the fabric to make less noise. Do not get the seat pad wet.

Vest its light but durable. Isnt bulky, and has ample pockets and pouches to hold what you need to turkey hunt.

I love this vest! I don’t know why I haven’t owned one before now. This vest has room for all kinds of gear. It would be good for fisherman and even hikers to carry gear in.

I purchased this call before the season here in PA. I took it with me to scout in the woods a couple days then I hunted the junior hunt with a mentor with this call. It sounds fantastic, one of my favorite calls I have ever bought.

BUT, by the time these scouting periods and couple hunts were over, they latex was already stretched and warn out. I don’t know if I got a bad one or they all do this. This would 100% be my new go to call if it lasted longer.

It’s soft in the beginning but not squeaky and you can get good rasp when you want to. Very versatile great sounding call. Not sure if I will buy another one if they don’t even last me half a season.

I finished up last turkey season with the hook mouth calls. They worked great on flat ground birds, as well as those tough mountain birds. The calls helped me take 3 really nice birds in just a handful of hunts at the end of season.

They really sound great, can be quite, and can also be loud and raspy. Great for tree yelps, purrs, and even cutting. very versatile in volume and tone. My only issue with the calls were there durability.

They started coming untaped the last couple hunts. Overall good calls!.

Really great sound to the call. Very easy to use . I recommend for beginners and experienced hunters who love a great call.

I bought this strutter decoy and it’s the best on the market! I love the interchanging heads (fighter and breeder) and tail feathers (provided, are so realistic, and option to use a real fan). Also, wing feathers can be installed and removed very easily.

Overall, highly recommend if you want a high-quality strutter in your arsenal.

I was working a flock of birds down here in Florida several weeks ago and had come to my wits end with the hens pulling the gobblers away from me twice already. It was getting late in the morning and I was running out of options to get into shooting range.

I popped this out and crawled around the palmettos and watched 2 gobblers turn and head my way once they saw it. They got 30 yards and I popped to the side and took out the biggest one. Most intense shot ever and now Im hooked on using this! This is a equalizer on henned up gobblers.

This is a great decoy I like the extra large size it hides you well, the turkey foot base is nice, decoy and base are all well made I have no problem folding it up and it is easy to carry. The decoy looks very realistic so remember”safety first” do not use this if there is any risk of another hunter seeing you especially in the woods.

I had another hunter sneek in as I was working a bird if I would have been using the decoy to close the distance it could have been bad the only thing he shot was the bird I was working.

Easy fold up which makes it easily portable vs full size decoys; silhouette works nice, looks nice. I’ve used it twice with my full size spread.

I needed to replace my slate call and thought I would try the glass and get a box while I was at it. Probably should of just bought the slate. The box gives decent sounds, need to work it hard. The glass requires a lot of sanding to get decent sound.

I am afraid when it comes time to hunt the glass may not be dependable since I need to sand each time I pick it up. The diaphragm call has really good rich sound. Not terrible, just average.

I bought this setup as my first starter pack when I began turkey hunting and am still using it! The box call has a real crisp sound and the glass is good if you sand it down. I learned to use a mouth call with this set as well.

Highly recommended!.

This Raspy Hen Combo kit is a great friction combo set for starters or experts. Great old hen times and sounds form the box and you can get some softer sounds out of the glass. I will continue to buy H.

Turkey looks very realistic. The taxidermy eye makes it the product it is. I just hope it doesn’t get scratched up and lose its realism. Product sets up very easy, has option to put real feathers for tail, which would make this turkey indistinguishable from the Tom you are calling in! String is adequate length, will definitely be bringing my own 550 cord for the hunt in case 20ft isn’t enough but I don’t see it being a problem normally.

If you purchase item in store, you will save $5-7, but I absolutely cannot stand going in a Walmart. This will be the last product I will buy from Walmart though due to their lack of respect for disabled service members/veterans.

However, that does not affect my review of this product, as Primos has nothing to do with Walmart.

I stuffed my other rubber decoys inside the hull of the B-mobile. Its a larger decoy than some of the competitors, however its light and well designed. Im going to put an eastern turkey tail on it though, simply to make it even more realistic.

Probably the best mouth call I have ever used in all of my 30 years hunting the long beards. It produces awesome life like Purrs, Cuts, KeeKKee, Yelps. Very well made. Well worth the money. I’m giving a 5+ star rating Thank You.

The call makes fantastic clucks but the yelps and purrs produced are not very good quality unless you really hammer on it. Matt is one of my favorite hunters and the man is an expert so I jumped on this call, but in the end, the call is no longer in my turkey vest.

Good targets, folded from the factory so you have to flatten them out under large coffee table style books or something of that nature to hang them nicely on a target backer. Kinda cruddy, but good otherwise.

This target is amazing the anatomy is great and is also great for beginners because it tells you where to aim and where you want most of the pellets to hit. After I got my target practice done I took my favirote one and hung it up in my room.

Bought a dozen half way through last season to use in the late season with our full bodies as real geese go “belly down” to feed and shells are actually realistic. Time will tell. Its great that guys are posting up things about their durability not being the best so that buyers can see that.

In 35 years of goose hunting and guiding, one thing is for certain, if the product isn’t durable, it’s not a dollar. These look not too bad and pass the “fingernail” test, paint doesn’t seem to come off which is more than a guy can say about far too many decoys.

But if they end up cracking down the seam, thumbs down!!.

I’ve looked around for years and bought many different types of Goose / Duck decoys. I descided to give these a try and bought x 2 packages. After setting these up with x 2 packages of the Higdon Alpha Wobbler Magnum’s everything looked great ! They stack well if you put them together correctly (sizes vary slightly for this reason).

Having the velvet heads really gives you a better realistic looking neck / head. I’ve used them in nice weather and in snowy conditions. The heads are sometimes a bit tight to fit in, but I can see that overtime, they’ll be fine.

No issues with the Higdon series of Goose Decoys. As for now they suit my needs and price range. I’ve given x 4 stars and not x 5 only because the heads are a little tight and not 100% perfect. Again, I’m sure I’ll be able to give x 5 stars after they loosen up a bit.

I cant belive this call was less than $30 and it belts out dozens of realistic wildlife sounds. Loudly. Must be amazing with a small set of speakers attached. Really cool device with excellent LED display of the sound.

Hand held size and runs on a couple AAA batteries. Very realistic tones of toms and hens. Also locator calls of yotes and hawks and crows. Scares the heck out of my housecats. Worth it just for that.

Check local state regs if this is approved for hunting purposes FYI.

Gobblers responded great to this call in the tree and on ground. I hunt in Florida panhandle, eastern strain of turkey. Gobble sounds great too. Called up two gobblers my third time out hunting with this call.

This call is great, plenty loud with an adjustable volume, and very easy to use. Only critique is that the buttons are small so it could be an issue using with gloves. I was driving the neighbors turkeys crazy with it so come hunting season I know itll work.

First off this is a great turkey choke for beretta /benelli shotguns. People are saying they will not fit there shot guns. Just do some research before you nock this product and you will find out primos does make the choke in the optima and the Mobil choke tubes and yes beretta uses both of these tubes in different shotguns and that is why they work in some and not the others I think Cabela’s is offering the Mobil choke tube model and they should put In description so it would be less confusing.

I am not sure if they just carry the Mobil or if they can get the optima choke tube as well. It’s always best to call if your not sure about which tube to buy. I do know that they do make both models for the beretta / benelli shotguns.

And they do work great in them. I have pattern my beretta with 4 different types of turkey shotgun loads in 5 shot and all my shells shot awesome patterns with the jelly head choke tube. I can even shoot a good pattern at 50 yards which is way more than enough range to kill a turkey! So my suggestion if you want a good turkey choke this is it and also do a little research and find the one that works with your shotgun thanks.

I’ve used this choke for over two years and I don’t have a bad thing to say about it. It holds a tight pattern at long distances and will still demolish a gobbler as if it is at close range. It works well with the Winchester longbeard xr’s which is my main ammo of choice.

That being said, just because it works well for me doesn’t mean it will work the same with other applications. As well as different ammo preferences. The targets pictured are from this year 3-14-2020 at 50 yards.

I have killed turkey with this setup out to 80 yards.

I read some reviews about this choke and wanted to try it. Being that turkey season was in full swing, they were a little hard to find ” on the shelf “. Searching on line, I found a store in my general area that had some in stock the model indicated ” beretta/bennelli”.

After I picked up the choke, I discovered that it would not fit my Beretta extreme II. Now if a guy owns a few different Beretta’s, he might know the difference. I only own the extreme II, and as my x-wife would say ; ” I’m not always a deep thinker ” so did not realize that different models required different chokes.

Like I said, the choke was identified as ” beretta/bennelli “. I did manage to return the choke to the store for a refund. I contacted Primos by email to explain the problem, I also explained that I had wasted 3 hours of my time going to pick up the wrong choke.

I suggested that they should correct their labelling or have their distributors specify which guns their choke will fit. ” Bubba ” from Primos replied, ” yeah we have chokes for the extreme II “. That was it, no ” sorry that you wasted 3 hours of your time.

“. No ” thanks for the suggestion and we’ll look into the problem. ” or anything. My follow up email was a bit more “direct but polite “. It remains unanswered. I realize that Primos has a lot of products on the market.

Seeing their lack of follow up, I’ll be a bit more cautious before trying their other products. Is the ” JellyHead ” a good choke ?. I don’t know, I never got a chance to try it. Now I’m not sure that I’ll bother ordering one for my extreme II.

Tried and true. My daughter took her fourth turkey with a Remington 870 20ga 2 3/4” 4 shot at 32 yards very impressive the pattern this choke holds at that distance. Other chokes I could only pattern to 25 yards for good clean killing patterns Jelly Head patterned well to 35 and could have been farther.

With my daughters closer is always better. Take the time to call them in close even if it takes another day. No better way to spend time than in the woods.

I used this jacket quite a bit last upland season and look forward to using it more this year. I’ve taken it through some super nasty brush and the material is pretty tough, it doesn’t show any signs of wear at all.

It has just the right amount of stretch so it doesn’t restrict movement and doesn’t add a ton of bulk so shouldering my shotgun feels totally natural. While the material doesn’t breath all that well, the massive pit zips really help to dump heat and prevent me from needing to shed a layer and take off my hunting vest to do so.

Those pit zips really add to the versatility of the jacket. I used it during some sub 20 degree, blowing snow weather and it’s just the right amount of weather protection for active hunting. It wouldn’t keep me warm in those conditions while sitting but while out busting brush on my favorite hillside I’ve never had a better jacket.

The sleeve design around the wrists is a little different on this jacket than other jackets I’ve used but I found it works really well for unrestricted movement when shouldering a gun as the cuffs don’t bind.

It also makes it nice for use with gloves. I have long arms and this sleeve design still works for me, even in a size Medium (I’m 6’1″ 180 lbs. ). If you have short arms it might cause an issue but for most people I think you’ll really like the design.

I was nervous about it but have found I really like how they function.

Been waiting a while for this gem of a pant to come around. I felt like the regular De Havilland pant was far too heavy for most of my archery season outings so I jumped at the opportunity for the lite version.

Love the knee pad sleeve option (didn’t know it had it, but put in my Sitka knee pads with ease), mesh pockets and deep cargo pockets. My ONLY reason for a 4 star instead of 5 is the 1970’s bell bottom lower leg.

IMHO, it’s bad enough to need a redesign. Had my wife trim down the lower leg to fit more like a straight leg/slightly tapered pant and now I’m more stoked to wear them without the ‘swish-swish’ noise of the lower leg while in the mountains.

Oh, and the tall is legit TALL!.

Use this jacket EVERY time I went grouse hunting and pheasant hunting this past fall. I absolutely love it. I have long arms, and this coat actually covers the backs of my hands, to keep brush from ripping them up.

It is perfect on its own on warm days and great for layering on cold days. The zippered pockets are in all the right places and it fits well. No more gun getting hooked on my coat when trying to take a quick shot in the woods.

And after an entire season afield, it is in perfect shape. No rips, tears, or holes. Totally worth the money.

I have owned this choke tube in 12 gauge for my Remington 870. I have hunted with this for 12 years or so, and it patterns very well for a “budget” choke tube. I have had the opportunity for 6 shots in those 12 years, and it has meant the demise of 6 gobblers.

They have dropped right where I shot them on all six. The ranges have varied from 25 yards all the way out to 60 yards. I have shot several different brands of ammo; I am not picky and neither is this choke tube.

I have killed birds with three different ammo types (Remington Nitro Turkey in #4, Winchester Double X in #5, and Hevi-Shot #4, all 3″). I am planning on purchasing a 20 gauge for my wife to turkey hunt with, and this choke will be on it.

Could not get an even pattern with factory x full non ported choke in my mossberg 835 24 in Turkey barrel, shot rem. nitro, federal,Winchester double x , best pattern was 83 in a 10in. cir. 14 in the vitals from 3in.

Num. 5 Winchester double x at measured 30 yards. With the tight wad same shell and range 96 in a 10in. cir and 27 in the vitals and a real even spread, even the federals which were really bad with factory choke put 93 in a 10in.

cir. And 19 in the vitals. The tight wad was the only choke I could find where I live, didn’t think it was going to make much of a difference but it even’d out the spread and doubled number in the vitals, very happy with the results.

These are the best choke on the market, especially if you use LongBeard XR shells!!! I have a Tight Wad choke for: a 12 ga Remington 870, a 12 ga Stoeger m3500, and a 20 ga Remington 870 youth. Both 12s are putting about 200 pellets in a 10 circle at 45 yards (LBXR 3.

5 #5). The 20 ga puts 170ish in the same circle at 35 yards (LBXR 3 #6). Ive included pictures of all 3 shotguns patterns. For $15-$20 you cant beat this choke! Ive been telling everyone to get one.

My husband loves it! He’s a welder and can’t wear his gold wedding band while working. Your ring filled the bill to keep him safe and still wear a wedding band. He says it’s so comfortable that he forgets it on his finger! An extra advantage was to find a NWTF Mossy Oak Obsession Camo Ring, he’s a hunter, trapper and all things outdoors and collects wild turkey memorabilia!.

I bought this for my son. We hunt and fish but he is also a farmer. He works on tractors as well. I feel better knowing he is ok while working and playing. This is a nice quality product. He loves his ring and continues to wear it daily.

I’ve been lucky enough to be able to hunt from 4 different Banks Outdoor blinds the last 8 years on my property and never plan on building another wooden box blind! You might be able to build a wooden box blind cheaper, but if a tree falls on that wood box blind or if high winds blow it over those blinds turn to firewood quickly.

If a tree falls on your Banks blind and you remove it and make sure the sun can hit the blind after it will take shape again and be fine. I know first hand! If high winds come through and blow your Banks blind over you might have to purchase a new window or two (not too expensive) and maybe build a new set of stairs, but everything will be fine…is there any other blinds out there that can hold up to a tree falling on top of it or getting blown over by high winds?? I doubt it.

Redneck blinds are made of tin. Maverick and booner blinds won’t hold up. Muddy blinds we’ll just read some reviews as you’ll see everyone complain about how cheap they are and how bad they leak water and not to mention them being a total loss after getting blown over.

Buy a Banks blind and you will not regret it! Tip-pound a fence post in the ground on each corner post and wrap wire around to help secure it down if you have it set up in windy areas as I haven’t had any issues since doing that and mine are setup in open areas where the wind can get nasty! Tip+2-buy the curtains for them! Curtains have camo on one side and black on the other.

The windows that will be directly behind you should have the black side of curtain showing to hide all your movement and wear a black top and face mask.

We purchased this blind last summer and now I am the envy of all my hunting friends. I am a large man (360 pounds) and although the blind is listed as a 4-man outfit, I would not recommend more than two hunters in it at a time.

My hunting friends killed three deer out of it last fall and they all thought it was ideal in every way. I also recommend buying the deck plate and insulation kit and floor material with it. With this material, the sound level from inside is negligible.

The windows and door are built for quietness. Need I say, I love my Stump 4!.

There are no instructions included with this blind on how to elevate and raise it. I watched a vendors Youtube video on how to raise this blind, followed every single step and by running a tow rope through the inside of the blind I ended up breaking a window.

So for a blind that I’m going to have to get a neighbor with a crane boom to lift and now I have to pay for a cheaply made window replacement. I’d recommend building your own or a different brand for a cheaper price.

For the money, I I could of built a better blind. You’d expect at least having instructions for installing the door handle.
