20 Best Shampoo For Gray Hair Turning Yellow (2023 Updated)

My first violet shampoo and, sadly, not a great success. It lathers beautifully and has a pleasant fragrance but I find it exceptionally drying. My hair’s like straw after use and I need a deeply moisturising conditioner.

I don’t notice any brightening effects, either. I tried battling on with it for a few months but have since moved on to a metal detox shampoo by another brand. I live in a very hard water area and, as I understand, metal deposits can yellow light/ greying hair.

It works better for me than the Phytoargent and, while I’m glad to have tried it and enjoy using other Phyto products, I will not be buying the Phytoargent shampoo again.

I get my had colored or touched up, depending on the color I choose, every four to six weeks. I spend what’s needed to keep my hair nice and healthy. As much as I want to love this shampoo, being a shampoo snob because of how much I spend to make it look good, I can not.

I have thick oily hair and this shampoo, so if using the conditioner with it, makes my hair oily in less than the next day. Knowing my hair is oily I only add conditioner to my tips and lightly us a leave in spray on top.

I love the smell it makes me think of my husband’s body wash but much lighter and when my hair is not oily I love the soft silkiness and how healthy it feels. I do recommend this brand and this shampoo not everyone has hair like mine.

I don’t wash my hair much do to the color I choose using this shampoo I have to wash it every other day. But this is my experience, give it a try it is a great product I just can’t commit to it. Oh and it does help your color last longer!!!.

This is by far my favorite shampoo!! My stylist only uses Lanza products in her salon so I thought I would see what the hype was about. The smell is incredible. Probably the best smelling shampoo and conditioner I have ever used.

Even the hair color doesn’t have a bad smell. I can always tell a difference when I use this and when I don’t. It makes my color last so much longer and keeps it looking fresh. I will literally scrape the bottle to get every drop out.

Definitely give this a chance and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

The first time I used this product my hair felt wonderful. The next 3x of using this product with the coordinating conditioner my hair follicles and scalp just felt irritated. My hair started feeling dry and flat.

So expensive but some reviews were great. Then before leaving this review I used the review bar to pull up the lowest rating, these people also seemed to have the same scalp and follicle issue of ouch and itchy.

Next time I know to look at ratings from the lowest as well. Money is a gift not to be wasted.

I haven’t changed anything in my hair care routine except this. The first time I used it, meh it did the job and made my hair a lot brighter. Mind you I only use this twice a month because purple shampoo is so harsh.

The second time I used this, HOLY DRYNESS. It literally sucked every bit of moisture out of my hair and turned my hair silver, which was fine, but I looked like a hag due to the frizz. I’ve never experienced such harshness from a product.

I’ve had to completely reset my hair by not putting any heat or this shampoo on my hair for a month. It ruined my hair for my graduation and I couldn’t be anymore disappointed in this product. Not to mention it doesn’t lather at all and I felt like I had to use a ton of it to clean my hair.

This product really does reverse brassy tones, but it isn’t worth sucking all the moisture out of your hair.

I actually purchase this shampoo in the 33. 8 fl oz version because it is THAT GOOD. It lasts 6-8 months minimum for me, used 2-3 times a week. I have tried every other purple shampoo out there, but keep going back to this one.

My hair is very platinum/silver/gray (I am super picky with my color and absolutely HATE any warm, yellow, orange, brassy tones) so it requires a LOT of upkeep in between salon visits. This combats any yellow/brassy tones that start to peek through like no other, and always keeps my hair looking freshly bleached/toned and white like I prefer and love.

It does dry my hair out a bit, but combined with the Blondage purple conditioner and other conditioning treatments, my hair is always left looking and feeling amazing. P. S. Mix this/alternate with the Redken Color Extend Graydient shampoo and conditioner, and you have yourself a perfect recipe for beautifully platinum/white blonde hair.

I have gray hair, chin length, with areas of solid white. I’ve always been careful with using products that enhance the color. Gray hair that is not properly taken care of can turn yellow. I do get body perms every 12 to 14 weeks.

Till now I had only used a conditioner during the summer months when I’m in daily water fitness classes and gardening. After using Redken Graydiant once, I’m convinced that I need to use it bi-weekly or even weekly.

Rather than detract from the texture of gray hair, it accentuates the color and softens it. After applying in the shower, I comb through my hair to distribute it. So glad that I purchased it.

Ive been using this product for so many years, I do stray from it for the “promise” of the next great thing. but always end up back. Because my hair is normally difficult to work with, I generally shampoo 3 times a week, more often if in heavy odors/outdoors sweat & grime.

ect. The first thing I do once the hair is completely wet hair is to slightly wring out the excess water, apply working the shampoo through- let it sit for about 3 mins then rinse well. Wring out my hair as well as I can then apply the conditioner and again let that sit until Im about done with my shower; then rinse well.

For those with unruly hair, it does help to have your hair up & drying in a cotton Turbie Towel, seems to make mine more manageable. Once its out of the Turbie Towel I comb out and apply the Argan Oil all over, comb into place let air dry.

I cant say this is good for those who are not naturally silver, salt/pepper or those who bleach out their hair. your own stylist should let you know what to use. I do recommend to my grey/ salt & pepper clients that they can mix a small amount of the shampoo or conditioner to their favorite shampoo/conditioners so the color may not transfer but still helping remove some of the yellowing AG is woman owned, a nice line of products.

I have super dark brunette hair it’s almost black! So I get an ashy blonde balayage to compliment my hair. Of course after 6 weeks out of the salon is turns brassy, I bought this hoping it would make my hair look balanced again since it says it can also be used on brunette hair to combat brassy unbalanced hair.

OMG did it do the trick. I followed the directions and lathered twice, I didn’t use conditioner afterwards but after towel drying my hair used my leave-in conditioner and then blow dried it. It looks brand new, like I just left the salon and my hair no longer looks choppy and orange! Such a great buy it’s so cheap and perfect to prolong those costly salon visits! My hair is super soft not drying for me at all.

I have been using Violet Shampoo and Conditioner for a couple of years. My hair is very healthy and the colour is so natural. Pre-Covid I had blondish highlights in my hair. During Covid my hair is now predominately gray but the Violet products have kept it quite a beautiful shimmering gray.

Highly recommend this product for older hair.

This is the best purple shampoo Ive ever used. And the price is phenomenal compared to what I have paid in the past at a salon. Only teensy criticism is that the bottles came packed in packing peanuts which left a clingy white dust on the bottles which was annoyingly difficult to remove.

When the production of Silver Expressions was halted in previous years, I blew up your email, literally begging for this product to once again be available. For a short period of time I could once again find Silver Expressions.

I went to every store that carried the shampoo and conditioner and bought every single bottle! Nothing has worked for my hair since! I still receive compliments, BUT not like when I used Silver Expressions.

Really works whitening gray hair. Really dark purple in color. The smell is not perfume very light , pump works, the bottle came in a plastic bag. The only thing is it leaves a slight purple tinge of color in the hair.

It leaves hair soft and manageable.

I let my color grow out during Covid. My hairdresser said I have the thickest beautiful hair that he has ever cut and I should be a hair model. I love Silver Expressions Purple Shampoo. Couldnt live without it.

I really do like this shampoo. I have tried so many different silver shampoos and non were able to give me a result like this. I try it two different ways. When I just need a slight touch up on my blonde, I lather it and leave it in for 2-5 mins.

When I need a dramatic pull, I apply it when my hair is dry and leave it in for 5 mins before I lather and wash it out. Does leave a little purple behind for a couple days, but comes out easily. I find that the colour consistency in this shampoo is thinker than a lot of others and it lasts me quite a while even though I have longer hair.

A little bit pricy but in my opinion, worth it!.

My hair: Extremely fine, pretty thin, natural level 8 blonde with ends bleached to platinum consistently over several years. How I use this: The first time I used it, I just used the product by itself, but it has an extremely thick and almost “dry” texture that made it very difficult to work through my hair.

I also found that, when used on its own, it did not make my hair feel soft or hydrated afterward. Now I use it by mixing it with my regular conditioner, Fanola Fiber Fix, which has a much more liquidy texture.

I literally just grab a glob of Fanola in my hand and then add a dollop of this, I just eyeball it and don’t measure, then I mix it up in my hand and apply it to the ends of my hair and let some of it reach the top of my head to tone that part, but I don’t rub it in to my scalp.

I let it sit while I continue showering, roughly 10 minutes, but I don’t time it. I have at one point let it sit for much longer, closer to 45 minutes, but I didn’t notice a significant difference when compared to 10 minutes.

Product preferences: I prefer a product with STRONG toning capabilities. I like my hair to be noticeably different in tone after I use a product. Often, when people panic and claim that a product turned their hair “purple”, I actually would describe their tone as more “ashy/silver”, and that is what I am looking for.

This product is one of the only non-lifting toning products that consistently gives me great results color wise. Yes, my hair looks slightly overtoned after I use it, but that is what I WANT. Cons: I think there may be something in this product that is irritating my skin.

I don’t intentionally apply this to my scalp, but since I started using this regularly, I have been getting persistent itching on the skin on the back of my head/neck. It is possible that something else is causing this, which is why I only took off one star, but I haven’t changed anything else in my hair routine, so I can’t say for sure, which is why I still “recommend” it.

I’ve tried quite a few products, including professional toner, for my blonde hair and this is by far my favorite. Previously my most effective method was putting other brands’ purple shampoo on my blonde hair and leave it on for an hour and still didn’t love the results.

This Amika mask is much more potent. I put it on dry hair for 15 minutes and it worked great, almost too great. I have very fine thin blonde bleached hair and tape in extensions and it turned a few of my extensions light purple because they’re highly processed hair.

It wasn’t terrible and dry shampoo covered up the lavender until it evened out with a couple shampoos. So now I leave it on my roots for 15 minutes and on the ends of my hair for 5 minutes and it does a much better job than I could achieve with my previous 1 hour purple shampoo method.

And even though it is moisturizing, it doesn’t leave my fine/thin hair too flat. Very highly recommend.

I have tried an expensive purple shampoo that didn’t do a job at all, until I found this mask. I came out of salon with few yellow spots up front that made think it’s overprocessed or burnt. In turned out overprocessed and I needed desperate fix.

I got this mask based on reviews and I wanted to try it for myself. It truly made a huge difference and I’ve only used it 4 times (once a week for 4 week). Last few times I’ve focused on front area and kept it slightly longer.

Not much elsewhere as may not been needed. Wow, what a difference and my highlights just stands out. Just a week ago I decided to layer it. Mask is not drying like other products but I’ve felt it made my hair little more fragile.

At least what it seems like it but I make sure to use my Olaplex Products (shampoo, conditioner, leave in etc. ). That’s why I focused on needed area and then all over for little less time. This product is worth $$ and your hair will shine, glow and lighten up (no purple streaks).

So to try and make this as short as possible. I wished it was scented because I’m not fond of the smell of it, but if it’s saving my hair from entirely falling out.

I can deal with the smell as it’s not strong AT ALL. But I love scented everything. So if you don’t want to make your brown hair go gray, this stuff won’t as long as you don’t use the first box or treatment.

I will continue to use all of everything as I have been because I have no complaints other than happiness from this product.

I’m not exactly sure why I received this product, in my questionnaire thing I gave the answer that I barely have any grey. Nevertheless, I still tested the product. The color lightening serum (the first step) didn’t have that bad of an odor like most products of the sort do, which was good.

It didn’t remove all of the color from my hair but it did lighten it. So it I guess did it’s job for the most part. As for the charcoal shampoo and conditioner… I absolutely hate it. It leaves my hair feeling disgusting.

Like I haven’t washed it in weeks. And no matter how well I rinse my hair out, I still get black debris/stains on my fingers if I run my hands through my hair. It’s totally gross. The other two products you’re supposed to use after that… I’m not too sure how good or bad they work since like I said, I don’t have much grey.

They seemed to leave my hair feeling ok for the most part despite how gross my hair feels after using the charcoal shampoo and conditioner. I’ve been told that grey hair is more coarse than when your hair had its color so maybe the shampoo and conditioner would react differently if I had a full head of grey.

I’m not too sure. That’s all I have to say about that.

I used and also shared the Pantene Generation Beauty Silver and Glowing Shampoo, reason I shared with my family member is because she had white/silver hair and I natural blonde brown hair. After I used it I didn’t notice a difference at all except my hair was soft and smooth after blow drying it.

I didn’t notice a difference in color or anything else for that matter. That’s why I gave only four stars for this shampoo. But my family member loved this shampoo, she said the color was so vibrate and beautiful when she poured it into her hand.

After washing her hair and fixing it, this shampoo definitely helped with the yellow/brassiness in her hair. Her hair was very smooth and soft and looked very healthy. In fact she was told by several people how beautiful her white hair was.

She said she will definitely buy this product.

Smells like, well… shampoo. Nothing offensive or overwhelming about the scent. Washes just fine, but what shampoo with sulfates doesn’t? I wash my hair maybe twice a week, as more than that is serious overkill; I can’t be the only one with a WFH job these days, so doing my hair in anything other than a 30 second bun is asking a bit much.

I will say I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t fully strip my hair, as most sulfate laden shampoos tend to do, so that was cool. Not sure how much, if any, difference the purple coloring did for my blonde hair….

I’ll address the reason this loses one star at the beginning, since it may not be a factor to you. I no longer purchase items that contain sodium laureth sulfate, or SLS, although I’ve never had an adverse reaction.

Just so many good options that don’t contain this ingredient. If SLS isn’t something you avoid, this shampoo (and the conditioner) could certainly be a five-star product. This shampoo is throughly, intensely purple, like the best salon-quality toning shampoos.

It doesn’t have the nourishing feel of some of the high-end shampoos, though it also doesn’t leave my hair feeling stripped. The color is a great balancing for my medium-light blonde hair, getting rid if any brassiness without adding any unwanted undertones.

Overall, in spite of the SLS, I’m very happy with this product!.

Knew the product works, as my hairdresser uses it on me. It really does reduce the yellowing, gives a lovely silvery grey hue, and also shine. The best shampoo for grey hair that I have found.

I recently dyed my hair (from light strawberry blonde to copper auburn) and since reds are difficult to keep vivid in color, I figured I’d have to touch up my color some. However, first I wanted to try the L’oreal Purple shampoo and conditioner first since I’d read so many great reviews about it.

My hair had become a bit of a dull, lifeless, and dry looking mess. Well, I used the purple shampoo and noticed my hair felt like softness had been added in and decided to top off the rinsed out shampoo with some purple conditioner.

I let the conditioner sit in my hair for 3 minutes, rinsed, and turban toweled my hair. I combed my wettish hair and noticed the comb pulled right through with no knots forming. My hair felt like it had detangler in it it was so smooth.

I then blow dried my hair as I brushed it and my hair felt so silky. After my hair was completely dried I noticed it just looked shinier and the color stood out a bit more. I really love this product and will always keep it on hand for using once per week.

O. M. G! I can’t believe how good this purple shampoo works! It’s only 3 dollars and some change, and it compares to, and in my opinion, works better than some professional brands! The deep violet color really helps drive out icky yellow and orange color.

I’ve been platinum blonde for nearly 12 years of my life, and I’ve used MANY purple shampoos. This one is absolutely amazing! I was skeptical at first with it being a drugstore brand and being so cheap, but I was definitely, happily surprised! I can’t always afford brands like Redken, Tigi, or others that cost 10 times what this does, so this is pretty much my go-to purple shampoo.

This and Shimmer Lights are my favorite!.
