20 Best Shampoo For Dogs With Skin Allergies (2023 Updated)

My dog suddenly developed environmental allergies this fall, and it has been a non-stop battle with constant itching and flaky skin since. Our vet recommended we give him medicated baths 2 times a week, but those only provided temporary relief; the other days, he was right back to itching.

It got so bad that he gave himself bald spots down his side and on his chest, and his hair overall was just drier and thinner. He’s always had thick, shiny hair, so the change was quite drastic. Even Benadryl did nothing for his itching.

I’ve tried just about everything at this point, and we finally have his itching under control! In addition to his twice weekly medicated baths, I now use this spray after his baths and in between baths, and it has helped return so much moisture and life back to his coat and skin.

I really make sure to thoroughly spray him all over, rub the spray throughout his coat, and then go through his coat with a slicker brush to make sure it’s distributed. If I apply it to his dry coat, it is a little bit greasy feeling, but not to the point where it transfers onto furniture or feels gross to touch.

Overall, I’ve seen a drastic decrease in itching, and his coat and skin feel much better. All that said, I am doing other things which may also be helping. As I said, he gets medicated baths twice a week, and I also supplement his food with fish oil and Zesty Paws Aller-Immune bites.

I think these products have all been working in conjunction to really help stop this awful flare up.

My dogs and I live in the desert which means dry fur year round. I wanted a leave-in conditioner that would help keep their skin and coats healthy plus dandruff and static free. THis product does seem to condition their coats, we’ve had less dryness and almost no static, but they are STICKY for the first 24 hours after I put it on.

Then the stickiness gets on my hands (and the sofa!) when I pet them. Maybe it’s because my dogs all have short double coats, but it’s just unpleasant to cuddle the girls until it soaks in (or rubs off?).

The smell is nice, but not overpowering, my super allergic dogs don’t seem to itch with this and like I said, their coats are better. If only they weren’t sticky after use. I won’t be purchasing this again.

I have a pitbull and she loves to lick her paws to the point she makes them raw. I spray this on her paws and she stops right away, hopefully this will break her nasty habit and help her itchy paws in the long run.

She had a spot on her inner back leg about the size of a quarter which was raw and scabbing. Ater the second day of usage the scabbing was going away and there was no redness. I wish I had before and after photos.

I worked a pet store as my first job and would recommend bitter apple seeing that this didn’t exist but now I’m an advocate of this stuff! You get more in the bottle and you don’t pay as much, it is more natural and it shows results! I will absolutely make sure to recommend this to anyone who’s dog has skin allergies (also if your dog food contains chicken, it is a growing allergy and could be linked to their skin allergies! Maybe switch the food to higher grade and chicken free! Make sure there’s no trace of chicken in the ingredients).

I do not recommend this product for any creature. It wreaks of artificial vanilla. Immediately after bathing the dog I went and washed my hands and it’s lingering everywhere. I can’t imagine how he feels.

My dog has skin and other allergies, so I thought I would try this shampoo after the brand I had been using for years was discontinued. I was happy that this shampoo seemed to work just fine, without any repercussions.

I was about to reorder it when I saw the current pricing. How does a 16 oz bottle go from $4. 42 in March, 2020 to $16. 49 in October, 2020?! Even if it were on some sort of “special” earlier in the year (it was not noted as such), quadruple the price makes no sense.

When youre in the bath its a very strong smell which is great for a stinky dog. At my salon i use this on a certain stinky girl every time she comes in. I like the smell however its very interesting, may not be a smell for all.

Its much better of an odor reducer than natures miracle (the other brand we use for odor removing at my salon) just make sure you really lather in the shampoo and use a lot of it for it to really do its job.

If youve got a very stinky baby you may need to lather a couple of times. Still my go to though :).

Quick tip: Remember to take off the seal under the cap *before* you start washing your dog. I had already gotten mine wet before I realized it was there, and I was unable to remove it by hand. After all previous baths Daisy would be itching for about 24 hours. This shampoo is obviously more gentle leaving Daisy comfortable in her very sensitive skin.

Very effective! We was prescribed the shampoo plus apoquel? Tablets which had bad side effects we stopped using the tablets and only use the shampoo and it has worked a treat. My dog no longer has raw red wounds and inflammation visible and has stopped itching.

This is cheaper and more effective than tablets, I would say people try this first before they give their pet any medication.

The only reason I deducted a star from this awesome shampoo is because of packaging. There is no seal over the bottle opening, before the cap is placed on the bottle. What happens? Of course, it leaks.

When I received my package, which was a bubble-lined envelope, there was approximately one inch of shampoo that had leaked out of the cap that had loosened, and was all over the bottle and the inside of the envelope.

This is such an easy fix- just seal the bottles with a removable tab before shipping. Otherwise, this shampoo is GREAT. I’ll be ordering more. The natural ingredients are fantastic, and it smells amazing- best of any I’ve tried, which is a lot.

I can’t specifically pick out the smell of coconut or orange, they just combine together to create a beautiful scent that is not overwhelming. I love it. The shampoo itself is great. Some splashed directly in to my eye as I was bathing my Labrador Retriever, and it didn’t burn at all- which is great.

My dog didn’t mind having her face and ears lathered either. Speaking of lather, it first appeared this shampoo didn’t lather quite as well as I like, but I’ve found this to be the case with a lot of natural shampoos, so I wasn’t concerned.

Been using this product on our mini Australian Shepard and I happy with the results. The only downfall is that it doesn’t have the best smell according to my kids.

Only shampoo that worked for my beagle with allergies. It should have never been discontinued by the FDA. The government knows how to screw up a good thing. The dogs weren’t drinking the shampoo. They were given baths with the medicated shampoo that did work.

First time user. Petco employee recommended this as the usual shampoo was out of stock. The fragrance is mild and inoffensive. This shampoo left the Hovawart with dry, tangled fur. Shampoo is very dilute and it took a lot to make suds.

It runs all over the dog like water. This, by far, is the nastiest shampoo I have ever used. When she was wet, I could feel the “overly dry” feeling to her coat, as if all of the natural oils had been stripped.

Since 1974, I have been bathing and grooming Golden Retrievers, Cairn Terriers, and now my Hovawart for 9 years. All had long coats. I know how to bathe dogs. I start by brushing the dog with the proper rake-style comb.

I remove all tangles prior to washing and cut out any mats, if needed. I clean her ears. After she is dried, I brush out all of the fur to smooth the coat. Trim her nails and grind to smooth. As I blew her dry with the Metro Dryer, the undercoat began to knot and tangle.

I brushed as I blew, but her coat is tangled, dry and unmanageable. Almost sticky, despite complete rinsing. As for shiny? Not at all. It’s dull, hard and lacks shine. I have never needed to condition my dog’s fur after washing before.

If you choose to use this shampoo, buy a conditioner with it. I know a long hair coat very well and would not recommend this to anyone with a long coat dog.

I used this shampoo in my schnauzer for over 4 years. Great scent and amazing for detangling. super thick and great to spread. I ordered a replacement last week and it all changed. Its almost pure water.

We used to have a Maltese who itched with every “gentle” dog shampoo we tried until Four Paws Tearless Puppy Shampoo. It’s very gentle on the skin, has a very light scent, and doesn’t irritate eyes should any get into it.

Since those many years ago we’ve used only this on our dogs and even take it to the groomer for them to use. Just gave one bottle to a friend whose dog scratched after every bath. She was amazed at the difference.

My puppy has atopic skin allergies and we are treating it with Benadryl and the Benadryl seemed to help I purchased the BB itch spray after seeing reviews on how much it helped others skin integrity and honestly it made it way worse.

After the Benadryl dose he wasn’t itching at all. His fur is red, blotchy and dry and figured with Avocado oil it should hydrate it. Nopppeee he started to itch like crazy and I have like 3 hrs left for his next dose.

If ur thinking this will help moisturize their skin or soften it think again. The only relief mine got was the coldness of the spray… continuing on with my search to help his skin clear up and let him feel some relief… also if ur pup has skin allergies from ragweed, ryegrass or pollen Benadryl works amazing just be careful on the dose and either wash w/a moisturizing shampoo or use wipes all over (in paws too) every time he is exposed to those elements.

Too bad I couldn’t use it’s a 10 on him lol bc when I go blonde it makes my hair feel so soft when it should feel like straw….

We have three shampoos we use for our rescues, two which we purchase from the Vet when needed. Burt’s Bees oatmeal shampoo has been our go to over the counter shampoo for decades now. One of our rescues is like our old Lab was, pollen comes down thick enough to write your name on the car and the dog’s coat dries out.

With the dry coat, shedding is unbelievable, even in a short hair dog. Then the constant scratching begins. With this oatmeal shampoo, it takes care of both issues, scratching stops and the shedding goes back to normal.

This is a great natural dog shampoo that i use on my dog regularly. I used to use a lot of product, like a quarter of the bottle every time I bathed my fur baby. I was told from my groomers to create a foam with some water and soap in a bottle and it makes the product lather better and uses so much less! My fur baby suffers from itchy skin and this shampoo seems to temporarily relieve that! I enjoy using this on my dog! This shampoo did not disappoint and I am happy with the results Im getting.

I also like that Burt Bees doesn’t have toxic chemicals in they’re products which is what lead me to this purchase. I can often find it at Marshalls for a good price. It’s a bit pricey at the pet stores but not outrageously so.

But so worth the money in my opinion.

Smell is nice, however would prefer a slightly more lasting fragrance. It lathers very well so you don’t have to use too much at once, and does a good job removing dirt from my dog’s white coat. Washed out easily.

Used it on my 11 year old long haired St. Bernard and love it. His white hair on the neck under his chin is reddish from being wet. After a bath with Stinky Dog the reddishness is gone. He smells nice.

His hair is silky. Can’t stop hugging him. For years I’m trying to replace Doggy Dip by Origins that was discontinued. Stinky Dog is the best alternative so far. 4 stars just because it isn’t equal to Origins product (although much cheaper!).
