20 Best Shampoo Bar Fine Hair (2023 Updated)

I’ve been using this shampoo for about 2 years now, and I haven’t bought a bottle of shampoo since. I got into solid shampoo and conditioner originally through my interest in clean beauty and refillable beauty products, and while I also do care about the environmental impact.

I honestly just also hated the eye sore of having my vanity cluttered with cheap plastic stuff. I got tired of my bathroom also being full of clunky plastic bottles that made my home look more like a drug store shelf than an actual home.

I loved the idea of how small and out of plain sight these bars are, and how they don’t fill my bathroom with random brand logos. But as I started actually using them, not only did my hair become less greasy and more bouncy, but I spend so little money on shampoo and conditioner now.

In two years, I just got my third shampoo bar, and my conditioner bar is still going on strong. My advice if you want to make these last as long as my did is make sure to get a storage tray for them or use a soap dish you have at home — if you let them soak in water and not dry them properly, they’re gonna get smaller.

The brand makes (compostable) storage trays which are definitely worth the money as it keeps the bars from shrinking. I have dry hair, so minty hair care products are usually made for oilier scalps and are sadly not great for me despite my love of the smell, but this has that great peppermint smell while still feeling more buttery and lotiony in my hair than my old shampoo.

Yes, this lathers up — it’s a marketing myth that sulfates are bad for your hair and sadly the natural beauty world (as much as I love natural products) is often full of anti-science misinformation that preys on consumers’ lack of knowledge.

Sulfates are fine for the vast majority and the sulfate in this bar is milder and more gentle than your typical SLS. I’m not a big review writer, but I felt so compelled to say how much I like this brand — I will never buy a plastic bottle shampoo or conditioner again, the products are legit, and they are significantly cheaper than a drug store routine after a few months of use.

They also have a generous rewards program for people who order direct from their website. As long as they keep making them I will remain a lifelong customer.

I have used St Clements Shampoo Bar for over a year now and have since then switched to Ethique conditioner as well. I hope to leave some helpful thoughts on this bar as I have gotten to know it well over the past year.

PROS: The sustainability, the results, the smell- there are so many good things I can say about this product. I have pretty thin hair. I originally switched to this bar because the shampoo I purchased at the grocery store was causing my hair to fall out.

I decided I wanted to go natural to eliminate the chances of that ever happening again. I originally purchased this bar on Amazon simply because of its natural ingredients- without knowing anything about the Ethique company itself.

Once I tried the bar and learned more about the values of the company, I was hooked. This is currently the only shampoo bar I have tried and could see myself venturing into other shampoo bars from Ethique in the future, but either way I have definitely found a soap company I will stay with.

The bar helps my hair feel lighter, has allowed me to go an extra day in between washes, and is just as easy to use as liquid shampoo (once you get the hang of it). I also appreciate their value on sustainability and being kind to the environment.

After my initial order on Amazon, I have ordered directly from Ethique to receive a plastic-free shipment. That alone is 100% worth the few extra dollars for shipping. Plus, the free sample size product they give you usually equates to the cost of shipping anyways and is a great gateway to trying other products from Ethique.

CONS: Product-wise I don’t have many bad things to say about this bar, but I did dock one star for one main reason: lifetime. I love this bar so much that I don’t mind paying more for Ethique products.

I do not, however, agree that the price of this shampoo bar is comparable to a bottle of “normal” shampoo at the grocery store based on its lifetime. My bars last between a month and half to two months.

The first bar I bought I used incorrectly (I made suds and then washed) and have since then learned how to use the bar correctly. The month and half time average is based on the bars I used correctly.

This also correlates to storage. I live in a pretty low humidity climate- its really dry here. I store my bar on soap saver pad on a metal-bar shower shelf and when I leave the shower I make sure to leave the shower doors open and the bathroom fan on for a while after I’m done.

I find that the bar still remains really soft in between washes, and often breaks down while in use. This results in me going through the bar a lot quicker, since large clumps pull off the bar into my hair.

I did not have this problem with the first few bars I used, but it has since been common in my past few purchases. If there are any recommendations from people who have experienced this on how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it! I hope this gives you helpful insight on a great product from an even better company.

I think this bar worked well for my hair. I wash my hair just about every day. I’d like to shake that habit, but I just don’t feel clean unless I wash my hair too. I like the scent and generally the way my hair feels with it.

After a few uses, I did notice that my hair felt a little dry so I started using the Guardian conditioner as well some days for the hydration and to avoid tangles. (I find running my fingers through my hair before showering also helps.

) After about 5 weeks, when the bar was about 1/3 or 1/4 the size, it started breaking. I couldn’t use the little pieces so I squeezed them back together then plastered it to the side of the conditioner bar.

I know that’s not a great option for people who use conditioner as a leave in conditioner, or don’t like getting shampoo on their ends and conditioner in their roots. There is a little mixing, but it’s not that bad and probably added a little more of the hydration that I needed.

Plastering it to the next bar of shampoo could also work. I just wasn’t expecting it to happen that early and didn’t have another shampoo bar at the time. I’m generally satisfied, but I’m trying Mintasy next to see if it’s a little more hydrating.

I might come back to this one or switch every now and then. I think it is cost effective, especially if you smoosh it to another bar to use every bit of it. Definitely put it in a dish that drains water so it’s dry between uses.

The only other thing I’d suggest is to not get these these bars too far in advance. I didn’t notice a lingering scent in my hair, but the box itself does seem to emit scents from the oils.

Update on this review: I reached out to the company about palm oil being in their ingredients, and they were not only forthcoming, but also stated they were actively investigating and working towards eliminating palm oil from the ingredients as provided from their suppliers.

For now, this was the company’s statement: “Our bars are not made directly with palm oil or palm oil derivatives, however, some of our ingredients may periodically contain palm oil derivatives. ” I had high hopes with this shampoo bar, but it just didn’t cater to my wild n’ crazy hair that tangles/mats easily.

I really liked the citrusy smell of the shampoo bar, though, and it stayed on my hair during a full and active day/schedule. (Sometimes with the other bars, they would smell really pleasant, but the scent would fade pretty fast, leaving hair kinda stinky by day’s end.

) And, while it didn’t feel as gunky/rubbery on my hair, it unfortunately didn’t have the same itch-reduction/cleansing feeling as some of the other shampoo bars I tried. It does have a shape that’s easier to use on hair.

it’s like a teardrop but with an angle. I’m kinda clumsy, so this felt less like an accident waiting to happen when I used it on my hair. Or dropped it for the tenth time on my foot, more like. (I just read on the website that they design their soaps as well with the same intention.

) I couldn’t find much about their company and manufacturing practices aside from the fact that they strive to cut down on single-use plastics. All their packaging is recyclable and/or compostable (including the shipping packaging) and HiBar uses plant-based inks.

The website also states that their products are free of “soaps, sulfates, phthalates, silicones, or parabens” and cruelty free as well. Not all of their products are vegan, but the Volumize shampoo bar is, according to the website’s FAQs.

And all their products are biodegradable.

I’m so impressed with the Hive Bar. This is the first bar shampoo I’ve tried, and I had all of the same concerns everyone else does — will the bar last as long as traditional shampoo or will I have to keep buying new bars was more often? Does it even clean your hair that well? I waited a while to post a review because I wanted to find the answers to these questions.

I bought a shampoo bar and conditioner set in April 2021. I just finished with the bar and still have a while to go with the conditioner bar. I wash my hair about 3 times a week, and my husband would use the bar occasionally (maybe once or twice a week).

I keep my bars on the window ledge in the shower, which doesn’t receive any direct water. I replaced the shampoo with Hive’s blue Moisturize shampoo bar. I found that the green Maintain bar lathered up much much better, and I prefer it to the blue Moisturize bar.

With liquid shampoo, my routine was always to wash twice to get a good lather, but I never had to do that with the green Maintain bar. I was honestly surprised that it would be better than traditional shampoo in that way! It is true that the conditioner bar and shampoo bar are both green, but I never had trouble telling them apart because the conditioner bar is more “shiny” and the shampoo bar is more “matte”.

Plus, I just keep the shampoo on the left and the conditioner on the right, so it wasn’t really difficult to keep them apart. I highly recommend the Hive bar (especially the green Maintain bar!).

I have lots of hair, but it’s fine, colored hair, most products look too greasy in my hair. This conditioner and shampoo didn’t do that. Cleaned well, didn’t dry my hair, gave it nice volume, helped my sensitive scalp You do have to lather it for a little while between your hands to get good amount out.

Main thing I like about this: environmentally friendly! I live on Hawaii Island. And what many people coming here on vacation don’t know – is that we don’t have recycling program for any plastic (besides water bottles).

Everything else plastic goes straight to our landfill. You can imagine that we have thousands of tourists visiting every day. And all have their shampoos and sunscreens and other staff, and when they leave, they throw it all in trash (including ourselves -the locals have to do same, because no recycling option).

So, again all of that plastic (tens of thousands bottles a day) goes into our landfill. We are the island – it’s not that big. Our transfer stations are overfilled. This is the sad really of Hawaii. Our old landfills literally melt and fall into the ocean.

There are two old landfills South and North: the cliffs filled of trash, slowly break of and fall into the ocean. It is truly a crisis! Discovering this product gave me hope. I switched everything at home to bars (no plastic bottles): shampoo and conditioner; my kitchen soap (by the way, it would be great if HiBar starts making dish soap too! so it’s all one stop shopping).

It just feels good to open my small box from HiBar with my bars and not a single piece of plastic along the way. Thank you! So, next time you travel to Hawaii, please bring your HiBar with you – save our Islands and our ocean! Aloha.

I used some shampoo bars by Lush over a decade ago and loved them, but eventually switched back to bottled shampoo. Years later, I wanted to try bars again and tried Ethique because the reviews are so good! My hair is pretty fine, but I have a LOT of it.

On bottled shampoo and conditioner, my hair is straight, but gets oily and I have to shampoo every day or I can’t stand how it looks and feels. With St. Clemens, I’m shampooing every other day unless I’m doing heavy sweaty workouts multiple days in a row.

And I learned my hair actually ISN’T totally straight? I have a little bit of wave on my own and I love it! I haven’t tried skipping conditioner on this bar because when I rinse, my hair feels like I would have a hard time getting a comb through it, but shorter hair (mine is shoulder length) would probably be perfectly fine.

This bar is also lasting a long time! I started using it about five months ago and it’s maybe half gone? Unfortunately it stays so soft in my shower I bet it would last longer if I was in a drier climate.

I live on the Gulf Coast in the US, so we’ve got high humidity. I feel like I have to handle this bar carefully or I’ll start losing the corners where the bar is softest. (I’ve got a bar of Pinkalicious on its way to me and I’m likely going to switch to that bar.

) I really like this bar and recommend it for oily hair, but I’d keep some conditioner on hand in case your hair is hard to detangle without it (I’m using Wonderbar). Ethique also has the nice little shower boxes, and if it weren’t for that, this bar wouldn’t be lasting nearly as long as it has.

I’m impressed and happy and would’ve given 5 stars if it wasn’t so soft and fragile in my shower, but I’m pretty sure it’s because of my climate.

It smells very refreshing, rustic and back to basics but foams beautifully and cleans my hair very nicely. Better for the environment too. Love it.

This shampoo did not work very well for my hair (medium length), it was not making enough foam and I was always left with a feeling of dirty scalp and hair while using it.

This is the first time I’ve tried a shampoo bar and until recently didn’t know they even existed. I love how it comes in a recyclable box and isn’t in some big bulky packaging. This size makes it perfect for an on the go alternative.

It fits easily in all the purses I own and would be super easy to fit in luggage or an overnight/gym bag. Great for people who travel alot, those who fly would benefit from this and no worry about it not being the correct size or in the correct bottle.

It’s a no hassle way to bring shampoo with you. We go camping all the time and this will definitely be what we bring with us for our hair washing needs. knit left my hair feeling fresh and clean, smooth and silky.

It is supposed to help strengthen weak hair and I think with a little more time to use this I’ll see some of those results as well. The only thing I wasn’t very pleased with was the smell. Thats my fault though, I know ginger is a very fragrant smell that I’m not crazy about.

The smell lingers and if you like the smell of ginger you will love this. This bar has been used for a few weeks now almost daily and it’s still about half the size it was brand new so you definitely get a lot of uses out of just 1 bar.

As soon as I finish this one I’ll be grabbing a different scent to try and I can’t wait to see what other choices they have.

This was my first time using or even hearing of, a Shampoo Bar and I’m in love with it already. I used Garnier Whole Blends Shampoo Bar for Dry, Damaged hair in Honey Treasures and O. M. G. the bar smells auh-mazing.

The bar is shaped like a teardrop and at first glance I thought to myself, there is no way this would be enough to use on my hair because I have long, thick, curly, dry, damaged hair. But I was wrong, this bar IS enough, even for hair like mine.

My whole experience with using this shampoo bar was amazing. The bar is enough to last for two months per the box, the bar absolutely delivers on foaminess, its creamy and lathers very well. The Honey Treasures bar scent again smelled to die for, restores dry, damaged hair.

The bar softens and protects the hair for a revitalized appearance and I love that it helps maintain the hair’s natural moisture. After using the shampoo bar, I followed up with Garnier Whole Blends conditioner for dry, damaged hair and my hair looked and felt amazing.

I am definitely going to be using this shampoo bar again and again and would highly recommend trying Garnier Whole Blends new Shampoo Bars.

I have used shampoo bars for around 15 years (Lush, Net Zero, Ecoroots). I LOVE the lather this bar delivers. But after about 2 weeks I noticed a crack starting at the narrow end which proceeded in about 3 days to split the bar completely in half.

Then because of the taper shape the ends broke off. At this point after about 3 weeks of use (my husband & myself) the bar is sitting in the dish in about 6 small pieces that make it an absolute pain to use on my long hair.

I never had this breakage problem with the other bars since they all were palm sized & ROUND (which also made them easier to use than the teardrop shape). Once they were well used & thinned they would break, but I could just squish them back together & keep using the bar until it was literally all used up.

My bar was stored in a soap dish completely out of the flow of water so it dried completely after use. My daughter is experiencing he same issue. So please fix the shape issue because loved the product initially.

Won’t buy more simply because of the cracking issue.

I have noticed an upcoming beauty trend. shampoo conditioner bars! I am yet to actually try these bars personally however I am very intrigued. I brought this particular bar from Woolworths, on clearance.

The price is cheaper than I had expected and definitely budget friendly. It smells nice and overall look is appealing. It is smaller than a regular soap bar so an average soap holder is way too big.

I got this because, finally, we have a more environmentally-friendly option at a large beauty retailer! However, I don’t really get on with this as well as I would have liked to. With the bar, it’s really difficult for me to feel if I’ve totally coated my hair in conditioner, and it doesn’t have as much slip as I would like.

I have wavy-to-curly hair and a lot of it, and it just never felt like I got enough product on my hair. I don’t really like the strong synthetic coconut smell either, which doesn’t linger thankfully (the shampoo has the same scent, but people seem to have only put this negative review on the shampoo and not the conditioner.

If you like the shampoo’s scent though, this is the same). I used a leave-in conditioner after this, which helped. My hair does feel soft today, but it didn’t feel as good as when I use my favorite conditioner that unfortunately comes with plastic packaging.

🙁 If you have very fine thin hair though, I do think you will love this. My hair did have a lot of body when it dried, and it does help your curl pattern come out. I just need a bit more weight to my hair than this.

I will finish this though. It didn’t destroy my hair or anything.

I purchased this in August and I’m just about out. If I would have stored it properly (away from water) it would have lasted even longer. The conditioner bar I’ve barely put a dent in. It will probably last me a year and a half or two years.

It does conditions well and you barely need any but that might be because I have fine hair. I love this shampoo bar. I can go longer in between washes without my hair feeling oily. I have fine medium length hair and live in humid Georgia.

It doesnt smell bad but it doesnt smell amazing either. The smell wasn’t the reason I bought it. The shampoo doesnt lather well but I dont feel it needs to. It still gets my hair clean. It does dry your hair out a little.

I think someone with an oily scalp would really enjoy this. I also use a lot of soap and concentrate the shampoo at my scalp to get it really clean so if I used less soap I’m sure it wouldn’t be to bad.

Purchasing this was an experiment to use less plastic and try out a shampoo bar. I thought I would hate it but I’ve been pleasantly surprised. I will continue buying this product.
