20 Best Sewing Machines For Quilting (2023 Updated)

I have been sewing for over 50 years. I have worked at a sewing factory for over 15 years. This machine compares to the factory machines I have used. I love it!!! I have used the even feed foot several times.

It works great on my purse and bag projects with Bosal Foam in them. It pieces quilts like a dream too. This is the first computer/electronic function machine I have owned. My other machines are older non-computer models.

Even though it is a bit heavy, it is portable enough I could take it to a quilt retreat. I would definitely recommend this machine.

I bought this machine and I love it. From quilting to making cushions with heavy layered upholstery fabric, Its a workhorse. Simple enough for beginner sewers and it will give you room to grow and learn.

The wide harp is one of its best assets. I was originally concerned because it didnt have the top loading bobbin, but the sideloading Bobbin is no big deal. You dont even need to move the extension table to load the bobbin, its cleverly designed I bought a basic Pfaff beginner machine and Quickly became hooked and needed a bigger, stronger machine.

I love that its analog and does one thing incredibly well: straight stitching. I kept the Pfaff for the occasional buttonhole and zigzag needs.

I bought this a few months ago because my embroidery stitch sewing machine kept choking on bulky items. I like making purses and tote bags so I needed a machine that could handle bulky sewing. I did not want to buy a full industrial machine.

I would call this a semi-industrial machine and it does what I need. The machine handled bulky denim and burlap without a whimper. It was very easy to learn to thread and adjust tensions. It would be a great machine for quilters.

I don’t quilt, but I’ll probably start using it to sew garments since I already finish seams with my serger. I can pull out the embroidery machine for button holes and any fancy stitches.

Returned after two days because it just wasn’t for me. I REALLY wanted to love this machine. I am making my first quilt and when it came time to put the two sides together, I realized I was going to need a more reliable machine with a bigger throat space because I am planning on just “tracing” the starburst design for the quilting and want to make sure the back will look nice.

I spent weeks pouring over reviews of machines and decided on this one. While waiting three weeks for the machine to arrive, I started sewing face masks. After sewing 99 masks on my old Singer Scholastic and my daughter’s Janome 11706 (Sewing Pretty with Hello Kitty), the machine arrived and I tried to sew masks 100-105 on this Brother so I could get use to it before tackling putting the quilt together.

The machine is easy to thread and get the tension adjusted. I had no problems with the thread cutter cutting the thread too short like you see in some reviews. It sews a nice pretty stitch and it is fast.

However, after practicing A LOT of straight lines, I just couldn’t find the sweet spot for the speed I wanted to go. I would try to get started and it would go way too slow. If I pressed on the pedal just a tiny bit more it would take off speeding.

I felt like I either had to go slower than I wanted or faster than I wanted. To maintain the right speed took too much tension in my foot, ankle, leg, and back. I can go back and forth between the other two machines in my house without having to adjust my feel for the pedal.

I decided I didn’t want to invest the time it would take to figure this third machine out. Also, I just didn’t like the “feel” of the machine. In order to justify spending that much money on a straight stitch only machine, I had to love the experience I had with it.

I have sewn a lot over the years (dresses, costumes, purses, bags, curtains, pillows, bedding, etc), and I couldn’t see looking forward to using this machine post quilt, so I boxed it up and took it back to the store.

My quilt still sits unfinished while I wait on a backordered machine with a big throat space that does more than straight stitching. Pros- Easy to thread and adjust tension, fast, automatic bobbin, thread cutter, huge throat space, tons of accessories including an extension table.

Cons – Too hard to “hold” the right speed with pedal, no free-arm, poor lighting, louder than I thought it would be, knee lift for the presser foot falls out if you move the wrong way because it doesn’t click in (it just rests inside the opening), uses a different kind of metal bobbin I hadn’t seen before and it only came with 5 or 6 of them, so I’d have to go buy a lot more bobbins.

Third time’s a charm. The PQ1500SL is the third Brother sewing machine that I’ve owned, the first 2 being sewing/quilting machines. I’ve been shopping for a heavier duty machine that’s quiet and doesn’t sound like a huge truck coming down road.

This machine is quiet and steady, producing beautiful stitches. I’ve only had it for 3 days but already feel happy and comfortable with all it has to offer. I’ve spent weeks shopping, reading reviews, and watching videos of this machine so I feel I’ve had it for quite a while.

So I concentrated on the things that kept coming up that seemed to be a bit of an issue with people like the automatic threader and the thread cutter. None of these are deal breakers so I concentrated on those items of concern for the past few days.

I have to say that the threader can be tricky at first but it didn’t take me long to get used to it. It isn’t quite as easy as my SQ9285 though. The thread cutter does cut the thread a little short but leaves at least 2 1/2″ of the upper thread sticking out.

I found if you pull your fabric out slowly after cutting, the thread doesn’t spring back under the presser foot. I waste so much thread on my other machine that doesn’t have this feature. Loading the bobbin is pretty quick and easy.

just follow the instructions and you won’t have a problem. Winding a new bobbin is fast and easy. The other feature I particularly like is the knee lift. It makes changing direction so easy. The extended table is a solid feature that I love.

I haven’t tried all the presser feet that come with it but will get to use those as time goes by. This machine sews like a beast but is a beauty to look at with clean features. I can finally stop shopping and get down to sewing again.

Recently purchased the Memory Craft 6650 and haven’t been disappointed yet. I’m just getting my feet wet with the free motion settings but it is very nice. I’ve watched many videos, put out by Janome and others who are giving their thoughts on the machine, and so far haven’t needed much help in figuring out how to use it.

I’ve made 4 quilt since I purchased because I love it so much haha. I constantly think about going and working on a project. Needle up down function is great for quilting, I also thoroughly enjoy the thread cutting option and the multiple ways to use (foot pedal, button, or lever option) makes me think this would be a good machine for many people in all walks of life.

I recommend it all the time to others.

THIS replaces my 30 year old Baby Lock. So much has changed!! We are still getting acquainted, but so far the instruction guide has been very helpful. My advice to others is to watch you tube videos and keep the guide handy.

My favourite changes so far inclde the automatic thread clipper and the variable position needle. I was pleasantly surprised that both the extension table and quilting accessories were included.

I truly love this machine. I originally ordered the Janome MC6550P. For whatever reason the company sent me a free upgraded model the MC6700. This is the best machine I have ever used. The accufeed system is amazing.

It’s construction is solid and the operation is flawless. The stitches are beautiful and constant. It’s so easy to use all of the decorative stitches. I will never own another sewing machine. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Elizabeth.

So I read the reviews on cs6000i. Actually the reviews are why I bought this machine. The machine is broken. I heard about how great their policy on fixing and such. So I call Brother. The hand wheel seized up and there is oil in the bottom of it.

Now I am told that I can take it to a sewing center to be fixed. I might add that is 30 minutes away so they can fix it. I may or may not have to pay for it. It may or may not be covered under warranty.

Soi have to say I won’t purchase again based on customer service. The machine has only been in use for 2 months. This makes me sad at the least.

This is my first Brother sewing machine. I currently own a Kenmore, a White and a singer. Must say by far this is the best. It’s very user friendly, whether you’re a beginner or advance seamstress. Love this sewing machine.

Love the fact that I can adjust the speed so that I can teach my 5 year old to sew without the machine going at rapid speed. Love the fact that it rides over heavy fabric with ease. My singer was a pain trying to sew over thick fabric like denim or at the joining of gathered fabric.

Just love this brother. I’m thinking of replacing my singer serger for the Brother. Can’t understand why I wasted so many years using a singer when I could’ve been using a Brother. Bought my first singer 13 years ago because growing up my mom had one and that’s how I’d learnt to sew.

What a difference to switch to a Brother. A must own.

I upgraded in December right before it sold out. I wanted the TL2000qi, but that sold out first before this one did. I am glad I made this purchase, especially for the adjustable speed lever!!!! For making small handmade bags and other assorted things, its wonderful! I upgraded from my Singer Heavy Duty that I bought in March 2021 for my business this is also after upgrading from my basic Brother machine that I had for YEARS to the Singer, and now my beautiful Juki.

I needed that extra speed. I am 30, I’ve been sewing from the early ages of 7, got back into sewing in 2014 for my animals; now a business owner of two years. Ladies and gents, if you want SPEED, you need this machine.

I did my first straight line “quilting”, and I was shocked as the speed. From going from domestic machines to a semi-industrial, it was a piece of cake to thread the machine! It also helped doing prior research on the machine and having been able to download the owner’s manual to learn more about it helped a lot as well.

If I was going to upgrade to a better machine for what I do for my business, this one is definitely the icing on the cake for me (in a good way!!) Buy thing machine!.

This item is not sold directly by Walmart. Buyer beware! I purchased it in November 2020 as a Christmas gift for my wife. She didn’t set it up and try to use it until January 11 2021. It was defective right out of the box.

The power pedal only worked sporadically and the bobbin carriage was full of oily gunk. Once cleaned out, the machine made distressed noises and broke the thread. I tried to return it to Walmart but they told me I had to go through the dealer that was that actual supplier, Sewmoreusa AKA Cathey’s Sew and Vac.

The dealer claimed that the return period had expired and that he couldn’t supply a replacement because this machine was in short supply (a bogus claim since I have found several other suppliers that have this model in stock).

I was told I had to ship the machine to Juki at my expense ($118). Seeing little alternative I did so. The dealer assured me that I would hear from Juki but after a week it’s been crickets. Do yourself a favor and buy somewhere else and be sure to put the machine though its paces immediately so you don’t end up with a lemon like I did.

This sewing machine is wonderful. It has strength and control, which is so necessary especially as I work on curved piecing for quilts. The only glitch is that I was not able to use the automatic threading function.

I read the instruction book, went to view several YouTube demonstrations, and still was not able to get it to self-thread. BUT once I did thread it manually, it was SO worth the investment.

Since Target is bugging me for a review after I’ve had the item for just one week this review will be fairly limited. First off, the ordering and pick-up from Target was flawless: came even earlier than projected.

The machine was boxed and packaged well against damage. It is very easy to set up. just be aware that there are several bands of tape that you have to remove (and some requires you to remove the “free arm” part to get to it.

Good news is that some thoughtful packer left a little folded over “grab tab” that made the tape very easy to remove without trying to scratch it off with your fingernails. And there was no sticky residue left anywhere on the machine.

As for the machine itself: set-up is explained well with visual clues on the machine itself (along with a helpful start-up pamphlet). Having had a previous Brother model, filling the bobbin and threading the machine was exactly the same with one exception: this one has a “needle threader device” that is supposed to make threading the needle easier.

I guess this would be helpful for some, but for me it was an exercise in frustration. I’m sure it can be done, but I gave up and just threaded the needle manually (like in the old days) and it took me about 2 seconds as opposed the the 10 minutes of frustration wasted on trying to spy the little “hook” that you have to catch the thread with to pull it through the needle eye.

So to me, that function is a little gimmicky, but I’ll keep trying to see if I can get it to work because, who knows, it might actually be faster when I finally figure it out. A quick run through of some basic stitches was simple, as the pre-set tension and stitch length was perfect.

Foot pedal control was good, and the motor seems to provide good speed if you want it to go fast. The extended “table” is nice. I bought it to use on patio chair cushion covers but since I have only had the machine for a week, I really can’t rate it on it’s ability to handle heavier fabric.

Overall it seems like a nice, manual machine with lots of options. I look forward to trying some light quilting and other projects. It was priced very well (on sale) and is definitely worth taking a chance on if it seems to meet your needs for a sewing machine.

Oh, and my other Brother machine was the basic version bought several years ago and handed down to my daughter who uses it far more than I ever did and it still runs perfectly.

The main reason for purchasing the XR3774 was to be able to sew several thicknesses. I have had it for about a week and it does that okay, no problem. When winding the bobbin, you want to make sure not to over wind it, if you do you will have skipped stitches for sure.

Had to tear out a couple of projects until I realized what I had done. Haven’t figured out how to use the needle threader, tried several times and still haven’t figured it out. Probably too simple for me.

It doesn’t sew really fast, but fast enough to get the job done. I haven’t tried out the fancy stitches, so I can’t give a review on it. What I don’t like is that you can’t thread another bobbin while sewing.

You have to stop in the middle of a project to wind more. All in all I would recommend the machine. Gave it a 4, only because I can’t figure out the needle threader and the bobbin winder.

Love this machine so much! I bought one of these years ago from Stoneberry and am thrilled to get a new one. I will never be without a machine with an oversized, removable table; it makes sewing so much easier.

Easy set up. Automatic threader, bobbin winder, and buttonholer. Quickset bobbin. So many lovely intricate decorative stitches. Pretty detailing on control panel. Perfect for my needs. Brother brand has never failed me and has amazing online support.

Great machine for the price. Can’t claim I’ve tested every single feature, but it does what 95% of buyers are going to need, and does it well. Couple of little items that could be improved / fixed for cheap.

Needle screw – keep as is, just add a small triangle plastic thumbscrew over set screw. Wouldn’t interfere w operation, costs virtually nothing, adds ‘quick change needle, no screw driver needed’ as a feature.

Expand / improve official Brother YouTube guides. Shouldn’t have YouTubers doing better instructional videos for using your equipment that the actual company. Or partner w one of them and make it your official.

It has a very detailed operation manual and a DVD as well that’s very helpful and useful. I think this machine is perfect for all kinds of sewers from beginner to expert. It’s very easy to thread the machine which is nice.

The possibilities are really endless as this machine has 165 built-in stitches such as a straight stitch, decorative, satin, quilting, buttonhole, character and more! It’s super easy to use the LCD screen and select your stitch, length, and width.

I love the fact that my model included a quilting foot in addition to the 7 already included! I really like the wide table and cute little accessories compartment! It also has a hard cover to protect the machine when not in use so that’s nice.

Sewing with this machine feels effortless and smooth, and I love that I can sew at various speeds too which makes it easy for my teens learning to sew!.

I absolutely love this sewing machine, i haven’t had a new sewing machine in over 30 years. It almost sews on its own, you could use a foot pedal, because it came with the machine, but i use just the push button and guide the fabric with one hand.

It also embroiders letters and numbers, so awesome!! And it offers several beautiful stitching choices. Its also a quilting machine and comes with most what you need for quilting, and Walmart offers the rest of the pieces at great prices, so I bought them all.

This machine was delivered well, but did not perform well. It has many pretty stitches, but way too many glitches. Now I am not trying at all to be clever here, I had hoped this would be a great machine for decorative stitches, and nice button holes.

After just a few days the thread cutting blade fell out of its holding arm, and though I was able to slide it back into place, I believe it fell out because the cutting blade arm, was constantly getting stuck in the “out” position, and would cause a thread jam.

This would reoccur most everyday from then on. Unfortunate definitely, because this feature was my single favorite function of the quantum stylist. After between 2 and 3 months of regular use, the electrical system/or computerized system began shorting out.

The lights would flicker and most stitches would not work at all. Eventually after a few more days of trying, it stopped working completely. I have sewn over a lifetime, and have used Singer machines all along, but will not buy them again, almost as much due to the warranty policy.

This does come with a warranty, and I have been told how to have it repaired, but this too was extremely disappointing for a Singer product. Warranty holders have to pay their own shipping to the nearest repair center, in my case that is 150 miles away.

I do not trust that even repaired, this machine will last beyond another 3 months, and I do not see evidence of additional help down the road as this sort of repair is only covered for 1 year. Functionally this machine was slightly uncomfortable to thread, as the plastic edges are squared off and like to catch.

Also the design of the bobbin threader is not well thought out for a machine as expensive as this. While performing regular stitching, the thread likes to jump up and catch on one of the bobbin threading guides above the thread spool, and it catches hard, and can break needles because of the tension.

So sorry Singer, but for such a good looking product, and experienced company, I had expected much more care and consideration in the machine, and most definitely had expected more in customer service.

I’ve only had my brother XR3774 37-Stitch sewing machine for about a week. I bought it to replace my Bernina that I am not able to take in for repair right now and as a back-up. So far I am very happy.

It does everything I need and came with some extra (normally found in more expensive modles) feet and the Wide Table. The Wide Table is normally meant for sewing quilts but it also works for my small scale projects.

It’s easy to use and creates a very nice stitch. The instructions in the manual could have been made more clear, especially for guiding of the bobbin thread but since I’ve been sewing for more than 50 years, I was finally able to figure out where the thread went in the bobbin case with just a little extra frustration.

I would recemmend it to beginning or intermediate sewers but with some extra guidance on setting and threading it into the bobbin holder properly in its position. (note: I have not watched the DVD that came with it yet, so maybe clearer instructions are on the DVD that comes with it).

This is the second Brother machine I’ve owned over the years and I’ve always been happy with Brother.

I am an experienced sewer and I find this machine too lightweight for me. It is lovely to look at, sews well without skipping stitches, but cannot handle several layers of fabric. I’m using it to make cloth masks from cotton fabric and it has difficulty going through the multiple layers of cotton when I turn the mask right side out and attempt to top stitch.

It does top stitch the layers, but sometimes gets stuck, and sews loudly while it is top stitching. If you are doing little more than quilting. It will serve you well. I have been sewing on a brother machine for 45 years and will be going back to that machine.

I taught myself on my G-ma’s hand cranked sewing machine. I am a Luddite, and I can use this with ease. My main issue was learning control of the pedal, so I could practice straight line sewing. ! If you lose the helpful How To CD, more exist on YouTube.

It is so worth the money, and has made sewing things a whole different experience. It can ssew leather, but I use my family Singer for that, as I love the old girl. this is amazing, and I know I have barely scratched the surface of what I can do with it!.

I used to sew but on a whim, gave my machine to a granddaughter who began to sew. I would “borrow” when I needed it but it got to be too much trouble. I caved and bought this machine – I had heard of it (great reports) and I notice on tv programs where sewing machines are used they are Brother machines.

It is an “out of the box” hit – easy to set up (I love the extended table), easy to use and easy to read the instructions. The only issue I had was threading the needle – that’s a small eye!!! So thank you for giving me back my sewing passion.

I’m very disappointed with this machine as a quilting machine. It’s called a quilting machine, but the throat is far too small to do actual quilting on anything bigger than a baby quilt. I’m just beginning quilting, so I didn’t know when I bought it that it would be a problem.

The machine is ok for piecing, although getting a precise quarter inch seam is difficult. None of the included presser feet produce a seam that is actually a quarter inch. The machine defaults to the left position when it’s first turned on, which results in broken needles if you aren’t real careful.

I can’t find how to change the default to the center to match the quilting foot that’s on it 99 percent of the time. Changing the needles and presser feet is a little difficult because the space is so small that it’s hard to hold the tiny screwdriver.

It is lightweight and easy to carry to classes, and it’s quiet.

At first I was intimidated by the idea of owning a computerized sewing machine because technology is not really my thing. What a pleasant surprise to learn how easy operating this sewing machine is. Brother has illustrated so many of the operating details right on the machine.

I am in my upper 60’s and my eyesight is failing, so the Self Threading needle function is a real nice feature. It took me a few times to get the very last step down, but once I did, changing thread colors became a pleasant experience.

150 built in utility & decorative stitches, each with their own pre programmed setting is more than I could have ever imagined. The machine comes with everything I need to get started except for a spool of thread.

Brother includes 4 bobbins, a seam ripper, needle set, ball point needle, twin needle, cleaning brush, eyelet punch, screwdriver, spool caps (3), extra spool pin and an accessory pouch. There is even a compartment on the base of the machine to store everything in! Plus they include10 different sewing & quilting feet! They have made it so easy to tell this sewing machine what I want it to do.

Push a couple buttons and the machine does the rest. Happy to see that the LCD display is large enough to view, even without my glasses. I really appreciate that Brother included a wide table that is super simple to attach.

The monogram option is going to be one of my favorites because I have so many phrases in my head just waiting to be sewn onto fabric and turned into homemade gifts. With 55 alphanumeric stitches, the sky’s the limit as to what I can create.

It has a lot of features and details that make it easy to use, like the light that shines on the sewing area and the fast bobbin winding system. It’s simple to just get started doing some basic stitches, but of course there’s so much more you can do with this sewing machine.

It has so many built-in stitch types that it can do – everything from utilitarian stitches for all your needs, to stitches that are just plain cute. The first thing I sewed together was a big double-layered blanket, and I felt so proud of myself that I was able to make something that looked professional so quickly and with zero previous sewing machine experience! So, I’d say this is a good machine to start your sewing machine journey with, but there’s enough awesome features and built-in stitch types here that it’s also the perfect machine for the experienced user who wants to step up their sewing game.

Personally, I can’t stop dreaming of all the things I want to stitch up, now that I’ve got a wonderful machine that can help make my dreams a reality.

This is a fully loaded, but not over engineered, sewing machine. A lot of thought went into the features that make home sewing easier and more successful. The features such as thread cutting (available 2 different ways), the accurate threading, thoughtfully grouped stitches, and easy to navigate touch screen make this an easy to learn and use machine.

The punch power, almost industrial, is a plus for people who want to sew with heavier materials, such as vinyl or upholstery fabric. The HZL-F600 comes with lots of accessories that are not often bundled with a sewing machine at this price point.

The even feed walking foot, large sewing table, and some of the extra feet make this a great value. The hard carrying case is good protection while toting to classes or retreats. Also, the relatively light weight, 21 lbs, is an easily portable size.

Everything about this machine is solid and reliable. Only one suggestion, if it were bundled with the straight stitch sewing plate, it would be even better. I love my Juki!.

I had only sewed on sewing machine a few times and machine bobbin thread would get caught up. Also the cutter would keep cutting. I had to call and speak with the owner where I purchased and he told me sewing machine need to be reset.

Sewing Machine keep jaming up then the same problem happened and I had to reset again. It kept doing this and come to find out bobbin case had a hole in it. I assumed it moved and sewing needle punctured it.

I then had to replace the bobbin case which costs $70. I told owner I have never had these type of issues with any sewing machine I’ve ever owned this is the first. I feel sewing machine has a defect with the bobbin case.

Once I replaced bobbin case and installed it correctly It made a clicking noise still. I called sewing machine store and spoke with the sewing machine technician and he told me to feel for a bump along the edge of bobbin case and I had to smooth out tge bump with an Emory board.

It then started sewing without loud clicking noise but it still has a clicking sound. I bout this sewing machine after sewing a YouTube quilter give a tutorial on what a great sewing machine it is. And I was sold and had to have one.

But for me it has only been a pain in the backside.

I’ve had a Kenmore machine for 39 years and have never had a problem with it. My best friend and I have gotten into quilting over the past few years, and she decided to “upgrade” her Singer to a Bernina.

She got top of the line – and top of the price range!! I could not imagine spending that much on a machine, My hubby said he wanted me to get a new machine for Christmas, and after some thought, I thought I’d take him up on it.

I am a purchase researcher, and will check out every review and comment before I buy a big item. After searching, the Juki HZL-600 Exceed Series was my choice. It does everything the Bernina does at a third of the price.

Now, it does not have a USB port, which my friend has, but I’m not needing that for embroidery. This machine is doing my quilting and fancy stitches that can go with quilting just fine! I love the sturdiness of the machine, and how quiet it is when sewing.

It did take time to get used to, but I have not found one thing that I couldn’t figure out, test out, or try. Very nice manual to help you out, 225 different stitches and a memory to save stitches used in the project until you delete them.

Overall, a GREAT machine that will last forever and at 40% off, it was a steal!!! Highly recommend this machine for sewing and quilting enthusiasts! ;).

The foot controller is not long enough to reach the front of my gracie quilt rack. The foot controller has the cut thread button on the heel of the single driving pedal. The machine did not include a free motion quilting foot.

So basically I have to stand on one foot and reach under the table and hope I don’t rock back and cut the thread while I am trying to quilt. And I have to buy a quilting free motion foot to even attempt sewing with it,.

I absolutely love this machine. The foot petal took some getting used to, I was cutting thread when I really wanted to sew. That didn’t take long, and I love the convenience of the knee foot lift. Now my hands are free to put the pieces under the foot and cut the threads without having to move my hands from my project.
