20 Best Sewing Machine For Beginners Making Clothes (2023 Updated)

I have only had it for 3 hours and I like it! It is a replacement for my old CE4000, which finally died (I gave it a mock funeral) after 15 years. So far, I have done test stitching, reinforced a seam on a new shower curtain, and mended a pair of pants.

I am not an expert seamstress. I make little craft items, and I use my machine for basic clothing repairs, etc. I think this machine will do the job just fine for the next 15 years. Two things I have noticed: a.

the bobbin winder is now plastic instead of metal. Yuck. b. the storage compartment has not gotten better – it’s still “open” and your stuff will fall out if it’s not in a bag or pouch. Brother used to include a pouch and yeah.

no longer. You have to provide your own. c. the auto needle threader is now mostly plastic – seems fragile and I’m afraid of it. On the good side, here are the improvements over my old machine (the CE4000) 1.

the screwdriver is angled so that it will work, without slipping and scratching the plate. Yay! 2. the bobbin case seems far more well designed on this machine. 3. It does seem like it’s far quieter and less loud – also, you can set the speed as you wish.

This is awesome. 4. it’s lighter than my old machine. 5. thread tension seems to be spot on right out of the box. 6. (i wish they would tell you what size needle is installed – I mean, in the actual machine when you remove it from the box.

) I couldn’t tell, but I’m guessing it’s a universal, maybe a 12? 7. the manual was well-written this time. 8. it purrs. it does. 9. Auto one step button hole – this is a non-negotiable for me. It does it well! And in different styles! 10.

I don’t think I will use all the stitches in my lifetime, but it’s nice to have those choices. For someone like me, who does basic sewing/mending/craft items, it does beautiful straight, zig-zag, overcast stitches that are just easy to use.

This is a great machine for someone who doesn’t want to spend their life savings on a sewing machine, will use it occasionally, and will learn with it. Great job, Brother USA!.

I received this product from Brother for free in exchange for my honest opinion / review of the product. This machine is GREAT! I am a novice sewer at best and this machine is very easy to use. The self threading needle had me a little stumped, as I couldn’t get the mechanism to move as it should but threading it by hand took little to no effort.

There are numbers and arrows stamped into the plastic upper body of the machine that allow anyone to thread the machine by just following along. The bobbin is also self threading and just as simple to do.

The machine itself is well crafted with a sturdy / hard plastic material resulting in a solid machine that is lightweight and easy to carry / move about.

An onboard tool box can be easily removed to make room for an extra “table” giving you an additional 14 inches of work space. In the pouch that you will find inside the tool box you will find 5 extra feet, 3 needle packs and extra bobbins as well.

Included as well is a very well written book of instructions that include step by step photo instructions. The manual comes in 3 languages, each it’s own book. Using the machine. As stated above I am NOT a person who sews well.

After unpacking the machine, there are several parts to install/put together. The power supply and foot pedal were easy to plug in and start using. The operation panel is easy to read and you can change the stitch size and style with the simple press of a button.

I love that there is an attachment on the side that you can store accessories in. This makes trying to keep up with small parts so much easier! Accessories included are about 12 different types of needles/stitch parts in order to sew different items.

Monogramming is my new favorite stitch! Other accessories include a cleaning brush, screwdriver and an extra spool pin. Threading the Brother machine is also very easy. Thankfully the instruction manual is well written and easy to read! I love how there are multiple ways to thread depending on the style of stitch you plan on using.

The tension that holds the bobbin in place isn’t working right. The machine works briefly and then jams up repeatedly. I had an older Singer sewing machines from 20 years ago and I never had any issues which I bought in 2001.

I decided to treat myself to a new machine and it’s awful. This one I’m having issues with the bobbin mechanism for some reason. I’ve tried different tension settings and it jams up every time with the thread getting stuck somewhere.

I really don’t think it’s built well. Since I waited too long to open the box and use the sewing machine, I’m past the 90 days. I have no choice but to donate the product. I called the store where I bought it and the customer service person was very nice, but she said she can’t take a sewing machine back that’s been opened and also it is past 90 days.

She instructed me to contact Singer and ask about warranty information. I did just email them and ask for a refund or credit to purchase a better sewing machine as I’m wondering if a heavy duty machine would be made better.

In my previous Singer sewing machine from 20 years ago, the bobbin was easily accessible in a horizontal layout directly under the needle with an easy metal door that slid open and closed. The way this new machine is designed I have to take off a big plastic container that feels cheap and then the bobbin is held vertically in a metal holder.

The entire metal holder has to be removed for me to change out the bobbin, and threading it through this metal holder looks like a really poor design. It’s not easy to wrap the thread through the metal bobbin holder and then I still need to physically keep it all together while I place the unit back into the sewing machine, and swing the small metal bobbin door open so it will pop back into place.

After reading some reviews that a 6 year old can use the machine, I am convinced the machine I bought was either broken and returned to the store without the sales people knowing it was opened, or there is a defect in manufacturing it.

Everything arrived packaged well and the machine works as it should. I did, however, have to contact the seller/manufacturer to ask for the accessories that weren’t included in the original package. I’m still waiting on the button-hole accessory.

It’s backordered and as quickly as Singer shipped out the first bit of accessories, I expect it will arrive as well. It’s been many years since I used a sewing machine and this one will serve me well until I’m more comfortable moving up to a higher-end model with more options.

The Singer 1304 Start is my newest and favorite acquisition after experiencing the shortages the Covid-19 pandemic caused in 2020. I’m older than 70 and have used many sewing machines over the years.

i bought the Start in-store at Jo Ann a few days ago. It weighs only nine pounfs, exactly right for me. I was pleased the needle was easy to thread due to the eye being front to back. I could thread it without using a needle threader.

The bobbin winder worked perfectly. The bobbin and bobbin case reminded me of my sewing days long ago and were easy for me handle. My first project was to shorten the hems of a pair of slacks. The straight stitches were perfect.

Just for fun I tried the various stitches and buttonhole foot on fabric scraps. They too were perfect. I love this straightforward machine and its reasonable price of $119. Some of the reviews I’ve read were complaints about the bobbin winder and the bobbin case.

Most likely these were user error problems, specifically incorrect threading. No machine will. produce perfect stitches if the the spool and bobbin are not threaded the right way. This is a manual machine.

No computers. No software involved. No tedious menus to search through. A beginner can use it with no fuss. With supervision a child can use it. An experienced sewist looking to simplify will appreciate this lightweight self.

explanatory machine. Its only decorative stitch is a pretty scallop stitch which requires only a simple turn of the manual stitch dial.

I haven’t touched a sewing machine since I was 12, so as it’s been over 30 years I’m more or less a beginner; but the manual seems to assume a certain degree of prior knowledge. The machine has been put through its paces and everything seems to work, but I spent several hours after receiving this trying simply to wind the bobbin and thread the needle, as the instructions and diagrams in the manual don’t adequately show how to do these things.

I was also given essentially 2-3 sets of instructions as there are two in the manual for different models (and I didn’t know which I’d been given) and a third for winding the bobbin on the machine itself.

Maintaining tension on the bobbin after the thread is cut is not explained, only that it will create problems if the thread is not tightly wound. Also the steps in using the needle threader are out of order and the diagrams do not entirely show where the thread should go (behind the threader? in front? The thread disappears off the edge of the diagram and reappears elsewhere).

My mother-in-law is an experienced seamstress and she couldn’t figure out how to do this from the instructions. If this is truly a machine for beginners then the manual needs to be written for beginners.

This machine was supposed to be an upgrade from my basic model but I would give anything to have my old machine back. At least it could handle more than 2 layers of fabric. I had never broken a needle in my 10 years of sewing until I tried using this one.

Broke the first needle within 30 minutes of using the machine. It’s supposed to be good for quilting but I just broke another needle (the 5th since owning this machine) while trying to sew the backing, batting, and top layers of my quilt together.

I changed the needle and rethreaded top and bobbin, now it doesn’t work at all. the Needle keeps getting hung up on something inside and jamming. It’s a shame that I’ve had it for 2 months and have only used it a handful of times.

Save your money and by the basic sewing machine models, you will be much happier.

I was so excited to get this machine, did my research and it arrived promptly. I am not a beginner but read all thru the booklet anyway. I am beyond disappointed! The tension refuses to cooperate which causes broken thread.

The various decorative stitches either do not work at all or change in the middle of a project!! When you adjust the speed to a certain level, all of a sudden it speeds up by itself. Lighting is poor.

Very noisy. I paid to have maintenance done by a reputable company after only a month and that did not correct anything! After having to take a project apart 6 times yesterday. I am over this machine.

Its brain has gone berserk! I have had the machine 4 months, done everything the manual says to correct these issues and now am told they don’t stock it anymore so. no replacement. I now have to pay to ship it back plus a restocking fee.

Why would you restock a machine that does not work? I would gladly have accepted a new machine of the same kind, thinking this one is just defective. No cooperation there. Against “policy”. I guess they worry more about policy than making a customer happy.

This seems to be an older model machine. The instruction booklet was printed in 2011. I remember seeing this model, or something like it, in stores several years back. I also just recently found it on sale at another online store for $25 less than Walmart.

This machine is very noisy and using it is an unpleasant experience. The pattern selection dial and the presser foot level are difficult to operate — very stiff, and they go “clunk” when operated. The flatbed plate is plastic, with two screws on the back edge of it.

The front edge has no screws to hold it down. The left front corner is popped up slightly. The right front corner is even with the flatbed. The storage compartment does not drop open. You must slide it sideways and remove it (as you would for free arm sewing) in order to access any items you might store in it.

This is very impractical and inconvenient. Despite the noise, the motor runs evenly. The fabric passes smoothly over the footfeed. The bobbin winder works well. The stitches are nice — mine came pre-set for straight stitching.

I made curtains from a satin fabric and had no problems. This machine comes with a metal presser foot, but most of the accessory items are plastic. I am accustomed to plastic bobbins, but never saw plastic presser feet before.

I cannot confidently recommend this machine, because I fear the selection dial and the presser foot level will eventually break — they are really clunky. But, make your own decision.

I was actually afraid to remove the machine from the box, but got around to it after some days of procrastination. Watched the instructional DVD twice in full and then in short increments as I tried to follow along while attempting to thread machine.

This in itself was anxiety provoking. The voice of the person who provides instructions sounds like a cartoon character-very young, high-pitched voice. Could be considered annoying by some. The automatic needle threader is not as easy to operate as one might expect.

Older eyes will have trouble finding “the hook” which catches the thread. In addition to wearing reading glasses I had to hold a magnifying glass up to the machine in order to see it. Finally got it threaded and going.

I must say it has far too many “decorative” stitches – some are actually hideous looking and I can’t imagine ever using them. Numerous dials. Will get used to it eventually, I’m sure. Perhaps this is too much machine for me.

Why I chose this model: 1. Automatic needle threader. 2. No need to lubricate or oil (old machines required much attention). 3. Light weight-easy to carry. 4. Wanted to try Brother machine for a change.

5. Excellent price. Office Depot sent it out right away and I received it in just a few days. I am hoping I will feel a good level of comfort and degree of confidence in operating the machine soon.

I bought myself a heavy duty machine to replace my previous singer. After much consideration, I went for the Heavy duty model as I previously found my old machine couldn’t tackle thicker fabrics such as wools for coats.

The online support service was brilliant, very knowledgeable and didn’t push you to buy a model that was more powerful than your needs. I even got some extra bits and bobs! The delivery on the machine was incredibly quick.

It’s a great machine, so quiet in comparison to my old singer! The first project was a canopy with a very heavy canvas, sewed like a dream. Can’t wait to use it more as winter sets in and we update our family wardrobe.

I’ve used Singer sewing machines for the last 50+ years. This model was an extreme disappointment. It is in no way ‘heavy duty’. It sews faster than previous sewing machines and that’s about it. It won’t sew through the same things the previous machine (purchased in 1992) sewed.

This one is a complete waste of money. I’ve communicated with Singer several times about this and the nearly useless Serger I bought at the same time, and at no time did they say they were looking to improve on their current models.

If you want to sew two pieces of lightweight material together and nothing else, this machine will probably work fine for you.

This machine does exactly what it says. For my first project I’ve already sewn 6 layers of leather together and also multiple layers (4) of Harris Tweed, to make a handbag. Despite being a very novice sewer I haven’t found any real difficulties, although there is definitely a “knack” to catching the thread from the bobbin, but once mastered it really is quite straightforward.

Not a quiet machine, but when it’s dealing with heavyweight fabrics that’s understandable. I would recommend a walking foot as an optional extra, plus some spare bobbins and heavyweight needles. I definitely recommend this machine.

I purchased this for sewing lightweight cloth. The reason for this particular model was the multiple stitches. I didnt realize how wide this machine could sew until I sampled some of the stitches. The wide 7 mil stitch makes them stand out.

The machine is very quiet. I wound a bobbin first thing out. That was a complete success. However I forgot to remove the thread from the spring tension and threaded the machine and it sewed perfect except I notice it pulled tight when I went to removed it from the machine.

Upon investigation I noticed the misthreading and threaded it correctly. It sewed perfect again and no tight pull out from the machine. This machine doesnt have a pressure foot pressure adjustment. The light on the machine is very bright and clear.

The extension table is a very nice size. I didnt think I would use it but Im positive that will come in handy. The TS200Q has a small foot print for a full sized machine. All these machines look like they are made of the same materials but after receiving and using this machine, there is a big difference.

My other sewing machines were a riccar mechanical and a brother pacesetter ult2001. This machine is in between the two and will replace them nicely. The Riccar being mechanical was simple the brother is much morecomplicated – the Janome is simply easy to achieve the same results as both my old machines.

The Janome doesnt have the built in scissors but I wont miss it- the manual thread cutter on the Janome is super sharp and convenient for my type of sewing.

Initially need to admit that I haven’t been able to jump into sewing and use my new machine due to current commitments I have, HOWEVER I cannot wait to do so!!! AM SO excited about this machine and it’s capabilities to sew all kinds of fabrics from sheer to heavy duty, easy to difficult! Am trying to read all instructions first so that will not mess up.

My first project is not necessarily an easy one as I need to complete a bean bag type chair for stuffed animals but it is out of minky fabric. This killed my previous machine play another one so want to move cautiously.

However I believe that it will NOT be a problem with this new machine!.

This machine does NOT have a 1. 0A amp motor. It has half that- 0. 5A amps. To say that I am disappointed to have paid nearly $400 for a machine that does what the average <$200 does would be the understatement of the year.

Mine has HD-3000BE on the front of the machine, yet the label on the back of the machine says “753LE” and 0. 5A amps. I bought what I thought was a heavy duty machine. I am disappointed by this overpriced and underpowered model.

So if you’ve got money to burn and all you’re doing is masks- go for it. But if you want something that’s going to sew thin leather, vinyl, and multiple layers of denim- forget it. This is not going to do it.

This was my first sewing machine and although it comes with picture instructions which are great, they are made for people who know where everything goes. There are many demonstration videos on you-tube and I fully recommend watching one of these videos.

I got confused with the instructions 1 and 2 because I didn’t realise that I needed to put cotton onto a bobbin and I got part way then was stumped. Fortunately my husband knew that I had to slide the bobbin to the right and he also told me that once it’s full it will stop itself and you don’t have to worry about it overfilling.

Then the bobbin case foxed me, I spent an hour trying to work out how to get the bobbin out of the bobbin case, gave up and went to bed. Next day I shared my frustrations with my husband who just popped the darned thing straight out as I stared in wonder.

My error was to pull out the lever at the back but that is what you do to stop it falling out. I do actually love everything about it and having the free arm to turn up trousers is brilliant it works perfectly.

I’m still not sure how all the stitches work but I expect it’s just a matter of playing around and watching videos. I would have given this 5 stars but that automatical needle threader is almost impossible even with you-tube tutorials.

I bought this mid-summer this year. It’s only been a few months and it’s been just a massive box of problems. I had to replace multiple parts to get it in okay working condition. Even then, if I don’t oil the machine literally every half an hour, it goes down hill.

The bobbin is constantly having issues. The tension is also never working. I change the tension dozens of times, only to have it work on the original setting I had it on hours later. It’s constantly jamming and making noises.

The machine shakes as I sew and the storage tray constantly falls off while I sew. It makes the entire sewing experience awful and I’ve always found sewing peaceful and enjoyable. It only someone’s finished the stitching and always skipped threads.

I changed my needle dozens of times and changed to different types of threads. Also, the weirdest thing about this machine is I cannot go over the slowest or second slowest speed. If I do, it immediately jams itself.

So I need to spend an unnecessarily long time sewing one line. I really wanted to make it work, but it didn’t. Overall, I had a terrible experience with the little amount of time I had with this machine.

This is a great sewing machine for a beginner. In my case, it is a great machine for an elderly person. My mom is 86 years old and her machine didn’t work any longer so she bought a new one at Walmart.

She was thinking a sewing machine, no matter the model, would be easy to use. After all she has been a sewer almost all her life. She was wrong about that. It was all digital and the manual was too difficult to understand.

(It wasn’t a Singer). I found her this machine and gave it to her for Mother’s Day and she couldn’t be happier. The only thing I wish it had was a manual. She doesn’t do computers so it’s impossible for her to look up anything.

I live too far away to help her so I wish you would consider “not saving” on paper, as you stated, and put a manual with the machines since not everyone has a computer.

I received this machine as a prize drawing in an online contest. It was shipped to me and arrived in perfect condition. Full disclosure: I own a Brother 1250D and a Brother Stellaire XE1, so I am experienced with higher end computerized machines, and I was a little bit skeptical about a basic mechanical machine.

Well, I can tell you, I LOVE THIS LITTLE MACHINE! I love being able to just turn it on and sew! The stitched included are pre-set in width and length, and being able to sew without a lot of decisions is wonderful.

The stitch quality is perfect, and making the 4 step buttonhole is very easy, even though I’ve been spoiled by the buttonhole application on my Brother 1250D. Even the manual threading is simple enough, because of the bright LED lighting.

I love that this machine is lightweight enough to move easily, yet still has a metal frame inside. I am looking forward to using this machine as a way to introduce my young grandchildren to sewing. As someone who has sewn for 50+ years, and who has owned several computerized machines with all sorts of “Bells and Whistles”, this machine does not disappoint as it has all the features I need to get the job done, without a lot of fuss.

This is the machine I’d choose to take to a friend’s house for a sewing party (once we are allowed to go to parties again!).

I know nothing about sewing on a machine and this machine has helpful diagrams right on the machine to help guide you. I did have a veteran provide a training session to load a spool, etc. I highly recommend doing this because sewing machines are an engineering feat and not completely intuitive without some explanation.

The machine provided great teaching tools just where you need them and will be great future reminders for me. She (thanks Sherri) is a very experienced seamstress and she highly approved of my purchase as well.

I am new to sewing and at first I was quite intimidated by this machine. But after watching the quick start video and a couple of YouTube videos, I’ve quickly started sewing and the intimidation is gone.

I’m am enjoying this machine. It is pretty user friendly and learning to get started has been a breeze. The only thing that I will note is that the needle has gotten jammed a few times but I’m assuming it was due to the fact that I was attempting to sew a thick fold.

I will say that it could possibly be user error as well. I haven’t begun to try any advanced sewing, but for what I plan to use this machine for, it seems to be perfect. I will update this review after I’ve used the machine more.

Great machine for the price. Can’t claim I’ve tested every single feature, but it does what 95% of buyers are going to need, and does it well. Couple of little items that could be improved / fixed for cheap.

Needle screw – keep as is, just add a small triangle plastic thumbscrew over set screw. Wouldn’t interfere w operation, costs virtually nothing, adds ‘quick change needle, no screw driver needed’ as a feature.

Expand / improve official Brother YouTube guides. Shouldn’t have YouTubers doing better instructional videos for using your equipment that the actual company. Or partner w one of them and make it your official.

It has a very detailed operation manual and a DVD as well that’s very helpful and useful. I think this machine is perfect for all kinds of sewers from beginner to expert. It’s very easy to thread the machine which is nice.

The possibilities are really endless as this machine has 165 built-in stitches such as a straight stitch, decorative, satin, quilting, buttonhole, character and more! It’s super easy to use the LCD screen and select your stitch, length, and width.

I love the fact that my model included a quilting foot in addition to the 7 already included! I really like the wide table and cute little accessories compartment! It also has a hard cover to protect the machine when not in use so that’s nice.

Sewing with this machine feels effortless and smooth, and I love that I can sew at various speeds too which makes it easy for my teens learning to sew!.

I absolutely love this sewing machine, i haven’t had a new sewing machine in over 30 years. It almost sews on its own, you could use a foot pedal, because it came with the machine, but i use just the push button and guide the fabric with one hand.

At 11 lbs, the Janome c30 is a great travel machine. It’s also a very good back up machine, or a beginner machine. If this model only had the speed control – i would give it 5 stars! For the price of a mechanical machine, you get a computerized one.

I love this machine so much I keep buying optional accessories for it! I find myself using it a lot even though I have a bigger machine with more bells and whistles. In my recent quilt project, i used this machine for all my straight stitch piecing.

I would call myself a beginner when it comes to sewing. I don’t even do a good job while manually stiching with needle and thread. Like stiching button and some work. Set up for this machine wasn’t that hard.

Manual was pretty helpful. I had to start the task by loading the bobbin and I followed the instructions to do it. I really like the LCD display. LED display shows the selected stitch, It’s clear and convenient while stitching.

There are these buttons through which you can choose type of stitches and also adjust the width and length. There is a bright light around the needle area. This products weighs around 10 pounds and hence very easy to move it around and makes it portable.

I used a relative’s Janome sewing machine and really liked it. I ordered mine on Walmart online because they had the most variety to compare. This machine is very easy to use just pay attention to how to thread it correctly.

The instruction booklet is very helpful for all the different functions. I use it for mending and simple alterations.

I am very pleased with my purchase. Runs very quietly and smoothly. So far I have only hooked it up to make sure it worked and check the stitching but unless something unforeseen should appear(which I do not think will happen) I am very pleased.

I learned to sew on an old treadle machine (and wish I still had it) and while the new machines can make a lot of pretty designs, they cannot make a seamstress out of someone. Either you can sew or you can’t.

The designs the machines make cannot teach you to cut and follow a pattern or know how to join the pieces of fabric. You need a knowledgeable seamstress to teach someone how to truly sew. So, while the top line machines are fun; if you really want to sew find someone to teach you before investing in an expensive machine.

Despite having this sent to an old address this sewing machine is a dream! Solid that you can feel with every touch and every function. This is a real work horse for performing straight forward non-fancy stitching jobs.

Easy to use. Glad I finally chose a smaller non-digital machine so I can focus on actual sewing instead of on how to use and repair a smart sewing machine!.

This machine was recommended by a friend who sews everyday. I have sewn for over 50 years and was not interested in a computer type machine. I wanted a basic, inexpensive, easy to operate machine. This Singer 4432 is lightweight but sturdy.

It was easy to set up, thread, and wind the bobbin. It only came with basic instructions but the manual was readily available online for download. Manual is essential if you want specific instructions for any of the many stitches and buttonhole that the machine is capable of.

Also, the manual is needed for troubleshooting problems, if any. If you are a beginner or experienced, I think you will be pleased with the ease of operation. It also comes with a free online sewing class.

That might be a good introduction for someone who is just beginning or who has not sewn for awhile. I have not checked it out. I opted for the manual instead. I will probably view the class later. It does not come with a case but has a handle attached to the machine which makes it so easy to transport.

I like that it has a simple cover with a hole for the handle. It protects the machine from dust when not in use. Overall I appreciate the style and am pleased with the performance of the machine.

Ok, what a terrible time I had with singer. Started out with the M1000. Two machines were faulty right out of the box. Upgraded to the M2100, also did not work right. Then upgraded to this 4432 and it puckered and pulled material, no matter how many settings adjustments I made.

I finally went to an actual sewing shop with some of material and they asked me what machine I have. I said the singer 4432, they laughed at me. They said any singer machine built after 1988 ish is not worth 1/4 of the asking price.

They sold out and royalty their name to a cheap manufacturer. If you’re looking to buy thus machine, save your money, go to an actual sewing shop and talk to a salesman. Get a real machine, not this garbage stitch box that won’t keep even the thinest, pinned a million times material stitching straight.

I was so excited to be able to review this sewing machine as I had considered getting a sewing machine for the past three months. Years ago I did a lot of sewing making children clothes, drapes, quilts, pillow covers, and my clothes.

Well, that was 30 years ago and I haven’t sewn anything recently. My last sewing machine I gave to my daughter-in-law and now feel like I need one for altering clothes. No big projects are planned and I’m not sure that I will use all the fancy stitches on this machine but after just trying this machine, I Love It.

I set up the machine following the instructions for putting the thread on the machine and threading the needle. (It has a needle threaded that actually works. ) I also loaded the bobbin with thread. All of this was pretty easy by following the pictures.

I did some test runs trying some of the stitches that are offered. I was impressed with the neat secure stitch that was made by this machine with just a simple straight stitch. My first project will be to hem a bedskirt that I feel is a couple of inches to long.

The arm of the machine comes off to make it easy to sew sleeves or hem pant legs. The machine has a light in the needle area just like most machines and also has a lever on the front which enables you to do a backward stitch to secure your stitch line.

I do wish that a longer period of time were given to review items like this Janome sewing machine because there are so many functions and possibilities to check out. Because there are so many choices to use this machine I deducted one star due to not being able to use all the offerings of the machine.

BUT. I DO LOVE IT.

I love Janome sewing machines. I own a large expensive all the bells and whistles Janome and can tell you, their products are awesome. That being said I decided on this simple machine to have available for friends and family during crafting sessions.

The packaging was great and I received this machine in perfect condition. Once I had it unpacked I had it up and sewing in no time at all. The instructions are simple to understand and the illustrations are very helpful.

All the items that need to be set up, (thread spool, bobbin, foot pedal) took very little time. Winding the bobbin and threading the machine is so easy a beginner would have no trouble getting started.

Selecting a stitch, width and tension is also very easy. I mended a torn tee shirt and the stitching is very uniform and neat. I decided to make a small cosmetic style bag and at one point had to sew through three layers of cotton material and it was a breeze.

Perfect stitching, perfect tension. I didn’t use the button hole maker and did not get to the zipper part of my project yet, but I have no doubt they will be easy as well. The machine is small and has attractive colors on it.

The body is well made. It has a small storage place for the attachments that come with the machine. Now, why I only gave it 4 stars. The first thing I noticed was no reverse. This was not a problem for me since I learned to sew on machines with no reverse.

It does take a little more time to turn the fabric and turn it again to finish off a seam but for the quality of the machine it is not that big a deal. Next I noticed that certain parts of the machine had parts that appear to be questionable as to their durability.

The thread spool attachment is plastic and where it attaches sticks out and does not fold in or down like on my more expensive model. This would be a concern when transporting. The foot pedal is very thin light weight plastic although the electrical cord seems to be very high quality.

The light weight causes the pedal to be less stable and moves around a lot. Last, the attachments snap on and off and are made of lighter plastic and I wonder how long they will last with continuous changing.

But if you are careful and consider these issues, you should have a great time using this little workhorse of a machine. I would recommend it very highly.

I received this machine today and ran it through its paces. There were several things I liked and a few that I did not. It runs smoothly and the stitches are nice and even. It also has a selection of decorative stitches.

I am a fan of the drop in bobbin and this has it. I also like the small window in the needle plate that allows you to see how much bobbin thread remains. It is definitely a plus that you do not have to remove the free arm in order to access the bobbin (as you do in some other models by Janome.

The four-step buttonhole is easy to complete. I am not a fan, however, of the snap on/off feet. I much prefer the “magnetized” set-up where the magnetized foot is easily released and a new one picked up.

Also, the feet that are included are plastic and do not seem particularly sturdy. This is also the case with the bobbin winder pin. It is made out of plastic – metal would probably hold up much better, especially on a part that will receive constant use.

The plastic spool pin attaches to the top right rear of the machine and “sticks out” a bit. If you travel with your machine (classes, vacations, etc. ), it is a set up for it to break off or receive damage.

A retractable metal spool pin would have been a much better option. All in all, I am pleased with my purchase. I believe that for the price, the Janome MOD-19 is a good basic machine. I intend to use this for a spare or travel machine.

It would also be appropriate for a beginner.

I wanted to upgrade from my Singer Talent and the Singer Patchwork 7285 is amazing. It comes with an extending arm and so many presser feet! It sews like a dream and so far has handled both light and heavy weight fabrics brilliantly.

I particularly like the fact that you can set the speed of the machine – perfect when I’m doing fidgety sewing in my crafting. I rarely use the presser foot now, preferring the stop/start button. It has a very good cover (stuff canvas) too.

There’s so many options and features on this machine and I’m having loads of fun with it. I got help from the virtual chat on the website, which was much appreciated. I received my machine and special gift within a few days and everything arrived in immaculate condition.

I would highly recommend this to anyone from beginner to more experienced sewers. And great price from the outlet!.

It turns out, I’m a Singer girl. Singer is the brand I grew up with; I have good memories associated with it. But, I had to try a Brother to make sure. Brother is known for technology. The Brother has a more modern look, a snazzy case and its peddle and electrical plug are separate, a great convenience.

Probably both machines are equally good. But for quilting, my primary use, replacing feet, the shape and size of the arm, raising and lowering the foot in use, the storage bin, its weight and manageability, the shape of the arm, the ease of changing stitches, threading the machine and the bobbin wind are all easier on the Singer Patch.

The associate at Joann was extremely patient and answered my many questions. I’m happy with my purchase.

I’ve been after a machine that would let me go further in my hobby of quilting and the Singer Patchwork has done that. I’ve never tried appliqué but found it to be a breeze with this machine. Easy to thread up and with all the different feet that came with it I’m sure to find many new projects to do along with my quilt making.

Love the needle down option, definitely very helpful in my quilt block piecing. Have yet to try all the stitches out but the few that I’ve done on a sample piece of material are just adorable. I purchased a ex-display model and I’m very happy with the saving I made and especially happy with the sewing machine.

Great machine and I’m looking forward to many years of fun and creativity with my Singer Patchwork sewing machine.

What I love most about this machine is the top loader, which takes the pain out of sewing. I love the black vintage look, sturdiness, and so easy to use. My teen I will be sharing until she gets the hang of it, and I will purchase a Janome HD 3000BE for her.

I also like that it is not digital, as don’t want to deal with any technical problems after 8 hours at work. The manual has super easy instructions. I recommend, and a good investment.

So, I actually have the Brother CS5055 model, which is very similar to this model. I am pretty sure the model that I own just doesn’t have the Project Runway logo on it, and that’s really the only difference? Anyway, I always recommend this sewing machine to people that want to learn how to sew.

I am not a sewing expert myself, but I know a reliable machine when I use one. Also, I want to advise not letting the fact that it is a computerized sewing machine scare you away! You are probably only going to use five stitches, but the extra options are fun to experiment with.

It’s pretty easy to set up straight out the box in my opinion. The instructions they give you in the box are very helpful, and I remember looking up a video for a step only once. After the initial setup, it becomes like second nature to get the sewing machine ready.

I’ve never had a problem with how my stitches came out unless it was my own fault. In my opinion, I can see this machine lasting me for years, and I think it’s a good mid-level sewing machine for beginners.

If you are thinking about being serious about sewing, then skip out on the sewing machines that are under $100. Save the headache, get this $150 sewing machine instead, and you will not regret it!.

This is by far the worst sewing machine I’ve ever used in my life. It constantly jams, stitching is not tight no matter what setting the tension is on, the stitching is unconsistant and looks absolutely horrible.

Half of the functions on the machine will not work and there is absolutely no professional customer service for this company. The first move for the customer service seems to be blaming and then comes rubing their experiences in your face, they will not listen to what is going on with your machine.

The end result is a headache and a loss of money. Stay far away from Brother products if you are a serious adult that needs well made products that honestly work.

The feed is great, which is the reason for the 2 stars. However, there are really no other redeeming factors about this machine. My biggest gripe is the tension on the machine. It’s very difficult to get the needle tension to cooperate with the bobbin tension.

The machine also stopped grabbing the zigzag stitches, which even more so reinforces a problem the machine seems to have with its timing. The stitches are also uneven, especially if you change speeds mid-sew.

A sewing machine should not do that, despite the speed. You also control the speed entirely with the foot pump, which I don’t care for either. Personally, I’m not too concerned about the stitch selection, but more the quality of the stitches the machine produces (because otherwise, what’s the point of the sewing machine) and this machine isn’t it.

I would spring for a machine that costs a bit more, but can actually do the job.

Bought my HD4452 in March of 2021. Worked great for a while. This machine has less than 15 hours on it, but quit functioning properly; skipped stitches, birds nest on bottom of stitch, etc. I’m using Singer needles, thread and bobbins.

The tension is set properly. The bobbin works as it should, the needle doesn’t always pick up the thread. Seems like timing, right? nope, I had to remove the plate to clear the birds nest and observed the “hook”.

Timing was spot on and picks up the thread without the plate, but mostly won’t with the plate back on. OK, a product may have an issue, it happens, but here’s what I discovered: The warranty only covers “mechanical” for 90 days.

Singers web site shows a repair/warranty center in Southern California “Singer Sewing Center of Orange County”, that relocated, dropped Singer from it’s name, and no longer sells or advertises warranty services for Singer products.

Singer Customer Care provided this response: “Robert, They are a small location and if everyone is with customers or working on machines, they do not get to the phones. Sometimes the voice mail gets full and you will get some unusual recording that it is no longer a working number.

The location is still one of our warranty centers. I would encourage you to keep trying. They are closed on Mondays. I am sorry for the inconvenience you have experienced. You will need to have your purchase receipt and fill out the attached form when taking your machine to be repaired.

Thank you for choosing Singer. ” So keep trying a location that moved, dropped Singer from their name, stopped selling or advertising Singer products and services, and sells competitor products, and is too small or busy to help you anyway? Really? Seems Singer is headed the way of Montgomery Wards, Sears, and a host of other companies no longer in business.

Once the standard for sewing, my experience is the stanard of how NOT to provide Customer Care.

This machine is excellent for slipcovers as it does not shake my card table when sewing fast or over heavy fabrics. HOWEVER, it doesn’t make adequate buttonholes. The instructions are poor, both in the manual and online YouTubes.

More importantly, there is a design flaw in the push bar that descends from the body of the machine as well as in the buttonhole foot attachment. First, I had to reset the device by dialing back to the straight stitch to the buttonhole stitch for each new buttonhole.

Second, I had to hold the push bar back when starting or the machine would not advance to the second position. Third, I had to then let the push bar go, or the second position continued indefinitely.

Fourth, if I pushed and let go at precisely the right times, the completed buttonhole was too small for the button positioned on the buttonhole foot. Fifth, if the buttonhole foot is extended out to its maximum position (only about an inch), the completed buttonhole is still inadequate for a 3/4 inch button to pass through easily.

So don’t buy this machine if you are planning to make clothes with buttonholes.

I was very excited to get this machine only to use it for about 6 weeks and it broke, sadly I did not use the machine right away and when I inquired into what was wrong with it and if it was covered by the warranty they stated that the HEAVY DUTY LINE are only warrantied for 90 days.

It is disappointing considering that the problem the machine is having is mechanical and after narrowing it down it was like this from the time I bought it and was just going to “go anytime” I was lucky that it lasted 6 weeks.

SIX WEEKS for a machine that we paid $264. 99 for. SIX WEEKS! I had a lot of hopes for this machine. Considering it is sold as a more powerful machine, and called “HEAVY DUTY” you would expect that it would be able to out preform the basic machines you can get for so much cheaper.

It broke while sewing CHIFFON. It is literally the most ridiculous thing I have ever experienced. This was my birthday present and it feels like $264. 99 down the drain on a Heavy Duty paper weight. I cannot afford to spend extra money to fix a machine that should have lasted FAR FAR FAR longer then 6 weeks.

If you do decide to buy this Heavy Duty Paper Weight make sure you use it right away and use it a lot don’t just repair a hem on a t-shirt and take a break from sewing for almost a year because of your health.

Make sure you use it. Use it a lot for those for 90 days and make sure it is not going to crap out on you. Now let’s get back to the “help” that I received. I emailed about the machine, and got a really fast response from them the very next morning and I was very impressed.

I sent a video of what was wrong and she responded back with you need to clean your machine. (40 years of sewing here. I clean my machine. I do understand that not everyone may do this though so I gave her the benefit of the doubt.

Told her it was cleaned. ) She said that I needed to remove the bobbin casing. NOW here is where it gets interesting. I have not been able to remove my bobbin casing ever for that machine. I just used compressed air and the brush to clean around it the best I could.

I thought it was strange that it didn’t come out but I was using a front loading bobbin machine for the last 20 + years so new technology brings changes I thought that this machine just had a non-removable bobbin casing.

Finally after my husband using a great deal of force he was able to get the bobbin casing out. I am HAPPY to report that I did a decent job at keeping it clean and there was really not much under there.

I made a new video showing it removed. and sent it in with the noise still happening. (metal hitting metal basically) She responds with basically a sorry I cannot help you, you need to take it to one of our service centers and there is not one in your state.

(Alaska) I inquire as to the warranty and cost to repair and she just said it is not covered. (see above. ) So anyways very long story short. Singer has gone down hill. I don’t think I will ever buy another Singer product.

I am disappointed that something that is so clearly mechanical is just brushed off and told sorry you have to pay to have it repaired. By all means by this machine if you want to roll the dice and possibly get stuck with a repair bill from a machine that should have been built better.

I am completely new to sewing and the use of a machine and wanted something that had excellent top quality features without the bulk of a large machine and this one has turned out to be a dream so far.

It is compact and much lighter than others I’ve looked at and has so many great features that are both high end and easy for beginners like me to understand. I really like the LED lighting which is nice and bright and helpful for someone like me who has vision issues.

I also like that it has twin needles. It has a nice little storage compartment that I was able to put the items that came in the box and some other things. The automatic needle threader is an absolute life saver and saves me time and the front loading bobbin as well because it’s easy to use and helps keep the surface smooth.

It has 24 built in stitches to allow you a range of different techniques on different types of fabrics and the variable stitch length gives you the distance needed to do short or long range stitching effortlessly.

It’s really nice that it has a 4 step buttonhole with the steps clearly outlined on the dial for easy learning and use. There is a cool reverse lever that actually lets you sew in reverse too, which I haven’t had the opportunity to try yet.

You can easily slide off the accessories compartment for free arm designing and gives you more access to work on smaller type projects. You can also drop the feeds to sew in free motion which is nice.

The construction of this machine is made super durable and long lasting with a metal frame that is heavy duty but yet lighter weight. I have only worked on several very easy projects just to get some use time and learn the machine but I’m very happy that my experience has been so easy because the machine is super easy to learn and pretty much does all the work for me.

A nice price point too I might add.

i purchased this in july. it worked great at first. it is not good in my opinion if you want to sew through multiple layers of fabric. i have so many problems with my bobbin thread bunching up or my top thread breaking in the middle of a seam.

now my thread is getting caught on my bobbin holder and not tighting properly. idk if its a tension problem because i was able to sew regular seams with no problems. i am a rather new sewist, so it might be me but i just have not had a good experience with this machine.

i always end up finishing by hand which negates the purpose of buying a machine. i think if you dont sew very often, it will be fine. i like that it has so many stitch options, threading is easy, when it does work it sews nicely, and generally the features are ok.

I’m glad I able to give this machine a try because I want to start my teenage daughter with a simple sewing machine that can used without a hassle. This machine is easy to use, it can be used with beginners to pro sewing.

It has 24 stitches you can choose from to mend any fabric. It also have four sewing feet, front loading bobbin, and needle threader. On the machine it’s has great features like the led lighting which make it easier to sew and thread the needle, automatic 4 step button hole, free arm to sew hems and cuffs with a breeze, and drop feed that allows multiple sewing applications.

Did I mention it comes with 25 year limited warranty. Perfect machine to tackle on any task.

Horrible machine. I’ve tried about a dozen when teaching kid’s sewing classes. This machine is great if you want to discourage sewing. Of those 12, about half would not work at all right our of the box.

I could get a few working with effort. Those that did work were hard to thread, have few controls and no light (have they added a light, yet? ). I’ve dealt with two other owners trying to fix them when the timing was off.

I’ve been working with machines for a few decades and have only seen one other machine that had a timing issue.

The name doesn’t lie! This sewing machine is super easy to use. I am a beginner with very little experience previous to buying Janome. The instructions poster that is comes with is helpful but watching a video on how to thread a bobbin was more useful.

I feel like I will have this sewing machine for years to come. It doesn’t have too many stitching options but that is okay. It comes with other presser feet ( I am assuming for zippers and rolled hems?)I feel like I got the best machine to start growing my sewing skills on.

I have really enjoyed my machine! I was concerned about the quality of this machine. When I received it I fell in love with it right away. I had a piece of material and decided to give it a try. I made a cute apron and was VERY pleased with the way this machine worked! It had some fancy stitches that I tried out and was so pleased with the ease they worked.

I am very glad I purchased this machine. I know I made the right choice!! I will definitely recommend this machine !!!.

I bought this machine for my 8 year old grand daughter as a Christmas present in December 2020, because she wants me to teach her to sew. This past week that we took the machine out of the box. I have to say, for the most part I am well pleased with this machine.

I have several machines and I love Brother. This machine in my opinion is THE BEST for beginners. I do have a couple of negatives about it, but will get to that shortly. First of all, the machine stitched like a dream right out of the box.

Stitches are even and tension is great. The machine boast 17 stiches, when in reality it is about 15, including buttonhole stitch. Totally basic stitch settings. A basic sewer could actually use this machine for everything for a life time.

I would recommend this machine to anyone that is wanting to learn to sew, no matter the age. Now, the negatives of this machine, and these may be negatives due to the fact that I have sewn for years and with different machines.

The machine has no setting to control the needle position. It will move with the zig zag setting, but no way to change the position while sewing a straight stich. Minimal settings for stitch length as well.

The machine’s lighting is poor, we had to set up a light behind the machine. The poor lighting makes it very difficult to see the various marking for seam widths. I ended up placing a piece of colored tape along the 5/8″ marking to make it easier for her to see, but this will makes it difficult when she needs to use a different seam width.

The foot pedal is the only way to control the speed too. If you have ever sewn with a child or teen you will understand that problem. A piece can be removed for a limited free arm use. No compartment for storage.

You will need to leave a good length of thread tail because it pulls it up when you put the needle down like crazy. We spent most of our time with me rethreading the machine. I purchased this machine through Walmart Online, cost was $76 and was delivered to my house free.

Great for us, we live in a rural mountain area. The machine is white with blue design.

I just bought this machine and love how easy it was to thread. I started using it within minutes of opening the box and within an hour I made curtains and pillows. I had a previous machine that I did not use in many years because it was so difficult to thread.

I sold that one and bought this one and I’m glad I did. I look forward to using all the different stitches to make quilts and other items. I’ve been using the machine for about 2 months now and I’ve been having problems with any heavier fabric.

The machine easily sews lightweight fabric but anything heavier, such as denim, it can’t sew, it also can’t sew folded over seams if they are slightly heavier. The thread keeps coming out and the needle can’t go through the fabric.

I wish I would have gotten a better machine. It’s been very frustrating.

This is a fantastic machine. I’ve been sewing my entire life, both as a profession and for personal use. I have several sewing machines, each for different purposes. I’ve always trusted Brother sewing machines.

I learned how to sew on one when I was 5 years old. I have a simple Brother that has done me well for more than 15 years. But it finally started to have problems. I wanted a plain straight needle machine, not one of the computer ones that does everything.

This one looked similar to my previous one. I am quite pleased with this machine. I highly recommend it. It is a great beginner machine, as well as for an expert like me.
