Great book. Short and direct. An overview and dive into what made a man throughout history, certain inter gender dynamics and hierarchy. Overall a very nice read! Loved the book!

It is a very insightful reading of the history of masculinity. Great for anyone working with groups of men, or young boys looking to understand themselves better.

Well written. Sociologically raw.

I wasn’t impressed by the book. That started off with knowing the geography of the area. The author suggests that floods would cause that part of Canada to wash into Vermont, but Vermont is uphill from Canada! Later in the book, it seemd to me that the author couldn’t make up her mind as to where the story was going.

Another riveting novel in the series with Inspector Gamache is my review of the 15th book about the characters in the Quebec village of Three Pines and the Surete du Quebec. The people in the stories are just as lifelike and charismatic as they were in the other novels.

There is a reality here of life as we know it as difficult and challenging, but with the hope of the counterbalance of the love and caring of family and friends healing the wounds. Louise Penny takes you farther into this world of murder and mystery than many of the other writers in this genre.

Loved the series at first but it should have ended 2 books ago. The plots are great. The descriptions are awesome but. It could be that while I love the way Penny writes , I despise her hero Gamache & his wife and Clara the artist.

They are exactly what their detractors in the series say they are so I have no empathy for them. I do love Ruth the poet & Jean Guy. Its time for Gamache to retire and Penny to start a new book or series.

I have a wonderful book to review today: 7 Men and the Secret of Their Greatness by Eric Metaxas. My first experience with Eric Metaxas was a children’s book he wrote about Squanto, the Indian who helped the Pilgrims survive in the new year.

He revealed what most historians leave out today about this amazing man. The next time I heard about him was on the Veggie Tale’s DVD about Esther. It’s obvious that Metaxas has an incredible ability to bring to life the great people of history.

And he has absolutely done that with his new book 7 Men and the Secret of Their Greatness. Metaxas spends one chapter with each of these men: George Washington, William Wilberforce, Eric Liddell, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jackie Robinson, John Paul II, and Charles Colson.

I was riveted reading about these men and aspects of their lives I had never heard before. I loved learning about how their great faith in God got them through extraordinarily difficult circumstancesleading the American army in war, fighting against powerful men to end the slave trade, living in a Japanese concentration camp in China, hoping to survive a German concentration camp after plotting to assassinate the evil Hitler, holding his tongue against blatant racism so he could pave the way for future African Americans to integrate into American society, hiding his studying to be a priest while under German occupation during the war, and surviving prison while serving a sentence for breaking the law and then finding numerous ways to help prisoners for the rest of his life.

Each chapter had enough that I really felt like I was beginning to know the person, but not a full biography. Metaxas has written full books about both William Wilberforce and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. I was so inspired by these seven great Christian men.

They weren’t perfectfar from it in factbut they all had strong courage and perseverance which came through their relationship with Jesus Christ. I am now excited to meet them all in heaven one day! “7 Men And The Secret Of Their Greatness” was written by Eric Metaxas. The author is a best selling author who has written several biographies incliding “Bonhoeffer”. The author has chosen 7 men to serve as role models for men and those becoming men.

We all need role models to inspire us and young people today certainly need men of great character and purpose to look up to. Many of the roles models today; athletes and movie stars don’t cut it. Many of them don’t even want to be role models.

I learned much about the seven men who were chosen as the role models for this book. For instance I didn’t know that Eric Little became a missionary. It was very a very interesting read. The 7 men written about are: 1.

George Washington 2. William Wilberforce 3. Eric Liddell 4. Dietrich Bonhoeffer 5. Jackie Robinson 6. Pope John Paul II 7. Charles W. Colson While the choosing of the 7 men are the author’s prerogative, not all of them would have been mine.

I would not have chosen Pope John Paul II, but I am an evangelical Christian. I also would not have chosen Chuck Colson, although he was a great man. I can think of others I would place ahead of him.

But again, this is personal opinion. The reader would have his own ideas and I think this debate makes it even more interesting. I recommend this book to any man and think it would be very helpful for those approaching manhood to read.

Character is the need of the hour and the secret to greatness.

This books takes us through the lives of seven different men who for different reasons are remembered for their greatness. What makes this such a valuable book is that they are great because of their humility and their faith.

They dared to go against what their human nature would dictate and as the intro says “surrendering themselves to a higher purpose, of giving something away that they might have kept. “. This takes courage and is worth imitating in our own lives.

I happened to be doing a study on Hebrews while reading this book and it struck me that these men have what Hebrews 13:7 says “Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.

“(NASB) Mr. Metaxas does a fantastic job with this book as each chapter is a mini-biography of the seven men’s lives. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I believe I will refer to it often.

This a a foundational read for anyone who wants to be challenged by their current situation. Frankl found meaning to life everyday, when he faced death every minute in Auschwitz. Through life challenges, thats where we find the strength to live.

The meaning to life is not in our material, but in our own spirit and determination.

I have wanted to read this book for years because I’ve heard so many good things about it, so I finally bought it and dove right into reading it. I was sorely disappointed, I ended up only getting half way through the book before I decided not to finish it.

I didn’t enjoy the way it was written. I didn’t feel like it flowed very well and I didn’t enjoy the way the author told his story. It wasn’t engaging or inspirational to me like “The Hiding Place” or “The Choice” were.

I have read this book four tmes and each time I find it to be even more engaging and enlightening. Thirty years ago I taught in a men’s prison in Hawaii. I passed around two copies of this book to my inmates.

It was so applicable to their situation. This is the fifth time I have purchased this book because I lend it to friends and then they lend it to friends. Well worth the purchase price which is very reasonable.

Being a pretty young villain from suburbs of Russia, and living most of my life in a country where schools are very nationalistic contemplated poetry that I’ve read only to national literature and Russian classic (ex-ussr).

Even through english is my 3rd language I’ve had pleasure learning it from mass media and online games throughout my 13-18 years of life. Sometime ago I went on to change my priorities, my views. I’ve heard about this book approximatelly 7-8 years ago, back when I was watching TV series “Lost”.

Back then it didn’t mean anything to me as I was too young to open my mind to something so new and uncommon. A few weeks ago I ordered this book, and two days ago I started reading it. From the very first page I was sucked into it so deep that I’ve spent 6 hours reading it with the help of a vocabulary.

It was a harsh path, but after understanding every single word and emotions of the author I’ve understood that J. Steinbeck is the writter to go for everyone who is trying to get a different view on life and understand the beauty of something so different.

I will not go into the details of the scenario so I don’t spoil the pleasure for everyone who hasn’t had the opportunity to go through it yet. Characters of this book are not very emotional, they’re not sci-fi.

They’re just as real as they can be. This book speaks a lot about the harsh path of people living differently from the community of big cities. The way it’s written blowed me away. After reading a lot of Russian classics, such as Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Pushkin I felt no regrets after trying something that is out of my comfort zone.

Being specific, every book is a matter of taste. I am myself a person with deep understanding of psychology and philosophy, as well as great skills in Engineering which I am currently studying for as my bachelor’s degree.

This book has everying that pleases my mind. Liars, upstarts, curators, wise and calm, innocent and stupid, as well as “simple” characters. Most of them have same ambitions, but all in all they’re represented in every single possible way.

Words that are used here make the book have it’s own life, so influencing that even a person who didn’t like rereading the book again is currently doing it now just to go through the amazement and beauty of it for another time.

There’s a reason Steinbeck got a nobel prize for his works, and after reading this piece of art I understood that he deserved it. Book is short, but it does what it has to – influence a person, transfer emotions, feelings and teach someone to be less cynical and more open-minded.

Not a must-read for everyone, but definitely is one for everyone who wants to feel ashamed for some people while being proud for the actions of some simple, but extremely courageous ones.

The novel opens with two workers who are crossing the country on foot to find work. George is a cynical, irresolute man. George looks after his companion, Lennie–treating him like a brother. Lennie is a giant man of incredible strength, but has a metal disability that makes him slow-to-learn and almost child-like.

George and Lennie had to flee the last town because Lennie touched a woman’s dress and he’d been accused of rape. They begin to work at a ranch, and they share their dream: they want to own their own piece of land and farm for themselves.

These people–like them–feel dispossessed and unable to control their own lives. The ranch becomes a microcosm of the American underclass at that time. The climactic moment of the novel revolves around Lennie’s love of soft things.

He pets the hair of Curley’s wife, but she gets scared. In the resulting struggle, Lennie kills her and runs away. The farmhands form a lynch mob to punish Lennie, but George finds him first. George understands that Lennie cannot live in the world, and he wants to save him the pain and terror of being lynched, so he shoots him in the back of the head.

The literary power of Of Mice and Men rests firmly on the relationship between the two central characters, their friendship and their shared dream. These two men are so very different, but they come together, stay together, and support each other in a world full of people who are destitute and alone.

Their brotherhood and fellowship is an achievement of enormous humanity. They sincerely believe in their dream. All they want is a small piece of land that they can call their own. They want to grow their own crops, and they want to breed rabbits.

That dream cements their relationship and strikes a chord so convincingly for the reader. George and Lennie’s dream is the American dream. Their desires are both very particular to the 1930’s but also universal.

This is required reading for my incoming freshman and assigned as a summer homework project, I purchased from Target for the best price vs other retailers (including bookstores). This specific copy is a smaller book.

My child’s assignment included critical reading involving note taking in the margins. With such a small profile, there simply isn’t enough room to take the required notes. I suggest buying a different version/edition of this book if your child has a similar assignment.

Excellent book for dating and marriages!!! We read it for our 30th anniversary but my husband said it would have been great if someone had given it to us while we were dating! I agree! The man and woman’s books were both excellent!!.

I started reading this book as a part of a church couples’ series. The insight provided is an eye-opener! I remember telling an airport shuttle bus full of guys about the “windows. ” They all let out a collective “ahhh!” I lost/misplaced the book in my travels/movements while my better half left her “For Women Only” with a close friend.

I purchased another copy to refresh my mind.

Very interesting studies of what women are thinking. I don’t agree with all of it but in general it’s good reading for men in relationships. Shows where they may be misinterpreting a women’s behavior and responses.

This is a fantastic history, story and Man. Pat Tillman is a true patriot. He was an open minded young man who respected and loved everyone. He chose service over gain. I was in Afghanistan at the time of his death and it was a true tragedy of war.

His life and death represent well the challenges that are faced during war, a time when all are doing their best to serve the country and purpose they are sworn to defend. The book touches on how difficult and complicated this can be.

It also brings to light the love of a family and their loss in these grave events. An outstanding book that will touch you and educate you on the intricacies of a very well lived and committed life.

Krakauer has a talent for writing what at first seems like a biography for a limited subject, but ends up using it as a starting point for much larger issues. Into Thin Air was just as much about the Everest Disaster as it was about the culture of mountaineering to a place human beings were never meant to visit on foot.

Under the Banner of Heaven was ostensibly about a terrible double murder in the American West but was much more a detailed and contextual history of the Mormon faith. As is with Where Men Win Glory. On its face, Krakauer tells the story of how an unremarkable athlete with a solid conscience set out to do something greater for the country he loved, and wound up being wholly exploited by his government following his death at the hands of his own countrymen.

But much of the book acts as a detailed history of how Afghanistan got to the state it was by the mid-2000’s. An excellent read. Couldn’t put it down.

I am a United States Marine mortarman and machine gunner by trade. I have been reading Krakauer’s Where Men Win Glory” and I have blasted through it up until Chapter 31 pages 274 and 275 where I had to stop find this page on the internet and tell everyone who reads this that Krakauer sold Alders out.

I don’t know what I’ll read past these pages but I will finish the book. And I speak for men who have been in combat and have seen people die when I say Krakauer is nothing but an auther by the way he revealed these facts with regard to how Alders mistakenly killed Tillman.

By any warrior’s standards I love Tillman and I will always love Alders. Reading Krakauer’s book I understand what an exceptional person Tillman was but he was also an exception to the military especially the small fraction of the most elite forces who realize early in life that they can forego the toughtest punishments life can throw at them because they perhaps think they already have by the way the were raised and the life experiences they have already encountered.

Krakauer is an author; Alders is a warrior. Krakauer will keep writing but Alders is an American who has to keep living. Krakauer your ability to write non-fiction and do research to deliver an amazing read is really impressive; but you sold Alders out.

You admit even Tillman liked him. So stick to being a civilian author; and don’t past judgement on men in combat. God bless you. Semper Fi. “.

The One Man, I thought was well written. The theme was unusual in that the old man, at the beginning was relating his life story,but at the end revealing it was himself who encounted the hardships and hazards in conveying the critical information to America.

The story was quite confronting in the treatment of the Jews in the concerntration camp. It was quite sad in parts, yet suspenseful. The plot in many ways was similar to Andrew Cross’s novel Saboteur and probably because of this the “escape” was somewhat predictable.

It was a great read,I enjoyed it and recommend others to do so as well. George Phelps.

Literally started reading it last night. About 25% of the way through and enjoying it very much.

Great book! Came in a little later than expected but all is good. It was in perfect condition. Worth every penny!

• Well written and full of UNEXPECTED twists that I haven’t seen yet; I could NOT guess the ending at all, which is a first for me as well. • Even though it’s a 500 page book- it leaks sophistication, beautiful detail and plenty to keep the hooks digging in deeper with each page.

👎🏼 WHAT I DIDNT:• The ONLY thing I found difficult was the amount of characters involved- keeping up with the names, But I eventually caught on 😅 Do NOT let the 500 pages scare you. It’s doesn’t drag and there plenty of grotesque details.

I read a lot of books & psychological thrillers are my favorite genre. I found this book while researching for a new book to read. I took a chance on it & was not let down. It is a fast paced, nail biting thrill ride from start to finish.

This novel is America’s best novelist’s best novel. No Country For Old Men is entertaining and exciting. It paints a true picture of 1980’s West Texas. The characters are spot-on, the plot is original and interesting.

I’m reminded of a famous Texas movie critic’s remarks concerning as to why the motion picture industry is so interested in Texas: because evil thrives in Texas. In No Country For Old Men, as in real life: evil thrives in Texas.

First let me say that my opinion is currupted having seen the movie prior to reading the book. I have to say that I enjoyed the movie better as it gave a darker view of the story and the acting was outstanding.

Without giving any spoilers, I will say that the book varies somewhat from the movie and does provide a few more answers to questions that I had after watching it. There was a balance of characters that had more of a roll in the book but less or not at all in the movie.

The book stayed true to the main characters overall but I thought the book made Anton’s character seem a bit more human (if thats possible) than the movies depiction of him being this evil, almost ghost of a man.

I was not crazy about the authors style of writing when he was giving descriptions of things or actions of the characters but enjoyed the vocabulary used by all as I have lived in the southwest and I am also a lawman which the latter made me able to relate to Sheriff Bell.

I kind of feel the same way he does sometimes. Anyway, I can go on and on but will say that I probably would have given 4 stars if I had not been spoiled by the Cohen Brothers film. (I’m a big fan of thiers) That being said, if you can do so, read the book first then definitely see the movie.

Seller was amazing, really quick. Really good price on the book. The book itself was awful but that is my opinion. The English language used is very Southern American and is just really bad. I wonder if people actually talk like that, or used to, because it is just ridiculous.

I found it very distracting, I think the story might be good but I just wasn`t able to get into it as the bad grammar was very hard to read.

The book is about a grumpy old man called Ove, who wakes up every day to end his life because he is all alone after passing away of his wife, but each day something or the other happens which makes him to postpone his resolve.

Ove has hard time coming to terms with people around because he doesn’t like people much and he reluctantly help others because he is literally dragged into such situations where he has the least say (even if he does have a say, it is mostly overruled by himself ).

But still he does. Though he might be sulky but he possess a loving and kind heart which keeps in mind the memories of his wife Sonja and tries to do as he think she would have liked him to do. The narrative of the story is crisp with dollops of good humor, which makes it a very gripping read.

The experience is almost that of watching a movie, it is so vivid I could visualize it for the entire length. But I felt that this book was really much more than just a story of an old man coming to terms with his life.

It was also about the notion of giving because living is not merely about what we can take from life, it is also about what we can give it back. To receive happiness and kindness in one’s life is blissful but to be able to give it to those in need brings a tranquility, which can make the life more meaningful.

I strongly believe that this process is cyclical. A giver gives and the receiver receives and the cycle moves on and in the process the giver also becomes a receiver. I felt this book very elegantly brings this about, focusing on the inherent goodness, all the while also managing to be light and humorous.

This story follows a grumpy, VERY stubborn old man named Ove – pronounced “oo-vuh” who is set in his ways.

As Ove’s story unfolds, you learn about his childhood, his loves and losses, along with everything else that comes to eventually define him. My three words to describe Ove are: hardworking, honest, and hardheaded.

This wonderful novel touches on the different stages of life, love, and loss. It was a bittersweet reminder that tomorrow isn’t promised and that things can change in the blink of an eye. Backman perfectly depicts the loneliness and feeling of irrelevance that often comes with old age.

This sweet but incredibly heartbreaking book holds such a special place in my heart. Fredrik Backman is one of best writers EVER. His novels always leave me thinking about the storyline and characters long after I’ve finished the book.

He is a literary genius and his writing style is perfection. One of the best things about his works are the characters and this was also true for Ove. I laughed so much reading this one but it definitely also tugged hard on the heartstrings.

The change in pace throughout the story was amazing and the character development was incredible. You can’t help but fall in love with all of the characters in this book!.

Going into this based on everything I heard I had expected Ove to be something along along the lines of Scrooge from A Christmas Carol; a grumpy old timer that discovers he has a big heart. It turns out Ove has always had a big heart; he is just strong willed and strong principled and doesn’t put up with any nonsense! His interactions with the other characters are hilarious and heartwarming; especially with Parvaneh and her children, and the cat of course! Ove has easily become one of my favourite all time characters and I didn’t want this book to end.

I have watched the movie “Courageous” (2011) from which this book is based from. The importance of this book is that it raises the awareness of the husbands responsibility of being a man, protector, teacher, godly husband and dad.

If you are interested in taking a step forward into becoming more godly in your relationships I recommend watch the movie first and then read this book. Another resource I would recommend is “Disciplines of a Godly Man” by R.

Kent Hughes. I have also found this to be a great resource in helping me to change myself so that I can become who God has called me to be in Jesus Christ. It is hard work to fight against bad habits and damaging ideologies, but well worth it if becoming a better follower of Christ.

This is an awesome book to help men step up, whether they are single or married, with or without kids at home. The authors have done a fantastic job showing how to build a marriage based on honor as well as how to raise children who are honorable.

If you have ever seen the movie “Courageous” and loved it, then this book is for you. If you haven’t seen the movie, then do! The world would be such a better place if every man read and practiced the values in this book!.

This is one of the best books on manhood that I have ever read and I have read quite a number of them. This week I start my 6th reading. Besides reading it I have used it to teach other men as well as use it for jail ministry.

There are lots of good features like how to pray for your wife and children.

Was told about this book by a colleague; it is classed as a children’s book by an author I have never read previously. Found a copy on the WOB site and decided to try it; surprised how much I enjoyed reading it.

My copy stays by my Bible study area. I bought on for my daughter this Christmas. I wanted to see how the Disciples spread the Good News after Christ disappeared into the clouds. Each story was enlightening.

I use it over and over.

I purchased the ebook version of this book because it will be delivered without people touching my merchandise, easy, and cost effective. I enjoy reading this ebook in my spear time on my cellphone and other electronic devices.

An easy, interesting read with many facts I didn’t know before. I thought it was very well written. I downloaded the ebook, but later ordered a paperback copy for my adult son. The book would be a nice gift.

Item as described (cover how described too!!), Other than a bend at the back the book is good, even with bends doesn’t take away from experience. Can easily be fixed with weighting. I reckon if you want a pristine version, you may have to look for good as new or another place (it may be way more expensive, especially if you arent in the UK).

Recommend for people who don’t have access to UK prints and want the collection of prettier versions of the books!.

Was so glad to find this book, and thrilled that the book was in such great condition. This is he second novel in the Witcher series (not including the two collections of short stories) and makes a great sequel to Blood of Elves.

I love the Witcher series I recommend this series of books to anyone. The Witcher series has already has video game’s based on the books, but the Netflix series starts on December 17th. I wanted to read the book series before the Netflix series started very worth it.

I haven’t finished reading the book yet but so far I am thoroughly enjoying this book again. I was excited to see an updated version. I read this book 9 years after being with my boyfriend for a year to gain insight on how God created men.

Now we are 8 years married with two boys 3 years old and 1 year and 1/2. I wanted a refresher of this book. Reading through it is helping me shape my boys the way the Lord created them to be without being extremely cautious and knowing what to allow them to do especially at this age.

They are both so different yet adventurous. I long not to be the overwhelming super protective mom that will not let them breathe and explore. So I am using the book as a guide along with my husband -haha to help me out.

Similar to John Eldredge’s other bestseller “Beautiful Outlaw” in its approachable style, and based on his counseling practice, Wild at Heart is amazing insight into a man’s world – especially for me as a woman.

I couldn’t put it down. And like his other works, no heavy-handed, boring, religious tedium. I do differ with those (all men) that criticize it, falsely claiming the author promotes a caveman outdoorsman lifestyle as the only way to express masculinity.

In all Eldridge’s books you do get to know him as an outdoors loving guy but there are equal numbers of other professions.

John Eldredge, author of the book Wild at Heart strikes the core, with many societal issues that males face today. As a Psychologist, counseling innumerable men, Eldredge attests to the issues plaguing our nations young males.

Addressing these key points for parents raising their son(s) in preparation for the world and in being a Godly man. The main focus conveyed is the lack of masculinity taught within the church, which is leading in a decay of future Christian leaders.

As Eldredge stated the way Jesus is thought in church today is conveyed as Mr. Rogers with a beard, seemingly content in a perfect world. In turn creating a generation of Christian men who are week and apathetic to many of the sins around them, incapable of leading effectively.

Eldredge ties in a practical understanding of emotional wounds that many men experience in life as a result of flawed parenting. This aids in the understanding of many men and the mannerisms that surround them both good and bad.

Although this is useful in understanding ones own behaviors, they are better understood as a cause and effect aid for parents. The characteristic of Eldredge writing is repetitive, but necessary in reinforcing the message that is conveyed.

With bombardment in social media portraying men and husbands as weak and incompetent Eldredge must break this perception. The conclusion, effectively establishes being wild at heart. And it is not being insubstantial in relationships, work, and overall life.

But putting aside emotions, thinking with his head and being a leader in his relationships, work, and life. Men are not born, but made starting in childhood, having a solid foundation to grow on.

Strongly recommend. Easy read. Author presents 4 Maxiums/Principles for men to live by. He also portrays examples of chrarcter traits true men can live out and shows how they were lived out by men in history.

No guilt trip but an encouragement to be a man. Not a book about being a chauvinist but about what it means to be a godly man and living a life of honor that will leave a positive legacy on generations to come.

Women and society would be all the better if more men would take this book to heart.

This is such an enjoyable book! To read a book that speaks so highly of MEN is so refreshing. MEN are powerful and awesome. To raise a real man takes a real man! Dont underestimate the power of a husband to raise your little men.

Right from the get go the atmosphere is created to inspire a man to be his best. Take a journey through time and find in yourself the qualities that make a man…..a Man.

I am someone who often asks deep questions about the meaning of life. This book has paralleled those questions and given them more meaning. Viktor Frankl was not only a Holocaust survivor but a clinical psychiatrist.

He gives his own accounts of his time in a concentration camp, intriguing written from his perspective. Then he merges that in the latter half of the book with his explanations on Logotherapy, a clinical methodology he contributed to.

Humanity, good and bad is covered through the book, but I felt it had an admirable tone of perseverance and prevail of the human spirit. Matched with his contributions as a clinician. I’ve recommend this book to my family and friends.

This book is life-changing, at the very least it’s undoubtedly shifted my perspective on life and suffering. Dr Frankl writes about his time spent in concentration camps and his founding of logotherapy.

Frequently quoting Nietzsche, especially “He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how”, Frankl goes on to suggest the need or search for meaning in our lives is of the most paramount importance, and a crucial part of maintaining good mental health.

Frankly explains suffering is an inevitable part of our lives, and that regardless of the burden placed upon us, we all have the choice to accept our suffering or succumb to it. Whether we’re being a role model for others who experience the same circumstances, or use our suffering as a means to improve ourselves in different aspects of our lives, we can all find a meaning in our suffering and through finding meaning we can overcome anything.

There are quite a few concepts I learned about in this book such as paradoxical intention, the importance of meaning in our lives, as well as enduring and using our suffering for a greater good. I read this at a time when I really needed it, and this book has been a catalyst for positive change in my life.

Man’s Search for Meaning is a 1946 book by psychiatrist Viktor Frankl chronicling his experiences as an Auschwitz concentration camp inmate. Frankl and his fellow prisoners had to endure atrocities that many of us cannot even imagine.

Prisoners had to survive on one small piece of bread a day and maybe some thin soup. They had to work 20 hours each day, digging and laying railroads and so on. If you looked weak, you were beaten. If you stopped working, you were beaten.

And you didnt get much of a second chance after that. You could be killed for any reason. When suffering fills your life, what do you do? Do you take up your cross? Do you remain brave, dignified and unselfish? Or do you become no more than an animal? Most men in a concentration camps believed that the real opportunities of life had passed.

Yet, in reality, there was an opportunity and a challenge. One could make a victory of those experiences, turning life into an inner triumph, or one could ignore the challenge and simply vegetate, as did a majority of the prisoners.

What a wonderful freedom to discover that you can choose your own meaning and that meaning with keep you filled with life.

It even takes a POV of the kidnapper and killer. It begins with the abduction of a child – Neil Spencer, just like the ones some 20 years before. DI Willis has some experience there – he was the one who put Frank Carter away.

Spencer volunteers in the search for Neil. Willis is also haunted by the fact that the body of one of Carter’s victims was never found. Carter was called the “Whisper Man” due to the fact he would whisper at their windows prior to their abduction.

Tom Kennedy (a recent widower) decides that he and his son Jake need a fresh start. Interestingly it is Jake who picks the house in Featherbank after seeing it online. And, Tom hopes that once they move, things will get better.

But that doesn’t happen. Jake talks about a boy in the floor, butterflies, and then there is the strange rhyme he claims to have learned from his imaginary friend: “If you leave a door half open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken.

If you play outside alone, soon you won’t be going home. If your window’s left unlatched, you’ll hear him tapping at the glass. If you’re lonely, sad, and blue, the Whisper Man will come for you. ” After a near break-in, Tom investigates his garage and makes a gruesome discovery – one that connects with his own past and the past of DI Willis.

Then Jake starts hearing “whispers”. This was “Silence of the Lambs” with a hint of the Slender Man Urban Legend. Terrifying, riveting, and a page-turner. The readers will be surprised as to who Tom’s father is, who Jake’s imaginary friend is, and the connection between the new killer and the old one.

Tom Kennedy, and his son, Jake, move to a new town after the death of Jake’s mother. Becoming acclimated to a new town is hard for him; even harder when young boys go missing in town. ⠀ ⠀ Please be aware that I have listed trigger warnings at the bottom of this post for those who may be interested in picking this novel up.

⠀ ⠀ “The Whisper Man” is a chilling fiction thriller that follows multiple POVs, which makes the flow of the story so much better. I thought I was able to figure out “whodunnit,” and each time I thought I had it, I was blindsided.

The pacing was great; I thought it wasn’t too slow and wasn’t too fast. The only thing I wish it had more of was the thrills. While it was suspenseful, I wish it had more scary scenes. ⠀ ⠀ This is the first novel of Alex North’s that I have picked up, and I know it won’t be the last.

I have been looking forward to reading The Whisper Man by Alex North for months. and I’m happy to report that it did not disappoint! This book was amazing. disturbing and suspenseful. but utterly amazing! The writing was superb, the characters were very realistic and well-developed, and the plot moved along at a fast page-turning pace.

And as with any thriller, there was a plot/character twist but I guarantee that you won’t see it coming or be able to figure out “whodunnit. ” I don’t get scared easily but I love to psych myself out and I was able to do so from the very first page of this book.

The opening page included this creepy passage: “It’s not going to be easy, and I need to start with an apology. Because over the years I’ve told you many times that there’s no such thing as monsters.

I’m sorry that I lied. ” This book has been classified as Horror, but it isn’t really horror in the classic sense. It’s more of a psychological thriller with a touch of horror. At the same time, it’s better than most typical psychological thrillers out there.

Five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I can’t wait to see what else Mr. North has up his sleeve!.
