20 Best Self Watering Hanging Planters (2023 Updated)

I have loved GSC self watering containers from past years. I still use and recommend them even though they are more than 10 years old. However this particular hanging container is pure junk. The plastic clips that holds the hanging cord to the pot breaks easily and without warning.

The self watering feature is an inch wide strip of cloth that lays across a false bottom and the two ends tuck into the water reservoir. The pretense is the material soaks up water to the soil in order to add moisture to it.

On mine pot the strip of cloth was cut too short and it did not reach into the water reservoir leaving the plant to dry out. After a lengthy and frustrating discussion with a GSC representative, I received a new pot.

The replacement had the exact same problem! I agree with others who can’t believe GSC is still offering this “self watering” container for sale. They should be ashamed.

Needing to replace my older Gardener’s Supply baskets with identical new ones (someone tossed the inserts with the old plants last fall), I ordered 3. The first one was planted and hung up. Very nice.

However, when the third one was hung up, within 5 minutes it was upside down on the ground with crushed flowers. Turns out the original clips that attach basket to cords were changed to flimsy ones that break easily.

I quickly took down the first two to avoid the same catastrophe. Luckily, I still had the old baskets and was able to use the old cords with sturdy clips on the new baskets. The difference in clip quality was obvious.

No way can the new clips hold these baskets. Avoid these baskets until this issue is resolved.

My elderly parents bought 4 of these. One upon being hung up fell in less than two minutes. Like buttered bread, the best side down, only with smashed flowers. My inner Macgyver thought welp better grab zip ties.

These little plastic clips at the end of the hanging rope are terrible, don’t fit well into the planter and are very brittle. I can’t attest to the watering portion working well as my attention was kept on the hanging baskets actually hanging.

Within 24 hours of hanging one of these, the chain broke. Also, the little watering hole does not work well. It’s a plastic grid and water simply flows off of it unless you fill using a trickle of water.

Very nice looking and love the water measure gauge. Smaller than expected but still very nice.

We liked our first Glowpear planter for our rooftop last summer so much that we purchased another one. Both planters arrived in a timely fashion. We were able to set it up to connect with the first planter but there is something to consider when doing so.

Firstly, the screw washer popped out of the second planter when removing the “plug” to connect the two units. We had to dismantle the interior of the planter to get this back in place. There was simply a slot for it to go into and perhaps a more secure method should be used.

Thankfully we hadn’t set up the planter with dirt and plants beforehand. Secondly, when adding the plastic connector tubes between the two units, it is difficult to get these on tight without knowing which way to turn the screw head without loosening the seal; otherwise, water will drip when the planter is filled.

When you get one side connected, it is difficult to push this connector tight enough over the second set of screw heads to make a tight seal. And because these are screwed tightly, you can’t twist the connector without loosening either set of screws.

Planters seem to be working with minimal drips but something to consider improving. Here are some pics of our second starter gardens. After the tomatoes and basil went gangbusters with growth and little worry with watering, we’re looking forward to our second harvest of new vegetables.

We’d certainly recommend! These planters have enabled our city rooftop gardening capability.

I was looking for ‘Sturdy’ balcony railing planter boxes when I discovered Growpear. There were lots of boxes but none that looked like they would be as easy to install or be durable enough to take the Australia sun; that is worth the time and money.

We have extensive veggie gardens but I was looking for somewhere to plant easy access herbs; I have 2 planter boxes and they are ideal.

The unit leaks a bit, so I am going to have to fiddle with it before I move it inside. After unpacking it, I accidentally touched my lips and there was a terrible taste. There is some kind of residue on the plastic.

not sure if this will transfer to the soil. I will have to wait and see. Shipping was exceptionally slow. It took at least a week for it to leave Houzz. Once in transit, the shipping was reasonable.

This pot looks very nice, but I could never figure out why my plants were always drooping. When I dismantled the pot, I found out that the plant was bone dry and the well was full of very stagnant stinky water.

Obviously the wicking feature was not working. Have never had this problem with other well pots. I will drill some holes in this pot and throw out the well part so that I can still use the pot. Will need to water more often.

I gave these 5 stars because there is nothing wrong with the planter. They just did not work for me. I wanted to transfer a 10″ planter from its white pot into this. Waaaay too small for that. Next year, I will get combinations of smaller individual plants and use these.

EXACT SIZE I NEEDED. GOOD PRICE FOR THE PLANTER CONSIDERING THE REMOVABLE INNER PIECE AND THE GAUGE TO ALLOW YOU TO SEE IF YOU NEED OR ARE OVER WATERING THE PLANT, THE CHAIN IS PERFECTLY MEASURED. I AM LOVING IT AND WOULD PURCHASE AGAIN.

I AM USING INDOORS AND LOOKS GREAT.

Ze względu na wysokość pomieszczenia musiałem wymienić skórzany rzemień na dłuższy sznurek jutowy. Ogólnie doniczka prezentuje się bardzo ładnie :-).

I really like this planter! It’s a sturdy, quality material. I switched out the jute cord to a black metal chain to match better. My houseplants look great in it!

These are the perfect size for a hanging basket on our covered porch. Our annuals stayed healthy all summer. Highly recommend!

Look no further. This is the best indoor hanging planter. I try others and always return to this one. Good size. The self-watering feature works well. The metal strings are sturdy. My only wish is that it came in non-wicker style.

Works perfectly, wonderful quality so easy to use. I dont have to worry about my plants running out of water. Im amazed how my house plants have flourished since I started using this system I water approx once every three to four weeks in hot weather.

Love this planter. very well made. Easy to assemble (minimal assembly). Designed for good plant drainage. Solid plastic – not flimsy. Three solar panels across the top to soak up maximum power. Very cool way to light your plants at night.

Love this concept and wish you offered it in more colors besides white or black. I’d buy them.

It was a bit tricky getting the chains to stay hooked until you get some weight in it. Then it hangs up great and looks good. I filled it with greens and holly. The light works. It seems less dramatic than in the photo.

it may look brighter once all the Christmas lights in everyone’s yards are put away.

Very disappointed. The basket and all are plastic. The hooks for holding the basket up to the solar light slip out with a slight breeze thus the plants inside all fall to the ground. The hooks are thick enough but they slip out of the predrilled holes in the basket.

Not worth the money! Would not recommend this.

I love this hanging planter. I’d been looking for one for quite a while but couldn’t find one anywhere that had all of the qualities I wanted. This had the looks, the water drainage, and was the size I was looking for.

I love the stone look of it, yet it is still very lightweight. The only thing I didn’t love was how the rope attached to the bowl. The small holes in the bowl where you insert the ends of the rope weren’t completely smooth so it made it a little difficult to get the ends in, but once I managed it everything looked and felt good.

My pothos is currently a happy plant in this pot!.

I am so glad I found these. They are made really well and fit my 3 tiered wire plant stand perfectly. I used coconut fiber last year and my plants would dry out so quickly and water ran everywhere. These pots have a reservoir.

They are saving me a lot of time and they match my black stand perfectly. I would definitely buy these again!.

I’m easily confused and have very painful, weak hands. I was really hoping that this was as easy to install on my iron balcony railing as reviews were leading me to believe. luckily, I was able to both assemble and then affix the top pot to that railing without help! They are very secure once attached.

the only thing that was awkward for me was putting the soil and then the plants in after the top unit was actually hooked to the railing. that was a bit awkward but I still think it was the best option for my situation it would be more difficult for one person to try to control the position of something already filled with dirt and plants in it while trying to affix it to the railing.

Attaching a pot below the top pot is so easy its laughable! I was very relieved with the ease of the whole process! the pots are very attractive and are constructed of materials that are going to hold up just fine in the weather.

I’m absolutely thrilled with this product and will buy more next planting season.

My apartment has NO outside space for plants. I have one patio window that has waist-high bars, 1 inch from the glass, which is just enough room to set-up these planters. Arranged horizontally, each planter can hold one cherry tomato plant.

Arranged vertically, they work as an herb garden. Growing plants, especially edible plants, is therapeutic. I used UV resistant zip ties to hang them until I decide on a “permanent” location to use the metal zip ties.

I have used earth boxes for over 20 years and now living in a smaller area with a small patio, these offer similar benefits with the water reservoir. They went up easy and now hold a flower and herb combination, looks like a miniature garden hanging on my fence.

I do recommend using four 75lb zip ties instead of the metal straps sent, they will not hold well in a high wind environment. Great purchase, may get another set, 9 will circle the fence nicely :).

the hooks aren’t very strong. you have to make sure the chains are straight you also have to hold ip the lighting while hooking everything together. I do like the product just wish it had clasping mechanisms and a stronger top hook.

I have faux plants in the front of my yard and needed a new basket. I thought this would be perfect. The lights stay on all night long and look great in my pergola. It also matches the color of the garden.

I’m very disappointed with my purchase. I was so excited to receive my order but , than became upset because one planter did not have a hanging prong. one one was packed into the order when I brought a pair.

I have grown plants seriously for over 50 years, terra cotta pots were always my first choice. I liked the way they looked with plants, I liked the way they aged. However, when I moved to a colder climate I realized how heavy and cumbersome terra cotta is, especially in large sizes.

Moving massive tropical plants into the basement became backbreaking labor. I researched and found Bloem. The pots are esthetically pleasing, and in my new dryer climate, the fact that they retain moisture better than terra cotta is a real advantage.

Plants overwinter needing less water than in terra cotta. The designs with rolled rims make them easy to carry indoors in winter, and the ones that remain outdoors don’t crack during freezes. The color range is always improving, and new the designs are very attractive.

These are excellent pots for indoors or under an awning like on a patio. But if you have them away from an enclosed area with a roof, the rain will not drain from the pots and will drown your plants.

This is not a defect in the product, just a hint for those who wish to use them outdoors. My husband drilled holes in the bottom for drainage. I needed them for outdoors on an uncovered deck, and they did not work for that unless they had drainage holes.

They are easy to drill holes in if you need that. If not, they work very well indoors or under a patio roof where they do not get rain. You will need to water much less with these pots if you do not drill holes in them for drainage, obviously, and it’s tricky not to overwater them.

Pretty pots, nice quality.

This plastic imitation terra cotta-colored planter works perfect for a 6 foot tall cedar bush in front of my house. I had a clay pot for several years but it was slightly smaller and eventually cracked and fell apart over this past winter/spring.

I was reluctant to replace with plastic as I like the classic clay pots, but the large ones are now more difficult to find and they eventually break. This color looks great and still mixes well with the clay ones nearby.

We have used about 7 of these over the past 3 years; we move them from outside to inside for the winter. A couple of them have mysteriously lost their drain plugs and we cannot find good replacements.

Water gauge can also get sticky after a few seasons of use, so be sure to clean periodically. Have not had too much problem with chain breakage as long as planter can spin freely on it’s hanger/wire/hook.

It’s when it gets twisted up that problems can happen, so use a swivel-type hook or hanger if possible.

I bought three of these to replace older hanging baskets I have had in the same location for over ten years. They were hung from extremely solid brackets that have been hanging and holding baskets for over ten years.

Within two weeks all three of these pulled the brackets completely from the wall and smashed on the floor into pieces and killed all of the flowers. I am so disappointed in these. Yes it has rained a lot but they should have a way to release some water if they become to full and to heavy.

I am do mad at myself for tossing my old ones now!.

I wanted an upgrade from traditional ugly hanging baskets. Love the faux basket weave pattern on this. That’s why I purchased it, not for the self-watering feature. If you use the self-watering bottom insert, the basket does not appear to be deep enough.

So I removed the bottom plug, and potted as usual. Would love to see you offer these, perhaps less expensive, without the self-watering feature. Pretty decorative hanging basket!!.

Bought 2 for hanging on front porch. They look great and I love the solar light addition. It’s not much light but it gives a pretty glow on the plants.

It looks good, but I only had it up for 2 days, when it fell & the pot cracked. It seems the S hook was not bent enough & the pot slid right off the S hook with a little bit of a breeze. I was very disappointed.

Although this planter is overpriced I could have lived with that, since it is kind of cute, if it hadn’t arrived with many, many scratches all over the frame and sign due to very poor packing (the pieces were just thrown into the box with no protective wrappings) and to possibly add to the poor packing damage, the exterior of the box had very large tears and holes.

The bottom of the liner is shredded and has holes in it in several places and the sign was already attached with only two links, not the 7 or 8 as pictured. The plastic bag that holds the screws was taped to the inside of the box where there are holes and, it too, had a hole in it and since there were no assembly instructions I have no idea if any screws are missing.

but, it really doesn’t matter since I will not be assembling it and will be returning it and will not order another one. I suspect that, perhaps, previously owned and returned items are being reshipped and that is not acceptable.

Love my new outside ornament! I wasn’t sure what to expect from some of the comments but I love this planter! Its good quality and easy to put together. Now its time to fill the planter

This piece is very nice. It looks great at our front door and was easy to assemble. I like that the planter is raised but agree with the other review about the water leaking through. I put a clear plastic tray on the ground underneath so that the water doesn’t stain our porch.

You might want to line the coco with a tray so that the water doesn’t all drip out on the ground. Other than that, it looks classy and for that price, you can’t beat it!.
