10 Best Self Propelled Vacuum Cleaners (2023 Updated)

I’ve owned several Dyson Vacuums over the years. Saw this at my local Sam’s recently so I decided to treat myself to another because I’m a housewares junkie. First, I should say this is not my first Dyson Ball Vacuum.

The assembly was fairly easy and I was eager to try it out. I have hardwood floors plus large area rugs in my home. I started out by using the hose/wand/brush. I noticed that I couldn’t take one step without the vacuuming shooting across the floor and hitting my feet because the hose is so tight.

We have a no shoe policy inside our home so that hurts. Also, there is absolutely no way to use the hose attachment without the vacuum falling over. If I move left or right 6 inches with the hose attachment then the vacuum goes crashing down on my hardwood.

every single time. After attempting to vacuum the hardwood with the hose attachment I put the vacuum back in its normal upright position and started to vacuum my area rugs. The suction is so great that it lifts the corners of all my area rugs.

I then have to quickly shut the vacuum off to get the corner of the rug out. One rug that I have is a runner and the vacuum just sucks it up. And lastly, I noticed the electrical cord on this model is shorter than on my previous model.

I love Dyson products but I have no idea how this model made it to production. It seems like the prototype was not tested at all by anyone that vacuums their home on a regular basis. I am not sure if Sam’s will take it back as I no longer have the box.

I may just end up giving it to someone and then do further research on other vacuums. I have a 2 story home so I like having one vacuum on each floor so I don’t have to carry a vacuum up and down stairs.

I love this for regular use. It’s cleaning is superior. HOWEVER, the handle that pulls out into a hose is too long and solid. Thus, you can’t efficiently use it for anything that is not floor level or overhead.

Because of the hose length and lack of flexibility combined with the odd angles, vacuuming the couch was barely possibly; it was very difficult to do the stairs, and there’s just no way to utilize for your car.

I mean, you can stand like 6 feet back and vacuum a few spots but you’d be better off with a lint roller because the hose is so poorly engineered for these type of things. The attachment should be slick for overhead and floor level.

If I could have lifted the vacuum up to the same height of the couch, I could have vacuumed the couch with no problems. Trying to find someone to help or someway to prop of the vacuum in order to do this is rediculous.

Who would do that? I hate that I have to drag out other vacuums for all these things when this machine should be able to accomodate all the normal uses. the normal function for vacuuming is 10+ but I also hate that it tips over all of the time.

It gets easier to be able to make it stand up but it takes me a few tries every time.

Purchase this vacuum recently as replacement for my first Dyson that still runs strong after fifteen years. Rock solid but feels bulky and heavy compared to this model. Happily purchased this one a d immediately noticed the noise level was usually high.

It got worse, It now screams high pitched noises that are painful to listen. Tried checking the filter in the ball as recommended online but apparently I need to purchase a new filter for vacuum I purchased less than two months ago and maybe have completed a few sessions with where the noise was tolerable.

It this a defect? Hard to believe this would make out QC if this is by design. Picks up great but I don’t want to lose my hearing in the process. Otherwise I would be giving it five stars.

Excellent Vacuum for a fair price. I had a Dyson 17 years ago, but it eventually died. For years, I tried to convince myself that a Shark was just as good for half the price…Stumbled on this great deal after having my some of my carpet replaced and my old vacuum smelled like corn chips.

Just WOW! The filtration system alone is amazing. No more runny nose and itching eyes or throat from vacuuming!!! This picks up everything!!! And using it on some of the older carpet makes it look like it’s been steam cleaned.

I simply cannot get over the suction power of the Dyson. Also able to navigate into tough spaces and under low furniture pretty easily. Highly recommend!!! (Totally makes we want to invest in the Dyson Wrap, since I know it won’t disappoint, but definitely can’t afford right now).

This is the best deal on market. Although it costs around $290 you will still win and save a lot of money without sacrificing the quality. It comes with 5 year parts and labor warranty. It’s suction power is probably the best than any other vacuum cleaner in the world.

It ‘s the best in US and UK. It is also the fastest cleaner since it’s suction power is the best. Also comes with different toolkit for various types of clean. Carpet, wooden floor, car in the garage etc.

So, the bottom line is if you have the $300 budget, go for this one. In longer term you will win. It is a long lasting vacuum cleaner.

So I have had this vacuum for about a year now and am sorely disappointed in the way this Dyson was created. Again I will first complain about how HEAVY it is – Seriously, if you are not strong and you have more than one level in your home, reconsider before purchasing this vacuum.

Moving it up and down the stairs is a challenge – my son can’t do it and my husband complains of it’s weight when he has to so take that into consideration. My last Dyson was half this weight and still cleaned great.

Besides the weight though, I have had so a bunch of other issues with this model – some small, some not. > There are too many points where dirt gets stuck and I have to literally take half the vacuum apart to figure out where the clog is and to fix it.

This has happened to me sooooo many times and I literally have to follow the tubing to see where the issue is, sometimes it is in the wand, sometimes in the actual vacuum part and sometimes it is where the dirt goes into the dirt cabinet (or whatever it is called).

I have spent so much time cleaning out my vacuum to make it work and then causing a huge mess of dirt on the floor that it causes my cleaning time to take way longer than it should. I have kids and pets so there’s all kinds of small things on the floor, but I expect a vacuum of this caliber to be able to not only handle it but not require me sit down on the floor and conduct surger on my vacuum to fix the issue.

> In order to use the wand I have to unwind all of the plug cable as the cable locks the wand into place on the vacuum – just not convenient. > After using the wand, trying to put it back in place is such a challenge that half the time my family won’t even take the time to put it back in its place – it just doesn’t want to go where it should.

> When using the wand, your hand sits on the stretch tube part and as it picks things up it hits stretchy tube part right where your hand is – half the times I think that there is a hole because it feels like it really is hitting my hand but I realize there is no hole but then the rest of me wonders how long will this stretch section actually last if things are constantly hitting it in the same spot??? We will see, I guess.

> When you are done using the vacuum and want to make it just stand up, you have to put it in place 2-3 times before it will actually stand up on its own. I’m not sure if this is on purpose or if there is something wrong with my vacuum but it just becomes annoying after some time.

I will note, that when the vacuum is not clogged, it works like a freakin champ – I still have yet to come across any other vacuum that can suck up as much dirt out of the ground as the Dyson.

I previously owned 2 shark vacuums before taking the plunge with this Dyson. WHAT A MISTAKE?!!! This thing is very clunky and heavier than the Shark, and I absolutely loathe the pole that is inside the hose that is supposed to extend/ and have attachments added on the end.

Unless you have VERY high ceilings and plan to clean them every other day, this design is absolutely useless. I’d prefer a fully flexible hose throughout rather than this garbage pole in the middle. I can’t help but feel that this is going to tear the hose in less than a year based on my home’s needs/ usage.

No, not because we are rough with it, but due to the poor design! We have 3 kids under 10, and 3 medium to large dogs & that stupid pole has already been clogged twice out of the 3 times we’ve used it! Going from attachment usage (standing) to floor usage is also rough.

You almost have to slam this thing in order to get it to switch over. The “one touch emptying canister”??? HA!!!! Maybe after the very first use, but the two times after that when it is nowhere near full – the bottom is stuck to the canister & I had the button pressed all the way down! There was nothing sticky sucked up so I have no clue why the release wasn’t working.

This also does not easily glide over thresholds and while the suction is strong, I wish there were a way to adjust it because it often gets stuck on the carpeting or couch pillows in which I’m trying to clean! This means I have to wrestle with it to get it to move back and forth – NOT AT ALL WORTH MY MONEY, TIME, NOR EFFORTS! I want my money back, but somehow something delivered less than 1 month ago is no longer returnable!.

I am disappointed with this vacuum. Pros: I love that it doesn’t have a disposable bag. The suction power is great, and may be too strong (wish there was a way to adjust the suction power). The filtration seems great — no sneezing fits after vacuuming! Cons: This is an extremely noisy machine, particularly when using the wand with attachments, especially the stair tool.

Stair tool is less than 5 inches wide, rendering it useless. Using the cleaner head doesn’t fully vacuum dust off of hardwood floors – it seems that I will have to separately purchase the “articulating hard floor” tool to get the job done right.

The wand is extremely awkward to use: the hose retracts too tightly and pulls the vacuum if you try to use it fully extended. The hose crimps and blocks the suction since it doesn’t have any curvature where one’s hand holds it.

(I note that all promo picture show the hose extended fully straight — is it not supposed to be used at an angle?) The cleaner head is rather wide and not ideal for smaller spaces. Cleaner head with beater turned on can easily suck up fringe and edges of thin rugs, and in fact has shredded the edges of a sisal rug.

This is not an ideal vacuum for those with lots of rugs and wood floors who want to try to clean both at the same time without continuously toggling back and forth between using the cleaner head and the wand.

The machine feels flimsy, cheap, and wobbly. The handle always feels like it is about to twist and snap off. My 20 year old Miele is a far better vacuum in terms of design and quality.

I would like to have seen additional views of the product other than the provided front and slightly side-angled view, particularly a clear view from behind the vacuum. Opening the top of the box you will find e instructions sheet tucked under a nicely printed Thank You note from Hoover.

The product is well packaged for protection but is not difficult to remove from the box. The attachments are tucked into side areas with the vacuum in the center. The cardboard pieces separating the packaging sections lifts out easily without stuggle and the vacuum unit is then free to be easily lifted from the box.

Assembly was a breeze. The handle simple slips into place with a push-pin style locking mechanism. There is a place for each attachment on the vacuum body for easy storage and access to the attachments.

My only complaint with my initial visual inspection is that the hose from the vacuum to the dirt canister appears longer than it needs to be and gets in the way a little when winding the cord onto the unit.

After using in my main living area, where we have carpet and a large area rug that the dog and cat hair clings to, the Hoover High Performance Swivel XL Pet Vaccuum did an extremely good job in picking up the pet hair from the rug if I used the Low Carpet setting.

The medium setting was picking it up but was requiem good several passes over the same area. In comparison, our past two vacuum cleaners have been much higher retail priced Dyson brand vacuums and those require several passes on the rug to pick up the hair.

This has been my number one complaint when vacuuming over the past couple of years but this Hoover seems to grab the hair much easier. The pet hair attachment is similar in nature to other pet hair removers we have in our Home, but with the added benefit of being a vacuum attachment.

It’s rubber “blades” helps scrape the pet hair for easy removal. This attachment worked wonderful on our couch, which tends to show pet hair pretty easily. The other attachment has brush like fibers all the way around it and has a swivel design making it perfect to clean dust from ceiling fan blades.

Finally, the long, narrowing tipped crevice tool makes cleaning between the couch cushions and the small area between the bottom of the couch and floor a breeze. I can’t wait to use that attachment when detailing the car! Overall, I would definitely recommend the Hoover High Performance Swivel XL Pet Vaccuum to anyone with pets.

I can not speak to its longevity or how well it’s suction over time, but I am impressed with its out of the box performance with pet hair that I’ve experienced trouble cleaning with my much more expensive (albeit much older) vacuums.

I received this vacuum for review. For about ten years we have had Shark vacuums so that is mostly what I have to compare it to. Here is what I love about it; It has great suction, I feel like it does a great job of pulling pet hair up from the carpet and leaves pleasing vacuum lines, I say better than the Shark we have.

The power cable is longer than the Shark, with the Hoover I can actually reach the extra bit that I need without having to re-plug into another outlet like I have to do with the Shark. The Hoover comes with several attachments that are useful, I love the soft bristle brush that I don’t have to worry about it damaging furniture/blinds and I love that there are two sizes for the long attachment.

We also have loved that the debris container is quite large and easy to take off and empty. I feel like the ergonomics of pushing the brush part down and pulling the handle back, then turning the power on with your foot is just a smooth easy flow.

Now some areas of improvement. The base where the main brush is is fairly tall compared to what we are use to. It doesn’t fit under furniture quite as well as I would like. Also the selector knob to select the height of carpet or bare floors is down on the base just behind the main brush.

First world problems, I know, but I feel like if it were higher up along the handle or somewhere on the back towards the top of the vacuum it would make it so much easier than stopping and having to go to the side of the vacuum and bend over to the lowest part.

My wife says that the swivel is too. stiff? It doesn’t swivel back and forth as easily as the Shark. I notice the difference but don’t necessarily find it to be an issue. Overall we are quite pleased with the Hoover Power Drive Swivel XL Pet.

With two dogs in the house we are no strangers to hair, the Hoover has been living up to its claim to be a pet vacuum.

Okay, this vacuum cleaner is actually FUN to run! It’s lightweight and very flexible. The long wand makes getting corners, cracks and crevices a breeze. Only drawback is the base will tip over if you stretch the hose too far, so keep an eye on it as you use the wand.

Cleaning stairs is easy with the “Lift Away” feature. The NV501 has strong suction and durability. Do your regular maintenance as other reviews have mentioned, and store it properly. It’s super easy to take apart when needed.

I accidentally sucked up a microfiber cloth once, but was able to open the hose at the right spot and pull the cloth right out. We’ve had our NV501 for almost a decade and still no problems. Have purchased this particular model as gifts for friends and family.

Highly recommended.

I bought this off Amazon for $269 roughly a year ago after everyone in a Facebook group suggested I check out the shark vacuums. It works so much better than the cheaper vacuums I’ve always bought from Wal Mart.

This one has lights and the sucking power is strong. You can even adjust the suction power with a dial at the top. I don’t bother using any of the attachments when I use the hose and have no complaints.

It does require filters or filter cleanings and the cup on the front pops off for easy disposal. It could be a better design for the pop off compartment so that’s why I’m giving it 4 stars. I always seem to spill just a little when I’m emptying it into the trash.

This vacuum is still going strong and I do recommend it to anyone asking for a great brand. The biggest pro for me is it works on my hardwood floors and my rugs! There’s even an indicator light that flashes red if something had your roller clogged.

After looking at lots of shark vacuums I decided on this one mainly because the product photographs showed it with the pet hair attachment the hardwood floor attachment and a little sled/caddy you could use to pull around the canister portion.

I figured since it was more expensive than other shark models that looked like this one that was the difference in price. However when I received it it only includes the crevice tool the small brush and a small upholstery tool (see photo) none of the other things.

It’s a great vacuum and works like my last Shark but the last one included more attachments & a bag to keep them in. Now I will have to spend more to get the things I thought I was getting with this one.

Best Buy should remove those photos of the optional items or label it better. Refer to the detailed product description to see the what’s included portion fine print. it still looks to be a great vacuum but I was disappointed that it didn’t include the pet and hardwood stuff.

I was compelled to accept the Dyson Multi Floor 2 vacuum cleaner when the motor on my Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal went out and had to be replaced. Unfortunately, Dyson was out of stock with both a replacement motor and a replacement device and I had very little choice but to accept the Multi Floor 2 as a comparable replacement (price-wise, they are they same, but that’s where the resemblance ends).

The Multi Floor 2 is fine if ALL YOU WANT TO DO IS CLEAN FLOORS. However,I have 6 pets and there is a lot of hair to pick up and this appliance has no real ability to perform such a function. Consequently, I felt compelled to purchase an additional vacuum cleaner to specifically pick up pet hair but, to my disappointment, it doesn’t clean as well as the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal and there are no pet hair attachment (I’ll talk about the attachment in a minute) so I now have 2 vacuum cleaners and I’m still not getting the house as clean as I could get it with the previous cleaner.

In addition to there being no attachments that are useful for pet hair, in order simply use the attachments you have to completely unwind the electrical cord in order to access the hose that you use in conjunction with the attachment and the hose itself requires a fair amount of physical strength to pull it out to a length that is useful.

I am not happy with this device and, had I known its deficiencies, I probably would have just gone and purchased a vacuum cleaner from a different company than be saddled with this piece of crap. I would not recommend this to anybody who wants to keep their home seriously clean.

I had my doubts about Dyson being worth the cost compared to cheaper vacuums, but decided to take the leap anyhow. They do live up to their reputation- the suction on this vacuum is incredible. It was pulling things out of my carpet in great quantities even after it had been vacuumed by my old unit.

You will have no complaints about the ease of cleaning carpets or the ease of emptying the dust bin (which fills up fast). And don’t try to use it on throw rugs or bath mats. The suction will just suck them up and clog the vacuum.

There are a few areas that this vacuum has been a disappointment though. First, if you stop vacuuming for a moment to pick something up, the vacuum falls over 90% of the time even if you ‘lock’ it in the upright position.

You constantly have to lean it against something to keep it from falling over. Secondly, the wand attachment is complicated to use and will DEFINATELY cause the vacuum to fall over. My $150 Kenmore never had this problem.

A $500 Dyson should not either. Lastly, it does not work well on hardwood floors. You can turn the beater bar off and it does have great suction, but the lip of the vacuum is too low. It just pushed the debris on the floor around.

My kid spilled popcorn kernels on the kitchen floor. All this vacuum did was push them around until I gave up and had to use the wand attachment.

Easy to put together! One thing to note, when you power it on to vacuum the carpet, make sure to push the button “Brush Roll” as it does not come out of the box ready to vacuum carpet surfaces. This vacuum has great suction and really cleans.

We moved into a home that had new carpet installed and it really grabbed the loose fibers and sucked up a lot of dirt & dander from the carpet! Very happy with this vacuum! We had to leave our other Shark vacuum with our children to take care of our other home so we had to purchase another one and this did not disappoint! We would definitely purchase this again!.

I have had the Prolux 600- for about one month now and love the vacuum. My son came home from college and commented that my carpets looked so clean! One review I read thought the cord was too short and this could be the farthest from the truth.

I have a large family room and it is not necessary to move teh plug as I used to have to do with my old vacuum. The vacuum handles high pile soft carpet very well and I have no problem pushing the vacuum.

I had a couple issues early on and the customer service team was great to respond in a timely manner. One issue was I found it difficult to remove the hose to use the tools. I found a little bar soap applied to the hose solved the issue.

I also had a squeaky weal and a spray lubricant solved that issue. This vacuum does not do a very good job on hard floors so if that is what you are looking to vacuum this would not be the best choice.

The dirt is just blown out around the vacuum. Overall great vacuum!.

I received my prolux 6000 today and I am very excited about it. I received it very quickly. It was very easy to put together and I am very impressed with the quality of the vacuum. I used it alittle and already can tell I will love cleaning with it.

It moved very easy from different types of floors. I will only be using this to clean at my church so I needed a very good vacuum. This really does feel like it will take on that challenge.

The Prolux 6000 upright vacuum! This is a tough commercial product without a noisy power. Vacuum is great for all my household needs, especially when my fur baby sheds all year round. American quality we can trust.
