20 Best Sealer For Outdoor Furniture (2023 Updated)

I used the Starbright classic Teak sealer on my Mastercraft swim platform. It looks beautiful. It was easy to apply and the color is outstanding. I would recommend this product for this type of application.

The boat is used only in fresh water.

We had one window on a job that was supposed to be stained. One of my guys didn’t realize that because all the other windows on the project were being done with just flat-out-flat on bare wood. So he went ahead and put flat-out-flat on all the windows before i had a chance to stain that one.

When it came time to put the stain on, i went right ahead and was very confused as to why the stain wasn’t absorbing. I took my gloves off and rubbed the wood and realized that it already had a coat or two of flat-out-flat on it.

I am a carpenter with a couple decades of experience with woodworking and i didn’t realize the stuff was there until i touched it. This should give you an idea of how flat it is. I also like that, although General Finishes does not tout its eco-grooviness in any way, Flat-Out-Flat is pretty non-toxic stuff.

A deep dive into the MSDS sent up no red flags for me, which is rare for products that aren’t explicitly made for chemically sensitive people.

This is my first Waterbased (WB) poly experience. THis is finish for a tool chest for under the workbench using a very nice birdseye maple for the drawer fronts. But its winter, cold and damp, and I could not supply adequate ventilation, so I opted for the wife-friendly WB Poly.

I expected a chatoyant “pop” of the highly figured grain. I don’t believe that possible (at least to the extent of using oil based finish) with this product. For this wood, on this project, it did not yield the results an oil based “varnish” finish would have: warm, deep, and popping grain.

Instead, it is crystal clear, no darkening (or wetting) and no dimension to the grain, looks and feels a bit like plastic finish. I can’t fault the finish for that, it is the indian, not the arrow, this time.

APPLICATION: Product is thick and white like milk, with a subtle blue cast. I used a synthetic brush, then, on the third coat, switched to foam brush. Foam worked better, with a light to moderate pressure and fully loaded brush.

Product left minor streaks, that partially flowed out with both brushes. Surface was full of tiny bubbles that disappeared while drying. Product had about a 1 1/2 minute working time after first brush.

I sanded well P320 between coats. Product powdered nicely with sanding. Final finish has some minor streaking, no bubbles and from a foot away looks pretty nice, if you like your figured wood to be coated in clear plastic.

Practice on some plywood to fond the right pressure, and load the brush. Minimize brush strokes. I wouldn’t hesitate to use this product (WB Poly) on painted cabinets, toys or wooden fixtures but will never again use it on a figured wood project.

It did what it was designed for, so I bumped it up a star. Wish I could have waited for warmer weather. and adequate ventilation.

This is the second project I’m using this product on. It does exactly what it says it will do. The first project had several pieces I painted a very pale gray. With this top coat, the appearance was just slightly darker.

They did disclose if using on bright white or very light colors, a yellowish hue will be seen. However, it is barely noticeable. The second project was a dark blue (more royal blue) desk. Im thrilled with how both projects came out! I highly recommend this top coat!.

I purchased this product because I was in the process of building some shop cabinets for my wood shop. Our house has a stone foundation so moisture is always present and has caused serious problems with other materials in the past.

I chose the spar urethane because of its claims to work well in damp/wet environments. Pros: 1. It gets applied like most other finishes. it went on easy with a cheap bristle brush and laid down fairly smooth.

Make sure to mix the container thoroughly as there was a film at the bottom of mine. 2. The product had a slight yellow tint to it. I personally think it really brought out the character of the plywood but others may not be impressed.

you to make your own determination on that Cons: 1. I started using this in my garage and the smell spread through much of the house. I quickly discontinued my application and waited for a nice day to move the items outside.

2. The product seemed to take longer to dry than indicated on the can. I was surprised since the majority of my work was outdoors in the open air during moderate temperatures. Definitely give yourself a few extra hours for dry time from what is recommended by the manufacturer.

3. I seemed to have an issue with the finish getting a clear white haze to it. It was just in a few spots and I assume it was based on surface prep. Other notes: I was wearing a pair of cheap vinyl gloves while coating.

It seems like there was a chemical reaction with the product as they quickly began falling apart. I changed to a pair of nitrile gloves bought here on amazon and didn’t have an issue. Final Thoughts: I have another round of shop cabinet builds on the horizon so as long as it holds up I will definitely use the product again.

So for the most part it is a great product that works well !.

I have been using Helmsman Spar Urethane satin finish on most of my yard decorations such as birdhouses, nail kegs, flower cart, antique laundry tub and the list goes on. A great product, it helps protect from sun, rain and snow damage.

I apply every spring with a paintbrush, it goes on clear and dries with barely any sheen and the best part is no yellowing. I took it a step further and applied it to an antique soda cooler, a full size floor model made from wood and glass.

Why you ask? The cooler had the original paint which was worn, chipped and flaking. I wanted to preserve this antique finish but just looking at the cooler would cause tiny paint chips to fall off and make a mess.

More importantly, it was slowly ruining the look. For this project I purchased the spray can version and am happy to report that it has sealed the paint finish, chips and all preserving the look. I can now use it outside during the summer months as a beverage cooler without any worries.

I’m going to start with the fact that I am a novice furniture flipper! I enjoy finding small pieces like side tables and chairs, wooden, and painting/refreshing/sometimes distressing. I usually layer different colors, and distress for an aged or vintage look.

Sometimes shabby chic! I have been please with my work so far but was nervous about needing a top coat to keep the integrity of the paint and keep it from staining from water/household use. I read a lot about others drying with a yellowed tint so I was nervous to try this on my almost stark white table.

The spray went on very evenly, was easy to apply, dried fast (but not too fast as to leave streaks or anything while overlapping the spray strokes), and dried completely clear! I may have over sprayed, but I did one “thick” coat and so far has stood the test of time with kids, adults, and pets! I would definitely use again and did exactly what I was hoping it would!.

I LOVE this product. Unfortunately, I purchased it at $65/gal last time and the price increased $20/gal. I need a minimum of 10G to spray my Florida fence each year. It just doesn’t hold in the Fl heat and weather.

It’s gorgeous but I think it’s too pricey at this point. I’m going to look for other options next spray ??.

I’ve been using this product almost exclusively for all my exterior wood finishing. I live in Phoenix, Az and the sun and heat here are ridiculously damaging. Thanks to this product and a yearly maintenance schedule the 12 year old sun exposed surface on my client’s wood garage doors, underhangs, rafter tails, beams etc, still look brand new.

This is by far the easiest product to apply and the smooth glass like finish made me stop using traditional varnishes long ago. I always say “find a product that makes you look like a genius and stick with it.

Goes on easily and covers well. I used it for garden railroad trestles because varnish would be difficult if applying several coats or refinishing. Looked great after 2 coats. If it lasts more than a 4-5 seasons and the maintenance is easier than exterior varnishes I’d give it a 5+.

It won’t take the place of marine finishes for wooden kayaks (built 2) and such applications, or paint-like products, but I am hoping it may be superior when you want an acceptable non-fussy true wood finish.

It darkened western red cedar but I did not find this objectionable at all. Grain and other contrasts still showed nicely. Looking forward to using it for other outdoor projects.

i have used this sealer for almost a year, i have paid between $4. 00-$12. 00 per 8oz bottle, and it is a great deal at any price. When allowed to dry for 24 hours, this sealer keeps my painted rocks water proof.

it is easy to paint on, and works as a base coat, it can be mixed in with the paint and fantastic as a top coat.

It works perfectly for sealing my paper beads! I was so happy to find that JoAnns carried it.

My Kingsley Bate teak-trim outdoor chairs had weathered to a gray patina. I wanted to bring them back to the original luster. This product worked beautifully after I did some elbow grease of cleaning the dirt and grime off.

We’ve had Kingsley Bate teak furniture for 10 years now on our screen porch. We have treated it annually with protector, and occasionally with cleaner. The waterproof stuff also works for our dining table.

Expensive but a bottle goes a long way.
