20 Best Screws For Wood Projects (2023 Updated)

The star drive really torques down without stripping. They really do pre-drill themselves into most wood. They don’t bleed. The threading really bites hard into wood and really joins two pieces of wood tightly.

The reason for the 4 stars and not 5 is I have had these things snap when I drilled into hardwood without pre-drilling. I have found that once you start screwing them in to hardwood then don’t stop. If you want to drive it just a little deeper they snap off.

Because these screws grip so well it is hard to get a broken thread out. If you are constructing with softwoods such as redwood then you will never notice this problem. Once you learn to avoid snapping the screws then you will never want anything else.

These are heavy duty easy to drive fully functional exterior Grade screws that also happen to be pretty e when hanging items that work better if the head is exposed. I leave the head up a little instead of countersinking them.

They look like little flowers. I ran out, and discovered my local Ace store was the only place I could find them. Not even all Ace stores have them. So having them available on Tryit is terrific. The color is not true brass or bronze but I’ve used them for both and find the color very complimentary.

We use the longer ones for heavier duty jobs. Exelent calidad.

I had some pressure treated railings on my deck that had poorly affixed balusters. They were attached using very thin nails and came off easily. I used these screws to firmly attach the balusters. It was a little bit of overkill, but I never have to worry about them disconnecting, and creating a dangerous gap in the fence.

So far these have held up great, and have shown no signs of rusting. I am also a huge proponent of the star drive. There is basically zero risk of stripping the head, and these things go in very easily in pressure treated wood.

BE AWARE! I purchased this online and had my teenager pick it up for me. When I got it, I noticed that the package was a small, plastic container with 50 screws in it. I thought I was crazy and had just ordered the wrong thing.

I jumped back online, clicked the product again, and read the description. There it was – the description plainly says that it is a 1-pound box that contains 112 pieces. BUT, then I scrolled down to Item Specifications, and there it says that the package contains only 50 pieces.

In other words, they don’t know what they are selling you. I’ll be heading back to TS today to talk to the manager about the online discrepancy, and to trade out this tiny package of screws for what I was supposed to be getting in the first place.

these are NOT 4 inch screws!! do npot buy!! they took forever and I paid way too much for these. They aren’t worth a crap and they feel plastic and are very tiny. these are more like screws for sunglasses.

All the Kreg screws are great, the self-tapping screw-tips work exactly as designed, without having to drill pilot holes in the second work-piece, and without splitting it. If you want to work on an outdoor project, get the Kreg Blue-Kote screws.

I don’t know how long they’ll last without rusting, but I have a couple of Blue-Kote projects that have made it through six harsh summers and six harsh winters, and they still look new. The zinc-coated screws will start rusting pretty quick outdoors.

Kreg recommends 1-1/4 inch screws for joining two (nominal) one-by boards. The 1-1/2 inch length is a bit large for that. you stand a chance of having the tip extend out of the second work-piece. But I use a lot of this length in building cheap shelving, with 1×10 shelves and 2×10 verticles.

The extra quarter inch gives me a stronger joint.

The days of flat and Philips head screws are gone forever in my household. These star drive screws performed well and I did not have to pre-drill any holes. If you have never tried star drive screws, you are in for a great treat.

Instead of your screwdriver bit bouncing off and out of the Philips head slots, you will find that the stardrive screws are foolproof. They can be removed and reused multiple times, even in the longer lengths, These screws are the best screws ever made.

The heads never strip, they’re reusable and never snap They do cost a bit more than the average screws, but they are worth every penny.

I just completed a project that required these screws to be used in oak 6×6 timbers. We used over 700 and only broke one. I was also impressed by the bits supplied in the box. Of the 6 supplied (two per box) we only used 2.

All around great experience with this product. Make sure you have plenty of drill power to install. I used a Milwaukee 3/4″ right angle drill.

I find the larger diameter head and the cost savings has me switched over from GRK’s RSS series to the Simpson. It also seems to be easier finding larger quantities. Both are great products but the above mentioned items put the Simpson ahead for me.

The railing on my deck was very loose. I used these screws to drive through the 2 by 10 footer into the 25 joints holding up my railing. Then used a drill and torque wrench to straighten the railing.

Screws worked perfectly, railing is now secure. Excellent product, would highly recommend.

I use these Kreg Screws for cabinetry, usually to join 3/4-inch face frame material and occasionally 1/2-inch material (although I find that 1-inch screws work better for 1/2- to 1/2-inch). I’ve never had a Kreg screw not perform.

For general purpose, these outdoor phillips deck screws are superb. I got a box primarily for the 10 year outdoor rating. This gives me the peace of mind that they are manufactured to stand up to the outdoor elements, weather (hot and cold fluctuations) that we are prone to in the Midwest.

The Phillips head is really good on these, holding firm to my tips. Some generic screws fail quickly when putting strong torque, not these. Phillips has always been a brand that I trust and I highly recommend this product, without hesitation.

These work really well! I actually was in the process of building a deck before receiving these. These have worked better than the ones I was using. I went out and bought more! They hold really well and now I won’t have to wonder if my screws will start poking up through the wood.

I used this screw on my outside pool deck. The last screws that i used did not last very long in the cold temperatures. These screw are high quality. They were very easy to handle the job. I don’t think i will have the same problem as before.

These screws are great.

Necessary to get through 3/4″ strapping + 3″ exterior foam and into studs. Wasn’t expecting a flat head & we had to pre-drill ~500 sink holes.

The deck screws worked as indicated and the guide that comes with was very helpful in keeping the screw pattern in alignment. Just remember to keep constant pressure on the screw when driving it or the head of the screw will not always seat flush with the surface of the deck board.

Have used these before, easier to use than ordinary Lag Bolts.

My Power Pro interior wood screws was used for a built in book case. With using 1 inch 1 by 4s, I used a drill bit before usage of these wood screws. Unlike most screws, the torque bit head never rounded during impact, screws sunk just enough to hide from sight.

The screws grabbed the wood tightly to hold the 1×4 to the stud. Really like case they came in for storage. They are very well made for DIY or professional use so I do highly recommend them. Looking forward to using them at work.

It’s nice to have spare screws around for repairs and replacing old slotted screws. I also have the sheet metal screws, bolts with nut and a box of various washers, too. So nice to know you’ve got ’em when you need ’em !!.

Purchased these to mount switches and cable straps/ties to mounting pegs inside an outdoor plastic box. My only complaints are: –There’s only 10 of each (not a huge deal, in my opinion). –The plastic container they come in is a little flimsy, and allowed a couple screws to mix with other screw types.

Not a deal breaker given the price, but a minor annoyance easily fixed with a separate container. The product pictures are exactly like the item in person.

The bin was another reason I bought this package, to use for years to come after the screws are gone, but the packaging was so poor that it offered no protection against UPS’s abusive handling, so it arrived cracked down the side and leaking screws.

Purchased about a month ago to use on a skylight repair. Turns out the fastening head of the screws required a star bit rather than a phillips head bit. I was ok with that as I have a good selection of screw bits and actually prefer the star bit heads because they are less likely to strip out like the phillips heads do.

these are pretty nice in concept and in practice. They have an extra bit of twist at the top of the screw that seems to keep the wood from splitting when you tighten down the last bit. They also have a sort of serration at the tip that keeps you from having to use a pre-drilled hole.

This also seems to keep the wood from splitting when driven with no pre-drilled hole. The package even came with a nice star bit to drive them with. I like star screws the most because they are easier to drive without stripping the heads.

I bought a box of these to secure 22 solid oak sleepers together as a retaining wall for my raised patio. I tried to screw them in without drilling a pilot hole and three out of the first five screws failed with the heads shearing completely off.

Luckily the end of the broken screw didn’t protrude out of the sleeper or I’m not sure what I would have done. I just hope i don’t ever have to separate the sleepers! I then started drilling pilot holes (including a countersink) which allowed me to successfully screw in all remaining screws.

I did try to unscrew a couple but this just didn’t work. All in all, not a great experience but once in, they do “lok” the sleepers together very tightly giving me confidence that they’ll do what they were designed for.

I do need a few more screws but I think i’ll try the SPAX 200mm ones next! These look like they may give a nicer finish too.

Easy to install with high grip strength and pulls plies tight together. These install without pre-drilling unless reduced edge distance is required. The large threads pulls the plies together tight without risk of stripping or shearing off the head.

the Hex head provides a strong grip so the driver doesn’t slip off. There is a light coating that lubricates the screw for easier installation.

These did an excellent job of securing sleepers together. They screwed in easily to the softwood sleepers I have. The included bit gripped the screws securely and the screws passed easily through the top sleeper and bit well into the bottom sleeper securely pulling the top sleeper down.

The head was countersunk sufficiently into the top sleeper to allow another sleeper to lay flat.

Fantastic fastener! I am writing this review from the perspective of a DIYer who tackles various small projects, and this screw fits the bill for a number of those projects. As they are for me, I think these PowerPro One screws will be the perfect go-to option for DIYers everywhere.

Frankly, I don’t have the space, money, or time to store, buy, and/or find a large number of fasteners that will work with every material I use when I complete a project. It is so much easier to have a small supply of these multi-material fasteners that will work well with almost any material and any job.

And in many cases, I found that these screws are either cheaper, the same price, or only slightly more expensive then the alternatives. Although talking about fasteners might not seem that exciting, there are a few features that these screws possess which I have found worked well when using them.

On non predrilled holes I’ve yet to have a screw hang up or lag. They’ve kept their grip on every project I’ve attempted, and have weathered well. The boxes they come in are great as well. The latch insures that they don’t open and spill screws everywhere when I carry them in a tool belt or box, and they come with a perforated flap that I can hang on my tool pegboard.

Heavy plastic and built to last, I’ll buy a larger count box next time, knowing the packaging won’t deteriorate and leave me struggling to organize my screws. Will definite use again, and recommend. Great product.

I am in love with this screw. No wondering if I’ve got the “right” screw, no pre-drilling and it goes in like a dream, noticeably faster and smoother. They even include the bit needed. Brilliant design, Hillman.
