My dogs love to go in and out when the weather is nice and this is the perfect solution. I don’t have to leave the door open, letting bugs in and I don’t have to keep going to the door to let them in and out all the time.

It also has two tabs to lock it if needed.

And buy aluminum tape over by the dryer vent section of the store – more on this later So I read other reviews and I’m here to confirm, if you buy this door, run to the hardware store and pick up some 3/4” machine screws (you’ll need 6) and matching nuts.

Before installation, drill out the existing screw holes on both pieces of the door frame. It’s plastic, so a hand drill was able to go through it quite easily. Feed the bolts through these new holes, tightening the pieces together through the screen with the nuts.

This gives the pieces a very strong fit, where the in-the-box screws and suggested mallet method are simply bad. I reinstalled the door before tightening the bolts all the way, but your mileage may vary.

Use the aluminum tape to line the top and bottom of the door to keep those two pieces of panel that tend to pucker together. The aluminum doesn’t reduce the pull of the magnets on the flap. Other tapes may also work, but I like the rigidity and staying power of aluminum tape for this fix.

Since installing my door like this, I’ve had no issues with even the most aggressive charges through the flap by my dogs. This door is affordable, but the design is flawed. With a little bit of prep and can-do attitude, you will have a great pet door.

This is a great door, and finally fixed the loose screen issue that was letting flies / mosquitoes in (previously had a net curtain to let pup in and out, which constantly left gaps between the door, letting critters in).

I followed ‘MotherofPotatoes’ advice and used hardware-purchased screws & nuts (Thanks @MOP!). I also used grey mesh type tape to cover the screen area before cutting through the screen (this seems to hold it together well and serves as an extra level of protection against accidental tears when putting screws thru).

I also followed MOP’s advice on first using a drill bit to drill holes through both frames. Doggy was unsure at first, but was in and out on his own by the end of the day. So glad I purchased this door as I’m finally able to get rid of the rinky-dinky mesh curtain that looked super sloppy.

My first try at installing this was a disaster. The screen pulled away after a few weeks. I just re-installed a new door and replaced the screen on my screen door. Here’s what I did differently: 1. If you install a new screen in your screen door, do not trim it until after you’ve installed the dog door.

The process of installing the dog door tends to pull the existing screen out of its groove a little. Trimming out the door screen after installation of the dog door takes care of this. 2. It is almost impossible to see the mark for the hole cut on a dark screen.

You need to look at a particular angle. I put masking tape with an edge along the mark to make cutting easier. The first time I tried to eyeball the cut when the door panel was under the screen and the cut was not quite right.

There’s not much tolerance for a bad cut — either the sides won’t snap together right or the screen will pull out from the sides. 3. I put small notches in the corners of the hole cut so they would fold more easily into the groove.

This should really be in the instructions. 4. Definitely use a little silicone glue in the corners of the frame. I also put a dab in the center of each side. If they start to pull apart again, I’ll drill holes and put small bolts in corners and on each side as recommended by one of the other posters.

5. It takes patience to hammer the two sides of the frame together. One side tends to pop out when working on the other side. Once you get a corner secure, work your way out and hold down on what is already together.

Our cat never goes outside, but he loves being on our screened-in porch all summer long. We put this in a (screen in a) window that looks out on said porch, and now we no longer have to keep the door open for him.

Perfect! It only took one showing for him to start coming and going on his own.

Good quality -The pet door is simple to install. The installation video is also available if needed. The door is quiet and it took about a week for my cat to get used to it. I would recommend this pet door.

Like to have patio door open for fresh air. Of course my spoiled cats clawed a hole for coming in and out as they please. This was the PERFECT solution to my problem. Love it!

I will update the review after spending Winter with this. So far so good. The sealing around the door is good, and so far the cool air retension (Summer time) is good. It maybe hard to push for smaller breed, but it’s definitely possible.

My Lhasa Apso can do it.

After being a happy owner of the Original Pet door for 3 years, the clear polyvinyl flap started to warp from normal wear and tear, allowing more air in/out. I had the option of buying a replacement flap for it.

Instead I decided to get the Ultraflex Draft Stopper door. I did this because I wanted better insulation from the outside than the Original Pet Door provided. This pet door uses a hard plastic divided in 3 sections, versus a single pliable flap of the Original door.

Think of the “dual glass with air barrier” you get with a storm window. That’s kind of what you get with this door. I am happy with the extra protection this door provides. Something that we didn’t expect: It did take an extra week of training our dog to get used to the new door.

It takes a little bit more effort to push than the Original door.

i love that its thick, and will hold up. smaller than i thought it would be since i got the large. my shepard has to duck down to get in and out. it took my little 5 pounder two weeks to learn how to push it to get in and out, because of the thickness, he was scared of it.

but i like that the cold air stays out.

This door is great IF you have a wide enough patio door wall. The panel is easy to install (it was harder to open the box than put the panel in), so no complaints there. It is also easy for dogs to learn and use.

We have two huskies that are about 65 pounds each (one tall and lean and the other shorter wider), and they fit through the flap easily. They understood what to do the first time I held a treat on each side of the flap, so the learning curve was easy.

All that said, I have two issues with this door: 1) When the two panels are placed together, there is a very slight gap between them which will allow drafts to come in (unless it is weather-stripped) and 2) My whole family will have to shrink a bit for the door to be human-friendly.

We are average sized people, however it is a tight squeeze to get out the remaining door space after the panel is installed, unless you have an extra-wide doorwall. To give some perspective, the panel is about 14.

5 inches in width when installed. That leaves 18. 5 inches for people to move in and out of my doorwall (it is 33 inches total). Now, we can shift a bit and go in and out somewhat sideways, but this isn’t really reasonable in the long term.

It will be a pain in the keester to go in and out frequently for grilling or if anything needs to be taken in or out. Overall, the door itself is great for pets, but it is not user-friendly or comfortable for people unless said people have either a very wide doorwall or do not care to go in and out of their doorwall.

This cannot stay up permanently for me because we have too much in and out activity. I will say that it is so easy to put up (without the hardware) that I am debating keeping it so that I can put it in as needed when I’m not using the deck or if I am unable to let the dogs in and out 100 times a day.

We’ll see!.

We got this pet door for our “little girl”. She loves to go outside, sitting in the backyard watching the birds and chasing bugs. We just recently started letting her in the backyard and was looking for a door that was easy to install and that she would use.

After reading multiple reviews we decided to try the Ideal door. We’ve had it for a week and we/she loves it! We have been taping up the flap to get her use to going in & out and today we took off the tape.

She’s still trying to get use to the plastic flap down, but she has came in it several times today. Now to get her use to going out. VERY easy to install and take down at night, if you so wish. The door is made well and feels like it will last years.

I highly recommend this door!.

First thing: this product is a snap. literally. to install. Comes in two pieces which slide together, then get inserted in the door opening while adjusting for height with the spring-loaded top spacer.

A ten minute job at most. XL size is perfect for my dog (she’s 40 pounds), and she took to the door right away. With the insulation tape installed the seal is not perfect, but it’s not really that bad, and it’s certainly far better than having to leave the slider open a foot during the dead of winter for my dog to come and go.

Okay, now here’s the caveat: this thing is wide! 15 1/2 inches in the XL version, which means that my standard-sized slider is left with an 11 inch opening for me to squeeze through. which, currently, I can’t (although if I get rid of those ten pounds I am working diligently to lose, I should just be able to manage it.

) At any rate that width is something to seriously consider before making the purchase, and I really think that the widths of the various sizes should be prominently included in the description. That said, I’m quite happy with this unit—especially at the price—, and if it means that (hopefully temporarily) I will have to divert to the bedroom slider for access to the back deck, it’s well worth the complication!.

I installed this in a heavy thick screen. It was a bear since I could not see through the screen to align all the edges. I used blue tape to mark the location rather than a marker that didn’t show. This didn’t help much since I could not see the edge of the screen moulding underneath the screen.

I could barely see the grooves where to cut out the screen. It’s probably 1/8″ crooked, but still works fluidly. My two dogs are 5″ difference in height so I settled for a height in between them. No training involved.

Both of the shepherd mixes went through easily on their own after I showed them how it opens at the base. Just push. One dog can follow the other and the flip screen is gentle enough not to harshly bop her in the face.

This is a dog who will not open a gapped door by herself. We are wagtastically happy! I believe most people can successfully install this. For reference, I’m a 60 year old female. I would make one edit to the instructions.

The drawing of where to cut the screen, which groove to use as a guide, makes no sense to me. I know I wanted the inner groove, but there seems to be one more groove than shown and I was confused. I must have guessed right.

Great practical product for the price. Not sure how Chewy still has a speedy delivery and no one else does.

Overall a pretty good quality item. It’s certainly one of the more spacious cat doors I’ve seen. The frame is sturdy and the connection to the screen is good. My only issue is that the locking mechanism is a tiny little plastic tab.

It’s not even solid plastic, it’s two toothpick-sized spars. My cat is by no means large or powerful but in only 5 seconds she was able to bend the screen and locking tab until the flap was on the verge of opening.

Since then I’ve gone to Home Depot to buy some sliding window locks and drilled/installed them onto the top and bottom of the frame to assure it remains closed when locked. I’d recommend buying this but at the very least, discard the locking tab that comes with it and just make one out of bended metal.

Anything will do, even aluminum. This may keep the flap closed but is no guarantee that the cat can’t push the screen out of the bottom door.

In looking for window doors for my two cats, I searched long and hard. Most doors are the sash type for windows that open up, while mine opens sideways. So I eventually settled on this because of price point.

First, it is fairly easy to put together. Line up the two halves and push together. And by “push,” you really have to push. Do not use a hammer as that will break it, but be prepared to have sore fingers.

This takes some effort. Then you need a razor blade or box cutter to slice the screen so that the door swings in and out. All in all, the process takes about 15 minutes. When it’s done, you have a pet door in the window that still has the screen.

The problem with this for cats is that cats have claws. So when they’re trying to open the door, their claws get stuck on the screen. A lot. So be prepared to need to get something for the screen to keep them from getting stuck.

All in all, good, but could have been better. Still, as a quick and easy solution, this works.

I had a little trouble getting the pegs to line up. Used a piece of 1 by 2 lumber with a hammer to get the pigs to lock in. I installed it in my sliding screen door. I took the screen frame out of the door.

and laid it flat in the basement with a piece of wood underneath to install the frame. The cat door closes most of the time. My cat still wants me to open the cat door for him before he will walk through.

The main thing is I am still able to keep bugs out. When I open my screen door I had to many bugs get in.

I’ve just installed my 2nd pet door (new house). I was very pleased with the first one and it did a great job for the couple of years we had it. My advice to DIYers when installing, is keep a small magnet with you when Installing the screws.

They are not easy to locate into the outer frame and invariably it will take a few attempts. The magnet will retrieve the screw so you can try again. Aside from this, its a great product.

Incredibly easy to install. Instructions were great and very surprisingly our dog has taken to it straight away going in and out of it all day long. We’ve recently had those strong Melbourne winds and the magnets hold the flap in place so well that it only moves when the dog pushes it open.

Highly recommend.

Works well, the magnetic closure does it’s job and it seems to keep the cold air at bay from our laundry. The cat was using it within a day or two. Installation was fiddly because it was hard to line up all screws except the corners as there are no guiding bosses on the spacer.

The only other thing they could have improved was to make the locked position red (we used texta) so you can see at a glance if it’s locked or not Otherwise, good quality at a decent price. Very happy with it.

First thing I noticed was that it wasn’t square. The top slopes down at an angle. Is was fairly easy to install. Just line it up and put the two sides together and use a hammer to join the sides around the screen then cut around the openings.

It closes by itself and has a magnet to keep it closed and since the magnets don’t actually touch each other it’s really easy to open. The color is gray. My dog uses it to come inside but hasn’t used it to go outside yet.

I’m sure she will. She is a 4 pound Maltese and of course she fits no problem.

After 10 years of constant use by my 3 cats it finally wore out. So impressed that we located the cat door online and had it shipped to our nearest store. We like the way it swings in and out sideways instead of forwards and backwards.

The cats took to it right away and we can keep the screen door closed and not have those bothersome flies and other flying bugs come into the house. Great buy.

I have no complaints about the product my complaint is about the delivery. I am 81 years old and I live in a senior community with an elevator in the building. Had I not gone down to check mail I would not have known that my package was delivered.

I found the pet door box by the mailboxes it probably weighs about 25 pounds maybe more maybe 30 and it is almost 80 inches long by 12 inches wide. I had to lay the box on the floor and slide it into the elevator, and that in itself was a struggle getting it into the elevator.

When I got it off the elevator I had to kick it up the walkway to my condo which is at the end of a very long walkway. If this is the kind of delivery service that Walmart provides I will not buy anything to be shipped from Walmart again.

If I had known that the package wasn’t going to be delivered to my door I would never had purchased it from Walmart.

As to the size, it is great for our 120lb Malamute. The door comes packaged well, delivered in a reasonable time, and is easy to install. The drawback is that the flap is so large that it is easy for the metal bar / magnet on the bottom not to hold the flap closed if there is any breeze at all.

I plan to call the manufacturer to see if they have a solution suggestion.

This is a great door that was packaged nicely and was delivered quickly from the time we ordered it. We live in an apartment and needed a way to allow our indoor/outdoor cat outside while we’re gone throughout the day.

He has learned fairly quickly how to use the door on our patio to get in and out. The door has a slight magnetic pull to keep the wind from blowing it open (nice). Our cat tends to use his paw to open the door slightly first before sticking his head through.

Our cat weighs about 11 pounds and has no issue with fitting through the door. We haven’t noticed any drafts or openings with the weatherstripping that came with the pet door. I like that the door is see-thru.

The cat can look in to see if anyone is home or vise versa he can look outside before leaving. The patio door locks in place nicely on our patio door so it would be very difficult for an intruder to get in.

We bought the small size opening so no bigger animals can get in. The small cat door has a 3 way lock. You can lock it so nothing gets in or out. You can lock it so only animals can get in. Lastly you can lock it so animals can only get out.

The door swings both directions. Highly recommend this patio door to anyone who has indoor/outdoor animals.

I found this door to be fine, and I especially like that the dog opening is set lower than on my previous door, so it’s easier for small or elderly pets to use. Most at this price range are pretty much the same otherwise.

The problem came when I needed to replace the flap. Nightmare! You have to remove the existing screws, and 3 of the 5 had the drive in the head completely misshapen – like whoever installed them ground them into a non-useable shape.

They’re very small and trying to use a tiny screwdriver to remove was impossible. I had to use a needle point pliers to remove them. And do you get a set of screws with the new flap? No you don’t! How much would it have cost PetSafe to include 5 tiny screws with a new flap? So I went to the hardware store to get replacements for the 3 that were mangled, and the rest of the removal went smoothly.

Now when you put the new flap in is when you have your next problem. There are no guidelines and there is about 1/4″ of top space you can use. The flap doesn’t fit in any holes. it’s up to you to decide where in that 1/4″ you want to place the top of the flap.

And then, because the flap is in the middle of the panel as the panel lies flat, there is nothing to support the flap, making getting it straight a guessing game. As it happened, I set the flap slightly too low in the space, and so it buckles when the panel is upright.

All in all, flap replacement for me was exhausting and unsatisfactory, and it was the determining factor to try another brand.

I installed this door right away after unpacking it, it fit great and installed very easily. I then spent an hour showing my not-that-smart, 15-year-old dog how to go through the flap. He did not catch on! I was so disappointed, I had high hopes for him being able to let himself out during the day while I am at work, to help avoid accidents now that he is having issues with incontinence.

I took the door back out, planning to return it. But then, before I shipped it out, I decided to give it one more try. I sewed a temporary “training flap” out of an old pillow case, (weighted with rocks sewn in the hem at the bottom to make it hang nicely, lol), and hung it in the opening.

There were small gaps on the sides so you could see out around the flap, and a breeze would blow the bottom inwards a little bit. I pointed my dog’s nose through the new flap a couple times, and he finally figured things out! After 3 or 4 days I re-installed the factory flap and its been great (it has been only a couple days so far).

The door shipped really fast, was easy to install, the flap so far seals well enough to keep the bugs and weather out, and my dogs are happy. If you have a dog who finds the flap too scary or heavy to push through, try putting in a very light-weight flap that they can easily poke their head through – it worked great for me, and once he got in the habit of using the dog door it wasn’t a big deal at all to put the actual magnetized flap back in.

One comment on the size – my dog is about a 45 pound terrier mix, 21″ tall and 8″ wide using the measurements listed on the website. The Large door opening fits him great, but with his arthritis he is somewhat clumsy making it through the door, the lip at the bottom sometimes catches his back feet and makes him stumble.

My other dog, almost the same size but several years younger, doesn’t have any issues with this. The old dog doesn’t let that stop him though, he probably lets himself in and out a hundred times a day now – No joke.

At first I wasn’t sure if the large size was the right choice & was debating whether to get the medium size. I have 4 Poodles & 1 Maltese. 1 poodle (Bandit) is about 7lbs & Is a small toy. I wasn’t sure if the 4 inch raise from the bottom was too tall for his legs to go over through the door.

The largest poodle was about 13 1/2 inch’s tall & would’ve been too small. If the raise on all the doors were the 1 1/2 inch I think it would’ve been perfect. Although that was a dilema before ordering, Bandit gets out just fine over the 4 inch raise.

I absolutely love this door. The door flap occasionally won’t close right , but it’s an The dogs go out whenever they want, which means less presents left for me. I do have another doggie door which was installed on the lanai & my fur babies have been using that door for a few years.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of getting a door for the glass sliding door sooner. It is worth every penny & I’m so glad I bought this door.

We got the doggie door about a week ago. After 2 days the one cat had it down no problem. Just today our 10 pound dog finally started using it on her own. We got the small door and works for 2 cats and a 10 pound dog.

We’re not thrilled with the lock that comes with it. You have to put it either way high or low on the back of the door. It would be nicer if it integrated with our existing sliding door lock. Also, I added some weatherstripping to all sides of the doggie door window pane to stop noise and drafts from coming through.

Also another piece of weatherstripping that goes out at a 90 degree angle from the door about 3″ to meet the screen door to block the gap that you are left with if you want it cracked open so the animals can use it without running into a screen.

These are all things that could have been thought of but overall are happy with the purchase. But just know you may want to make similar modifications.

It wasn’t till I saw the warning on the box that I was aware the door insert was not compatible with my vinyl door. However, I found it was not difficult to adapt it. I would not have ordered it if the warnings on the box were as stressed on the on-line ad.

At the same time I’m happy I bought it, as it is securely in place, is of high quality and the price made it a bargain.

I hunted down this door after going to four different pet stores. I wanted it specifically because it claims there is “no drilling required” and I wanted to be able to take it in and out. I got it home and unwrapped and then I see the directions that say you’re going to need drill bits, screw drivers, etc.

You absolutely have to drill into this AND your existing door to get it to stay where it needs to. If not, you can’t even put the locking handle on it, which is needed if you want any security whatsoever.

In addition, I thought the directions were confusing. Some parts dont tell you which screws to use ( comes with multiple types and sizes) and other parts I felt like I was just guessing. Also, it never truly lined up with my door, and the rubber weather stripping does not stick.

After a four hour install job including another trip to the store for bits I didnt have, I am frustrated that the description wasn’t more clear. Overall, the door works and all my 6 animals love it, so I guess in the end I’ll keep it.

Just mad I paid extra for a door I thought was a pop in and done.

I would not recommend this if you own your home and looking for something sturdy. I definitely would not recommend it if you live in a place where large predators (black bears for example) may get curious around your doors.

It functions just fine, and easy to put together and install, but like I said it’s not heavy duty or even comparable to the older sliding glass doors. My concern is winter, and keeping cold out. The weather stripping does not fully seal the openening, so i had to go buy some better quality stripping.

If you live in central or southern california or some place where the weather doesn’t get too cold, this will be fine. And if you live in an apartment or rental home where you can not drill into the frame of the home’s door, with a little jury rigging you can make this door work.

As other reviewers have stated, you will need to fully attach/install this to the door frame for any security. I’m currently using it only for summer, so I take it in/out as needed. When it is in, there is no way to lock or secure your door (unless you do a full install).

My pup is a trim 67 lbs and it’s a tight fit for her but she has quickly learned that squeezing through means freedom in the backyard! Might be difficult for a chunky/larger dog. Despite the shortcomings, it is perfect as a temporary solution.

I do not think it would be a good solution for extreme climates even as a permanent install because it is not a tight fit even with included the weather stripping.
