20 Best Running Shoes For Shin Splints And High Arches (2023 Updated)

I am a major shoe nerd. I own a lot of shoes, and I know a lot about shoes. And it has been years since I have encountered a shoe (especially a running shoe) that feels as natural on my body as the Ultrafly 4.

I tried both the 3 and the 4, and while the 3 was perfectly fine, I found the 4 to be the perfect balance of stability and flexibility that doesn’t sacrifice structure. I have worn several brands of hiking and running shoes that offer a wide toebox/narrow heel silhouette, but Topo has perfected it.

The breathable upper of the shoe fits my foot securely with a light but balanced, reassuring presence. The midsole provides cushion while also being responsive when I pick up the pace. I pronate a bit, and I cannot stand how so many brands have moved away from medial posting for their stability shoes.

Most of these new “technologies” end up being ineffective, or even push my foot the wrong way. The Ultrafly’s embedded medial post combined with a heel counter provides effective stability that keeps me from pronating without the midsole feeling like a jigsaw puzzle.

I also appreciate the soft but not elastic laces (a major change from the 3) that stay securely tied without being too constricting. Due to some health issues, I have not been able to do very much running this past year.

The UltraFly 4 is my new partner as I recover and rebuild my strength.

I’ve been a Newton running shoes user for some time now. I had the Motion 10, the Boco at 5, the Chicago, NYC, and Texas Marathon special editions, the Distance 10 and I now got the Distance 11. I absolutely love all styles I used, the special editions are so much fun and they are always so very good, hands down, top performance.

At this time my favorite is the Distance and I got this later Distance 11 style. Newton never disappoints and this shoe has definitely met all of my expectations. From Day 1 they’ve felt as if I always had them – light, comfortable, confident, familiar, a bit springy, playful, it’s just awesome to run in them.

The older shoes I use for walking, it is always so tough to part with any of the older Newtons I had. I actually keep a couple as souvenirs. Oh, and over the years I did use every other running shoe brand.

The perpetual problem with every other brand is that when they modify the style that you liked, they usually change it for the worse. Just when you think that you found the shoe that fits you well and that you like, six months later when you need to buy it again you encounter the updated version which turns out to be not the one you hoped you will get.

I was tired of looking for shoes for hours, I no longer search. Newton is the solution. Strongly recommended. Not to mention that the company provides excellent and super timely service any time you may have issues of any kind.

This is my story. Love to run and usually run distance just for the sheer joy of it. As a younger man, I wore minimalist shoes. When I hit 40 I transitioned to a cushioned zero-drop. Little over a year ago, I took a bad step while running in the hills and hurt my knee (not bad enough to warrant a visit to the Dr.

) but continued to run for 10 more miles (eye roll). Wore a brace and had a rest period and soon after I started running again I had symptoms of IT band syndrome. Pain would set in right around 2 miles every run.

I found Newton shoes again and I thought at the very least it will help get my form back in check. Ordered a pair of Gravity’s on sale and went for a run and no pain. None. Tried out different Newton models but the Gravity’s are the perfect fit for me for comfort, weight, and stride.

Newton’s return/exchange policy is pretty amazing especially for me testing out the other models. I currently own 3 pairs (10, 11, +). Not saying Gravity’s will cure your aching parts. Just saying that this shoe worked out for me and now Newton has a customer for life.

I’ve been running weekly at least 15 miles for 20+ years. I’ve run marathons and other length races. These shoes are a game changer. For the past ten years, I’ve been running in Nike Frees and other Nike styles that give me more of a natural running position.

I credit those shoes and style of limited foot support with eliminating chronic IT band issues. A month ago, I took a chance on the Gravity 10 after trying them on a treadmill in the store, and without any transition, began running in them three times a week.

I doubt I’ll ever go back. The shoes actually add energy to my legs. The shoe has a support just under the ball of the foot that encourage my foot to land/strike at just the right spot for me. Like if I was sprinting barefoot in the grass.

They are lightweight and very breathable. A cold breeze runs through the shoe; my feet stay dry and cool. Good for treadmill and concrete/asphalt. Also ran well on packed dirt/low grass. Haven’t run more than 5 miles at a time on them yet, so I can’t say for sure the IT band will stay quiet.

But they are fun so far!.

I normally wear a 13/14 depending on the shoe, but with Sketchers its almost always consistently a 13 because their products run a little wider I’ve found. However, in this case I am really glad I ordered the 14 because they fit like a size 13 Sketchers would on me.

That was unexpected, but I guess its possible because these are slippers and not normal sneakers or outdoor shoes. I got the camouflage pattern, but it really doesn’t look cammo to me – it’s more of a “woodsy” look.

I like the more durable feel to them, almost like you could wear them outside if you needed to – but I don’t. The lining is nice, but not too overwhelming so it doesn’t feel overly plush to me. The lining is more of a thin protector for your feet so they are comfortable to wear as opposed to keeping you warm.

I probably wouldn’t wear these without socks, but honestly I haven’t tried so I’m not sure how they would feel. These are a little more rugged and durable to me so wearing socks with these feels more appropriate; I think my feet might be cold if I didn’t.

They are also a little heavier than I expected but that’s reasonable considering how durable they feel. Overall, I’m satisfied!.

I first ordered a true size slipper and returned them because they were too tight. I then ordered a larger second pair that fit ok but were a little wide and the soles felt lumpy under foot. I also returned them because I was expecting a super soft and comfortable slipper around the house.

I have other sketcher shoes that I really like but these slippers just didn’t do the trick. I will continue to buy regular Sketchers shoes even though I add usually replace the insoles with a more comfortable memory foam and gel type.

I should mention that I suffer from mild nerve issues which probably account for most of the problems. I think Sketchers makes a fine product that I think most people would find acceptable.

Again I find myself very pleasantly surprised to be able to easily place a shoe order online thru the Skechers app and get exactly what I’m looking for every time. even given despite my feet being different sizes! I have to hand it to you Skechers because I have better results online with you than I ever have endlessly trying on other brands in the stores.

These shoes run very close to size but still fit both of my feet very comfortably without feeling like I usually do in the mall stores where I have to split the difference and end up with one shoe that’s too loose and one shoe that’s too tight.

I like how they look and feel and they’re very well cushioned which helps a great deal since I have plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis in both feet. I know I sound like I work for Skechers but I do not.

Nor does anyone I know but I wholeheartedly recommend Skechers to people with foot problems!.

Yes, really nice shoe! Light on the foot. The neon color gives it it a lively fresh look. The insole fits like a glove to my feet and the upper completes it with breathability. Everything is a paradise until I start running.

I was expecting something different from the PB in the sole but recoil or foot protection where not on par. It just felt minimalist with some protection. The PB definitely delivered on lightweight as I mentioned above but not for the purpose I bought it for which is picking pace without hurting my joints.

I would recommend it for walking or light exercise. I guess that you have to be on the lighter side of the scale to fully benefit from its running capacity.

These are probably my favorite running shoes I’ve ever had. I was deciding between these and a pair of Sub2s, ordered both and compared them head to head. These just felt vastly better engineered. Both are super light and felt about the same, but the Run Fast have much better cushioning, wider toe box, didn’t feel like having the “race shoe” compromises, but maintained the same weight.

The materials feel better, the upper is very light but maintains some structure, there is some lateral support, it feels like a shoe you can put some lateral loads on, cut and sprint. I am a neutral midfoot striking runner and the toe drop didn’t seem too steep.

I usually run 4-6 miles and my fast/slow pace is between a 6:30 and 8:00. When I am going really slow and chill, my heel touches down more readily than in a 4mm drop shoe, but it’s kind of welcome. When I pick up the pace a lot I kind of like my heel to not touch at all, and it just lightly touches down where in a minimal shoe it wouldn’t, so I can see why the run fast pro is a little less.

It feels like a comfortable shoe to go slow or fast in though, I had been going more minimal/flat, but I really like this as a middle ground. The two things I didnt like when I first go the shoes is the heel/ankle area felt too loose, I ended up using the last eyelet to lace it and it snugged up perfect with plenty of support.

The other thing is it felt like it had a very pronounced arch, when I was standing around on it for an hour or so, my arches started to ache. The high arch is in the shape of the insole, you can swap the insole if it is bothersome.

But I went on a run, and when I was using the shoe dynamically the insole and feet felt great so I’m leaving it as is. They have a good amount of cushion, not crazy plush like a soft boost or everrun or hoka, but comfortable cushion, I don’t really like my shoes over cushioned, they start to feel soft/mushy.

These feel like a sweet spot. They do have a very good cushy insole, so I’ll have to see how much that plays into early comfort and how/if they change with miles. I also love the outsole, the small lugs are very grippy on everything you would expect small lugs to grip – pavement, packed dirt, wood etc.

The grip is audible, if you drag your feet they will chirp and noticibly catch, but it’s a good thing to me, you either want grip or you don’t. Overall very pleased, I just hate the white and neon color ways that show dirt like crazy.

Really wish they would come out with a black but the shoe is too good for that to detour me.

As an ex collegiate football player I’ve been looking for a shoe I can do sprints in (400-50 meter) to maintain a sense of speed. I’m not a half marathoner or even a 10k runner. I’m about a 22min 5k guy but mainly enjoy speed work.

These shoes are perfect for my track or field days. When I first got them on they felt a bit long, but it’s just because the material is so thin on the toe box. I also felt a little heel slip so I did a heel lock knot (had to google) and that fixed the problem.

My first run was two 800’s and to be honest, they felt forward-leaning but I wasn’t overly impressed, assuming this was because I wasn’t running on my toes. I then went to a tuft field and did six 100’s and four 50 meter sprints and was BLOWN AWAY.

The outsole provided traction like a cleat and from 75-100% effort, you can really feel the snappiness of the shoe and rebound. For me these are perfect because I wanted a good looking shoe I can travel with (without looking like a crazy person wearing racing flats) and that also has the pure speed to get my sprints and speed work in.

Overall these are a good looking shoe you can wear all the time, but also a shoe you can PR your 100M dash in. They just perform better the faster you go. Thanks, Reebok! Nailed this one.

Gave them a go but only ran in one time as felt like running with planks of wood strapped to my feet and made it harder to do my run as no spring in step so back to ASICS again! May be they would do a better job if worn in more but after the first day was not so happy! maybe I m just set in my ways! They were great price, comfortable but only for walking as without feeling that light spring in my step! Felt heavier than I expected is only downfall of the shoe for me;)Thanks.

Under Armour Velocity is one of the best running shoes I have used so far. It’s very light and comfortable. I tested it in raining weather and did an Ultra marathon. I was so happy with the grip on a wet surface.

I now have two PB’s (marathon and ultra marathon). This is my 2nd pair I have bought this year.

Love the shoe. This is my first try with UA running shoes. You definitely need to order a size up though in this model. There is a little too much width space for my foot (have a very narrow foot) now so half sizes would be ideal.

Have done a few 10kms in them and no blisters or discomfort so far. Overall happy.

I got the US 5 (I wear the Adidas Stan Smiths in the same size) but these were too small. Great shoe though!

I have used the Aetrex cobra hard insoles that slip into flats and casual shoes for years with great success. When my heel spurs and plantar fasciitis returned after many years, I ordered these sport insoles.

I have been able to continue my walks and along with nightly icing the spurs/ fasciitis has subsided thankfully. I’m very grateful for all the wonderful products Aetrex makes that allow me, a very active person with very bad feet to continue doing the things I need and want to.

Aetrex Orthotic are wonderful. Feet had been hurting for over a year. I bought two new pairs of walking shoes but still had pain. When I put the Aetrex in to my shoes the improvement after a week was amazing.

There supports are exactly what my feet need. When you first put your foot down, it will feel like someone put some odd thing into your shoe. Something both odd and hard. They take a little getting used to.

But they do exactly what they are supposed to, give that part of your foot some upward pressure to relieve the stress on that Morton toe joint. If they feel too hard, give them a little time. You’ll soon find them to be very comfortable.

OK, I’ve been wearing my Gel-Kayano 28s for about 2 months, having replaced the shoe’s previous incarnation the Gel-Kayano 27. Good as was the Gel-Kayano 27, (and it was good!) this shoe is one hell of an improvement — particularly if your feet happen to pronate (and boy, do mine pronate!).

For me, the two biggest improvements are the toe box and the rear foot or heel support. One thing that gave rise to complaints with the Kayano 27 was that the toe box didn’t hold its shape, that it collapsed or crinkled.

That was also the case with my own two pairs. Within a few weeks the front of the shoes looked misshapen. Not so with the Kayano 28. After two months of power walking (this 70 year-old does marathons) and daily wear the sturdy toe box has held its shape very nicely.

So kudos to the designers for having sorted out that particular problem. Now for the rear foot support: for me that’s been a game changer. The improvement has been such that I’ve been able to dispense with my ankle supports which I wore for years in order to prevent recurring tendinitis.

That’s been quite liberating and a testimony to the thought that’s been put into the design of the shoe. Is there a negative? Well, yes. Nothing is completely perfect. And, here, my sense is is that compared to the Kayano 27s, the Kayano 28 has a little less of that wear resistant rubber in the area of the outside heel (which typically is where my shoes wear out fairly rapidly due to the severity of my pronation) and this seems to have caused the shoe to wear out a little faster.

Notwithstanding, I still give this shoe 5 stars. I may have to purchase the shoe more frequently, but the benefits so outweigh this negative that it will remain my go-to shoe — both for training and for everyday wear.

Yes, in my opinion the shoe also looks real nice: good enough for daily casual wear. Well done Asics.

First ASICS I’ve had after many years of Saucony, Brooks and recently HOKAs. Reminded me of why I loved my GT’s back in the late 80’s. Have been wearing Arahi mixed with one pair of Gaviota, both were 2E width.

The D width of the Kayano27 is good but obviously not as roomy as the HOKAs at 2E. Heel collar felt strange at first but OK now. Higher weight vs. Arahi is negligible and flexibility and energy return of Kayano is noticeably better.

I like that there’s a bit more rubber on the Kayano vs. the HOKA’s. Haven’t run on wet pavement yet but expect these to perform better. Overall very pleased and, at the outlet price these were unbeatable!.

I’ve used Asics since the 1980s and regarded them as the best running shoes out there having tried all the major competitors. I have wide feet and always used the 4E size. I noticed when ordering that 2E and 4E were not listed, only “wide” and that the wide option only seems to be available in the most expensive shoes (£120 plus).

Nonetheless I bought these knowing that if they didn’t fit I could return them free of charge using the excellent return service. Sure enough they were way too narrow and I have had to return them and buy a different brand that does offer full 4E but doesn’t offer the cushioning and support I loved with Asics.

I left my number for a call back but no-one called me. Disappointing for me but I’m sure other people will have a different experience.

I’ve been a long time runner and competitor. I bought these a week ago after using Kayano shoes for years and other brands. I have been on a few runs as a regular runner to assess them and it’s disappointing that they don’t seem as good as they used to be.

They appear as a harsh and uncomfortable shoe. Pro’s: They feel light. My size 11 shoe weights in at 320g ea. The elastic in the Upper construction is excellent that it hugs your foot like a sock and it seems quite breathable.

I like to run my shoes quite snug, so they seem true to size, if slightly narrow in the toe box. Colours a pretty neat. Cons: They’re very rigid in the sole. They’ll become more pliable with use, but currently they create quite a bit of pressure on Toe off.

The Upper and the tongue is very thin. It saves on weight but you feel the laces of you like to cinch your shoes up tight. Cushioning throughout the sole, whilst thick, is not as comfortable as they used to be in years gone by.

Much less Gel in the Heel and midfoot areas, instead relying on high density foams which seem harder and less forgiving. It cuts down weight in sacrifice of impact absorption and you feel it if running on the road if you have poor technique.

Heel cut is just a bit too low to grab the back of the foot securely. This seems to be an Asics thing now, as my last two pairs of Kayanos do the same thing and the Heel foam blows out from rubbing on the heel rather than locking the shoe in place.

For the price of a flagship shoe, they just don’t tick enough boxes in the comfort department anymore to be value for money.

As the title states, this is the best and most significant update to the Nimbus line up. It is probably also the best year to year update I’ve seen across many brands. The drop in weight from the Nimbus 23 is significant (35g I believe) and definitely felt as the shoe feels far more balanced, promoting heel strikes to land on their midfoot.

Two standout updates are the inclusion of the new FFBlast+ midsole which adds so much comfort to the ride, and the updated upper where the tongue is now a thin but padded and stretchy tongue. Its a small aspect of the shoe but it looks sleek, and performs its duty far better than the padded and chunky tongues which were more prone to sliding left to right in the older models.

The Nimbus 24 is overall very versatile in that neutral runners like myself can wear them, but they also provide support for pronators and people who need correction in their step. Its especially useful for neutral runners recovering from injuries.

With the reduced weight and sleeker profile, the shoe is also more capable of quicker and longer runs, and absolutely a great experience for everyday running. A worthy addition to my rotation.

I’m 170lb, 10 to 11 min/mile runner going through marathon training. For my long runs over 18 miles, I’ve tried Nike Invincible Run and Skechers GoRun Maxroad 5, both of which featured widely publicized super foam midsoles, but just didn’t work out due to issues such as blisters, fit, or ride quality.

Nimbus 24 so far proven to have just as good in terms of cushioning, but with superior upper and ride. I’m free of the same problems with those previous shoes. Nimbus 24 has bouncy Blast Plus midsoles, has the right amount of flexibility in the forefoot, while being very consistent in cushioning and ride.

The semi-exposed Trussitc bar provided just the right amount of stability through my gait cycles. The well shaped and padded heel counters provides great comfort. I’m not sold on the stretchy tongue, as I found myself needing to pull it form time to time to maintain the same comfort.

But still, the upper is supremely comfortable, and all of those quality have convinced me to donate the Nike and the Skechers. I highly recommend Nimbus 24. I don’t really have wide feet but have read other reviews about narrower fit, and Wide turned out to be the right choice.

I rarely rave about a shoe, which is not part of the Meta series. It is not easy for me to find a comfortable shoe, since I have a specific way of running – I am a very heavy case of forefoot striker.

Therefore, I need a lot of cushioning in a running shoe that would shield the front part of my sole from the road impact. Gel-Numbus 24 Lite-Show is one of the very few models that fit this requirement.

Their fit is perfect for me. They are heavier than racing models and don’t have the carbon plate, that’s why I use them for my daily trainings and I race with MetaSpeed. And the color is the best I could wish for ( I have them in Ice Mint).

Highly recomended for eveyday road trainings of any distance and intensity.

I have been wearing Asics for many years now. I began to wear them when I developed plantar fascitis. I healed within a few months and I only wear Asics for walking or being on my feet for extended periods of time.

These are very comfortable, have a good arch support and are very well cushioned. I ordered these just before my Disney World vacation so I wore them for the first time there. I walked in these and another new pair of Asics Nimbus 22 for a week.

We logged over 50 miles in that time and my feet did not hurt at all. So happy with these. I wear a wide width and these are one of the few shoes that fit me well. Highly recommend.
