20 Best Primer For New Drywall In Bathroom (2023 Updated)

I bought this primer for covering the blue wall in my daughters room. It actually works. Although I had to apply a few layers to seal off the blue background. Then I used the white paint. It’s a good primer at a reasonable price.

Planned on painting the living room and dining room of an older home where the walls needed many repairs. They did not have Kilz original at Home Depot so I bought this instead. All I wanted was a thin coat of oil primer as insurance for my eggshell acrylic finish.

Used a foam roller as i have used with Kilz Original in the past and expecting the same result. Not even close! This stuff does not level. Now I have textured walls that will need to be sanded smooth once again.

Total waste of time! Should have known when it said it could be cleaned with acetone. Definitely not the same product as kilz original.

I always purchase KILZ brand when it comes to primer. It just plain works, covering all kinds of grossness on walls. I’ve even used it on furniture. I really love that it comes in a low-odor formula, as the smell of the REAL OG primer was SO strong.

My best success with this formula was an old press-board-type cabinet that had been painted with a latex (I think) paint, lived in a smoker’s house and eve was pee’d upon by a dog (at least I’m pretty sure of that).

I stripped and sanded as much of the old paint and finish as I could, then applied two coats of the KILZ. After it dried, I sanded and painted with a pure white latex paint. It came out so beautifully.

It looks like the original, new finish. I am a big fan of KILZ.

Summary: Great for a uniform appearance on new drywall and patches. I’ve done enough work to say that if you want a uniform appearance on a wall or ceiling you need this product. The benefits listed are true and the difference in result is noticeable.

Save yourself time, energy and money by using this product on uncoated walls and patches to existing surfaces before you paint them with the room’s color. Why it matters: If your walls have joint compound or raw plaster, those materials are very absorbent.

If you don’t seal the surface, paint will absorb at different rates and you will notice a difference in tone and texture at every screw head and taped seam. Not only does it seal the very porous joint compound/plaster it also adds a little texture to make the surface appear smoother.

This is an inexpensive product that will properly prepare a wall so that your more expensive paint can reach its color in fewer coats. Can I do the same thing with an extra coat of paint? Not really, the texture will likely still transfer through the paint and you will notice a difference especially when you are at an angle to the surface.

Why not with glossy paint? Glossy highlights every flaw, that is why it is mostly reserved for trim. You would use a different primer for trim because this one is a little thicker (chalky?) and better suited for making large surfaces appear uniform.

Walls look good with low sheen (satin, eggshell) and ceilings look good with flat. How do I save money and time? This product is inexpensive as compared with paint. It seals the surface and you can get away with 1-2 coats of light-colored paint or 2-3 coats of a very deep, rich paint.

Without sealing the surface, you would need additional coats of expensive paint and the results would not be as good. How about a cheaper brand? Don’t do it, I did one time and the results were horrible.

I ended up tossing the remainder of a 5-gallon pail because it was that bad. Kilz is a brand that has been around for a while, they use a lot of solid stuff to make a good coating product. Anything less than a $3 difference is probably an inferior product.

Again, If you want good results, this step will save you time energy and money.

I’m really impressed with this product. You’ll end up needing more than you think but it leaves a wonderful base for your final color. I work in new construction and the majority of the time they don’t use a primer on newly finished drywall which often leads to a subpar look and poor paint adhesion.

You’ll end up masking things off and pulling paint when you peel it off. In other words, don’t skip on this stuff. It’s a thin product and you’ll think you’re not getting great coverage but when this stuff dries you’ll be blown away at how good it looks.

Seriously, just buy it!.

We have painted our entire house and we also take up other projects and have used this brand a lot in the past. Putting up new drywall in the basement we did one coat of this before painting and the wall came out perfect! All it needed was this primer and one coat of paint.

New drywall often soaks in the paint and even if your paint has a built-in primer it just doesn’t look finished until multiple coats. The texture looks a lot better with this primer too. Another win from KILZ.

I have a professional air quality monitor because I am very sensitive to all kinds of things. I went to a hotel while my spouse painted a floor in our house. The VOCs and formaldehyde were in the danger zone at the hotel, where I had to spend most of the time venting the room with the window open just to get the air in the marginal range.

When I got home after the paint dried, the air quality in the room was fresh! I will never buy toxic paint again.

It goes on thick and has beautiful coverage. One coat and all the ugly kermit the frog green is gone (what was the previous owner thinking, who paints their living room kermit the frog green?) LOVE this primer.

I paint furniture and this is my go to bonding primer for slick surfaces or when the weather is really humid (like it has been for months). It self levels well, coverage is decent and cleanup is easy (soap and water).

You need to know your primers though, if worried about tannins bleeding through, this primer IS NOT a blocking primer. In these situations where I have a slick surface and a bleeder, I do first coat of primer with Stix and a second coat with a blocking primer.

My go to is Zinsser BIN shellac based.

Kilz Kitchen & Bath Interior Primer has been a total lifesaver in our home. Upon purchasing a home you never know right away if smoking occurred anywhere. We found out the hard way after many uses of the showers.

We ended up with smoke stains dripping down the wall. In a hurry to stop it in it’s tracks we purchased this product. We did one good coat of primer in the bathrooms and followed up with our paint color and 6+ months later have still had 0 returns of the stains.

This brand is dependable and affordable, I would suggest it to everyone!.

I go to the paint isle and I see several different primers these days. However, I choose to use kilz primer for my base coat when painting my bathroom because I know I can trust the product to do what it says.

It WILL inhibit mold growth in my bathroom in the basement after I use their product and that is peace of mind. It to mention it covered up the horrible brown color that was on the wall before!.

It is thick and so, does not drip much. It is not thick enough to fill cracks that are much wider than a hair with one coat. After 3 coats some small cracks are still small cracks. It does not cover color well.

The color of what ever is below shows through even with 2 coats. That usually does not matter as it is not meant to match and therefore the matching paint would need to go over the top of the Peel Stop.

As a professional Handyman/renovator, I am always looking for ways to speed up drywall repairs and this product does that. I bought this to use on a water damaged ceiling that had paint peeling off and cracked plaster.

It worked great to seal the edges of the paint as well as the plaster that had cracked due to water penetration. After it dried, I used Dap Dry Dex to fill in any imperfections and have a smooth surface after some light sanding.

It’s so good and quick that I have started to use this on areas where the drywall has cracked at the taped seams. I lay this on thick, so it gets into the crack and after it dries, lightly skim Dry Dex, sand and paint.

Looks flawless when finished. And no need for drywall tape or drywall compound.

This stuff really does work as it says. We had some thin plywood that had water damage that caused the laminate to separate. A few small cracks developed. We glued the laminate back down and filled the cracks with this primer and it worked like a charm.

I picked this product up because I couldn’t get a dewaxed shellac sealer. I paint furniture using acrylic paint and found that no sealer/primer caused the paint to absorb unevenly and splotch in places.

i was also painting knotty pine boards and found tannin bleed through the light colores paint I used. The alkyd oil nicely seals the pine from bleed and I like the silken finish of this oil paint once sanded.

I use a 320 grit garnet paper and with the spray version of this paint, the sound goes from scratchy to velvety in a few short strokes. The acrylic paint l use lays evenly on this primer. I only sand irregularities on the first coat or two, but once I sand the third coat, the acrylic finish is smoother than when I don’t use it.

I plan to use it as a base coat under most of my. projects going forward.

I needed to cover nicotine smell and hazards infused by previous tenants’ smoking. It sure seems to cover the hazards, as well as hides concentrated wall colors nicely. But the smell is overpowering!! It is advisable to prime a dwelling while empty.

The smell is similar to the old oil-based paints (lacquer?). Paint thinner should be by your side at all times, as well, to wipe any drops quickly, to wash any smudge off your body, and keep your brushes from drying up.

The primer dries up to a nice off-white matte finish. On colored surfaces, a bit of color is showing through after one layer of primer. It definitely needs a latex paint over. Nicely prepares the surface, though!.

The product was promised within 2 days. Delivery took 5 days which stalled my project by 7 days (had to wait for the next weekend to work on my project). IMPORTANT! The description of the product does not say “DOES NOT WORK ON DECKS”! On the can of primer paint it says the equivalent of does not work on decks or any other horizontal boards that are subject to a lot of rain or high humidity.

I would not have bought this primer paint if I had known that this primer does not work on deck boards. I did not return the product and I did use it on my deck boards just as an experiment (since I had already treated all my deck boards with a copper naphthenate wood preservative).

My husband’s oncologist came into the hospital room early one morning. He was asking for me. My husband said I hadn’t arrived yet. Dr said he’d come back. My husband told me about this & we thought it very strange.

A few hours go by & the Dr returns. This time he did check on my husband but really wanted to talk with me! You see the Dr had purchased an older stately Dallas home that had cats that didn’t use a litter box.

They just aimed for the wall!! Yikes!. The Dr knew my dad & I had been in the remodeling business. He wanted my advice so what to do. I told him to use KILZ. He said he didn’t want to kill the cats!! So, I clarified the product wasn’t for cats! The Dr was a real beginner in home repairs.

Told him, if after a couple of coats with plenty of drying time, it should kill the odor. If it didn’t, he’d need to cut out the sheet rock & start over! And if he did that, he’d still want to paint on KILZ, just in case.

Guess it worked because they moved into the house. If the odo r had remained, his wife refused to move in!! They whole family moved into the house! I was glad I could help the man who was treating my husband.

What a great product. I am building and installing new, so started in a Walk In Closet to test my had at drywall. The wife and I hung the sheetrock, embedded the tape and a couple coats over the top.

Sanded out, but felt this work best left for the M-F pro’s. I had it close, however not perfect. One coat of the Kilz PVA knocked it out of the park. Incredible how good of coverage, even where I ignorantly sanded over the brand new sheetrock.

Covered beautifully. Today, going over the top with a suggested Dead Flat White, looks wonderful!.

I bought the Drywall Primer. I have never used a primer before and the results were AMAZING! I bought it because I was using it in my closet and I wanted to see the true color of the paint that I was using in my closet.

NO REGRETS! I will buy this product again. KILZ KILLED IT!.

We’re new to diy projects and thought painting was going to be easier. It would’ve been if we had this bonding primer from yhe get go. Our cabinets are wood so we figure we use the same oil primer for everything but that was a huge mistake.

The rv interior is made out of 4 different types of material. There’s wood cabinets, laminate wrapped 2 × 4 skeletons for the cabinets and other areas, and 2 types of luan panels. The oil primer did ok on the cabinets but was a horrible mess on the rest of the rv.

We wish we knew about it before we started. It even worked on the wood cabinets! It’s a bit pricey compared to other primers but definitely worth it.

I used this product twice. About 5 years ago, there was some peeling and Behr replaced the paint. About a year ago, the patios and walkways were prepped and painted a second time. There are serious cracks, peels, and flaking.

Repairs do not hold up. Some areas have been patched six times.

This paint primer did its job, my husband started to remodel the deck and placed a new seating area made of PVC. The paint goes in well covers great and Doesn’t leave any smelling order. The primer dried in a good time matter and makes it easy to clean up the paint when comes across any Mila and splatters.

A friend of mine told me about this stuff a few years ago. Between our home and our lake camp we always seem to have painting projects, and for just about every project we use Fresh Start Primer. Whether it’s new wood or something previously painted I’ve found that a coat of Fresh Start makes a great base for my finish coat of paint or solid stain.

And most of the time a single finish coat seems to be all I need. So it saves some money on stain and paint. Seems to stick to just about anything, covers old oil paint, and seems to help the new paint last longer.

We just finished doing all the decks at our camp (solid stain) and they look terrific. It’s a little pricey, but does the job!.
