20 Best Pre Emergent For Bermuda In Texas (2023 Updated)

So far I’ve seen great results using Scotts WeedEx as a pre-emergent on my Bermudagrass lawn here in Central Texas. I put this down on my lawn right before the first of March, just as temperatures were starting to rise.

I was already seeing weeds (broadleaf and grassy) starting to pop up so I was worried I was a little late to the game. I went ahead and yanked all the big weeds, and spot-treated the difficult ones with Image.

After putting the WeedEx down, I had a few more weeds pop up that had already germinated, but after treating those and looking at my lawn now in Mid-April (a month and a half later), my Bermudagrass is pretty much weed-free as it starts its green-up.

I’m very pleased that it seems to have prevented both broadleaf and grassy weeds, including both Crabgrass and POA. I live in a new construction neighborhood that is also near a big open field, so there are weeds literally growing all around, leaving the yard pretty susceptible to new weeds blowing in.

But so far Scotts WeedEx has held up strong! A few things to note about Scotts WeedEx: — This contains Halts, which contains Pendimethalin as the main ingrediant. This is actually a 2-in-1 weed control (prevents broadleaf and grassy weeds) – big plus in my book! — This is a pre-emergent, which as it says on the bag is a weed PREVENTER.

This will prevent weeds from germinating and growing in your yard, but it will not kill existing weeds, so do not buy this thinking that it will. You need something like Image, RoundUp, or BioAdvanced to treat existing weeds in your yard.

— Make sure to follow the instructions on the bag. It gives you recommendations on application timing based on your location, spreader settings, and application directions. You do not have to water this in right away, but you are supposed to within 2-3 days with 1/4-1/2 inch of water.

I watered my lawn about 24 hours after I put it down. I’m very happy with the results so far. It states that it prevents weeds “all season long” however, it has only been a month and a half so I can’t attest to that.

If it continues working well I’ll probably stick to what works and put this down again in the fall to protect against winter weeds.

This spring has been fantastic for my turf! We’ve had regular rain; so much so. I have been spoiled by not even having to water the grass seed. Having used the Mossex on an area that Is now a work in progress growing a thicket of newly seeded green blades, I’ve identified several other areas on my lawn that are more weeds than grass.

I don’t know the names of this stuff other than dandelions and I see no future for me in botany; but since the Mossex was so easy and effective, I decided to dial down my Scott’s spreader to 2. 5 and march over to the Weedex ‘test areas’ and pull the trigger.

That small bag goes a long way when you are selective for the areas of application and only put it where it will make a visible difference and by morning, it did make itself known to be effective. It rained that night and by mid day next day I saw wilted leaves.

I am mowing as soon as it is dry enough then I plan to overseed and revel in my success.

After using several off brand crabgrass preventers and having great results, I thought Scotts brand would perform at least as well as the off brands, if not better. I was so wrong! This product did nothing to discourage the growth of crabgrass whatsoever.

I’m very disappointed. I’ll be stuck pulling a ton of crabgrass from my lawn this season. Next spring I will be going back to the off brand!.

Last year in Spring 2019 was the first time I ever applied pre emergent on my lawn as I always hand weeded my yard because that was my thinking time, plus its great exercise. I hand weeded for about 5 years but when the neighbors stopped treating their yards, the weeds in mine became too many to keep up with, so I researched pre emergents and landed on this product.

I have 5,000 sq ft of lawn in front that I am most concerned about as the back yard I allow weeds for a more natural feel. I applied one bag and was delighted at the results! I had some 8 different weeds that was SO taking over my bermuda lawn but after that one application of Barricade, they were knocked out and I no longer had to spend all those hours pulling weeds as I had before.

Of course my lawn isnt 100% weed free even after the pre emergent but thats my fault as I didnt apply it evenly. You can tell this by the pattern the weeds were growing in haha Lesson learned there. My second app was applied this fall, and Im am SO looking forward to NO poa annua for the first time in years! The price was more than right for this product and have to hand it to Solutions Store with how quickly they ship the product out.

Im completely satisfied with this product. Its what I began with in the world of pre emergents and I see no reason to change. unless the product’s effectiveness changes for some reason (like the makers begin to weaken it somehow) Otherwise, Im sticking with whats been working 🙂 I just received two more bags of Barricade to get me through next growing season.

Ive learned that when you find a product this good, you had better buy it before you need it or you may find one day a shortage of the product. Milorganite anyone? Yeah, that happened to me with that product.

So I bought my pre emergent early in case it wasn’t available when I actually need it.

Preen is great, it works fairly well, preventing weeds from sprouting-up. When using it, one must be sure to spread it all evenly; don’t be afraid to use lots of it. It’s always a great idea to spread the Preen down 1 or 2 days before a rainy-day, water activates the Preen…either by natural-rain, or by a water-hose.

I always rely on the rain, and it works-out for me. The Preen works for 3 months, preventing most all weeds, it does a great job. I highly recommend using this style of Preen. 1 of these full-unopened containers weighs 18 pounds.

Please see the 6 attached photos I provided for this review…I bought 2 of these containers. I highly recommend this product. Lastly, these containers afterwards can be used as storage buckets or for whatever…they are made of high-quality and recyclable plastics.

The Preen is shipped via Walmart-boxes with plenty of protective-packaging surrounding it. I was highly impressed with the shipping-and-handling of these 2 products, I bought 2.

This works pretty well, and isn’t scary to put on food crops. It’s a natural product made of corn and while it doesn’t prevent Weeds perfectly, it definitely makes an important difference and reduces the number and size of weeds, and seriously reduces the maintenance workload in my veggie garden.

I like to put it around established onions, beets, carrots, and beans – the things that are so hard to weed and hoe around.

I previously bought Preen labeled “organic” and now find it is labeled “natural. ” I went online and found Preen is very toxic to birds, animals, and humans if we get it on our hands. Be careful spreading this product around unless you have no regard for the environment.

It is not that it doesn’t work, but the labeling is deceiving. BE AWARE.

I have a small landscape design and installation business. I preen my clients 3 times, minimum. I am annoyed that you raised your product prices while using deceptive advertising on the size of container.

Prices went up 5. 00 per container yet each container weighs 1. 5 lbs less. Looks the same, thus being deceptive. I send out my yearly contracts in January with 3 rounds of preen. Each client now cost me more to preen since the average loss is 9 to 9.

5 lbs. Then 2 out of 6 containers had 2 scoops, thus SHORTING me more preen. 10 lbs minimum.

This product I have used for years! Excellent results to control my enemy, Mr. Weed! Keeps the tomatoes clear and beautiful. and productive. Also excellent in my rose beds. Leave it, forget it. and enjoy your time not weeding!.

I have been using Preen Garden Weed Preventer for well over 20 years now and love, love, love it. I have a 1/2 acre lot with one large bed in the back of the lot that takes 10 yards of mulch then the beds around the house take 9 yards of mulch.

We do not heavily mulch but alternate between the back bed and around the house when we annually mulch so the large back bed gets mulched every other year as do the beds around the house. I always Preen the beds regardless of whether or not it is their year for mulching.

Preen keeps the weeds down wonderfully during the entire summer and tends to work best when applied under the new mulch. For the non-mulched beds, it helps cut the number of nasty unwanted weeds down to next to nothing.

I could not survive my lot without it! I only wish I could find it locally in a larger than 16 lb drum. I’d gladly purchase a 32 lb bag of it (maybe 2 bags) but can’t find it in Dayton, Ohio. Thank you for a great product.

This is a bit different of a process than I’m used to with my lawn care, the application timing is a lot later than previous treatments. I like to get a good start on lawn care so using this so much later made me a bit uneasy, applying it while the weeds are growing as directed doesn’t leave much wiggle room for adjustments if anything goes wrong- not impossible but not ideal or easy when your in ths thick of it.

I am definitely starting to notice how well the lawn likes the food, the weeds are less as well. I like the ease of application, once you get timing and conditions from mother nature its a breeze. The 3 in one benefits are nice and while it has improved my lawn, it doesn’t give me the full effects Id prefer given the price and amount product needed.

On top of time and energy still needed to put into seedig and the additional applications it isnt the best product for my needs. I received a free sample to review and since the area the bag covered did have results it’s not a dud- but not enough for me to buy more to adequately cover my entire lawn for the season.

Preen always gives my lawn the look I want — green and weed-free. I’m giving Preen One an early four stars, based on past Preen results. We’re still in the colder months in PA; so, I haven’t been able to apply One yet, as it’s a post-emergent (and not a pre-emergent, like most lawn-care products), which is pretty exciting given, despite best efforts, you’re bound to see a weed or two on your lawn (especially pesky dandelions, from seeds that blow in from your neighbors’ lawns), even with treatments.

I reseeded my lawn by the book last fall (Oct 17) using a slit seeder and Titan Tall fescue seed. By March/April my grass was amazing, the best in the neighborhood. Thick green and lush! I applied Preen One in March ( I am in Charlotte NC) to take advantage of its pre-emergent as well as existing weed control.

The few weeds that I had were gone within a couple of weeks and the grass looked great. I had to mow it twice a week. Then 8 wks later I applied Preen one again, as recommended, and as directed. Within two weeks large patches of my grass were turning brown.

Now it looks terrible. We have had plenty of rain, and I cannot fathom any other reason for the dead grass. I am very disappointed after spending so much time and money this year to finally have a great lawn.

Fast delivery and a solid product. Can’t vouch for it quite yet, as our soil temps have not reached 70F. But we are sure it will be a great success. We will reapply in February.

Works really well! Sprayed once and not 10 minutes later came a heavy downpour. Thought all was wasted but the weeds started drying up the next day! Will definitely recommend and purchase again!

It’s very small. I needed this to kill the stickers in my grass but this amount covers a very small area and this insufficient in doing what I need done thank you. Also very toxic

My homesite lot borders on a community park. I take great care of my lawn. However the park grass is mowned every 7 days whether it needs it of not. It is sprayed 4 times a year and watered on a schedule to control cost at night.

The 10 feet of my grass that borders the park has been changing for the worst for several years since it is so close to the terrible grass in the park. I bought Scotts Weed Ex and used it in that area to try and revive my grass.

After 4 weeks that area of my grass is in fantastic shape like the rest of my lawn is. I had tried sparying weed killer and othet remedies to not avail This Weed Ex worked better than all the other produces I had tried.

I will continue to use it whenever I see an invasion of weeds from the park. Great produce and easy to apply.

Excellent long lasting product. Great company to buy from. I used it heavy last year but no weed problem this year so far. I am going to start sprinkling it again this week. It does not work well at all on grasses.

But it did beautiful around all of my perennials. Hospice, roses, hydrangea, lillies, daylily, Iris Etc. Highly recommended.

Spring is here, and the weeds are starting to pop up! My flower beds are huge, usually taking 40 bags of mulch each spring, and trying to control the weeds can be exhausting. This year, since I was given this Preen Weed Preventer to review, I took this opportunity to use it while putting on a new layer of mulch.

Following the directions I got rid of the weeds that had already popped up, and I used the application lid to spread Preen on top of the mulch and over a brick walkway that always gets so many weeds between the bricks.

Even though I applied it very liberally it only took 1/2 the bottle to do all of my flowerbeds and the walkway, plus under the deck. Since the product should last 6 months that gives me another application for the fall in the same container.

The granules are quick to spread with the application lid, and I haven’t seen any new weeds poke through the mulch or brick walk yet since applying it a couple weeks ago. I am happy with Preen so far and look forward to a great season of not pulling weeds.

This stuff is amazing for flower beds! By now in my neck of the woods I would normally be pulling weeds like mad from my beds and having a tough time keeping up since this is the beginning of the growing season but I was able to apply Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer in time to stop the emergence of new growth.

I can testify that it is already working as there are no new sprouts coming up, and my beds look so clean under the plantings. This product is so easy to apply – just shake directly on the ground around existing plants.

I especially love that this is a 6-month control formula so I won’t necessarily need to apply again until fall. I am so pleased with this product and will be exploring more of their line of gardening formulas in hopes they will make my gardening life simpler.

A must-have for all display gardens!.

I have been using the regular Preen for many years and always had good results. When I discovered the Preen Extended Control, I was expecting to have good results and saving myself the time to not have to put the product down two times per growing season.

I put the Preen Extended Control down in March and followed application instructions as per usual. We live in MD, zone 7a. We have over 2 acres of property and several large flower gardens. My flower gardens have always been beautiful in the past, but this year the weeds are overwhelming! Attached is a photo of just one small area.

I have an acre of land. This is not practical. How to Apply The maximum number of broadcast applications of Preen Lawn Weed Control per site is 2 per year. Mow lawn to normal height 1 to 2 days before applying Preen Lawn Weed Control.

**”Normal” is a nebulous word. What is normal? What if it is “normal height” now? Why does it need to be cut? Water lawn thoroughly at least 1 day before application to sustain moisture until the next watering.

*** An entire acre? Apply Preen Lawn Weed Control when weeds are young and actively growing, preferably in the morning when dew is on the grass. If grass is not moist at time of application, sprinkle lightly with water to allow the granules to adhere and to remain on the leaf surface of the weeds.

*** Again, sprinkle an entire acre? Do not wash this product from weed leaves for 1 to 2 days after application of Preen Lawn Weed Control. After 1 to 2 days, thoroughly water the lawn. *** So now I’ve watered an acre THREE times.

This product was highly recommended, but it’s really not practical at $18/bag.

There is nothing to like. Complete waste of money. The weeds are growing everywhere like they are having a daily picnic. More with every new day. I will have to return to weedbgon or something else. Nightmare to say the least.

I always start my weed control program every season with a couple of applications of preen weed control. With proper cutting and watering, I can have a nice thick lush lawn by mid summer. It should not be necessary to apply after mid summer because the thick grass should choke out weeds pretty naturally.

Also, I get better green up after midsummer just by using a high nitrogen fertilizer to avoid possible stress from weed control products. Touch up areas is ok if you find a clover patch or leftover dandelions.

Be sure to cut about 2 inches high, don’t bag clippings, and water if possible. Presto, best lawn on the block. Pretty sure it works for me.

You have to trust the process with this, Celsius is a slow killer but it will annihilate Dallisgrass to its roots! My Bermuda lawn was infested with Dallisgrass to the point you couldn’t see any Bermuda at all.

Many YouTubers suggested MSMA but this site suggested Celsius for residential use. I used it with Methylated Seed Oil and made sure i sprayed the weeds until wet. I saw no results until Day 3, which was when the Dallisgrass blade tips started turning red.

Each day afterwards, a larger percentage of the blades turned red – and then turned a darker burgundy-red – and then started yellowing at the roots as well. There were small patches of Dallisgrass that seemed unaffected until Day 7.

But by day 8, every bit of the Dallisgrass took a drastic change for the worse. What was once red was now turning brown, what was once yellow was now turning black – and what was once unaffected in appearance, was now dying fast.

A second application after 10-14 days is suggested but, right now it’s Day 9 and it doesn’t look like the Dallisgrass will make it. I’m gonna put down some DITHIOPYR pre-emergent after it’s all completely dead and start pushing my Bermuda Grass to take back over.

Again, you have to be patient and let it run its course – cuz Celsius is the Usain Bolt of the 4 x 400 meter relay!.

I love this stuff!!! One of the best weed killers for Bermuda lawns I have used. This will kill 90-95% of the weeds in your lawn and has no temperature restrictions and actually works better the hotter it is outside.

Don’t expect a quick kill with this as it usually takes 1-3 weeks to totally kill off the weed and a little goes a LONG way. I bought this as I was running low on my original bottle which was about 8 years old and it still worked just fine.

Works fantastic! After a broadcast application on my fescue lawn, near Kansas City, 4 days later there was some obvious “yellowing” of only weeds, no damage to lawn. After another 4 days, all of my weeds are now as white, showing that the weeds have died and are no longer able to photosynthesize.

I must admit that the white weeds are a bit unsightly, but simultaneously, it is great to see what weeds are controlled by the product (nearly all of them), and what remains uncontrolled (a very few spots).

It’s also incredible to see no damage at all to my existing turf. Great product!.

This product actually works, unlike most of the stuff you get at a chain hardware store. Have used it for 3 years now as a post-emergence weed killer. Even does in crab grass.

I applied the product as a pre-emergent. Lots of the crabgrass came up white and died almost immediately. Have also used it with Tide laundry detergent as a surfactant as a post emergent. It also worked, taking a couple of weeks to kill the crabgrass.

Used a cheap sprayer – caused some regular grass to turn white temporarily, but it survived.

Absolutely zero weeds in my new garden bed with fresh topsoil out of my woods. Also, I was having an awful time with tough weeds choking out my asparagus patch. Thanks to Espoma corn gluten. not anymore!! Love this company.

I have been using another crabgrass control product for years, both stand alone and fertilizer/pre emergent combo product with poor results. Was about to hire a lawn service just for the crabgrass control after a particularly bad crabgrass year when I decided to try Preen.

It really does the job. We have a long grass season here so I need to apply twice, the first time in late January/ early February and again in April/May. I waited a little too long for the second application and some of the crabgrass seed had sprouted in the bare spots left by the crabgrass from the previous year.

The Preen killed the small 2 leaf sprouts as advertised. By the end of the summer my lawn had recovered from years of crabgrass infestations and honestly was one of the nicest on my street. Highly recommended!.

Preen Lawn Crabgrass Control is the most effective crabgrass (and other listed weeds) control I’ve used. Follow the directions on back of bag. It works when used as directed!

I don’t like having to take care of my lawn AT ALL. But I love being out in my flower gardens. Lucky for me my neighbor actually ENJOYS lawn care! I take care of his flower gardens and he takes care of my lawn.

He swears by Preen. And I agree with him. There is no crabgrass or prostrate spurge in my lawn so I don’t have to worry about dragging the seeds into our gardens on my shoes. Works great.

Here it is, April all ready and I am starting to see small weeds starting to sprout in the flower beds. I’m trying out roundup weed barrier this year to stop the never ending weeds. First I removed all the little sprouts prior to spreading the weed barrier.

Very easy to use with the bottle spout. The directions include a very small picture, which is supposed to show what the density of the granules should look like on the ground, but it is very hard to see, much better if you look online to find a better image.

I left part of the bed untreated for a comparison in a few months. I’ll report back later on the barrier results.

I put this on my beds shortly after receiving. My beds contain river rock stone and grass prevention is critical. In April, Michigan had 23 days of periodic rain. Bottom line I still have more grass than desired but I don’t blame it on Weed Barrier.

We are due for a warmer dryer week coming up. I plan on pulling the sprouted grass then re-applying the Weed Barrier. Weed Barrier packaging makes application very easy. I’m confident this product will solve the grass in bed problem.

Very easy to spread out because it is granules and not a powder. This way you can see exactly where you are putting it. This is important because it not only kills weeds , it also kills grass. You need to be careful not to get it on your lawn accidentally.

Just have to rake it in a little and then water and you are all set for 8 months. I do this before I mulch this way you will never get any weeds coming thru your mulch. A great product that doesn’t cost very much and can last 8 months.

This is the best weed preventer I have found. Ive used Caseron for years and it truly is the best product Ive ever tried. Highly recommend. Get it down Before weeds start to show. Like early March. Then enjoy a year free of weeds.

I applied as directed on newly seeded area and watered it deeply. This large area in the back had been cleared in February after all grass and weeds were deeply dug out, I even sprayed the area prior to planting, wanting no weeds.

Seed sprouted, grew slowly because it got hot earlier than normal, but it is still green and growing. There was only one short strip where any weeds showed, and I used a safe weed killer on them. It’s been several weeks and there are weeds in every spot, even a small area that was seeded in October and was already thick with grass.

We dug the area WITH A SHOVEL and are both over 75 years old. So very disappointed. I will have to dig out the weeds by hand as much as I can, and then spray lawn weed killer where necessary.

Been using WOW! Supreme for as long as it has been offered (used original WOW! since 1984) The corn gluten based product controls dandelions, crabgrass, and broadleaf weeds with just spring and fall application.

Birds nest and fledge in my yard the entire breeding season. Robins find so many worms they tell their friends, we can see 8-10 at a time. We never water the lawn as the roots go way down and the lawn is not thirsty.

Easy granular format with broadcast spreader. My organic vegetable garden is in the middle of my yard so why would I put any chemicals on the grass next to it? A great slow release fertilizer so lawn has a steady diet without burning.
