20 Best Portable Generator For Home Power Outage (2023 Updated)

I think this is as big of a generator you can get and consider it portable. It has a nicely designed quality telescopic handle and 2 grab handles on top. It is an inverter/generator with specified very low harmonic distortion.

I figure that most electric merchandise these days are controlled by sensitive electronics and decided it would be prudent to get a unit with cleaner electricity output then a conventional generator supplies.

Considering the retail price relative to other known high quality manufacturers, I think the unit overall is a sound purchase for occasional recreational and emergency usage. My only negative criticism is the very common known issue with the automatic electric choke.

Cold starting the engine in almost all scenarios requires setting the choke and the choke should be off when the engine starts to run properly. I was anticipating this to be an issue on the unit I purchased and was not concerned about making the repair as there are several detailed videos online that provide instructions.

However, I don’t understand why this is a ongoing problem and honestly I was close to going with another manufacturer because I felt that this seemingly minor, ongoing unresolved issue may be indicative of several other soon to be exposed operating problems.

My choke would not engage upon initial start attempt. The engine would not start unlike others that did start but the choke would not disengage. My problem was the same though as the electronic choke harness was not plugged into it’s connector.

I suppose time will tell but I will say after having to remove and loosen most of the plastic panels to repair the electric choke issue, the parts and assembly that I could see seem to be quality constructed.

Once I corrected the choke the unit fired up right away and has ran great since.

I use my generator to camp while horseback riding. I prevationally purchased an i 2500 to use while horseback camping, but at the time I did not have a living quarter horse trailer with an AC. Now that I do have the living quarter horse trailer I decided to purchase the IGen4500 C.

This generator is packed with so many useful bells and whistles on it that the leading generator used for RVs does not have. I love the power start, and the remote start will keep me from going out in the cold or rain to fire up my generator when I need it.

This generator runs as quiet as my 2500 Westinghouse, which is music to your ears when you’re camping and several people are using generators at the same time. The pull handle makes it useful to get it where I need to move it, to get it out of my horse trailer down the ramp and where I plan on running it.

The large capacity fuel tank will allow it to run up to 18 hours or more depending on what I have plugged into it at that time. The digital display gives the approximate hours of run time on that tank of fuel, what the current load rate is, and how much fuel remains.

I love that it has the 30 amp RV plug on it. The two carry handles on top make it easy enough for a friend and me to carry it together when I have to lift it up. It comes with wheels, so no added expense to buy a wheel kit.

It has an automatic choke so we don’t have to worry about choking it before you start it. And best of all it fired up the very first time with one push of the on and off button right out of the box. And I saved about $2000 compared to the leading brand.

I hope this review will help you to make up your mind on your next generator purchased as well.

My review of the iGEN4500 is based on owning a Westinghouse WH2400i prior to this purchase. The iGEN4500 is roughly twice the size physically and in power. The iGEN4500 has more bells and whistles; electric and remote start, larger fuel tank, stronger engine, and carrying handle.

Unfortunately, the iGEN4500 did not improve on the oil filler location. It is still troublesome to fill and not get oil inside the compartment. Access the internal on the iGEN4500 is better than the WH2400i.

All is necessary is to unscrew some screws and you are in. I’m torn on gas consumption, though. I could get 14 hours on 1. 4 gallons of gas with the WH2400i, but I get 22 hours on 3. 4 gallons of gas with the iGEN4500.

I really wanted the electric start so I was willing to accept the higher gas usage of the iGEN4500, or at least I think I do. Now, the most recognizable difference has been in sound (loudness). I believe both the iGEN4500 and WH2400i have the same decibel rating but to my ears the iGEN4500 is noticeably quieter.

I really despise companies marketing generators as quiet and/or super quiet. It has to be as stupidest as calling power banks solar generators. Generators are not quiet, but I will say the iGEN4500 , compared to the WH2400i completely took me by surprise.

In my book, there are two wins in the iGEN4500 column, electric start and less generator noise. Just like the WH2400i, I do not plan to put many hours on the unit. It will only see occasional use. But it is nice to know I can move the unit easily outdoor, run an extension cord to wherever my load is, go back indoors, and use the remote start key fob.

It will be equally nice to barely hear the generator running from indoors. I hope this guy will give me troublefree operation just as the WH2400i during it reign.

Just bought this POS brand new from fleet farm as we are expecting big storms tonight. Assembled it and it won’t start. Tried everything. My neighbor bought the same one today as well and his runs fine.

This should not happen with a brand new product. So now Im a sitting duck thanks to generjunks trash quality. This will be returned tomorrow and I expect full reimbursement for the full tank of 93 octane ethanol free gas I put in this heap of scrap metal.

What a waste. I’m beyond POed. I always heard the rumors of their trash products but now I know they cannot be trusted.

Bought this to put on my car walk of my semi to run a 6000 btu portable standup ac I bought for my semi, it runs good when it wants to. 2 weeks into it, It dies on me so much. It’s got oil. It’s got gas , I put a Little gas treatment in it.

Seems to help. But still didn’t fix the issue. I noticed when I take the gas lid off it sputters gas everywhere. Like it runs but the tanks sucks in when it’s hot outside. Like doesn’t it have an air vent somewhere so the metal tank doesn’t suck in from so much pressure.

It’s under a lot of pressure. The gas tank. Can’t seem to keep it running. Brand new bough couple weeks ago.

After a tornado ripped through my town, I ran out and bought this generator in a hurry as we were expected to be without power for days. The generator works well, but beware that getting Generac to cover anything under warranty is very difficult.

My generator failed because the carburetor was gummed up with bad gasoline (even though I used StaBil). Though the maintenance shop admitted it was bad gasoline, Generac doesn’t cover carburetor issues.

They said the ethanol now added to gasoline causes this, yet no one could give me a place (in Indiana) to buy gasoline without ethanol. In other words, Generac’s product doesn’t work with the gasoline it’s made to run on! Cost me a lot of money for a new carburetor for a generator that only had 20 hours on it.

Don’t deal with Generac.

The product came on a pallet in great condition. Install/set-up was easily accomplished with the included tools. It is heavier than my previous generator (5,500W) which is to be expected. That said, the handles/wheels make it easy to move.

Note: I had my wife move it around the garage and she was also able to do so without straining (Huge plus incase I am out of town and she needs to set it up herself) Overall features + the high starting watts is the reason for my upgrade to this new generator.

Excited to test it out.

Purchased this generator new through Lowe’s. Started right up with propane, but refused to do so with gasoline. Called support and went through their protocols, still wouldn’t. Returned and reordered.

Second unit has the same problem. Extremely disappointing, especially since our power has been out twice since the original order. Will have to look elsewhere.

I did a lot of research before purchasing the WGen9500. For the price and the power you get out of this machine, there was no question in my mind which generator I would buy. So far I have finished all the preoperational steps and am now ready to gas it up.

What I can say so far is that when following the instructions, there are a couple things that were different for my machine than what came with the instructions. Example, It tells you to connect the negative cable to the housing of the alternator.

There is an empty screw hole here, but the cable is not long enough and was already connected as part of a wire bundle elsewhere. Also when shipped, it takes just over the amount of oil they ship it with.

I was checking frequently to ensure I didn’t over flow, but it would have been nice to know how much oil to expect to put in. I’m still very happy with my purchase and would absolutely purchase again.

This being said, I have yet to use it so I reserve some judgement until I see it run. From everything I have seen to date, I would be surprised if it doesn’t run extremely well.

Bought this in October due to our frequent power outages as of late. Order it from Amazon and was delivered in a liftgate truck. The delivery drivers brought it right to my garage. Unboxing and assembly was very simple.

Once ready, it started right away without any issues and I did the required break-in procedures. It has already powered my house during an outage with ease. After shopping around I decided on this one because of it’s features, I wanted a generator that could supply 2 220v outlets and the reviews I read seemed positive.

Couple of notes: it is fairly heavy and also not a quiet inverter type generator but I don’t think its any louder than others I have used. One feature I wish it had and something I didn’t really find on other generator from other manufacturers would be a load meter or amperage output.

last one I had had one and I really thought that was a nifty feature to have to monitor how much load you are putting on it.

Received the delivery of my W9500 generator just days before the first of most likely winter power outages in Northern New England. The electric start makes it easy to fire up the generator and even easier with the remote start.

I don’t even have to go outside and free my backside off to start the thing and get my house up and running (so that has touches of hyperbole, but it beats the heck out of pulling those ridiculous start cord that destroys my shoulder and leaves me suffering the humiliation and frustration of getting old and weak).

Would I purchase this again? Uh, yes. Would I buy a second just because — uh yes. While I haven’t put it through a significant long term power outage, it provided days of heat and barely made it obvious the power went out.

Now, if only it could re-fuel itself so I never have to leave the warmth of my New England Home in the winter. A couple of key things to note if you are interested in buying this generator. 1. It is heavy — about 250lbs.

But, the wheels work. So, if you can drag fat guy with an ankle injury off a trail or a pro football player off the field after an injury, you can lug this around and place it where you need it. 2. Is it a good lookin’ machine — It’s blue, of course, it looks good.

3. Does it feel well built? Well, I haven’t hit it with a hammer or dropped it out of my truck, but it seems well built (and seems unlikely that the bolts will vibrate themselves out when running. 4.

Is it quiet? It’s a generator. I don’t have it in my house (and hopefully you weren’t thinking you might do that) so it ain’t too bad. You can hear running outside but it doesn’t prevent me from watching movies (when I am sitting in the cold of winter, powerless, using the generator to save my soft, first-world lifestyle).

5. Is the remote key fob junk? Actually, it’s a pretty nice key fob. It isn’t the quality you’d get from a German-engineered auto — but it is durable, easy to use, and it comes with a clip so you can hook it on something.

Is it easy to find when you open the box? No, not really. I guess if you’re the type of person that looks for objects zip tied to your tools, then YES. In short, don’t panic if you don’t find it in the box — it’s strapped with a zip tie to the actual generator.

6. Can it be set up when it’s below freezing outside? Yes, but it’s cold. 7. Does the battery come fully charged? Yes, but make sure you hook the cables or you will be sitting there for hours trying to figure out why the gosh darn thing won’t start.

I am not saying I did this, I am just saying 8. Can you trickle charge the battery? Yes. It even comes with a trickle charge plug — if you’re partial to using the slick little plugins versus hooking your battery cables up the old fashioned way.

In short, worth the buy. Good product. Can’t wait to see how else I might be able t use it — maybe a snow cone stand in the summer.

It took a really long time for this generator to get delivered. Due to holiday peak loads and bad weather (I live in Texas where we dealt with the polar vortex ice storm) there were a lot of delays. I was willing to wait because the price was really good for a generator of this size and wattage.

It just arrived yesterday March 31, 2021. I have another generator, but it is only a 6500W machine and isn’t able to fully power my house, so I upgraded. I also upgraded for the following reasons: This generator: -Goes to 50a -Is 12,000W -Was priced under $900.

And under $1000 is really worth it -Has 50a and 30a outlets -Has an electric start and battery -Has duel fuel, and my house does use propane -Comes with the wheel kit included I am super swamped with work, so I didn’t have time to put oil in it and start it yet, but it looks great.

It is slightly smaller than my previous, less-powered, generator that I will be selling soon (like new). What they don’t tell you is that you are getting the updated and newer version of this generator than the one that is depicted in the add.

In the add, you can see the 50a outlet is on the far right, above the wheel. That makes it difficult to plug in a thick and rigid 50a cord because the wheel is in the way. The 50a outlet has been swapped with the 120/240 regular house outlets in the middle so it is easier to plug in.

I wasn’t sure about the double handles for moving it because my current generator has a single handle, but believe it or not, it makes the weight much lighter. It could be the better wheels as well. It’s just lighter.

I’m really looking forward to powering it up. I will update my review after starting it up.

I moved into my new home this year in Texas not long after the freeze that affected the whole country. I live in a remote location where my nearest neighbor is over a mile down the road. We the only family who lives on this road.

This is significant because we are the lowest priority in an outage. During the freeze my power was cut off for over two weeks. My pipes froze despite my best efforts to insulate them because I had no way to power my 220V water well.

It was after I moved in I found out how unreliable the power was in a weather event (as I have lost it several times since during some thunderstorms). Each time lasted more than two days without power.

Unacceptable. So I did my research and decided to buy a generator to backup my entire home. I carefully calculated my needs and arrived at the conclusion that I needed a generator at least capable of 12000 starting watts.

I wanted something that could run on propane (if needed) in the event of a gas shortage. I was impressed with the price and features of the Pulsar G12KBN and it ultimately beat my other options. Well worth the two weeks wait for it to arrive freight from California.

It had simple instructions to finish assembly and I had it ready to go in no time at all. Rigorously tested it for over an hour on propane underreal world load conditions and it exceeded my expectations.

The largest power draw in my situation is the central ac unit. I was excited to see that it handled my needs with ease. An important note though: propane power output is less than running on gasoline so it is critical to calculate your power needs before making a decision on a generator.

I almost bought a higher output standby generator for thousands of dollars more. So glad I didnt because this cost effective, very versatile generator is mobile and quite capable. It can be set up quickly when needed.

I highly recommend this generator.

Bought for home back up power. Handles our entire 2500 sqft home along with the well. Comes with bonded neutral but jumper is very easy to remove should your application need it. Oil capacity is quite a bit higher than listed in the manual.

The manual looks like an incomplete repurposing of the smaller models manual leaving some details to be desired. Its not quite by any means but it is barely audible, if at all, from inside our home. I received the updated model with the 50amp plug on the left so no connection troubles for me.

I also bought a cover from GenTent and am very happy with its fit. I did four oil changes in the first 25 hours (1,3,10, and 15) of operation and would recommend anyone else do similar due to the amount of metal shavings removed in the first few changes.

Shipping company left some to be desired but for the price the additional aggravation was worth it.

To my surprise it was not as loud as we were expecting, we hooked up a portable pancake compressor to charge it up and my wife even commented on how much louder the compressor was compared to the generator.

Do not misunderstand the generator is loud but compared to past generators we’ve had and this being a 9500 with up to 12500 start up this is not too bad for noise. Someone recommended a pulse flo muffler to quiet it down more, anyone else tried this yet? I had not considered westinghouse but after reading many reviews and researching we decided on this model.

First thing that grabbed my attention was the quick connect and disconnect for the battery, that makes it great for storage without any draw on the battery, may be minor but those are things that set it apart.

Second was the dual fuel option, the ability to run propane if out of gas. We went with the larger model because of the ability to kick on our well pump 400 feet down and run our variable booster pump.

Everything on our property is electric no gas available so this was the model for us with its extra power at start up. On this note this is something else that impressed me and leaned me to westinghouse; their power listing (on gas) was the running voltage, 9500 not the startup 12500, where other generators would list their startup voltage of the product instead of running volts.

So for the price and product comparison of multiple generators westinghouse was the choice for us, given we could have spent $500 or more for a “bigger name” that running and startup would be similar ,but for what I need and the price, based on numerous reviews this was my choice.

An extra that we’ve never had is the key fob, and it actually works, in the past everyone would shower and get ready for bed and Dad would have to go outside to shut down the generator get covered in exhaust, or rain, snow, whatever, now I push a button it stops.

Next morning dont have to bundle up and pull. pull, pull to fire the generator to get mommas coffee going just hit the button and it fires, nice touch. As I get older this push to start and key fob are nice to have, youth and pull start had their time but im not getting younger so push button start and key fob are way to go.

Many nice additions like the 50 amp option on this also drew me in, I like having the 30 and 50 option. Good generator good options happy with my choice for now. Now for a few things that could make this better, First a shutoff on the gas tank with an additional drain option, as on a quad with fuel on, off, and reserve selection.

This only has open fuel and close, to drain the tank I had to remove the line to completely drain the tank into a gas can, I do this now from the cheap gas we have too many carb cleanings and replacing gas tanks from bad gas, coating tanks and carbs.

yes I add stable and use higher octanes but just draining tanks has served me best. So i would suggest a 3 way fuel shutoff with a line for draining tank option. On that note, the gas tank, to completely drain or use all your gas you need to set the generator on an angle to get all gas to run to the shutoff.

Is an angled tank an option or a tank with a low spot at the shutoff an option? Other wise a cinder block to get it all to the shutoff works fine, except this plays in to the age again, getting it on that block is your work out.

A neutral observation; This 9500df is heavy, which makes it stable and is a huge deterrent for anyone thinking they are going to steal it, grab it ,load it in their truck and take off, If they can pick that sucker up by themselves its theirs.

I do like the weight for theft deterrent, but at the same time make sure you have a ramp to load this thing. For the weight it does move around easily wheels are nice, i prefer pneumatic but these move this unit fine on the hard surfaces.

, as for the handle I do like it tucks down out of the way and is at a good height for rolling. So overall great product good engineering ideas, I would recommend it, will work great for out in the property ,hopefully the engine and electric will last for as long as needed, but like auto insurance hopefully not needed very often.

Received my Westinghouse 9500DF generator, and overall I’m very pleased with it. I set it up this week to connect to my transfer switch to power some critical circuits in my house during power failures, which are unfortunately very common in the winter here in the Poconos.

Contrary to other reviews, I found the owners manual to be completely accurate. I’m running the unit with gasoline, and I also have a 40lb propane tank hooked up for longer outages. Switching between fuel sources while the unit is running is very simple, though the unit will stumble while the fuels are being purged, so I recommend removing load during a switch over to avoid a stall.

Starting the unit using the electric start is a real pleasure compared to the recoil starter on my old unit. A couple of caveats that aren’t clear in the pre-purchase material: 1) The 14-30 plug on the unit provides a maximum of 30 amps, as expected, but be aware that this means a maximum wattage of 7500 watts is intended to be carried on that cable.

If you need the full 9500 running wattage, that can only be supplied by the 50amp RV connector, which will not hook up directly to a 30 amp transfer switch. 2) In order to use the electric start (on the unit or using the remote) the battery switch on the generator must be in the “on” position.

This limits the utility of using the remote starter unless you’ve anticipated a power outage and had the forsight to turn the battery switch on. 3) The comes with a bonded neutral, which may not be appropriate for use with older transfer switches which do not switch the neutral.

In that circumstance, instructions are provided to make a minor alteration to unbond the neutral, but if you do, be aware that the GFCI protection on the built-in outlets will be lost, which could present a hazard.

Better to not use the built-in outlets if you’re going to be unbonding the neutral. Overall, a very solid product. I’ll be sure to follow up after I’ve used it through a northeast winter.

It appears to be a solid unit. It has enough power to support my entire home. All appliances function and can be used as normal, including central AC, window AC, two fridges, sump pump, dehumidifier, washer/dryer, dishwasher, etc.

although when the central AC comes on the inrush is a real kick in the groin for this unit but it does recover quickly and carries on. I did not buy this for the propane option (don’t want to take the hit on wattage) and I have two 30 gallon fuel drums, so I cannot attest to it’s functioning on propane as I have not tried that option.

Like many of the reviews out there for this unit, I had problems with getting this unit started. I don’t have any propane and I am disabled and incapable of using the pull-start, so the only choice I had was the auto-start sequence and gasoline.

I ran and restarted the sequence 4 times and it would not start. After going over this unit top to bottom with a fine tooth comb (had spark, was getting fuel to carburetor from tank) and after about 15 start cycles I finally found the problem.

The automatic choke apparently has a very weak actuator and the choke lever was barely brushing up against the backside of the PCV hose (which is inconveniently positioned horizontally directly in front of the choke lever) with enough force to stop the travel of the choke actuator before it reached the fully closed position and thus starving the engine during the start cycle.

I rerouted the PCV hose to run in front of a vertical line to the vapor canister which keeps the choke lever from brushing up against the PCV hose. Now, without interference the automatic choke functions properly and the unit starts within 3 seconds of initiating the start sequence.

The only other issue with this unit is the obvious design flaw of placing the 50 Amp receptacle directly over the wheel which severely impedes the use of the receptacle with pretty much any 50 Amp cable.

IšverstiShow in original languageRecently purchased to upgrade from my 6000w / 8250w generator to support our electric heating if we were to lose power during the winter. Tested the unit today and appears to handle the job much easier than the previous portable generator.

Setup isn’t awful but I do wish the funnel tube to get the oil in that was provided was an inch or two longer to make it easier to pour. Battery placement is a bit annoying to get to. I had two back surgeries so to have to get to the floor level and either snake the negative cable in, even after removing the plate in-front of the battery, took some work.

The manual doesn’t really go over needing to connect the negative terminal. It goes over how to hook up the cables to charge the battery but doesn’t go over the negative terminal in the earlier parts of the setup.

Something I’d like to see added to the manual is perhaps the wrench sizes needed called out, as I can imagine if you don’t hang onto the supplied wrenches that you’d like an easy way to determine the size needed.

(Only time I see a size is for the drain and gap plug). Comes with a double sided screw driver. Don’t see it referenced in the manual and don’t see where it is used/needed. Even with my notes, I would say setup is on average with any other generators.

Output presently seems accurate and able to operate the whole house. Living in a heavily wooded area, we lose power after many storms and the real test will be in the winter in the Northeast.

00! No matter what anyone says its $30k! By the time you install the generator, fuel type (natural or propane), labor, concrete pad, transfer switch, etc. BUT, it only does your home; you can take it on the road if needed.

So, what you do in Florida or anyplace you need power. You still install the transfer switch ($500), buy the cord ($125) and a window A/C unit ($300). I paid $940. 74 for my DuroMax XP12000EH generator on Amazon day….

yes Free shipping! So, I do have to go out in the rain before hurricane to plug it in and turn on generator, so my DuroMax powers everything in my house (I have natural gas stove, water heater and dryer), but all lights (which I switched to LED) and refrigerator.

I put the window unit A/C in the main area and directly plug into generator. So all lights and appliances work and my home is cool enough to live in. But, my costs are total like $2000. 00. So what did I do with the other money I saved on this generator? Glad you asked! HAHA.

I bought a trailer and two ATVs, my son and I stay in the trailer that has A/C shower and toilet. That cost me $17000. 00. Which we take my DuroMax generator on the road to power the trailer when we go ATVing!! So, for like $19k I am comfortable in my home during power outages and get to spend quality fun times with my son.

We were camping and this generator was so powerful the people next to us had an issue with their Honda generator, I just told them to plug into mine, and my generator powered both with no issue! So yes, the Generac turns on by its self during a power outage.

But, I don’t mind walking to my DuroMax generator in the rain to turn a key to start it and save $28,000. 00! Just saying I think my way is much better!!.

I had this generator and being a dual fuel, running on propane. very clean and no worries about fuel going bad. This not only powered up my RV it also powered up my neighbors, about 10 of them all around me.

we had power, lights, heat, TV, all the amenities that are needed (ok the tv isn’t needed). The power wasn’t plentiful and there were only a few blips, mostly when someone would turn on more heaters.

however the 12,000 watts handled it with ease a bit of a flicker in the lights but everything kept going. Would shut off once a day to check the oil and change the 10 gallon propane tank (always had gasoline as a backup, but didn’t put any in the tank)The unit was running at about 3/4 load.

Gladly the outage was recovered from and the good ole generator had a oil change, spark plugs and then stored away for the next time. Great generator.

So I have the 12,00 EH model for about 3 years now does what it’s supposed too do and backup my power up when needed. A few tips on break-in pull plug and drop table spoon of oil in and pull cord a few times so no dry start.

Best to use Marvel Mystery oil and keep it on hand as I will later explain. Ok now on break oil use a non- synthetic four cycle oil run for a hour then change. Next repeat last step but run for two hours with a load on it then change oil agin.

Now use a four cycle synthetic oil, tip stick with four cycle engine oil as they are formulated just for these motors unlike car oil. Amzoil and Honda are the best ones to use. If you are going to use gas, non- ethanol will save your carb in the long run, but if you are using just regular gas before cutting off gas turn cutoff valve to off and run out gas in line and then use drain screw on carb bowel to drain gas out carburetor before storing! On storage mode to keep motor in good shape, over long periods moisture will creep into motors, to stop this from happening, once agin pull plug and drop in a tablespoon of Marvel Mystery oil then pull cord 2-3 times then put plug back in.

I usually fire mine up about once every 45 days. Then pull my plug and add M. M oil to store it with on each time unit is to be stored!.

I love my XP13000EH generator. I only use it with propane but it has no problem running my entire 1850 square foot home. I had an electrician handle the correct installation & installed several CO2 alarms just to be on safe side.

The generator starts up every time with no issues. I will admit I have not turned on every appliance to see how it did. Having the refrigerator/freezer, ac, coffee pot, stove, microwave, television, and lights is more than enough plus hot water.

Laundry can wait in my book to when the power returns. I sleep comfortably knowing this generator is in my garage. The noise level is not bad. I usually have enough juice for my neighbor to run a 115 extension cord to their house.

And the 3 year warranty makes it even a better deal. I am now looking to buy the 15000 in addition to the one I have as an upgrade and keeping the 13000 as a back up or to loan to a neighbor in case of a storm.

I brought the 1300ex duel fuel generator as an upgrade from a older 8500 generator I had for years. I wanted to be able to run my entire home off the generator. So after doing some research I decided to by this duro max.

It has been EVERYTHING I had hoped for. This thing is powerful and It has run my entire house during a recent power outage. It’s much quieter than my previous generator and being able to run it off propane is just absolutely wonderful for me.

The push button start is just the icing on the cake. I’m comfortable knowing my wife can operate this generator if I’m not home due to its easy setup and instructions. I would definitely recommend this generator to anyone looking to get great power, easy operation and reliability from their home generator.

We bought this refurbished XT8000EFI generator a year ago. When it came it looked brand new, and only had something like 13 hours on the meter. We are currently on day four of a power outage after a storm took out 100 power poles in northeast Ohio.

The generator has kept us up and running. The house is warm, the toilets flush, the basement floor is dry, the garage door opens, the lights and computers are on — everybody is happy. This generator is more powerful than our old one, and the control system handles the well pump much better.

This generator maintains a steady supply even as loads change. The old generator (a 30-year-old 5KW Generac) would surge and oscillate the whole time the pump ran, whereas the new one gives a brief groan, but quickly adapts to the new load.

This generator is noticeably quieter than the old one. A few things to note about this generator: (1) make sure the connector fits BEFORE the power goes out. It uses a different connector than my old generator, though it looks very similar.

I had run the generator several times, but never actually hooked it up to the house until the first power glitch, and discovered the difference then. Duh! (2) If the battery is dead the fuel injected model will not start, even using the pull-cord.

If the battery is low it will not crank the starter, but you may have enough power to pull start it. I recommend installing a $20 smart trickle charger, like the Black and Decker BM3B. (3) Tie the key to the frame with a string so it can’t get lost.

One of the best generators for disaster needs. This generator has 8k running 10k surg which allows me to run a 2 story home with all lights, all ceiling fans, multiple large LED tv’s, 5 fridge and deep freezer.

my entire server rack / network items, security cameras and 2 8k window units. With all that running i am burning 2 out of 5 lights on this generator from the power meter panel. When i turn on my microwave it burns 3 out of 5 lights.

With 1 single filled to the top tank i can run everything listed above for 11 hours straight which is equal to 5 gallons of gas. The only thing i think this generator is missing is 50amp connection and inverter feature and i would love to have a larger fuel tank for longer run times.

I paid $2000 for this generator 4 years ago from Lowes and recently needed it Hurricane IDA. Prior to the storm i had 29 hours on it. I now i have 115 hours and i change the oil every 30 hours with Synthetic 10w30 Mobile 1.

Frustrated, is an understatement. Some times it would start, some times not. Last time we lost power and “need” the generator, it would not start. Called Generac tech support, all they could really do is direct me to an authorized repair service.

(50 miles away). Finally figured out what the heck was going on. (1) the battery that comes with the unit is 12 volts and rated for 9 amps (2) in the owners manual. it says to hook the battery charger up to the generator every 3 months for 12 hours.

Battery is dead by then. !! Since the generator is used only for emergencies, it sits unused for a month or more. WHAT WAS HAPPENING ?? Something was draining the battery when the generator was in the “off” state.

What I found, was that something ( I suspect it is the COsense circuit) was pulling 25 milliamps from the battery 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for months. Normally after 3 weeks the generator would not start.

025 amps X 24 hours X 30 days = 5. 25 amps More than half of the 9amps that the battery can supply!! The fix was to hook up the battery, to a floating recharging power supply and leave it connected all the time.

The Westinghouse Generators are my preferred Generator for my home. This is my second Westinghouse Generator I purchased in the past three years. My first Westinghouse Generator I purchased was in 2020, and it was a WGen9500DF with Fab, Remote control and Dual Fuel.

This Generator convinced me to switch over from the Generac Generator to Westinghouse. When I moved from my last house I decided to leave the generator with the house because I outfitted the house with a complete Transfer Switch protocol, so it only made since to leave the WGen9500 with the home.

Now I’m renting a home and I decided to get another generator just to have on hand, so I decided to purchase the Westinghouse WGen5300v. I just got around to setting up the WGen5300v and it was easy as easy can be.

The WGen5300v started up with ease, and I put a load on the generator and it operated flawlessly. I’m elated with my purchase and I’m sure anyone else who purchases a Westinghouse Generator will be happy with the generator.

Lastly, I want to be perfectly honest with anyone who reads this review and that is the price of the Westinghouse Generator was my initial reason for purchasing the WGen95000DF as the price was RIGHT.

I’m so happy I did make the initial purchase because I’m a believer of the Westinghouse Generator, so it was not an issue when it came to me buying another Westinghouse Generator.

Had a smaller version of the Westinghouse generator prior to this one (3600v). The 5300 is powerful enough to run my dryer, whereas the smaller one was not. The included wheels and pull handle are definitely a plus since it was kind of a pain to move the smaller one without them.

Also the feet and wheels keep the 5300 from having the frame sit directly on the ground, so that keeps it out of the rain/snow. I use this as auxiliary power for an off-grid cabin. It has enough power to run a refrigerator, chest freezer, washer & dryer (LP gas), lights and water pump.

The 3600 only had enough power to run some things – not everything at once (and not the dryer at all). Works great for my application, and I believe it would be a good choice for an RV or emergency power application as well.

Only drawbacks vs the smaller version is that it burns more fuel (approx. one 4. 7 gal. tank to power the above mentioned devices for about 12 hours) and it is a bit louder while running.

I ordered this from Lowe’s and picked it up yesterday. I assembled it yesterday and today placed an order for the proper L14-30 power cord to my Reliance Manual Transfer Switch. I have not yet started the Generator.

The generator includes a small 12V battery for electric starting, a quart of oil and a funnel, a small wrench and a spark plug socket. I purchased a trickle charger and have connected it to the battery.

It took less than an hour to bring the battery to full charge. The only issue I have with the setup of this Generator is one of the wheels is about 6 degrees off vertical. From the best I can tell, the bracket which is welded to the frame and receives the axel is slightly out of alignment.

It is minor as this generator will not frequently be moved and the problem is not worth attempting to correct. Overall this generator seems to be well constructed.

This unit comes double stacked on two pallets which are joined, then the generator is bolted to the top pallet. I found that if one pulls it about halfway off the pallet and places a doubled blanket under the end of the generator as it comes off pallet it will easily roll on the frame right up on its end.

[make sure you roll up on the end away from the electrical plugs] That done one can put the wheel kit and the front foot assembly on with out interference. When finished, it will then roll right over onto its wheels and the foot.

(I am age 77, and did this by myself with ease!) Since it is shipped with no fluids in it, there is no reason to use braun rather than brains! A minor cause for pause is the nut and bolt bag that comes with the hardware which is loose, and unmarked in the bag.

That said it really works out OK, since the excellent assembly instructions are pretty clear as to what goes where. It is a heavy unit, but it is absolutely perfectly balanced to roll around. I was shocked at the ease it can be wheeled around.

Mine came together in about an hour, and that includes adding oil which is supplied. Be advised it comes with 2 quarts of SAE 30, which is in contravention to the stickers on the generator. The owners manual, however, does call for SAE 30, so no the shipping department didn’t send it with the wrong oil.

Running this thing at 60 percent load is 10,500 watts, any kind of intelligent circuit management is going to allow for all the power one could want shy of a permanent stand-by unit. The beauty of the 17500 is that it can be used for many things on and off-site, and as a real bonus when it’s not being engaged, it can be secured in a safe place and out of the weather.

My unit was delivered in perfect condition. Is it expensive? Who knows – its well beyond the top of its class – to what would one compare it? Finally one of it’s greatest attributes; made/assembled in the USA!.

Home sweet home is what I say when I need to run this generator. I bought this unit 2nd hand thinking I may use it a couple of years then replace it, that didnt happen, Im actually shocked that I found such a reliable generator secondhand that works as well as this unit does.

I understand why the DOT has these units or similar units all over the highways and roadways running different utilities as back ups. I could have NOT picked a better generator to buy I believe! I take good care of the unit, careful not to leave gas standing in the carb and not to over run oil usage time and once a year do a full maintenance schedule but never have I had to pamper this unit, It is a monster of power.

I have a medical condition and I bought this generator so I could keep certain things running during power outages but come to find out it easily ran my whole 3500sqft house. Unfortunately as time went on, two years after purchasing the unit my illness caused me to have to sell and downsize my home, it was an absolute blessing I was able to bring this generator with me due to its portability.

This generator has never let me down and every time Ive needed it the unit fired right up to give my family comfort during the storms. If you do regular maintenance and take care of this unit keeping it covered or in a dry area you will get years of reliable use of this unit.

I am so confident in the reliability of this generator that I am looking into converting it to flex fuels for reliable continuous use if gasoline was unavailable. I truly believe it would be worth the cost to make this investment on this unit.

I’m really surprised that this is considered reconditioned. When I unpacked it, it looked brand new. Not a scratch on it. At 192 lbs. , it is bigger than I would have expected, but that’s on me for not researching more.

Once I put gas in, it started right up with no trouble at all. As this is a traditional generator as opposed to an inverter style, I had some concerns as to how some of the electronic devices it would be backing up would run, namely a tankless water heater and a pool pump system and control.

They worked like a charm with the Generac. No issues that I could identify. An excellent purchase overall!.

Got from estate sale, owner said was submerged from Sandy. Took a chance & found bent exhaust push rod, rusted frozen flywheel & coil, muddy fuel tank, carb, shut off valve, low oil warning alarm, on/off switch and fouled spark plug.

After on and off downtime working, got it running but no generator output. Found worn brushes, dirty slip rings, and no continuity thru rotor windings. Ended up being a broken wire on opposite end of slip rings.

Resoldered wire & light coating epoxy. Started 1 pull & adjusted governor speed to proper rpm for hertz (61. 5 hz no load says, under load should be right at 60). Began surging & found jet of brand new carb dirty.

Cleaned & now all set. $50 estate sale generator well worth it, about $30 put into it. Every review has good stuff about GENERAC, so think ready for next hurricanes (East Coast gotta be set, especially response from power companys lately).

I’ve had a chance to run this unit for awhile the other day and it works great. I only connected a device that only required a small load however it seemed to work very well and I expect that it will preform as well in the future.

The setup and installation were simple and all the parts were there. Followed the easy read instructions and “bingo” it was up and running. I purchased this unit after several price discount that were offered however it a good buy even at it’s regular price.

I am sure glad they had this unit. It was very easy to assemble. Hurricane Ida hit and the power was out for 10 days. It ran 8 to 10 hours a day and never faulted in any way. It was very easy to start, it ran everything I needed (except to central a/c).

I just took it out of storage for the new hurricane season. I checked everything out filled it with gasoline and started on the first pull. Very very satisfied.

Because generators are often used infrequently, it is very common for the gasoline to go stale in them. I intend never to put gasoline in mine. LP gas (propane) works fine and in fact it starts uncommonly easy, which I attribute to its LP fuel source.

Because it’s not an inverter generator the quality of the electricity it produces is not good for charging electronics, but it will certainly charge a battery that will then charge your electronics. I instructed my daughter to buy one as a backup for their home, and just send a link to a buddy who is looking for a generator.

LP is less energy dense than gasoline, so it consumes it a bit faster than it would if you were running gasoline, but I’m totally fine with that. I also bought a corrugated stainless steel hose off Amazon ($14) that slipped over the end of the exhaust so I can run it all the way out of my bus.

I run common tools in building outta my Skooley and this is just the right KW size. Wouldn’t cover the surge required to start a 3hp tablesaw, but does fine for my homeowner quality Rigid tablesaw.

worked all of about 8 hours now won’t run. I have a duromax sidekick 2000 watt generator which is almost identical, but a better generator for sure. This generator is not as quiet and is much weaker, than the claimed voltage This generator appears to be a cheap copy and is a massive failure, it will not run even 1000 watt appliances.

It worked on my 350 well pump a few times, then stopped. I tried it on a dehumidifier and it ran for an hour then died. It is not as good as my 4 year old duromax side kick!.

Unit was delivered in the original box with no obvious damage to the box or the unit. When removing the unit from the box , I noted rattle coming from a loose part inside the unit. I also observed the DC breaker was depressed past the normal “engaged” position and was inoperable (see pic).

When I opened the unit to add the oil, I was able to retrieve 2 small parts (see pic). After I finished prep, I attempted to start with no success. The good news, is the eBay return policy and process worked well albeit I have to empty all the fluids (oil & gas) and lug this 50+ lb unit to the Post Office to send it back.

This Generator is the best purchase in my whole life. Is awesome, amazing. I bought it expecting to keep my fridge running for couple hours, then I was inreasing an hour every day to test its efficiency.

Now I leave it running for 12 hrs and runs like a smooth machine. The secret is to change the oil every day (10W-30) and verify the spark plug. Once you do that, wont have no problem. It run my whole house.

Super!!! You won’t regret. Based in my experience it’s a really 5 stars.

One of the axle pins was blocked by a motor mount. I could not use the supplied clip. I substituted a cotter pin, which is OK if you have a box of miscellaneous pins like I do. I haven’t started it up yet.

Don’t know if it runs or generates electricity yet.

I originally wanted to get a generator that could handle 240V for a workshop with a plasma cutter and welder. I was going to get a smaller one that was on sale, but decided to step up because the house has a well and septic system, and a power outage would mean no water and food spoilage.

I ran through the first 4-hour no-load break-in run and replaced the oil. The first-run oil does have some very fine metal dust, which is expected (hence the break-in), and it generates power just fine.

I haven’t loaded it with anything yet, but I’m planning some welding in the near future. I originally had it running in the shop space (think single-car garage) with the garage door open about 8 inches.

Sure enough, it shut down with a CO warning, so I ended up bringing it outside for the rest of the run. I’d like to eventually have an enclosure for it to reduce the sound output, but I’m pretty sure it will need some decent venting fans to keep it fed with enough oxygen.

This thing is heavy. Purchase the wheel kit, it makes moving it less of a PITA. My wheel kit was one washer short, but I had some extras that were a little thicker and made for a better fit. I also bought a Thunderbolt starter battery from HF, but I added a bit of rubber sheet for padding on the bottom and the top.

It’s probably not necessary, but it makes me feel a little better. I have not done a frequency check or looked at the output waveform on a scope or anything, and I can’t speak to the durability, but I’m not going to be using this regularly unless things go bad.

The generator itself is pretty big and beefy. It’s rated at 8kW continuous, but I don’t think I’m ever going to need that much for any length of time. I do have electric appliances (stoves, dryers) so 5-6 kW would be expected at most, especially in a power-out situation.

So far, I’m happy.

When there’s a big power outage such as a hurricane , you struggle to find gasoline. Even if you find it, you have to transport it, then fill and monitor the generator tank level. A slight hazard and a big pain.

If you do this, first run the generator on Gasoline for an hour or so to break it in. This is a must from what I heard. Then do the conversion to Natural Gas. It looked just like the old carburetor and bolted up fine.

I had little problem with getting the air filter to fit within the generator frame, but no big deal. It wanted to hit the frame because Carb was slightly longer or something. I forget why. I pre-tested it with a 50% load for output comparing gasoline to NG and it did fine.

Then during the Texas freeze it proved itself. I flipped the main house breaker off, (Very Important) then back fed via an independent 220 plug I have in my garage. You must know what you are doing to try this, otherwise you could send voltage back though the service line and hurt/kill a linemen etc.

It’s best to have a transfer switch instead of trying this. I have since installed a transfer switch to be safe. I also flipped off all of the big consumers of electricity such as the Air Conditioners.

This generator is not big enough to run even a 2 ton central A/C unit. It could handle the running wattage, but not the start surge. Something would burn up. either the A/C or the generator, wiring etc.

I was then able to run the NG furnace and keep my home warm helping keeping my pipes from freezing. The only load was the Furnace fan since it was NG. This also allowed use of the a large capacity Samsung 110 volt window unit A/C, the NG stove, some fans, all my lighting.

We also used the 1100 watt microwave as needed, but used good judgement not to use to mush at once and the over load the generator or the homes wiring system. With all of this said, I have a long background of understanding electrical and mechanical.

If you are not experienced at both. Don’t try this conversion from gasoline to Natural Gas. Added note: I ran like this for several days and did not notice much of an increase in my NG gas bill at all.
