15 Best Non Prescription Flea Medicine For Dogs (2023 Updated)

I purchase this product for my 13 year old – 5 pound 2 ounce Chihuahua. I started purchasing from Petmeds because my Vet has been having supply issues, and wanting to change my Fur babies medication to different medications every month to every 3 months.

Considering my Fur babies age and possible complications in constant changing of medications I decided that Petmeds was a better option for our Family. I also like that there are some savings involved with purchasing from Petmeds than purchasing from my Vet.

Petmeds also includes a treat for my Fur baby, however I do have to break it into several smaller pieces. Maybe consider a treat for a small Fur baby instead of one that would be more appropriate for my larger German Shepherd Siberia Husky Fur baby.

Great product. Wonderful you can buy it without a prescription. Only over the counter product I have found that actually works to kill fleas. Tried both frontline plus and advantage 2, both didn’t work.

Will continue to buy this product.

Have used Vectra for my dogs for years and have had no problems with fleas or ticks. I like that Vectra has a repellency factor which causes insect paralysis. insects don’t always have to bite to die.

Loved paying online and just running in to pick it up. Have used this product for 5 years on my six dogs. They are the best flea and Tick collars around. There is some controversy going on about these collars at present time.

People are saying they are killing dogs. Animals can have allergic reactions to anything. I had a dog that had a reaction to the drops that you put on the back of the dogs neck. I contacted the vet that I got the med from and took her in to have her checked out.

She was allergic and he gave her some kind of shot and she was fine. You just have to keep a close eye on your pet for a couple days after using any flea and tick meds and contact your vet if there are ANY changes In your pets health.

Seresto is for flea and tick protection. It works!! I have been using them for about 5 years or so now. Since my dog’s groomer told me about it. I have not seen a flea or tick since. Since it is a collar there is less danger than drops between the shoulder blades.

So easy to miss the exact location. Very highly recommend this product.

Have used these for 10+ yrs. They really work. BEWARE of KNOCK-offs. Learned how to can tell if the collars are original vs knock-off. On the real Bayer Collar the number on the back of the container is also stamped on the collar.

There are a lot of places (especially on-line) selling knock-offs.

My dog suddenly developed environmental allergies this fall, and it has been a non-stop battle with constant itching and flaky skin since. Our vet recommended we give him medicated baths 2 times a week, but those only provided temporary relief; the other days, he was right back to itching.

It got so bad that he gave himself bald spots down his side and on his chest, and his hair overall was just drier and thinner. He’s always had thick, shiny hair, so the change was quite drastic. Even Benadryl did nothing for his itching.

I’ve tried just about everything at this point, and we finally have his itching under control! In addition to his twice weekly medicated baths, I now use this spray after his baths and in between baths, and it has helped return so much moisture and life back to his coat and skin.

I really make sure to thoroughly spray him all over, rub the spray throughout his coat, and then go through his coat with a slicker brush to make sure it’s distributed. If I apply it to his dry coat, it is a little bit greasy feeling, but not to the point where it transfers onto furniture or feels gross to touch.

Overall, I’ve seen a drastic decrease in itching, and his coat and skin feel much better. All that said, I am doing other things which may also be helping. As I said, he gets medicated baths twice a week, and I also supplement his food with fish oil and Zesty Paws Aller-Immune bites.

I think these products have all been working in conjunction to really help stop this awful flare up.

My dogs and I live in the desert which means dry fur year round. I wanted a leave-in conditioner that would help keep their skin and coats healthy plus dandruff and static free. THis product does seem to condition their coats, we’ve had less dryness and almost no static, but they are STICKY for the first 24 hours after I put it on.

Then the stickiness gets on my hands (and the sofa!) when I pet them. Maybe it’s because my dogs all have short double coats, but it’s just unpleasant to cuddle the girls until it soaks in (or rubs off?).

The smell is nice, but not overpowering, my super allergic dogs don’t seem to itch with this and like I said, their coats are better. If only they weren’t sticky after use. I won’t be purchasing this again.

So I originally ordered panacur from Chewy. I have used the product many times before as I worked as a kennel manager and took care of employers breeding dogs. I’ve known many other well known breeders to use the exact one I ordered.

However Chewy didn’t agree so I cancelled the order. I needed to rush and get a dewroemer because well the longer I wait the more the round worm is just going to be rent free in my dogs body and that’s a no no for me.

Sooo 6am this morning I drove out to Walmart to only see this brand available even tho their website showed panacur. I was very hesitant about it but said I jave no choice. I stood there reading over and over looking on line how to administrator these tablets.

It did. not have any instructions on how far apart you should give the pill. All it states is give one and see tour vet. That’s stupid! This is why I wanted Panacur. It’s basic knowledge and actually has info on how many times to give and the amount.

I would not recommend it.

We got our dogs last spring. So in order to protect them from fleas and ticks in the summer we bought some essential oils (recipe from the Internet) and sprayed the solution every day over our two dogs.

It didn’t work well. Ticks still bit them(( This spring we decided to buy this solution. The smell is super strong. Dogs don’t like it and me neither. Only my husband says that it’s nice. It’s been 6 days now that we use it (we sprayed it every other day) and already two ticks 🥺 So I regret buying two bottles.

P. S. but we never had fleas though.

We have enjoyed the pleasures and pain of many furry, hairy and woolly loving family members in our long lifetime together. All of them had their individual characteristics however they all were suseptical to common parasitic infestations, in particular fleas.

Over the years we have found that isolating our pets from others is the best way to keep our cats and dogs flea free. Of course this is not always possible as even a few seconds of close contact with another animal can result in flea transfer causing a flea infestation of all of our pets and their environments which can be very difficult to eliminate no matter what methods/products are used.

Obviously prevention is better than cure. So topical treatments are available and recommended for both cats and dogs We tried many brands promoted by vets, friends, breeders and other pet owners. Some came with such good reputations according to those promoting the products that we were shocked when we found they did not work.

On one visit to a very experienced vet he pronounced that our cat had fleas. Not many but she did have fleas nevertheless. We told him we had been treating her with a well known popular and not cheap brand.

He said the only effective way to prevent fleas and many other parasites in dogs and cats is to use Advocate. He gave us some to try and over the many years since our pets have been completely flea and worm free.

We still isolate our pets from others as much as possible but we have confidence in knowing our four legged family members are very safe from catching nasty parasites from all sorts of sources when we ensure they have their regular dose of Advocate.

Advocate is different from other brands because it actually works – always !.

I have been using this since I got my little boy. I use this one because the RSPCA uses it. It is easy to apply and smells good. It appears to work, as I haven’t seen any of the target organisms on my boy.

Just make sure you apply it high enough on the neck and head that your little darling can’t lick it off. My husband applied it once and he put it too low on the neck. My little boy licked some off and was sick and not moving much for at least 5 days.

That only happened the once and it has been good otherwise.

I appreciate Bravecto’s effectiveness. I’m forced to use the topical version for our pit bull; she detests the oral no matter how much effort and cleverness I devote to getting it down her throat. She has very short fur.

It’s more challenging administering topical to her than it was for our longer-furred dogs. Today she immediately shook off the topical, spraying droplets in a 4 foot radius on the kitchen floor. What I learned today is that for her next dose I will 1) administer it outdoors 2) cover the administered area with Saran wrap for a minute or so, to let as much as possible absorb before she attempts to shake it all off 3) wear rubber gloves If you have other suggestions for the topical, I’d like to hear them.

Our dog is 14, and has some kidney and liver issues, and we did not want to use edibles. So we recently switched to Bravecto Topical. Chewy was great, shipped fast at a good price. Our dog tolerated the topical very well with no skin reaction, unlike prior skin reactions to other brands.

Easy to apply, and the 12 week dose is very convenient. No sign of fleas or ticks still about 7 weeks after application. Definitely a great product and Chewy is very easy to deal with.

Yesterday morning, I purchased Credelio for my 15 lbs dog. She had been itching with fleas for about one week. I needed a prescription to purchase and the vet I’ve been taking her is nearly impossible to get in to see since Covid restrictions began.

I took her to another vet in my mom’s town to get the prescription so finally could place the order. Our 9 month old F1b Pyredoodle takes Credelio like a champ. They are like treats to her. She has been on these since her first puppy check-up at 8 weeks old and we have never had an issue with her getting sick from the pills.

She has also never had a flea or tick so the pills are defiantly doing what they are suppose to. That being said, we do not live in a particularly insect dense environment. We are in the desert and she is inside most of the day.

I’ve been using this for a few years now. I’ve never seen a single flea or tick on Maggie until 2 days ago. We walked near some wooded areas that day and I found a tick on her that night. Thanks to Credelio, it was dead as can be.

Our Papillon has been on advantage multi for two years now. No critters and no health issues. Rescued him from a bad situation. And only knew he was older, now at least 12, and an unknown medical history.

Also, he has no teeth, so chewables were not an option. Researched and this was pretty much the only option from a safety perspective. Especially for an older dog with no history or teeth. Thankfully it turned out to be as advertised and recommended.

If you love your dogs like I do, by all means, switch to Advantage Multi. It’s easy to apply, has less incidents of near issues, and it works!.

Cleo’s vet switched to ingested treatments and our girl is super picky about what she eats. Reviews of ingested included inducing vomiting. So. the topical she has been using successfully for the past year is still available at PetMeds at a much better price than the vet’s office.

Glad the vet provided the info to PetMeds easily, so Cleo will remain on Advantage Multi successfully.

Years ago I had a dog that was always on flea meds but she was chewing right at her tail and her feet. It was just awful. I tried everything. Changed her food, allergy meds, etc. then someone told me to try Comfortis – apparently even on flea meds if a dog gets one flea bite and is allergic she will scratch horribly and chew her feet.

Put her on Comfortis and it stopped! Her hair all grew back. I’m a total believer in Comfortis!.

Like Advantage or Frontline. We’ve tried other brands, but Comfortis is the only one that works to control fleas on our ginger and white tom. One can tell because his white underside fur turns rust from licked blood if fleas are excessive.

Comfortis works for several months. The only problem is pilling him. He does not like the taste. We’ve wrapped it in canned cat food, but he eats around the pill. Can’t make him swallow it. I notice the product now is advertised as meat flavored.

So back in like 2007, I got a puppy and we took her to the vet for check-up. The flea and heartworm topic came up. He was trying to sell us a certain brand and the price was pretty high. I told him I can’t afford that.

This was when I didn’t have a bunch of money to spare but we did what we could to take care of our puppy. But anyway. Back to this story. After going back an forth, he finally was like “well there is this cheaper option” and then comes out with Revolution.

We used it and it worked very well! Like zero fleas or anything! Over the years, going through different vets, I always try and see where they’re at when it comes to flea treatments and stuff. They ALWAYS will say they don’t recommend Revolution because they don’t trust it.

It’s sooo weird to me. Almost like there are companies paying them to do that. Our newest vet is really nice. When I told her about Revolution, she said the same thing! I swear by this stuff. It really does work! She wanted is to buy chewables and says the topical doesn’t hold it’s strength as long and this and that.

I told her I will think about it. And I did. I’m sticking to my go to! And I was reading some of the negative reviews on here. Some were saying they still see fleas. What I do is give my dog a bath using oatmeal flea shampoo.

One from the PetSmart. Then wait till the next day after your dog is dry! Put half the tube between the dogs shoulder blades and the other half on the dogs rear leg blades, just above where the tail comes out.

Idk how you say it lol. But this is what I have been doing for years and trust me. It works!.

We have been using Revolution on our kitty since he was 6 months old. He came to us from the shelter with coccidia and roundworm. No matter how hard we tried, the roundworm refused to clear. After reading that Revolution is the only flea product that also deals with parasites, we requested an RX from the vet.

Within two weeks of starting him on Revolution, the roundworm finally cleared. He is now 3. 5 years old, and he has never had another positive parasite test since. He is tested at least twice a year, because we walk him on-leash.

He munches on grass where fleas could easily hitch a ride. Very effective product. I just wish it hadn’t doubled in price over the last year. The first time we put it on him, his fur disintegrated a bit at the application site.

However, that has never occurred again in the three years since.

I tried several over-the-counter flea medications for my dog and cat, and soon I noticed I was being bit and my pets were scratching all the time. I thought I had mosquito bites. I thought the dog had allergies so put the dog on prednisolone.

It seemed to help, but he gained weight and had a ravenous appetite. After a time he started to itch again. The cat, on the other hand, got steroid shots to no avail. He was itchy no matter what. Meanwhile, we were still giving both of them OTC flea meds regularly every month.

Finally our vet used a flea comb on both of them and they were loaded with fleas. I was appalled. After completely de-fleaing the house and both the cat and dog, we went back to Revolution. We haven’t had a problem since.

I’m never again trusting an OTC flea med. That experience was no fun, believe me. Not for any of us. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it myself.
