20 Best Mud And Snow Tires For Trucks (2023 Updated)

I normally use a different brand of snow tire, but time & availability dictated that I try a different tire. I put them on my 2002 Toyota Avalon and headed east into a winter storm on I-90. Between the Montana border & Missoula there was a period of over an hour where I didn’t see another vehicle going the same direction as me.

Deep snow and near white-out conditions but these tires just pushed ahead, never giving any hint of slippage. I drove them safely through the storm then onto cold & icy conditions in Wyoming & Colorado on our way to Florida.

On the return trip we encountered more winter storms on our way to California. At Donner Pass we were forced to chain up just because we didn’t have 4WD. I drove just far enough to get out of sight of the patrol station, got out & removed the chains, then headed on in much better conditions that we had driven through in Montana.

I would highly recommend this tire for deep snow as well as compact snow & ice. They have performed much better than expected.

I run these tires on all my vehicles winter and summer. Great wet traction in the rain and excellent traction in the snow. We need to get out in the winter and live in the boonies so good snow tires are a must.

In the summer, living on a dirt road means mud and these tires handle slick mud roads as well as they handle snow covered roads. I run off road in the summer getting into and out of farm fields so good traction off road is a must.

These tires are a bit noisy but not offensively. They are directional tires so they must be mounted according to the directional arrows on the sidewalls and rotated regularly. My recommendation is rotating them every oil change or 10,000 miles.

I recommend them for any type of hazardous driving, snow, rain or mud. If you have to go, these tires will get you there. The LT truck tires are rated 10 ply for heavy loading as well. I have a set (from Tire Buyer) on my wife’s SUV and with 20K miles on them, no apparent wear.

I live in Idaho and we get all types of weather. I purchased this set of FIrestones for the winter months that, sometimes, go from October to April. Four years later, they need replaced after leaving them on year after year, even through the summer months.

We probably put 25,000 miles on them over the course of four years but, remember, they are winter tires and we didn’t remove them at the end of winter. I would assume they would still have a lot of tread if we had done this.

As for winter driving, they performed very well. We never got stuck in the sometimes 8 inches of snow in our long driveway. We never slid off the icy roads, and we had roads that were straight ice a few times last winter.

I am impressed with the tires and would definitely buy again.

I bought these tires to go on my daughter’s 2002 Chevy Impala. We don’t get a tremendous amount of show in Pierre, and what snow we do get often melts before the next snowfall. What we end up with are streets that aren’t always plowed (because of only an inch or two of snowfall) which become covered with packed and glazed snow.

It may begin to melt, but then it refreezes at night. We also have lots of hilly streets, so having tires that brake well on ice is a priority. These Winterforce tires performed well in snow, but they slid considerably on glazed snow and ice.

My daughter told me a few days ago that she slid into an intersection near our house, so being the suspicious dad who didn’t automatically believe her denial that she was not over-driving the road conditions, I took the car out to test it on the icy streets.

The Winterforce tires slid when braking and during acceleration. I took my wife’s car our to test her Bridgestone Blizzak tires with over 20k miles on them, and there was no sliding whatsoever at similar speeds.

Thankfully, the Winterforce tires were new enough to be studded. Now, $85 later, my daughter has a car that can handle icy roads. I wouldn’t recommend these tires to anyone who encounters more glazed snow and ice than they do snow.

If snow is your menace, these will do fine.

Ive had 2 pairs of these tires (13″ and 14″) and have ran them on 4 different vehicles (98 4dr stratus, 2 96 neons, and a 98 metro). They are an excellent tire for mud/snow. They are pretty soft and have an aggressive tread pattern, at least for a car tire.

These two features make them (in my opinion) unbeatable if you deal with snow of if you like to have a bit of fun in light off-road situations. Though i got great life (4 years) out of my first pair, i didnt run them year-round.

Cons: All of the things that make this tire great are also its down sides. Aggressive, deep tread means there will be a small amount of road noise at speed and you may get some wallowing up front if you take sharp turns too quickly.

The soft rubber compound means that you will get great grip, especially in summer, but you will eat them up quickly if you run them year-round, spin them a lot, or travel mostly on dry pavements. I once read that tires are like shoes; dont wear slick sandals in the snow and dont wear insulated studded boots on the beach.

Just use common sense with them. In all, i HIGHLY recommend these tires. They are extremely capable in mud and snow and have literally given me several years of dependable service.

I needed a tire which not only is great in the snow and ice of Maine, but also for the back roads during white water season. These have been just about perfect. Coming up on 10k miles and have used them in just about every condition imaginable from snow & ice to mud and rock, on old logging trails and Interstates.

So far these are exactly what I was looking for in terms of traction and durability with extra sidewall plies. They are slightly louder than the OEM tires but otherwise superior in every way. Thought I might have to stud them given all the icy roads up here but a few bags of sand in the back of the Taco and I am good to go, even up the steeper icier roads in the hood.

Handling has been surprisingly good on dry & wet pavement as well & I have noticed no problems with traction turning or stopping. Summers on old logging roads can be treacherous with lots of old logging junk strewn on the roads.

Have torn up two OEM tires hitting rocks and metal left behind. So far, not a sign of road damage. Hoping to get some good mileage out of these and so far, no signs of wear. Perfect tire for my environment!.

I drive an E250 van for a living and after installing these winter tires i am blown away by the traction you have an icey roads and also deep snow. The design has deep treads and even LOOK like they can take on snow.

I live at 8,600 ft altitude in the Rocky Mountains and this is the best ice and snow tire without studs I’ve ever had. Our roads can be treacherous with ice in spots, often black ice that is not visible.

Drive past cars off the road, spun-out, flipped, etc. and just keep on going. Used studded snow tires for years – nothing better for traction on ice, but they are noisy and add no value in warm seasons.

These just work on ice and snow. On top of that, they wear a long time – mine are two years old, have put 30,000 on them. They are still ‘legal’ (put quarter in tread), but I will buy a new set on their 2 year anniversary.

We live in Northern Michigan in a snow belt area that gets more snow than the surrounding areas. We also live on a private road that has two “big” hills. Nine years ago we were going to sell a Toyota Corolla we had because even with FWD it could not get up our road so many days it just sat there and we only drove our 4×4 truck.

We were told by a very “honest” Subaru dealer that he would love to sell us a car, but he said that really if we invested in “true” snow tires. not all season tires, that our Corolla would handle our situation without any problems.

Have had these tires for my 2013 Subaru since December 2015. Put them on in mid-November, remove them late in March. Have better than 50% of tread life left. On the good side, excellent snow tire, great in slush and when driven judiciously, quite good on ice.

Fair on dry pavement so long as the temperature is below fifty degrees Fahrenheit. Above that temperature and the tires become squirmy and do not track well. My biggest issue is rain. Even if it has been raining for several days on a well traveled road, the tires will slide if you apply the brakes too firmly or if you take a curve to quickly and I am speaking of temperatures in the mid-forties.

Makes the car scary to drive. Use Vredestein Quadtrac tires for three seasons and they refuse to slide when wet;.

I have this set installed on a 2010 Jeep JK which is lifted. I used to run Goodyear MTRs but decided to try Toyo which my friend recommended. Now, I will never buy anything BUT Toyo. The tires are so well balanced even for 35s, the ride is very good on highway along with directional stability.

No wondering with these OC MTs. Offroad – traction is great in sand, mud and snow. I rotate my tires (5 wheel rotation) every 6K miles by hand. I do this every time I change oil and the wear is SO even.

If you don’t rotate and you get uneven wear – that’s a you problem. If you don’t get your wheels balanced – that’s also a you problem. Treating these tires properly will make them last a long time. I just got a JT Gladiator and will be putting Toyos on it as well.

My JK needs a new set as well so more money for tires and in this case – Toyo. These tires have been through the Black Rock Desert, Alabama Hills, Coyote Flats, Panoche Hills – BLM land and performed perfectly.

I was looking for a set of aggressive mud tires. After looking around I decided to go with a set 35×12. 5r17s on my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. Installed these February of 2012 with 100k on the truck. I have had these through 2-3 foot snow drifts, gone through some pretty nasty mud holes and towed way more weight than my truck is rated for and have never had an issue with the tires.

They do everything a mud tire is supposed to do and some things a mud tires shouldn’t do. It has done everything very well. When I bought these tires I was warned that they will only last 30-40k due to the aggressive tread pattern.

With just over 80k miles on them them now I feel like I have got my money’s worth. They are starting to show signs of age with some weather cracks, the front tires are starting to chop a little but not bad.

Mostly due to a lack of tire rotations. I have recommended and bragged about these tires often. I would strongly recommend these to anyone looking for a mud tire. If you are wondering yes they do make some noise, I feel like they are on the lower average of the mud tire world for noise.

Yes I did notice a decrease in fuel economy but I went to a larger tire from the factory size. Yes I did notice a steering difference but only until I figured out what air pressure to run the tires at.

50psi was the sweet spot on my truck lower pressure cause a wondering feel at high way speed higher pressure made the ride feel rough. I never really noticed a braking feel change tho. I hope this helps someone make a decision on these tires.

I bought these tires (37-13. 50-R17) hoping for the best. I knew when the tire shop balanced them they were going to be great. It took very minimal weight to balance them. The guy said they were as round as a Michelin street tire.

They are awesome! I rotate every 3000-3500 miles. I have 25K miles on them and they look great. No doubt I’ll get 60K+ out of them. I use my truck for daily driving, work and off road. They worked flawlessly on the trails at Uwharrie National Forest and others.

You will not be disappointed!.

Had on a stock suspension 09 Tacoma. Fronts started cupping bad. Took to the dealer who couldn’t find a thing wrong with the truck and did an alignment anyways. I rotated them and the new fronts started cupping after a month.

Some people say they haven’t had a problem, others had the same problem as me and can’t find anything wrong other than the tires themselves. Yes they are mud tires so they’re not made for pavement. Either way they should’ve at the very least lasted longer than 3 months.

Traction, traction traction !! That is why I bought these 30×9. 5 15″ Falken Wildpeak tires and in that department they delivered in spades. I have a very steep mountain gravel driveway and a old F-150 with standard differential.

The Cooper AT3 all-terrains on the truck spun like crazy on the rear, so much so that I could barely get up the mountain. With these tires I now go right up and mostly don’t even spin a tire anywhere, they grip just that good.

But the good does not stop there. You’d think with such an aggressive MT tread of these tires that they be loud or hum on the highway. NOT SO. These are surprisingly quiet at 65+ MPH. Shockingly quiet actually.

So much so I may also put them on my full size 4×4 Toyo SUV when it needs tires. If they weren’t that quiet I never even consider it. Granted, I’ve not had these long enough to give any feedback on tire wear or longevity.

But if you want great traction performance AND a mostly quiet ride then these tires will likely work great for you. They arrived quickly after order and were in perfect shape. I even mounted them on the factory steelie rims, which are only 6″ wide.

This is the limit of how small a rim width you can use on this size tire, but they fit fine with good tread contact across the full width of thetire, no problems here. I will say though that this is a couple inch diameter larger tire than the stock size (exactly what I wanted) and thus also gives a good bit more ground clearance to the truck.

I would have also put the next size up 31s on the truck if I had wider factory rims that typically come on the 4×4 F-150, but these shall function and look just fine. I’m very happy all around with these tires, the performance, the price and the delivery were all outstanding as purchased from hockey1242gk2 out of Philly in Aug 2021.

The pics in the ad made the tires look a little on the gray side. They are not, they are standard deep black upon arrival and appear top quality in all respects. The ad pic is just washed out, probably a camera issue.

No color worries with mine whatsoever.

I installed these tires on a 2000 jeep Cherokee. Then took it for a test ride. Lots of snow and mud in Montana this time of year ! They never lost traction in either mud or snow. Great tire for four wheeling.

Made specifically for the 2020+ Super Duke R, these are very confidence inspiring and are in another dimension compared to the Battlax’s that came stock on my 2003 GSX-R1000. So much grip, even when ringing out my SDR.

The only downsides are the speed wobbles (due to the high aspect ratio and the SDR’s chassis / steep rake) and the tread life. I am replacing my rear tire (front is still good) at only 1,200 miles, as I am at the wear bars.

And the first 620 miles were RPM / power mode restricted. Some of the speed wobbles can be mitigated by reducing tire pressures to around 32 psi. But there’s one place that these tires are rock-solid, and that’s while leaned over.

My SDR is more solid at 140 mph while cranked over than my ZX-14R was at 100 mph. Of course, superior suspension helps too. They also warm up very quickly. This bike INHALES rear tires like no other bike I’ve owned.

So if you want something for sport touring, look elsewhere. These are for intense, fast paced sport riding. At least the wear was completely even over the entire carcass. Luckily, Moto-Mummy price matched and got it here in 2 days.

From worn tires to new tires is a noticeable improvement but no all season tire can compare in the snow. I was skeptical but with the first heavy snowfall I was blown away. Accelerating and braking maintained traction yet the turning ability on snow was the most impressive.

In a fwd car that is very prone to understeer, I turned into a packed snow parking lot that would always result in sliding straight forward with the wheels turned unless I slowed to a snails pace. Two days later in the same parking lot with the new Blizzak WS80, I turned in expecting a little slide but there was none.

I turned in again, off the pavement onto hard-packed snow, faster than I should trying to make it slide but it still followed its line. Trying to push it farther I grabbed the e-brake. With the old tires a quick grab and release of the e-brake would slide completely sideways and steering fully into it with gas was just enough to follow it back to straight.

With these tires the same grab and release of the e-brake was almost unnoticeable. Holding the e-brake while turning barely slid but was completely manageable. In conclusion. If you like drifting in the winter put a set of these on the front and keep your old tires on the rear.

If you want the best acceleration, braking, and most stable turning in the winter get a set of 4.

Best studded tires! If you don’t drive on ice/snow roads a lot, mostly on pavement, they will wear faster than other brands. If you are on snow covered roads all season, these are the best.

I bought this tires(two) for only one reason: to safety drive for Christmas Holidays to Michigan to my daughter. In Michigan Nissan dealership informed me that metal studded tires are prohibited by Law and I can face a big fine(more then $1,000) They also presented me with an extract from document from tirebuyer.

com, certifying that metals studs are prohibited in most of the states. I would never have bought them if the seller(Walmart) informed me ahead in his on-line web page. Today I returned them to Walmart store and I hope they will be refund me the full amount of the tires.

Bought these for my Toyota Tacoma. I commute 140 kms round trip every day from a small town in Ontario to a larger city in the GTA. Everyday I felt confident that no-matter-what the elements would throw at me these tires would do the job and get me through.

Installed, with tire pressure sensors, steelies, these were not cheap – but then how much do you value your safety? I have a friend who has put two words together and came up with Gription. These tires have it.

Great winter tire, good traction and little road noise. Keep in mind that you are starting with 10/32” tread where most others are 12/32” to 13/32” (265/65/R17). These tires will wear more quickly. Also, make sure your wheel alignment is within specifications before putting these tires on your vehicle.

My alignment was off slightly and I only got 20,000 Kms out of them.

I have been a big believer in Winter Specific tires for a long time after living above 9,000′ elevation in CO for 7+ years. For the past few years I have been keeping a AT with Three Peak symbol as a lower mileage, winter set to keep them as fresh as possible for winter driving.

This year I finally moved that set (Toyo AT2 @15,000 miles) over to my summer set, and upgraded to these Cooper M+S studded tires. Toyos did ‘fine’ for the first 12K as long as it wasn’t too icy and the snow didn’t get too deep.

However, there is no comparison to the confidence you get from a true winter tire like these coopers. Had just put a set on my wife’s car and loved them, so I decided the sale on the Load E Coopers was too good to pass up.

Very pleased with the purchase. Have driven in some of the iciest conditions my truck has seen yet, (passing several vehicles that lost control on high elevation mountain pass) and these tires performed flawlessly.

Climbing Steep Snowpacked road to our house required 4×4 with the Toyos (AT) and the Firestone (AT) Also, ride quality and balance was better than I had expected. The only ‘cons’ about these are that you should expect them to wear fast if you run them all year round and in warmer temps, and that you should keep an eye on the Sipe’s packing with small gravel that may affect the life and performance of the tire.

Neither of these bother me at all, since I specifically purchased the tires to run for 3-4 months a year, to insure safe driving & Towing in the harshest conditions. #sweepstakes.

I bought my third set of these early in 2019. I wrote a review of these back in 2010 and gave them 5 stars, and now I’m giving them 4 stars. I still feel these are very good tires but the design is getting dated and there are newer designs with a bit better traction out there as well.

When they’re worn to about half or more they are not as good in deep snow, which stands to reason. But even when they’re worn they’re still good on slippery surfaces like ice, and slushy roads, except from a dead stop.

It’s easy to spin them with a little throttle application from a standstill but once you’re moving they’re fine. Keep in mind I own a half ton pickup with no weight in the back. You will notice a drop in gas mileage with them but I suppose you do with most winter tires with large lugs like these.

Tires with tight block patterns are usually better on wet and icy roads but not as good in deep snow. If you live in an area with lots of deep snow, like Norther NB, Quebec etc you will love these tires.

If you live in area that doesn’t get a lot of deep snow and a mix of rain and cold weather like some parts of NS and BC you probably wouldn’t need such an aggressive snow tire.

I really like Cooper tires in general. Excellent tires, great value. I put these on a 2018 F-150 275 65 18 and did not get them studded. The tires were very good in deep snow/slush/moderate soft pack snow.

However any surface that was close to hard pack snow or ice for sure they performed poorly – no better than the All Terrain tires I took for winter. They were also very loud tires and took a fair amount of weight to balance.

The previous winter I had the studless Yokohama Iceguard and they were significantly better overall in all aspects including noise and comfort. My two bits are either get these with studs or look for a good set of studless tires for winter.

While the light truck has surprisingly limited choices in 16 inch rim size versus larger sizes, the reliability under loading and front to back treadwear is a greater concern due to it’s larger rolling resistance.

So, when I chose to buy snow tires as a pair to replace the front steering tire set, I wanted a good deep tread and strong sidewalls to avoid that really mushy almost folding inward feel at the wheel.

Even more, tire experts say putting a new set of any tires on the front give a greater thread depth in front and can result in spin around behavior because of the dynamics of misalignment of the steer wheels with skid direction, an action that may be unavoidable as an impact dodge input.

These have 3 or 4 more 32nd of an inch tread than most other snow tires to consider. The reason is that light truck drivers can pay for a new set of tires for what it costs to change all four tires every spring and fall.

In fact, my tire change service man says to expect 25,000 miles before wear-out if the new soft nano rubbers with high grip designs are used. Because the back set were another brand and more long wearing type of tire, I really wanted these as steering control tires, so that’s where I put them.

I had already broken convention by have a different brand and model and treadon steering than on back anyway. But pulling trailers a lot with up to 1000 pounds in the back hatch area of the truck absolutely mandates that kind of tire, especially pulling heavy equipment trailers and having any risk at all of fishtailing under loads.

While the 10 ply rating on these is a big sense of secure feeling, Im not sure I want them in back. Very rarely you feel the sidewall give at the wheel, but since they really are much quieter, you have to expect that I think.

Noise from rear wheels goes pretty much behind and gone anyway IMO. They do go over glare ice with almost no skidding, although nothing can do that if speed is not under 10mph or attack angle is too high or vehicle weight is too low.

Just looking at the big lobes at the edge tells a lot. Very good for skid control or avoiding getting a control loss turn into an actual side skid. Not so good for actually driving OVER snow cover or pack snow which lifts it off the surface more than narrow tires do.

If you keep a full tank of gas and have a larger engine and compensate with lower speed on snow covered surfaces, this tire is probably as good a tire as will be engineered without studs protruding from the tread blocks.

These are great winter tires. I have been in snow as high as the truck’s bumper and these tires still had traction. They also ride well on pavement.

These tires are truly awesome, I know, the grand canyon is awesome, however these tires truly are the best of the best. Great traction wet or ice or snow. Will buy again if they last.

So far these tires perform tremendously in the snow and slush. Only had them a month so we’ll see how the rest of the winter goes, but I have no doubt they will work perfectly for my needs.

Great except the black nut covers I got were too small for my vehicle. Would still order from them again any day – but will order extras elsewhere 😉

I really like the traction these provide in the snow. I usually get them studded, but am going to try this set without them. The LT sizes are getting hard to find around here, so I went on-line and found them several places.

Surprisingly Wal-Mart was the least expensive. The only dissapointment was with Fed-Ex. They just left them on my sidewalk about 4 feet from the portch! I was surprised they didn’t get stolen!!!!.

I had these tires on my ’95 Cougar and they were awesome I loved driving that rear wheel drive care in the snow. I just bought this set for my wife’s RWD Crown Vic. Hankook discontinued the exact size 225 60 R 16 for that car so I bought the next size up 225 70 R 16.

When changing tire sizes you have to do all 4 due to ABS / Traction control so you cannot upsize just the rears like I used to do decades ago. But Walmart wouldn’t mount them for me because they didn’t match the size listed on the door.

I checked clearances prior to ordering and knew there would be no issues. Soooo I had to take the car home put it on jack stands pull all the wheels off and truck them down to walmart where they mounted and balanced them as carry outs then I put them back on the car.

Kind of a hassle but these tires are worth it in the snow, although I run them all year long as we don’t put that many miles on that car. BTW no clearance, traction control or ABS issues were encountered.

But the speedometer is slow by about 2. 5%.

I drive 10,000 Km per month through all weather conditions over every road type imaginable, so I was looking specifically for a tire to handle icy conditions, as that is the most dangerous in my travels.

I put these on a Chevrolet Express 2500, and they were absolutely fantastic in every road condition but ice. In fact, these were about the worse tires imaginable in freezing rain and on hard pack icy snow conditions.

However, absolutely the best rain tire I have ever used. They handle deep snow well. I found they gripped slush almost too well and I really had to grip the steering wheel. I was able to get 100,000 Km with a tire rotation every month (10,000 Km) over a straight 11 month period.

I only suffered 2 nail punctures, they are tough tires.

By far the best snow tire at best price. Police sheriffs I know use these tires on squads. I have owned every snow tire manufacturer from Firestone to Michelins this tire is quieter smoother ride and wears better.

AS long as you mount them as late as you can and remove them early you will get more then one season. Make sure your alignment is good. Bad alignment is the # 2 reason you would destroy these. #1 is driving these in super hot days.

I’ve owned Blizzaks since the WS-60 (2012 or so). While the different generations have their advantages, they are all great snow tires. These were a great deal. Bought 2 sets. Mounted and awaiting winter.

Although these are LT tires (275/60R20) 8 Ply they win in being the heaviest tire @57lbs each. The Positive @ 50K Miles on tires Great snow traction Decent Dry Road Traction Wet Road is ok could sketchy at times it has declined as tire wears Hydro plane Resistance – Adequate at this mileage Braking is good Great Wear Ability at 50K I’m just half life.

Only 1 puncture whereas previous tires Yokohama Geolander GA015 and Good Year SRA’s each had (3) at this mile mark as well as being needed to be changed. Has really good offroad traction, which I rarely I drive.

Handles well when heavily loaded Negatives: Stock Size tire my mpg’s dropped about 1-1. 5mpg. Some wheel shake at around 65, as well as an unevenness at this speed, truck has 150K on it which may be due to suspension parts.

Moreover, the ride has a more truck like feel because the tires are so heavy vs 45 or 50lb tire. *The best analogy I can make with these tires, you are exchanging a pair of sneakers for solid pair of hiking boots.

You are exchanging mpg or durabilty, dry road & wet road for offroad and Snow & ice.

I’ll start by admitting my folly. I ordered five of these near the end of getting my 1988 RAM 50 running again. After receiving them and having them mounted and balanced (stock wheels and yes they clear nicely,) I had a delay before finishing and driving the truck.

This time delay went past the warranty for defective parts. A few months later the truck was finally running and the tire shop didn’t mention the issue of the tires not being centered at the time they put them on.

After driving on them, the truck wobbles on these tires. Because I waited, I’m stuck with these poorly made tires where I only have 2 tires good out of 5. Now to describe the tire. I love them! (Yes, I’ve been driving on them trying to get some value before getting rid of them.

I bought these for my chevy cruze and they are the worst snow tires I’ve ever purchased. The traction in snow/ice isn’t good. The tire roll is terrible (car is all over the road like the sidewall has no integrity at all) They make steering the car and cornering not fun at all.
