I really like this product, do not let the picture fool you, although it looks very pours, in fact it is very smooth inside. That way items that you are grinding down will not be hard to remove. The mortar is a nice weight to it and makes for easy grinding of food ingredients.

I would definitely recommend this to family and friends, and a great gift for your person who makes salsas.

I like this product. The size is perfect – not too small not too big. It is heavy but that is expected. The bottom part (the feet) pictured below – I don’t know if it should be that way. Two of the feet (2nd picture) have that round thing in the middle (1st picture).

The 3rd feet (3rd picture) doesn’t have that round thing and it seems that it was not carved correctly. So when the molcajete is upright there’s a gap (5th picture). If this is the way it should be, then the product is good.

But, if the Molcajete should not be this way, then I got a defective product. The included Avocado Peeler/Slicer seems like it is made of good quality.

Its a very nice mortar and pestlewell made and attractive. Its not so heavy that you would break your wrist trying to lift it and wash it. Its substantial enough to grind stuff without moving around.

The pestle shape fits naturally in your hand for good leverage. I am happy with this purchase.

I didn’t think I would like this little thing, but here I am on the verge of ordering a second one. Aesthetically, it matches my granite countertop and granite cutting board but that’s a personal preference.

For functionality, i love the longer pestle and deep bowl. It serves my purpose of smashing a few garlic gloves or chile pepper. No need to get my big granite one for such a small task. The item however didn’t come with instructions on whether it needed to be cured but however it does say it’s unpolished for a rough grinding surface.

Using my experience And judgement I decide to grind some rice to rid of any gray granite powder which I did find even after I rinsed the item off. Will repeat the process until no residue is left and use my new kitchen tool ASAP.

Exactly what I was looking for. Thought of a project that I needed one of these for, did a quick google search, target had multiple for same day pickup, I drove to the store, and walked out with exactly what I needed for less than $20.

Though this isn’t going to be used for food but rather grinding of periodic elements like charcoal and other substances that can break down to fine powders, it will do exactly what I need it to. Great quality.

Real stone. Heavy. Very thick walls. Could fit a baseball in it just about perfectly. Looks cool. No complaints. After all, it’s a bowl and thick stick made from stone. How bad could it be? Haha.

I have purchased this for myself and as gifts for others. It is nice and solid while being fairly easy to store. The only downside is it is a bit small and can’t make large quantities of things like pesto or chile pastes.

I can hardly believe how easy it is to grind my own spices with this perfect mortar & pestle. I find it exactly the right depth for pounding or grinding seeds, spices and nuts without bits flying out.

Excellent texture inside for “holding” the seeds while you grind them. Nice and heavy, the shaping on the outside of the bowl makes it easy to hold, and the wide flat end and smooth rounded end give good options for different types of grinding.

Gorgeous solid black stone, it looks beautiful as well as being amazing to use.

It is one of the best tools I’ve ever used, I’m from Spain. Since I bought it I use it constantly. My version is the biggest one, because I am a big man and it is not heavy for me, but perhaps other people prefer the small size.

In addition to useful and very powerful when I cook diferent meals is very stable, for me everything is advantages. Just a question. I saw that some of these granite mortars need healing, that healing is crushing rice to powder or something similar, is it necessary with this piece? I didn’t do it and that worries me.

I absolutely love this mortar and pestle set. For one it looks amazing in the kitchen, really great quality, I can see this lasting for years and it crushes and grinds perfectly. I don’t have to over work my hand or shoulder to get it to a powdery consistency, plus a lot can fit in the mortar and it’s really easy to clean.

It is quite heavy so I usually don’t move it from the counter but overall this set does the job.

This mortar and pestle works great for grinding spices and herbs. One feature I like about it is that it has this circular groove carved at the bottom that helps hold tough ingredients (like peppercorns) in place when mashing.

Great product, great price! I have a small home apothecary as well as rescuing dogs and several of them require medication/supplements, but are great at finding it and hiding it, so this little life saver comes in handy and allows me to quickly grind up their medication/supplements so that it can easily be added to their food without detection.

This is the first mortar and pestle I have purchased. I did not want to spend a lot, so I looked around to find one that was a good value for the price. I was pleasantly surprised when I received it! It is very high quality, very heavy.

The inside of the mortar is ridged to help with griding. The end of the pestle is not a high gloss finish as the rest, which also aids in griding. While I originally intended to get one that would “get me buy for a while” until I decided to purchase a higher quality one, I now do not have to worry about that! This is quite a heavy/sturdy/stable well made piece of genuine marble for it’s size, that will withstand just about anything you can fit into it’s small space for grinding. The inside diameter is approx.

three medium sized fingers straight across, so it’s roomy enough to grind spices, seeds, nuts, pills/tablets etc comfortably. If you want a quieter experience go for one that’s larger, as the pestle tends to clang against the inside rim/sides despite handling with care.

I bought this actually because of my memory of having one as a child in my mothers kitchen when i saw this one i was a little bit worried about it, but decided to risk it, after all my mother has had hers for going on thirty years now.

It came in 3 days earlier then i was expecting, and when i opened it i found that non of the pictures did it justice. it was a hundred times more beautiful then any of the pictures. i used it just a little bit ago and it ground some Coriander with little dificulty, over all i am very pleased with it.

it looks to be of the highest qulity, i am highly satisfied, their are no obious flaws in the marble and it is well polished. the only thing that was unexpected was to find that as is proper with a morter and pestle the inside of the bowl and top of the pestle was not polished, this helps to grind the herbs, i am very pleased with this purchase.

This is a really good, durable mortar & pestle. Molcajete Mortar & Pestle do not always come pre-seasoned. In that case, you have to do it yourself. This one does not appear to be preseasoned. 1. Use a nylon brush or dish scrubber and plain water – NEVER use soap, the porous rock will soak it right up & flavor your food forevs.

Scrub off the loose dirt and grit really well, like longer than you think you should have to. 2. Put a small amount of cheapie white rice in the bottom, basically a single layer. Add about a tablespoon of water.

3. Stabilize the mortar with one hand, use the other to grip the pestle and crush the rice in a circular motion, working from the center outward and up the sides. YouTube is really helpful for technique.

4. When the rice has been ground to paste (most likely a grey, dingy shade), thoroughly rinse/scrub the whole thing with plain water and start over with step two. 5. Repeat until rice paste remains white – now your mortar is cleaned and seasoned.

This is made from solid marble and looks great on my countertop, but the large pestle doesn’t grind well. I’ve had better luck with a smaller, pharmacy style pestle that you can really beat the seeds with.

Perhaps it’s also the smoothness of the mortar and pestle. Cumin and fennel seeds just won’t grind well in this.

This gray marble mortar and pestle is so good looking. Seems awesome for the price. Don’t hesitate to order. Box it comes in doesn’t look very rich, but take it out and you’ll be very happy and surprised.

I bought this and it’s nice quality, but unfortunately arrived with a big chip out of it. Zulily doesn’t keep stock around so maybe I can get one next time I see it. Zulily gave me a credit and a discount on future purchases.

Wonderful! Love the design. I ordered this online & got delivery via a third party courier service. The pestle unfortunately came broken in half due to bad handling by the courier service. I managed to fix it with an epoxy adhesive.

Solid product and you can’t go wrong with the price. The colour of the grey is slightly different than the picture. It has an industrial look vs a solid colour.

Great product, does exactly what you would expect with the bonus of having two sizes in both the mortar and pestle. Good price and good quality materials. Only critique is that it is a bit larger than I would like and not the prettiest looking item.

This beautiful molcajete immediately caught my eye upon receiving Masienda’s email. And ordering from Masienda we knew we would receive a carefully sourced and authentic item. Upon arrival I cured it a couple of times with white rice, adding a round of rice with water which made it easier to go all the way up the sides of the molcajete.

We have since made salsa roja, salsa verde, and guacamole. The size of the bowl is perfect and it’s a wonderful piece of equipment. Yes, it is indeed heavy. When not in use it’s sitting on a little buffet cabinet and almost looks more like a piece of art than a utensil.

I am beyond happy with my molcajete. This is a true beauty in form and function. I resisted buying a molcajete until I could find one that appealed to me aesthetically. This was the one I was waiting for! I’m so glad I waited.

Also, a big shout out to customer service. I received one of these handmade beauties which had a large hole in the bowl. I expect some imperfections but this was too big to ignore. When I contacted customer service about an exchange they were not only prompt, but they were also kind and saw that the imperfection was too large to ignore.

They quickly sent me a new one and a label to send the other one back. I think we can all agree that great customer service makes the difference in repeat buying.

My Mortar and Pestle arrived damaged but Sur La Table sent a replacement within days. It is a beautiful piece of functional art and I just love it! I use mine to grind my dried herbs but I could see many other uses.

The grain of the marble is so lovely and it is so heavy and sturdy but easy to work with and to clean. It looks more expensive than it is. a great value and wise purchase.

Great size: not huge but large enough to accommodate an ample amount of pesto and other sauces, as well as the blending/mashing of smaller quantities of spices, nuts, garlic, etc. Very sturdy: quite heavy, but not unwieldy.

The pestle fits very comfortably in the hand, making it very easy to work with your ingredients. And the marble is gorgeous!.

I bought this on a whim and was concerned I wouldn’t get much use about it. Instead, I used it about 5 times in the first week – mashing onion+lime for a guacamole (then again to mix with fresh tomatoes for a salsa), grinding ginger and garlic for a curry, then pounding garlic to mix with butter for garlic bread.

Crushing food releases the flavours and aromas in a completely new way than dicing, I’ve been really impressed with the results. The mortar and pestle is also great quality. I was concerned it would need to be “seasoned” as the internet suggested, but right out of the box, there was no granite dust and the guacamole we mashed in it was 100% grit free.

It’s been really easy to clean to. This impulse purchase has been one of the best additions to my kitchen!.

I wouldn’t normally buy a celebrity chef’s retail lines but this is visually discreet. It’s also satisfyingly weighty and has made some minor transformations to my cooking. I don’t think I’ll be able to use pre-ground cardamom seeds ever again.

Very pleased with size and weight. Best of all, it appears to have been seasoned properly beforehand – no bits of grit appearing in the rice I’ve just ground up which you normally need to do before using one of this type of pestle.

If you’re looking for a nice mortar and pestle at a reasonable price, this is a good option. I kive in the Dallas Texas metroplex and went to two BB& B stores looking for a mortar and pestle but to no avail, so I started looking online and found the perfect set for my kitchen, and at a fair price (including shipping ).

Far more variety online than in the stores anyway, and convenient. I use this set to grind up pills for my pet as a mix-in for his food, and it works great. The pills don’t try to slip around in the mortar, thanks to the rough interior.

I’ll also use it to gring up spices :).

I wish to thank QVC and Le Creuset for offering the colorful and functional pieces of cookware that even in the “food world” have no peer. My father gave me my first piece, a Dutch oven, in Marseille, over forty years ago.

Arrived VERY promptly thankfully via FedEx, not USPS which is why it also arrive in PERFECT condition! The colours of both, the mortar and pestle are an appealing match. It’s sturdy. I tested it by grinding dried, split peas, and it worked very well.

The only reason I hold-back on 1 star is because there’s the slightest “brown” tint in the stone. But that’s Nature. It certainly has nothing to do with the utility of the item. Otherwise, I couldn’t be happier.

This item is ok. Way larger and heavier than expected.(I have a small space,small hands) color is perfect. Not something you would hold to use. If bigger is better for you, this is your item!

One of my best purchases during the pandemic. I wanted to try new recipes and some referenced a mortar and pestle. Now it’s my go-to for a lot of things instead of using my KitchenAid food chopper. There is just something so satisfying about the pounding and grinding and seeing the results.

When the Pestle of my previous (non-Emile Henry and smaller) M&P broke in half I decided to replace it with a known quality item. What a joy! This one smoothly, and easily, pulverized the spice leaves into the “dust” I desired, and the pulverized spice completely brushed out of the Mortar.

My spice was completely dry. Because of the quality of the materials used in making this Mortar & Pestle, I can’t imagine that any damp/moist/wet item being smooshed wouldn’t wash out completely. Although I was a bit concerned because of the larger size (compared to my previous one), that concern has vanished.

I’m absolutely Thrilled with this one, including its size! Makes me wonder why I didn’t replace the old one sooner.

I have not yet used my new Emile Henry mortar and pestle but I can tell you right now that in just handling this item, it is sturdier, quite substantial in size and more stable than any previously used.

Will supplement this initial review after I have had the opportunity to give it a good spin. Bonne Annee 2019!.

High quality, durable, and gets the job done. Exactly what you hope for when buying a mortar and pestle

This mortar and pestle set is amazing. Large, solid and stable, it will crush anything you throw into it. Made of one piece of granite, it takes care of even the toughest jobs with ease. The mortar exterior comes unfinished however, so it really produces that organic and earthy appearance for your kitchen.

Seriously, it’s an impressive looking piece that my guests always comment on. Since it is 8″, it’s very easy to crush seeds, nuts, etc, without spilling – I would always recommend getting the largest size you can handle.

The bottom of the granite is also unfinished, so I make sure to keep it on top of a rattan coaster so it doesn’t scratch up my countertops.

This is a quality, inexpensive M&P set made in China from granite. The M&P does a great job smooshing, grinding, and pounding whatever plant or animal matter is needed by recipe. The granite is beautiful, sturdy, and weighs 14 pounds (I used the bathroom scale to weigh it).

And I’ve been reading a book on Mortar & Pestle. Did you know, according to ancient Chines lore, the Yellow Emperor of China (around 2690 BC) invented the M&P? There are M&P artifacts from Native American archeological sites.

At first look its well built nice finish and the correct size for most applications. don’t recommend attempting to fit 4 cups of anything in it. its 5 inch wide and 4. 5 inch deep so too many ingredients would make it hard to use.

lastly the inside is not very good there are divots in the bottom which are about an 1/8 of an inch deep. that makes it difficult to grind the ingredients to the same texture. i have another one almost identical but about $10 more expensive which has a much nicer finish on the inside very even in texture no divots which makes for uniform grinding.

hope you do better than I did.

It’s a heavy weight item, doesn’t move much when in use, and the felt base helps protect your worksurface. The unpolished interior is also helpful in grinding up spices or whatever. However, the pestle is just too short for my normal-sized hand.

I can’t imagine it being comfortable for anyone to use unless they have extremely small hands. Fully inserted, it sticks out only 7. 0 cm. This is slightly less than the width of my four fingers, and when using the pestle I find that I’m holding it with only the bottom 3 fingers around it.

It’s quite frustrating to use for any amount of time.

Purchased as a gift so I have not used but it looks very good quality and I am sure it will be very useful. Excellent service from Harts of Stur, second time I have made an online purchase from this Company and am extremely impressed with them.
