20 Best Low Sodium Pasta Sauce (2023 Updated)

I realize that there are people who, for whatever reason, be it health, or some fad diet, avoid all carbs. I suppose this is for you. If bland, acidic, bitter, nearly flavorless sauce is your game. Bingo.

On a side note- pasta sauce is something so basic, anyone could make their own, with minimal effort, so I cannot understand the plethora of pasta sauce brands constantly popping up, but I digress. Had I paid closer attention, I would have avoided this brand from the start.

If it is paleo, keto, gluten free, or any other fad, I avoid it at all cost. I missed the fact that this is a keto friendly product. It’s basically cooked tomatoes in a jar. Supposedly, there is onion, basil, and olive oil in the recipe.

It tastes like very sour, bitter cooked tomatoes. That’s it. Yum. As someone who can cook, and quite well, I can tell you that with the right variety of tomatoes, cooked properly, the natural sweetness comes through without the need to add any sugar.

Obviously, they are not using good tomatoes here. This is one of the worst pasta sauces I’ve ever tasted. To make this edible, I had to add, roasted garlic, onion, olive oil, basil, butter, salt, pepper, red chili flakes, and a small amount of sugar to offset the bitter taste.

Honestly I have been buying this sauce for years and continue to be impressed. I started buying it because other sauces like ragu and Prego had a lot of added sugar, salt, preservatives, etc. I could not figure out why my skin would have a reaction and break out if u ate too much spaghetti, and now I know it is because of those other sauce brands.

I have no problems with skin breakouts with yo mamas. I will say that the sauce is like a clean sheet when you get it. I like that because it is so basic and clean, I can doctor it up with spices and herbs and toppings that I like.

I usually add basil, oregano, onion powder, salt, garlic powder, a bit of hot sauce, parmesan cheese, and some honey to my sauce and let it slow simmer before adding it to my pasta. I think this sauce would be difficult to eat without doctoring it up.

But I like that I can add my preferred amount of salt/honey instead of the other sauce brands that add salt/sugar in large quantities.

Flavor was nothing special. I’ve tried making low sodium sauce myself. I’ve purchased low sodium plain tomato sauce, chopped my own onions, added bell pepper, garlic powder and spent a lot of time. It was about the same as this – not too exciting and a lot more work.

Low sodium is low sodium and it will take time to make the transition. In the meantime, I’ve chopped up onions and bell pepper to add a bit more “oomph” to Yo Mama’s sauce. Bottom line: it’s about the same flavor as what I can make and it takes less time.

Adding onions and a bit of water to thin it helps. (also a tiny bit of Truvia, right before serving individual portion, and red pepper flakes if you want a bit of heat. ).

Francesco Rinaldi is a wonderful sauce and my son is obsessed with it. The stores in Florida don’t sell Francesco Rinaldi but I found it on the Walmart website so I thought I was saved!!!! Not so Walmart did a horrible job packing the product, the bottles opened up during transport.

I received a huge flimsy box with 12 bottles that were not secured so they rolled around the box during travel until they opened up, what a mess! Good thing Walmart took it back no problem but I really wanted those bottles.

Walmart needs to do a better job in packing their boxes so the products don’t arrive damaged. Why isn’t Francesco Rinaldi sold in Florida Walmart? The sauce gets 5 stars but Walmart delivery actually gets no stars.

This pasta sauce tastes great. I did notice the lack of salt, of course, but like with all no-salt-added foods, you get used to it. One word of warning though: Once opened, it’s good for only 5 DAYS before it starts going bad! If you use a whole jar to make a big batch of spaghetti or something, it’s no problem, but I only use a serving at a time, to add some sauce to my low-sodium pasta meals that a very dry.

It works great, and the meals taste much better with the added sauce, but that means don’t even quite use half a bottle in a week. By the time I go to use it the following week, it has usually gone obviously bad.

I have sometimes had it last an extra day or two past the 5 day limit, but no longer than that. Every bottle I’ve used has gone rancid before I could use it all. I’m hoping that dividing the jar up into one-serving containers and freezing it will work, but I haven’t tried it yet.

Either way, if you can use it all quickly (and/or freeze it, if it turns out that works), then this is an excellent sauce, and I highly recommend it. If not, then be prepared to waste at least half of each bottle, when it goes bad.

This is the best pasta sauce ever!! It is clean, delicious, no added sugar and considered one of the best for you. I’m afraid it’s been discontinued. I’ve been using this for years. I guess my search will be on for a replacement.

This is the only sauce I buy now not only does it have a very low sugar content unlike other pasta sauces/spaghetti sauce. I love that it’s made with San marzano tomatoes, which was actually the reason I bought this in the first place.

The taste is amazing it is the best I buy two jars at a time at least to make sure I don’t run out.

Has a noticeable amount of oregano in it as per much of the Northeastern Italian American sauce. Didn’t care for that aspect. I often have to thicken other jarred sauces with a little tomato paste, but not this stuff.

Excellent for oregano lovers.

Very light seasoning if any, Very mild, I bought the low salt version and it looks like crushed tomatoes coming out of the jar, instead of that thick stuff you get from other Spaghetti sauces. I would recommend this.

Wow! Great FRESH Tomato flavors and a bit of spicy too!, It’s great, I’ve spent a lot of money trying them all! This one is 1st place for fresh tomato taste and just the right amount of spicy. I also like Rao’s, Lucini and Botticelli! Real Italian tomatoes!.

For a store bought jar of sauce I find the flavor of this brand unparalleled! I remember first trying it and thinking ‘I can’t believe I’ve been buying other brands for so long with something that taste like this on the shelves.

‘ The first thing you’ll notice is how much REDDER the color of this sauce is! It looks much closer to a fresh shade of tomato red. The consistency is also perfect; not too chunky, but not without texture.

Think of the refrigerated version of restaurant salsa you get from the store vs. the lukewarm jar of Tostitos you get in the chip aisle 😡 That is the perfect comparison of this sauce to the other brands.

My new 2nd favorite marinara …second only to homemade. Love the pomodoro I am bummed I waited this long to stumble upon this gem. I envision many more jars on my future.

I tried this sauce recently! I tried one flavor with some ravioli, then another flavor for spaghetti! I really loved it, on both! So, I’ll definitely be buying again next time. The only thing that sucks is that it is spendy, so when I’m on a budget unfortunately, it’s not always reasonable to spend so much on sauce.

However, when I’ve got a little more to spend, it’s definitely the way to go! You can really taste the difference in the ingredients and flavors compared to the cheaper sauces. Super yummy!.

I love that the sauce is organic, non GMO, and has a simple ingredient list that is not a mile long. I usually sautee chopped onions, garlic, jalapenos, fresh chopped basil, parsley, and cilantro. I add a splash of white wine and let that evaporate.

Only then, I add a pasta sauce and heat everything up, bringing it to a simmer. In this case, I could still taste the acidity of the tomato sauce. If one loves acidic taste, this is a perfect 5 star sauce.

If one prefers more sweeter, less acidic taste, I would go with a sauce made from San Marzano tomatoes. I personally prefer the notes of garlic and other spices in the sauce, having the tomato sauce absorb those flavors, highlighting them.

It’s harder for an acidic sauce to do all that.

For years I’d been trying jarred marinara, looking for the perfect sauce. I even tried ridiculously expensive, high-end artisanal sauces without much luck. I wanted with all fresh ingredients, imported Italian tomatoes, Italian olive oil, and no sugar or water – as I’d make it.

Then I finally tried Victoria a few years ago, and it wowed me. The sauce is nicely balanced, and you can’t beat the flavor. Maybe once a year I’ll try some new sauce just to see if it’s on par. It’s always a one-and-done with any new sauce.

Victoria, in my opinion, is simply the best.

Whatever tomatoes they’re putting in here sure do the job, robustly flavored and with a rich natural sweetness. This stuff could easily function as a decent tomato soup right out of the jar. For me though I could have used some more basil, maybe a stronger onion profile.

If these sound like complaints you would never make this is probably your perfect sauce.

I use many of the rice and beans recipes off of the Goya bean cans. Many of those recipes include as an ingredient. The 8 ounce can is perfect if you double the recipe on the 15 ounce can of beans. This sauce is different than regular tomato sauce.

It has some extra ingredients that make the rice and beans taste extra delicious. I highly recommend the sauce and the recipes.

I love the taste of this sauce. The seasonings and sea salt are blended so well. The flavor it gives my food is wonderful not to spicy with just the right amount of a touch of zing.

I buy this tomato sauce all the time, in fact this Goya tomato sauce is my first grab when I need it. It is packed with delicious flavor. I highly recommend this.

I wanted to know the difference between Rao’s Tomato & Basil and Marinara sauces, so I found out and will share the info here. The ingredients are the same, but the ratios are different. In this one, there is more basil, less oil, fewer calories (80 vs 100 per serving–which is significant), and the sauce is smoother (Marinara is unexpectedly SLIGHTLY ‘chunkier’).

In other words, the “Tomato” part of “Tomato Basil” seems spurious; there are no ‘chunks’ of tomatos in Tomato Basil. And both HAVE basil, Tomato Basil just has more. You can visually see this, comparing two jars.

So, they should change the name from “Tomato Basil” to “Extra Basil” in my mind, lol. And yes, you could add extra basil yourself. Also, I noticed visually that the Marinara had more onion, even though the two list them at the same place on the ingredients list.

Side-by-side, I can actually visually see the Marinara oil globs in the jar, while I don’t see any oil globs for what I’ll call now the Extra Basil version. Deliberating on whether it’s worth the extra money (it’s already extremely expensive), my partner and I are considering the extra money might be worth it just to have fewer fat calories (pay more to get less, in a way).

My partner hypothesized that they don’t need to add as much fat to get a good flavor in the Basil version, due to the extra herb. It’s logical, but I don’t know. All I know is I didn’t miss the oil in the Basil.

Tasting both blind (I’ve tried both versions in 2 days, so it’s fresh in my mind), I would have actually said the Extra Basil has more fat, just by the flavor and texture. Taste- and texture-wise, the Extra Basil version tastes to me more like a pizza sauce (I love pizza sauce).

Though you could use the Marinara as pizza sauce too. I’ve tried many bespoke pizza sauces that didn’t taste as much what I think of as ‘pizza sauce’ as the Basil. When you open the jar, it smells like ‘a good pizzeria’.

I’ve never had a pasta sauce I could just eat with a spoon, until now. I joked with a friend: “I can just skip the pasta!” Rao’s does make a pizza sauce, and I either haven’t tried it yet, or I can’t remember when I did (I think I’ve tried every pizza sauce sold here).

Rao’s pizza sauce has tweaked ingredients (adds carrots and cherry tomatos, probably for sweetness and tartness). But I’d venture to guess the biggest difference is the size of the jar, as you supposedly need less sauce to make a pizza (not in my book).

I’d have zero hesitation to use the Extra Basil version instead, especially if I were needing more than 1 jar of regular pizza sauce (and it would actually save money). While I’m at it: Cento is the budget leader in pizza sauce, Rao’s is the quality leader (in my book).

Cento, while very good for canned sauce, and while having the exact same ingredients, to my memory is less flavorful, seems ‘waterier’, and more like a straight tomato sauce. Rao’s is just something different.

I’ve also found opened Rao’s to stay good in the fridge for a long time, something you can’t do with cans. Speaking of ingredients, Rao’s uses real olive oil, and doesn’t add sugar. Actually so does Cento.

Both Marinara and ‘Extra Basil’ are incredible sauces–either is by far better than anything prefab I’ve ever had. In fact, that’s true of all Rao’s tomato sauces, although the variations are less-obvious.

For instance, I just shrugged at the ‘Vodka’ version, and its extra cost (“tasted like Rao’s”). The Arrabbiata version seems to be just “Rao’s” with red pepper flake, for heat. Although with Tomato Basil, the differences go a bit beyond the extra basil.

If you’re balking at the price, try 1 jar of either. If you want a sauce more like fresh stewed tomatos made on your stovetop, where tomatos are the star of the show, get the Marinara. If you want something SLIGHTLY ‘thicker’/smoother and a LITTLE more emphasis on spice (not heat), more like a pizza sauce or storebought pasta sauce, or you just want less fat, try the Marinara.

Can’t go wrong with either.

This is my typical to go so sauce when I don’t have time to make my own. I loved the flavor and trusted the brand and ingredients used. Yesterday I went and purchased 2 cans to use. When I opened them at home, some weird dried flaky stuff fell on my hands and all over my pasta.

When I looked closely it looked like dry worms or some type of small, dried up bugs. Dissapointed and slightly disgusted as this has never happened before. I always check my expiration dates and it looked good.

I usually trust this brand anyways. It was frustrating I had to throw away all my food. I went back to the store to report this. I initially asked if I could replace the bottles with 2 new ones instead of a refund so I went the aisle and when I grabbed a new can I noticed it also had dried up bugs on the lid and bottom.

There were at least 3 more bottles that looked the same. I checked their expiration date and it was for the year 2025 so it was odd they went bad. I decided to get a refund instead. Careful when purchasing and hopefully the sauces have all been checked and taken off the shelf.

A little discouraged after this experience to repurchase this brand. Thank you to target employees for the assistance.

Ordered ten jars of sauce. They were very well packaged. First each jar was wrapped in a plastic zip lock bag and then rolled many times over in padded packing. Then all were placed in a box. The packing must have cost more that the jar of sauce itself.

One did arrive broken but stayed intact in its packing. I reached out to Jet and they immediately issued a refund for the one broken jar. Excellent company with great pricing. Will be looking to them first for my my future purchases.

This is mine and my husband’s new favorite marinara. It is light and delicious. We had it tonight with meatballs and gnocchi. Yum.

If I can give a 0 star. I would. Because this sauce is an absolute monstrosity. It looks good from the outside but once you open it, it smells horrid. I decide to try it anyways because I thought mayyybe it won’t be as bad.

Biggest mistake. It was so gooey and lumpy I couldn’t even take it out of the jar. Once it got into the hot pan it wouldn’t even melt into a creamy sauce so I have to put a splash of water in it to loosen it up.

Don’t even get me started with the taste that I can’t even describe. It made my pasta and broccoli taste like sour milk. I was gagging. I was really excited about this sauce because most Alfredo sauces contains sherry wine and I can’t consume alcohol because I am a Muslim.

I think vegan “chefs” need to stop creating these “alfredo” sauces. My Sicilian ancestors are rolling in their graves because of this blob of abomination.

The flavor of the sauce was good after adding my own seasonings like basil, onion & garlic powder, & Cajun seasoning with a bit of fresh lemon juice. I tried to make it the way I would make my regular dairy Alfredo sauce, but the flavors were definitely much different.

It would’ve been fine because the flavors were still good, but when I opened the jar to pour some—emphasis on SOME—of the sauce into my pan, the entire jar plopped out. Like a can of slime. Super disgusting to look at.

I added some pasta water to thin it out which worked, but when it started cooling down as I was eating, the texture became gummy again. I think it may have to do with the tapioca thickener used since thats what they use in vegan gummy vitamins.

If they could figure out the right consistency then it’d be pretty good. Not worth 9$ though.

I bought the No-Dairy Alfredo sauce and cooked some penne and broccoli with it. I thought that it had a good consistency for a non-dairy product and I was impressed with it, but I did thin it a little bit with some milk so that it would incorporate better with the pasta itself.

I tried some of the sauce plain as well. It was delightfully creamy, with a strong lemon flavor and undertones of pepper, and it had a slightly cheesy flavor (likely from the combination of cashew and nutritional yeast).

I did think that it was a little too lemony, but figured that adding it to pasta would make it a more appropriate level of lemony. It was still delightfully creamy and the slightest bit cheesy with the pasta, but the flavor of the black pepper disappeared (which I was a little disappointed with and solved by cracking some black pepper over the top) and the lemon flavor was still a little too strong, even with the pasta and broccoli.

Overall, this was a delightful no-dairy alternative and I would buy it again for a special occasion. I prefer no-dairy alfredo to regular alfredo because it doesn’t feel as heavy or as rich after you consume it, but it is still appropriately creamy.

I think ideally this specific sauce should be served in a pasta or dish with lots of vegetables to really pair well with the creaminess and the lemon flavor – maybe as the sauce in a pasta primavera or with zucchini noodles.

The only real detractor for me is that strong lemon flavor – I do like lemon in my food, but this was overkill for me. I would still recommend this to my friends with that caveat because this is a non-dairy alternative that I liked quite a bit.

I would love to try this, as onions make me sick. But I am on a budget and it appears that this cannot be purchased with an EBT / SNAP card (food stamps). It should not be that expensive nor hard to obtain foods free of certain ingredients.

It makes no sense to me, to sell items with fewer ingredients for a higher price. There are sheeple who gladly pay top dollar for special diet foods, organics, etc. but I am not 1 of them! I cannot afford it but even if I could, I would not want to be wasteful.

I wish that more brands (Campbell’s, Hormel, Progresso, Ragu, etc. ) would jump on the “low Fodmap” bandwagon and offer modestly / reasonably priced sauces, soups, stuffing, etc. Many people have gut disorders and a good number probably do not realize that certain triggering foods or other factors are involved.

A must for anyone with onion/garlic sensitivities. The taste is pretty good given it omits some of the most flavorful components (onion, garlic). I am happy to sacrifice a bit of taste since it doesn’t leave me in pain.

It is also low in sugar compared to a lot of traditional sauces out there.

I can finally enjoy pasta sauce again while on the low FODMAP diet. This sauce tastes great and doesn’t hurt my sensitive tummy so I’m happy! Everyone needs this in their pantry!! Even the pickiest kids will eat this if you follow this simple recipe. 1. Blend the jar of sauce until you can drink it. 2. Pick your kids favorite pasta. I never put meat in mine but you can.

Kids don’t want al dente pasta. Cook it all the way. Add the pasta to the warm sauce add shredded mozzarella. Don’t forget the garlic bread.

idk what the big differences is between this in no sugar added cuz 😕 i love my sauce but i need 1 no salt added n lower sodium. kinda silly to have to combine both. but when your diabetic but you live on a tight budget you need to eat filling foods like pasta n sauce.

I’m very picky when it comes to tomato sauce and this is is fenomenal. I love the taste and its very delicious. I use this and only this sauce all the time in my spaghetti. It tastes just right and I keep buying it over and over again.

It really is thick and rich tasting and not too sweet like the other brands. It’s tomatoey with the perfect amount of tang. Awesome on whatever you like to eat ketchup with, especially burgers and fries! The price point is great too so you can’t go wrong.

Try this!! The knmy issue with this is when its half bottle you turn it upside down and squeeze, then squeeze a little more, then squeeze a little more. Still nothing. So, you squeeze just a little bit more, and BOOM, at least two tablespoons come out.

kids are always in trouble beacuse of this.

I was coming here to try and see if the recipe has changed at all over the past year or so. The sauce is still good, but seems to still have a more acidic or metallic taste/flavor to it. We’ve tried adding sugar and baking soda to help cut back on the acidity.

My family has been using Hunts for over 40 years. After reading through sone of the reviews I see I’m not the only one who noticed the change in taste/flavor from the original recipe. We are not fans and hope you consider switching back to the original recipe soon otherwise you’re going to be losing sone loyal customers.

This is one of the best Organic Pasta sauce’s out there today & you can’t even tell that it is lighter in sodium. I would highly recommend this Organic Marinara to anyone.

Can’t believe a lot salt vegan pasta sauce to taste so good, but this Amy’s low sodium marinara is the BEST!

Pretty good for a bottled sauce. Texture was a bit mushy still, but that’s to be expected. Being in a glass bottle, , you don’t have the tin can taste. Flavor is decent, I would prefer more texture.

First, I love the taste of this pizza sauce. Second is I want organic pizza sauce. The PRICE is GREAT Many organic pizza sauces say 0 Grams of Sugar added on the front label. Then, when you read the ingredients, you see that there is concentrated apple juice or some other fruit juice which is how they add FRUCTOSE to the sauce and are able to state 0 Grams of sugar added on the label.

That is a shame. This sauce Tastes great, has ONLY the sugar that occurs naturally in the tomatoes, the right spices and amount of those spices. I love it. I just add some EVOO to this sauce and for me, it’s perfect.

This pizza sauce is really quite delicious. I usually buy Don Pepino’s Pizza Sauce, but I wanted to try an organic sauce. Very satisfied with the taste, texture and consistency of this product and quite pleased to discover that is Low in Sodium, but High in Flavor.

Worth every penny of what it costs. the Organic Aspect is a plus on top of all of the other positive features.

Not really a pizza sauce but makes a decent pasta sauce. This is much too runny to use for pizza as it makes the dough too wet. The flavor and quality is excellent, just not as a pizza sauce. They should simply update the product label.
