20 Best Long Johns For Winter (2023 Updated)

For years I have worn long underwear as my pyjamas about 5 months out of the year, and also when I was an avid snowboarder for 9 years. These fit horribly–the worst I have ever had, and the material has ZERO stretch.

The waist is way too big, and the backside is way too small, as well as the calves of these, which are tight. When I bend over or squat down in them, they don’t stretch and not only give me a plumbers crack (crack hanging out), but they pull my underwear down too.

I actually have small hips and a small butt relative to the rest of my body (my hips are essentially a size 8, while my waist and bust are a size 12 or 14). So the fact that these don’t fit at all in the way they do (too tight in the butt/hips and too loose in the waist) is rather amazing.

Also, the elastic band is crap, and it’s sewn into a loop of the fabric so it twists. My husband’s pair has a separate elastic band sewn on the top, which would fit better. Big fail Champion, and I am highly disappointed, as I have loved all my high impact, large breasted Champion bras.

I will never buy these again. Luckily I got them on sale or I would be very upset at the cost. THEY NEED STRETCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I have been buying Duofold pants and tops for at least 15 years. The original “Originals” came in two weights — heavyweight (which was only available for men) and midweight (which was only available for women).

The heavyweight had 65% wool in the outer layer and the midweight had 25% wool in the outer layer. When I moved to Montana, I had to get the heavyweight version, even though it was made for men. Then, around 5 years ago, there was a change in the elastic being used for the waistband in the pants and it didn’t hold up through a normal wash cycle anymore.

(I used warm water for the wash and medium heat for the dryer). I still have one pair of pants that’s at least 12 years old and the elastic is still fine, so this was the first step toward lower quality by substituting inferior materials as a cost-cutting measure.

NOW the product being called “Originals” only has 25% wool in the outer layer. I had to buy some new pants and got the men’s version again. These are so thin that I have to wear two pair at the same time to get any kind of warmth from them.

They are not much heavier than my cotton leggings, and aren’t even as heavy as the old midweight ones I used to get. I realize that many products are shaving costs(and quality) in order to keep prices down, but this has gone too far.

These are NOT the Duofold “Originals” anymore and if I had an alternative to them (none of the other options have a good fit, according to online reviews), I would not buy them anymore. PLEASE — bring back the old “heavyweight” version and use a good elastic for the waistband!!!! Even if you have to charge more for them, at least they would be worth buying! These that I just got are NOT!.

I bought four different styles of Champion base layer pants and their coordinating tops to determine which worked best for me. 3 fit very well while this one didn’t. The waistband of these pants didn’t make it fully over my bum.

No other pair had that issue. Every time I squatted I felt like a construction worker. And they weren’t very easy to move in, not like the Varitherm flex weight pants which almost feel like you have no pants on at all allowing all kinds of movement.

The coordinating top of this style is long in torso length and sleeve length. That I loved. It was only because of the top that I didn’t reveal even more of my bum to the world. And they are definitely warm.

but I question if they’re very breathable. I’m a person who runs warm and these were making me overheat just trying them on. The other three pairs didn’t do that. The wool Originals felt warm but breathable, the Varitherm flex weight are super light, and the pink basic Varitherm pants fell somewhere in between.

As for these brushed back base layer pants, I’d never be able to do high intensity activities in them as I’d overheat. In my opinion, these are best suited for those who run cold, those who don’t have round muscular bums, or perhaps for anyone (whose bum fits in them) who needs some warmth during more sedentary activities.

I bought for my grandson who likes to sleep on my sofa in his jeans. The material is very smooth and warm, however they seem to pick easily. I got a pair of tweezers and pulled a picked thread back to the inside of them.

I hope they hold up.

Bought for my husband who works outside in all sorts of crazy Northeastern Ohio weather conditions to layer under his work clothes. Compared to Dickies and Carhartt thermal underwear, he has said these are the most comfortable and great at keeping the heat in.

Plus is that they wash great without pilling or shrinking. Hopefully they offer again as our oldest son would like a set too! Size chart was 100% spot on when I used it to determine what size to order.

These are well made and my husband says very warm which is great in 18degree weather. The bottoms fit very comfortably but the top too tight. That is why I only gave 3 stars. They really need to match the correct sizing on their thermals.

I don’t see how with the measurements of a typical man that either tops or bottoms are not going to fit properly. I did order another pair but the tops are too tight and bottoms just right.

I bought these by mistake. I thought I was ordering the regular thermal underwear. I was about to return them when I realized I could use them for running. The lightweight polyester blend is breathable, sweat-wicking and quick-drying.

They work well as a comfortable, non-chafing base layer under your running pants on those chilly winter runs.

I wear two full length leg braces, so I wear long underwear all year round as a protective layer between my skin and the brace. These Thermaskin base layer pants are wonderful, nice and thick and sumptuous.

The only drawback, and I knew this from the picture and the description, is there is no elastic at the hem to hold them in place. They work for me, my braces and my socks hold them in place fine, but I would prefer a little grip.

Still an excellent product, which I am very happy with.

The weight of the fabric is good, so they are warm enough for temperatures well below freezing. They would be perfect, if not for the fact that the waist elastic is way too tight for the size indicated.

I am not heavy weight at all, in fact a bit slim, but this waistband is really uncomfortable. Customers have been complaining about this for some time, and yet nothing has been done to change it.

Bought these to replace aging pair I already own & live in all winter long. Here’s the differences: Old pair has a looser fit w/ slightly stretchier material, and the legs are a little longer. The new pair is made w/ recycled fiber w/ a little less stretch, but still great for active exercise.

New pair hugs the body so it’s easier to get jeans, hiking pants, etc. over them. Notice many mention the waistband; it’s firm & thicker than the older pair & sits lower than natural waist. Very comfortable but bulk where most of us don’t need it, LOL! Yet the reason I re-ordered was the waistband on old pair stretched out, so it’s better made.

Overall, outerwear’s easier to pull on over body-hugging fit of new pair fits & feels true to size. Since the length sits just above my ankles, I layer over socks for warmth. Very happy w/ redesign!.

These merino long underwear pants (size M regular) are made from a good grade of wool and really are midweight–not too thin, not too thick. The pants have washed well so far (3 washes) and the seams are intelligently designed and well-made.

The fit is forgiving and yet does not sag on my body. (If they have shrunk lengthwise from washing, I may not have noticed because I’m short. ) However, the elastic part of the waistband is quite wide–1 3/4 inches on my pair, all around–and as I am petite (5’2″) and short-waisted, the waistband comes up pretty high on my abdomen and the edge of the elastic (which is affixed to the inside of the waistband) digs into my flesh a bit when I lean over.

I have taken to tucking my silk long-underwear base layer into the waistband of the pants, which helps quite a bit. I’m height-weight proportional, with an hourglass figure, and the waistband fits pretty well otherwise.

It doesn’t feel like the pants are slipping down. I winced at the $79 price, but as both my old pairs of Cresta midweights are wearing out, I paid it. The new pair is nice enough I feel like the price wasn’t a bad deal.

LLBean sent it with a $10 off coupon, which soothed any lingering sting. The Muted Purple color is nice, a welcome change from years of having the midweight merino pants available in black, black, charcoal gray or black! I see that these pants are currently sold out.

If I could have afforded another pair I’d have ordered two, as I have two pairs that are wearing out. Maybe they will be available again in the future in this design.

Just wore this base layer set (matching top & bottoms) on a 2-week winter excursion through Alaska. They worked very well for outdoor activities in frigid temperatures. Warm without being bulky or itchy.

I typically wear a Size 4/Small (sometimes XS. ) in LL Bean clothing, and the Small was just right for top & bottoms. Comfortable with room to move, but still fit under all but the tightest of my skinny jeans.

And the length of these is PERFECT for petite gals! I have disproportionately short legs and need petite sizes in all my pants, and these fall exactly where I would want them to, right at the ankle. I see that they are only available in one length, and people with longer legs might want a longer inseam.

But for me, these worked out great.

I was looking for thermal underwear that were sustainable and high quality, but would also not break the bank! After only hearing great things about this brand, I decided to purchase this set and I’m in love with it! I purchased a small though I wished they had extra-small; still fits great though however the pants are a bit too long for me.

Despite the size, I’m very satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend this brand. This set is lightweight but makes a huge difference when it’s colder outside which is great since I don’t like wearing too many layers.

I was impressed with the quality of this set at first. It definitely did the job for keeping me extra warm while taking up minimal space beneath my clothes. After only about six wears with gently handwashing these as instructed, though, the tights began to pill.

A lot. If you’re going to buy these, consider buying more than one set to decrease the use on a single set of the thermal wear.

Just what I was looking for! Love the v neckline on to top. And the close-fitting thin fabric fits well under clothing. My only issue is that the waist band of the pants cuts into me a little bit. I don’t have a small waist, so this is a common problem for me, and it’s only slight so it won’t stop me from wearing but I do wish I had a bit more room.

Hi All, I recently purchased 4 pair of Scandia Woods Thermal Underwear. I live in Cold Country — Green Bay, WI, whereas of today the temperature is 6*. These thermal underwear are very comfortable and smooth against my skin.

The fit is perfect. I laundered them as soon as they arrived and there is no roughness at all; they hug your skin, which is what you want them to do when it is 6* outside. The quality of weave and design is very good.

The thermal underwear are warm and comfortable. The cover of the waistband does not last very long at all. The rest of the underwear is still very good but the waistband cover tears and the elastic becomes unattached.

It is just right for sleeping . . . instead of pajamas or other sleepwear . . . will buy more . . .

Accurate sizing, very comfortable stitching and fabric. Keeps me really warm in the cold weather wherever I am. I have ordered more.

My grandad used to where long johns in the 60’s and I used to wonder why, well now I know because I’m 70 now and I can see why and this product from Big Dude does the job that my old grandad needed, kept him warm and these are well up for that job.

I’ve had several of these, they are nice and warm and look good enough to wear around the house. Perfect under a jean in winter.
