20 Best Loft Beds For Kids (2023 Updated)

I have never left a review before, but rely heavily on them when I make purchases (often ignoring the silly complaints). I want to start off saying as the bed sits in my daughter’s room now, I absolutely love it.

However, it has taken many man hours to get it to that level. The description of this bed does state it has “distressed finish” but the sentence is finished by information about paint and low voc. I took this to mean the paint finish (a thin application of which you can see the yellow of the wood behind).

However, for those of you reading who are not woodsy people, this means the wood itself is not smooth/finished. I purchased this because I wanted an all wood product, which is hard to find without spending a thousand dollars at pottery barn, and thought it was so cute with the cubby under it.

Upon opening the package, I discovered how raw the wood was when we started to put it together. In this process, the sheets got snagged by the wood edges and my daughter got a splinter. So, we took it apart, sanded each piece and then put back together, and needed to paint (and try to match distress levels) to get it as I assumed it would be upon arrival.

Even after this, my daughter since has gotten another splinter in a spot we missed sanding. The other part I was slightly turned off by was the horizontal grain of all wood except the panels around door, which are vertical.

Looks a little silly, but not a deal breaker. All this to say…it is a beautifully designed bed, but if you want to be able to dust it or have sateen sheets, plan to sand it by hand first. Also of note that I did not expect, a standard nice mattress (hers is 10”) does not allow for much guardrail remaining if you are nervous about a rolling kiddo! We now LOVE it and spend so much time playing in (under!) it, just took some work!.

Ladder can go on either side!! Wouldn’t recommend if you have multiple stories or don’t have someone to help you with this 200lb beast of a bed. After 4 hours of assembly, I can safely say that this bed is a permanent fixture in my home and looks MUCH better than the queen bed that was in her room.

30-40 pages of assembly instructions and a big thanks to my husband for figuring it all out. I applaud all of the single moms in the reviews because I honestly think this NEEDS 2 people to assemble. As they say, good things take time.

And the time put into this bed was well worth the effort. My 4 year old absolutely loves it. Everyday after school she runs to her room to go play under her bed. I love that this is a low loft bed, so getting in and out of bed is easy for my daughter and myself at night when I go to read books.

Seems to have no issues handling my weight plus hers. Pros:-Space saver and space for storage-under the bed hide-hole is great fun for littlesCons-the white finishing is not great, so I’ll consider it “farmhouse” chic-rough finish and some areas are very off white.

Could probably be finished with a cost of paint if you wanted to go the extra mile.

The bed frame itself is nice and sturdy. Some pieces are not labeled so you really have to be careful and be sure you’re using the right piece in the correct orientation. It’s a little difficult to follow the instructions because of overlapping arrows.

The desk top is about six inches too short and should have been made longer. When you place the stoppers (wooden dowels) on the top of the desk top to pull it out, you notice that there’s a very narrow space for a chair and for a right handed child, there’s not a lot of elbow room for them because they’re right up against the bed frame.

This is where the extra 6″ for the table top would be useful. Some of the parts that require a screw do not have pilot holes and the wood split. We had to use wood glue and clamps to fix them because the instructions specifically state not to use a drill.

If using a drill nullifies the warranty, then pilot holes should be everywhere a screw is required. This makes it difficult to hand screw with a screwdriver. Overall it looks nice and my son is really excited about it, but the pieces could all be labeled better and then pilot holes would help.

So it definitely is not what’s pictured. The handles are some weird metal with sharp corners instead of being wood knobs. Then the assembly is a disaster. The parts aren’t labeled so you have to go through and play a guessing game to figure out which pieces are which.

Once you get that figured out the instructions are straight forward. However. you will need at least 4 people to put together the bed portion, 3 for the dresser, and I still haven’t gotten to the shelves or desk portion.

The holes are only partially predrilled so good luck tightening these down without killing your hands. The dresser alone looks alot sturdier in the picture than it does in real life. Oh and as for it being made out of really wood?! Haha only some of the pieces.

The majority of it has a weird finish that scratches super easy. It’s very cheaply made. The product is not worth the outrageous price tag. its worth perhaps a third of it at most.

Bed: 4/5 The bed itself is sturdy and heavy, but there were some minor defects in the laminating. It was also hard to put together because some parts did not have predrilled holes to line up and using just a screwdriver is difficult.

I ended up using my own drill. Desk:4/5 Sturdy and easy to move in its rails, but same problem with the needing a drill instead of a a screwdriver. Also the mounting to the bed instructions weren’t as clear.

Bookshelf: 5/5 No complaints! Could use an extra foot on the bottom as it is slightly wobbly when separate from the bed, could be a safety issue. Dresser: 3/5 the worst of the bunch. Same problem with the predrilled holes/screwdriver, but on top of that the back panel was not flush to the unit so I had to guess where the nails were needed.

Ended up missing a few times. The bottom panels of each drawer also weren’t well aligned, causing some guess work. The drawers are super sturdy (using metal guides) but that adds to the heaviness. When all three are empty but open it easily tilts forward, not safe for my 4 year old.

I have to keep it under the bed for safety until he is trusted with it, which is not preferable. The knobs on the dresser are an odd matte nickle color. Not my preference, so I will probably end up switching them out later.

But again that is my preference. Overall gets a 4/5. A suggestion for the instructions is to add a paper measuring guide, printed on the back page maybe. A few instructions specified measurements for nails/screws, and it would help for some of these DIY drilling.

As for chemical smells, there was definitely a strong odor after opening. I breathe through my mouth a lot while during physical work and had a stinging sensation in the back of my throat. The smell went away after being in the open for about 12-24 hours.

Overall, our experience in purchasing this bed was horrible. It came much later than expected (despite the tracking number initially saying it would arrive on a specific day – it didn’t arrive until 2 weeks after that).

I reached out to customer service multiple times and was given a different response every time about when to expect my item to arrive. They also were never able to give me an estimate on when to expect the item to arrive.

So, it ended up arriving while we were on vacation. Then, when putting it together, the directions were so unclear that we actually had to take it apart twice and start over. Then, after all that, the last several steps were so poorly constructed that you basically have to screw a screw directly into another screw.

So we had to drill our own holes and hope that it didn’t split the wood, luckily it did not. To say I was disappointed with this experience is an understatement. For how expensive this product is and for the experience I would expect with a small well renowned company, it was disheartening.

With that said, our daughter loves the bed and has transitioned to her “big girl bed” seamlessly because of how cool the item is. She truly enjoys it and will get a lot of use out of it for many years to come.

Cute bed but ran into multiple issues. Pieces were mislabled, parts were not alignable or didnt fit properly and the bed is much shorter than i expected. spent more than 5 hours putting it together! Wood is actually real which is nice, but overall, not worth the price for me.

Purchased this for my 3 year old daughter and she is in love! The only negative is the drawers bottoms are basically cardboard but my husband went and purchased luan to replace it and they are much more sturdy! He does this with all new furniture with drawers.

Did notice a slight odor when putting it together but it was gone by bedtime. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a sturdy, cute, bed for their kids! It actually came 6 days earlier than expected, which was a huge plus!.

Our daughter’s brand new loft bed was delivered and assembled last evening. It was late and dark by the time the delivery men left, and already time for my child to actually go to bed. (It’s important to also note that the second bed I bought for my son, which I was told would be delivered at the same time, was NOT even available due to warehouse error—so my other child had no bed at all) The bed that DID arrive–the Novogratz Maxwell Loft Bed–and was assembled by your employees, has scratches, dents, dings, and scrapes all over it.

It actually looks like it was dragged across a cheese grater. The delivery men stated they “never put together this type of bed before”. It’s brand new and looks beyond used. Additionally, it is extremely wobbly and I’m not remotely comfortable allowing my child to sleep in this thing.

It seems as though this happens each time I get an item from this company and I’m extremely disappointed and angered by the matter. The same thing happened with my brand new couch a few months ago, which arrived with a gaping hole in the arm rest.

I cannot fathom paying almost $500 for something that looks like I grabbed it off the curb, nor can I chance waiting for a second loft bed that costs almost $600 to arrive looking similar in a ruined condition.

The bed came in well enough condition that I didn’t feel the need to get a replacement. The ladder part had some rust dust but that mostly came off. If you follow the directions and pay close attention to how the pieces need to be assembled, this bed is easy to put together.

I was disappointed about how wobbly the bed is. This bed was purchased for our 10 year old and when she climbs up it wobbles a considerable amount but she doesn’t seem to mind. The bed also creaks every time you move while in it.

Overall my 10 year old likes the bed and the price doesn’t break the bank. If you’re looking for an affordable loft bed to help save space and you don’t mind the wobbling or creaking then this is the bed for you but if you are looking for a solid loft bed that will last a long time, I would recommend spending more and finding a different bed.

This bed is perfect for our son’s room! It was fairly easy to put together, two people were only needed for a few of the steps. It has great height (just don’t choose this if you don’t have at least 8 ft ceilings because your child won’t have room to get onto the top bunk).

He also loves the huge space underneath and the extra long desk space. He said he feels like a professional youtuber now, even though he doesn’t have a youtube channel. lol. I can see this lasting him many years.

Overall, I’d strongly recommend avoiding this company, and encourage you to find another bunk bed option. Once assembled (which was not an easy process) we put two standard-sized twin mattresses in. The bottom bunk, once the mattress was laid in, felt like a crawl space.

The kids (6 & 2) both felt uneasy in the space from the start. One thing the site doesn’t show is that there’s a thick metal bar that runs the full length of the top bunk. It hangs lower than the wooden slats holding the top bunk up and droops above the lower mattress.

It’s a thick, unforgiving chunk of metal, which, when combined with a low clearing, creates a real hazard as we found out. My two-year-old repeatedly slammed her head against it when waking up in the middle of the night, on several occasions.

Then nearly knocked herself out when she had a nightmare and was trying to leave the bed. She has large contusions and refused to sleep in it again. Not a fun experience for a young kid. When I called and explained the situation (after disassembling and packing it up) I’m informed I have to pay a restocking fee.

AND I have to pay for shipping back. Instead of a full refund (and maybe an apology for the injuries my youngest sustained), I’m going to eat several hundred dollars on an item I don’t even own anymore.

Long story short – there are plenty of amazing companies out there that are much easier to work with, have more forgiving policies, and extend some common courtesy when confronted with a situation like ours – a traumatized child with head injuries.

The coldest I experienced with their returns department is surreal, and I hope everyone reading this heeds my warning. Find another bunk bed. This one isn’t worth it.

This is such a cute and fun bed. Purchased for my daughter for her 3rd birthday and she loves it. The tent part is so nice because it doesn’t take away from the space she needs to play in her room. She likes to sit in it with her lovies and read.

The tent fabric seems sturdy enough but the way the windows are sewn is big enough for her head to fit through so I could see it getting ripped. It took my husband a little less than 2hours to put it together.

The ladder is capable of being put on either side so it gives you options on how and where you want it.

She fell asleep in her new bed. Our daughter loves her new bed. The quality is definitely there. Assembly instructions are thorough. There is a crack at the end of the main bed frame rail that supports the mattress.

I contacted the seller and they have a new piece being delivered to me. All in all, I am satisfied with the purchase.

My girls (6 and 4) went CRAZY over this bed. It’s super sturdy and pretty easy to put together. All the parts were clearly numbered and directions were straight forward. We got 10″ mattresses which give a few inches of rail to keep them from rolling off.

(I think a 12″ mattress would be too thick and hit at the top of the rail. ) Similar beds were way more expensive but didn’t have the cute accessories like slide and chalkboard. It’s perfect for kids that aren’t quite big kids but also aren’t toddlers.

We plan on getting a pool noodle, cutting it, and adding it to the lip in front of the slide. The transition isn’t super smooth and haven’t had a problem but seems like it would be more comfy.

Amazing bed and price for EVERYTHING being solid wood bed frame, bookcases and chest. The assemble was fairly simple. The only reason why I’m giving 4 stars is because some of the finish of the bed frame needed more sanding and had some parts that could leave a splitter on my kid.

I fixed that. Also some natural wood marks that could have been painted and finished a little better. But overall totally worth the price and beautiful furniture. OJ commerce customer support was also great when I called to ask about my email confirmation and tracking number, they were having system issues and I did not received either, but the customer service was great (aside from the waiting time) and the shipping was very fast!!.

To say we werent pleased with this bed was an understatement. We got it in espresso, and you can see dents and scratches all over EVERY single piece of this! Packaging clearly needs to be better. While setting the bed up, we actually had to drill new holes for the guard rail as the predrilled ones left the pieces going up and down at a slant and it was very noticable.

Onto the dresser. we had to super glue 2 of the knobs on because the screws they provided only take about 3 spins on the knob and then they stripped out before they were even tight! Desk- we had to redrill almost all of the holes on one side or the other on this.

It was a disaster. It was most definitely NOT a put it together yourself with the tools provided. It took us about 8 hours to get those 3 pieces complete. We havent even done the bookcase yet because who knows what issues that will have.

If my son didnt love it, I would of taken it back down and sent it right back. Total nightmare. The only reason I am even giving this 2 stars is because it is still standing this morning! I ordered it Friday and it was on my porch Tuesday! 5 days for shipping something this heavy is impressive and deserves some recognition.

5* for Product – I chose gray; happy with the low price, features (dresser, desk, shelves), better quality than expected, sturdy, solid, strong, took some time to build as it includes many parts, real wood, much better than IKEA shaky furniture and their particle board.

5* Service and website – I was a little skeptical of ordering from this website as I am not familiar with their brand, but after shopping many if not all possible sellers, this had the best price and seemed reliable; the product arrived in about two weeks, website interface is easy to use; it is extremely heavy and one unlucky dude had to carry it from the truck to my doorstep, he may have dropped the corner of it as the box was ripped but the contents, thankfully, we OK.

The cuties and best bed I’ve purchased thus far. Very sturdy. My daughter loves the hiding spot under the bed. It’s held up over toddler bed jumping.

I don’t know what the MonarchSpecialitiesExpert is talking about. We just bought this bed in Jan 2021 and set it up, 3 years after they say its no longer available. I believe the weight limits are 200lbs per level, and the welding is bare minimum so I wouldn’t test it.

The bed shakes and bows easily and honestly had I known this beforehand, I may have bought a twin bunk instead. It’s kind of sketchy. For holding two double beds, it doesn’t seem made to do so. I chose this bed because we already have the double mattresses.

But if the weight limit is 200lbs per level, that doesn’t leave much room for a person after the weight of the mattresses. My kids are young enough thankfully, but 2 teens technically can’t enjoy this safely.

If your kids are older, just spend the extra money and buy a different one.

I first purchased this bed in August 2020. it’s now January 2021 and I am purchasing a new bedframe and taking this one to the dump. it was so squeaky that it would wake me up in the middle of the night just rolling over, and while relaxing before bed a deep breath could elicit a creak.

after taping every possible spot that could cause a squeak, oiling the frame, replacing screws it was even STILL so loud even my 6lb cat would cause squeaks. when disassembling the centre support legs simply came off with a quick pull.

DO NOT BUY THIS FRAME. it looks nice, but is nothing but a headache and poor sleep waiting to happen.

Originally, this wasn’t the bed we were supposed to end up with. I ordered a different triple bunk (made by a different manufacturer) and experienced nothing but nightmares. It arrived with a major piece broken and cracked.

It took about a week to get the replacement piece and once my husband began to build, he noticed another major piece of a bottom footboard had the pre-drilled wholes done upside down. The drivel for where a screw was supposed to go and would not fit where it was supposed to go.

The screw for nowhere. We scraped that bed and ordered a second one (same one) and it arrived with the same manufacturer problem. I gave up on that bed, and about 3 weeks later, this arrived and was a dream come true! It’s sooooo sturdy and heavy duty!! And the best part, all of the footboards, headboards, side rails and ladders were already constructed!! This is a rarity!!! My husband got it together super fast and it’s beautiful!.

At first I was skeptical to buy this bed for our three year old, there weren’t many reviews on it and I try to take reviews into consideration before purchasing products online. After back and forth for a while, my husband convinced me to just go ahead and buy, and I am so glad he did.

We love this bed, it’s exactly what we needed in our son’s new room. It seems to be very sturdy so far. The only complaint I have is that all of the pieces were not labeled so it took a while to put together.

We love this bed. My daughter made a little lounge area underneath. Material is sturdy and nice quality & color. It was somewhat easy to put together but pay close attention to the instructions because there are certain ways things need to go and sometimes we got ahead of ourselves without checking the instructions and had to redo.

But if you take your time and follow instructions it isn’t difficult. My daughter actually wants to sleep in her room and hang out underneath to read and watch her tablet. It’s not too high where I worry about her falling and getting extremely hurt and railing goes up high enough for a good barrier.

I bought this bed for my nephew, it was a great way to get him a bigger bed and include one of his favorite things, slides! Having a child at home during quarantine has been tough, especially since the parks are closed, but this has been good for entertaining him and wearing him out throughout the day.

The bed was easy enough to tag team on and put together. We also bought the tent to go with the bed and while it’s fun and it looks cool, our kid regularly takes the Velcroed panels off as he goes in and out.

since we put the mattress from our futon under the bed, which has made for a cool fort aspect. The only thing that could be better is the edge of the slide seems to be uncomfortable when the kids slide off of it, they’ve taken to putting pillows underneath them to cushion themselves.

We bought this for my daughter for Christmas and finally put it together yesterday. Not only was it difficult to put together, it’s made of the cheapest of cheap particle board/MDF. I can’t believe I spent what I did.

We had also purchased a similar model from Wayfair (for $100 less), for our other child, and that one is made of solid wood and took half the time to install. Very disappointed with this Zulily purchase.

My 6 year old loves her new bed and playhouse! This was her birthday gift; her room made over, and it really only took a coat of paint in the walls and adding this bed to make it perfect! Bed is easy to put together and much higher quality than I actually expected.

You are getting what you paid for here, it is also structurally sound and well painted/finished. Great amount of play space underneath the full size bed. We are all very pleased with this purchase. Only down side is that I can’t actually make the bed up nicely from the floor.

My daughter doesn’t care and typically just uses a comforter and a lot of pillows and sleeps sideways in it anyhow. So that isn’t really a problem for us, I just ask her to straighten the comforter to clean up.

We bought this for my daughter and she loves it! It seems like it would be a big project to build at first glance, but it was actually very easy to assemble, instructions were clear and not hard at all.

My daughter loves it, she sleeps inside of it on a small mattress and calls it her dream house bed. The mattress for the top is a memory foam one we bought at Walmart and it fit perfect.

This bed is just as advertised! Its very sturdy and the finish is beautiful! I would definitely recommend this product to anyone. The price is amazing! The only thing I would say was a negative is the shipping time.

We ordered June 12 and finally received it July 21.

The schoolhouse stairway loft bed is one awesome bed. It is well constructed and safe for you precious grandchildren. Not only is the bed awesome but the service at Hayneedle is outstanding. My 6 year old loves her loft bed. It saves her so much space and creates a play cave with a desk for her. The drawer staircase allows her to store toys and provides her a safe staircase with hand rails to get to her bunk.

Time consuming to assemble and need s two people, us the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars.

Omg!!! I love it!! Perfect size for my two boys ages 5 and 2. slide makes it fun and easy to get off top bunk and the size is PERFECT for them as it’s not a traditional bunk bed. So bottom bed slides right on the bottom.

And for extra fun we put sheets folded on the sides of the bottom bunk so it’s a tent too!! Lol best bunk bed I ever paid for and my oldest is 18 so I have had a few! Lol definitely recommend for small children!!.

Solid construction and good quality. Came on a pallet with roughly 8-10 separate boxes. Plan on having a good amount of space to unpack the boxes and get it put together. Once taken off the pallet, the boxes take up about as much space as a compact car.

Heaviest one was 95 pounds. Possible for one person to assemble it, easier to have two people for some parts. Not difficult, just some big pieces. Dresser was pre-assembled. Everything else was flat-packed.

Instructions were in the last box I opened, of course. Took a full day for me to get it assembled and in-place. All the hardware was included. Technically all you need is a screwdriver, but it’s nice to have an electric one because there are a lot of screws–especially when installing the slats for the mattress.

I was happy to see that you can choose which side you want the dresser on and also which side you want the ladder on. The dresser drawer slides are very nice. The desk has predrilled holes to pass wires through.

A regular twin mattress fits fine. I’m 5’10” and I can just barely sit on the chair, at the desk, with about a half-inch of headroom. I recommend the tray (sold separately) that hangs off the bed rail to hold glasses, book, drink, phone, etc.

The drift wood finish is textured with shallow grooves across the entire surface and then painted. It looks nice, but I would have preferred a smooth surface–especially for a desk. We’ll need a blotter I think.

I suspect the other finishes are smooth. Good quality overall. Everything feels very sturdy. No problems with construction or finish.

We purchased this several weeks ago and we are happy with the purchase. The company who installed this bed were very good as well. The only complaint we have is that smell of the paint has been strong the first few days after the install.

Other than that it is very sturdy and built with quality products.

Our unit arrived almost five months after ordered date with broken pieces. Once replacement parts for broken pieces arrived a few weeks later, it was discovered that more pieces were missing from the boxes that hadn’t been opened yet, so we had to wait yet another few days for unit assembly to get all of the parts to our order.

The fact that my son was pleased with his new unit is the only reason why this review is two stars instead of one. All in all, our experience with Coleman was not positive and we will not be ordering from this company again.
