20 Best Liver Supplements For Dogs (2023 Updated)

My vet recommended these almost 2 years ago for treating my senior cat’s fatty liver disease, along with a change to hydrolyzed dry food. We’re making slow progress on her blood work, but Denamarin is EASILY the best liver pill I’ve tried getting down my cat’s stubborn little gullet (tiny and coated)! Even the company’s other pill, Denosyl, isn’t as good.

And, to be blunt, finding this blue pill when they do vomit. is a lot easier than the red/brown of Denosyl. Gross, but vital, when you need to know the medicine STAYED down, right? She’s been holding steady and showing slight improvement, and is now 14 years old.

Hoping this pattern continues or improves, but it was rough when Denamarin was out of stock with the pandemic. Denosyl is a decent back-up, but I do feel Denamarin is more effective when I see my cat’s blood test values.

My senior Shih Tzu was diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease in May 2021. Her liver enzymes were very high. Vet put her on Vetoryl and Denamarin. It seems to help. My dog is living almost a normal life. Even though she’s 14lbs, Vet said just 1 pill a day.

It’s hard to give her meds or supplements. You are not supposed to crush or split this pill. I tried everything and finally found one that works, liverwurst! I wrapped the pill with it and she takes it like a treat.

I give it to her first thing in the morning, about the same time, an hour before her breakfast. She was on the Denamarin Advanced version but there’s always availability issue. So whichever one available is what I give her.

Supposedly, the Advanced is more absorbing/effective. Vet said she can take the Advanced or the regular. Vet wants her on this for the rest of her life, with her Vetoryl prescription.

My 10 month old Ragdoll, Michelangelo, has high liver enzymes and nobody knows why. Immediately when I found out, I researched it, and saw that many people recommended this product. Unfortunately, it apparently is not in stock anywhere frequently, so I had to use Denosyl plus I bought some milk thistle.

Then this came back in stock, so I have been using this for the past few weeks. I don’t know if it’s this product, or a couple of prescriptions the vet gave me, but his ALT came down from 1332 to 74! He will be off the prescriptions in another week or so to do another blood test, but he will be taking Denamarin for the rest of his life to protect his liver.

Just make sure you don’t order it in the same order as anything heavy though, because the boxes are flimsy and my boxes came crushed, which opened up the foils covering the pills and crushed some of them.

Chewy was great though and replaced them.

Vet had Ozzy on Vetriscience Hepaticlear chews, but they must really taste awful because it was difficult getting our boy to take them. so we are trying these because of other reviews. So far, so good.

We were originally recommended this product for our 10-1/2 year old Scottish Terrier, due to having elevated Liver enzymes. Since he has been on this, his test are now in the normal range. We couldn’t be more pleased.

My dog’s vet had recommended this supplement because some of my dog’s liver enzyme values are high. She has had several rounds of bloodwork, an ultrasound and liver biopsy. We still do not have an answer.

Her levels have not gone down nor have they gone up. So, I cannot really say if it is actually helping but Vet recommended and I trust my Vet.

Our dog got very sick in February 2020. and the vet found that his liver enzymes were way too high. The vet gave our dog an antibiotic and some other meds in office and then recommended sam-E (S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine or also known as S-Adenosylmethionine) as a supplement for a thirty day duration to help with the liver.

Then, in mid-March, when our dog was finished with all thirty pills of sam-E, we took him back to our vet to have another blood test run. The sam-E apparently worked as his numbers for his liver were in the normal range.

(Plus we could tell that he definitely was feeling much better … back to his old energetic self again). While at the vet, I showed the doctor the box of Denosyl I purchased online. I purchased it because it is almost half the price of what our vet charges.

Although it is a different brand, it is the very same chemical component as the brand we initially bought at the vet. I asked the vet to be sure because that dog is my baby. The vet approved of the Nutramax Denosyl and confirmed that it was the same chemical component as their brand that they sell.

I am happy because this makes it affordable.

My Labrador: TBone has been dealing with liver problems since puppyhood. This medication/supplement has been prescribed for 7+ years. If not for this medication, my dog would have perished around 7 years ago.

This medication is around $50 for 30 pills. Honestly, there is no price high enough to stop me from doing everything possible for my TBone. Most dog lovers would feel the same way. If this medicine/supplement is Vet recommended, I hope you do everything you can to get this medicine for your dog(s).

Our 14 year old Wheaton’s health had been declining. She developed some habits that were red flags for us, including urinating frequently, periodically vomiting at night, excessively licking her belly area, and drinking profuse amounts of water.

She stopped vomiting, and no longer needed to go out frequently. It’s now been 6 months that we’ve added the supplements. Her symptoms have completely ceased, and she’s back to her old self. At her last vet appointment, her bloodwork came back normal.

Our 14 year old senior girl has had a gunky eye and what we fondly refer to as “Swiss cheese sinuses” as long as we’ve had her. I’ve tried various different lysine products over the years (treats and gels) and she can’t stand them.

I bought this and she loves it! We mix 2 grams (measured using a kitchen scale) into her wet food every day. It mixes in completely and she INHALES her wet food. I bought these because it’s hard to find the brand with the big blue pills and I thought that they would be nice because they are a flavored chewable. Well, my dog who would eat anything if put in front of him refuses to eat these.

He’ll put them in his mouth and spit them out. I tried crushing them and putting them in a little bit of a yummy food, but he refuses them even hidden in yumminess. I don’t know if they help liver values or not because I just can get him to eat them.

Keeping that in mind, my review is for “taste” and not actually if they do what they are intended to do or not. (will not eat the SamE either).

I was told back in April 2021 that my little guy had some Liver Issue and they were not sure what was wrong with him. Over the past several months he has been thru so much testing that has cost me well over $1000.

My 16 year old Beagle/Basset mix had a terrible bout of pancreatitis. Her blood work showed her liver levels were low. At her age it wasn’t expected to improve. I started cooking for her and bought Zesty Paws Liver Support Bites to add to her new diet.

I started by giving her 1 daily as suggested. Since she tolerated them, and loves them, I started giving her 2 a day. In September, her blood work showed her liver levels are normal now! The vet was even impressed!.

Great ingredients for liver detoxing. And yes, curcumin will leave a stain, of course. My elderly dog needed something to support his liver. I agree with some of the people who said their dog/dogs wouldn’t eat them.

My dog is pretty picky. We started out mixing a tablespoon of canned ground dog food with the bite, crumbled up. It works. Next we will try little balls of raw ground beef and work the crumbed bite up in it.

My husband made and froze a half month’s worth. Cats and dogs know when their food is tampered with. Better to give them a TREAT than ruin their normal meal. Reason for 4 instead of 5 stars — the distaste of the product w/o something added.

Also, we won’t know it if works until new blood work is done.

My furbaby has been having issues with elevated liver enzymes in last year. We tried the Denamarin first but this SameLQ has worked way better. Her liver enzymes were over 1000 before going on liver support.

She is now under 300. For my baby this stuff seems to work.

Easy to administer, convenient chewable (or in the case of my Lab, inhalable) tablets. My Lab has Copper Toxicosis, and along with a change in diet this product brought her liver numbers down to nearly normal.

My 1 year old dog was recently diagnosed with liver issues. My vet recommended that I try adding Milk Thistle to her diet. Being that my little girl is a picky eater, I was quite concerned that she would not touch her food if this product was added.

To my surprise, my fussy eater was not bothered by this product. She’s only been on this product for about 2 weeks now but I have noticed a big change. Her appetite is much better and she seems to have a lot more energy too.

We made another visit to the vet a couple days ago and even my vet noticed the difference. I will continue to keep my fur baby on Herbsmith Powdered Milk Thistle since it does seem to make her feel better.

My dogs vet prescribed denamarin for her liver health. It went out of stock every where and due to the pill size I could not get her to take it without chewing. This product is one of 2 active ingredients in that drug and this one is a powder.

My dog doesn’t notice this powdered milk thistle on her food. So easy. I just sprinkle the powder on at mealtime. No more cramming that denamarin pill down her throat every day to prevent her from chewing it.

I have a kitty about 15 years old. I had noticed her always at the water bowl, and had been concerned about her liver or kidneys. I thought I would try some milk thistle. Within about 3 days the differences were noticeable.

She has now been taking it ~4 weeks. She has stopped drinking excessively. She spends her time out in the living room every night instead of going back to the bedroom. She is playing with the cat toys.

My dog is 11 years old and I give this to her to support her kidney. The ingredients in this are great and seem super healthy! I only wish it came in a tablet or chew format. I was surprised to take off the seal to see that the powder itself is dark brown (the color of potting soil).

It makes quite a mess on my dog’s muzzle fur. I have to immediately clean her mouth with a wet wipe after she eats her meal, since it literally looks like she went shoving her face into a garden! Just a forewarning, especially for dogs and cats with long/light-colored hair.

She noticed the difference in her food with the powder on top right away. As other reviewers have said, it definitely smells, but not by a repulsive amount. Thankfully, she’s a good girl and still eats everything, just more slowly and carefully than she would without the powder.

My outer packaging must be an older one (expires next year) because it looks different from the updated profile picture. Thus, I’m not sure if the powder color inside changed. I did have identical issues with another Dr.

Mercola product (for vision health) in terms of messiness. The powder was light purple, but I guess light purple is a tiny bit easier to clean than dark brown. In conclusion, Dr. Mercola has excellent pet products with positive results; I only wish that they came in non-powder forms.

Sometimes, you buy things to help your dog’s health, even if it means taking the extra steps to clean their faces and bowls more thoroughly. Truthfully, after she finishes this, I won’t buy any additional Dr.

Mercola POWDER products. However, I’m happy to try their non-powder supplements for the sake of my beloved senior dog.

I noticed this I give my cat one scoop a day. I noticed my cats brown spots slowly backing away. If I stop giving this to her the brown spot in her eyes come back. Thanks to Dr becker and Dr mecola for making this for cats health.

I hope the iris melanosis goes away. I will do my best to keep my senior kitty love well and provide for her everyday. My little pride and joy.

unfortunately my cat has bad reactions to something in this. i’m familiar with all of the ingredients and their purposes, and really thought adding this product to her regimen would give her an extra boost (she has very well-managed intermediate stage renal insufficiency) but her condition started going rapidly downhill from just a few tiny doses of this.

not to mention, she absolutely hates the taste of it. i don’t know what the problem is but i can’t take anymore chances so won’t be giving this powder to her again.

My dog has been prescribed this for the past two years and I save money! My dog’s vet charges $7 more a bottle. When I buy three at a time it is like buy one get one free from ValleyVet.

My 18 month male cat came home very poorly and developed a very nasty cough, the vet diagnosed asthma so gave him a steroid injection and said when they neutered him they would cray him. So I searched the Internet for something that would help him, the first couple of doses I did put in a small amount of food but I then tried it on a spoon and he lapped it up like a good boy.

He did seem to improve and thought he would be well enough to get neutered and get the xray I believed he needed and here it gets really really bad, he went down hill very very quickly although he would still take lung gold off of a spoon, I became really worried and spent hours trying to find a vet to see him as it was out of hours.

He finally got to a vet and was rushed away and put into an incubator and had a mask with oxygen being pumped into him. At 3. 33am the vet rang to tell me had to be revived they managed to get an xray only to discover he did not have asthma at all but his diaphragm was severely damaged and he was sadly put to sleep a few minutes later.

My poor boy had been hit by something which had destroyed his diaphragm so badly that he would not have survived the surgery, his diaphragm was so badly damaged that everything the diaphragm holds in place had moved up and he would have died during surgery.

I apologise for such a long review but I wanted to let people know just how good this product is, it definitely helped my precious boy by reducing his cough and improved his breathing. Please if your precious baby comes home noticeably unwell and develops a cough please insist on an xray just to be safe.

My boy had been out for no more than half an hour and although the is hardly any traffic around my home the next road does have cars and buses. If you’ve read this far and in any doubt if you should buy this product as your cat has breathing problems, I would recommend that you try this because I have no doubt that it helped my boy so much and if nothing else I got longer with him because of lung gold.

My 14 year old, medium sized, mixed breed dog had a concerning blood panel with elevated liver levels about six weeks ago. The vet offered a prescription, but after doing some research, I decided to try these first.

The vet agreed with my approach and we just retested his levels–all are back in normal range or very near! He wasn’t sure if he liked them at first, but has grown to love his “treat time. “.

I had used the brand of liver support in the tablet form with great success. I ordered the soft chews, thinking it would be easier to give to my dog. They were hard as rocks-my dog couldn’t chew them.

I had to cut them with a knife & hide them in his food. He would eat everything in his bowl BUT these “chews”. Chewy sent me a replacement, but that also was unusable. A waste of my money.

I only gave them a 4 star BC I haven’t taken her back for blood work yet but she takes them like a treat. They are so much easier to give than the Denamarin. I can give these with or without food and she likes the flavor unlike the blue pills.

Hopefully these are helping her liver values go down. Will review again after blood work.

Got these for my dog after reading the reviews so wasn’t sure what to expect. The first bag I got wasn’t bad, it wasn’t super soft but it was breakable. At first my dog didn’t like it too much but after a few days he started eating it fine (I gave him a whole one in the morning w his food and a half at night with his food, and sometimes I’d top it with salmon oil or carrots etc or other times plain) After using a whole bag it seemed like they were helping maybe so I ordered another one.

I just recieved it yesterday and gave him one without even thinking. This morning I opened it for his breakfast and realized it had a smell, so I smelled the bag and it smells like WINE? It smells like alcohol, literally like wine.

I don’t know why I didn’t notice it yesterday (it was late when I opened it so I assume I was too tired to notice) but I’m honestly unsure if I want to give him any more of these because the smell is so offputting, it makes me nervous.

The first bag didn’t have this smell, just kind of a general dog food-esque smell. The newer bag also has a different color (old bag was darker brown, newer one is lighter and more crumbly) Sucks because I do think they were helping in a way and thought I’d found something to keep using.

I did notice it says it’s on sale and was wondering why such a steep sale. Maybe there are problems with certain batches? Not sure :-(.

As others have mentioned, they are not soft, but they are not crunchy either. They are pretty hard. My little dog has trouble eating them. She only weighs 10 pounds so I only give her 1/3. But she struggles with even a piece that small.

I am going to try to cut them up in even smaller pieces and put them in her dog food. If that doesn’t work, I will be contacting Chewy to see if I can return them. I think if she could chew them she would probably like them.

She does not seem to mind the smell. I can tell that she wants to eat it, she just can’t chew it.

Our precious little Nugget had not been feeling well since we had to say our final goodbyes to his brother Trooper. At first we thought he was mourning and depressed and then he started to throw up bile at different intervals of the day and night.

We decided it was more then mourning. He was sick. We managed to get him in to the vet pretty quickly and they did a round of blood work to discover his ALT and GGT were elevated. His ALT were 555 and the healthy range is 10 to 125.

The GGT were elevated to 11 and the healthy range is 0 to 11. The vet put him on a special Hepatic Diet and recommended we give him Milk Thistle. So I came home and searched the net and discovered this site who specialized in pets.

I ordered the largest bottle and we just had blood work done on Wednesday and his levels of the ALT is at 249. His GGT is high but normal at 11. Between the restricted diet which is a low protein diet and this Milk Thistle for Dogs it has done the trick.

We go for repeat blood work late Aug to early Sept. Also he became un interested in eating he Royal Canin Hepatic Loaf food so I am now home cooking for my two boys. Again Nugget is on a low protein healthy regime and Bentley is on a regular home cooked healthy diet.

we had already bought this product but this time the supplements were little bit to hard and even for me to destroy it with my hands because my dog is old and he doesn’t have teeth so we need to make everything more watery than normal.

I really don’t know if now the supplements are more hard or my bottle was little bit open. This product is working that’s the most important thing.

Cats don’t like it. Smells like a jerky. I wonder why? I disguise it in their food. They’ve only had it for about five days. Too soon to see improvement in male cats seizures due to Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy.

These are larger than the original capsules. My dog loves treats but will not eat these. I used to put a small amount of wet food with the capsules and she loved it. I have to cut these in half and use twice the amount of wet food to get her to eat them.

Gabe, my 15 1/2 year old Golden/Sheltie, has had his gall bladder removed, and has a heart condition and some arthritis. I’ve been giving him a plethora of meds for these conditions and have been frustrated feeling that he wasn’t having the quality of life I’d hoped for.

After she had an impacted anal gland, Dr. Google told me that omegas can help with the inflammation and expression of anal glands and to try a fish oil capsule. This brand is amazing, it’s been two weeks and she already has a healthy shine on her coat.

It’ll take a recheck at her vet to see how her glands are doing, but coat-wise, she looks so much more improved. It hasn’t helped with shed control, but supplements take a while to show full results.

The only downside is she hates the taste and will sometimes even pick it out of pill pockets.

I’ve been giving this to my 5 month old Akita for almost 2 weeks and noticed immediate results. For the first couple days I only gave him half a dose because he has a sensitive stomach and I didn’t want to shock his system.

He usually has loose stool when he’s given any new treats or supplements but he adjusted just fine. With the half dose, he would still sniff his poops and lick a little, but with the full dose he walks away immediately.

I especially like that this is formulated without the extra stuff like probiotics and other vitamins like other brands because he’s already taking other supplements and I don’t want to over do that. He does need 3 each meal because of his size, so it does add up.

I’m hoping he breaks this habit soon because he’s still growing and 1 jar won’t last long for him.

My 5 yr terrier and 6 yr old pups both take this supplement. My 5yo has been on it most of her life as she came to us from the rescue with a broken leg from the previous family. She takes 2 tablets a day and she is 67 lbs.

when the weather has extreme temperature changes, we dose her twice. We use this supplement for her as an alternative to pain meds and she does fantastic with these tablets. Our other is a 6 yr old Transylvanian hound and he is 104 lbs.

since he is a big boy and approaching his senior dog years, we give him 2 tablets once a day. He takes them down no problem, while she has to be persuaded with a little bit of peanut butter on each tablet.

I can’t express how eternally grateful I am the almost miraculous changes I have seen in my precious cat. Her name is Thunder and I was afraid I was going to lose her. Her nasal congestion was so bad that she had a dramatic weight loss.

I rescued this part Siamese cat, which I thought had allergies. I’ve tried all kinds of natural antibiotics, which worked 1/2 time. Then 1 morning, I was awakened with Curly wheezing terribly. Tried everything I could.

I say that, as previous owner abused Curly by taking her food away and when I took her home she ate and ate and ate. She’s very gentle, but doesn’t like strange cats in “her” yard. She’s a protector! She doesn’t have the scared look on her face since I’ve been giving her these drops.

My dog is 13 yrs old and 6 months ago was diagnosed with Cushings. After vets recommendations, I the began a crusade for a better more natural approach to handle this disease as I found the vets way invasive, expensive and honestly not giving my dog a good approach to living out her remaining part of her life.

My little poodle mix, 13 lbs, took a direct hit in the face from a skunk. Worst of all, her mouth was open, so it went down her throat as well. As my vet said, “It is a good thing you are trained because it could have killed her.

” A direct hit, with skunk spray going down the throat causes immediate esophageal swelling (Esophagitis) and aspiration (liquid in your airways instead of air). A dog will froth at the mouth, her nose was completely covered in mucus with over production of saliva so no air whatsoever was passing through her nose or mouth.

She collapsed so I began emergency procedures for aspiration. Because you have to be very careful around the eyes and nose when applying various treatments to remove the stink (dawn/peroxide/baking soda or tomato juice or Nature’s Miracle, etc.

) after your dog has stabilized, some of the stench remains for days and weeks. This is very hard on a dog’s liver because your liver must process not only chemicals and toxins that pass through your system but it has to process smells you breathe.

I had just run out of the liver tonic so I ordered a bottle to be shipped overnight because my dog was so lethargic and doing poorly. I knew her liver was suffering because of having to breathe that constant stench.

Within two days of starting her on the liver tonic both her disposition and overall health changed dramatically. She was up and running and nearly herself. I have no true (actual) knowledge if this is working positively or not for my dog Dexter. However, I believe it is, at least to some degree because his symptoms have improved but I’ve not taken him back to the vet to have him rechecked.

I took him to the vet originally because of a severe cough. At first, it sounded like kennel cough but none of our dogs have ever been at a kennel & we have 7 pups! One of our other pups got the cough as well but with some homemade remedies applied to his food and boiron tablets for dry non-productive cough, it was gone within 3 weeks.

Dexter’s cough subsided but never went away completely. It got so bad that he was struggling to breathe so I finally took him to a vet. They thought it could be heartworms, cancer or other things which I don’t remember right now.

For that we are thankful! We will continue to use these products as funds allow and in the future we will try more of what this company offers!!.

Logan had elevated liver enzymes and on 2 courses of traditional medication prescribed by his vet. After the 2nd prescription his liver function was still not normal, but improved. His vet wanted him to get a ct scan.

A friend suggested liver tonic and Logan’s vet agreed it would be ok if his blood was retested in 2 months. Well he was and is totally normal!! Our vet is shocked and planning on investigating the tonic himself 🙂 Ty we are very excited and plan on keeping him on it another 3 months and will then retest his blood to confirm everything he is still doing well.
