20 Best Lenses For Moon Photography (2023 Updated)

At first I was a little concerned that it wasn’t sharp enough. But I kept with it, and learned its peculiarities. So after a few days I started to get really sharp images. I’m not sure why. I would have thought that the wider the lens the easier to get sharp images.

but there you go. I just used it for a pro photoshoot (even coverage), and the images came out very nice. There are still moments when I feel that I’m getting dull images. the lens doesn’t give me that “magic” feel.

But it’s also not an expensive wide angle. So it does what I need it to. Maybe some day I’ll spring for an expensive wide angle.

I love the metal construction yet it being lightweight. The AF is fast and quiet and the 14mm only has slight vignetting and barrel distortion. The center is sharp wide open; stopping down to f/4 resolves these issues.

I have it paired with my EOS R5 on a DJI RS2. The weight is so clutch during a wedding?I go with the R5 and this 14mm. Using 4K crop mode (5. 1K oversampled), I get a 22. 4mm FOV, no overheating (23.

98 and 29. 97fps), and no backache from doing gimbal work for 10 hours. My only ?gripe? is that I wish it were faster (f/1. 8 or even f/2. 0 would?ve been nice).

I bought this for a bit wider low end and a tad bit more reach than my Nikon 200-500. WOW, I’m super impressed by the long end of this lens. Usually a telephoto zoom degrades at the far end, but not with this beast.

Have no fear of any image degredation at 600mm. I’ve found F8 to be the sweet spot for this lens, however anything lower than F8 is awesome too. Get the USB adapter and set up your custom functions. To prevent any hunting on airshows, I set one custom mode to focus from 300meters to Infinity.

This gives a very shallow focus range, less movement and more tack sharp photos, none missed by hunting.

I rented this lens to try out to see if I liked it enough to buy and save money rather than buying the Nikon version. I had the opportunity to photograph a theater performance with it. Using a Nikon D850, I found the autofocus to be incredibly inconsistent using only the F2.

8 aperture. Many of the shots I took came out just slightly out of focus. When they did show in focus, they were tack sharp and looked as I hoped they would. I’ve shot theater for 10 years and never had a lens this inconsistent.

By contrast I shot the same performance the next day with my Nikon 70-200 F4 and had great results as I usually do. Maybe the Tamron would do better on a D5 or sports body, or maybe it’s just not great in inconsistent lighting, or maybe I’m not the photographer I think I am! Either way, I’m glad I rented before buying.

TL;DR: I settled on this lens because you get a fantastic IQ for the price. I would recommend it to others. Some background. My friend let me borrow the Nikon 70-200 f/4 for testing purposes. I was very impressed by the lightning-fast focus, sharpness, lightweight body, and OS.

That was an excellent lens! However, I also enjoy taking portraits and low light nature pictures and craving more light and shallower DOF. My experience with the Tamron is from a Nikon d780 shooting hummingbirds, portraits, and a few landscapes during hikes in dry climates/cities.

For these purposes, I have no complaints and would easily compare it to the Nikon 70-200 f4. The focus is fast/accurate, and the main reason for blurry shots is that I lose track of small subjects or some other user error.

Note that my copy came with a free Tap-in console, so it would have been easy to correct any focusing issues from the factory. The biggest drawback of this lens is that it is somewhat heavy (~1. 5kg) to carry around your neck.

The weight comes mostly from of the wide aperture in this zoom range and solid construction. I rarely use a tripod/monopod because I’m always moving around and was worried that the weight would be an issue.

However, after using this lens as a walking-around lens, I was happy to find that this is not a big issue. Note that all f/2. 8 lenses in this focus range have a similar weight. Thus, if this is an essential factor, you might want to consider an f/4 lens (~0.

9kg) or smaller. Enjoy.

Good: Small, light, compact, very sharp photos. Image stabilization works well. Lens retracts to make a very compact package. Not so Good: Lens retracts and you need to unlock and extend prior to use.

Process is fiddily and takes more time than I would like. This lens is slow at f/3. 5 to 6. 3. I would like to have a lens in this zoom range and weight that was faster to get ready to shoot with a much faster f-stop.

But the laws of physics have intervened. This lens and my Canon M5 is a light package that will be taken out of the bag much more often.

I am a Nikon enthusiast. I have been using Nikon cameras and lenses for over 30 years. I have been using D80 for many years. I was waiting for Nikon to come out with flip screen on the 7 series for a long time.

I decided to buy the camera for this feature plus 4K video and Wifi. Sad to say that I am less than impressed with this camera. In a nutshell, I could have spent my money better on a different product/camera.

It takes great stills but when it comes to take videos, the auto focus us slow to respond versus still photography, it’s cumbersome to change AF settings and Wifi is basically useless unless you use Snapbridge app.

You have to juggle with multiple dials to change AF settings in video mode. Even then, AF is slow to respond in close shots. It works fine for long shots though. You cannot connect D7500 directly to your computer/laptop using Wifi.

You need to first connect using Snapbridge. This makes Wifi function basically useless. There are some good features om this camera but they are useless foe me, therefore, I wouldn’t evaluate them.

I’m a photojournalist and wanted a compact, light, do-it-all lens to twist onto the front of my D3300 and carry with me when I’m riding my motorcycle. The 18-140 is much smaller and lighter than my 18-200 and I honestly don’t miss that extra 60mm on the long end.

It’s sharp even wide open and the VR feature works well. Since the D3300 has great high-ISO performance I can get by with the lens’ available apertures. I’ve only had it a month but I’ve already published several dozen images made with the 18-140.

Downsides: It’s a bit slower with autofocus than my pro glass and it’s definitely not something you want to bang around, especially when the barrel is extended. Also if you need extremely high resolution, say for a wedding, opt for the f2.

8 Nikkors instead. The body-lens combination with an SB400 flash fits in a small bag I carry when motorcycling. The outfit can handle just about anything I will encounter during motorcycle weather, which is to say no precipitation, decent light and anything that isn’t too far away.

I bought this lens after carefully reviewing test data for all available 150-500mm and 150-600mm supertelephoto zooms, and reviewing a lot of sample photos on Flickr. The Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6. 3 Di VC USD/Model A011N consistently ranked second behind the much more expensive Sigma 150-600mm Sports series lens, and ahead of other equally priced options.

When I received the lens I did around 500 test shots using a D810 body. Results are consistently better than published test data for this lens. Performance is best by far at the sharpness peak of f/8.

0 and the improvement at f/11. 0 is minimal, and this is consistent with most super telephotos in this class. The stabilisation works very nicely and allows shooting with a monopod at speeds as low as 1/100.

No problems observed with vignetting. Colour rendering is excellent, and contrast still very good at 600mm. Like all super-telephoto glass, this lens needs to be handled professionally to get best results – shooting wide open as many amatuers do will not produce the same quality as shooting at the peak performance point from f/8.

0 to f/11. 0. Overall I was very pleased with the lens that exceeded my expectations for sharpness, contrast and colour rendering performance.

Although I understand the meaning of the word “Refurbished” and the original product that has been refurbished can be a store display model, a returned model, an open box etc. The company doing the refurbishing is suppose to return the product to as new quality as when it left the factory.

So it should look and perform like a product off the factory floor. YOU STILL WONDER, about the quality of work the refurbishing company can provide. I took a chance and VERY HAPPY with the results. I’ve done a lot of research online comparing this lens with the Sigma equivalent.

Because my past experiences with Sigma have never lived up to my past experiences with Tamron lenses, I went with the Tamron. The amount of research I did also created questions as far as if this lens is capable of producing sharp images when shooting “Birds In Flight”.

Shooting static objects and getting sharp images in not the same as shooting a moving object and when it comes to moving birds, there’s a whole lot going on with flight pattern, wing movement, head movement, backgrounds, foregrounds etc to get all in focus! I have been more than plesanty surprised by the quality of images this lens has delivered so far.

Every day, with more practice and more experience with using this lens, the images are still continuing to improve! I had been shooting bird photos using an older Tokina 400mm f5. 6 close focus prime lens, and have been very happy with the results from that.

Wanting the extra 200mm of reach I decided to give this lens a shot and I am SO HAPPY I did! The images from this lens blows those taken with the Tokina out of the water! Clarity, sharpness, contrast, speed of focus, depth of field, all the checkmarks are in the Tamron’s boxes.

I’m sure there are better lenses and lenses that would be as big of an improvement over this Tamron as it’s been over the Tokina. HOWEVER I don’t have $12,000 PLUS to spend on those lenses! This is my most expensive lens to day, and it’s been worth every penny plus I spent on it.

I got this lens as a graduation present to myself for my masters degree. I was looking for a professional-grade lens where I could take wildlife photography. I study whales and other marine mammals so it is well worth the investment.

So far, I am in love with this lens. It is highly comparable to other lenses of this magnitude which cost 3-4X more. Here are some photos of a red fox I have shot with this lens. Would definitely recommend!! Super easy to use and the shots speak for themselves.

I have been using this lens for a little while now and it is fantastic! It’s surprisingly easy to focus eventhough it is a manual lens. Images come out incredible! Prior to this lens I’ve only used autofocus lenses and I don’t miss them whatsoever.

There are no aberrations or color fringing to be seen even when zoomed in to 8-1in Lightroom. I thought I might have issues getting sharp photos with sports but that hasn’t been an issue. I’ve shot racecars doing well over 100mph at night with poor artificial light and still got tack sharp images.

Portraits come out beautiful especially at f1. 4 even better at about f2 if you like more details in the skin. It works fantastic for night and low light Photography as well. This lens literally didn’t leave my camera from the day it arrived until I received the 135mm f2.

This lens turned me into a huge Samyang fan boys! I’m looking forward to using their other lens offerings as well. Don’t hesitate to buy this lens it’s worth way more than it’s selling price!.

If you are going to pay for a top shelf zoom lens, this is the range to splurge on. I tried for weeks to find cheaper options, but ultimately decided that this was going to be the workhorse on my A99.

The build quality and image quality have been impressive and as-advertised. The sturdy metal hood is a nice touch. Some reported that the lens is excessively heavy, but it seems very manageable to me on my A99, and I hike with it.

One small knock would be the lack of a zoom lock. The lens often extends completely while I hike around with it at my side. I also wish it was environmentally sealed. However, those are small issues.

You should bite the bullet and buy this lens if you have a professional Sony body to match. I also splurged on the Sony 75-400G for about the same price this last year. For image quality and usability, this lens has been a much better value.

I am a non-traditional professional photographer, primarily taking habitat monitoring photos while hiking or flying for my wildlife consulting business.

I rented this lens, because a shoot came up and I needed some superior images. I wasn’t sold on all the type of the Zeiss lenses. I was have severe buyers remorse for buying my A65, as the images just haven’t lived up to my expectations, and was seriously considering trading it in on a Canon.

I got this lens and tested it out and the image quality, just screwing around was astounding, Great contrast, superior colors, ultra clear images with incredible detail. When I put it to task during my shoot it did NOT disappoint.

The lens is almost TOO perfect. Was shooting some model portraits, and the lens easily picked up their generous use of makeup. lol The lens is HEAVY!!!, I’d be willing to argue it weighs real close to the same as my Sigma 170-500mm lens.

I LOVED the focus hold button. Really comes in handy. Someone also shooting the event had a 5D mark3 with l-series lenses, and the image quality with the 24-70 beat those out. Very impressive lens. I never thought I would say this about a lens that cost almost $2k, but its worth every cent!!! The ONLY time the auto focus wasn’t spot on was shooting Indy Cars at top speed, through a tiny window, where in one second there was bare track, and the next 1/10th of a second the farm was filled with a car whizzing past you at 190mph or more.

had to switch to manual focus then and that fixed the problem, but it did the task a few times, but it did struggle.

Extremely well made this 24-70 f2. 8 Zeiss is my first “professional” lens that isn’t a Nikon or Canon. It compares very well in terms of build and image quality and in use even feels a little better made.

It’s early days yet as I’ve only had it for a month so I can’t say if image quality is on an even par with those two main competitors but initial impressions are very good – it focuses quickly (on my a99) and images look very sharp.

With Sony’s built in sensor shift image stabilisation (which also works fantastically) I have a more compact lens than the Nikon 24-70 f2. 8 VR, and Canon have nothing to match it. I am very glad I purchased this lens and can highly recommend it.

Value for money? Since the mark 2 version came out this original version is available at a price too good to miss but in general I find Sony’s professional lens are more expensive than either Nikon or Canon so I feel Sony should reevaluate their pricing to be more competitive, and thereby encourage more buyers.

I use the Samyang 35mm F1. 4 lens on my Sony A7r via a ‘dumb’ adaptor. The images it produces are very sharp when properly focused and the falloff and background bokeh is excellent. The images have a character which is different from my Zeiss lenses but not necessarily better or worse.

The images are quite pleasing. Physically the lens is very well built. The focus throw is just the right length and is very smooth to rotate. This results in easy and quick focusing however a little bit of practice is required.

On the negative side the aperture ring is quite small and because of its location, I sometimes had trouble finding it it. A slightly forward location or even perhaps a different texture would make it a lot easier to use.

At any price this is an excellent lens and is well recommended. However to get this kind of quality at 1/3 or less the price of a similar lens from a mainstream brand is simply astonishing.

This is my fifth Rokinon / Samyang lens but this one is not tested yet. It’s my second cinema lens, & looks perfect. * One of the others is an automatic focusing lens for Sony, 35mm f1. 4, and I have the brick for firmware updates.

* I’ve had good luck with ‘Elite Brands’ lenses and with an old history in manual photography, have no problem with that. My digital cameras provide highlight colour focus confirmation. * Good to deal with B&H.

This heavily built lens is a wonderful step up from my two kit lenses. It gives a much crisper image than my Canon 18-135mm zoom lens, and provides better bokeh than either that or my 70-300mm zoom lens.

However, no matter the f-stop, the image is slightly hazy when you zoom in while post-processing. While certainly my clearest lens yet, none of the photos I’ve taken so far with this lens are crystal clear.

It’s a great price for a prime lens, and overall, I recommend! Pros: – great bokeh – manual aperture ring, with stops between each number – crisp images Cons: – Manual-only focus – images crisp, but not crystal clear – some problems with lens flare when shooting into the light.

SUMMARY In addition to this lens, I have owned the Nikon 80-200mm f2. 8 ED, the Nikon 80-200mm f2. 8 AF-s, the Nikon 70-200mm f2. 8 VR, and have used the Sigma f2. 8 EX. This lens is on-par for sharpness with the Nikkor glass, and far better than the Sigma, which is a mess in terms of aberration and distortion at the extremes.

I prefer it to all of the other lenses, including the Nikon VR. I got mine for about $400 used-if you shoot weddings or events, this is a must-have piece of glass. PROS Optical quality – Comparable to the Nikon 70-200mm f2.

8 VR Ease of use – the push/pull manual focus function is wonderful, with live view and this lenses ability to close focus, I rarely pull out my macro lens for anything but ring shots at a wedding, or if I find a weird insect or something.

Price – Pretty obvious, here. Yes, you give up VR, but when shooting people, I am generally keeping my shutter speed above 1/160 anyhow. Anything else, I’m on a tripod. I’d love the VC version, but I can’t justify the expense.

Get a Black Rapid or similar strap and carry by the tripod collar! Autofocus performance – Tends to hunt in low light, slower than the Nikons, but better than the Sigma.

Autofocus – Doesn’t always nail focus, especially has trouble with eyes on a full-length subject. When it nails it, it’s magic. I just have to be vigilant.

As a portrait and lifestyle photographer, my go to lens is my 85mm because of the beautiful bokeh and the focal length but I do keep a large variety in my camera bag. I also shoot a lot of sports photos for the local high school (my dad is the athletic director) so I had a 70-300mm to get right in the action.

Recently, that old lens of mine has been slower and showing it’s age and usage so I started shopping around to replace it. I always wanted a wider aperture for those night time football games and this is perfect! I haven’t used any of my other lenses since I got it! It’s been great for outdoor and studio portraits AND all those action shots! It’s fast and works perfectly with the auto focus on my camera.

I’m so happy I added this to my collection!.

Use this lens predominately for my kids’ sports, and it does a great job for the price. The focus is not quite as fast as some of the high-end lenses, but for me, that particular characteristic was not worth 2-3 times the price, and I feel like I get fantastic results for my purposes.

Fast action shooting is great – able to capture individual laces on a spinning baseball from 20-30 yards away. Great depth of field in the photos, as well. I have paired this lens with my Sony a55, and the combo work very well together (again, for my purposes).

The lens itself is beefy, with what I consider to be good weight to it. To me, it gives the impression that the lens is more durable or well-built than a flimsy little featherweight lens, but that’s just me, and the extra weight just doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

Excellent lens at this price point.

Buy this lens for its light weight, small size, and useful range. It is pretty good all the way to about 135mm. Racked out fully, I found it hard to focus sharply on small details that I was reaching for.

I have used this lens with both the EM1-iii and Pen F with the same result. However, there is no other better option I have found for a small, light kit with this kind of range. Some compromise has to be expected.

For casual snapshots and people pictures it is a lens you will likely use a lot, and you are likely to use it simply because you are willing to carry it. The useful hood can be stored on the lens in reverse to save space in the bag or pocket.

This lens represents a remarkable value. It’s sharper than I expected, especially when closed down one or two stops. My copy gets sharper zooming past about 70mm, and seems to stay fairly sharp all the way to 150.

I wouldn’t expect it to hold up under any kind of rough treatment, or bad weather. It’s also very light weight. If you can work with the limitations (in particular the small max aperture) it’s well worth having.

I have no doubt that the Olympus Pro zoom is better, but I’m not sure yet how invested I want to be in this system, so for me this is a good compromise. The photos shown are taken from the extreme corner of the frame, from left to right they are at 40mm f5, 40mm f7.

1, 96mm f4. 9, and 96mm f6. 3; all were taken with a tripod mounted camera. No post processing done, other than Lightroom’s conversion to DNG and then to JPG. I am no expert at lens testing! These show that my copy has pretty noticeable loss of sharpness in corners even stopped down at 40mm, but things get better at longer focal lengths.

I plan to keep this in mind when using this lens.

One of the lenses to which I’d give a give star rating with no hesitation or second thought. It combines all good qualities and leaves out almost all bads, making it an amazing choice for those that seek a cheap (cheap?) zoom with constant and rather bright aperture.

The 28mm end isn’t much narrow for you to wish to have 24mm while 75 would better have been 85 to be able to do portraits – but, well, 75 works decent enough. If you don’t know what will come across you, this lens is the one to mount and go.

It is sharp enough to resolve enough details for a 36-42mp sensor, colors and contrast are right, aberrations are pretty fine (even if not the best), and fringing is generally well controlled. At the wide end, wide open it works better than many lenses, except probably 24-70 for ff cameras and 18-35 for apsc cameras, which is a very welcome feature.

At the narrow end it still shines, meaning it is useful throughout the zoom range. Highly recommended!.

This is a great budget mid-range zoom that is f2. 8 all the way through the zoom range. When wide open, some of the sharpness degrades, but if you back it down to f4, it’s super sharp. F2. 8 is usable, but not as good as lenses that cost 5 times as much.

It’s one of those lenses that a lot of people overlook because it’s not wide on a crop sensor, and it doesn’t zoom too far at the top end. I will use this a lot for shooting high school basketball and volleyball for yearbook, where a mid-range zoom is very usable.

You can probably use it for portraits, but it will not be as sharp as your primes.

This lens does the job well. I use it for Milky Way shots and nature and the center sharpness is very good. It does not have the best focus but there are ways to make it work easily such has using Photopills to focus at the hyperfocal.

Overall very very good lens for the price. I recommend it!. It also arrived from Japan to Canada very fast and it was in MINT condition.
