20 Best Leash For Small Dogs (2023 Updated)

This leash seemed like a great choice at first. We intentionally got a leash designed for a much larger dog since our Shiba Inu is quite strong and this one seemed up to the task. It was sturdy and well built and the leash accessory conveniently slid easily into the slot on the leash and stayed snuggly.

However, after only two uses, our Shiba Inu pulled on the leash, and normal pressure from the wrist holding the leash pushed the accessory further down into the slot causing the accessory to pry the two halves of the leash mechanism apart.

The accessory acted like a perfect wedge popping open the handle and causing the whole leash to unspool and pull free. My husband was able to grab the dog and the leash and reassemble everything but the leash doesn’t lock or unlock properly anymore and the two halves come apart with little effort.

This is a great retractable leash! We just bought our second one after having this one for over a year. The locking mechanism works wells, and the tape is sturdy and thick. We had a different brand before this one, and it was made cheaply- the tape was thin and got tangled up easily.

This type of leash is NOT meant for leash training- I just wanted to point that out for the negative reviews that say it doesn’t work for leash training. A non-retractable short leash (we used 6ft. ), along with a harness, is what you need for leash training.

We use this retractable leash, along with a harness, now that our pup is a lot better trained. Also, Chewy is amazing at quick delivery- it came the next day!.

Prior to purchasing a flexi leash, I had tried 3-4 other retractable leash brands and ALL of them broke in under a month. The last Flexi I bought was THREE YEARS ago and it just now needed to be replaced.

That is a really amazing life span, in my opinion. The cord itself isn’t even broken, the protective fabric around it it frayed and clogged up in the holder. It’s frayed because of my dog running around trees and such so I don’t blame the manufacturer at all.

The leash is so strong against my big dog and I can give him 16ft of freedom at any time! People complain about the handle part or there not being a poop bag holder… then buy a different leash that suits your needs… this leash is amazing! 100% worth every penny.

The sections of the leash are joined with a metal ring. This really helps, if one dog pulls, the other dog isn’t pulled along and the force goes to the person holding the leash. I can pick up the small dog and still have a good sized leash to walk the larger dog.

This was my first time ordering from Wilderdog and I couldn’t be happier with my purchases! I bought my three pups new collars, leashes, **** bag holders, the **** carrier, a rope keychain and a Sherpa blanket.

All three collars and leashes are extremely durable very attractive and I love that one of the collars is reflective. I am absolutely obsessed with the “**** carrier” tool, it’s my favorite thing to bring on hikes because I hate carrying around a bunch of dog **** on longer hikes.

I really like the Sherpa blanket as well and I actually stole it from my dogs to use myself. When they say this blanket is waterproof, they mean waterproof. You can dump water on this blanket and it just pools on top, I love it! Would definitely recommend every product that I tried.

We initially purchased the 5’ Islander reflective leash that matches the turquoise harness. The harness fits our Darcy beautifully and we additionally love the strength and safety aspects of this attractive leash.

We specifically purchased the reflective leash for our early morning or night walks but now use it all the time! We quickly chose to order the 10’ leash as well for our longer walks. They are both wonderful! Love Wilderdog products! (Also purchased the waterproof blanket and Darcy loves it!).

We have a small very strong very sweet and very reactive athletic tan dog the looks like a mini Mountain Feist! This dog sometimes reacts with amazing forceful jumping twisting and turning if she sees another dog across the street.

We therefore needed RUFFWEAR to hold her. This leash is not Ruffwear brand—but it is strong and sturdy!.

Collar fabric and color are good; I ordered orange/melon color and is nicely subtle. Light reflection is good. Size adjustment slips and constantly has to be adjusted. This was disappointing and there’s room for improvement.

This collar is a good value and serving its purpose for our quickly growing Labrador. Probably won’t repurchase when he grows out of this one as we’ll need a more reliable collar for a very active dog.

This is my second Blueberry leash (mine is neon green to match my pooch’s collar). I think the quality is quite good, but I did have a strange thing happen with my last one. After a few years – maybe 3 – a part of the metal connector at the end of the leash broke off.

It was the little metal nub that opens and closes the connector. Leash and collar have worn very well. except for the metal part. And the metal seems fairly heavy-duty. Go figure. I’m going with: This is a fluke (unless I hear of similar problems people might have had.

Personalization was small. Why did they not make the letters taller and thicker. My dog only has a three letter name. The handle on the leash is a loop that is glued not sewn. Overall very disappointing and this was purchase as a gift for my grandpuppy☹️.

My dog’s leash had gotten SO SOILED, but her harness was fine. This not only picked up the color of the harness, it has lighthouses which I love, and sailboats, which recognize the coast where I live.

This leash has quickly become my new favorite for walks! The length is about perfect for my miniature schnauzer and the build quality is great. The metal clip is, admittedly, a bit on the larger side for a small dog, but it it is lighter-weight than you would expect so I have no complaints/concerns.

But what I love most about this leash is the material that it is made out of. It has a little bit of give/elasticity to it which was a nice surprise. This is the first 4′ leash I have owned, and I will admit I was surprised at how useful it was/how much I enjoyed it.

The shorter length may not be the best length for every outdoor activity (i. e. potty breaks in snowy Minnesota), but it is ideal for our daily walks.

This is a very nice leash. It looks nice, but more importantly, it has several great features. First, the 4′ length is great for keeping my dog close to me. Secondly, the fabric is slightly stretchy so it gives a bit if my dog starts to pull.

The handle is comfortable to hold. There is a loop for holding doggie pick-up bags if you use them. My only reason for giving this four stars instead of five is that clip that attaches to the leash, while very sturdy, is pretty heavy for my 20 pound beagle.

For a small dog, I think this could be a little smaller and function just as well.

I’ve been using this lash for a few weeks now and have really enjoyed it. It is soft so it feels good to hold. It is made from a bungee material so it has a little give (without being too much) when my small dog gets excited and tries to pull.

For bigger dogs that aggressively pull it might not be enough give. It has a D-ring at the top so you can attach a bag dispenser. The only down side for me is that it doesn’t have a traffic loop. But with the 4 fort length and the softness it’s easy to hold the leash tighter when there’s cars near by.

The description says waterproof, but the first day we used it puppy got in the salt water swimming pool for about 30 minutes. By the time we started cleaning up the pool area the metal buckle pet had rusted to the point of being unusable and had to be trashed.

If salt water is not in your dogs future I’m sure it’s a fine leash.

This is an excellent leash! I bought the same one for my dog but i wouldn’t recommend it for little dogs. The bigger the collar is the best for this leash because it helps really attach the collar. But since little dogs don’t have such a big thick collar its more difficult.

Very cute (pink) but VERY small; probably perfect for a child. The larger one was only pennies more, felt much more sturdy, and I had regrets in getting the smaller one. Get the larger one…. ; )

Excellent leash. This is durable and pretty hardy, however is a bit on the narrow side and is not recommended for a strong-pulling dog. Despite being chewed half way through the narrow width, the leash never actually broke for another week before I could get a replacement.

Would definitely recommend this product for quality and value for price.

For the price, perfect. My dog chews on this leash, so it’s unravelled in a few places, but otherwise, it’s great. The right weight and size, and length. And great price.

Love this lead. We bought one each for our mini schnauzers (1yr & 2yrs old) very versatile with the three lengths. Feels solid enough in the hand for their small bodies (4. 5kg and 7. 5 kg dogs) but much lighter than other long leads so the dogs barely notice them on.

It’s been great for when we do recall, walking and ‘parking’ training.

I purchased this leash in conjunction with the EZYDOG Harness. Waggle were super quick with next day delivery. This leash is the best i have ever seen. My puppy German Shepherd chewed straight through her old cheaper leash.

This particular leash is extremly tough, durable and a genius design. For routine walks on footpaths the leash doubles and is shortened giving you more control and safer. When walking in open parks its genius loop system allows you to extend it to two meters giving my pup plenty of room to sniff and explore her surroundings and makes walking fun.

I bought a red version of this lead for my 2 yr old sprollie when she was a pup. She was a landshark and had bitten it in several places – so, despite hanging in there, it looked a little worse for wear.

Still usable though – it’s a TOUGH lead! So I have bought a new one. It’s the ideal length to clip around your waist and have the other end around your neck when not in use. It’s also the ideal length for my puppy to be on lead and run along besides my ebike.

It’s also easy to unclip and reclip around a tree when she needs to wait while I nip in a shop. Great product. I like the elastic section too – it helps remind my pup to walk to heel without her pulling my arm out of its socket.

The item is very well made, withstanding razor puppy teeth, has a very comfortable handle. Very useful clip for multi way use and adjustable length. Strong and easy clip attachment and good for field walks for dog to explore.

HOWEVER, PERSONALLY, it’s not my favourite for a steady and controlled heel walk. The shortest length is too long for walking in streets/ around other people, I have to fold it 2/3 down to have dog close to me (and shes a short puppy!).

The elastic shock absorber further prevents control of the dog – particularly training giddy puppies.

This is handy to keep my 5 month old Belgian Malinois puppy under control if there are lots of distractions as I walk around the park. Much easier than carrying a 10 metre training lead around and her pulling me along.

I have a slip lead but I tend to keep that for shorter walks and training. She doesn’t constantly pull with this one.
