I previously was buying Purina Layena +Omega3. The hens loved it. I switched to this product and quickly noticed two things about it. The pellets are larger. Maybe no big deal although I viewed the previous (smaller) pellets as perhaps being more easily taken down by the hens.
Secondly our egg production went down. Perhaps this is to be expected at first when changing the hens diet? Time will tell if egg production bounces back. I plan to stick with this feed for the foreseeable future since it is more economical.
I do like the Purina brand in general, nice clean pellets and no excessive dust.
I will go out of my way, in the rain, with a broken-down truck, wearing flipflops and my PJ’s to purchase the Purina Layena Crumbles for my chickens. I started on big box store chick crumbles and switched to Purina once they started laying.
One day on the way home I get a call that we are out of chicken food. There was a terrible rain storm going on and I decided it was easier to stop and get a couple of bags of the box store brand than stopping at my local feed store to get the Layena; no big deal right? Grab some ‘layer’ food and hit the door.
Within the first 2 weeks, I gave away the box store brand food and went and got my Purina crumbles. and learnt my lesson. The shells were the first thing we noticed, just collecting them we had more breaks than we had ever had for the entire first year when they were on a strictly Purina diet.
Picking them up you could easily push your thumb through the soft shells; something that never happened to us before. The yokes, although darker and richer than store bought, was something we didn’t notice until after we switched back to the Purina.
they were nowhere near the quality of the Purina yokes. We laughed at ourselves for being such tools, and my laziness to get substandard food. The Purina Crumbles is our goto. from here on out! For the people who will argue that it may cost a little more than some of the other foods – I can only say this, sell a carton of eggs and offset the cost – it’s worth the money, it’s that easy.
Just over 5 years ago I obtained my first flock that came with everything, coop to feed. The feed was generic and being my first, I wanted better so I bought my first bag of Purina but in crumbles due to a special hen.
After she passed i began buying Purina Layena pellets and still do today. I get lots of strong shelled eggs, which is very important especially since I often sell them. Even my 3 1/2 year old sexlinks are still laying quite well, 3 – 4 eggs weekly.
Now, I’m not going to lie, I’ve had to buy generic due to low funds and saw a near immediate reduction in not only quantity but in shell hardness. However, within 2 – 3 days of switching back, egg production was up and back to same hardness.
If you read the labels on other brands including generics, they say to add oyster shell or other calcium supplement but the Purina Layena pellets say right on the label OYSTER STRONG and no need to add extra calcium supplements.

I love this nesting box, super easy to maintain, was easy to assemble and mine came with all the necessary hardware plus some. Even the lumber was straight and ore drilled although I read conflicting reviews about the lumber (and hardware for that matter).
Had worked well for me so far, only downside is its hard to clean if your box is exposed to the elements like mine. Whenever I get leaves in it during the fall, or filth, you have to manually lift out all of the bottoms to get everything clean.
That is also a positive that you have this ability to do so, but it would have been nice if the pans were perforated or had a lipped area so you could use a hose to simply wash everything towards the back.
Just my opinions, otherwise I think for the price and longevity and not having to engineer a nesting box of my own, this was a good solution. Highly recommend, will outlast the wood coop and the chickens for sure.
I ordered this chicken nest a little over a month ago and I’m very pleased about the overall cost, ease of assembly and it was exactly what I expected and needed. The chickens were curious at first but eventually took to it and are using the entire nest.
I am completely satisfied and would consider ordering again if and when needed.
package is heavy. just a heads up. my wife wasn’t able to move it. got it opened up and the first thing you notice is a lot of assembly is required. don’t let the amount of nuts and bolts scare you away though.
assembly takes about 45 min. once together it is a pretty nice piece of equipment. you will notice that the bottom trays on one side are a lot more loose that the rest but it will be fine. the price is a little high in my opinion.
especially since it is just stamped sheet metal. but it looks good and gets the job done. you can tell it will be the one thing in you coop that actually lasts.

Ugghhh, we used to love this brand but over time we found more ends of the mill “dust” than grain. Also, I highly suspect our girls were not getting enough vitamins & minerals, it just went from bad to worse with molting & seasonal changes.
Hard rough molts, hardly any of our girls laid consistently and they became under weight. Although we free range, all girls are protected from wildlife yet they never seemed to thrive on this food. We tried fermenting it but that caused vent gleet in a couple of our girls, enough was enough.
We changed to Kalmbach henhouse reserve – what a difference! Molt this year was easy, we have had some laying during the winter, (we do not use supplemental light) eggs & their shells are much better quality and the girls are now at a great weight.
I really wanted to love this feed. I did a ton of research and because our hens are pets and we want them to live a long, happy life, I wanted to feed them a soy free (less chance of certain cancers), whole seed food.
I feared that they might pick out the seeds and not eat the powder, which contains all the vitamins and minerals. I fed this food for about 6 weeks. My girls ate it with great happiness. They tossed it everywhere and made a huge mess.
But they seemed to really enjoy it. With that said, their eggs decreased in quality and then quantity. Then, one of my sweetest hens got super mean. I switched back to Kalmbach Organic crumbles and after about a week on Kalmbach, everyone is normal again.

I’ve used S&P Free Layer a couple times over the year when my preferred feed was out. I like that its organic and you can tell what’s in it. Its not a leftover of another process like a “grain product”.
Who knows what that is, right? Anyway, the girls love the whole grains and go nuts emptying the feeders, BUT what remains are the minerals and supplements! They don’t eat all of it, picking out the good stuff.
Even after putting it back through the feeders, it never gets completely eaten. I noticed lots miss-fires and soft shelled eggs when they transitioned to 100% S&P. I’m sure that’s ’cause they aren’t eating all the calcium and mineral “dust” in the feed.
Once they were transitioned back to their regular Non-GMO pelleted feed, the soft shelled eggs went away and production went back up.

First off, it is small. but that was expected due to reading the measurements before purchasing. What sold me is the functionality and design of this coop over the others. I ordered 2 coops with plans of having 2 hens in one coop for eggs and 2 hens and 1 rooster in the other for reproduction.
I would not recommend more than 3 chickens per coop. I received the 2 coops just one business day after ordering which was the fastest I have ever gotten a delivery without paying for it. When opening the box, everything looked confusing, but there is literally ONE instruction sheet (front and back) that makes it very simple! I had both coops together within an hour.
Everything lined up perfectly and every angle was very precise on both coops. I was impressed! The paint is nice and adds a touch of class instead of just a wooden chicken coop sitting in your yard. Now, this is what I’ve done to make it even better.
I braced the roosting stick inside of the coop with screws from the outside. I also braced the nesting box with a few extra screws as well just in case. Make sure to pre drill your holes as to not split the wood! Everything was very sturdy before I made these adjustments, but over time I’d rather be safe than sorry.
I also added a treated 2 x 4 boarder around the bottom perimeter to life the coop up off of the ground to keep the bottom of the frame from getting wet and rotting. Lastly, although it says it’s weather treated, I put a weatherproof sealant on the entire coop myself.
I feel better knowing that these cool little coops will last longer for me now that I’ve made these adjustments. I would DEFINITELY recommend getting these if you’re looking for something for a few chickens!.
The coop is well priced. It arrived early. We had to put three coats of paint per piece per side to seal it. The roosting bar needs to be reinforced. The predrilled holes on the roof didnt line up and we had to use extra.
Its been through one rain, water got into the roof of the nesting box and there is a bubble. We have small girls right now and they fit ok. I would recommend three or less. I really love the cage under the coop.
It is spacious and it gives them more overall room. I would not buy it again.

absolutely love this book, if you own chickens you should have this book. great,great,great. i would recommend this book to the beginner as well as the expearianced chicken hobbiest. i pick this book up every time i walk by it, i find myself reading it over and over agian even though i know whats in it i still want to read it agian.

This book is excellent for the person who is starting out on the wonderful journey of owning chickens. It covers everything from building their home to clipping their wings. It has beautiful photos of common breeds as well as some of the more rare breeds.
It tells you can and can not feed them as well as how to prevent disease. I highly reccomend this book for people with children, it is a good all round “How to” book.

I am really, I really impressed with this feed! The only thing that I wish is that Farm and fleet carried the all flock maintenance version as well since I have non-layers in my flock. However, this mix is comprable or perhaps even better than Scratch N Peck brand that I had been getting for about twice the price.
It’s awesome that we can get this feed from Farm & fleet and also avoid the shipping costs by doing pickup in store or shopping in the store! My chickens and ducks absolutely loved it, and I’m really looking forward to also fermenting it during the summer months.
I would do it all year long because it reduces my feedbill significantly, but I just don’t have a warm place to do it through the cold months. I’ve even used this as a scratch grain because it’s just as delicious to the birds yet doesn’t bring down the calorie or nutrition value like some scratch mixes do.
When I mixed it into the Kalmbach layer pellets which are also fantastic by the way, the chickens would go for the grains first and then devour the pellets. They ate both very well, and I look forward to buying both.
The eggs we’re getting our amazing, strong shells, bright orange yolks, and great flavor. Again, the only thing I wish is that they carried the all flock version, but I’m very happy with this brand. Especially given that I had tried the cheaper Agrimaster all flock, but the low percentage of protein made our eggs very delicate.
The shells were totally fine, but the yolks would break almost every time.
Henhouse Reserve is unbelievable. Even older hens have once again started laying big beautiful eggs regularly. You’ll also feed less because it’s rich & satisfying. The entire flock (roosters, too) go crazy at feeding time.
Everyone’s feathers are glossy. My farm help inhaled the bag’s wonderful aroma & jokingly asked if I had any granola— they might dig in.
This is a beautiful mix of food, My chickens really love it and come running for it. They eat every bit of it, even the little pellets. It is quite a bit more expensive here at Chewy then my feed store though.

This is an amazing product. I’m using it for 2 rabbits. It’s super easy to access all the parts for cleaning, there’s plenty of space for the rabbits and multiple hay/litter boxes, some toys and tunnels etc.
The rabbits are really happy in there, it’s very good to access the rabbits too as they tend to come to the top box for feeding, then you can slide the door shut and trap them in there so you can grab them and handle them etc.
It looks very sturdy and well made, it doesn’t look out of place in my garden. The wire is a little weak and I’m not sure how fox proof it would be for chickens, luckily I’m in a rather foxless area and the coop is right outside my back door against the wall and under a patio roof so relatively safe.
By far the best coop/hutch I’ve owned or seen, extremely practical and great size and design for the animals. It also lets a lot of light in and the top is sturdy and good for storing things on top of (I have a rabbit carrying case and some hay bags etc up there in a storage box) Definitely recommend for rabbits/guinea pigs.
Great Coop & Run. We keep 3 silkies in this. They roam free by day in our garden, but if they don’t through winter, I wont feel so bad. Enough space for them in here. Good build quality. Easy to pop together.
Takes an hour or two with a drill. Caging decent quality, wood decent quality, screws good quality. Be aware holes for the screws in the roof are already there. Took me a while to realise they were pre-drilled.
Just hard to see. Also roof over the run area doesn’t open up. But no biggie. Good value for money! To save the wood for longer and ensure your chickens don’t become chicken dinner, consider bedding a timber rectangle into the soil and screwing your coop and run onto it.
I was slightly hesitant when I read some reviews, but when it came I was surprised at how easily and quickly I assembled it on my own (I am 76). I bought it to keep quail in and it is ideal for this purpose.
Negative point water can get into the nest boxes but a plastic runner soon solved this. For quail you cannot have the whole roof lifting as one, for if they are in the coop they can fly out and if they are in the run they can also do so.
I did not join the roof as one but left it in the two sections, one over the coop the other over the run, problem solved. I have 16 day old quail in the coop, with a 12 inch 40 watt tubular heater in, temp is at 25 to 30 degree centigrade.
On sunny spells I let them out into the run (which is on grass) and they come back in when I want them to, also the water and food is in the coop, another reason for them do do so. This coop and run is Ideal for my purpose, anyone wanting a superior product can do so but at a much higher price.

I must say I was on the fence of ordering this as it seemed over priced for something so simple. I even looked at building my own version. I took the chance and tried it anyway. Now I see why it was so much.
A lot of thought and engineering went into this product. While simple in its function it does so because of the design. It has made things even better for an already great product. I’m glad I took the chance.
Best thing ever!! No more broken, eaten or poopy eggs. The hens adjusted to it super fast and the timer makes the whole operation pretty carefree. It was definitely pricey, but over time the convenience and eggs saved will make it worth it.
I certainly have no regrets. It is a really solid design and my 14 year old son was able to put it together by himself without issue.
We purchased the small for new flock of birds. We are throughly pleased with how this Best Nest Box and Perch Popper are working. Would we buy another one? Yes we would without hesitation. Box goes together very easy with no issues as instructed.

Decent value for the price and seems to be fairly sturdy. I have 3 hens and a rooster and it’s a good size for them, but I wouldn’t suggest keeping any more than maybe 5 chickens in this coop. The description says up to 12 chickens, but you will definitely not get 12 chickens in here.
We bought this coop as we were tearing down the old one, and I needed somewhere to keep them before the new one gets built. This is a good starter/temporary coop but probably not a super long-term solution.
Very easy to put together. Make sure it’s on level ground so the door opens and closes easily. I personally don’t think it’s big enough for 12 chickens. Maybe 6. I have 4 mature hens and they have plenty of room, but I wouldn’t think of adding anymore if you want them to have space to walk around.
I’ve also added a dog playpen to the side of the coop with the door so they have a huge open run when I’m sitting outside with them. Will be buying another when we add pullets to our flock of 4 hens!!!.
