20 Best Lawn Mower For Hills (2023 Updated)

HI bought this in April-May 2021. In less than a year, two bolts and nuts which connect the handle bar and the machine body were loosen. We’ve tried out best to put them back put the space was so small for any tools, and they’ve continuously come off!!! We hardly use it for 8 months for a very small yard (not use it at all from Nov ’21 – Feb -22) and now it is useless!!! These bolts and nuts were pre-installed already when the machine was delivered.

Greenworks should do a better job with quality controls. I’ve bought all Greenworks lawn mower/trimmer/leaf blower for one of my houses and will never ever buy this brand again in the future. Very frustrated.

This lawn mower works as well as I could’ve hoped. I was concern it would not be powerful enough to cut through the thicker sections of my lawn, which are sometimes just weeds. However, it has had no issues.

Even when I have left the lawn to grow longer than it should be, the mower powers right through in one pass. I have been using the mulching attachment and the mower chops up the cut grass to a nice fine almost paste like consistency.

Start-up is a breeze and getting use to the cord doesn’t take too long. I find it is best use the wrap provided and then pass the cord through one armpit, over your shoulders, and under the other arm pit to give some slack between where the mower is and where the cord falls.

As far as clean up goes, I just use a nylon utility brush to scrub the mulched grass off of the deck and a cloth to wipe any debris from the top. This only takes another couple of minutes and keeps everything running nice and smooth.

I hope this one holds up as well. I have about 2 acres to mow, mostly level with some gradual slopes. It took a while to get used to the dual transmissions and there are definitely sections where I have torn up the turf on the zero turn, but I’ve managed to find a way to make the turn and not do that when both wheels have traction.

It used to take me a couple hours and one stop for a refill with the John Deere. Now I do it all in about 50 minutes and no refills needed! My lawn looks fabulous. Now the stuff I don’t like so much – yes, it will tear up the turf if you aren’t careful, but I also have difficulty pulling the handles in to the same position.

Meaning, the right one takes more effort to get to the same place as the left. And if they’re not in the same relative position they don’t respond the same. I don’t like having to disengage the parking brake and then pull in the handles, because invariably I will move forward or backward a smidge while they’re being pulled in.

I’m on the fence about them not returning to a relative neutral position when no force is exerted on them (if you let go, some mowers will disengage the propulsion but not these). That comes in handy for me because I need to move tree branches out of the way sometimes.

Overall I love my new mower and I hope to continue loving it for another decade!.

It is a large and powerful mower, but the drivers pushed the mower in gear for about 45 yards, not knowing how much easier it would have been to push with the bypass linkage engaged.

I can only wonder how much damage this caused. The engine ran well but sound a bit off while operating it. The biggest problem I have is where the levers are located. I have ridden many zero turn mowers but none have had the steering control levers so far back on the machine.

I have adjust the levers and the seat and still I can’t go in full reverse without going into my midsection. It looks like at the base their is a bolt connecting the levers to the machine. Is there a way to move the levers forward on this bolt? I do like the knob tracking adjustment that evens out the levers while in full forward position.

Why isn’t there a fuel level indicator? I can’t recommend this product until the issues I have with it are resolved.

This review may be a tad premature since I have only owned this mower for 3 days, but on the first day I ran it 6 hours straight in grass that hadn’t been cut in two months. The terrain is semi rough, and I went thru almost two full tanks of fuel.

I would like to start by saying the housing on the mower is thick and solid, a much better product than the thin decks that rust out in just a few years. Not having a side discharge is a benefit I hadn’t expected, it allows you to go in any direction without building up cuttings ahead of you.

I am also not accustomed to the one pull no prime/choke fuel system, but it doesn’t take long to love that. I have never been a fan of self propelled lawnmowers because they have only one speed, this new variable speed drive is a game changer in my opinion.

This mower performs more like a commercial walk behind, than a standard residential push mower. The control is located in a comfortable location for thumb use or palm, and has more speed than you need if you want a good workout while mowing.

I use mine without the bagger attachment set on mulch, and the double blade set up cuts everything into small pieces so it breaks down twice as fast. All in all so far I am very impressed in this mower, and I have been cutting grass for over 50 years.

If I have to complain about anything, I would like to see a wider cutting deck, maybe a 36″.

Basic residential use on 20,000sqft yard, moderate hills. I was interested to see how the dual blade feature might work and I am disappointed. This mower leaves blades standing, even at low speed. I frequently mow over the front and side yards twice to get the missed grasses.

I use a generous overlap to allow for the coverage but still have to do this. Starts great like every Honda small engine I have ever owned. Rear wheel drive can really move this mower but the thumb pushbar can get awkward with your other fingers as it swings toward them on the bar grip.

The height adjustment is really well designed. One adjuster per set of wheels, and only on one side, makes this really easy to adjust and ensure you aren’t off level. The switch between bagging and mulching modes is nice and it works.

I don’t have to pull clumps of macerated grass from the bagging chute afterwards. Overall this is a good mower for the price. The dual blade gimmick is not worth any extra dollars as it has not shown to be any more effective than a higher horsepower mower with one blade.

You can tell the 216 is lower power, but if you don’t need to mow a severely overgrown yard it will get the job done.

I didnt buy this mower to use as a mower so much as to use as an electric cart to pull garden trailers with. I think it is somewhat underpowered as a mower, but I took the mower deck off and it makes an awesome electric cart!! No more fighting to start the gas engines when I stop and start frequently with trips around my couple if acres with utility wagons if some sort.

Fir my purposes it is fabulous! Very happy with it. And the batteries last a long time when not powering a mower.

I have cut seven foot weeds , blackberry briars, and grass. It is stronger than gas. More dependable and plenty of guts! Much better steering and the cruise control is wonderful. I got so tired of trying to start my chain saw that I bought electric.

Great move! So when my Craftsman rider messed up, over and over, I bought this. Best thing I have ever done. Now got to have an electric carand solar panels.

I owned a top of the line Honda many years ago when I owned my own home. To the best of my knowledge the mower is still running making it over 15 years old. I never had a problem with it while I owned it.

I currently rent and do the yard work for my land lord. I convinced him to buy a Honda and he did. The lawn had not been mowed all spring and the grass was ankle to knee deep. The mower had no problem with lesser height grass while using a 50:50 setting for bag and mulch function.

For the knee height grass I had to weed wack it down to a ankle height and then used the mower to finish it off which I expected. Now that the grass has mowed, I expect smooth sailing for the rest of the summer.

I bought the mower on 9/8/2021. At first I was excited and nervous because it was my first zero turn. It did take some time getting used to the controls and getting them adjusted. I get better every time I use it and I can’t wait till next year to mow the whole season.

So far it appears to be a solidly built machine, of course I have only used it 3 times this year. Based on my experience with this mower, I would have given it 5 stars but it has one problem that shouldn’t be a problem.

I can’t understand why a company that bases the service of their equipment on hours ran to not have a hour meter. I would have thought that this would be information that was provided to the customer before purchase.

It would have changed my mind I had known this was the case and yes I have had riding mowers before and they had hour meters. So, I only hope that there is not something else that should be on this mower that was not installed.

I hope that Cub Cadet understands by not providing this meter that they should be accountable for any damages that not having this meter causes to the components of the mower in the future. How would Cub Cadet suggest that I keep up with the maintenance of my machine without this hour meter or other form of knowing hours ran There is a question below that asks would I recommend this product to a friend and I will answer yes but I would tell this friend to make sure the one he/she purchases has some form of hour meter of service indicator.

I bought this to replace a 46″ tractor. I have a 1/2 acre to mow with quite a few obstacles and the dealer convinced me to get the Cub Cadet ZT1 42. After I brought it home it was obvious that I had to make some adjustments as the steering was not right, there was heavy vibrations with the mower deck engaged and there was no way to keep track of the engine hours and other small things.

After two day of messing with the steering, I got it to drive straight and turn as it should. I could not get the vibration to stop, purchased and installed an hour meter and read up on everything I needed to know.

I set up my cut height and started to mow. The vibration was very annoying. I adjusted the cut height a couple of times and found the right setting. My yard is uneven and I noticed light scalping here and there, My old tractor didn’t do that.

Needless to say, after cutting my yards once, this is not the right mower for me and my yard. I have too many obsatcles for a zero turn mower. The cut quality was not as good as my 12 year old mower, the vibrations were too bad, and all the adjusting I needed to do to get the steering right was just too much for me.

It is unfortunate, but I could not justify keeping the ZT1 42. I should not have all those issues at that price level. I tried calling Cub Cadet, hanging on the line and getting no response. I just took the ZT1 back.

This mower is a beast. I’ve had it for a few weeks now and I’m very happy. It feels large and powerful while also being agile enough for smaller areas. No one ever complains about the cut they get with a Cub Cadet, but what’s impressive is there is no loss of quality at top speed-HUGE time saver! It also handles some of the hillier parts of my yard with ease.

It has straightforward, easy to use/understand controls and everything just works. And as an added bonus – it’s definitely the coolest looking of all the mowers. For the price I would have loved to have the mulching kit included, but still I’m very pleased with this.

Wife and I purchased a new Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 50 to replace an aging Husqvarna Z4818 that served us very well (566 hrs). We have both mowed our 2 acres with the mower and feel we can provide a good early review.

Pros: Sturdy construction and good design – welded tubular steel frame is as solid as it looks. No flex at all; thus no metal fatigue. The deck is welded rather than stamped steel like the Husky. Although I would have liked a heavier gauge steel, it should be more than adequate for residential use.

Because the frame is so strong, there is no need for a lot of other structural sheet metal that makes cleaning difficult and inhibits cooling of transmissions. Asymmetrical front wheel alignment may be unique and allows you to cut closer to obstacles.

Paint quality seems excellent. Deck height adjustment provide small increments and very easy to set. Easy of handling – turning bars feel very good. Controls are very responsive and smooth. You soon forget you are driving the mower.

You just look where you want to go and it seems to go there on its own. I particularly appreciate the large rear tires. Power – 23 hp Kawasaki engine is more than adequate. We let the native grasses in a large area of our yard mature and set seed in the spring at which time the grass is very thick and 30″ high.

The new mower made a pass at 4. 5 (max deck height) and a second pass at 3. We cut at walking speed and full deck width with no bogging and excellent clearance of the cuttings. The engine didn’t change its tune at all.

Engine makes about the same noise and uses the same amount of gasoline as the B&S on the old Husky. Cons: Seat durability?: Seat is comfortable, but nothing special. It has softer foam padding and a pullover vinyl upholstery that may not be as durable as a molded seat.

Headlights: They are a nice feature, but one popped out of its opening when bumped by a tree limb. Glad they are there though. Final thought: We bought from a local family owned mower shop. It was great to meet them, and I know where I can buy belts, blades, and service as needed.

Big Box stores don’t need the money and won’t service the mower. Buy from your neighbors and at the same price.

So it’s been a year of using my mower. Would I buy it again ? Absolutely. Read a number of complaints about vibrations from the mower deck must be poor installation or unbalanced blades. I have had zero issues with vibration or any part of the mower.

I have 1 acre of grass tons of trees some flat areas some very steep areas and the mower exceeds all of my expectations. Does an excellent job cutting the grass(nice stripes). Did my oil change after 10 hrs of use last year and again the begining of this year no metal shavings visible from break in.

Dealership in Vernon BC(Timber Star) was awesome to deal with would highly recommend them as well. Only complaint hard to drink a beer while mowing with a skid steer but I’ve figured it out :).

Main problem with bagger that I bought with unit. Chute did not fit properly and destroyed it on 1st running mower. Very hard time finding the proper one but finally did on ebay. Mower tracked crooked to start off with but got adjusted after a little while.

Learning curve to figure out how to drive without tearing up lawn. Mower works great, cuts evenly and quick. Looking forward to a long lasting quality mower.

My husband (Garry) has had a difficult time mowing our yard with the push mower. He has has a tough time breathing and we purchased this mower. It would have to take him 3 hours and lots of resting to mow the back yard.

With this Toro he mows it in about 30 minutes. This is a God send. He was just diagnosed today with a type of lung cancer. So I will be learning how to mow with this great machine as well. He has only mowed twice, but I do enjoy watching him mow with this machine!.

This lawnmower was barely a year old and already broke. It worked fine the first 4 or 5 times I used it then it started having trouble idling. I managed to get through a few more mows before it finally conked out in the middle of one.

THAT was just the beginning of my problems. I did some routine maintenance and tried to pull start it and the pull cord broke! So I called my repairman who came over and fixed the cord – $65. But he could not get the mower to start and idle.

So he cleaned out the carb and still no luck. So he had to order a new carb and replace the old one. ONE YEAR! That’s how old this mower was. He did some research and Toro is using plastic parts now and a tube where the gas moves tends to get clogged quite easily now.

So another $130 later and its fixed. So this mower cost about $335 and I am already in the hole $200 in repairs in just a year.

I am starting my second season with the 20339 var-spd high-wheel smartstow. I love the smartstow feature. I do not care for personal pace feature, and I like the fwd over the rwd. I only use the assist on occasion.

I would have preferred the Honda engine option or even the Toro-named one, but it was not available with the simplier smart stow config. Overall I still like the mower more than most I have used. The surprise bonus was that I really like the fact that the push arm can go into 2 different heights for mowing.

The higher one is more comfortable if I want to be lazy, stand straight and let the fwd assist work. The lower one is much better if you need to get behind it, especially in hilly parts. I also really like the side chute’s attachment compared to some others.

The engine starts well. I did not want a Briggs, but my last mower and this one both had one, and they did well. I run premium non-ethanol fuel exclusively. However, I am not sure if the fuel cap is Briggs’ or Toro’s, but it is junk.

Mine likes to vibrate off, which is really annoying. You have to stay on top of it or you can get debris in the fuel tank. The gas tank vent has a tendency to really coat the air filter, and it gets looking bad, I am swapping for a new one already.

One of the plastic ends on the mower height adjustment broke in half. The most alarming issue is that sometimes when you put the push bar back into the mowing position, the left side goes to the first position, but the right wants to go to the second.

That springs the the whole mower and it will wobble. If you are on grass, you can not notice at first, but the mower will mow uneven. The whole thing can wobble with so much range you have to adjust a wheel an entire peg position to balance it out.

It took me a few minutes to realize what happened, I thought the rear brackets were sprung or bent. Now, I just pop a quick wheelie on the cement and make sure she is level before I take off. Briggs is smoking some good stuff if they think I am not changing my oil every season.

I really like this mower, but it has enough nuance problems, that I would be scared to let a teen or spouse that is unfamiliar with it take off and mow without instruction.
