20 Best Laser Printer For Envelopes (2023 Updated)

This is a great laser printer for the money. I bought it to replace the same model, which I purchased new four years ago and which stopped printing clearly recently. I am a writer and do a lot of printing, so I got maximum usage out of the previous printer and it performed beautifully.

The only real downside of this printer is that you have to replace the toner cartridge after 2300 pages and that costs $45-$50. You also have to replace the housing into which the toner is inserted, which is called the drum unit, after 12,000 pages.

The drum unit costs $90-$100. I had to replace the drum unit after two years of printing. So the replacement toner cartridge almost costs as much as the printer itself and the drum unit costs more. But this is typical with printers, be they laser or inkjet.

But this has been my favorite monochrome laser printer – I’ve previous used Hewlett Packard, Lexmark and Samsung printers. I have been so happy with my Brother printer that I recently purchased Brother printers for both my sister and my parents.

Last year I picked up the world’s smallest laser jet printer (in its class) – the HP LaserJet M110W. The black and white printer made a number of compromises in order to take up less space on a desk (it’s 13.

6 X 7. 5 x 6. 3 at 8. 4 pounds) yet it managed to produce excellent printed pages. I was anxious to see if a “Pro” model from HP offered anything better than the M110W. I was underwhelmed with the results.

The HP LaserJet Pro 4001 offers a traditional laser jet printer in the physical dimensions of being a no frills big square hunk of plastic (15 X 14. 06 X 8. 5 at 18. 13 pounds) with a non-movable LED display and a proper paper tray designed to handle large printing loads.

HP even offers the option to add a third printer tray capable of holding an additional 550 sheets. What this printer is sorely missing though is duplex printing. In an age where saving the planet and conservation of materials is at the forefront of most businesses, HP continues to release printers that don’t offer duplex printing.

For conservation efforts HP gets a +1 for no longer including a USB cable so that’s one less item for a landfill. It also means a headache if you one of the few who insist on connecting the printer directly to a computer.

The preferred method of connectivity is Wifi but the unit ships with an Ethernet connection as well. I was most interested in what the “Pro” label adds to the functionality beyond being able to hold more paper and having an ethernet port.

Looking at the spec sheet it translates to faster print speeds, more printing (80,000 pages a month instead of 8,000), more memory, a faster processor, and yes holding more paper, which really boils down to how many people are sharing this printer and will be printing at the same time.

If you need a workhorse printer for a small office this printer is a good buy. But I will caution that where things get weird is what I would describe as print quality. On the technical specifications sheet HP moved from FastRes 600 up to FastRes 1200 and now includes HP ProRes1200 and the stated resolution is what they call Fine Lines (1200 X 1200 DPI).

In other words, everything should look better on paper from the previous generation of the printing technology. But print the same thing on the M110 and put it next to a print from the Pro 4001 and you’ll find the M110 produces what I can only describe as “brighter” prints which to my eyes are easier to read.

This behavior is consistent with black and white photos, color photos printed in black and white, technical white papers heavy on small text and light on charts and graphs, it just doesn’t seem to matter what is printed, everything looks better coming out of the M110.

That’s not to say what’s coming out of the Pro 4001 is bad, it’s just not as vivid. Overall I expected a better print quality from a Pro model and it’s just not there, though the lack of duplex printing is a much bigger shortcoming.

PLEASE READ THIS!!First of all I want to tell you that this is awesome small and simple printer exactly what me and probably most of you need. One of the things that is NOT in the manual is that there is very very simple way to connect this printer to your home network without cables pc or phone at all.

Just turn on the WPS on the printer and push the WPS button on your home router and after 1 min its connected. To turn on the WPS mode on the printer just press and hold the blue button with wireless icon for 5 sec.

I read a lot of reviews about this HP M102w stating that is slow and noisy and what not. This printer works fast and quiet. It takes exactly 7seconds from fully sleep mode to printed page from my phone.

The Smart HP printing app works very well too. It finds the printer for seconds over your WiFi network. For me is the best solution for my needs l, and for the price range its just perfect. Its small and it can be stored everywhere.

Do not hesitate to buy you will not regret. Hope this review help you with your decision. And by the way the quality of the prints is excellent. The toner that comes with the printer is for 600 pages, after that you can buy larger capacity for 1600 pages.

Ok, bit of a story but hopefully its a heads up to others. I had some spare drives lying around so thought id pop those into this, 3x 1TB drives and a single 500GB. Configured as XRAID, the ReadyNAS creates two RAID5 volumes, a 4 disk one of 500GB and a 3 disk one of the remaining 500GB on the 1TB drives.

It then presents the sum of that as a single data volume so quite painless and neat. During some configuration, the unit didnt respond and I had to pull the power plug, at this point, it appeared to have lost the configuration and told me that I had to remove inactive disks to use the volumes data and data0 the above RAID sets but the disks werent inactive.

Anyway, since I was just setting up, I put it down to one of those random IT things and carried on. Having set up the volumes, I set to work shoving stuff from a plethora of disks onto this, you know the sort of thing, the family photos, the family videos, all that important stuff.

Good plan, after all, this is going onto a RAID store. you can see where this is going already rightNext, I thought id get smart. Rather than copy from a USB external drive on my PC, across the network to the NAS, why not just connect the USB 3 drive direct to the back of the NAS, surely the copy would be faster on the same hardware than introduce the network.

That all went smimmingly. until the last and yes really it was the last file, 7GB, not that thats of specific relevance but as my luck would have it, the NAS fell off the network, it would respond to ping but not the power button.

Only one thing for it, pull the power plug. Upon reinserting the power plug and watching it boot, it flashed to say that drive 3 had failed well I didnt think it had but I thought Uh oh. at least its RAID are you falling off your chair laughing yetSo I went into the NAS web admin page to be told.

Remove inactive disks 1,2,3,4 in order to access the volume data and as previously, it was showing me the raw data and data0 RAID 5 sets. Going to the share config in the admin told me that I needed to create a volume first.

WTFYou might think, oh well, it was only copying to it but in classic screw up fashion, id been deleting as I went from my source disks bangs head VERY hard. Now, just to put this into some perspective, there are many things that Id be very ashamed to have to admit to my wife that id done.

Telling her how I, an IT guy for 30 years had just monumentally lost all our family pictures and videos was right there at the top of the shame list. Being a holiday weekend, I figured now was the time to turn it off and just leave it before waiting 2 days to get in touch with Netgear support.

I rationalised that the data must be there, some part of the config was missing but nonetheless, spent money on volume recoveryundelete software and went at the lengthy process of scouring my original disks to recover what I could.

I also had 2 days in which to readresearch and see what other experiences people had with these units. Some even report the same issues or very similar in Stationery Packs reviews. When I did get through to Netgear the first level support girl was very understanding, had a look at the logs Im sure she didnt mind encountering the porn on the PC while looking in the downloads folder for the log.

We had a discussion on this point, I accept the HCL, non compliant statement but pressed my point that the disk that failed wasnt the non HCL one and that upon reboot again, it was not showing an error so I believed the error at the time to be a timing related issue or similar.

Anyway, she was courteous and escalated me to second level. Ian went through his routine equally competently I might add and conceded that this was going to be escalated and he wanted to go through the option to enable SSH.

There the unit sat for a day. patiently waiting to be stroked and teased by a level 3 tech. I did expect a phone call first but I happened to be sitting next to it and noticed it was active, disk activity, then it shutdown and restarted into the running mode.

Immediately then came an email from level 3 tech to say he had recovered the volume, take a look. As I write this, I am copying everything off as a backup, as per my original intent. The unit has a choice of several apps which connect to various cloud storage providers for automated backup, one of those will be going on later and I shall also be writing out some Blu Ray discs for backup and looking at a fireproof safe.

I will replace the non HCL drive tomorrow, even though I dont see that as a factor here, Netgear wouldnt be unreasonable for denying support as they state they may. Ive spent my working career for IT hardware and software manufacturers so I know how that works, the risk was mine.

Credit to Netgear support, very professional, courteous, understanding and with a fabulous outcome HUGE THANK YOUOnce ive got the content secure, im going to bully it a bit more and see if I can understand the failure mode, especially when I have 4 HCL compliant drives, then that might be a different discussion but for now, if you too want to avoid utter shame and a divorce lawyer.

I like the iSCSI support, just need bigger disks to make more use of that to create volumes on others machines in the house, plus I need to have more confidence that the thing isnt going to drop the config on me again.

The ability to dynamically add bigger drives one at a time to allow rebuild and not have to fully backup hahahaha and reconfig the RAID sets seems like it should be a nice feature. So at the moment, Im not unhappy, just bruised confidence and after a few days of bullying it, if I can reproduce it dropping the volume configuration then ill likely be winging its way back to Stationery Packs.

Final words in case they havent sunk in. you cannot replace those years of lost family pictures and videos, however you can replace the wife but that tends to be expensive apparently.

This printer is great and easy to use. The installation of printer drivers was surprisingly painless, and its the first printer I’ve had that I’ve actually been able to connect to wirelessly. I love its ability to handle a variety of paper sizes, including very large paper.

Print quality is great! The only small hiccup I’ve encountered is that it installs multiple options to print from on your computer (the ePrint feature, the network printer option, and the USB connection option) and the name(s) of all of those are not as user-friendly as they could be.

It’s fine once you know what name refers to what. The only time that’s an issue is if the different connections have different settings (ex. auto-duplexing was not enabled in the USB connection, and it took me a while to figure that out and what to do about it).

Otherwise, I love this thing and I can’t wait to use it more!.

This printer doesn’t have all the extra bells and whistles and is priced as such. If you want fast, sharp black and white prints, this fits the bill. Not true wi-fi but the Smart app makes it perform like wi-fi from any device as long as you’re okay connecting the printer itself to your network router/modem via ethernet.

Manual only for two-sided printing. Doesn’t have a scanner or a copier. A printer only. But with the smart app, you can scan your items with your phone or tablet camera and seamlessly send the print job to this printer.

Same thing for files. If you have the need to do photos regularly, that would be one reason to go with a different printer.

My old HP M402n was awesome, so I ordered the updated model M404n when it was time to buy. Stay with a winner, right? Wrong. Maybe HP engineers tried loading too much software capability into the Smart App?? It worked initially.

for 1 day. then started going “offline” regularly. Tried using the HP support, Scan Doctor, delete/reinstall. you name it. but the Doctor never revived this critter. I’m a mid-level tech sort of guy, but after I wasted 4 hours of my work time, I called it quits.

Returned it, bought a Brother HL-L2395. $100 cheaper, BTW. No problems, up and flying in about 15 minutes with the set up CD and online updates.

Laser printers have several advantages over inkjet printers…but, at the same time, there are certain advantages that ink jet printers have over laser printers. The HP LaserJet Pro M404n is a perfect example.

Is the M404n right for you? We shall see………. UNBOXING & INITIAL IMPRESSIONS: Many companies have switched to “environmentally-friendly packaging” (cardboard, as opposed to Styrofoam), including HP in many of their lower-end printers.

Unfortunately, HP still uses (a lot of) Styrofoam in packaging their higher-end printers. While it does keep the printer ‘safe’ during shipping, the impact to the environment will last for several human generations.

As for cables, the ONLY cable included is the power cord…there are no USB and/or Ethernet cables included. On the ‘bright’ side, the printer’s toner cartridge comes pre-installed. SETUP: This was both simple, and difficult.

The physical setup, as well as installing the drivers & software, were a breeze. Setup consisted of plugging in the power cable, connecting the Ethernet cable (the printer can be connected directly to a single computer, via USB, if you don’t want/need network printing capabilities), powering the printer up, and answering a few simple questions on the printer’s 2-line LCD display.

For driver/software installation, you have two options – you can download the HPEasyStart file (6. 43MB), or you can download the full-install package (111. 5MB). The first option is the easier, and smarter, way to go, as it will only download the components needed for your specific setup, and will walk you through every (well, almost every, as I later discovered, and will explain, below) step of the install/configure process.

As mentioned, there is a slight problem in configuring everything, that being that, while configuring the EWS (Embedded Web Server settings, the ‘Internet connection’ is not automatically connected. After installation is complete, if you go to the “Web Services” tab, on the ‘Summary’ page, under ‘Internet connection’, it will indicate “Not Connected”…even though ‘Web Services Status’ shows “Enabled”, and ‘Printer connection to HP Connected’ indicates “Connected”.

As discovered during a phone call with HP’s tech support, the printer’s Network connection needs to be set to a static IP, as opposed to the dynamic IP setting configured during the setup. You do this in a 2-step process.

First, on the “Network” tab, under ‘General’, click on ‘Network Protocols’, and change it to “Enable IPv4 only”, then click. Next, go to ‘Wired’ (“Network” tab), then ‘IPv4 Configuration’, and change the IP Address Configuration from “DHCP” to “Manual IP”.

If everything is working as it should, your previously auto-assigned IPv4 information should automatically be filled into the ‘Manual IP’ & ‘DNS’ boxes. To finish, just click. If you go back to the “Web Services” tab, under ‘Summary’, the Internet connection line should now read “Connected”.

Needless to say, a relatively minor problem, but a bit of a PitA in regards to getting the info needed to fix it (the HP tech support person didn’t provide the solution…it was jointly discovered during the phone call.

PRINT QUALITY AND SPEED: This is one area that laser printers greatly excel over inkjet printers. Print quality IS OUTSTANDING…the blacks are “black”, grayscale is “grayscale”, text & images are sharp…no more, and no less, than what I would have expected.

HP claims a maximum print speed of 40ppm, and it’s quite accurate…and not accurate. Using a 42-page document, I ran three tests, although the first two tests produced almost-identical results. First, I printed one page, from the printer in “Sleep Mode”, then one page with printer ‘awake’, and finally the remaining 40 pages, also with the printer ‘awake’.

Whether the printer was ‘asleep’, or ‘awake’, it made no difference, which I’ll explain. With an inkjet, printing is, essentially, a 1-step process – you click , the computer sends the print data to the printer, and it prints whatever was sent.

With laser printers, on the other hand, it is a 2-step process. Step 1 consists of clicking , which sends a command to the printer that a print job is about to start, the laser printer “warms up”, and finally the printer sends back a command that it’s “ready to receive the print data”.

The second step consists of said print data being sent to the printer, and the printer printing what it received. In ALL three tests, the first step took approx 1. 5 minutes (+/- 4 seconds). In the first two tests, the printer completed the second step in approx 10 seconds.

As such, while the “printing” took only 10 seconds, the total printing process took approx 1 minute, 40 seconds. Moving onto the final test, the second step took 62 seconds. So, in essence, this does prove that HP’s claim of “printing” up to 40ppm is accurate…however, when combining the time of both steps, the total printing process took just under 2.

5 minutes. While the “total printing process” might be much longer than HP’s 40ppm claim, that’s still faster than most inkjet printers. Considering that the printing was done at the ‘Normal’ setting, an equivalent print job on an inkjet might have taken considerably longer (even if printing “black only”).

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: HP lists the LaserJet Pro M404n as having two paper trays…and, in a matter of speaking, it does…but, not entirely. What is labeled as ‘Tray 2’ is actually your primary tray, located at the bottom of the printer, and capable of holding up to 250 sheets.

Before I cover ‘tray 1’, I will mention that you can purchase/install an additional paper tray (which becomes ‘tray 3’), and has a 500-sheet capacity. Getting back to ‘tray 1’, this is accessed by opening the front panel, and manually loading (up to 150 sheets) the paper (a flip-up extender allows it to accommodate legal-length paper), or envelopes.

While you could, technically, leave ‘tray 1’ loaded all the time, its real use is in temporary usage. If you want two different paper-types loaded on a regular basis, I would highly suggest/recommend purchasing the 500-sheet ‘tray 3’.

Also, the 2-line display could be better. At minimum, a 3-line display should have been included. Better yet, a color touch-screen display, as seen in almost off of HP’s other LaserJet printers (including less-expensive models, wouldn’t have been too much to ask for.

Looking at all their LaserJet printers in the same general price-range ($200-399), there are 9 different ‘series’, 5 of which have touch-screen displays, including two models that are up to $100 cheaper than the M404n.

THE GOOD: • Excellent print quality • Extremely high-speed printing • Easy to understand/use software • (Mostly) Simple to set up • Compact size (for a business-oriented laser printer) THE BAD: • Getting the printer “internet connected” isn’t automatically accomplished, requires manual settings • No auto-duplex printing THE UGLY: • For the price, HP could have easily included a touch-screen display FINAL VERDICT: If you’re only printing a few pages at a time, then an inkjet printer is probably your best bet.

If you need to print in color, I stand by that same comment. Lastly, if your monthly printing is fairly low (say, less than 50 pages/month), then you should ask yourself if you REALLY need a laser printer.

However, if you have any need for printing high-volume print jobs and/or you print over 100pages/month and/or you need printouts to be waterproof (inkjet prints are NOT waterproof, and WILL bleed if gotten wet), then a laser printer will fit your needs.

The are less expensive laser printers (from HP, as well as from other manufacturers), but they will have less features/functions, slower print speeds, and (typically) only a single tray). There are also laser printers with lots more features/functions (including fax capability), faster print speeds (up to 60ppm w/ HP), and multiple trays (up to 5 w/ HP), but they can cost into the thousands of dollars.

If you’re looking for a reasonably-priced black-only laser printer, with a reasonable number of features/functions, that also prints fast, HP’s M404-series of LaserJet printers will fit the bill. There are five models to choose from, with the M404n being the middle-of-the-pack.

I have had the M452dw for about a month now. Setup for a Mac was easy and fast, no problems whatsoever. The printer requires very little in the way of setup both physically and software-wise. We are using wi-fi and once the pass codes are entered our Macs were able to find and complete the setup.

Printing from iPhone and iPad work without problem. This is the best printer I have found in a long time. We are a graphic design firm so wanted a printer that is relatively fast and has accurate color rendition as well.

This printer meets both of those requirements. It is sturdily constructed and has excellent fit and finish. We have tried a variety of lasers over the years and were never very impressed with the color output so have been using a variety of ink jets for color proofing and using laser mostly for black and white and internal quick-n-dirty color proofs.

This printer is the first laser we have had that meets our color requirements and that we can actually use to show clients proofs. While it doesn’t offer the quality of high-end ink jets for photo work, the output on photos is very, very good and certainly more than acceptable for most general photo printing–no they are not museum quality for hanging on a wall, but for most uses the quality of photos is excellent.

H-P has also done an excellent job of removing the magenta cast in what should be neutral grey areas of photographic images–something most desktop printers suffer from and can be inherent in converting images to and printing in the CMYK color space.

Toner cartridges give a much larger yield than ink jets, and while the cost is not ‘cheap’ it is far better than ink jets plus it is so nice to not be constantly changing ink cartridges and trying to unclog nozzles.

The duplex feature works flawlessly. Print speed is very fast for everyday Word-type documents, a bit slower for our more graphic work, but still good output speed. The printer includes Postscript language support so it can handle vector artwork from programs like Adobe Illustrator very well.

Type is sharp at all sizes. At this point in time we are very pleased with this printer and certainly recommend it.

This is a good looking, very nice and quality Printer. I purchased it at Staples at a great price. It is small in size, it has great print quality and it was easy to set up. Once installation is complete, it is a very quiet printer.

However, this printer meets my needs and so far, I am very happy with the quality, speed and reliability of the printer. Note: The HP Color LaserJet Pro M452nw and the HP Color LaserJet Pro M452dw have built in wireless capability.

IšverstiShow in original languageThe printer itself is a good workhorse, print good and is a good value. Unfortunately Brother resorts to cheap unscrupulous tactics to make money. It does it through the toner indicator.

Even if the print is still good the toner indicator comes on and the printer stops working. Why can’t the customers decide for themselves if they want to keep printing even if the quality has decreased due to low toner? In my case even after replacing the toner cartridge the toner light stays on and the printer refuses to work.

Who needs to be told when to replace the toner cartridge or drum? We will replace them when and only when we’re unhappy with the resulting printout. Can’t these printer companies understand that?.

Now that I’m into my dissertation and need to print 20+-page articles every few days – sometimes 9 or 10 at a time – the inkjet is no longer useful for my purposes.

I saw this printer for very cheap at Staples and decided to go for it. I am unsure about real-life cost-effectiveness, since I’ve only had the printer for a few days. I am still using the starter toner that came with the printer.

It has lasted through about 250 pages of full text so far. I ordered the high-yield (2,500-page) toner from Staples for $61 including tax. Drum replacement looks to be about $100 every 12,000 pages (every 4 toner cartridges).

That says it will cost about $350 every 12,000 pages or so, if the printer lasts that long. This printer is small and light, and very simple. When it runs out of paper, it gives the red error message.

You add paper, press the single button, and it works again. Startup-to-print time is very quick – less than 10 seconds after flipping the power switch. I was stunned at how fast pages came out of this little thing (quicker even than the HP 2300 I have in my office).

And yes, the lights in my apartment dim when it prints. I use this with a Macbook Pro over Airport Extreme (it worked! first try!) I am confident in my purchase. (But not so confident that I waived the $15 warranty option when I purchased from Staples for $69 after rebates!) 2 caveats: this printer does not come with a USB cable (but my $3 USB 2.

0 cable worked just fine. ) As I said, it only comes with a starter toner, which is supposed to last only 250 pages (mine has lasted exactly that, and no fading yet).

IšverstiShow in original languageI use my printer exclusively for school, and really appreciate that it is much faster than an inkjet, and much crisper for text. If you don’t care to print in color or print any photos, this is an excellent home office printer.

You should be warned, however, that the manufacturer included an automatic toner detection system that allows only for a certain number of pages. I can guarantee that you will encounter an empty toner error before you actually run out of toner.

This problem can be easily remedied, however. It is easy to remove the toner cartridge after experiences such an error and cover up the sensor — this allows you to block the error. I’m still using the cartridge that the printer came with, and I’ve gone about 1000 pages over the official limit for the cartridge.

There are a few drawbacks to this machine — it jams about once every couple hundred pages or so, but honestly, every printer (including the professional printers in any office) will jam at least this often.

It’s simply unavoidable. One other drawback: the printer is not wireless, so you will have to set up a printer server or some other workaround. This is very easy for Windows 7 users, who can simply add a network printer over the homegroup.

Even after unplugging for a week, plug back in and data and error lights still on. Told by brother to press some keys to factory reset BUT all keys are unresponsive! This has caused me serious grief and hours searching on internet.

I’ve lost jobs, had work performance issues because I can’t print anything. This was a $500 printer and I can’t afford to go out and buy another. There is obviously nothing mechanical wrong. It printed just fine before I sent it a very large job, which it didn’t print.

I erased everything including printer from my iMac set-up, and tried to “add” the printer again but now my iMac won’t even recognize there is a printer attached to it. Then it asks for ports and other things I have no idea where to find such numbers and I don’t have a “system admin” to ask.

Very frustrating. I have been very please with brother monochrome laser printers up till now-having bought at least 5 of them. Now I’m really annoyed and hobbled by this problem. They did call once after I told them it didn’t work still but by the time I could call back it was the weekend and there is no support.

I have three of the 6200dwt Brother laser pronters. I do mobile clisings and print about 500 pages a day. This printer is a workhorse. The cartridges produce approximately 10000 pages before needong to be replaced.

It does not require much maintenance and lasts a long time. You can also print letter and legal with the dual tray. It also prints about 30 pages a minute.

I have spent a long time looking for a mono laser printer with a true 1200x1200dpi resolution, and this one delivers. Very happy with it, I use it to print small positives on acetate at the highest resolution for screenprinting.

Very sharp, prints about 3000 copies with 1 toner, high yield toners are also available 8000 copiestoner. I regretted not getting the networked version, but this one is just as good, as I have a small setup anyway.
