The knot you would use to tie two ropes together is called a square knot. To tie a square knot, take the left rope in your left hand and the right rope in your right hand. Cross the left rope over the right rope, and then tuck it underneath.
Now take the rope in your right hand and put it over the left rope. Tuck it underneath, and then pull on both ropes to tighten the knot.
I always forget what knot to use and how to tie it. These cards are pure gold. I keep them attached to my purse with a biner so I always have them. The cards also had a few knots I have never done before.
It looks like these will be durable and last a long time. I took one star away because it didn’t come with a biner. Knots included are: bowline, tattling hitch, stopper knot, square knot, water knot, timber hitch, buntline hitch, rolling and clove hitch, constrictor knot, half hitch, sheet bind, prussic knot, double fisherman’s, cleat hitch, truckers hitch, figure eight, mooring hitch, butterfly knot, and bowline on a bight.
Only recommendations would be to add a few cards about lashings, if that is possible, and most of all a biner. This would be an excellent resource for a scout or avid camper.
I know how to tie several knots, but lets face it. there have been times when I needed to tie something off in a strange manner, but I couldn’t because I couldn’t recall how to tie the required knot.
On occassion, I’d find myself trying to remember some step critical to a knot’s performance, “Do you go over the bight or under?. Hmmm. ” I needed something quick, easy, light weight, & durable. Over the years, I’ve owned several books & booklets on knot tying.
Unfortunately, some gave instructions and illustrations that were so complex I couldn’t even tie the knots I already knew! Moreover, paper books are not practical in the outdoors. However, this card set is different.
Really, it is the best I’ve ever come across. There is a large enough variety of knots to satisfy most needs without overwhelming the novice, and the directions are VERY easy to understand. This card set is so small, light, & easy to use that I keep two sets in my sailboat, one in my sea kayak, and one in my home.
They’ve saved a trip or two for me and have become trusted companions on the water.
The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Knots and Ropework Step-by-Step instructions for over 200 different knots, bends, hitches, loops, plaits and whippings Clear photographs show in detail each stage of tying every knot Fascinating facts about the history and origins of knots, from the Neolithic Age when the reef knot, clove hitch and running noose were used, through to the most up-to-date knots and knotting techniques A clear and indispensable guide to the variety of cords and ropes: their breaking strengths, construction and application Each knot is clearly identified by category from angling to boating, caving to climbing, general purpose to outdoor pursuits.
I have a small collection of knot tying and rope working books starting back in 1903. Of course some are better than others, to say the least. This book however, is the best in my collection to this point.
The reasons vary from simplicity, to breaking down complex information and making it simple. The instructions are detailed, and include hints in order to further simplify the instructions given. The step by step photographs, along with the instructions and the hints remind me of the “.
For Dummies” books. One particular knot that immediately comes to mind is the Bimini Twist. This knot is almost, if not exclusively for fishing, and usually for BIG fish. In this book it’s broken down very simplistically.
As with most all of the featured knots, there’s a paragraph or so explaining the main use(s) for the knot, followed by a series of numbered photographs, under each of which are instructions for getting you there.
With this particular knot, as well as many others, the author chose to illustrate it with much larger cordage than would normally be used for this knot, simply for clarity, which he comes right out and tells you.
Having tied this knot many times myself, I was particularly impressed with the fact that in the directions, though not shown in the photographs, the author made it clear that using your feet to tie this knot was almost requisite to getting the job done.
I ran into many details such as this, which I appreciated highly, especially from the standpoint that not all people interested in reading this book, may be as proficient as I am with using rope and knots, and will surely appreciate the extra attention to detail that has been given throughout this book.
From my standpoint i rate this book, for what it is, as SUPERB, A+++.
I wanted a book that had more depth on a wide range of knots than others I’d read, this exceeded my expectations while at the same time having good (beautifully rusticaly styled) photos, history and stories that make it more than a dry technical read.
Lovely to browse though randomly as well as an excellent reference when I need a particular type of knot suited to a specific task where I know it will perform best. Much more fun than just looking them up online, but if I do need to reference a video, then this gives me the correct names and terms to do so quickly.
Love this book! Should be aboard every vessel – from a dinghy to a mega yacht. Ropework and knots made easy with clear step by step instructions, all visually aided with photo’s a blind man could follow.
JT International Heavy metal Easy to use Eliminates complicated knots Replaces dutchman knots Save your picket rope from knotting with the easy-to-use Swivel No-Knot! Made of heavy metal. Eliminates complicated knots and replaces dutchman knots.
Ring swivels to keep your rope from getting tangled up, just loosen the line to put it in.
Works as intended and the very best way in my opinion to tie horses and mules in the forest. Better than knots as you can put the places to tie where you want them. With the swivel won’t allow the rope to twist up and tangle.
I had one purchased previously that broke and the swivel came off. otherwise would have rated 5.
Tying your horses to the high line/picket line can be challenging. We switched to this swivel because of issues with others. Our horses were more calm and moved around much easier with the swivel. There was no pacing, no lead line knotting and no getting off the line.
We would recommend this product to all horse owners. Durability: 5.
Create tight, uniform, professional – quality knotted strands by using The Bead Buddy Knotting Tool. Use this knotting tool to string pearls and colorful beads together to create fashionable handcrafted jewelry designs.
You can use it to quickly string fine beads to craft necklaces, bracelets and more. The pack illustrates an easy – to – follow instruction and diagram for ease of use. Brand: The Bead BuddyIncludes a tool & instructions with diagram.
This tool helps ensure tidy knots that cozy up to each bead. It does require some practice to hold the tool correctly and how to place the cord for the optimum knot, but I think it’s a whole lot easier than the simple use of an awl.

Filled with more than 600 photographs, this convenient, compact guide also includes a section on decorative knots, a cross-reference list of the many applications of knots, and a detailed glossary.
For anyone who’s ever despaired of making a bowline knot from instructions saying “dive into the bunny hole,” or illustrations showing a plain line in figure 1, a completed knot in figure 4, and a bafflement of loops in between, here is a solution.
Originally written in Italian but translated into English by Maria Piotrowska, the Morrow Guide discloses the secrets of knots for sailing, fishing, camping, and climbing, with clear instructions and 647 color photographs that take the mystery out of the swivel hitch, the grapevine knot, the knotted sheepshank, the Spanish bowline, the stopper knot, and 68 more.
This book about knots is great! The photos show you how to tie the knot as if you were tying it. I have learned a couple knots already. I got this mainly for the fishing knots info but can see it will be of great use for camping too.
I should buy another copy so I can keep it with my camping gear. Very useful & highly recommend it.
It is easy to see why this 1981 book is still in print and selling. The pictures show the techniques of tying the knots well, and the text gives good explanations and addresses various applications or uses of the knots.
The introduction goes over different types of cordage and what they are good for. Although the book declares it is for “sailing, fishing, camping and climbing,” I would say that sailing is treated as a first among equals.
Purchased this book and BlueWater 7mm Accessory Cord Red as a gift for my son. As an avid sailor and boy scout he was excited to practice knots he infrequently uses/has never used. The step-by-step instructions are very easy to understand.
He has been doing a “knot of the day” to practice and perfect his skills. Great book!!.

been using this to climb and pull down a big tree (~60ft), impressed. using it as my safety line, hope I don’t have to test it in free fall, but it held strong when I checked my knots hanging 1′ off the ground.
had a big section of tree rigged w this and with 1/2 jib sheet (strong stuff)- the jib sheet snapped, this held.
Lenzen is the creator of the highly acclaimed YouTube channel “Tying It All Together”, and the producer of over 200 instructional videos. He’s been formally recognized by the International Guild of Knot Tyers (IGKT) for his contributions to knotting, and is the originator of fusion knotting—innovative knots created through the merging of different knot elements or knotting techniques.
“Paracord Fusion Ties – Volume 1” is the first of a multiple volume set of books exclusively utilizing paracord for his fusion knotting techniques. Originally used as parachute suspension lines during World War II, paracord has since become a means to create an immeasurable variety of useful items, survival tools, and decorative ties.

By way of over 800 crisp, clear, full-color photographs, coupled with succinctly written, easy to follow step-by-step instructions, he will show you how to create spherical ties, bars and bracelets, key fobs, medallions, straps, rapid deployment ties, falls, and more.
A book for young and old, expert knot tyers and novices alike, “Paracord Fusion Ties – Volume 1” is a must for every knot enthusiast’s library!.
Great book. The layout, content, and written tutorials make it very easy to follow. This is my first book on how to work with paracord and I found this to be a perfect starter book. I have watched the author’s videos, and his written lessons are just as easy to follow as the videos.
A must for anyone looking to expand their horizons in the paracord world.
I found this to be a perfect book. I have watched the author’s videos, and his written lessons are just as easy to follow as the videos. A must for anyone looking to expand their weaves, in the paracord world.
The book is well organized with many clear step by step photos that show how to complete every tie and knot in the book. It would be helpfull if the reader had a little previous knowledge of cord tieing as a primer before trying some of these ties/knots; however the author has made it quite easy for even the novice to complete all of the featured ties/knots in the book.
Weaver Silvertip Four Knot Rope Halter is hand-tied from 1/4 accessory cord and is similar to halters used by top clinicians. Two extra knots are strategically-placed at the noseband to encourage your horse to give to pressure and seek release.
I was kind of disappointed these didn’t come in a lot of colors. I don’t want to use a chain if i don’t have to so i bought the rope halter and I put it on my little half arab mare that just has some “i can’t hear you” mentality some days while lungeing and asking to slow down and when i asked her to walk and gently popped her face in this she slowed right down.
It was like god himself came down and slapped her to walk I have never seen a transition so good with this mare. It was so effective just the little pop on her nose i gave her ONCE that while riding next i just asked for walk and she dropped right down to a walk.
This halter has set my mare straight and it doesn’t hurt like a chain does it just gets her attantion.
I love this halter. I used to use the traditional webbing halters and got very little reaction out of my horses. Since i have been watching Clinton Anderson videos, he recommend a rope halter with the two knots on the nose.
Clinton’s halter was to expensive, so I found this one. It’s thinner then Clinton’s halter, but he does recommend something thin. The horse has nothing to lean on like they would with a traditional webbing halter.
It’s alil big in size, but rather have alil wiggle room then to tight. I would definitely recommend this halter.

featuring illustrations of the 10 most popular knots. that folds out to a 12″ ruler. Waterproof.
Nifty wee set of rigid laminates, demonstrating some knots. Illustrated, with a few words, but all very simply, so a guide to, rather than a definitively exact how to. The effort of trying to convert the info & illustration into the ‘should look like this’ end example should be enough to download, kinaesthetically, how to tie each knot.
Good product, packed well, arrived quickly. Recommended.
A brilliant pocket sized guide to so of the handiest knots you need to know. I deal for carrying with you when out camping or on bush craft trips. Water proof and fit it to a wallet or small pocket and weighs net to nothing, a good little item.
I don’t tie knots often enough to have them memorised and this is the most useful aid of this type that I’ve found. It is far better than free knot tying cards you can download and print out yourself because it limits itself to a relatively small number of the most useful knots and makes some attempt to explain when a knot should and should not be used.
I haven’t carried this in a wallet and I don’t know whether the printing on the outside would rub off over time. The surface appears to be very hard so I think it would hold up OK for a while. Buying this from Australia, the cost is a little higher than I would have liked, but I found it worth the price.

We go at least twice a month. We used this rope on our last camping trip to secure all the camping gear in the back of our truck. We tugged and pulled to get a tight grip. The rope held up with our tugging, with no fraying or breaking, it worked perfectly.
The braided poly rope not only makes the rope stronger but it also withstands the weather so much better. It doesn’t rot or is it affected by the UV rays. Braided rope doesn’t unravel as twisted rope and much more reliable.
When we got to our site by the lake, we pitched the tent and hung a line to hold our towels, suits, etc. This rope is fabulous. It doesn’t give way, and the rope stays strong even when towing in the water.
In fact, it’s was perfect to tie up our sleeping bags for storing. It’s strong rope, but you can untie it easily when you want. This rope isn’t just for camping. Actually I think it would be great for some craft uses.
The braided rope looks nice for hanging planters. Pretty to glue around a pot or vase for decoration. It’s great for moving when you want to keep the moving blankets on your appliances, this rope works perfect for that.

I purchased an old Cape Dory 27 lying neglected in Santa Cruz harbor. Among the many items that need replacement or repair were all the halyards and sheets for the jibs and genoa. When I saw the notice of a 40% discount on “rope” at West Marine, I didn’t hesitate.
I went to the 17th ave. store and was assisted and advised buy Tim Clark. I purchased replacement for all my weathered lines and even ordered a line fitted with a my old eyelet for the boom uphill. I got the sale price on everything.
West Marine got a happy customer. Go ahead and shop then, when you know what you need, buy it at West Marine.
I bought a new jib sheet for my Island Packet in West Marine in Miami a few months ago. I sailed about 500 miles on it to Tampa Bay. When I inspected it after getting home and cleaning the boat there were 5 spots where the inner core was protruding from the outer line.
This was not in a chafe point or an area where it goes through my pulleys. 3 of the blow outs were on open line just a few feet from my sail. I’m very disappointed and have never had running rigging show such a poor performance.
I ordered this line to save a few bucks and what a mistake. I am writing this so others do not get stuck with a poor quality line like I have. First it is all fuzzy and looks worn right out of the box.
Second it is heavy and stiff and doesn’t coil well, run well or handle well. This line is a total disappointment but that’s what happens when you order online and do not go feel it first in the shop.

This durable diamond braid rope is built tough to pull and secure loads to 600 lb. The rope is woven with tough, 100% polyester strands and built to resist rot, mildew, oil and gas. – Red braid makes the rope easily visible for safety – Ideal for hauling, securing tents, tarps and loads – Diamond-braid minimizes stretch for long life and durability – Resistant to abrasion, gas, oil, mildew, and chemicals – Safe working load: 600 lb.
This is my second 100′ of this rope in a couple of years. For the price, it’s a good utility rope for simple tie-downs of light pickup or trailer loads of limbs, brush, that kind of stuff, or for holding tarp covers.
It frays at the ends when cut for shorter lengths, but at around a hundred feet for $10, I can live with that. It’s not “plasticky,” which I find extremely annoying when tying anything, unlike the polyester or whatever they’re made of ropes, and it holds and releases knots more easily than the plastic ropes.
This also seems to “weather” better than the plastic types which, in my experience, began to break into a fibrous powder when exposed to the sun for long. Harbor Freight’s price was the best I could find for this type and rating of rope, even without their 20% discount (which I’m still having to get used to and why I call it a good value and not a great value).
Using this rope to rig 3:1 to pull small trunks and branches up a slope, the rope sheath was slipping and bunching like crazy. It worked, but not very well. Knots tended to flatten out and were hard to undo (bowline, butterfly, etc.
), it also frayed quite easily. Harbor Freights camo rope was more functional than this, though rated for less working load. That’s what I get for trying be cheap, should have just got the proper rope.
I’m sure this rope would be just fine for more basic stuff.
I purchased two of these ropes to rake down a large oak that was leaning towards the house. This is the lowest priced 600 lb working load rope I have found. It certainly isn’t an arborist quality rope, but for incendental use it is perfect.
Also had low stretch, which isn’t so common with cheaper ropes.
The New England Ropes Sta-Set Double Braid is a proven performer, this double braid is #1 in the USA. It is strong, flexible and long wearing. It has a high strength and low stretch that is extremely durable.

The most common way to tie two ropes together is with a knot called the square knot. To tie a square knot, start by making a loop with one rope and passing the other rope through the loop. Then make a loop with the second rope and pass the first rope through the loop.
