20 Best Jigs For Lake Trout (2023 Updated)

Incredibly handy little tool. I have attached to one of the loops on my PFD. Much more convenient than puling out my pliers, or looking for my scissors. The retractable cord keeps it tucked up out of the way when not in use.

Cuts braid, mono, flouro all equally well. Will likely be picking up a second one for my son. Great tool for kayak fishing, or fishing in general.

It cuts 65lb powerpro maxcuatro braid and all other lines I’ve tried quickly and cleanly. Great little tool to attach to your life jacket while kayak fishing so its always where you need it. The only thing I’m really worried about is the retractable leash.

Seems like its not going to hold up too long. Insides needs to be sturdier and with a coated wire line for longevity. It would be nice if they made one with a aluminum body instead of cheap plastic but overall I really do like it because its very useful.

PRO: Best scissor knife that cuts all mono, flouro, and braid no matter how small. Inexpensive relative to other high end nippers. CON: It relies heavily on the retractor mechanism for mounting onto a bag, etc.

Nippers will be sharp, and work, although if the retractor or thread dies, you have to keep it in your pocket. OVERALL: Everything about my first Boomerang is still perfect and functional. I bought 2 more 🙂 future proof.

I have been using them for about two or three years now. They are hard to find on the shelves, the Cricket color is best, all other colors are IFFY. Twitch the pole tip, and they go sideways and in a circle at the same time.

too bad the teeth of the fish you catch eats up the covering. I still used them until too much metal was showing. I even put Berkley power scent on them. Big fast action or slow, both work well.

These little things are quite amazing. I don’t know what kind of fish crack is used in these, but its high quality stuff. Big blues even suck these down. works on almost all types of fish. MY ONLY COMPLAINT.

The Atomic tube in grasshopper color is the best lure I have used for multi-species catches, period ! A real crappie killer that also works great for smallmouth bass and walleyes !

I’ve had the most success with 250g Shimano Flat-Fall Jigs. They just seem to have a better action on the drop. However if the drift and/or current is strong it may never reach the target depth, so I keep an array of heavier jigs.

I have yet to get a bite on the heavier 300g-350g jigs. For targeting fish over 100lbs I recommend changing the assist hooks with a heavier setup.

I never used jigs because I was a “live bait” guy for many years and never thought I needed to use jigs to catch fish. This year I decided to give jigs a try and so I searched around and spoke with many anglers on which type and/or brand to use.

It seems the consensus was the “hottest ticket” right now to catching fish here in Southern California waters is using these Shimano Flat Falls, especially the glow in the dark ones. Let me tell you, they weren’t kidding.

These Flat Fall jigs are super easy to use and work really well for catching all kinds of fish! They are able to catch from your everyday Rockfish to a “fish of a lifetime” jumbo Bluefin Tunas! I would seriously recommend and if you are serious about your gear to give these Shimano Flat Fall jigs a try! You won’t be disappointed!.

These are my go-to jigs for slow pitch jigging. Can’t beat the action and cost. I especially like the green/silver one, which we nicknamed the “Green Machine” after one awesome morning of landing fish after fish, including a monster red grouper.

The finish is very resilient compared to similarly priced jigs. HIGHLY recommend!.

I have purchased these several times this year and so far have not been let down. Typically jigs (no matter the size) seem to sink too quickly for me as I fish very small creeks and streams. But these are simply amazing with the way they slowly sink and go with the current.

I’ve been using the trout magnet jig head for years. Excellent hook up ratio. I use them primarily for panfish. However I’ve also landed several respectable large mouth bass on them. Good value too.

If you like fishing small streams with an ultralight spinning rod this jig head is something you should try. It’s 1/64 of an oz. which is perfect for getting down into small holes without hanging up on the bottom.

This jig or dragging a bottom bouncer rig is the only two types of lures that will work for me in the lakes around here. These lakes are very heavily fished so it takes something different to catch fish in them.

One other thing that I think gives me an advantage is that most people around here have never fished for Bass or Trout as I have before I moved here. Casting this jig in toward shore from the boat and bouncing it along the bottom on the retrieve consistently hooks the perch and walleye (no bass around here).

I use the 1/8 or the 1/4 oz size in the Watermelon color only. Watermelon is the only color that will glow in the dark according to the online catalog. I have tried various types of plastic grubs and worms on this jig.

The grub portion of a Johnson Beetle Spin lure in the Chartreuse/Red color works better than any thing else for me. I have caught fish up to about 24″ in length with this jig and have had no problems with the hook bending.

I do not use heavier than 8 # test line. Some of the paint on the jig heads will eventually flake off. Considering how I bounce this jig on the rocks I would expect that. I have tried other brands of jigs of this type that have the spinner blade attached under the jig head.

I have had no luck with them at all. So if the “Thumper Jig” also works for you, buy extras. Since this product works well they will probably discontinue it.

I’ve used this jig in a variety of waters and found it to out produce many other jigs for walleyes. This is especially true in stained or dirty water. The extra motion and shape of the jig attracts and gets the interest of hungry walleyes.

I really like the “wire bait keeper hook” for holding on a half night crawler, found it to be very effective holding bait in place and keeping up close to the jig head. Works great with plastics as well.

I get more hook-ups because of it and see less of a need for stinger hooks, which is one less thing to deal with. A great product!.

The Jigging Rap is hands down the best jigging lure for walleye I have used. When we are over the fish, it is literally every drop, great lure! We are fishing in the summer right now, so not just a winter lure!.

Im gonna be honest, this lure is shady but it works. I have never used it for ice fishing but I am sure it would excel there too. This lure gets down in deep water fast and it catches everything. I have even caught caught fish in the dead of winter on these.

And the cat fish hit it. really hard. I think the only negative is that with all the hooks it does tend to get snagged a lot. So I have my lure retriever ready at all times when using this lure. Yeah, it’s a pain but totally worth it.

Use the retriever 2 times and it pays for itself and them some. There are not that many lures that truly do catch everything that swims. This is one of them and they should have a place in your tackle box.

Took a serious take on ice fishing this year. Got a 6×12 Cabela’s ice shelter from the gf. I bought a nice used strikemaster auger and $200 worth of supplies and a Big Buddy heater. I tried live baits such as wax worms and minnows on 5 lakes without so much as a nibble so I figure I would try one of these since it was on sale for $5 on my way to the lake.

I finally caught my first fish of the year with it! So I ordered several other colors and sizes online from TackleUSA. com and can’t wait to use them when they get here! They dance and sink with an action the fish can’t resist!.

These things work well. Nannygai, coral trout, cod, cobia are just some of the species I’ve caught with them. My only negative would be the braid leader for the hooks. Mackerel of any species will happily snip through it.

I’ve been wanting to get these items from Nomad Design for a long time. Now that I have them and use them I can confirm that they are very high quality fishing lures. With a balance of weight and strength that when thrown and receives strong bites makes it very durable and versatile.

Also, because of its striking appearance for any trophy game fish, that I really like and make it very effective.

I’ve used the Silver Shiner in 3/8, and I’ve caught bass, pike, even an over-achieving 15″ crappie on it. The hook is a light wire hook, but I didn’t have any problems, even with pike over 30″. If your drag is set right, you shouldn’t have any problems.

One of mine is so used, that it has chips of paint missing from the head and the red is gone from the hook, but it keeps producing. I’ve used it with swimbaits up to about 4-5 inches. I would recommend this.

Although this jig is a crappie magnet, it also brings out the large bluegill at Perris Lake !! The white 1/16oz dancing under a bobber really woke up the bite.

It’s hard to find good panfish jigs for my grandkids. The Little Nippers are just the right size and the patterns are great.

I don’t know about Trout but it works like magic on Hybrid Bass. I swapped out the jigs that came with my “Captain Macs” umbrella striper rigs for the smaller “Trout Magic” underspin in 1/8 oz. and the results were immediate.

It got even better when I started to include an odd one in the group either “Electric Chicken” or “Pink Glow” in the Z-Man “MinnowZ” 3 inch are so far my favorites. For the main group I like “Pearl”, “Opening Night” and “Bad Shad”.

I often catch more than one at a time, so far I’m up to three at once. These things take a beating and keep on ticking.

I have used this bait several times in the Chesapeake bay and have caught several keeper rockfish on this bait casting toward a rocky shore line. Outstanding bait I will be buying more for sure

Well made underspin jig. Strong enough to land large fish. I use them to cast along shorelines and shallows.

Good lure. Smooth casting. Comes with single hook as well as the trebles which is good as can only use trebles in lakes around here. A bit pricey so brings a tear when you lose one in the river.

I’m hard pressed to find a freshwater species besides carp that won’t hit this spinner. Walleye, Pike, large mouth, small mouth, gar, even had perch go for it. It’s probably the most versatile lure in my tacklebox.

I bought this lure from the advice of my brother. It was more expensive than the rooster tails but i thought I’d give it a try. I went on a weekend canoe/fishing trip down the elk river with 5 other friends.

We had our canoes on the bank and everyone had a line in fishing from the bank before we shoved off. BOOM!! I get the first fish, then another, then another. I caught three before we even shoved off and the guys were jealous that I had caught 3 before we even left.

The best swim jigs on the market. Ultra realistic and affordable. It catches good ones no matter the conditions. They could triple the price and I still would buy them! I don’t go fishing without one.

I like to use the 3/8 or 1/2 OZ size with a Keitech or any paddle tail bait. I throw it out, let it hit bottom and steady retrieve. When hung up on weeds I rip and and usually after that I just hold on for dear life.

Number one go to especially because it has a screw lock so it makes your baits last longer. That swooped belly makes it nice to deflect off vegetation. I haven’t bought any other types of swim jigs since.

If you’re not catching anything then there’s no fish, or you’re in the wrong area. Tight lines!.

I ordered the perch pattern and they sent me an extra in the gold color. These thing look great and they should catch for sure, cant wait for ice. I live by lake erie so I feel these are going to produce quality fish.

If I can I will comment back after this ice season. I think these will pull some jumbos.

I think this lure is in its own category in the line of Ice Fishing lures. It is a hollow lure which others are not. I think this gives the lure an action unlike any other underneath the ice. Its definitely a lure that you move a lot which makes it a very fun bait to fish! Once I got some confidence using it, it was fish on at all my local lakes.

If you have not tried this lure it’s a must have in your tackle box. This lure does it all. Verticle jigging on your favorite hard water lake or cast it like a lip less bait on open water. All around best.

This lure is perfect for fishing any coastline. Even if the guys next to me are using live bait such as squid or mackerel, this will always outperform. It’s caught untold amounts of rockfish of every variety, lingcod, sand bass, halibut, perch, and more! For 40 feet and less, use a 2 oz weight for a natural presentation.

For every additional 40 feet of depth, use a 1 oz bigger lure. So for 120 feet deep use a 4 oz. My only suggestion is to upgrade the treble hooks to something stronger. Mustad or Owner brand. You never know what you might get and I’ve been left empty handed with a straightened hook wondering what I missed.

Get an assortment of these jigs to match the colors of your local baitfish and you’ll be set.

I was so glad I had a couple of these in my tackle box when I came across some large barracuda. Nothing else was working but these. Needless to say, I added many more to my arsenal.

I’ve tried just about every jig head made from the less expensive ones in Walmart to the more expensive ones at Dick’s, Bass Pro, and the largest tackle shop on the Outer Banks. Nothing compares with the Eye-Strike/Z-Man Trout Eye for catching speckled trout, flounder, puppy drum, etc.

I’ve gotten rid of all those jig heads where I had to clean the paint out of the eyes and now use only the Trout Eye. They have the sharpest and most durable hooks by far! Get a pack or three and you too will be a convert.

Also, join the “Release Over 20” speckled trout club! The statistics on these larger fish are eye-opening and need to be released if our kids and grandkids are going to be able to enjoy fishing!!.

Warning: The bait keeper is sharp and will chew up softer baits. If you don’t hook it right the first time, you’ll need to bite your bait or grab another one. It will hold on tight, but if a fish knocks your bait down the hook, the same thing applies.

However, if you’re using ElaZtech baits, you’ll be glad you have them. Superglue will work, but I like to use another hook and pull a loop of the ElaZtech material over the hook eye to keep it in place.

(YouTube search “7 ElaZtech Hacks” and you’ll find a tutorial by ZMan. ) With all that said, I really like the Trout Eye 3/16 ounce jighead. It is very balanced allowing for different retrieving techniques.

I like to use an improved clinch knot as well as a nonslip loop knot with this jighead. I like to use it with 3-4″ DieZel Minnows, Rage Swimmers, and even Keitech Easy Shiners (These are soft and don’t hold up as well, but I love their action!).

The hook shank is right at 1″ so if you are using a larger/longer bait, I’d go with the Redfish Eye jigheads. Their hook keepers aren’t as sharp but still get the job done.

Awsome jighead for fresh and saltwater! I have paired the 1/10 oz. Jigheads with the zman 3 inch shadz in the dark stormy color. When I rigged it, the barb lined up between the top fin slot so snugly that I thought- its weedless as all getout,but no way can I get a good hook set.

Well 3 hits and 3 bass later, I was a believer! The zman shadz are buoyant enough that they have a slower fall when you stop the retrieve.

Used these with a paddle tail swimbait on a weekend at the Trent river and caught a ton of walleye. Also landed a 36 inch Pike from shore. My only gripe with these jig heads is that they’re not durable.

After a few casts the eyes start falling off, and the coating gets completely shredded on rocky bottoms. Otherwise, these jig heads are great and have a unique falling action to them. They work well, and I will be purchasing more in the future.

I have been using vmc moon eyes for 20+ years. These have not let me down. The thing I like about the sleek head is it has a longer hook shank for larger baits like I use giving me a better chance at hooking up with that next personal best! There super strong and sharp like the moon eye jig by vmc and I haven’t had a eye decal fall off a single jig head in my lifetime.

The guy who gave 1 star must have let them sit in a condition that was Unforgiving because I have some unopened pkgs of a particular color that is no longer produced that I purchased over 10 years ago and there eyes are still on and intact.

I will continue to use this jig and catch big fish!.

These jigs are the number one jig I use. In my box, I have a combination of traditional lead jigs, whistler jigs, snap jigs, and these moon eyes. I fish exclusively with with the 3/8 oz size, and absolutely kill with them compared to my other jigs.

As an example, took a trip this last weekend to Fort Peck over Memorial Day weekend, and with the blue UV jig (my favorite of the bunch), hauled in heaps of walleye, a few perch, a crappie, and a smallmouth bass over the two days I was there.

No other jig other than the orange UV moon eye even caught a fish. Usually, I run bottom bouncers and jigs, so this is my go to for jigs. The hooks hold up well to big fish and bending, although I did have a couple break on a larger walleye and the smallmouth, although that is a first for the jig ever breaking on me.

The bait holder is awesome, and does a great job keeping plastics, leeches, minnows, and crawlers on the jig. Best jig there is, well worth the price.

This was the first spoon I ever used for trout fishing, now I have about 20 of these in my tackle box. Ultra light setup with a 1/12 oz Phoebe and you’ll have yourself a great day if you hook something.

I’ve tried all sorts of spoons and rooster tails, they all work at one point or another but these in silver and gold are my go tos. Don’t mess with success.

This is a very underrated lure in my opinion as I do not see it get alot of compliments on web articles. But in my experience it is every bit as good as anything else out there for trout. It has a spinning action similar to z-rays and super-dupers.

Anywhere the trout hit z-rays or super-dupers I have also caught them on equivalent color/size phoebes. Since z-rays are not currently made anymore I use the super duper/phoebe combo with equal success.

Even in waters with no minnow forage I have caught trout on the smallest phoebes. My only complaint is I wish they came in as many colors as kastmasters and cleos.

Acme Phoebe spoons in general are excellant for trout fishing, and this color combo is my favorite, followed by plain gold. They all work depending on water color.

These are great little shad darter heads that work on just about all species. I use them with the Berkley Gulp 1″ minnows and always slay the panfish and I mean some good sized crappie as well. I have gold and silver and I use silver when the water is clear and gold when the water is murky or muddy and it works for me.

Sometimes it is hard to find 1/64 ounce or less jigheads and these always deliver.

I do purchase these every year for when I am fishing delay harvest sections. They get the job done, but the only problem I have is after a couple hookups fish start to pop off because jig gets weak, and barb bends easily.

That is why I give them a 3 star. Rig with a power worm and you will gettem’.

I have used Northland Fire-Fly jigs for many years and they are a great lure for any kind of panfish. In fact, they will catch just about anything. I have caught crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed, and yellow perch which are the fish I normally target with Fire-Flys.

But while fishing for those species I have also caught largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, brown bullhead, channel catfish, northern pike minnow, sculpin, walleye, and even a small coho.

I always keep a supply of 1/64, 1/32 & 1/16 oz jigs in my tackle box, mainly in Parakeet color.

I used these on my last local trip out ice-fishing and had great success with these. I caaught bluegills, crappies, perch, a couple of small bass, one under size wallleye, and a nice channel cat of about 2.

5 to 3 pounds. I was tipping them with waxworms which caught the majority of the panfish but then I also tried tipping the larger size jigs with a Gulp 2″ minnow and I caught one of the bass, the walleye, and a couple of the crappies on that rig.

I would highly recommend these to a friend and I am looking forward to using them in open water.

I recently purchased the 1/64 oz. pink jig with white feathers and what a crappie bait it turned out to be! I brought in a nice sized crappie on the first cast with this little jig. I’ve tried the other colors as well but this pink and white combination seems to be the one the crappie want.

I kid you not, one day last week I caught a crappie with each cast, seven times in a row! I’ve very pleased with this bait and wish I’d have bought more than just the one 3-pack of this color when I was at the store!.
