20 Best Jean Shorts For Women (2023 Updated)

I purchased the white and black color of these shorts both in size 25 which is my usual size in Levi’s and they were both a bit too big on me. I would say they run slightly large. For reference I am 5 foot and 94 pounds.

The white shorts are super cute and not see through. The black shorts I wanted to love but in person they have a big cut on the bottom left leg, like a “shark bite” hole and it doesn’t show that in the photos.

I even ordered a second pair thinking it was a defect and they had the same thing. Not sure why the photo just shows normal cut off shorts. So I did return the black pair & kept the white. I would have kept the black as well if they didn’t have the awkward cut! Other than that they seem like great quality!.

Was worried about the sizing as many reviews claimed they’re too small and others said they’re too big! Well, there was no size 26 so I went with my normal 25 and glad I did. They fit well and aren’t too large.

I’d say they fit perfectly and I like the higher rise. I find stretch denim shorts in particular a little less flattering so these to me, look great. I took away one star because the front of the “Athens” wash look great but the back don’t have any distressing in terms of the wash.

Worth buying all the same!.

I really like the 501 Premium denim and these shorts are really cute. I find 501’s in general run a little bigger than the Levis stretch denim. I ordered these in both a 24 and a 23 and needed the 23.

I will note that each pair of these seems to have very different distressing. I liked the 24’s but the 23’s had too much distressing for my liking. Unfortunately since I needed the smaller size I ended up returning both.

For reference I am 5’2” and just over 100 lbs.

These shorts are perfect and I love them so much that I have ordered 5 different colors. They’re tight but breathable and comfortable, super flattering, lay flat around my waist, and are the perfect length for looking hot but not showing my buttcheeks.

My only issue is the sizing is weird. I am 5’2 110ish lbs and wear size XS in most stores & typically size 2 in jeans. However in (most of) these shorts I’m size 24/00. The ojai top and sansome straggler are stretchy comfortable and cute and don’t have that hard/stiff jean feeling.

They let the booty breath without showing the cheeks, although they do stretch out and start to ride up and show some underbuttt if you bend over towards the end of the day. But the two toned shorts are much more stiff and feel a little extra tight, like I can’t eat a big meal while wearing them type of tight, they also have a button fly instead of a regular zipper.

The white shorts are also more like the stiff classic jean material and also have a button fly, but they fit a little bigger than the others. They’re still cute and wearable tho. I also ordered the black ones but I haven’t gotten them yet.

Gosh, where do I start? I love these shorts SO much. First off, the color is PERFECT. Secondly, they make my booty look amazing. Normally I hade non hemmed shorts bc they usually make my butt look small or flat.

These absolutely do NOT. Thirdly, the fit is SO flattering. I did deduct one star as the sizing is kinda funky. I have three pairs of Levi 721 jeans in size 25 and they fit perfect, but in these I had to buy a size 24.

They run a little large, so I had to buy multiple sizes to see what would fit best, That’s the only complaint I have and they’re otherwise perfect.

I actually did not expect to like these much because I thought the rips on the bottom would be weird (I got the Sandsom Straggler color), but I LOVE them. I had previously tried a pair of universal thread shorts and they squished my booty and had a waist gap.

The Levi’s make my butt look great and don’t have the dreaded waist gap. That said, if you are apple shaped, these are probably not for you as you may find them tight in the waist. The leg openings are relaxed (I don’t like that part to be fitted as if you just cut off a pair of skinny jeans).

I disagree with the other reviewers that say these run small. I am usually a 25, sometimes a 26 and the 25 fit perfectly. Maybe it’s just the larger sizes that run small? These are 100% cotton, traditional rigid denim with no stretch.

I expect that they will loosen with wear as that type normally does. My measurements are 27” waist and 38” hips, slim legs.

I bought these shorts because I have outgrown all of my others and I love these! I usually go for holey jean shorts, but it’s always nice to have a standard plain pair. These shorts are short, yet not too short or too long.

The only thing I am not a fan of is the lack of a zipper. Personally, I like shorts with a zipper, but these have 4 small buttons in addition to the big one. It makes it hard to go to the bathroom when I have to unbutton all of them and button them back up.

Not that big of a deal but it does make it somewhat inconvenient.

These shorts are great, but the sizing is way off compared to the ones in the lighter colour. I ordered two pairs, one in light, one in dark, but the exact same Levis shorts. The darker pair I had to exchange twice as I needed two sizes smaller.

Weird. No mention of any different sizing or stretchier fabric – which it was.

I don’t really like to wear shorts but we had a spring heatwave and I needed to try to wear shorts again. I am a plus size woman with a smaller waist so shorts are hard to find. I really like these. The shorts have some stretch and are very comfortable.

The length is good. Very happy with this purchase.

These shorts are super cute and SO comfortable! I am petite and sometimes struggle to find a good length for jean shorts (either too short or too long), but these fit perfectly, hitting mid-thigh. They also have just enough stretch to them to make them incredibly comfortable.

Definitely recommend.

I have been looking for straight cut shorts that aren’t too long but not hoochie either. Why is it a struggle to find shorts that cover you up in just the right way? These Levi’s definitely do the trick! These pair are just a tad bit longer in the back, so your bum isn’t out in the open when you bend down.

Also, if you’re one of the many people complaining it’s a button ‘zip’, you clearly don’t know anything about what makes 501s. well. 501s. that’s the statement and that’s what makes it iconic!! If you have a little pooch like me, these 501s really suck in that bottom belly and gives you a much smoother look in the front.

Highly recommend!! Note: it might feel tight in the beginning, but as with any denim, it needs warming up and next thing you know, it’s loosened up a bit. Saying that, I’d buy this at 29 instead of the recommended 28 and just belt it up.

Just to give a little more room for ‘give’.

I wear size 26 Levis 711 Skinny jeans and the jeans fits snugly at my waist – perfect fit. However, I ordered a size 26 of this Levis short and the waist was a bit big. There is a gap between my waist and the waist of the jeans so it feels like the jeans is also ‘moving around’ when I am wearing it and moving about.

not ideal and I am kinda disappointed. I dont mind the shorts being a little bit big (relaxed) on me but the waist need to fit snugly so I do not have the feeling that the shorts is moving around on my waist.

Also, I need to wear a loose top or tee in order not for the big waist of the shorts to show. I have ordered another pair in size 25. Yet to receive but am worried that waist 25 may be abit too tight.

Other than this issue, I like it overall thus ordered a size 25 to see if it would fit better. Material is that of a standard levis jeans.

The color is perfect, the cut is superb and the distressing is just right. The ultimate summer Jean short! (Note: it’s 100% cotton rigid denim with zero stretch) For reference: I’m 169cm and 64kg and I got both 27 and 28.

The 27 is a body hugging and gorgeous shaping fit. The 28 is that comfortable fit that you can spend the whole day in, lounging around without any discomfort. I have now 4 colors in the 501 shorts and this one is by far my favorite.

I bought three pairs of Aerie’s Daydream shorts last year and wore them so much so I wanted to get tons more but this year’s shorts are disappointing. First the sizing between colors is inconsistent, I found the black shorts were to small I’d need to size up the green were slightly small and the white and griege ones were slightly big but still okay in my size.

Secondly, they are just too distressed. Last year’s had a raw hem but were even all the way across whereas this year they all have that big tear on the right leg making them appear shorter than they are and a pretty big distressed spot on the buttcheek that just makes these too distressed for me to be comfortable in them and they are less classy to wear on a night out as a late 20 something.

I hope next year Aerie moves back to last year’s shorts in the level of how “distressed” they are because they were truly a mid-size girl’s dream denim short.

I love these shorts so much more than any of the other ae shorts simply bc they’re so much softer and more comfortable. They don’t ride up with a thick seam into your crotch either haha. They’re stretchy with an elastic waistband in the back.

Normally I would wear a 4-6 in shorts but these fit well as a small. I tried a medium first, but it was too big and saggy. I have a curvy figure with thicker thighs and booty. They’re not as high rise as mom shorts or 90’s boyfriend, but still cute.

I LOVE these shorts! First of all, they are so soft and very breathable. which denim shorts aren’t normally breathable. Second, I’m an above knee bilateral amputee, so finding shorts or pants that are comfortable and cute is very hard.

I usually have great success with Madewell’s curvy fit. I have a smaller, shorter torso with wide hips and athletic legs. I usually wear a 28 in Madewell bottoms. Based on previous reviews, I chose to order a size 27.

The size 27 fit with enough room in the hips and thighs; unfortunately, it was just too tight in the waist. I had to suck it in and it was still uncomfortably tight. I returned and did not exchange because I was worried the 28s would be too large elsewhere, but I cannot vouch for that, personally.

As a side note, I did think with the cuffed legs, they were shorter than the 4. 5″ inseam advertised (I didn’t know if it was 4. 5″ was measured cuffed or uncuffed) but you are able to unroll them if you prefer, which I found helpful depending on what length of shorts you prefer.

Overall, the quality was great, and the wash was perfect and versatile. In my opinion, these are certainly worth trying!.

I had high hopes for these. Reviews were good and they seemed to be the right combination of relaxed and classic jean short. But I’m the outlier here. I found these to be too big to be salvageable — too boxy, loose and just unflattering overall.

I’m a size 27 in most jeans brands (5’ 6”, 133), occasionally a 26 and occasionally a 28. I read that these ran big but still went with a 28 because I generally size up in shorts to ensure everything is covered and they fit correctly.

It’s not just that these are loose, though. The silhouette is completely off from what I was looking for — the crotch seems too long (material bunched up when I sat) yet the leg is too straight to offer the gentle A line flare of classic denim shorts.

They are a good length and the weight of the denim is what you’d expect from Madewell. I wore them around the house for a couple hours to make sure I wasn’t being too critical and really couldn’t wait to get them off.

Back they go.

This was my first “curvy” denim purchase! I never thought I could be considered curvy because my butt is so small, though I have prominent high hips. I’ve always had the problem of my jeans/shorts sagging throughout the day as well.

I measured my hip-to-waist and realized that I do fit into that category, so I decided to give them a shot. They fit around my wide hips perfectly, and balance out my small butt. They accentuate my waist like no other shorts I’ve ever worn.

There’s a little extra leg room, which I appreciate, since the stretch is minimal. No sagging either, even with all day wear! I took a risk and ended up going down from my usual size, since there’s more room in the hip area.

They fit perfectly. Madewell, please consider making a curvy version of every denim piece! There are not enough to choose from, and you’d definitely be getting more orders from me! I seriously want to replace all of my denim now!.

Let me start by saying that these fit great. They are a good length- not too short or long- and they don’t gape at the waist. Unfortunately, the frayed hemline is very uneven and looks odd. I understand that they are supposed to look “distressed” but the fray goes up to various heights along both the front and back of the shorts and is even missing in some spots.

Upon looking closer, the pictures do show this, I just didn’t notice it when purchasing and want to point it out to anyone else who might be bothered by it. They aren’t frayed enough for this to look intentional- I thought I got a defective pair.

I ordered these jean shorts last season and fell in love! Unfortunately when I ordered another pair this year they were no where near the same, so they went back. Material felt thin and cheap, and the cut and size was way off.

Even the inside labels were different compared to my older pair and what’s in the ad. Seems like J. Crew changed manufactures using lesser quality materials. Sadly I wouldn’t recommend these jean shorts this year.

These are very nice quality, thicker material. I listened to the other reviews saying they had some stretch and to size down. They were WAY too tight I couldn’t even zip and button them lol. So I can’t speak to whether they had any stretch after wear since I couldn’t get them on.

I would say they run a tad small. I will re-order and get the 29 instead of the 28. I have a ton of cut offs from different brands, several from J. Crew and I have to say these are best quality and more like a solid pair of non-stretch jeans vs the usual thin kind of cut offs.

Maybe get two sizes if you are unsure what the best fit would be.

Okay so I have been SEARCHING for shorts that fit right for literally years and idk what kind of sorcery AF is putting into their jeans and shorts but these are. amazing. I have a really hard finding shorts that fit right because I have a smaller waist and thicker, muscular thighs.

That being said, ya girl needs and wants room to move. I thought the mom shorts were it but they always rode up on me and were a little too short. Anyways, these are perfect. They fit great in the waist and they give me some room in the legs and I never find myself pulling them down.

You won’t regret. I went in store to try them on because everyone was saying they were big but. not in my case! I am 5’7 and 140 lbs for reference.

So I love the cut and the fit! The issue for both pairs in different colors that I bought is the same… the button fly doesn’t stay buttoned! I have had other button fly jeans so that didn’t bother me like the other reviews.

But when I was trying them on while trying to button the second hole, the first button would pop out. Then if I could even get those two buttoned the second would pop out when trying the third. There was no way all 5 would have stayed buttoned in the 5 minutes I tried, let alone all day! So I think I’m going to have to return unfortunately.

They’re so cute and I’m bummed it won’t work out just because of the button fly.

Very cute shorts, the 4 inches is great for a little extra coverage. I am always a size 27 in abercrombie. Usually with the curve love jeans they fit better around my waist. These are slightly looser.

I’m 125lb, my waist is 25/26in and my hips are 39in. I don’t like them to be too tight around my hips and legs personally so I wouldn’t size down. However if you prefer that or have smaller hips/legs then I would think you’d want to size down for a more snug waist line.

Besides that they seem to be great quality and are prettt comfortable. Looking forward to warm weather to wear them!.

I loved the shorts completely!!! So stretchy so comfortable I bought them in the medium denim dark denim and black. The black ones were a little tight when I try to button them but not that tight I feel like once I break them in they will loosen up.

The dark denim and the Medium denim literally look the same I didn’t really recognize any difference between the two truly thought I got two of the same pair of jeans so I’m glad I have two pairs with a literally look exactly the same so if you’re not looking to purchase two of the same pairs I would definitely just recommend me to getting medium or dark unless you don’t mind.

Other than that though the shorts were really cute.

These come up far too small! I am between a 12-14 since having my baby but ordered the 14 so they would be comfortable. They arrived and I immediately looked at them and thought they looked too small but tried them on anyway and I couldnt even get the button to the button hole to do them up.

I am very disappointed as love H&M especially the clothes for my children which usually come up big. I have returned these now awaiting a refund. But it really doesnt do well for people’s self esteem especially if they have been trying to lose weight! My eldest daughter is a size 8-10 and they were too tight on her also! I have since bought shorts elsewhere and for perfectly in a size 12.

I was tempted to buy again and go up a size but there is absolutely no way I am buying a 16-18 when I know that is not my size.

These fit well. I have worn Vigoss for years. My favorite fit shorts and pants. Love that yoi cam buy them in a long plus size!

The distressed look on these were more like holes very near the crotch area. If I put my hands in the pockets, I could wave at you. RETURNED

I bought and returned these shorts 2 times on the website before I gave up. I have this style of shorts in orange, white, green and light blue, so I am familiar with them. I purchased them in my size (2) the first time and returned them for a 2.

5. They were too small as well. I returned them. I went to the store the third time & tried on the 3’s. They were too big. For some reason this particular style in dark navy run much smaller than the other colors.

So disappointed.

I own three other pairs of the girlfriend shorts, two denim and one white. I ordered this additional denim pair when they were on sale. I ordered the same size, 2. 5, but the new pair fits snug and the denim material is different.

My body hasn’t changed and the older shorts fit me great. I thought this would be a reliable purchase by much to surprise is was not.

Love the Chico’s girlfriend jeans so thought I would try the shorts. Yay! The shorts fit just like the jeans – super comfortable and cute. I’m giving them a 4 star rating because the stitching around both front pockets was frayed.

I bought these shorts in a Size 27 and am very happy with the length and fit. However, on me, they are slightly lower than mid-rise as they hit the center of my hips vs. the top. Also, and this seems to be an issue with any white denim shorts I’ve purchased, the material is a little stiff and could be softer.

Love the comfort, fit and length but they were quite small. Always buy the same bottom size in Gap but not these. Returning for larger size.
