Best James Michener Books Ranked (2024 Updated)

Well, this is a fairly old book. In fact, this is about the fifth copy of the paperback version I’ve purchased. It is so interesting, I read it a couple of times a year and now and then have to replace my copy.

This story is wonderful history (if that’s your interest) and Michener did such deep research for all his books – this one being no exception. I recommend this book as a fascinating read.

I think that the best way to read The Source is to ask yourself these two questions after reading each chapter. 1) Are the historical characters similar enough to any of the current characters to support the idea that history repeats itself, suggesting that people refuse to learn and/or obey God’s law, or perhaps don’t understand the lessons that the law teaches? 2) Do divine events in The Source serve a consistent purpose through time? If so, does that mean that the old law still possesses significance today?.

One can read this book again and again throughout a lifetime and still find new ideas and visions of the Hebrew struggles, their wisdom ensuring survival. Fascinating from every aspect. .

Talk about missing the mark! I guess I expected to read about the PEOPLE of the Caribbean but what I got was a dry, flat, sad account of a bunch of greedy, bigoted Englishmen who conveniently convinced themselves that the rest of us have no souls and therefore could be brutalized, exploited, and treated like worthless animals.

Few characters showed a hint compassion for anyone but themselves. Selfishness and self-righteousness carried the day. This book left me feeling like organized religion has a lot to answer for!.

Book is very detailed fictionalized account of historical events in Carribean. That said, a lot of research seems to have gone into this as Michener’s stories seem to pull from much research.

I bought it for a friend for a gift because she & hubby are going to make a trip to the Carribean soon. I had read it and knew it was a great book. Made me want to go there, though that will not happen, I’m sure.

She had wanted to read it before she went, as she had heard about it. To read Michener’s books before visiting someplace he has written about, is an excellent idea; enhances the trip. Said she was very happy to get it because she has been so busy that she probably wouldn’t have had time to get out and get it for herself.

Sooooo, GREAT GIFT in this case!!!.

I originally read this book un the 1960″s, and decided to read it again, as I had recommended it to my grandson. It is as good a read as when I originally read it

Took a couple of weeks to finish, just what I like. Engrossing, captivating.

An excellent novel. In keeping with the standard set by Michener throughout his writing career.

James Michener is/was a fine writer and this book is one of his best. There is a portion of the book that deals with illegal immigration and the problems could have been written about TODAY!

The novel Texas was sent to me in great shape and quickly! I am reading it again after a many years. Thank you!!

I purshaed this book for an old friend from Texas, but now live in Arizona, who never read this book. I know that he is loving it. The new prints are only in paper back, and for a gift the hard back was a better choice.

As i recall, this hard cover book, Centennial, by James Michener was described as new. Perhaps it had never been read. The dust cover was a bit worn. But the pages in the book, though clean, were different lengths and widths.

and the the edges were rough and a bit soiled. Perhaps the book was a discard due to the varied length and width of the pages. The top of the page edges were dyed green while the bottom edges were manila.

I bought Centennial by James Michener to read and to stand with my other Michener hardback books. Cosmetically, it was a disappointing purchase. I paid a higher price for it because it was “new. ” Apparently it was a discard because of the flaws in its production.

The events in the book occur very close to where I live so there is a compelling reason for me to read the book. It is enthralling. I wonder how many of the scientific things that Michener cites have been updated and changed since the book was written.

Will have to research that. Enjoyable.

Very good historical fiction. A real eye opener as to how the US grew as it expanded west. It also made me aware of how poorly the government treated the Native Americans.

Michner is a prolific writer of words. and as a result the print in a pocketbook edition is really tiny. it was bold which helped. I’ve loved his Hawaii and I sort of expected the same. instead it was a different look at the participants in WW2 in this theatre.

He’s a fine story teller and I guess this was at least partially real and not 100% fiction. There were some surprises. and I feel certain he would not have won a pulitzer if written today. I was 100% happy I got to read and sent it to my son the Retired Colonel.

My husband and I are huge Michener fans and were very pleased to be able to purchase a book that was his first one published. It is actually in very good shape, especially for a paperback, and we’re already enjoying it.

I think it’s good for people to know how our troops fared in the islands during World War II. We thank you for this opportunity to own this classic book.

This is the first book that I can truly remember reading. It was borrowed from a relative at the age of 12. For some reason, it has never really escaped my memory. So to me, on a personal level, it is truly unforgettable.

A collection of various stories, with a mixed lot of characters, not the least of which is Nellie Forbush and her relationship with Emile de Beque. It is the basis for the play (Pulitzer prize winner) and movie South Pacific.

It is also the book that rocketed James Michener to world-wide success and accalim. His style of writing is very accessable, in a casual manner. His true life experiences during WW II play a key role in bringing these characters to life.

For pure enjoyement, and for some valuable insights in the human condition, this book is highly recommended. I would certainly say that it is more than worth-while reading. Some stories are more developed than others, but that only adds to the enjoyment level.

So if you have any doubts at all, reading this would certainly be time well spent. Perhaps its simple escapism, but this book beats by yards what is now passed off to a gullible public as ‘good writing’.

Was told about this book by a colleague; it is classed as a children’s book by an author I have never read previously. Found a copy on the WOB site and decided to try it; surprised how much I enjoyed reading it.

“Witches are not so delicate,” I said. Circe is hands-down one of the best books I have ever read. I instantly fell in love with the story and characters and Madeline Miller’s distinctive prosaic style of writing (which makes this book easily quotable).

Circe is a story of a lesser god outshone by those around her. After discovering witchcraft she uses her new-found powers to turn her old lover’s wife into a monster. Threatened by these powers, Zeus orders Circe to be banished to the island Aiaia for eternity.

First and foremost, it is a story of one woman’s life and her journey through love, motherhood, pain and desire. There was also a sort of satisfactory feeling when Circe , who has been overlooked and belittled her whole life, finally gets some vengeance.

I cannot express in words how good it was. All I can say is READ IT. Especially if you love mythology. 5/5 stars.

I truly don’t know where to begin but I definitely finished this book with a heavy heart. Not on the same level as ‘The Song of Achilles’ but enough where all I wanted to do was give Circe a massive hug ☹️ Basically-Circe is the daughter of the Titan Helios, and in seeking companionship in her immortal life, she is exiled to the island of Aiaia as punishment for certain actions.

While unfamiliar with her story, I found Circe’s relationship with Daedalus and Odysseus both differently sweet. Though her memories of Daedalus always made me sad 🥺 With all the things she went through I’m glad with how Circe’s story ended.

I don’t think my heart would have survived if it ended in tragedy even though there were a few times I held my breath expecting the worst 😓.

Fantastic book. Highly recommended. I listened to an interview with the author, then bought and listened to the audiobook. Was so impressed that I purchased the hard copy and have been recommending this book to my (adult) children and their partners and other friends.

Because the author is not a medical professional, some of his explanations and details became “aha” moments when he gives details/explanations that the professionals don’t think to include because, while it may be basic (almost intuitive) knowledge to them, it isn’t for the general public.

He does NOT dumb things down, but creates understanding with his explanations of why and how things happen in meaningful and easily understandable language. I am far more conscious of my breathing now and have created several healthy practices and memory joggers that I use daily and feel much better for them.

Everyone should read this book. It’s engaging right the way through and explores a subject so fundamental to life, you will be surprised, enlightened, empowered – and will know so much more about the power of breath by the time you have finished this book! From my perspective as a yoga teacher, this is the best most inclusive, informative and readable book out there on this subject.

It is well backed up by research and very respectful of ancient knowledge. Should be required reading for all medical practitioners!.

Breath is a fascinating journey into a typically overlooked territory for most of us. We take breathing for granted yet it is imperative for living out the day, and most of it do it badly. The results are poor health in many ways, which have alternative explanations–or no explanation (can you say idiopathic?) High blood pressure.

Diabetes. Sleep apnea. Waking up at night to pee. Misaligned teeth. Obesity. Chronic stuffed up nose. Yes, all related to and some caused by faulty breathing and can be cured by better breathing. This book could improve your life or the life of someone you love.

LOVE LOVE LOVE! This is one of the best series I have read. I’m onto my 3rd read of it and it honestly still hasn’t gotten boring. I absolutely love the box set container, it’s so pretty and looks stunning sitting on my bookshelf.

Would definitely recommend getting this series if you’ve read other Sarah J Maas works.

This series is such a great one to read. This series is about a girl named Celaena Sardothien and her journeys of being adarlans greatest assassin. You see her going through pains both emotional and physical as she continues to live the best that she can.

I would classify this series as fantasy and adventure. This book keeps you turning the pages to know what will happen next and that is one of the things I love most about it. With so many twists and turns I am certain you will love this book as much as the rest of us.

I was really excited for the books to arrive and when it did (very fast delivery), it was wonderful! The packaging was with great care and the books themselves were in immaculate condition. I then proceeded to buy more books from Booktopia.

James Henry Trotter was a happy child until his parents died and he was forced to go live with his aunts, Sponge and Spiker. Both women are a real nightmare because they keep him locked up, they work hard, they do not feed him well and they punish him for everything.

One day a man gives James a bag with magic balls and tells him that they will fulfill their wishes but, unlucky, they fall at the foot of a peach tree in the yard and the child sees it as his choice to have a better life disappears.

The next day, the peach grows a peach and the magic is that it does not stop growing until it is really giant. It is this fact that will begin what will be the greatest adventure James has had in his life.

Along with a group of giant insects (A Centipede, a Grasshopper, a Spider, a Worm, a Ladybug, a Silkworm and a Light Worm) will embark on a trip aboard the giant peach sky, sea and land. It is a quick adventure in which inconveniences arise at every moment that make the group have to think of creative ideas not to die.

The ideas are fantastic and that gives the magic touch to reading. In addition, you will meet some incredible creatures that, at least I have never read in any other book. One of the details that I loved is that there are several parts that are written in verse and are really fun to read aloud because they rhyme perfectly.

I like the end of Roald Dahl’s books where he mixes reality with fantasy because for children it is very easy to believe in these things thanks to their beautiful innocence.

This is a great book. My family loves it. It is a great read-aloud-to-your-children type of story. This version does have one unexpected glitch. While I love the idea of peach colored text, almost like you’re in the peach, I found it rather difficult to see the words especially in the dim light of my child’s room at bedtime and in the dimly lit classroom at read-to-me time.

Be sure to have reading glasses and a light ready.

This is a beautiful hardcover edition of James and the Giant Peach. I purchased a copy of this recently for my private library collection. My child loves this story, its very entertaining for all ages.

A great story to read at bedtime. The quality of this edition are top of the class, very affordable. If you havent read this book to your child, why not grab this edition, its truly fantastic.

My niece gave my daughter the first book in this series. My daughter became enthralled instantly. She has never read a whole book series and usually sticks to graphic novels. She will occasionally read a chapter book but not often.

She begged for this full series. I was delighted to oblige her. It was out of stock most places and she was visible shaken at the thought of there being a time lapse between her reading each book! I thought, wow, this is good.

I’ve been waiting for a series to really capture her attention like this and expand her reading away from graphic novels some. Not that I don’t like them but I wanted her to see how enjoyable bigger, wordier books can be.

I found the series here on Target ready to ship! We even got it a day early which was perfect because she had just finished the 1st book. That was a little over a week ago and she’s already on the 4th book.

She is so proud of herself and so in love with these books. I believe some themes may be a bit mature in these. I’ve only read about 30 pages of the companion novel to the selection set (1st three books).

It’s called happily ever after and sold separately. I think it is fine for my daughter as she’s read some books already with very mature themes. She is 11 and a half. Like anything else, you are the best judge of what’s appropriate for your child, there are plenty of excerpts online to read a few pages.

I had listened to the stories before on audio book, and it kept me wanting to hear more. They were very well written, exciting and romantic without all of the sex they seem to want to put into all of the books nowadays.

The story line was very compelling, and the different aspects were explained along the way very well. I liked it so much that I bought this set for my granddaughter who is a reader and in 1st year college now.

It was exciting enough to keep me going, and wondering about what was coming next when I had to stop listening for awhile, so I thought it might do the same for her. As I said it wasn’t full of sex like so many are, but the intrigue was enough to make it well worth the journey.

It had quite a few humorous spots as well. Very good. Highly recommend for an enjoyable reading night in, but if you have to put it down for work or other ‘life’ things, you are able to, until you can get back to it again.

this was an incredible book!! It is all about making women’s voices heard. I love this author! she is inspiring as she acknowledges women and that they need to be heard!!

I got this book to read for my book club. I like it so far! Its different from any other books Ive read by Sue Monk Kidd! The book is in very good condition.

Package came in a great state, the books were protected by the box. The cover of each book is a bit flimsy and thin. It was easily bended and wrinkled without putting a lot of pressure so it was a bit disappointing.

However, I do recommend this complete set of Maze Runner.

I’m currently reading this series and it is brilliant! i’ve watched the film trilogy and always wanted to read the books! i highly recommend, they keep you invested and on your toes! James Dashner is excellent.

Fabulous in-depth exploration of the Maze runner story. Better than the movies! Great value for money. Fast delivery.

while the story is good and continues the series, the amount of foul language is very distracting and unnecessary. i wouldn’t let a young adult read this book because of the language in it.

I always enjoy Patterson’s books and this one I gave to someone else to read and they are very happy with it.

I enjoy the facts and fiction used in Micheners writing, so Alaska is no exception. He brings a new perspective to this story (from the point of view of a salmon, of all things) and does his usual storytelling by taking the reader through the history of Alaska from the mastodons to (relatively) present-day inhabitants.

A great read if you have traveled to Alaska or are considering a trip!.

This is the second book I have read by James A Michener and the description on the cover is very close to the truth. The story of Alaska unfolds in a mixture of fact and fiction, with the glorious backdrop of the scenery, wildlife and seasons to keep you interested.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a really compelling story, mixed in with the history of the place and its occupants. A five star read, in my opinion.

A truly great story. This book was in good condition. But compressing all these words in a paperback, makes for very tiny letters, which are difficult to read. I recommend you find a hard copy of this book, which has bigger letters.

The book arrived in an acceptable period of time. It was in good condition (although the print on some pages were very badly faded due to age I suppose), but generally the print is still in good condition.

It is in my opinion very good value for money, and I will most certainly buy from WOB again. Thank you for a pleasant buying experience.

I read this book 7 years ago. I saw on internet lately and wanted for my small library. I was a history and political science major in college. Book encompasses my interest in development of the USA.

A well researched historical novel that gives a vivid picture of the history of the Chesapeake Bay over the centuries. Have read the book twice already and bought this copy because I gave my last book to a friend to read.

Museums in the Chesapeake Bay such as in St. Michaels and Solomons Island reflect the history described by Michener.

This was a fascinating read, tracing the story of South Africa right back to hunter-gatherer days up to the days of apartheid. Michener gives us the history from a human perspective, through the lives of families.

He tries to let us see the history from the point of view of the main different factions though really what we see is from the point of view of the British and that of the Boers. I read this book in conjunction with my first visit to South Africa and found it immensely helpful in understanding the country better.

I would have found a history book too dry and reading this brought the history to life by covering not just the main events but the impact they had on the different areas of South African society. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone wishing to have a ‘potted history’ of South Africa.

It is a thoroughly engaging read. The reason I have given it 4 instead of 5 stars is due to the fact that the point of view of black and coloured South Africans does not have equal space in the book.

However that may well be because these people had little say and hence little impact or influence on most of the historical events of recent centuries – so perhaps I am judging too harshly.

Interesting book having lived in the Republic for 10+ years it brings back fond memories, not yet finished but well written. Thanks Roger

Alongside Hawaii also by Michener one of the finest books I have read, given me by my father during the 1980’s.

I recalled this book from when I was quite young frequenting a library with my dear old Dad, sadly, now, long gone. He always went for the big tomes. Fifty years on, I thought Id see what he liked about this book and so found this copy.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the fictional journey behind the formation of Hawaii. Thanks Dad for introducing me to this classic novel albeit decades after I remember you sitting by the open fire, feet up, cuppa in hand, engrossed in reading it.

I have now ordered a copy of Shogun, another of your favourite novels. Theses are not modern books and the authors are deceased but nevertheless their novels are worth a read, after all, your Dad is seldom wrong.

I read this book back in the late 60’s. Loved it so much I bought another copy to read it again. It is a great novel, a great story and this is an excellent author. Prepare to take some time to read as it is a thick book but so worth the read.

I have read this book several times over the past 50 years and enjoyed it every time. Copies are increasingly hard to find and approaching my 83 rd birthday thought I would have a probably final read of it.

I will probably retain this copy just in case the urge comes over me at hopefully a much later date. Good reading to whoever does follow as its a good yarn and well worth the time it takes to read it.

C. J. Box is at the top of my list of authors. This latest book is a hit. I read it in one day. Could not put it down. Great writer and great story. I hate it that Nate and his family have to go off grid, but who knows what the drug lords will send next.

Highly recommended book and series.

This is another high quality, cliff-hanger despite game warden Joe Pickett just trying to do the right thing. The stunning Wyoming landscape and its people are vividly brought to life as Joe battles the odds to defend his family and friends.

Still my favourite author! He can weave a story better than Harris Tweed! C. J. Box started this series a long time ago and the best thing he did back then was create the characters that are so believable I want to go to Wyoming and knock on their doors!! I can’t wait for the next book.
