20 Best Jacket For Winter Hiking (2023 Updated)

Perfect jacket for what it is—probably wouldn’t wear it out casually—it looks nice, but, this is definitely a technical piece of gear. I was looking for something that I can run in with just one layer underneath when the weather drops below 32.

This jacket is incredible–probably would work with a technical short sleeve t-shirt for anything 32-40. I’ve been wearing with a long sleeve technical t-shirt when the weather is in the teens —yesterday with 18 mph winds it felt like 5 and I was toasty warm with just my Craft base layer.

Plenty of ventilation in the back panel —-and jacket does well to wick sweat away from base layer. Most of my trail runs are 45 minutes to an hour and a half and this jacket stays fairly dry. Best cold winter jacket I have ever owned—another winner from TNF.

5’5″ 180 – broad shoulders and athletic build and the medium fits perfect.

I have been running in this jacket since it was delivered about 3 weeks ago. It’s still super cold here in CO so I wear a down vest over it, but it’s become the perfect pair until it warms above 20 degrees! I love the color and the soft outside of the NF jacket.

Thanks for adding pockets to stuff gloves when I warm up after a couple miles. I also like that the cuffs cover well, but are not too tight as with other jackets so that I can still check my Garmin and see my stats.

I’m 5’2″ and 120 lbs. The small was an exact fit standing. But I needed more shoulder room to swing my arms so I ordered a medium and glad I did!.

I bought this because of the lighter/venting material in the back and under side of the arms to use with activities. It worked well while I was biking in cooler weather and I had a small pack on my back.

I like the deep pockets but find myself wishing they had zippers so I can’t lose stuff even though I haven’t lost anything out of them yet. The pockets have the same light insulation toward the outside of the pocket which helps keep my hands warm.

I am 5’7″ 125 # and had to buy a Large due to my broad shoulders and be able to bend my arms at the elbow without being too tight.

I wanted to love this jacket. It is an amazing jacket – high quality materials and fill, DWR, superbly crafted, great semi-long length, long arms, awesome hood with brim!, everything near perfection – I’d say the best built lightweight down jacket.

However, it is simply too tight across the chest and back if you have a wider back / chest. As noted by many others, it cuts into the armpits and lat area. I sadly had to return it. If Rab could just make it one inch wider across the upper chest area it would be perfection.

I don’t know why but they make thier size Large for a 43 inch chest, whereas every other manufacturer seems to make Large fit a 44 inch chest. I have never had this problem with any other size L from any of the other major jacket makers.

For context, I am a slim 6′-0″ 170 lbs, but have a classic v-shaped (climber) upper body / back. I wear size L in all other tops & jackets, size 44 dress jacket, 16/34 in dress shirts. If you are looking at a size Large and have a 42″ chest or smaller this is an amazing jacket and you’d be crazy not to get it.

Be aware it does have zipper on the left which is semi-annoying. Sorry, Rab – I really wanted to keep this jacket & would’ve also ordered an Electron Pro had it fit. Please make your stuff an inch larger in upper back/chest!.

This is my new go to urban parka for our Canadian climate. It is warm when walking our dogs at -18 with layers underneath. With a strong wind I find using a shell over top is my personal preference to reduce wind chill.

The parka is light weight. The first couple of times wearing it while driving I actually had to look and make sure I had put on a coat. It is great for running errands … warm when driving and walking around outside and not over heating while in shops.

The hood fits my head well and when completely zipped up covers my nose nicely without being tight. I am 5’4” 118 Lb with an athletic build. Broad shouldered and slim in the hips. Many coats I need a med.

for my shoulders and the hip area is excessive. The cut of this parka is great for my build and there is room in the hip area but still flattering with my slimmer hips. It runs big. I purchased an XS and have room to layer if needed but it looks and feels nice with just a shirt or sweater under it.

The parka stretches as needed without feeling tight. I find mountain Hardware stretchdown runs big as I also have the stretch down pant in XS. Both these items are very comfortable in any situation I have used them in.

I have used both as second layers for downhill skiing with shell jacket and pant over top. I am really enjoying the versatility this parka offers and the colours are true to the photos. I would purchase this parka again!.

Found this beauty in a columbia outlet. I normally dont go for shorter waisted jackets but it is extremely light weight and shockingly durable. Soft as a feather, it took an absolute beating on a stormy costal vacation.

Im a huge northface fan and would compare it to a slightly more durable than triclimate, took 3 hours of constant PNW ocean coastal rain to soak through the fabric. If you layer underneath sucker feels like a windwall too.

I will say it runs big. I have an XS, but am normally S/M. 5’5 133 with wider hips. I was layering 2 smaller pullover jackets underneath it and never had any mobility issues nor look like a marshmallow.

LADIES THE HOOD ZIPS UP TO OVER THE BRIDGE OF YOUR NOSE! Absolutely amazing for keeping hair dry and not getting wind burn. Such a killer jacket. Wish they had the red one but love my gray/black one!.

I was looking for a down jacket to replace and old Rab jacket I had. This jacket is much lighter weight than I expected. My previous Rab was also 700 fill but this feels like half the weight (and this one is longer).

It is missing details shown on the photos. The jacket I received is so much lighter/less puffy than the website photos. Mine has no hood cinch, the hood on the jacket I received has the same small trim as the sleeve cuffs.

Also mine has no inner pockets. It does keep me warm on my trip to/from work. I like the generous fit and stretch. I can easily sit in the car and drive without having to unzip it from the bottom to get leg movement, and issue with a different parka I own.

The outer fabric is very thin and doesn’t feel like it’ll withstand wear-and-tear but for my intended casual commuter use, it’s ok. I haven’t washed it yet so I can’t speak to the down shifting which other reviewers seem to have.

i bought this for my husband who is normally a xl/2x. i ordered in a 2x just to be safe and it fits comfortable. the only negative is that it’s a little short. he is 6’3 so maybe he just has a long torso…it’s not “cropped” or super noticeable or anything but like an extra inch or 2 longer would’ve been cool.

other than that it’s a great coat for fall. definitely not thick enough for these wisconsin winters though.

I bought this for my husband who refuses to wear a coat despite the harsh Pittsburgh winters (and is always the first one to catch a cold). It’s the perfect thickness not too puffy, not too thin. And fits true to size.

This is my second Junction North Face jacket. Nice lightweight and warm jacket. One minor complaint – the prior version had an interior gather on the sleeves while the new version doesn’t. Despite this, I’d recommend it for purchase.

I bought this to replace a winter coat I had for at least 8 years. When I first picked up this jacket, I thought “This is too lightweight to be effective. ” However, after having worn it multiple times with weather in the 20s and with wind, I have no doubt I made the right choice.

I can’t believe a jacket this light weight is this warm. And what I love most about it (besides keeping me warm) is that it is not bulky at all (like typical winter coats). At nearly 60 years of age, I can honestly say this is the best winter coat I’ve ever purchased.

I really love this jacket. Its the right amount of thickness that doesn’t interfere. The lining is cool to touch, but quick adapts to body temperature. There’s a soft fleece lining that cradles the back of your neck and keeps it warm.

You could probably keep this jacket on all day if you wanted and be the most comfortable person in the room. The Texas snowstorm was totally unexpected, but this jacket was all I needed. I could play with my daughter in the snow, stay warm while heading to work, and buy groceries among the chaos.

Somehow I ended up finding Moosejaw online and after much debate, I settled on the Apex Elevation Jacket and prayed my son would be happy with it and that it would fit! I needed a waterproof jacket for an upcoming trip. I usually wear a medium and ordered a medium and it fit great. I tested the waterproofness by wearing it in the shower for a good 30 sec with a shirt underneath.

Took off the jacket and the shirt was dry except for the water that got in through the neckline and a bit that seeped through the right chest zipper. Overall worth the money.

I’ve had this same jacket for years and it’s great. Definitely waterproof, not just water resistant. My husband kept wearing mine, even though it didn’t fit. So I bought him his own jacket. Great for hiking.

Keeps you dry but it’s breathable.

This is my first Fjällräven coat and subject to a number of drawbacks, I have to say it’s a really nice jacket. A bit heavy (2. 75 lbs) but still less than comparable coats by other manufacturers and still light enough and non-bulky enough to hike in.

The workmanship is superb and the coat looks great, fits almost perfectly (a bit baggy in the torso, easily rectified by layering), and is fairly warm with 15 oz of 700 fill power down (M). The coat’s rugged fabric feels like it should be waterproof but it’s only water resistant.

The hood fits very snugly except that there’s an opening at the neck and collar which lets cold air in. However, cinching the hood draw strings tight makes for almost an airtight sealed hood around your head, leaving only a small portion of your face exposed, a very nice design for sure.

A neck gaiter would also address this issue. The pockets are adequate, nothing special. Some cons: the snap buttons that lock the zipper flap in place, tighten the cuffs very snugly around your wrists, and hold the pocket flaps down, can be hard to operate; the zipper, although substantially-sized, is fairly hard to engage; the retro-style hem and hood cinch strings dangling down are not particularly attractive (although the hood strings can be hidden inside the collar).

The coat’s 15 oz of down is substantial but since it’s only 700 fp, there’s a limit to how much cold (absent layering) this coat will protect against. However, on balance, this is a meticulously-crafted jacket with a cool retro look that should last a long time.

Any coat the heavier predecessor of which was conceived in a snow cave bivy in bitterly cold Northern Sweden in the early 1970s has got to be a great coat! Recommended for sure.

I ordered this as my 500 fill down jacket was just not proving enough for my first Midwest winter. great timing as the weekend after I received this I woke up to -21 degrees! This thing is crazy warm.

the instant you put it on you start to heat up. You can snug the hood until only your eyes are showing which was perfect for the strong winds we have here. However, once you warm up enough to pull the hood down and loosen the zipper a bit, the zipper ends are stiff and kind of uncomfortable, they press against your face or neck, even with the hood all the way loosened.

This is fantastic for really cold weather but can be a bit much when it warms up a little. It runs a slightly big, I usually wear a large in jackets but I ordered a medium in this & it is still just slightly roomy.

It definitely is not slimming, ha! In super cold weather though you will not care about that. The material feels so soft, way nicer than any of my many other down jackets. The deep pockets are great.

And I like that this is a blend of down + down alternative too (and their down is always ethically sourced). I love how it goes below my knees, the only thing that got cold out walking the land was my hands! I love when jackets have snaps in addition to a zipper as well, for versatility.

Perfect if I just want to throw it on to run out and get the mail without zipping my whole self into a cocoon. The zipper feels super sturdy, as does the rest of the construction. I got this on sale with a steep discount otherwise I would probably never have ordered it, but it will now officially be my “big coat”! The Swedes apparently know what they are doing when it comes to coats!.

First I bought the Expedition Down Jacket. I looked like the Michelin Man! I am short and small and just disappeared in the jacket! The Down Lite jacket was perfect! I will NEVER be cold! The 800-fill down does the job.

Yet, it doesn’t feel too heavy. The hood snaps back to keep it out of the way. The cuffs snap tight to keep air out. Pockets are everywhere. It is easy to zip. It has a cool Fjallraven patch. This is the best jacket I have ever owned! I spend a lot of time outside.

When it’s not very cold out I wear it with a light tee shirt underneath just so I can wear my jacket and not be too hot. I bought and returned 4 other jackets before choosing the Expedition Down Lite Jacket.

This is the Ultimate jacket for me.

Purchased for my 13yr old son and it is perfect for the winter. He really loves the Legend Earth colour too, something different to just another black winter coat. Both of us are really happy with it and good value too.

Surprisingly quite warm, great for outdoor activities! Great football coaching jacket. Good for some weather protection. Would purchase again.

Got this for my partner to walk the dogs. Really nice coat, fit is good and it’s warm however it does say it’s waterproof and it just isn’t which is very disappointing as he gets wet on a 15 minute walk.

I can’t begin to say how much I love this coat. I’m suuuuper picky, having worked in outdoor retail for years. It’s lightweight, warm, the crimson lining is stunning, slides with layers easily. It does run a touch snug through the middle and upper arms by about a 1/2 size, so round up your size if you’re looking to layer much.

Also, the stuff pocket is too long and narrow to be practical, so plan to use a small separate stuff sack for packing on the fly. But it packs wonderfully: already tested stuffing it into my carry-on while traveling.

Total whiz. Too bad this is a discontinued color combo: it goes with everything. Enjoy!.

This layers great. It is not as warm as I thought, but with a long sleeve layer underneath, it is very good. It’s not thick, but keeps the wind out. I like the high neck. It’s goose down so compresses nicely.

Great for post trail/run workouts and chilly hikes.

So bummed about this jacket. It is exactly what I need, but the Small is too roomy. I am 5’4 inches, 120 pounds, broad-shouldered, 34B, 26 inch waist. I was swimming in this jacket even with a thick sweater on.

Oh well, maybe I can find an XS soon:).

I was looking for a good winter jacket that wasn’t too voluminous and I finally found it! It’s nice and warm coat and it’s good against wind and rain. The only downside is that it’s not black. Its more of a washed out black.

I’m overall satisfied with the purchase.

Husband is really pleased with his jacket. He’s usually a large but after reading reviews I ordered medium and it fits him perfectly. Only reason not scored five is because the time we had to wait for delivery.

Don’t recall seeing anything on the website warning it will take 3 weeks.

Bought for 15 year old granddaughter for school as needed a waterproof jacket. Very stylish and fits very nice. She is really pleased with it. Warm and wind proof too. A great buy and worth the money

Love my jacket. It’s very waterproof so I don’t have to worry about being soaked by sudden storms. It’s gorgeous and highly functional. Like all waterproof jackets, I find it less breathable but that is to be expected.

A really lovely waterproof jacket with such a pretty lining and at an excellent price. The colour goes with everything so it is very practical and smarter than your average waterproof for about-town wear with its waist shaping.

The wind seemed to cut through more than I had anticipated.

Was looking for new hooded shell for lift-access skiing. Bought a bunch to try on at home with layers, pants, and helmet. This was just a litttttle too thick. I prefer to layer up/down depending upon weather.

Great helmet-sized hood, and love the left forearm lift pass pocket. I’ve had two shells in 30 years, and next one needs to be perfect. The HH Alpha Lifaloft and the Patagonia Untracked came close. Large fit well.

The jacket is great; really warm, hood fits nicely after adjusting, craftsmanship is top notch. My one, main, issue is the pockets. The zip is nice and long but you can’t leave them open in the cold as there is no insulation underneath the pocket.

And there are no external pockets. So, if you’re like me, working outside and need regular access to pockets for phone, lenses, camera stuff it is not a very good jacket for working. The pockets are large but not deep enough to keep anything in them.

If you’re looking for something that is useful for lots of items get a more traditional parka with the external top-open pockets and breast pockets. The one thing that would have saved this for me is an easy to get to breast pocket for quick items like keys/phone.

It is a hassle to have to zip/unzip every time I need to access the pockets. All that said, it really is super warm. I’m not sure who’s not dressing well for winter but I have on layers and on a midwest windy, 0 degree Fahrenheit day I’m toasty after walking a few minutes.

The Valiance is a great cold weather down jacket. I mainly use it for general casual wearing, and it makes a decent resort ski jacket, though missing some technical features typical for true ski or snowboard wear.

It has a more snug fit and is more compact than many down jackets. I’m 6’ 215 lbs and the Large fits me well with a base layer or light shirt. It would be tight with a heavier mid layer, but it’s warm enough that I don’t need one typically.

The water resistance is a nice touch, though in rainy temps I normally wear a lighter jacket. Not waterproof, but better than most down jackets. Good price point!.

I’ve owned one of these for over a year now and it is hands down the best winter jacket I’ve ever owned. Just looking at the amount of down you’d think this would be as warm as the Rab Electron jacket – it’s not, it’s much warmer.

Only on the coldest days do I wear a fleece underneath, most days I just wear a t-shirt. Properly waterproof and wind proof, I’ve worn this through some real downpours and stayed dry. The outer shell is much tougher than most down jackets, I’ve never got more than a few months out of one before I’ve damaged the outer, but this one still looks like new 18 months later.

The hood is great and does a good job of keeping the weather off your face. Big pockets. Unlike a lot of down jackets which are very roomy round the stomach but very tight across the chest and shoulders, this one fits more like a regular jacket.

I’m 6’1”, 15 stone and wear a large. The only bad thing I can think of is common to all down jackets. Washing. After all this time of owning the jacket, I’ve only visited the site to see if I can get it cleaned by Rab.

I can’t – because it’s waterproof. Bottom! Got to admit I’m dreading cleaning it, because in my experience they are never the same once you do. If you’re thinking of getting one, do it, can’t think of a better winter jacket – especially for the money.

Just do your best to keep it clean.

I own the discontinued Tasmanian Teal colour of the Down Sweater. It’s warm, light and very comfortable, but extremely prone to holes in the fabric. I’ve not worn the Down Sweater jacket in the outdoors because I prefer the ease of washing the synthetic jackets.

Ive mostly worn it during winter and the colder shoulder seasons to and from work, and at home at my desk to avoid using the heater. My jacket has surprisingly quickly formed a large hole under the wrists, has formed other minor small holes on the arms, and has been leaking feathers at the seam mid way up the right arm.

The only abrasion this jacket has seen is from my desk and wearing a bag, which is disappointing for a fairly expensive down jacket from an outdoors brand. If you are thinking about getting a down-style jacket, consider the Nano Puff synthetic box stitch jackets instead.

My Nano puff which i consistently wear outdoors, and to and from work (before getting the Down Sweater), is faring much better and is a few years older. Albeit subjectively, the Nano Puff feels just as warm likely thanks to the box stitch which better manages the fill from moving around, and is much cheaper.

Sorry Patagonia, in my experience, this is not a great jacket when it comes to longevity.

I’ve had the jacket for about 1 month and I can honestly say this has become my favourite mid-layer/outer-layer jacket for dry weather conditions. At first, I was skeptical of how warm it was going to be since it is relatively thin feeling and less lofty than other down jackets but I have grown to love it even more as a result.

It is surprisingly warm and super comfortable. Works amazing in the winter as a mid-layer under a shell or in the fall/spring on its own. Others have mentioned that the fit is less trim than other down jackets and I have to agree however, I think it’s perfect as it makes the jacket more versatile.

I have an average build, about 80kg, and 6ft tall, and for reference, I purchased a size medium. I would say the fit resembles an hourglass, as it fits narrower at the shoulders and waist yet slightly wider in the torso.

For me this makes it perfect to add a mid-weight base layer underneath without feeling squeezed. My two favourite features are the hood and the collar. The hood has a perfect snug fit without looking like an egg head and keeps you very warm.

Likewise, the fleece around the collar makes the hoody unique from the non-hooded version as is incredibly cozy; I would get the hoody just because of that. One thing I would like to see improved is the length in the back as it’s missing a drop back hem.

Although the jacket repels light rain and a drizzle relevantly well, it isn’t the best in the wet but this is no different from most down jackets thus I wouldn’t call it a weakness. If you’re looking for wet weather warmth, get a synthetic piece instead.

I purchased the “buckwheat gold” colour and could not be happier with the look, it is simply a beautiful and unique colour and hope Patagonia keeps it around in the future. Overall it’s a fantastic, versatile jacket with amazing build quality, typical of a high-quality Patagonia product, and more importantly, it’s made responsibly.

Couldn’t be happier, definitely recommend it if you need a do it all down jacket!.

Love my new Down Sweater Hoody. I’ve been wearing it in 40-50 degree days here in NYC and it’s been warm and fairly wind proof thus far. In researching this jacket I had also been considering the Nano Puff and the Micro Puff jackets by Patagonia, but I went with the Down Sweater Hoody because I thought that it looked the best and would be warmest.

Although I would not wear this jacket in heavy rain, it’s held up well in a light brief drizzle without loosing warmth. The external material seems to be well made with typical Patagonia quality. With that said, I would be carful wearing this jacket while hiking in any kind of heavily brushed area or in a spot that the jacket might be abrased by sharp rocks or branches.

The external pockets are warm and zippered for storage of valuables. There is an inside (left) chest pocket that is also useful. I found that the internal chest pocket is extremely deep, which some may like for storage of hats, scarves or gloves.

Personally I do not like the deep inside pocket as I like to keep keys or a wallet inside my jacket, so those items end up deep down in the pocket. The internal pocket depth was not a deal breaker for me and it still works for storage of keys or a wallet.

The hood on this jacket is the exact same material as the rest of the jacket so it’s very warm and comfortable. I would imagine that this hoody will keep me warm on the coldest windiest days winter throws at NYC.

The jacket fits similarly to other Patagonia items I own, and is true to size. I am 5ft 10in and weigh ~150Lbs and typically wear a medium. A medium size for this jacket fits perfectly. I’d describe the fit as somewhat form fitting and wouldn’t say that it’s unnecessarily baggy at all.

I should be able to layer with a sweater or zip up under this jacket without feeling snug. Overall, I love this jacket and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a warm down jacket.

I’ve been riding (Snowboarding) in Norrona kit for a while now and previously had a Tamok jacket and loved it. Then when I saw the Pro Anorak I just had to buy one. Its unique design is all I’m looking for in a pro quality freeride shell.

The quality, fit and finish is absolutely stunning. Having a “drop over” style shell is a little more faff when putting it on, but so much more versatile for me. It allows me the extra room around my thigh area I want for movement on a board with a low cut shell.

The Pro Anorak is cut looser than the Tamok around the thigh area and the zips either side at the front allow you to adjust the fit and still have use and coverage of a full powder skirt underneath. This allows better mobility when bending down to strap in bindings, adjust boots etc but still keeps your behind covered and warm.

It has enough pockets where I want them with being excessive. The zips are compact, clean, easy to access and use. The powder cuff material is comfortable and much more durable than I’ve had from other brands too, and I love how the cuff is finished with it cut longer on the backs of your hands.

Everything about the Pro Anorak is everything I want for a day riding either piste or backcountry. It keeps me warm enough, completely dry and sweat free. Totally keeps the wind out whist having the ability to carry all the extras I need and room for an avalanche beacon etc.

Not the cheapest jacket out there, but I’ve never had a Norrona product and felt it wasn’t value for money, and this is no exception. A beautifully detailed, designed and finished garment that I know I can rely on to protect me.

Used for resort and backcountry snowboarding. The face fabric is nice and durable while still being lightweight and packable. Coverage is good with a perfect length dropped hem, longer sleeves and a decent sized hood that accommodates a helmet properly.

Shaping at elbows is good and it all moves well. Fit is about right, it’s slim through the torso but still allows for layering. I’m 40 inch chest/34 inch waist and size large allows me to just about fit a high loft down underneath.

Given I usually only wear a light fleece the large works well. But if you’re often layering for very cold conditions or prefer a baggy look then consider sizing up. Pockets are all good and well placed, pit zips and front vent are decent sizes.

All zips are easy to access and use. Position of pit zips is also low enough to unzip a little from bottom and use as hand warmer ‘pockets’ to put your hands inside the jacket. Powder skirt works well and stays in place.

Norrona have pretty much nailed it with this piece.

This was my first Norrona product. I had actually planned to buy the Falkentin shell jacket, but upon visiting the Norrona store in NYC and talking with a very nice employee about fit and function, I ended up getting the Lofoten jacket instead.

I am sure that all of Norrona’s products – incl. the Falkentin – are of the highest quality. I ended up taking the Lofoten jacket over the Falkentin, however, as the Lofoten has a really nice fit with waist definition and room for hips.

I have worn it snowboarding with multiple thick layers under, as well as a rain jacket with almost no layers under – and because of the female-tailored cut, it never feels bulky or big. I also love the color combination.

I know this jacket is primarily for snow sport – and my experience is that it holds up great, I’ve never been cold or felt wind – but because of its nice fit, possibility of having layers as well as no layers, and cool color combinations, I like using it all year around whenever I need extra protection for wind, rain or snow.
