20 Best Hydrofoil For Outboard Motor (2023 Updated)

I own a 21′ Mako with 200 Merc. Boat was a little sluggish getting onto plane due to cavitation. Also, would slowly come off plane even at 20 kts and below no matter how it was trimmed Installed the hydrofoil in about 15 minutes.

Boat now JUMPS out of the water and is on plane in about 5 seconds. No more cavitation! Much slower speeds now needed to stay on plane. The product did not seem flimsy to me as I saw in a review. Don’t worry about drilling holes in cavitation plate.

It’s just aluminum, won’t hurt anything.

Bought the first for my 2stroke Yamaha 8hp, it will now plane my inflatable with my wife and I in it, before the Doelfins it wouldn’t. So bought a second set for my Evinrude 9. 9 2stroke, it planes the wife and I no problem, at a bit less than half throttle maintains the planing.

I’m rather impressed, well worth the money spent, makes the outboards perform like they have 2 or 3 more horse power!.

Well, after 10 years of using my restored 1984 Boston Whaler 13, I now have a new boat. I never give reviews on products I purchase, but I will make an exception for this one. The Doel-fin completely fixed my problem with the boat plowing when I tried to get up on a plane.

I installed a new Mercury 25hp motor ten years ago and these boats come with 40hp motors originally. I thought it was the lack of HP, but it wasn’t. I also use a 11. 0 inch pitch SS prop and the aluminum 9.

5″ pitch prop I also have helped the situation, but never made the boat launch well. When I installed the Doel-fin, I kept the SS 11. 0′ prop on the boat and man what a difference. It wasn’t the 25hp motor or prop at all.

The Doel-fin keeps the nose down and the boat now gets on plane with half throttle easily. I gained 2mph in top speed too. And, when I get the motor trimmed for cruising, I never need to adjust it for take-off, it is self-adjusting.

When the nose tries to go up. the Doel-fin pushes it back down. For light, small boats like mine, I highly recommend this product. For what it does, it is a very cheap fix. I don’t know what took me so long, but I’ll probably end up using my boat much more often.

The hydrofoil seems to work as advertised, I like the performance. But the nuts/bolts supplied with it are garbage! Never saw anything like it. nuts are half the thickness of a normal nut – which looks very cheap.

The biggest issue is I could not get the nuts to go on the bolts (on the boat). So I threaded a nut on on my workbench, and was then going to remove it and mount on the boat. Well I could not remove the nut.

Trying to get it off the bolt snapped in two! Cheap piece of garbage hardware. After I went and bought my own fasteners I was able to get it installed no problem.

I installed these hydrofoils on two 2004 Suzuki DF140 outboards on a 2004 World Cat 250DC (25 ft power catamaran), and they greatly improved the performance in several ways: – Planing sooner, and slower speed possible while remaining on plane (probably by a couple of mph) which will be occasionally useful.

– Much better trim adjustments. I had frequently needed to subtantially adjust one or both outboards to level the ride for sea conditions or weight imbalance from passengers. With the foils, just a touch of trim will now level the vessel.

In fact, just having the foils seems to make the boat travel more level with the outboards trimmed at the same angle so that only an occasional minor adjustment is required. – Cruising speed improved about about 2 mph for the same rpm.

– Planing is now possible on one engine. I had tried planing the boat on one engine soon after purchasing it after one outboard wouldn’t start due to a bad starter. Nothing I tried would get it up on plane with the one engine.

I installed the hydrofoils in 2020 about a year after buying the boat in 2019. After the hydrofoil installation I re-tested this and I was able to get the boat planing on one outboard. This could make a big difference if coming back to shore on one engine from 10 miles out when I can now travel at about 20 mph instead of the non-planing 6 mph at displacement speed.

– Top speed (which I never run at, other than to occasionally test) seemed about the same as before or possibly 0. 5 mph better. Installation is straightforward. Measure and triple-check your measurements.

Drilling through the aluminum is quick and easy–it seemed about as easy as drilling through wood. (I have drilled steel occasionally and that is much harder and time-consuming). These hydrofoils are the most affordable option I can think of to improve boat performance, reduce fuel use, improve handling, increase cruise speed etc.

I had a similar product on another boat and was very impressed with it. I decided to go with this unit for my 20′ Regal and it performed just as I wanted. The boat came on plane much faster and felt more stable overall.

Prop wash was limited a bit also for skiing and other water sports. Installing the product was fairly easy, though I did have to remove the propeller in order to get to the Phillips bolt head on the underside of the plate.

The included template was very nice for being able to mark the spots for drilling. It’s important to get the holes drilled exactly right because there is just exactly enough room on the top for a socket to fit over the nut but into the recessed portion by the holes.

After multiple trips to the lake over 10+ hours the fin is completely stable with no movement or loosening. Overall I’m happy with this product at this price point.

The hydrofoil keeps the boat planed off at every speed. Never have to stand to see over the bow. At high speed tends to dig in the bow so I adjust the outdrive, but rarely need to go that fast. A definite fuel saver.

I know hydrofoils are a little like snake oil, and I am sure this is placebo, but I do think my boat (16′ runabout with Johnson 70hp) is performing moderately (i. e. somewhat noticeably) better with this hydrofoil.

It does seem more stable in my opinion. I am new to boating as well so I may not know what I am talking about, and the few times I had the boat out before getting this hydrofoil were very varied conditions (calm, windy, but same lake), but again, I like to think it is more stable.

Installed on a 17′ SportCraft Center Console with a 70hp Evinrude outboard motor, manual tilt. Absolutely does what it’s suppose to. We’re big people, when the boat took off, it dug in deep and took off slow.

Sometimes I would have to run to the front of the boat to get on plane. After installing the Hydrofoil we took off like a rocket compared to before. Definitely the best single improvement i’ve spent my money on.

Worth every penny! It’ll pay for itself quickly.

BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE. Bought for 2006 Yamaha 50hp outboard. I installed as per directions and upon use of boat outboard started overheating every time at slow trolling speed. Didn’t think it was issue with Hydrofoil so replaced water pump, thermostat, and removed head and water jacket to make sure not obstructed.

Replaced with all new parts and still overheating. Removed Hydrofoil and problem disappeared. I think pucks under foil that allow for no drill install creat a bad turbulence at slow speed at water inlet.

Never overheating at speed or still idle, only slow idle trolling. Stay away from product as seller or Amazon did not honor return. Yes I was over 30 day return for figuring out problem with issue caused by faulty design.

Overall it seems to improve the ride of my 18′ Center Console. I notice less porpoising, and the boat seemed to handle the waves and wakes better. I had hoped it would also get me up on a plane faster, but I didn’t notice any real difference.

I also don’t think my top end speed changed at all. Easy to install, does some of what I hoped it would do. I went for the no drill mount, and seems to have stayed tight after 4 days on the water, I did tighten the bolts after day 1, the didn’t seem to have loosened much.

The price was fair, and it seems to be well built.

I had problem getting my boat into plane. Old small boat 4. 85meters and 50hp outboard. The boat is more narrow than most modern boats in the stern. On a previous old motor I had old school hydrofoils but after it broke I bought a newer outboard that I didnt want to drill holes in to move the old hydrofoils.

After a season without foils, I noticed that the boat didnt go up in plane as Quick as with the old motor, even that the new motor wasnt that worn as the old one and had much more power. Especially with the whole family along.

I had also more problem with the propeller to cavitate, slipping. through the water. I saw the SE sport 400 with the nodrill solution and it also felt as a good quality/ok price solution. After had it for one season Im pleased with the outcome.

The boat quickly goes in plane even with family along, and also stays in plane at lower speed. I have no problem with the cavitation either. No change in top speed, May be some cut in fuel consumption, mostly I think because of the ability to cruise at slightly lower speed in plane.

The kids like to ride tube after the boat and I feel that the boat turns more stable and wont sit in the water as much as before. Easy to mount after looking at the video on youtube. Pretty straight forward.

I own a 92 Northwood 1457 14’6 utility deep-v with a ‘89 Merc 20hp turning a Solas Amita 3 11 pitch prop that would never get on plane even with two people on board to redistribute the weight. It pushed water like a wake boat no matter how much throttle I gave her.

I have looked at these for a couple of years and never pulled the trigger due to mixed reviews. When BPS’ sister company put them on sale I decided to pull the trigger and purchase one. I installed it this past Friday then headed to one of my local lakes to see if there was a change in my boats performance.

I am ecstatic to report that I can finally jump on plane with this! Without this unit I would ride bow high where I had to stand to see where I was going while now I do not. I also no longer make massive wakes for the skiers at speed.

Speaking of speed, I run between 10/11 mph at full throttle. I am not sure if I gained or lost speed (didn’t take before speed measurements) however just being able to get on plane was worth the price of admission.

I might switch back to my 13 pitch and see where I am running (previously 21/22 mph w/two bigs guys on board). I can also cross wakes at speed without the porpoising and near flip overs because of this hydrofoil.

It is almost like having a new boat! Everything from hole shot to planing has improved immensely compared to not having one attached. Installation took me approximately 40 minutes however I took many measurements to make sure this was as centered as possible before drilling.

I can see it being installed in less then 15 mins if you’re not to finicky about being square/centered when installing. Overall I am completely satisfied with this piece. I highly recommend one especially if your boat plows instead of planes.

Got my SE sport early this spring to put on my Lund 16. 25 Rebel XL. It has a 50hp EFI Mercury motor on it and took a while to get on plane. If there were 2 people in the boat, the passenger would have to sit on the live well (in front) to get the nose down.

If there were 3 people in the boat, it was almost impossible to get up on plane. Even by myself, the nose would rise up high enough that I had to stand to be able to see. Waves were always a nightmare, beating both boat and passengers.

First time out I was alone, but could easily tell that the nose didn’t rise nearly as high. Also had some 1 to 1 1/2 foot waves coming back, and the ride was so much smoother. Next time out, was myself and another man (both of us at approx.

170 to 180 pounds. I hit the throttle and was on plane in just a few seconds without the bow coming up high enough to block my view. The third trip with this Hydrofoil made it well worth it. Myself, my son, and grandson (all of us grown men) went out on Sandusky Bay.

My grandson automatically went to sit on the front of the boat. I had him sit behind me and then hit the throttle. The bo raised up to almost eye level, and in a few seconds, we were on plane and running.

My son and grandson were amazed. It was like I’d upgraded the whole motor instead of spending about 30 minutes adding the hydrofoil. Thank you SE Sport for making my boat a dream to run.

Easy to install though the hardware and plastic that is supposed to hold the nuts captive could be better. Make sure to lube the threads so they don’t seize. Once installed the unit works great though.

My boat no longer cavitates and it gets up on plane in probably 1/4 the time or less than without it. The ride is simply amazing now. I am using on a 19ft with a 175.

Bought this today at Academy for my 50 horse Yamaha two stroke outboard. It’s on a 16-foot rescue boat. Before I had to have a lot of weight in the front to actually see where I was going at low cruising speeds before I got up on plane.

After I installed the stingray senior hydrofoil it kept the front down even at moderate cruising speed for good visibility. After it was up on plane very easy and responsive control to keep the front from hopping.

Installation is a breeze for anyone good with their hands and basic power tools. Yes I would recommend this product!.

Put this on my 18′ Patriot w/115 Johnson and it did exactly as advertised, better hole shot, NO porpoising and I’m able to stay on plane at lower RPM. I did lose a little top end speed, but I’ll take it for the lack of porpoising! My boat dealer advised against this, but I think he just wanted to sell me.

With a 170 Mercruiser on a 17′ Invader bowrider, the stern sits low, and bounces around on light chop and crossing wakes. I was skeptical, but thought I would give it try. I was able to bolt it on while standing in shallow water (only dropped one nut in the water, but retrieved it).

My sense is that performance has improved — bouncing was reduced substantially and it seemed to get on plane more quickly. Top speed was probably reduced by a mile or two to 32 (17 pitch prop). Bottom line, it certainly did not hurt and probably helped quite a bit.

As recommended, I did tighten the bolts every few hours of use. Given the ease of installation and the price, it was worth a try.

I purchase this model for my dual outboard 150HP for a Wellcraft 25′ – I noticed an immediate difference in the boats ability to get up on top with little speed or effort. Not that the boat was bad before, but @20 mph it would plane, and hold.

I noticed she was up at just under 10 mph, and cruised with little throttle effort. I am a believer of do it right, or don’t do it. Even though this model allows a “no drill” option, if you don’t check all your fasteners on your boat now you won’t check these either.

I do and I still drilled all four mounting holes. No big deal at all. I removed the small “fins” and installed the SE-400 in 45 minutes per motor. I call that easy and fast.

Most people get a little skeptical when they see something so simple that will fix some boating issues that usually require more expense. However this really works. Put it on a 17. 8 alumacraft with 115 and 9.

9 kicker, dual batteries all on the transom, so very heavy. It allows the boat to get on plane quickly and ride much better. Also, stays in place, very solid. Grreat value.

Bought for a Suzuki DF4A. Turns out the plate is WAY too narrow to fit this stabilizer on. After re-shaping it to get it closer to the drive housing, I realized there would be no way to make room for the anode.

It’s simply mounted in a bad location for the installation of pretty much ANY stabilizer. As for the actual product; it was WAY beefier than I expected. I was thinking thin and useless, but this is a serious chunk of plastic.

Super thick, well made, and likely works very well on motors it will fit on. If you have a small-ish Suzuki 4-stroke (2. 5, 4, or 6), you will need to pass on this particular model though.

Great product for the price. I have a 25hp mercury mariner and it’s not an exact fit. Not the seller’s fault, I mean the product is a one size fits all. I did my best to squeeze the fins in as far as possible before marking the holes and did my best to get at least 1/4″ from edge.

Fins did help keep water from coming back in the boat and little better on plane.

I have run this Hydrofoil on my 60 HP Merc. 4 Stroke since boat was new in 2004. I’m purchasing a New Boat right now, and the new engine will have on it also. Big difference, to me, with the stabilizer installed compared to without.

I’ve taken it off to try out performance, it went right back on. It does provide a better hole shot, levels off the nose of the boat, and makes steering easier. One of the biggest improvements is that it stabilizes the back end of the boat (chine walking?).

Don’t know about increase in speed; but, I didn’t notice it slowing the speed. Its a great product, just have to get past drilling 4 holes into your cavitation plate. After that, you got it made!.

Used on 2005 Avenger 1600, always porpoise with trim full down, rough riding. Hole shot was week, tried many props. Installed sr1, have trim available to use to trim boat now! I was going to sell boat if this didn’t work! Trim works good and boat gets on plane so quick.

This hydrofoil has made all the difference to my boat and outboard set up. It was relatively easy to fit ( on a very soft muddy river bank). It has stopped the problem of spinning prop on the hub when putting on too much power too quickly by lifting the stern and the ventilation of the prop in speed turns.

I could have saved a few quid by fitting one of these instead of buying and trying various propellers.

I have bought fins for outboards before, but not these Lalizas ones. I like the comprehensive kit which includes all fixings and fitting instructions. The design of these fins where the wings are angled upwards appears to generate lift when getting on to the plane and then if engine is set correctly the fins should sit in the turbulent area behind the boats transom once planing thus reducing drag.

Great quality supplied with marine grade stainless nuts bolts and washers! Cant fault them!

I was expecting something more. I unpacked this thing, looked at my new $10k Suzuki 140 hp and thought. Do I really want to drill a bunch of holes in this expensive motor? Answer: No. If I were sure it would matter, I would.

The decision point for me was the fit. Its generic. Made to fit a lot if motors. If it had been more tailored to my motor, I might have gone ahead with the installation. The other thing is. it looks cheesy.

I am not ashamed to admit I have a nice boat. Suddenly this thing made me feel like the guy who puts a spoiler airfoil on his car. It happens to come in handy if the car is ever going 175 mph on a track.

Anything else. its just a silly non functional accessory that adds drag. I decided to give it to a friend who has an older Carolina Skiff with a 70 HP Yamaha. The boat is a little heavy for a 70 hp and if this help him get on plane faster I wont feel like its a total loss.

Took about 30 minutes to install using the template. Measure three times and drill once. If you are off slightly there is a little bit of play so dont be overly worried about it. My boat previously planed out at 15-20 MPH depending on total load as well a distribution and had a steep bow angle out of the hole.

After installing the hydrofoil the angle is significantly less and I am planing around 5mph less, again weight dependent. Steering feels a little more responsive and there is no noticeable difference to top end still 42 MPH+.

Very good cost effective improvement over expensive trim tabs. YMMV but I would recommend trying this before trying anything else. I have a 2004 Glastron 183CC with a 2009 Suzuki DF140.

They look good and feel sturdy but they are a Christmas present for someone with a boat and I dont have a boat

Excellent product, great quality and an extraordinary price.

The included bolts were too short to even reach the nylon lock ring on the nut. The hardware is made of very soft metal causing the nuts to sieze onto the bolts under light torque, and then all four bolts broke when trying to remove the siezed nuts.

I replaced with some proper quality 1/4″ bolts and nuts I had and installed this on a 15hp outboard for my inflatable boat, however this product did not work for me. It caused about a 10% loss in top speed and the boat had a harder time getting on plane than without it.

I think the size caused too much extra drag. Might work well for larger outboards, but plan on buying your own hardware.

This device was easy to install. It functions as expected. It is durable and blends in well with the motor.

Definitely all around a 5 star product. Highly recommended. Good service, good price and good quality. Does what it’s designed to do. Easy to install.

What a boost to performance for a small outboard! I have a 25hp Yamaha on a 15′ fishing boat. It was very slow getting up to a plane, but the Doel Fin helps it to jump out of the water. Without adding trim tabs to a boat, this does a great job.

It planes at lower speeds and gets out of the “hole” fast.

Does the job. Can be a bit difficult to install properly without proper tools due to variations in outboards designs.

Best purchase I made to increase whole shot and quick planing. Would recommend for any inboard/outboard engine. Combined this with lower pitch prop. Results were better than I expected. Company correspondent was very helpful and knowledgeable about products.

This is the first time I am having an aluminum fin. It performs poorly, it barely changes the trim of my boat when I tilt motor. I should have stuck with the one I had on my other boat. And this is not the worst part.

The worst part is that this fin has been in the water (fresh water) for barely a month and already it is severely pitted. I am sure that his is affecting the performance of my boat. I have emailed the sales department requesting to be able to return it.

Bought it to put on my 40hp Mercury Marine 2 stroke made in the year 2000, motor is on my basstracker pro 175, could not mount on bottom of the cavitation plate as advertized because the whaletail did not have a proper cutout for the TrimTab Anode.

There was no info when i bought it stating I would have to remove the anode or I wouldn’t have bought it. I mounted whaletail ontop of cavitaion plate, but I think it sticks out 4 inches more then it was designed too.

It does get the boat on plane faster and once there Iam able to back off the throttle a “little” and stays on plane. If I could go back in time I would buy one from a different maker, I was counting on this to mount to the underside of the cavitaion plate but didn’t work out that way.

Just does not look good ontop,, but it does help getting on plane a little faster.

Got this for my 25hp outboard on a 4 meter tinny. Works great made it a lot more stable and gets up on the plane quicker and easier.

there were quite a few hydrofoils when i looked for one but this one stood head and shoulders above the rest

I have had Dolfins on my other boat for 10 years now and I know they work .

I was having issues with it taking too long and too much power to plane the boat and after planing it took moving all weight excessively forward to stop porpoising. My boat is a 2017 14′ Tracker Grizzly with a 2017 25 hp Mercury 4 stroke.

I installed the hydrofoil and it immediately solved all of my problems. In fact I was able to raise the tilt up on my motor which gave me an additional 1 mph to 28 mph. I was hoping it would allow me to up my pitch from a 10″ to a 12″ and gain additional speed, but no such luck.

The Grizzly is V-bottomed at the back and I noticed the tips of the hydrofoil were excessively deep and exposed to a potential hit (wouldn’t be an issue on a flat bottom). I ended up cutting 2. 5 inches off the tips of each side.

This put the shorter tips in a position where they were protected from an underwater strike. Even with the tips cut off, the hydrofoil maintained all of the wonderful qualities I was looking for. no porpoising and I am now able to set my passenger of the back seat with me.

I believe cutting the tips may have given me an extra. 5 mph as I started hitting 28. 5 mph from time to time. Great product, super strong, all accessories needed are included.

Great addition to outboard. Noticeably different. Very happy. First time boater. Great quality. Buy it if you’re debating it. You’ll be satisfied. Happy fishing ??

I got this product and I was super skeptical about the performance. Well I was wrong! My boat jumped up on plane within 2 to 3 seconds of putting the throttle down. Absolutely amazing. With myself weighing 180 pounds I also had a 250 pound passenger as well as a 55 quart cooler full of ice and this motor handled it with no problem.

Super impressed.

I used the no drill adapter kit and really tightened it down securely. After a couple of higher speed runs the foil shifted? I retightened everything after realignment and I will see how it works out? Reluctant to drill holes in the aluminum fin on my new Tohatsu 25 hp motor and have it break! Also thought it might weaken the area and if it didn’t work I didn’t want holes in a new motor? Anyway.

besides the slipping of the foil , which hopefully will be resolved by torqing the adapter down tighter I’m very pleased! My inflatable boat which rode bow high for 20 yards before settling down on a level plane instantly jumped up and flattened out! Amazing performance! Might be slightly slower top speed but a far drier ride than before do to less water being kicked out from my transom area! Kraig K.

I wanted to take the boat out and see how much improvement this item would give me but, the weather isn’t cooperating today. I will give an update on how well it performs tomorrow if the weather clears up enough to test it out.

As far as the quality of the product it is very sturdy and after installation looks like it came on the outboard. Match your colors and it will look like a stock item. I chose to go ahead and drill the holes for installation because I felt like the clamp on brace may not be as sturdy and the pictures I had seen of it didn’t look as good.

It only took approximately 15 minutes from start to finish to install. Some people have complained that the directions were not detailed enough but it is a really simple installation and I don’t know how much detail they could have given.

The main suggestion I would have is to make sure it is perfectly centered where you want it and do one hole at a time. I centered it and used a battery powered drill to make a small mark then removed the hydrofoil and drilled the first hole.

Then replace the hydrofoil on motor and insert one bolt without the nut in the hole to keep it in place on that corner. I then did the same on the other front hole. My drill was almost too big to drill the back holes from the top but what I did was go to a drill bit about half the size and drill all the way through then removed the hydrofoil and made the hole bigger with the 1/4 inch bit.

All in all I’m really confident on how sturdy it was after all bolts were tightened. The instructions said you could install the bolts either way but I chose to install them from the bottom since it fits almost totally flush that way.

I didn’t like the way it looked with the bottom of the bolts sticking out of the bottom. I guess this pretty much sums it up for now hopefully I will have more to share tomorrow.

I installed this with terror, because I was drilling into the plate of the lower leg of my new outboard motor, but when I went out to test it with the idea that if it made any difference at all I would be OK.

Well the difference was just amazing. It works nothing short of Awesome. The inflatable jumps onto plane now without wallowing around with the bow in the air for a few seconds. I strongly recommend this product.

It appears to be still, well molded and looks good on the motor without being outlandishly large. I bought the SE Sport 200 for my 15 horse 4 stroke Tohatsu.
