So far, this CamelBak Arete 18 has been a nice lightweight pack! The body doesn’t have much structure, especially when the bladder isn’t full. This can be a pro or a con, depending on your preferences and needs.

When I was still in my research phase, I had it narrowed down to either this pack or the Platypus 10L. The ability to detach the main compartment is one of the main reasons I got this pack. I also wanted something suitable in all situations, and this one does it all.

I have several CamelBak hydration packs (I also have a MULE and a ThermoBak, in addition to the Ambush), and each has its place in my hiking plans. The extra pocket on the Ambush makes the pack a good size for a long day-hike.
The pocket isn’t all that big, but it’s big enough to carry my emergency stuff, and some items (like SAM splint) will fit in the bladder compartment. It’s the perfect size if you need something a bit larger than the ThermoBak (which is pretty much hydration only) but smaller than the MULE.
The pack is of excellent construction. The straps are unpadded and easily concealed in the back facing compartment. This is very useful as a body armor pack, or just as a stand alone water bladder. I have enjoyed my new pack and hope to enjoy it for many more years to come!.
