Do no harm is a fantastic insight into the competitive world of brain surgery. Mr Marsh reflects at the end of a career as a brain surgeon on what attracted him to the love of his life, the hurdles he has overcome to achieve his modest achievements (mainly NHS managers and policies) in a field where most of what you can do is remove, ablate, destroy rather than heal.

He is post lobotomy and advances are whittling away at his patient base (for instance radiologists doing most aneurysms nowdays). His fall from Dietyhood is documented as the effect of the erosion of his place in society (the banning of wearing ties in hospitals, the deference he has to pay to anaethetists who have to be out by 5 pm becasue of childcare etc etc).

It is therapy for him to admit to every failure of his making – a bravery I find catharthic and wish I could do the same as a chook vet. He cries out that he is just a human being and challenges our assumption that the best surgeons are autistic and need to be to concentrate on the job in front of them.

I love him as he has made the world a better place for the people who needed him. The problem is that doctors (he hopes this does not include him) have abrogated the management of their factory (the NHS) to managers who are better at responding to public servants trying to manage the NHS and so this is a greek tragedy moving inextrably towards higher levels of mediocrity.

Camelot is over for brain surgery. A great read.

Sometimes with a medical book one finds an all too deliberate attempt at humour or a trivialisation of issues. Not here. This is from the heart, an open and truthful book – filled with triumph and tragedy.

Sometimes an author gives you a flavour of themselves through their writing, this book makes you feel like inviting Mr Marsh to dinner.

Such an interesting book describing some of this brain surgeon’s experiences and some of the patients he has treated. His writing is clear, and lyrical in places as he describes the complex structures of the brain with an infectious sense of wonder.

He writes honestly about himself; his early sense of self importance; his failures (with their devastating consequences), as well as his successes, in spite of the NHS management obstacles to efficient clinical work.

What shines through is his compassion and dedication. A great read.

Do not be put off reading this by thinking it most suited to someone with a medical background. It most certainly is not nor is it a text book. This is Henry Marshes personal biography expressing his personal history and feelings/views throughout his career.

It is a book youll not be able to put down, by a brilliant brain and spine neurosurgeon, and is a deeply personal book, all the better. Do not hesitate to read it and find out what a very remarkable man he is.

His earlier book Do No Harm is somewhat more technical but equally interesting and well worth reading. I cannot recommend the book to highly.

Like most sequels it fails to equal the quality of the first (Do No Harm). The life and (mainly) death issues are compelling in a morbid kind of way so you become drawn into them. His writing style is good but his ego is overpowering at times and I suspect his empathy is also partly reserved for himself.

I would recommend this book to some of my friends, but doubt it would appeal to all.

I have a great deal of respect for Professor Marsh and the work he has carried out ,however this book is a condemnation of the NHS (Not without just cause) and not about his surgical skills. Perhaps I should have read his earlier book first but I am now not willing to do so as it may be written in the same vein as this one.

Pity really as I admire him as a surgeon.

Fantastically easy to read. I was telling friends about it before I even finished the 18 page introduction!. A must read for anyone who wants to know what’s going on inside the noggin. Sanjay Gupta brings the science and yet lets us know that he is a feeling human being with emotions just like the rest of us.

There’s a lot to feel optimistic about in here. It seems nothing is inevitable, and there is hope for all of us when sharpening up our brains.

Everyone over the age of 30 needs to read this book. An ounce of early prevention can keep you out of the asylum when you age and suffer from dementia. Dr. Gupta is an exceptional writer, Well written with personal insights.

All all about how our brains work and what we need to do to keep them working into old age, and what not to do. These two copies I bought for a friend and an ex-wife, so they can avoid dealing with dementia as they age.

My husband is suffering a Neurological problem with no real diagnosis. I found this book very helpful and helped us understand the complexity of the brain. So much so that we believed all our adult children should have one so they can see the importance of taking care of their brain going forward.

So purchased 8 more. A gift that keeps on giving.

Great textbook with a lot of information vital to the development of nursing professionals. I can definitely see how the knowledge contained in this textbook is going to translate into my future practice.

Excellent researchers’ aide and general research reference. Anyone undertaking Evidence-based Practice and research will benefit from reading this book.

I can not to implement more of its content. Very useful especially in my practice field as for Education (under and post graduate).

I like the general message of this book, but this book is very repetitive and the author tries too hard to push the narrative that religion informs science, making it really difficult to be an engaged reader if you don’t agree with that narrative.

I also think the author makes a lot of very vague and bold scientific claims but makes minimal effort to provide adequate support for those claims. I’m not sure I’d recommend this book.

This book is a true revelation of the uniqueness and complexity of each individual created by God. The parallel between scientific research of the mind/brain and God’s holy word are amazing and the depth of truth in the connecting the two are explained so beautifully by this author.

In the world we live in with mental illness on the rise, this book is a must to understand how we got where we are, why we experience what we do and how to live in the love zone that will free us to be who we were meant to be.

This book will make a big difference to how you see thingsa snd how you think. It will help you to have a clearer view on daily issues and clear the clutter out of your mind. I had to buy this again, I was so impressed with it I lent my first book out to my friend was so impressed with it I never got it back! It really is a necessary book to help you move on and think more positively.

While some of the brains were well preserved, unfortunately most were missing the whole optic chiasm as well as olfactory bulbs. I had to show the kids “where it SHOULD be. ” More importantly, two of the brains were missing the entire brain stem.

No cerebellum, no “arbor vitae,” no medulla. Missing these major structures kind of defeats the purpose of dissection. Regarding preservation, most specimens were well preserved, but one was lined with black material and was friable ; no kid wanted that one!.

I have been ordering sheep brains from Carolina for many years. I use them for a dissection demonstration in my university course on motor neuroscience. As usual, the process of ordering the sheep brain was easy and straight-forward.

Also as usual, the brain arrived quickly and without any issues.

I have used the sheep brains the past few years in my Anatomy and Physiology class during our Nervous System Unit. The students definitely get excited and are very engaged with this dissection. Great quality and there is a little smell of preservative with these, it is there, but pretty insignificant.

Absolutely brilliant book for anybody looking for answers to the brain problems which may not be addressed by UK health care, or not until it’s too late, and possibly irreversible. A must-read for anybody interested in or worried about deteriorating brain health and performance.

Really accessible, easily understandable but not patronising. It contains so much information you’re unlikely to get elsewhere, and definitely not from a GP or even mainstream neurologist in my experience.

The book was recommended to me by the charity Headway. If you suspect brain issues, this charity and this book between them provide so much information and support. Read it!.

This is the most awe inspiring book I’ve read, I have had an interest in reading about health and healthy functions of the human body and how to help people. But this is unbelievable information that I wish I knew when my mom was alive with her dementia.

Great book, I’ve learned so much about how bad eating wheat is for the gut and brain. This book is loaded with solutions. I sense I just took a neurology course that others would go to school for and spend way too much to learn.

Resolve all your gut and brain, blood sugar, and hormone imbalance more by learning how the body works. This Dr. is ahead of his time for sure.

Neuroplasticity is one of the leading edges of understanding how the body heals. Using movement sound light environmental changes to create new ‘neuro-pathways’ (developing new ways for the brain to function) that are healing sounds like science fiction and ‘too good to be true ‘ but the research is solid and the outcomes are amazing.

I bought this book hoping it would have more information pertaining to how to apply these methods to the ‘common’ mental ailments (depression and anxiety) and that information is to be found by reading the titles noted in the extensive bibliography.

There was anecdotal information of how these methods address these along with many others issues but the majority of this work is given as the title indicates stories of how neuroplasticity is changing how we are thinking about healing.

Dr. Doidge a psychiatrist and psychotherapist has traveled extensively in researching how the new discoveries in neuroplasticity are helping people once feared irrevocably impaired due to injury disease birth defect etc.

Many of the stories he cites are extensive to the point of my feeling he was over-stating his case. Each of the eight chapters focuses on a different method found to be effective in creating new neuropathways.

Chapter One addresses the ability and power of unlearning (not re-educating) what one does and how one perceives certain aspects of disease and illness specifically those traits dealing with chronic pain.

Chapter Two highlights the benefits of exercise as it strengthens more muscles than those found below the neck. Chapter Three gives background and some research as to the ‘how’ and ‘why’ Neuroplastic treatment works.

Chapter Four the chapter I found to be most fascinating deals with how light heals. The content regarding ‘cold’ lasers was enough to give me goosebumps. Chapter Five is a biography of Moshe Feldendrais a physicist turned Kineticist whose understanding of how the brain is connected to movement has literally brought people out of wheelchairs and off of crutches without invasive interventions.

Chapter Six expands Feldenkrais’ developments and pairs it with Mindfulness and other ‘awareness’ training of the brain. Chapter Seven explores how the brain ‘resets’ itself with stories of those who have succeeded in reversing symptoms of progressive disease or catastrophic injury of the brain.

The final chapter Eight delves into the power of sound in healing the brain. As a therapist the stories related in this book are encouraging and exciting. To read of resolution to dysfunctions and injuries once thought to be so severe that the best that one could hope for is acceptance and learning coping skills to address the deficiencies caused by those instances is cause for further research and a glimpse of hope.

I kept reminding myself when the stories were sounding too good to be real particularly learning they had been wrought using only light sound movement etc. that the idea that bread mold could heal infection once sounded just as incredible.

As a theologian reading a book written by a scientist citing solid science to discuss how the body can do more than we have come to think possible puts me in mind of the Psalmist when he wrote ‘Such knowledge is too wonderful for me.

I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps 139). ‘ Perhaps our remembering that all we ‘know’ is all there is will keep us all searching for further true things.

Packed with insight into some of the innerworkings of how our complex human body was engineered. For someone who is determined to get to the root cause of a certain illness rather than hide it, or ignore it, by just addressing symptoms, this may be just what you are looking for.

It provides examples of courageous, sincere scientists physicians that truly care about their patients and do not accept traditional ineffective “health care treatments”.

I found this book to be the perfect sequel to The Brain That changes Itself. There are various helpful chapters on ways to help not only the brain injured but a whole variety of conditions from psoriasis to autism and much more.

I just wish our medical profession had caught up with information that has been out there for decades. This book brings practical possibilities and hope.

A really, really intriguing book about a mysterious disease that plagued the author and the journey her family took to get a diagnosis and ultimately treatment. Cahalan was a porter at the New York Post when her strange illness hit her, which makes the writing in this story great.

It highlighted to me how important it was for her to have a family that did not give up on her and continually fought on her behalf for the best doctors, combined with being in the right place and the right time (in New York City with super close proximity to a top-notch doctor who happened to do research on the particular, rare disease that she had and had come up with a treatment not long before she was struck by it).

It makes me realize that those without resources of family, money, and luck would not have an outcome like hers. A fantastic recollection – thank you for sharing your story!.

What an amazing book. I am usually one for psychological thrillers, but this true story, written by the journalist that this happened to, is a must read. She was diagnosed with an extremely rare brain disorder that presented itself as something else entirely and it took them a month to figure it out and she kept going downhill fast.

I started with an illness , first Dystonia , I thought was down to medication I was on for psychosis and depression, then I became I started with lots of food intolerances and also to medication, I keep falling in to coma type sleep, cant move but could hear , my legs kept loosing power and my arms to a point I would spend weeks in bed.

Iv had lots of blood test brain scans due to constant migraines. And still my doctors have not found the real cause. I started doing my own research. I found this book. Now to approach my doctors, Im sure I have the same thing.

A skeptic would find this book unbelievable. All I can say is that I have used some of the healing techniques described in the book (tennis elbow and frozen shoulders) and unbelievably into the last third week of doing what was recommended I was pain free and able to use all those joints freely.

This was after going to my GP who could only offer cortizone injections and surgery. That was fifteen years ago, and haven’t had a twinge since. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

David Hamilton is a genius – this means he can explain complex medical information in a way that it can be easily understood. He is also a pioneer in evidence based mind body medicine, very funny, and eye candy to boot.

I think he is the person who may save the world with his message of human kindness.

I enjoyed parts of this book but it didnt grab me. Im sure some Drs may describe her as airy fairy and a rogue Dr. Too many people these days get on the tin foil hat system of proven medicine that has real validity behind it.

With a medical issue myself I know a positive mind set helps. Who will know if my brain can trick my body into working again. Perhaps if I believed hard enough. However danger in some hands. Until then I will remain positive and I believe 48% of deaths are stress related although hard to prove.

This book is the best book on the market. Everyone should read this book. To biologically understand the mind, then to spiritually apply that understanding is it powerful. recovery has been a nightmare for me, this book has changed everything.

Everything written by Rick Hanson is infused with intelligence, wisdom, compassion and cutting-edge research. In researching the nervous system, I benefitted enormously from the book Buddha’s Brain.

For those who interest themselves in positive psychology, I would recommend this book to see how neuroscience can be used to talk about positive aspects of behavior and mental processes.
