Hooks for trout fishing come in many different sizes and shapes, but they all have one common goal: to catch trout. There are dozens of different trout hooks on the market, each designed for a specific type of fishing.
Whether you’re fishing for trout in a river or stream, or in a lake or pond, there’s a hook out there that’s just right for the job.
The most common type of trout hook is the standard bait hook. These hooks are designed to be used with live bait, such as worms, minnows, or crayfish. Bait hooks are available in a wide range of sizes, from tiny hooks that are perfect for catching trout fry, to large hooks that can accommodate baitfish up to a foot long.
Another popular type of trout hook is the fly hook. Fly hooks are much smaller than bait hooks, and are designed to be used with artificial flies. Fly fishing for trout is a popular sport, and there are hundreds of different flies available to imitate the trout’s natural diet.
No matter what type of trout fishing you’re planning on doing, there’s a hook out there that’s just right for the job. With so many different hooks available, it’s important to choose the right one for the type of trout fishing you’re planning on doing.
Berkley Fusion19 hooks are targeted to everyone, from the novice to the avid angler. The Colored Octopus is a popular style of walleye, trout, and salmon hook for rigs and single hook applications. The Colored Octopus is curved with a slightly offset point for quick hookups.
The needle point is nickel-plated with the rest of the hook finished in attractive, extremely durable, fish-catching colors. The package features an innovative resealable clamshell design for tackle management and comes with bait recommendations.
Purchased these about a month an a half ago while loading up on some Gulp products. I use the #1 and 1/0 rigging slow death for walleye and saugeye. Where I fish there are large catfish and hybrid striped bass that can tear up a rigging hook.
These work great because they are durable and very sharp and can stand up to non target species. I’ve had issues with getting Gulp minnows to spin with Mustad hooks. These have a more exaggerated bend allowing them to spin wider soft baits with ease.
A plus is the bait keeper barb. I don’t use it as a bait keeper, but as a bait stopper. Most fish cause the bait to slide up the hook and over the eye. This helps stop the bait from doing that.
I’ve used a lot of different swim bait hooks from expensive to cheap; these are my favorites. Good stout hook, good keeper, reasonably priced. I’ve got them in 3/0, 4/0, and 5/0 for Fat Swing Impact type swim baits from 3.
25 to 4. 8. Would recommend to anyone for those types/sizes of swim baits.
I just started using these hooks this year. They are sticky sharp and hold on to fish better than the hooks that I’ve used in the past. I have bought an assortment of every size and i’m using these hooks exclusively now.
These Mustad treble hooks are perfect for trout fishing or anything else that requires the smallest treble hooks out there. FeaturesSuper small trable hook24-count gold finishStandard Hook. DescriptionThese Mustad treble hooks are perfect for trout fishing or anything else that requires the smallest treble hooks out there.
I use these hooks for stinger hooks when jig fishing for walleye. Super sharp and the hook barb keeps the stinger in the minnow or the plastic. I use to use #8 but switched to #6 because it seems to keep the fish better.
The stinger catches about 90% of my fish in cold water through winter and early spring. I have tried various kinds and brands, these do it for me.
Mustad hooks are pretty much the standard for salt water fishing, good quality, sharp and they make all different types. There are a few other quality salt water hooks out there and I buy them also, There a bunch of cheap copy’s out there and not worth the soft steel they ae made out of.
Buy good hooks it’s not worth losing a big fish because the hook failed, on the flip side no matter who makes the hooks buy ones designed and strong enough for the game fish you are after.
these hooks are sharp, but in NO WAY as “sticky” sharp as Gamakatsu trebles which I’ve used for years with zero problems and no need to manually sharpen before use. Tried the Mustad UltraPoint KVD trebles based on advertising, etc.
, but are way over priced based on quality/sharpness. The Mustads are sharp, but STILL need manual touch-ups (which should NOT be necessary considering the advertising and price). I have NEVER had to sharpen a Gamakatsu treble hook, and you have to be super careful with them because they are so sticky sharp right out of the box.
I will never buy Mustad treble hooks again because of their expensive price and the need to do “maintenance” sharpening before using these “so-called” premium hooks. The Mustads are no sharper than Eagle Claw Laser sharp hooks which sell for a fraction of the price of Mustads.
Go with Gamakatsu if you want the best and sharpest treble hooks right out of the box based on my 45 plus years of fishing.
Features: Z-Man Trout Eye Jigheads are 3/16 ounce jigheads with 2/0 Mustad UltraPoint hooks. Vivid, 3D eyes for maximum attraction. Hand-poured with pride in the USA. Super-sharp conical keeper barbs to hold ElaZtech plastics securely.
Available in 5 colors, 3 jigheads per pack. Z-Man Trout Eye jigheads are 3/16 ounce jigheads with 2/0 Mustad UltraPoint hooks that are designed to tap into inshore predators hunting instincts by mimicking a fish eye.
Developed by South Carolina seatrout fishing guru Ralph Phillips, the Trout Eye Jighead is the ideal jighead for inshore saltwater fishing. Scientific research has shown that gamefish key in on the eye of a baitfish and that a visible eye is a critical determining factor in their decision whether or not to strike.
Offshore anglers have recognized this fact for years and have consequently incorporated large eyes on many trolling lures designed for pelagic species. Built with the largest eye possible for this jig size, the Trout Eye Jighead allows inshore anglers to capitalize on gamefish’s instinctive feeding habits.
Perfectly balanced for use with a variety of soft plastic bait styles, Trout Eye Jigheads feature dual, super-sharp keeper spikes that hold even 10X Tough ElaZtech plastics securely. Available in 5 colors, 3 jigheads per pack.
Warning: The bait keeper is sharp and will chew up softer baits. If you don’t hook it right the first time, you’ll need to bite your bait or grab another one. It will hold on tight, but if a fish knocks your bait down the hook, the same thing applies.
However, if you’re using ElaZtech baits, you’ll be glad you have them. Superglue will work, but I like to use another hook and pull a loop of the ElaZtech material over the hook eye to keep it in place.
(YouTube search “7 ElaZtech Hacks” and you’ll find a tutorial by ZMan. ) With all that said, I really like the Trout Eye 3/16 ounce jighead. It is very balanced allowing for different retrieving techniques.
I like to use an improved clinch knot as well as a nonslip loop knot with this jighead. I like to use it with 3-4″ DieZel Minnows, Rage Swimmers, and even Keitech Easy Shiners (These are soft and don’t hold up as well, but I love their action!).
The hook shank is right at 1″ so if you are using a larger/longer bait, I’d go with the Redfish Eye jigheads. Their hook keepers aren’t as sharp but still get the job done.
Awsome jighead for fresh and saltwater! I have paired the 1/10 oz. Jigheads with the zman 3 inch shadz in the dark stormy color. When I rigged it, the barb lined up between the top fin slot so snugly that I thought- its weedless as all getout, but no way can I get a good hook set.
Well 3 hits and 3 bass later, I was a believer! The zman shadz are buoyant enough that they have a slower fall when you stop the retrieve.
people love Jointed plugs because they have more movements. Fly anglers love to tie articulated streamers for more movements. But Why did it take so long for swim jigs to be articulated? Beats me, but if you thought the jointed football head jigs are the bomb for bass fishing, check these out! strongly connected jigs that swings with your lure! attach a swimbait paddle tail plastic lure and this will roll so much better than a normal jig head! Them eyes on the head stays on as well! give them a shot! Especially with Zman Plastics!.
Number one in fishing sports Manufactured in the country of China Made of the highest quality material A Sickle Baitholder Offset Down Eye with slices on the shank to wiggling live bait or plastics. Smaller sizes are great for Walleye and Trout.
Not only are they extremely sharp, but these Matzuo Aberdeen Sickle hooks will stay sharp after catching several fish. And because of the sickle bend, they are very strong too for a thin wire hook; won’t straighten out as easily as other hooks do.
I am primarily a live bait (minnow) fisherman. Because of the light weight of these hooks, my bait minnows don’t get exhausted nearly as fast as they normally do when they have a thicker, or heavier wire hook sticking through the snout.
A free swimming or wiggling minnow normally catches more fish than a lifeless looking, motionless minnow will. I’m sure these particular hooks will also work just as well with leaf worms that are impaled in the middle of the worm just past the barb of the hook.
That’s all I ever do with leaf worms, just prick the barb into them. Because that way the worms can wiggle freely and you will find that they very rarely pull themselves off the barb of a hook. That ability of a worm to wiggle freely on a hook is a natural and very enticing sight to any fish.
That’s why I never “thread” a worm on a hook, it takes all the motion out of the bait. Sure, lifeless looking baits will sometimes catch fish, but the more natural the bait looks in the water, the more fish, especially the bigger ones, you will attract.
I love these hooks, best I’ve ever seen for live bait fishing.
Unusual linear hook design helps to keep the bait in place while casting. It worked well for catching small fish. In this case, we were fishing for Croakers for bait to catch redfish. I think ending the point inward a bit, like a circle hook, would improve fish hookup.
Berkley Fusion Treble Hook 1X 4 is targeted to everyone, from the novice to the avid angler. The Treble Hook is an instrumental hook design used in a wide variety of angling methods. Each front of every package provides bait recommendations.
Love these hooks. I bought the orange. They’re super bright, and sticky sharp. Although they’re not marketed as UV, the orange do glow under a black light. The only downside maybe paint durability. Had some minor chipping while swapping out my crankbait trebles.
I use them as a replacement treble hook for several different baits, they are almost an exact match to the hooks that come on the baits originally. The wire is a little thicker, I wish they made one that was 1 wire thickness down.
But by far the sharpest and strong treble hooks I’ve ever used. Very good quality. I fish bass tournaments and they are the only treble I can pull out of the box and put on a bait and don’t have to inspect them to make sure the points are sharp and not bent.
Bought these hooks a few weeks ago and replaced some hooks on my topwater baits. What I like most about them besides how sharp they are is they aren’t as heavy as some other brands, making them perfect replacements for topwater baits and crankbaits.
But don’t think they aren’t sturdy, I caught several smallmouth this weekend, one over 5 lbs and they are holding up great. I highly recommend this hook to anyone, if you have a brand favorite, this will take it’s place.
Fluorescent-colored, octopus-style hooks from Gamakatsu are perfect for steelhead, trout, and walleye rigs. The variety of colors lets you experiment with different combinations until you find the right one to reel in your catch.
Hooks feature a durable, marine-grade construction for corrosion resistance.
These are about the best hook on the market. They catch fish. I have used these on 2 steelhead trips on the Salmon River in Idaho this past month and landed 13 steelhead personally. Our party of 3 people has landed 37 fish total during these two trips all using the gamakatsu octopus hooks.
They are a great product. Only color missing from this assortment pack is the plain steel hook. That addition would make this packet complete. Thanks.
I always use the #6 green hooks when crappie fishing. Also the bronze. For walleye, crappie fishing, these little minow hooks are the best. The attractor colors really work. It is noticeable. I prefer bronze over blue, black, nickel, silver hooks.
I have high confidence in the plain bronze and attractor colors !! Good hooks.
They are ideal for fish that are short striking lures. These hooks work great on spinner baits, buzz baits, and trolling rigs to increase your hook ups.
The Gamakatsu saltwater hooks are, in my opinion, the best on the market for bottom fishing. They have super sharp points, and stay that way through many days of fishing on the hard bottom. They will Pierce them hard and honey mouths of large snapper and grouper resulting in my hook-ups and landings.
Also, I have never had a 4X hook break under the strain of huge sharks and the occasional Goliath. THUMBS UP!.
This product is great for big catfish and big bass. I use size 6/0, 7/0 and 8/0 hooks when I bottom fish for catfish and smallmouth bass, the hooks don’t rust and they are incredibly strong. They are very sharpe and really pin the fish in the lip.
Every now and then the smallmouth will get one down in their gut but I can usually get the hook out. The product itself is great and I do recommend these hooks, however upon receiving these in the mail the box in which they were shipped in was mostly destroyed and was being held together by tape and the hooks were all over inside the box and some were missing.
I recommend buying this product in store if possible to ensure you receive all of your hooks.
Had a pack of the equivalent of these in Eagle Claw Brand, tested them out so I could save these hooks for walleye on fishing opener. Had to immediately switch back to these right away. I never poked my fingers while tying on the Eagle claws but while tying these you have to be much more carful, poked myself a lot.
That’s a good thing! These are thinner and much sharper, definitely a much higher quality hook. Also they don’t rust like the eagle claws. Worth the extra couple dollars.
On a slow fishing day in the 1920’s, Drew McGill encountered a bird of prey that caused him to rethink the shape of the common fishhook. Now over 90 years later, Eagle Claw continues to carry on a legacy of integrity, honesty, and American heritage.
As the last hook in the world to be manufactured in the United States, Eagle Claw offers an extremely price competitive product without compromising quality or attention to detail. From its humble beginnings, Eagle Claw has grown into one of the most widely recognized brands in the fishing industry.
Today Eagle Claw provides anglers with numerous choices of hooks and terminal tackle for an array of species, spanning both fresh and saltwater fishing.
If there was such thing as a perfect fishing hook. It would have to be the light wire Aberdeen hooks in the bronze color. I have caught more fish species on these hooks then any other fish hook. It’s hard to beat 100 hooks for only 5 bucks.
Plus since they are light wire. When you get a snag. Many times you will get your hook back. Just bend it back and you are good to go. They are just the right sharpness too for what you get. I have land 10lb carp on them.
So plenty strong. Size 10 is not too small for multi species fishing. Totally worth it.
I bought a couple packs in 1/0 and 2/0 sizes, I have found that they work great to hold bait on especially well. While other hooks allow bait like squid and shrimp to easily slip off and the fish end up with a meal and you don’t these don’t.
They hold onto the bait and the shape helps to hook on with ease. Locally, they are normally sold out or hard to find but Discount Tackle always seems to have what I need. I keep my tackle box loaded for my next adventure.

Put many steelhead on the bank with these hooks and even recently a decent sized catfish. They are sticky sharp and I’ve never had one bend. Looking forward to using them against king salmon this fall
I was down to my last BR Skeena Hook and I stopped at a bait shop to get more. I picked up some other well known brands and spent more money on them than the BR Skeena hooks and felt like I was missing fish.
I had some issues sticking fish with another style of hook and tried out the Skeena’s. For whatever reason they made a huge difference on sticking these fish for a few weeks when my standard hooks weren’t getting it done.
Gamakatsu Octopus Hooks are an all purpose hook perfect for bait presentations. Sizes 4 6 and 8 are great for use with spawn sacs for steelhead and trout and for spinners rigs for walleye. Sizes 8 and 10 are a good hook to use with minnows and worms while the size 12 and 14 hooks are good for use with single salmon eggs.
Gamakatsu fishing hooks are known for performance durability and reliability. Available in sizes 4 through 14 with a black chrome finish. 10 Hooks per package.
This medium support bra is great for all sorts of training and offers an added bonus of cute straps that add a pop of colour (I purchased the red colour) beneath pretty much any style of workout shirt.
I am always looking for a lined bra with removable pads that reduce bouncing and keep things in place comfortably and this bra does the trick. I also appreciate the neckline of this bra. I can lean over without having to worry about showing too much skin.
Smooth and seamless material. There is the slightest gaping just under the arm pits but nothing outrageous. I have washed it once and it seemed to hold up fine. Definitely a bra that will see a lot of activity!.
This Eagle Claw Treble 18” Snell Hook makes a highly functional addition to your tackle box. The quality construction and design is a popular choice, particularly for trout fishing. The Eagle Claw snelled hook is well-suited for soft, moldable baits and holds them securely in place both in and out of the water.
It is non-offset and compact, so it fits neatly with your other equipment. It has been carefully tested for quality, durability and strength to provide you with superior performance.
These hooks broke off with the first fish. We could bend them with our hands. It could be a bad batch because we have used this brand forever and they are usually good. We had the throw these away.
I usually purchase Eagle Claw Brand items due to their reliability, strength and endurance. When you out their in the moment failure of a hook or other product means everything. I don’t take that chance because I use Eagle Claw Products, not the cheap foreign made reproductions.
Over the years Eagle Claw products have proven to be the best and most superior products available. I have never had any of my Eagle Claw hooks, lures, fishing poles or any of their products fail me in over 50 years of using them!.
I ordered 2 of the #6 50 count packs and in both packs, a few of the treble hooks were broken or had dull points. While not a major deal breaker, it does mean that I ended up paying more money per usable hook.
You would think the company would be able to have better quality control than that especially since it happened with 2 separate packs.
The methods used in creating Gamakatsu hooks is what makes it so superior to all other brands. First, only the most premium grade of high carbon steel is used. This insures against any blemishes in the metal which can weaken the hook.
Secondly, Gamakatsu has the most advanced tempering system in the world. Every hook is heated to the exact temperature that is perfect for that particular style and size then cooled in oil. This process produces hooks which are super strong, but not brittle.
It is extremely difficult to achieve a balance between strength and flexibility, and it took many years for Gamakatsu to perfect this process. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, our sharpening process is the most modern in the world, and results in a perfectly conical point that is unequaled in sharpness.
These are the best hooks on the market for Gulp applications for Fluke!!! I have 5/0 hooks and also just bought the 6/0 version!! I believe and 4/0 would be useful. As well and 7/0 with an increase in shaft length would be perfect for threading on whole live or dead Squid for Doormats.
Although it did catch me a fish, I Was alittle disappointed when I got a 30”striped bass. Hook was through the top of the lip. Needed to use my pliers to remove the hook. Hook snapped in half while using my pliers with barely any pressure.
I kind of thought they would be a bit stronger for the $ that you pay for these. I will not buy these again.
This is another fishing hook that was developed for fishing with bait, but is now also being used for artificial bait. Known as an egg hook, this style is generally used by trout fishers using natural salmon eggs as bait.
Today’s fly tiers create artificial egg patterns to simulate salmon eggs and many prefer this hook style because the up-eye does not close off the hook gape and the angle of pull enhance hook-ups. Daiichi Fly hooks are the finest in the world.
Here’s why: They are made of the finest high carbon steel, which is hardened and tempered to an exacting formula that makes for a long point life and a very strong hook. Daiichi hooks use a 12-degree constant taper ground needle point.
This eliminates irregularities in shape, assuring no weak spots, & gives amazing speed of penetration. Daiichi hooks are also chemically sharpened in a special bath that deburs their points. Daiichi hooks come in multiple finishes that are all evenly and smoothly applied.
Each hook is precision tooled “true” to the exact design of the eye, bend, gape & barb. The barbs are an advanced “low profile” design that results in minimal weakness and less broken hooks and lost fish.
Take me pitchin’ ! Sharp point that hangs in ‘yer fingernail ! Compact hook with a wide gap ! Lo-Vis dull black color. Barbed shank so ur plastic stays put! This hook will Stick’em !
We fish in a small private pond, & there’s a lot of small Bass — they never get over 1 – 1 1/2 pounds. We use a lot of plastic worms, & sometimes they get swallowed deep. To avoid killing the fish, I CUT the barb off the hook with German-made dykes, & back the hook out.
These “thin wire” hooks are easier to cut, but they are strong enough to handle the small bass in this pond. These hooks are really sharp, & have the perfect size & shape for use with plastic worms.
I purchased this to replace my Trophy Ridge 4-pin plastic sight that was included with a bow I bought. I was thoroughly impressed with the adjustment of this sight. No tools required and its almost similar to sighting in a rifle scope.
You just unscrew the thumb bolts and you have a separate thumb bolt for each elevation and windage that moves the site in measurable increments. The material coating the site is smooth and works well to dampen some of the noise.
The rheostat light is nice as well with a 3 setting push button design. The fibre optics on this sight also seem brighter than the previous sight I was using and they are interchangeable to give you a custom pin layout.
The only thing I did not like about this sight was the “extra fibre included” statement that the manufacturer mentions, it came with 1 extra green fibre and the 3 pack of fibre for this sight is a little expensive.
These bad boys are sharp! Perfect hooks for senko worms, zoom salamanders, and toads on the river. They are the perfect hook for smallmouth bass when fishing on the river. It’s sharpness combined with the river’s water pressure allows you to make a good hook on a fish without using a lot of force.
All you will have to do is fight the fish like normal. I recommend these to all my fishing buddies. The last thing you want to do is lose a big fish on a dull hook. These hooks are great!.
Gamakatsu is the leading fish hook manufacturer in Japan and for that matter worldwide. Gamakatsu is constantly testing new materials and striving to improve their products which already set the standard for the rest of the industry.
In 1992 Gamakatsu USA Inc. was established to provide Gamakatsu brand hooks to the U. S. market followed by SPRO The Official Gamakatsu’s exclusive agent established in the Netherlands in 1994 to service the European market.
Received order very quickly in good order without damage. Product is the best I have used compared to other similar hooks…much stiffer. I will purchase more from FISHING ONLINE. JAMES C.
Sharp cutting point to help you hook up your trout or other dough-bait target securely. O’Shaughnessy bend to the treble hook for added strength. Excellent hook to use with Berkley Powerbait for targeting planter Rainbow Trout.
Available in 4 different sizes from size 12 to size 6. This VMC traditional O’Shaughnessy treble is forged from the finest high-carbon steel. Available in 4 sizes from size 12 to size 6, this hook is your best option for paste/dough bait trout fishing.
These are OEM hooks used by Rapala on their 03 size lures. At 1X strength, the hooks bend or break quite easily. As a short shank hook, this is the only hook I have found where the 2 hooks on Rapala 03 lures don’t tangle.
I feel that these hooks are a good value. I have used these and the black finish 9650 hooks. They are well made, strong, sharp and the finish is durable. I can’t say how corrosion resistant they are in saltwater as I have only used them in fresh water but the finish holds up well in fresh water.
I use these to replace the trebles on some crankbaits and considering their inexpensive price, they seem like a good value to me.
Poor quality Mulies (2kg frozen solid as 1 piece). When thored out enough to to break into individuals they were extremely soft and would not stay on the ganged hooks. The previous week we purchased a 1 kg pack of mulies and they were frozen as individual mulies — absolutely brilliant.

In conclusion, hooks for trout fishing can be either barbed or barbless. While barbed hooks can be easier to set and provide a better hold, they can also be more difficult to remove and can cause more damage to the fish.
Barbless hooks are less likely to cause damage to the fish, but can be more difficult to set and remove.
